report on the stake holders meeting

I attended the stake holders meeting in Mumbai at the Patent's office. The room was full of people, more than 80 people attended the meet. Of which about 30 were interested in the software issue. the rest of them are interested mostly in bioinformatics, chemical processes etc. What gave me solace is that this is not an attempt to modify the law. So, status quo exists. software patents per se are not possible in India. However. what the office is doing is it prepared a draft of a Manual helping the inventors in how to apply for a patent. In that manual, there is an attempt to suggest how to exploit the 'per se' and apply for software patents in combination with hardware. Due to several questions on this issue raised by several of us, and also due to written feedback submitted by quite a few others in Delhi meet, they are organizing a stake holders meeting in Bangalore later (in the coming three to four months period) where they are going to settle all the doubts and listen all the points of view. The date of bangalore meeting is not yet announced. Meanwhile, chennai and kolkatta meetings are still going to be held before the bangalore meeting. It is a good idea to send our supporters to both these places, so that the officers must see that there is sufficient opposition to this manipulation. Nagarjuna

[OT] Power over Ethernet (PoE) adapters - product suggestion

For power, my network device is PoE capable and also has a 12V/1A DC in. There are no power outlets near the device. Also, the ethernet switch does not have any PoE ports. I am looking for an adapter, that sits in the closet alongside the ethernet switch, with input a) Jack for DC12V/1A in, b) RJ45 LAN in (from switch), and output A) RJ45 LAN out (ethernet+dc power). Mr. Rajesh, of NIXI ( www.nixi.in / The National Internet eXchange of India ) will be in Mumbai on Monday, 4th of August. He would be visiting the Directi office in Mumbai and would be very interested to meet LUG members. One of agenda for the meeting is for sponsoring bandwidth for foss projects or foss setups like - local copy of sf.net, debian/fedora/ubuntu/yourfavdistro, indlinux mirrors. wifi card configuration help needed....

hey guys, I am trying to configure an atheros AR5007EG wifi card on fc8 with kernel version 2.6.25.11-60.fc8 i install it using yum install madwifi* it got install properly without any errors... but when i do ifconfig -a it doesnt show me any wifi interface i did modprobe ath_pci its shows me modules installed ... so i went through madwifi how-to ...there they have mention steps in to create interface but those steps dont work here is what i get:- # wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device #wlanconfig ath0 destroy wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device what those these means??? does anybody has configured this chipset on fc8 well i am configuring it on my acer laptop (Aspire 5053) Regards Advait Raut

Hi All, Around 2-3 Years back I handed over a "EduMorphix" CD to a kid. Recently I was surprised to find her using it even till date. I noticed that most of the applications on it are quite old compared with the versions that my daughter plays with. I want to give her a Live-CD with updated software since I cannot install anything on her dad's machine. Unfortunately EduMorphix does not exists anymore. How much time it takes depends on the kind of customization your looking for. On a Ubuntu / Kubuntu based system , you can use remastersys or reconstructor. http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu-linux-mint-livecd-with-remastersys Thats a how-to on remastersys to get you started. The only thing to remember is that remastersys will automatically include all packages installed on your system into the custom distribution. So its best to use it on a new install. That will prevent installation of unrequired software. Here is the link for Reconstructor : http://reconstructor.aperantis.com/ This is a good tool as well. Has some more customizations. The best way is to make a Live Distro from scratch. That way you can keep it quite trim by removing all unnecessary packages. You can also have a different window manager if you want to keep it really small. There are also tools to customize fedora , knoppix, slax , DSL etc. Another tool worth mentioning is Insta Linux http://www.instalinux.com/ Its a online app where u can choose what apps you want. Need Live CD Focused on "Education"

