So will some other big names, include MySQL founder David Axmark. This year's event will focus on localisation projects, PHP5, Python, MySQL and more. There's an awareness-building exercise for school students and teachers on the first day of the event (Feb 13, 2005) followed by an installfest and more. Organisers announced today (February 7, 2005) that they were to have Apache co-founder Brian Behlendorf taking part in the event. Samsung printer problem

I have a Samsung printer (ML-1520) on a Fedora 3 system. It was autodetected as a ML-1510 and was working fine until I made the mistake of installing Samsung's own drivers. The printer no more works under Linux (it's fine under Win). Worse, I am unable to run printconf or printconf-gui to rectify matters. Uninstalling the Samsung software hasn't helped. JNI and glibc doubt

Hi All, I am trying to do a "HelloWorld" program using JNI. The command "java HelloWorld" gives me: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /tmp/java_native/libhello.so: /tmp/java_native/libhello.so: only ET_DYN and ET_EXEC can be loaded Relevant (.c .h and .java) files are attached. The stack trace and commands are in stack.txt. I am thinking of purchasing the HP LaserJet 1010 for home use. Does this printer work well with Linux? The evidence from Google is mixed: linuxprinting.org goes as far as to say this is a "Windows only" printer and is "not recommended" under Linux. Hello, You may contact my vendor Absolute (Contact no: 26845600). I would recommend you to go for parts of which services are readily available. I had a very bad experience of motherboard (ASUS - A7S 266 VM) going faulty within 6 months of purchase. Since it was in warranty period I got service from my vendor without much trouble but it took in all "a complete month" to get it repaired. I was told that Tech Pacific (now Ingram Micro) are the sole service provider for AMD based systems and they take minimum one month to provide service. I don't know if vendor lied to me. But for whatever reasons, I was deprived of my system for one month because of delay in service. So I recommend you look for vendor's reputation and quality of service by agencies responsible for any brand you opt for before you fix on one. As for the reliability part I have no suggestion about any brand. I have seen both brands AMD and Intel based systems developing problems over time. Regards Peeyush

The reason: HP will disclose hardware details under a very onerous NDA, which no sane person will sign let alone a FOSS developer. Cases in point winmodems, several canon and hp printers, flash disks, graphic display cards etc. However there have been a few cases that are the opposite, where the gnu.linux version is vastly superior eg. epson printers using gimp drivers. hi all, i would like to switch to linux from windows. but i feel nervous as i have never installed linux for regular usage like playing games, surfing the internet, etc. a constant fear lurks in the mind what if it does not detect my hardware, how do i configure it for cable internet considering that my cable internet provider may not know how to install internet on any other os other than windows. please can someone clear some of my doubts and give me guidance. thanks and regards, kevin

Hi I have been using Linux for the past 4 years (started out in mid 2000). My family members identify me as a linux Fanatic.After all these years they are used to names like Slackware/Red Hat/Ubuntu. My son who is 1.5 years old can already identify the logo of Red Hat.( I had casually mentioned this name along with other logos like pepsi,intel,ibm) and also likes the tux picture in magazines. I do not get much time to log on to my Pc other than office but the last time I started and ran windows was 6 months back. It is addictive!!!!!!! Ninad Bapat

Be happy that posters without netiquette are not booted out for consuming bandwidth, disk space, and other peoples' time. And posting to a mailing list is like singing in a bus. Unfortunately you won't get a WinXP style ease of use in Linux... if that was the case any flavour of Linux would be the only thing in the market today... Apart from whatever the base installation does for you, if you need something specific, there's a good chance that you'll need to know quite a bit of command line stuff to get it to work. This is what the base camp refers to as the Unix philosophy (lots of dedicated command line tools that can work magic if combined by the right hands).. but as you have experienced this is the downside.

Dear luggers, I have SuSe-9.1 installed on my machine. I am getting problem in starting X server. I am getting following lines(errors) while running #startx (EE) open /dev/fb0: No such device Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list! Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list! How to troubleshoot this problem. I have commented the fontpath in /etc/X11/XF86Config in files section but didn't worked. Red Hat has chkfontconfig to add and remove fontpath . How to set font path in SuSe ??? While this is happening My Xfce is working properly. I guess it must be font server (xfs) problem. what could be the problem and so does the solution ???? Thanks in advance. -Sachin

Dear rony, Apart from normal sectors of harddisk MBR is Very less written sector of the Disk, Imagine the number of time the normal data sectors get written and overwritten when U copy, move or delete data I don't think it ( MBR ) will get damaged or so... If U have experienced such a thing in past it might be that the harddisk is faulty and not be due to too many flavors of OS installed So go ahead install as many flavours as U like and Ur Hard Disk space support !! Dear Friends, I am looking for a GUI mp3 player for linux. I asked Mr. Google but he is giving me text based, command line or console based players. I even downloaded one package called zinf-2.2.5 but it has a long compilation required. There are a lot of bits and pieces available on the net like tools, plugins etc. I am looking for one which is fully self equipped, that comes with an 'install' shell script file that will install it into my selected directory and will give me a simple 'player_name' script to double click and run ( just as we simply install and run mozilla firefox or thunderbird ). hi, just installed FreeBSD 5.3 working fine. what i learned from the doc is that in order to make the sound card working you have to re-compile the kernel (or am i missing something?) but i have also tried the FreeSBIE 1.1 a live cd based on freebsd which automatically detects sound card, i am just trying to find which script in that cd does so. any ideas? -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content, and is believed to be clean.

