hi,
i compiled a 2.6.9 kernel. its working fine except that its giving me
some errors while booting and not logging kernel printk messages onto
/var/log/messages. The kernel was compiled with debugging support and
frame pointers. Many of the configurations options were changed ( i
can send you the /usr/src/linux-2.6.9/.config file if required ).
I am using FC3 on a P4 and the default 2.6.9-1.677 kernel is working
without any logging errors. The printk messages get logged on to
/var/log/messages for the default kernel.
here is a diff of the dmesg from the default FC3 kernel (2.6.9-1.677)
and my self-compiled kernel (2.6.9-debug). The diff is very long so i
am putting only the relevant lines.
$ diff -c dmesg-2.6.9-1.677 dmesg-2.6.9-debug

Even after the kernel boots i donot get printk messages in
/var/log/messages or even on the virtual terminal. I have tried
$ echo '7' > /proc/sys/kernel/printk but no use.
What is the reason for the problem ? Is it because of some
configurations options ( i think that is most likely ). If yes then
what options are needed for correct logging. As far as i remember i
havent fiddled with the logging options while doing $ make menuconfig.