Hi All, Around 2-3 Years back I handed over a "EduMorphix" CD to a kid. Recently I was surprised to find her using it even till date. I noticed that most of the applications on it are quite old compared with the versions that my daughter plays with. I want to give her a Live-CD with updated software since I cannot install anything on her dad's machine. Unfortunately EduMorphix does not exists anymore. EduMorphix was just perfect, I dont know why they decided to dis-continue it. Freeduc (http://www.ofset.org/freeduc-cd) is not updated in a long time either There is no Live CD for edubuntu. But still it makes sense to read and understand them before implementation. Remember to encrypt your ssh private key. Never leave it on the disk in raw form unless you have some compelling reasons to do so. Sometimes using passphrase based encryption is not feasible at all, like to auto-execute some commands on remote system when human operator is not present in front of the terminal to supply it. In such cases, the private key is kept on the disk in its raw form. I am assuming that your are present in front of the terminal from where your program is fired. This will allow you to supply the passphase on demand. If your program is fired multiple times in a session or connects to multiple systems in a session then these password prompts might become annoying. In such cases, consider using the utility ssh-add. It takes your passphrase while starting up and keeps it in the memory for on demand supply. Thus you can supply the passphrase once and then run your program without supplying it again. But remember to run "ssh-add -D" when all your ssh related work is over. > Can any one please advice or guide me how to achieve this > kind of encryption. If you mean a custom encryption scheme here, I would say that cooking up such a scheme is always a bad idea. It requires a lot of mathematical skills to develop a good encryption scheme. In 2005, I was involved in the Patent Amendment Act 2005 and on behalf of Red Hat, we had made representations to policy makers on why software patents are bad for the Indian software industry. At that time, Lawrence Liang and Prashanth Iyengar of the Alternative Law Forum had done a fantastic job of putting together a position paper on this issue virtually overnight. Happily, our lobbying was successful and software was kept out of the Amendment. What makes me hopping mad is that the Draft Manual seeks to bring in through the backdoor, something that was explicitly rejected by the Indian parliament. To say the very least, this is a very dubious practice. Interestingly, Infosys and TCS are in favor of software patents. Those who followed the OOXML fight on this blog would know that both these organizations had voted in favor of Microsoft's OOXML proposal. If there are articulate FOSS developers in the Mumbai LUG, I would request them to be present at the 7th August 2008 meeting and explain to the group why software patents are against the interest of the developer community.

Is there any way to encrypt my password in the same script which system or script can understande but when any one else open my script not able to read that password line. Hi, I use an eclipse plugin called Mylyn [1]. Mylyn allows me to group my work into tasks (integrates with things like Bugzilla, trac etc.)[2]. The best thing that Mylyn provides is that it creates separate contexts for each of these tasks. The context influences what I see in a particular eclipse view. So for example, in the file explorer view in eclipse, I only see files that I have changed while working in this context. Additionally it also influences the auto suggest options. The context feature works great when you have to frequenly switch between tasks. It allows you to get back into the mode for solving a particular task. I was wondering if something similar for the shell would be useful. It could for example alter the history to only have the commands that you used in the context of working on a paritcular task. It could maybe even set up env accordingly. PC hangs on md5sum DVD.ISO

Hello, Off late I am having problems with downloaded DVD isos. Earlier I have downloaded 4 Debian DVD isos as well as the Etch Updates DVD iso and all their md5sum results were fine. Now I find that the Sabayon as well as the Debian DVD1 isos throw an 'Input/Output Error' and after that the link between the system and my HDD appears to be lost as no command is accepted and the system as well as the display goes for a toss. _simple_ checkbook balancing program

I am looking for a _simple_ checkbook balancing program. All I need is to be able to enter my debits and credits and be able to print it out to give it to my CA. The ability to print (ideally directly) is essential. Incrementing check numbers would be nice too. The ability to import a qif file is a plus point but not absolutely essential. Previously I used gacc w/ kubuntu 6.04 (and fedora -- I forget which version). This was the perfect solution. Unfortunately after upgrading to kubuntu 7.04 (and 8.04) gacc does not work. What happens is that though the program opens, there is no text in the menu bar or the status bar. The same is the trouble with cbtracker. Here again, the program starts up but I run up against this problem of no text in the menu or status bar. I wrote to the author and he suggested that it could be a problem with the gtk theme and maybe changing the gtk theme might help. Google also gave a similar answer but for older versions of kubuntu. The software that helped in these cases is no longer available for kubuntu 7.x or 8.x. I installed _all_the gtk-themes available. None helped. Asking on the kubuntu list turned up exactly zero answers :(. Okay so back to google. I found pycheckbook but it messes up the dates when it imports a qif file. All the dates are changed to the present date. Also, it won't print directly. You need to export to text then open in vim or OOo and more often than not the formatting is screwed up. I also found chkbk. Just a shell script but no export or printing support that I could find. Next was cbb. Again no direct printing possible. Then I looked at brinance. A cli program that takes a cli parameter everytime you run it. Depends upon Brinance.pm -- a perl module that the author accepts is not very perl-ish and hence may give different results. I looked at kmymoney, gnucash, buddi. Kmymoney, nicely integrates with kde, imports qif files correctly after a bit of fiddling. But it won't let me print just a record of my transcations. Too much shoo sha for my taste (or even need). I tried gnucash but it is greatly overkill. Buddi won't import _anything_ :( . Maybe I'm missing something but the import and export commands are greyed out. Hi, There are lots of technical questions and answers which are being answered on this list. Can you make this list a searchable list (instead of merely downloading the zipped files) or put it on yahoo groups (viewable by everybody ----- how does one prevent SPAM) or google groups so everybody can view it. Also, note that the OLPC XO notebook with built-in OLSR is available in Nepal for $ 125. I had got Microsoft Word and Excel and powerpoint to work under WINE on Kubuntu LINUX but then again it became non-workable the next day. I can't get Tally to connect properly under WINE. wlan to lan to internet

