Hi Karunakar, I am sachin I was working with Prof. Jitendra Shah till March 2004. I have developed Keyboard driver for Unicode Devanagari input. With this it is possible to type in openoffice, koffice, konqueror,mozilla,kate,kwrite,qtranslator,kbabel etc. using itrans. and it can also support inscript,phonetic, typewriter not only for devanagri but for all indian language input. can u give me Indlinux as platform for my work. I would like to meet u for showing the demo. also I need some help on xlib to eliminate problems in the driver. Actualy I am looking for a middleware, which will pipe all HTTP contents via the AV engine and back to squid. Just like what MailScanner does. !! Any suggestions... Problems in Fedora core 3 ..........SOS

Dear all, I had installed FC 3 and found that when system boots and starts rhgb it hangs !! I then replaced the rhgb rpm by the older one in FC 1 and it worked well... I have i810 board with celeron 633 Processor Also I think some issue is present in Xorg ( Xserver) When I have Xserver running and if I switch to my console using alt+ctrl+f1 or any such console .. X get killed.... This I have experienced in Redhat 7.0 on i810 boards but after Redhat 8.0 the Xserver was rock solid, no issues at all........ Can anybody throw light on these two issues.... Ur mail to list and a cc to me ( ssmahadik(a)yahoo.com) is appreciated........... tell me any way to avoid this or atleast some idea why this occuring........ Modem

Hi, I have Intex-PcTel HSP56 modem with me. Its working perfectly on my Win XP. I recently working on shifting over to Linux. But cannot complete that as my Modem does not work with Fedora Core 2. Please let me know if there are any drivers for the same. If I have to replace my modem which is the best compatible (and cheap!!) modem if I need to work with fedora. regards Prabhakar

H, I have tried different drivers with my current modem. My machine shows the details as ----:---- Class 0703: 134d:2189 Modem: PCTel Inc: Unknown device 2189 (rev 04) (prog-if 00 [Generic]) SubSystem 134d:1002 PCTel Inc: Unknown device 1002 Flags: bus master, stepping, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 9 Memory at ff8fe000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) I/O ports at d800 [size=256] So I am not sure if the modem chipset is recognized or not. The above was obtained using "scanModem" utility from linux compatible. one of the threads which closely relate to the problem I am facing is http://www.linuxcompatible.org/thread1001-1.html but even that is inconclusive. Is it advisible to try an older kernel instead of 2.6.x or try different modem? regards Prabhakar

killing a known process

Helllo: I am trying to write a shell script to get the process id of a particular process (slapd) and then kill that using 'kill -9 $pid'. I can get the pid by using prid= pidof slapd An echo of this for testing gives me the pid number followed by a blank line and then the prompt. Now the problem is when I am trying to use this variable in various forms in the shell script and get errors. option 1: kill -9 $prid Output: 20685 kill: usage: kill [-s sigspec | -n signum | -sigspec] [pid | job]... or kill -l [sigspec] ========================= Option 2: actual= "kill -9 $prid" echo $actual Output: 20685 ./testscript: line 4: kill -9 : command not found ========================== Option 3: actual="kill -9 $prid" echo $actual Output: 20685 kill -9 #The process is still running. Help! Can't boot into linux after re-installing Win XP.

