At this site: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Networking-Overview-HOWTO-2.html I came across this. Linux has been copyrighted under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). This is a license written by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) that is designed to prevent people from restricting the distribution of software. In brief, it says that although money can be charged for a copy, the person who received the copy can not be prevented from giving it away for free. It also means that the source code must be available. This is useful for programmers. Anybody can modify Linux and even distribute his/her modifications, provided that they keep the code under the same copyright. Questions a) Does that mean I can buy 1 copy of SuSe/Xandros/RHES/ and distribute it as many times as I want? b) Some Linux distros have the system of activation keys. Is that in violation of GPL terms? For Instance, if I am required to activate my Distro online then logically the same activation key will NOT work for the copies of the distro? MTNL TriBand - unable to browse under Linux

I have a multi boot system with Win XP, SuSE 9.2, Ubuntu 4.10, which is hooked up to the DLink 502T ADSL modem/router provided by MTNL (no wiring issues). WAN IP is dynamic, LAN IP is 192.168.1.1. DHCP server is enabled on the router to dish out IP numbers. When I boot to SuSE or Ubuntu, or Knoppix 3.6, I am unable to connect to sites on the Internet (POP3, SMTP, HTTP etc.) using Konqueror or Firefox. When I point my browser to mumbai.mtnl.net.in or mail.yahoo.com, the status bar says "Connecting to ...." and eventually times out. I am able to resolve DNS names (using MTNL's DNS servers). I am able to ping certain hosts in the MTNL network such as mumbai.mtnl.net.in, their gateway, etc. Firewall is disabled (iptables rules allow everything). The routing table also seems to be OK (see output below). However, when I boot the same system to Win XP. I am able to connect and browse sites on the 'Net. Another interesting point, when I connect the system to another ISP Iqara (similar setup as MTNL i.e. a cable modem/router with DHCP) I am able to browse sites under Linux as well as Win XP. I am not an actual newbie to GNU/linux, but definitely to this group. Whenever, I read the messages that I receive through the mailing list, I am shocked and cannot speak at all. What I find is mostly issues that are based and faced in larger companies with huge amount of network complexity and databases. I have not been posting regularly to this mailing list and I hope I will start posting messages or attempt replies to wherever I can ... Please suggest what else can I do the help people using GNU/Linux. Secondly, being a student, can I attend the meetings conducted in the group. SAMBA config

Hi All, I am using Samba to let my LINUX server to be accessed by my WINDOZE PC's. I have it configured to use share level config and use it as a Domain Controller. It works fine, but I would like it to automount the shares whenever a user logs in to the network. It is possible in a WINDOZE NT or 2000 setup by using login scripts. But is it possible to use it in LINUX environment i.e. by using SAMBA. Everytime I have to manually map it thru Net Neighbourhood or check the option of Auto Mapping so that it is available in the next login. It helps, but I want to control which user can access which share. The share available to the user shall appear mapped whenever he/she logs in. I think you all understand my point. If not, let me know. Any help is highly appreciated. regards, rc

Hi ya all, We are using postfix as our smtp server. The mails are relayed across 12 different server using maps integrated to openldap. I have this requirement where in we need certain users to receive and send mails attachments more than the default as set by message_size_limit parameter. SSH hacking attempts

Hi All, Since past 2 days I am getting SSH login attempts at a rate of 1 attempt per second from different IPs. I believe its a script based attack to beark-in. How can I setup a security where-in I restrict max SSH login attempts from any IP to just 2 per minute. If this limit is breached, start to drop packets from the source_ip for 10 minutes... Cannot access internet through Win 2k proxy

Hi !!! At my company we have Windows ISA server to access net in local network and access to net is given on the basis of domain user ID and password which is asked as a pop up window in IE. I have install Linux 9 on my system and given the proxy settings in mozilla. I m able to access intranet sites in mozilla but when I try to access internet sites mozilla doesn't given any pop for entering user ID and password. what more settings is required. pls help. It would be good to learn from somebody experienced with any compatibility issues that may arise with proprietary hardware. So far the OS has installed fine. It has however not detected the onboard Gigabit Lan. The server has an Intel E7221 chipset (based on 915G) with an onboard Gigabit NIC Broadcom BCM5751. Problems encountered in installing the driver (Broadcom website): - Compiled the src rpms - ok - Installed rpm - ok - Modprobe - Failed ERR-> ('no such command') For the record we choose Fedora over Redhat EIS for which Dell charges 22K to be factory installed/supported! Got this switch Dlink DSS 5+, that barfed one fine day and is not working since then. tried whatever i could to get it working, but seems like a no-go. So any freak out there interested in playing with it and getting it to work or using it as a fashion statement, feel free to ping me offlist and pick it up. better it goes to a geek than to the raddiwala. if you can get it working, 2 brownie points for you for saving the world from a non biodegradable component. Hi Linuxers I'm trying to install wine on SuSe Linux 9 & getting following error. Unresolved dependencies: Installing wine-20050419-0.1[Local Packages] There are no installable providers of (any)libXxf86dga.so.1[[Any]] for wine-20050419-0.1[Local Packages] wine-20050419-0.1 is scheduled to be installed, but this is not possible because of dependency problems. Well yes using VNC or XClient is possible...! But the reason why i always used to do it via a physical console was coz anyways i had to go into the DC for putting the CD's in. But ur idea of loopback mounting the ISO is something i will definitely try out..! What if i have a the files and directories on the CD have been dumped and not the ISO...! Accessing home PC from office (behind firewall)

Hi list, I've been looking for a way to access my home machine from my office but to no avail. ssh/sshd remote login query

hi all, i was trying to implement vnc on a remote server via ssh. suppose a normal non-root account is called "user1" and assume that via sudo, i want to allow that user to run any command as user root without specifying a password each time he logs in for running selected programs. So, in that file, i added added: user1 ALL = NOPASSWD: ALL I know this does not sound good for security , so hence my post to you all .... what are the security risks and what are the precautions to be taken ? I want to restrict a user (or any number of users) to only run certain applications: Any idea/input is welcome thanks for reading-- _svaksh_

I am having some space constraints so hows this for a solution. On an existing desktop (AMD athlon XP, 256 MB) running FC3, can I also install FreeBSD using VMWare and run both simultaneously? FC3 is needed as the routine desktop and FreeBSD for testing. The usage of freeBSD OS will be via ssh so dont care about the gui. Has this worked for anyone? Dear Amit, The Oracle 9i installation program is a Java based program and does not have a TUI or a CLI as an alternative. You need have X installed and running while installing either Client or server. Atleast from my knowledge u cant install Oracle 9i Enterprise without X....on the linux box..! I even failed installing Oracle Client on RedHat Linux with a dump on the HDD...! Installing GUI Desktops from a minimal Debian install

Hi, I installed Debian Sarge .. however it was a minimal install. So I don't think the desktop managers are installed. How do I install them now? RedHat had rpms.. Now, all I want to be able to do, is use simple ssh, and if need be, tunnel a few protocols over it. I have done some reading up on ssh and IPSec, and see no security risk, in using ssh for what I want to do. But the network admin, just does not want to open up the ssh port. I can even try and suggest that he only open the firewall to my fixed IP address, and use keys rather than passwords, for ssh login auth, but other than password cracking, I am sure that simple ssh access, should not be a very serious security risk. Anyway, can someone please comment on this ? I am still trying to find a good article which discusses this issue. Thanks Shahed

Reintroducing message with subject change. KG I tried it on debian woody and sarge. It did not work. I installed from source wxpython-2.5.5.1. still no luck. Is there some widget set which needs to be installed or does avsap require wxpython in a particular location. How do we check. rgds jtd