I have a machine w/ kubuntu w/ a wlan0 (runing w/ ndiswrapper) connecting to the net via braodband modem. I now want to connect my laptop to the net thru the broadband modem via the wifi. I followed this link: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-274790-highlight-adhoc+wireless.html I managed to get the laptop talking to the kubuntu machine and I can even browse the net on the laptop. The problem is that I have lost internet connectivity on the kubuntu machine :( . No ping, no web access, zilch. I have the follwoing setup: modem <-> (pub.lic.I.P) PC <-> wifi (192.168.1.202) <-> (192.168.1.204) laptop I have made the requisite changes in the commands shown on this page. where is the problem ? do I need any changes to this line ? route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw 10.0.1.1 I've changed it to route add -net 0.0.0.0 netmask 0.0.0.0 gw 192.168.1.202 regards, Sharukh -- Dr. Sharukh K. Hi, I recently got hold of the latest prototype of the above data logger that is being manufactured by a Mumbai firm. In looks it is an unimpressive rectangular box without a display. It is meant purely for logging trackpoints and waypoints. It claims to be 32 channel and has 4 MB RAM. It has 1. power/lo battery LED 2. Satellite LED - glows red on satellite acquisition 3. Computer/Memory full LED 4. Waypoint LED 1. Power button 2. Computer button 3. Waypoint button It runs on a Nokia cell phone battery and can be charged with a standard nokia charger. There is a serial port and a screw to attach an antenna. The antenna comes with a 3 metre cable and has a powerful magnet. A serial cable is provided with two outlets - one for downloading the GPS data and the other for direct instrument to computer reading. The cable also has a bell-push for recording waypoints. Usage: in a car, stick the antenna on the roof, the instrument inside and tape the way point bellpush to the steering wheel - similar arrangement for a bike. Walking, keep the unit in a pocket, the antenna in a shirt pocket and the waypoint bell push in your hand. Getting data: Connect to a PC using a serial-usb cable. Type cat /dev/ttyUSB0 > filename.txt, and the data is transferred. Hi, does anyone have a full/partial debian mirror ( dists - lenny , arch - i386/amd64 )? or anyone have fat (& unlimited bandwidth) to update one ( I have a june 2007 one - total download required would be about 20GB - binary only ). problem updating lenny mirror on slow pipe is by the time mirror is half update, a quarter of it would have already changed!.. actually i got my answer. yes it does require a server like VNC-server or any remote desktop server. Actually if you use CentOS [or any other distro for that matter] , it will automate the remote desktop access feature for you. The CentOS remote desktop app is quite configurable as well. but one more thing. how do i get a remote desk top. do i need to install a VNC in server also? to get this. if yes then is it possible to get a remote desktop without installing any thing to server? I cant really understand your question. However from what I understand, you want to find out whether the remote computer you are trying to connect from needs any additional software. [ Please correct me if I am wrong ]. Using a package called vnc-java , You can access your computer from any location that has a Java -enabled web browser. Installing a web server

Hi I have downloaded Apache2.2.9 tar file.The instalation guide asks me to copy the tar file in /usr/local/directory.but i am not able to do it because it says I don't have any rights since i am not in root.Also I tried to do in my own directory.This is what i did: I unzipped the tar file of Apache(its name being httpd-2.2.9.tar.bz2) in my own directory.Then using terminal i connected directory by 'cd' then did ./configure. After that it does lots of checking and then i did 'make' and after lots of procedure i did 'make install'.These were the instructions given in the LINUX FOR YOU magazine in one of the articles regarding setting up web servers.But then how do i know my server has started, Then anyone could anyone guide me with PHP5.2.6 installation in short word. who moved Mumbai?

