G.I.S.S. comitee visiting India

hola/namaste, we are 2 members and developers of the G.I.S.S. collective ( http://giss.tv ), an international collective dedicated to free media through open-source technologies ( streaming ). G.I.S.S. is an open infrastructure for giving voice to alternative, minoritarian and non-commercial voices in the official media landscape. we ( lluis gomez i bigorda and me, yves degoyon ) have been developping open source technologies since many years now... and have been to brasil, palestina to make workshops before.. we will be in india from the 15th of September to the 15th of October. our original plan was to make a free media workshop in Dahanu near Mumbai with Nomad India ( http://nomadindia.net ), that i first met in brasil in the World Social Forum. yesterday, Hemant from nomad india sent us a notice that they won't be able to organize this workshop, as they are helping people victims of the flood in the region of Bihar ( Nepal ), as you must know... all the original plan is documented here: http://giss.tv/wiki/index.php/Workshop_India including the program of the workshop. so we are looking for other possibilities of meeting people working in open-source and free media. we could organize a short presentation, some workshop or even an informal meeting with people interested in these subjects. we have some funding from NL Net foundation to cover our travel and hosting expenses, so this is not a request for funding ). we could travel within this month across the country to Bangalore or New Delhi for example... so, let us know what would be possible to organize in these dates, knowing that we have to reorganize our activities in a short period of time, it can be some informal meetings ( in a hacklab for example, we like that ) ). hope all the situation will get back to normal in Nepal too.. ( we perfectly understand that Nomad had to cancel our workshop ) hope to meet some of you soon, we arrive in Mumbai on next Sunday 14th... all the best, yves degoyon, lluis gomez i bigorda and GISS team.

Debian Lenny Live Becomes Reality

Dear Friends, The Debian Live team is pleased to announce the first beta of Debian Lenny's Live images. Although we missed releasing images for Etch along with the installer images, we are now prepared to release live images within the regular Lenny release process. This is the first official release of Debian Live and the whole team has been working hard during the past 2.5 years to make Debian's own live systems become a reality. hi all ! have a look on this : " I was recently looking at the source of a wxPython-based GUI application, about 45.5KLOC in size, not counting the libraries used (e.g. Twisted). The code was written by Java developers who are relatively new to Python, and it suffers from some performance issues (like a 30-second startup time). In examining the code, I found that they had done lots of things that make sense in Java, but which suck terribly in Python. Not because "Python is slower than Java", but because there are easier ways to accomplish the same goals in Python, that wouldn't even be possible in Java." Hello, Here are some links worth reading. First is a user who tried to install Ubuntu on his eeepc after knocking off Xandros. He mentions popping in a cd in the drive. He may have forgotten to mention that it was an external drive. This is an interesting statement reproduced. "Geek Squad, a tech support service partnered with the Carphone Warehouse, is more used to dealing with problems with broadband and e-mail but later that night, Agent Jamie Pedder walks me through it over the phone. Download a couple of bits of code from one of the Linux help sites on to a memory stick. Whack the memory stick into the offending laptop. Bang a couple of lines of code into the terminal window to tell the machine to install what we've downloaded. Bingo, we're cooking on gas. Ubuntu's running my wireless network and I'm back on-line. Md5sum Input/Output Errors Crash System

Hello, I have downloaded the first 10 Debian Etch CDs and out of 10 ISOs, 2 or 3 had an md5sum problem. While the good md5 returns a proper checksum value, the bad ones return an Input/Output error. The problem is that when this error occurs, the link between the system and HDD is lost and no further commands are accepted as they need to be picked up from the HDD. The system blanks out and I have to force shutdown and reboot it. Yesterday I kept the Lenny live CD for download and its md5sum gave the same problem today morning. I had mentioned this problem earlier too and the HDD was suspected. However for the good ISO checksums there is no problem whatsoever. Why can't the system decently tell me that the checksum is bad, why does it have to break all connections and crash? -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! No Viruses No Spyware Only Freedom.
