ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT
---------------------
freed.in - New Delhi 2007 - September 28-29
freed.in isn't just a Linux conference. It is a technical conference
about Free Software and related topics, held annually in New Delhi. We
invite submissions on any Free Software related subject; from Linux
and the BSDs to OpenOffice.org, from networking to audio-visual magic,
from deep hacks to Creative Commons. Important dates
* Submissions open: July 15, 2007
* Submission deadline: August 16, 2007
* Email notifications from review committee: August 20, 2007
* Conference begins: September 28, 2007
Presentations being accepted
We are accepting proposals for two different types of presentation:
you can submit a proposal for a talk or a tutorial. If in doubt, you
want to submit a talk proposal rather than a tutorial proposal.
Call for Papers
Talks are the main part of the conference: a series of presentations
on Free Software related subjects. This year there will be 20-30
presentations. Presenters will be given a 50 minute slot, which
includes up to 10 minutes for questions.
The main programme also has 8 tutorial slots. Tutorials are longer and
more interactive presentations, with slots lasting for 160 minutes,
giving the speaker time to interact with the audience. Proposals for
tutorials should be clear about the level of expertise required of the
audience.
Most presentations and tutorials will be technical in nature, but
proposals for presentations on other aspects of Free Software and Free
Culture, such as educational and cultural aspects are welcome.
Topics
Submissions related to the following topics are welcome:
* General Papers (very strict accept policy!)
* System Administration
* Collaboration and Communication
* Scientific and Research Tools
* Native Language Computing
* Legal Aspects of FLOSS

Well,I tried to give the paramount things,namely what I did before the stuff
happened,what happened,what I tried and what is the present situation.I'm
sorry if it became unreadable.

If you read my original post,you would find that I've already reinstalled
Grub from Ubuntu Live CD.The problem is that Grub tells me it cannot mount
the partition it itself is on!
@JTD
> Have you tried the console method i posted? what was the result.
I tried and the result was posted to the list.I tried some variations
too.For your benefit:
"Boot unsuccessful.
/dev/hda7(/ for Ubuntu) had vmlinuz as symlink to boot/vmlinuz-
2.6.20-16-generic and a vmlinuz.old as symlink to boot/vmlinuz-
2.6.20-15-generic,both owned by root and 777 permissions.
Similarly,initrd.img was symlink to boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic and
initrd.img.old was symlink to boot/initrd.img- 2.6.20-15-generic,again owned
by root and 777 permissions.
I tried root=/dev/hda7 and root=/dev/hda5 with root (hd0,4).I also deleted
the above symlinks in chroot mode because my /boot partition is not
automount in my Ubuntu fstab and there's no use of symlinks which point to a
file on a partition which is not mounted.Hopefully,that's not wrong. :P"

Big 'No' To SCO
Daniel Lyons, 08.12.07, 10:44 PM ET
At long last, the SCO Group's ugly, often farcical legal crusade against
Linux appears to be over.
SCO has spent four and a half years arguing that it owns the copyrights
to Unix, and that the free Linux operating system includes code stolen
from Unix.
Its claims suffered what is likely a death blow Friday when a judge in
Utah ruled that SCO does not, in fact, own the copyrights to Unix.
SCO issued a statement saying it would carry on with other claims
against Novell (nasdaq: NOVL - news - people ), and hinted that it
might try to appeal Friday’s ruling.
Passionate fans of Linux, a free operating system developed
collaboratively by programmers from around the world, have argued from
the start that SCO’s claims lacked any merit. On pro-Linux Web sites,
they’ve been celebrating since Friday, viewing the ruling as
vindication.
For SCO, it’s a fizzle of an ending to a case that began with loads of
bluster and bravado. In March 2003, SCO Group (nasdaq: SCOX - news -
people ), a tiny company based in Lindon, Utah, sued IBM (nyse: IBM -
news - people ), claiming IBM took code from Unix and put it into
Linux. SCO also warned hundreds of customers that they might be in legal
trouble for using Linux.
The suit got more complicated when Novell, an IBM ally, stepped forward
and said that Novell, not SCO, actually owned the Unix copyrights.
Novell had licensed Unix to SCO’s predecessor company, and SCO argued
that in this transaction it had picked up the copyrights to Unix.
Novell, however, claimed it had retained copyrights to Unix code.
Before SCO could pursue its case against IBM it had to sue Novell to
establish its ownership of the Unix copyrights.
The trial was set to begin in September. But on Friday a federal court
judge issued a summary judgment declaring that Novell owns the
copyrights.
In a statement, SCO said it was “obviously disappointed with the
ruling,” but also indicated it intends to carry on with its lawsuit
against Novell. “Although the district judge ruled in Novell's favor on
important issues, the case has not yet been fully vetted by the legal
system and we will continue to explore our options with respect to how
we move forward from here.”
Novell, in a statement, said: “The court's ruling has cut out the core
of SCO's case and, as a result, eliminates SCO's threat to the Linux
community based upon allegations of copyright infringement of UNIX. We
are extremely pleased with the outcome.”
IBM did not respond to a request for comment before this story was
published.
SCO’s claims against Linux angered the passionate fans of the free
operating system, prompting pickets outside SCO’s offices and loads of
heated invective. Linux is arguably the biggest thing to happen in
computing in the past 20 years. Its fans are celebrating now.

Hi all,
Turned out that most probably the ext2 fs on the /boot partition was
corrupted.Deletion of partition followed up by remaking with ext3 fs and
restoration of kernel,init files and grub got rid of the error and
everything is back to normal again.

Many thanks for all members for replying.
Shakthi, do you really have GTA01 model with you? In that case you are
few of the lucky ones to have it. As of today, they are sold out and
will be shipping next lot by Sept 10!
I would like to know more about your experience with the product.
Will it fine if we buy "Developer Version" now and then upgrade OS
once its released in october?
Shipping cost is now reduced a lot from 90$ to 60$.
Sharing shipping cost with 3 pieces, each will cost around 13250 which
is quiet affordable.
Back to original question, anyone interested in buying "Developer
Version" and sharing shipping cost?
Read more about "Developer Version" before making up mind.

Hi Rajeev,
Thanks for the reply.
You might have noted that current release is Developer Version
Release, it doesn't have stable OS and working applications.
But with moderate hardware, its priced currently at 300$.
I presume father would need a properly working phone. If you need
fully working OpenMoko, you can wait till October and getter retail
version at 450$ with better hardware or even you can get Linux based
Motorola ROKR E6 currently at INR 14000/- with 1 GB Card.
If you are interested in the developer version and jumping into
upgrading OS in October, do let me know.
I am happy with hardware that current model as its priced 300$, won't
be interested in paying 450$ for little better hardware.
Anyone knows whether Linux on Motorola ROKR E6 is upgradeable?