Hi, I was editing the OSM map in the Juhu area, and found that, compared to the yahoo image and to the existing traces, the whole map seems to have slipped a good way south and slightly east also. I checked other parts of the map and find the same error every where. Since the existing GPS traces also coincide with the Yahoo map, I think that somehow someone has moved the whole map of Mumbai south and east. It may also be because my laptop has low memory or something, but i doubt it as I do not see the same problem in Delhi, Bangalore or Chennai. hi, today i was trying to boot centos live cd. I'm using MSI mobo, 512 Ram and Intel dualcore. If you can boot in verbose mode , you can tell us where exactly the boot process is halting. may i get centos DVD. This is from the CentOS Website. DVD's ----- DVD's are normally available for each version, but the ISO files are not normally included in the ISO directory. You can download the CentOS DVD's via bittorrent. This is because of the following reasons: 1. Files greater than 2 GB are not served properly buy the default apache included in CentOS (and many other distros), so external (public) CentOS mirrors would end up with large files that they could not serve taking up space on thier servers. 2. Including all DVDs in the mirror would increase the size of the CentOS mirror by 50% (it would be 1.5 x current). As we continue to release new arches and support for new versions, this would cause the size of CentOS to become to large; reducing the number of people who could mirror it for us externally. how i'll perform remote desktop feature in it. Cent OS live cd not booting

hi, today i was trying to boot centos live cd. I'm using MSI mobo, 512 Ram and Intel dualcore. i faced following problem. 1. it boots normally but after some after booting its not showing menu. when i press alt+f2 launcher does not open. 2. when i tryed this cd in diffrent computer it stops at starting. it only shows "ready". and after that hangs up. i have some other query too. 3. may i get centos DVD. 4. how i'll perform remote desktop feature in it. thank you.

Hi All, I am using an IBall Marshall Dual Core Laptop, it does not alllow the install of Linux as the installer, irrespective of the linux flavor hangs up, can anyone suggest a way to install Linux in the system. Most linux installers hang up without any error message I have tried the noapic and nolapic options in boot parameters with Ubuntu The BIOS is a Phoenix BIOS, but SIW reports it as COMPAL BIOS at present, it has windows installed in it and working fine Regards Surya Pratap

Setting up the network

Hi, I am trying to setup network to access the guest running on VirtualBox from internet. My current setup is as follows :- eth1 - Internet eth0 - LAN I set up network to work properly on VirtualBox following the how-to on gentoo-wiki[1] and was able to access the guest from outside. But, since eth0 is bridged to br0, the other PC on the LAN isn't able to access the internet. I don't have any more network cards. What would be the best way to tackle this? Should I create eth1:0? Open Street Mapping Questions

Hey, Since many people on this list have attended workshops or even done some mapping/tracing work, I thought I would ask some questions here - 1) Suppose you are walking on a particular street - 2 way street even - you encounter a few shops - say a big Sweet and Snacks / Hotel / School / anything, on the same street. Now how do you put those on the maps while GPS tracking and then tracing the map on the computer? I mean, the to reach the shop, you have to walk good 5 meters or such - at times - depending on width of foot path or such. Now those paths are not roads really, and they can vary from place to place. How to tackle such offsets ? 2) Suppose you have tracked certain part of your town or your route from your home to airport near your city. Then you fly to another city and then restart the GPS device. At that point the device generally has to re-initiate itself to capture/detect the satellites ( which it has to do anyway incase you turn off and then switch on a gps device - atleast in some devices that I have seen ). Anyway after it has done that, it calculates the Longitude and Latitude and hence the current position. What happens in this case is, the GPS device draws a straight line from City A to City B. Is there a way to avoid that / tackle that ? Any pointers ? Thanks in advance. Cheers! Hello, I came across a graphics software thats open source. It is called open source Xara Extreme. It can be downloaded as a tar.bz2 file that is a self running program. Simply go to the bin folder and double click on the xaralx file. You will need to install imagemagick first and its available in your distro's respective repository. I know this for sure that when the PC's ethernet card is connected to the DSL modem/router's ethernet port in "bridge" mode, the WAN IP appears on the PC's NIC i.e. the PC become visible on the 'Net. Likewise, is the same true when the PC is connected to the DSL modem/router using the USB ports on the respective devices? Hi, I was reading about Negroponte's one laptop per child. Now that is the USA / western / nuclear family concept. I would be happy with one laptop/computer per family. Now, if we added 50 million computers to India at Rs 5000 to Rs 9000 each we would not need connectivity to the internet. Please contribute to our discussion on the google group "open-mobile". Charitable inclinations do not give 50 million computers connected via mesh (free) networking to India. Here is a note on mesh computing from one laptop per child. Erach 2.9 Wireless Mesh Network Interface The wireless network interface used by CL1 operates as a conventional WiFi (802.11b/g) interface, yet provides several unique features crucial to the laptop's goals. Unlike traditional wireless networking, where laptops only communicate with network access points, the CL1 supports wireless mesh networking, where laptops may relay network packets for other laptops, greatly extending the reach of any network access points. In order to encourage a mesh network, the CL1 network interface is also designed for low power operation as a mesh node, even when the laptop is powered off. The mesh networking protocol is currently a variant of the upcoming 802.11s mesh networking standard. The CL1 will support 802.11s, when ratified, through a firmware upgrade. The current protocol and the 802.11s may be simultaneously supported at this time. Unlike traditional laptop wireless networking interfaces, the CL1 wireless mesh networking interface includes a processor capable of forwarding packets and maintaining mesh routing tables, independent of any other laptop resources. The network interface is notified when the main processor is entering/exiting suspend mode and it is capable of notifying the embedded controller that a network event requiring attention (such as a packet destined for the laptop) has occurred. While it is possible for this interface to operate even when the laptop is completely powered off, firmware currently limits operation of the network to when the laptop is either powered on or suspended. For operation in 802.11b mode, the RF output power is 17 dBm (+/- 1.5 dBm), with a receiver sensitivity of –87 dBm. Hello, A client of mine uses Ubuntu 7.04 and his PSC is HP 915. On visiting www.openprinting.org I was able to install the ppd file for 915 and printing was setup without any hiccups. OS: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, Gnome desktop. Over the phone, I walked a client, through the printer installation of Epson LX1050+ printer. During installation, I asked him to chose the recommended driver for the LX1050 that comes bundled with CUPS and to print a test page. The test page printed fine. Now he is complaining that it is printing very small fonts irrespective of the application i.e. Firefox, OO Writer. This is the first time I have installed a dot matrix printer (and that too by proxy). Logically, things should print per font settings in the application if the test page prints. I would appreciate any pointers to what printer settings I should be looking for to fix the problem. Thanks in advance. -- Arun Khan