Hi Linuxers, I'm having problem booting into my linux installation. I have Win XP on C: drive and root is on hda8. Recently, I had to re-install XP due to which, I guess, the MBR has got overwritten. Now, I don't get LILO on bootup. My distro is Mandrake 9.1 . Before re-installing XP, I had created a boot floppy from the Mandrake Control Centre module. I tried to boot using this floppy. It gives the boot prompt. I tried several commands at this prompt: /sbin/lilo linux linux image=/boot/vmlinuz linux root=/dev/hda8 Nothing works. Error message thrown up is "kernel image not found" or something like that. The floppy contains only one file by the name of "ldlinux" Next, I tried to use the rescue mode from the installation CD. The steps I followed are: 1. Boot into installation CD. 2. Press F1 for more options. 3. Type rescue at the boot prompt. 4. Screen shows - "Please wait - Loading program into memory" and shows these options at the bottom - "Alt-F1 for here, Alt-F3 to see the logs, Alt-F4 for kernel msgs". 5. On pressing Alt-F3, screen shows - *found a Mandrake Linux CDROM, good news! *trying to load /tmp/image/Mandrake/base/rescue_stage2.bz2 as a ramdisk 6. On pressing Alt-F4, screen shows- <4> hdc : ATAPI reset complete <6> end_request : I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 1261592 <4> hdc : cd_rom_decode_status : status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error} <4> hdc : cd_rom_decode_status : error=0x30 LastFailedSense 0x03 ...and on it goes. After some time, the main screen gives this message- "ERROR - Could not uncompress second stage ramdisk. This is probably an hardware error while reading the data. (this may be caused by a hardware failure or a linux kernel bug)" On pressing OK the screen goes blank and nothing happens. My installation CD is a little scratched but it used to work perfectly earlier. Could this be the problem? Is there any other way that I can remedy this situation? Please help. Hi all, There is a plan to have a Mega LUG meet / BoF Session, where people coming from different LUGs / places across country for LB/04 , would meet and discuss on how to make FLOSS grow in India. Some aspects that could be discussed are - How to increase FLOSS usage in education/organizational/individual levels. - How to encourage students to participate in FLOSS development - Increasing LUGs scope and reach. - TODO: suggest more points of discussion. More suggestions/ideas on how this could go about are welcome (& needed) Here this idea is not just meet up and have a fruitful discussion, but also evolve some kind of charter or roadmap, which could also be translated into some action. Duration of meet could be 90-120 mins. A rough plan on how it could go about #1 First get some common agenda / points which would form basis of #discussion in the meet ( these could be chalk out on list discussions #) 2 Those who may not be able to make it to the meet, can post their #view on LIG/LB04 list or in their respective LUG list (& someone fwd #it directly to me or to LIG/LB04 list ). 3 Those who would be making #for LB04 , make sure you are there for the meet Once the points for discussion are fixed, it would be good to have some people who have experience on them speak for few minutes, to set the ball rolling on those issues. Also we would need some volunteers, who can take some notes on discussions , summarise it and prepare up a report and a charter/roadmap/action plan document. Dear Linuxers, Due to my constant fooling arnd with GRUB and LILO and the MBR, i now face a problem. I cannot boot into WINDOWS: When I booted my machine I got two options DOS and Linux, when i select Linux it boots fine, when i select DOS i get an error Disk write error Pls press any key to reboot These are the things that I tried : 1. I erased the MBR and then did a lilo -v in rescue mode. No luck although. 2. Tried installing grub instead of lilo grub-install /dev/hda No luck 3. I erased the MBR and then re-installed WINDOWS in the same folder C:\WINNT I'am using windows2k professional. Hi Well the directory has 777 permissions, and I mean any user "xyz" not only "root". But the point is that as the file is readonly how is vi allowing to do forced write, and change the ownership of file? Even if it allows this then should't it be restricted to root or at most the owner/group-members!! The version of vi that I use is "vim-enhanced-6.2.98-1" on a RedHat9. Filesystem Check

I wanted to know if there is any 'scandisk' sort of utility for Linux. I know about "fsck", but it warns me against running it on mounted filesystems. It doesn't run even in the single user mode. Actually, after I went thru the startup scripts (Fedora Core 1), I saw that it checked for a command line argument ("forcefsck") and ran the checking utility. That worked. But is there a better solution than that? Knoppix doesnt detect my CDs

hi I use knoppix 3.4. When i load cd into my cdrom or into my cdRW and click on the CD-ROM icons under devices i get the follwing error message twice.... 1. mount: special device /dev/cdrom1 does not exist Please check that the disk is entered correctly 2.mount: special device /dev/cdrom does not exist Please check that the disk is entered correctly Also k3b deos not detect any CD-ROMs or CD-RWs in the I use a Asus CD-RW writer and a Samsung CD-ROM I did not encounter any problems when i tried to burn CDs in Xandros (but the burning speed is too less - 4KBps). Can anybody guide me as to what might be going wrong and how to tackle this situation. By the way, Happy Dipawali guys. Problem working with php