Streaming Real Audio

Hi! The only reason I boot to windows is to listen to online streaming music from sites like http://raaga.com, http://smashits.com or http://indiahits.com They require Real Player, which I have on Windows and all works fine. But I want to avoid using Windows and listen to this music on Linux. I installed Realplayer 10 on my RH9 and FC1 boxes, and also installed the Mozilla plugin which comes with the package. But I am simply not able to listen to music from these sites. I came to the conclusion that these sites were designed for the Windows version of RealPlayer only, since they play songs in a window that has RealPLayer _embedded_ into them, as opposed to playing songs in standalone ReaPlayer. Sites which use standalone players (like http://www.shoutcast.com/) work great on Linux. Can I somehow play music from the above mentioned sites on Linux? PPPOE under Debian Woody

Hi All I have installed Debian Woody 3.0r4 and I am having problem configuring PPPOE, I am dual booting and I am able to use pppoe under Red Hat 9. Can anybody point me to some good link for configuration of pppoe, yes I have checked google. I referred various docs and tried various options but still no luck. Infact I had done same exercise earlier (around 6 months back) but was never successful. Is anybody through with the configuration of pppoe under Debian Woody (Mumbai)? Can anybody help me or if possible can I speak to someone on phone and get pppoe configured. Thanks... -------------------------------------------------------------- p.s. hi, i compiled a 2.6.9 kernel. its working fine except that its giving me some errors while booting and not logging kernel printk messages onto /var/log/messages. The kernel was compiled with debugging support and frame pointers. Many of the configurations options were changed ( i can send you the /usr/src/linux-2.6.9/.config file if required ). I am using FC3 on a P4 and the default 2.6.9-1.677 kernel is working without any logging errors. I have tried $ echo '7' > /proc/sys/kernel/printk but no use. What is the reason for the problem ? Is it because of some configurations options ( i think that is most likely ). When u r prompted for changing the default mtu select no.Check your /etc/ppp/options file and make sure that the mtu is commented out (default mtu = 1500) as your previous configuration could have changed that.That should solve the problem. i want my linux to act as windows when it is not shut properly usually when linux get bad shut it wait for admin to hit y to start fsck otherwise it will skip i want linux to start fsck as default and should prompt for cancling fsck (as good as windows) (totaly reverse to default linux fsck when bad shut off) making change in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit i have made linux to scan as default but it is not asking to skip fsck i made a change in line 228 default line is if [ "$AUTOFSCK_DEF_CHECK" = "YES" ]; then changed line is if [ "$AUTOFSCK_DEF_CHECK" = "" ]; then this change helped me to scan my linux when get bad shutoff even if i dont press any key it scans my hard drive and even when i press y or n

Forgive my ignorance here... I really don't think it's an ISA Card. But I'm not a h/w wiz. What is the diff... please enlighten so that I don't ask this again. Anyways, It goes into a PCI slot I think. Also no spurious interrupts, the c file won't build. I don't have the o/p right now.. I'll mail it tomm if reqd Methinks it's not in the right place ... missing headers or something the driver file mentioned that the files should be copied to /usr/src/linux in 6.x I don't find such a dir on my m/c. Need help with activating a network card in RHL 8.0

My installation detects the card as REaltek.... but won't activate it on startup or via the Network applet I have a disk which came along with the card which contains a .c file which seems to be the driver for 6.X . the installation procedure seems to ask me to build the .c file (I have never seen something like this in Win..) Anyways I did that and apart from a whole lot of error messages.. no new developments. There's a make file which also does the same thing.. Hello Gnu/Linux Users, I wanted to say that when we say ILUG in ILUG-BOM, aren't we ignoring "GNU" ? I think so because, it's "GNU/Linux", not the Linux kernel alone that we support. So ILUG should be more appropriately called IGLUG. And so, ILUG-BOM should be IGLUG-BOM. I maybe wrong on this since I may not know the reason for this. hi, in a cybercafe setup i have a mandrake server connected to dsl and squid and dhcp. The other machines are a variety of windoze stuff. I would like the facillity of enabling/disabling internet access for specific machines from the server. If i give each windoze machine a specific ip address, this can be done. Hi, I am using Fedora Core 2 w/ muttprint 0.72a-1 from http://muttprint.sourceforge.net/ I am getting the following error message : Can't call method "convert" on an undefined value at /usr/bin/muttprint line 1866. with muttprint 0.72c-1 also I get the same error, only, the error comes at line 1914. the program convert from imagemagic is already installed on my machine. The offending line in both is the same: return $utf2native->convert($string); could you please help me ? I checked the faq but this is not mentioned there. I wrote to the maintainer and he replied asking: ------- is 'libtext-iconv-perl' installed on your system? -------- My answer was as follows but I have recieved no reply from him to date. -------------------------------------------------- I can't find this package. hi all, I have installed redhat Enterprise linux 3.0 and Oracle 9.2.0.4 on a server.2 databases have been created on the same server. while connecting to these databases through an OS authenticated user thru Oracle it connects to an idle instance.prior installations with the same configurations have no problem.we are using exactly the same (as those for the working ones)bash_profile and enviornment variables for this as well. Following is the message on the server----------- Under ideal condition : sqlplus "sys as sysdba" SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production on Tue Jan 18 17:42:18 2005 Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation.