He used Ubunutu for all his illustrations. Easwar plans to hold a Ubuntu Install fest at his college. He plans to give a presentation about Linux and also offer to install Ubuntu for anyone whose interested. Anyone wanting to help him in this can contact him directly. Easwar's presentation was discussed and it received inputs from everyone. Arun and Vikram had prior experience in advocating Open Source Software to people so they shared some of their experiences with everyone. Next everyone was introduced to Ms. Chanditta. She works for an organization that regularly holds workshops training people in Open Source Software. She is basically from the Media Industry and plans to open an institute in which she plans to incorporate Open Source Software. Although she is going to post her plans on the Mailing List shortly, she is currently looking for volunteers. She requires people who might be interested in teaching or helping out in her workshops. They hold workshops providing guidance about OSS to teachers , both from educational institutions as well as NGOs. Arun then spoke about his recent experience in converting a customer to OSS and the resistance he faced while doing that. He finally managed to convince the customer after a Live Demo. Different methods of spreading Linux were then discussed by everyone. Vikram spoke about his projects in wireless technology. He has also recently launched an initiative called PPP. This initiative hopes to build a legal framework for protection of personal privacy. Presently India does not have any such framework ; this was evident in the Aarushi Talwar case. Krishnakant then spoke about his experiences in converting people to Linux. He also spoke about the presentations he gave and the questions he was asked regarding Linux. He discussed certain projects he was involved in. He also shared a great story about the Open Source Community. He described how a Firefox add-on was created within 36 hours based on his request to the community. Sound problems with Hardy

After upgrade to Hardy, one of the problems I have seen is that you cannot play a youtube video and a mp3 in parallel. Not only that, even *after* the youtube video finishes, vlc will give you no audio until you close the FF tab with the video. There is a suggestion at http://linuxowns.wordpress.com/2008/04/29/hardy-heron-sound-problems/ . I will try it out later today. hi I am trying to edit a file through a shell script, but i am trying to edt it in a particular manner here is a typical scenario i am facing I have a file called script.txt withe following content : *the owner of the* *trademark UNIX* *is The Open Group* *an industry standards* *consortium*. [OT] Smart kiosks as an extention to manned counters.