Hi all, I am facing some problems with working on "php". I have installed Apache 2 as the webserver on a RedHat 9.I also have mysql installed. I downloaded the php-5.0.2 source and on running the ./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs2 there are no error messages. make and make install also don't give any error messages. In the httpd.conf file th following lines were added LoadModule php5_module modules/libphp5.so AddType application/x-httpd-php .php But then upon opening any "php" file I still get a blank page in the browser. After a rush of blood to the head, I got Steven's network programming book and installed RHL 8 on my old machine.. But predictably enough, I got stuck in no time... after some tinkering with my drives and an accidental partition format, I have RHL8 on dual boot working . But the network doesn't work... So I have a machine running WinXP and lots of crunching power connected to my trusty P2 running Win98 and RHL8. The trouble now is that WinXP and Win98 autodetect network settings and able to communicate with each other. RHL 8 on the other hand is struggling to activate the ethernet card which it has detected. Task 1 : Activate the network card Task 2 : I think Samba is used to share files with Windows. What I need is to be able to browse the files on the Linux box via the Windows explorer and vice versa Any help or pointer to a how-to would be appreciated. Thanks, Gishu Pillai

[ILUG-BOM] Unable to boot from new Image after compilation of kernel

Hi, I am trying to load scsi drivers on my RHL8.0 kernel 2.4.18-14. As per the driver docs, I need to rebuild the kernel with scsi support and then load the modules. I have run the following; make menuconfig make dep make bzImage The image is created in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot directory and have copied the same to /boot edited /etc/grub.conf and added the new image as initrd /bzImage When I try to boot into linux using this kernel I get the following message. VFS: Cannot open boot device "LABEL=/" please append a correct "root=" boot option kernel panic :VFS: unable to mount root fs on 00:00 Am able to boot using the previously installed kernel. The other lines in grub.conf are copy/pasted and same as previous entries. Where am I going wrong. Do I really need to recompile the kernel or is there some other way to load the scsi drivers. One more info, once I make bzImage, it gives me the following information: Boot sector is 512 bytes setup is 4774 bytes ssytem is 1144 kb kernel is too high for standalone boot from floppy make [1] leaving ....... I tried deselecting some of the options like bluetooth, etc in make menuconfig, but the size of the bzImage does not go below 950Kb. Making Compressed CDROM in GNU/Linux

Hi! Wrote this small howto for making compressed CD's in Linux. New users will certainly appreciate the fact Linux provides much more features than just security,stability and speed as compared to other popular OS'es. Making Compressed CDROM in Linux Nikhil Joshi Introduction I had often wondered whether there is a way to zip your files, burn them on a CD and then decompress them on-the-fly to save space. Well the good news is there is a method to do the same! Linux provides a Transparent decompression extension to achieve the same. It is useful when you have a lot of text/HTML/ doc files to burn on the CD and you want to save the precious space. It is especially useful to view the e-books which are mostly in HTML format. Prepare the Kernel CAVEAT: Please note that the CD that we are going to make will only be readable in Linux environment as Windows does not have the Transparent decompression extension. First we have to enable the Transparent decompression extension in the kernel. Compiling the kernel is a tricky business and requires patience and will to learn something new. Download and unpack the latest 2.6 series stable kernel from http:// www.kernel.org/ 2. Type make menuconfig 3. Goto File Systems -> CDROM/DVD Filesystems and enable Transparent decompression extension 4. make; make modules; make modules_install 5. Copy the bzImage to /boot and update the bootloader configuration appropriately The commands Now that we have the kernel ready let's see the commands. Put everything you want to compress in a directory. First we make a compressed directory hierarchy of the directory we want to compress. $ mkzftree intree outree creates a compressed directory (outree) out of a normal directory (intree). Now we will make an iso image out of the directory hierarchy. $ mkisofs -o mycd.iso -R -allow-lowercase -allow-multidot -l -L - z outree That's it!! We have created an iso file which we can burn using any CD Burning Software. I use k3b (http://www.k3b.org/) on Linux. Conclusion I created a normal iso image out of a directory tree and another iso image out of the compressed directory tree. The space savings were obvious: 591MB for normal iso and 448MB using compression. A gain of 143 MB. This directory tree had lots of PDF files which do not compress well as compared to ASCII text files. Overall the space saving was considerable and I am already a fan of Transparent decompression. -- Often it takes some calamity to make us live in the present. Then suddenly we wake up and see all the mistakes we have made. But it is too late to change anything. -- Calvin

Hi, I don't have any pointers but this idea might help If you could enable passwordless ssh login to all machines, thru ssh, grep your log files with a pattern and redirect output to a file in those machines, scp that output file into a master node and check if file empty, good else not alert thru mail / console.