Hello, Since quite some time, the Railways has introduced smart cards that can be used on touch screen kiosks to book tickets with varying choices like destination, single/return, number of adults/children and class of travel. The card costs only Rs.100/- and you get a free initial usage of Rs. 50/-. It is a pure cash card with no ID or papers required and is purchased across the counter. To recharge it, simply pay amounts like 50/-, 100/- upto 500/- and you get it recharged across the counter. I find this technology has tremendous potential for use in various Govt. as well as private organizations where there are long queues on manned counters. For example bill payments for MTNL, BEST. The Post Office is another department that would benefit very much from this. Multiple PO kiosks inside the PO could offer services like stamps, money-order as well as registered letters. Just like the current manned counters, you simply enter the sender and destination address and 2 identical sticker labels with bar codes will pop out. One is to be pasted on the letter and the other is the sender's copy. A smart plate on top of the machine can be the weighing scale for determining the postage as per the weight of the letter/parcel. The letter/parcel is then dropped inside a designated box. An extra feature would be to optically scan the movement of the letter inward as proof of dropping. This kiosk can also be placed in banks and enterprising shops who can be given....say 5% of all earnings through that kiosk. so now the Post Office is not far away but right near your home and the Postal Dept. does not have to invest in land or office manpower to extend its reach. The same technology can be used by courier companies too. MTNL's telephone exchanges too can use these kiosks for bill payments and adding/removing extra services to their subscription like changing plans, enabling CLIP. The kiosks can be linked with wireless networking so that it is immune to cable problems. I have installed GNU/Linux Ubuntu on the PC of one of the senior science writers. He was using Windows earlier. Now he is facing some problems using a feature of Windows Character Map, wherein he could assign a key to type particular alphabet in Shusha Font. He uses OpenOffice to type his article in Hindi. Hi all I use hindi input all the time too. There is a phonetic SCIM keymap available from oriya.sarovar.org ( http://oriya.sarovar.org/download/hi-baraha.mim) . However I did not like the keymap they had made , it reduced the typing speed for me, hence I took their .mim file and made some changes to it to make typing hindi faster as we have in Baraha IME system on Windows or the ISIS system on linux (more power to opensource!). My modified file is available at http://aniketvb.googlepages.com . The file should be placed in /usr/share/m17n (in fedora). I do not know the path in Ubuntu, the list users can please help. The usage is pretty simple का = ka कि = ki की = kii कु = ku कू = kuu कं = k + M (shift M . .basically M for the बिंदु on anything) श = sh ष = Sh द = द ड = D ध = dh ढ = Dh ॐ = oum मॅ = m ~ e ( three keys !) मँ = m ~ M (three again ) ऋ = Ru ॠ = RU क्ष = k + /+ S +h For जोडअक्षर use / eg क्लास = क + / + ला + स Enable SCIM in your system as input method and then in scim config , you can set the hotkey to trigger the input method. I use the default Control + Space as the hotkey and I have just enabled one keymap (ie this one) and the other is the system default. Go ahead and try it and let me know in cade there are any difficulties. I admit that this method takes a little time (few days) to get used to though! but it enhanced my hindi/marathi typing speed greatly Aniket (अनिकेत !)

right to left text entry

Hi, I am using Kubuntu 7.04 w/ openoffice. I have downloaded some avesta fonts and want to use right to left text entry. In openoffice I have enabled CTL and I even got the left to right and right to left toolbar buttons activated. There is no language pack for avesta. What is happening is that when I try typing right to left: The cursor is on the right of the line (as it should be I suppose). Now suppose I want to type _jack_ in _avesta_ it should come as _kcaj_ meaning that the subsequent letters must appear to the left of the preceding alphabet and the cursor must move to the left. What is happening is that the cursor remains at the right end of the line and letters appear to the right of the preceding letter. Surprisingly, when I type a punctuation mark, the cursor moves to the left side of the line and the punctuation mark appears at the left end of the line; the cursor changes from a straight line to what I can best explain as a golf flag, but typing another letter makes the cursor jump back to the right end of the line and its the same story again. Google is throwing up links with this same problem but no solution. I hope I am being lucid enough. I can give you any more info required. Hi all, Maybe we missed it in the commotion of a latest bollywood movie ;) , but still, "Big Buck Bunny" has been released a while ago and is available for download. http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/index.php/download/ Its a short-feature around 10 minutes long, but is pretty cool given the fact that it is released under a CC license. And quite obviously it was created using Blender[1]. AFAIK, the DVD set contains all .blend files and hence would be a perfect medium to showcase the capabilities of FOSS tools in Multimedia where it seems to lag behind a bit. Definition: <quote> Documenting the success stories of FOSS implementation in India-- Nature, Scope and Methodology of the study. The goal of the study is to bring out into public a reliable and independent compilation of some instances where FOSS implementation has been carried out successfully in India. A 'success' in this context is defined as one where there has been an acceptance of at least one FOSS technology or solution across at least one unit of organisation – a department, a project, an enterprise or an institution – either public or private, either IT or non-IT. In Debian Virtualbox, Guest XP Cannot Receive Packets.

Any help towards resolving this problem will be highly appreciated. Hello Everyone, I have setup Virtualbox OSE in Debian Etch and my guest OS is XP. I am using Samba and bridged mode networking in order to use the 'Host Interface' feature that allows the host and guest OS to talk to each other in the same subnet. I am facing a problem of networking in the guest XP. It's ethernet interface has stopped receiving any packets so it is no longer on the net. The History: The virtual HDD is on an NTFS partition so Etch was first upgraded to kernel 2.6.22 in order to use ntfs-3g. Then Virtualbox OSE was installed manually from the tar ball on the VBox site. It took a long time to compile and install but everything went smoothly. Initially Virtualbox was used in NAT mode so everything was fine and net was up and running in the guest XP. Then as per instructions on various websites, uml-utilities and bridge-utils were installed and the tap0 interface was set up. In Etch, Samba was installed as per various website instructions. At one time the 2 OSs even talked to each other and I could access shared folders. However after correcting some minor mistakes in my setup and rebooting the machine, the guest XP canot receive any packets. Once, manually changing the /dev/net/tun ownership even let me get communication back again. However the joy was short lived and after a reboot, even duplicating the same process yielded no results. Now everything is as per the book with proper startup entries but still no packets received by the guest OS. The brctl showstp br0 command shows that both eth0 and tap0 are alive and kicking in forwarding mode. The Mystery: What is amazing is that when I cross checked my Virtualbox by booting it with a live Kubuntu CD, it was and is always able to get its IP address by DHCP from my ADSL router and internet was up and running too. However the OS booted from the virtual HDD cannot get its net up. It was even knocked off and a new virtual disk and OS was loaded but still no result. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! "With reference to the recent happenings in connection with the ISO standardization process of OOXML, actions by or on behalf of Microsoft have caused me deep pain and hurt. Apart from the personal anguish, these actions have tarnished the name of my Institute along with that of several other organizations represented on our committee. In my opinion, these actions go well beyond the behavioral boundaries for a commercial entity. some of these amount to interference with the governance process of a sovereign country. Luckily, wiser and experienced people are in-charge of governance of the nation. However, as a humble teacher and a proud Indian, I wish to register a strong and visible protest." Port mapping in linux

I have the following situation: A windows based program that lacks proxy support is on my secondary computer, which is connected to the internet *through* the primary (linux) one. Now in windows I use AnalogX's portmapper ( http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pmapper.htm ) so that all data received by the primary on certain ports is forwarded to a certain IP on the same ports, and any data received back is sent to the secondary computer. Is there a way to do this is Linux? I tried iptables but couldn't figure out the exact rules required. Thanks a lot. Nikhil

[OT] ekiga setup ...

I am trying to use ekiga but have not had much success. During setup of the ekiga client it correctly detects that my system is behind a NAT and configures it appropriately. The client is able to login to "ekiga.net" and I guess I am "online" because I am notified of incoming calls. However, when I accept the call, I cannot hear the far party nor can the far party hear me. My network setup is as follows: | ekiga client-------| | *|-------------------| +|--------- Internet (ADSL) ekiga client is 192.168.1.68 (Ubuntu 8.04, ekiga v2.0.12) * Linksys WiFi AP - LAN port is 192.168.1.1, WAN port is 192.168.0.9 (Nodes on LAN NAT'd on the WAN port) + DLink DSL502T router/modem - LAN port is 192.168.0.1, WAN port is dyn. IP (PPPoE) (Nodes on LAN NAT'd on the WAN port) Would appreciate pointers from anyone who has used ekiga successfully - please share your setup. TIA -- Arun Khan

CD Writing at 24x

Hello Everyone, Current laptops and older desktop cd writers have a write speed limit of 24x and the current Moser Bayer 52x media do not write at that speed even in DVD writers. 32x works fine but drives with 24x limits are handicapped. Hi, I bumped into this wonderful tool while following up with something else. So if you have worked or going to work in a mixed VCS environments - work with git, svn, bzr, mercurial all at one go :), you might want to look at this tool. Its already in Debian, somebody needs to put it in Fedora, OpenSuse and other distros. "The mr(1) command can checkout, update, or perform other actions on a set of repositories as if they were one combined respository. It supports any combination of subversion, git, cvs, mecurial, bzr and darcs repositories, and support for other revision control systems can easily be added. HI i had a small query, i wanted to know if it is possible to create a home directory for a particular user by just editing the /etc/passwd file. Suppose for eg : i have abt 1000 unix users, and due to some unforseen reasons my server crashes, however i have copy of the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow file , Now is there a way to directly add those ( 1000 odd user ) to my system with out actually manually using the useradd command ( yes, it is possible to write loop script that will read the /etc/passwd file and create the users ) but is there any other way to do this. thanks for your feed back -- Regards Agnello Dsouza www.linux-vashi.blogspot.com

hi, rony introduced me to this list. i want to examine the technical and business and accounting implications of an open-source company to replace a cell-phone provider like AIRTEL. 1. uses shoutcast (for free radio). 2. uses video editor of kde linux. 3. uses kubuntu linux in server / enterprise and desktop mode. 4. uses alibaba.com for sourcing parts/assembled computers. 5. uses tiny erp or open source erp for interfacing to its customers with the same call-center screen as customer service reps use (no hidden marketing costs). 6. gives free education to all --- or open-source education. 7. uses open source cpu and chip set design ( i remember the macintosh had minimal hardware since cpu did everything ---- a friend of mine had commented on this). 8. all-in-one monitor or keyboard pcs (see alibaba.com) 9. integrated networking remember, open-source business practises too. i did my b.tech in computer science from iit-mumbai (all electronics courses taught) and phd in computer science from university of minnesota, minneapolis (did enough courses in electronics/vlsi to qualify for a minor). i feel the chipset design // open-chip-set can be done. we need something cheap ---- we need a solution for the teeming masses of india. remember billing is important ---- so we use open erp. is it true the gnu license now requires service providers (like google earth) to make their code (and perhaps expert system rules too) open-source.

On my way I cam across a pirated CD stall at andheri station and was surprised to find a 'pirated' copy of Fedora core 8. I went up to him to ask for a Debian DVD. "What's that?", he asked. I told him it was a Linux. I/O Error....Cannot read from fd0

Hello Everyone, Some time back I read a message about this error showing up when Ubuntu was booted live. I cannot recollect whether it was on this list or elsewhere else. However today at a client's place when I tried Kubuntu 8.04 + KDE4 live on an unbranded Intel 865G mobo, it showed the same error lines after the initial kernel loading. After a second try, I let it move further and after 4 or 5 lines of the error, it booted further normally and brought the desktop up. One very good advantage of 8.04 is that NTFS partitions can be directly viewed in the GUI file browser (Dolphin) with write access. Finnix - A Lightwieght Diagonistic CD

Hello Everyone, I was looking for a Debian based live CD for diagonistic purposes and came across a very nice featherweight distro called Finnix. Here is what the site says..... "Finnix is a self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution ("LiveCD") for system administrators, based on Debian testing. You can mount and manipulate hard drives and partitions, monitor networks, rebuild boot records, install other operating systems, and much more. Finnix includes the latest technology for system administrators, with Linux kernel 2.6, LVM2, encrypted partitions, etc. And above all, Finnix is small; currently the entire distribution is over 300MiB, but is dynamically compressed into a bootable image of about 100MiB^1 <http://www.finnix.org/#endnote_isosizes> . Finnix is not intended for the average desktop user, and does not include any desktops, productivity tools, or sound support, in order to keep distribution size low." I downloaded it yesterday night and tried it today on my system. Booting is fast and takes you to a root prompt. It has a lot of applications for administering disks, testing the internet, even has pppoe tools. I was able to make a pppoe connection and surf the net using lynx. The best part is that though it is featherweight, it uses the latest kernel so it can mount ntfs partitions with write enabled for taking backups into them. When you mount the partition, simply replace the normal -t ntfs with -t ntfs-3g. If you are into maintaining GNU/Linux or Doze systems, this CD is a must have. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! After 4 or 5, the boot process continues further. But when it gives error and stops the boot process (like in the OP's setup) it would best to disable devices, in the BIOS, that are not present. This is my approach when I put together any system. I disable any device that is not present or not required (e.g parallel/serial port). -- Arun Khan

Strange problem with installing (K)Ubuntu.

Hello everyone at LUG-BOM, I am facing this strange problem while trying to install Kubuntu/Ubuntu 7.10 on a friend's computer. The media integrity is verified as I used the same CDs on his laptop and they worked fine. However I got the following error while trying to install it on the desktop computer. { [ 0.476000 ] .. MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC [ 0.476000 ] Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the `noapic` option. } I did not try the apic=debug and the noapic options as i am not aware how to set the boot options. Any help in this regard greatly appreciated. Of particular interest to IndLinux is that NIXI is willing to (a) fund localisation work carried out by distributed community groups in the country, (b) fund projects aimed at polishing open-source Indian language tools, and deploying them, e.g., making sure that OpenOffice, and Mozilla Indian language packs get built, and distributed, and (c) provide bandwidth, and hosting to such open-source projects. 6. Deployment of Indian language, and other open-source software developed in India, and/or targeted at an Indian population. Their examples were Hindawi, Dhvani, etc. The goal here would be to (a) put together software that demonstrates the use, and (b) convince people using proprietary alternatives to switch. 7. Survey of sites in the .in domain: Someone to carry out a study of .in sites (which are currently some 4.5 lakh in number), categorise them, and give awards to the best sites in various categories, e.g., best Hindi/Indian language blogging site, best open-source site, etc. 8. Rework syllabi at elementary, and middle school levels to replace references to proprietary applications with generic teaching, and/or references to open-source alternatives. 9.
