Actually the X issues are pretty darn irritating. I had kubuntu running on my laptop, since I wanted to introduce my brother to it. Well, everything said and done, he wanted to connect it to his lcd tv. Now, we had it running before on windows, gave brilliant output. But somehow getting X to do it was a real PITA. Also, getting lcds to give you refresh rates of over 60 is another issue. To top it off, people in IRC just say to use LCDs at 60hz. Trust me when I say this, there is a difference between 60 and 72/75hz in LCD's. Even tho the LCD refresh rates are different to how CRT refresh rates work. Even CRT's on X can be an issue. My SyncMaster 793s w/ Geforce FX 5200 for example, gave the default of 60hz. The default settings kubuntu gives is at 60hz. Ofcourse a little tweakingin xorg.conf, I had it running at 85. Also, even tho kubuntu ships with the default nvidia kernel, it still uses the nv driver. Something I fail to understand because if you use the nvidia driver instead, you gain some performance increase, including refresh rates. (Ive seen some difference between nv@85 and nvidia@85). I had to move from nv to nvidia to get beryl working, but as soon as i did, the monitor adjustments and everything felt a bit sweeter. Kinda hard to explain. Considering the major GFX chipsets are either nvidia / ati. This really should be taken care at the distro level. I am not totally all anti MS and stuff. Thats not the way I think, but honestly its all about the freedom of choice. People today are looking more towards an iMac than they did some years ago. Why? Well, thanks to vista believe it or not. As the old saying goes, immitation is the best form of flattery, people know that vista is a pure rip off of the mac tiger. However, their main concern for moving out is backward compatibility with their existing OS applications. What they fail to realize isthey can get most of it working today either through the likes of Wine or virtualizing your old existing windows. In which case you are free to migrate while at the same time giving you the option of moving back and forth with a live system. Whats this got to do with pushing linux. EVERYTHING! Vendors and users alike are sometimes unaware of the power of virtualization and what Wine has to offer. Most office people today mostly use spreadsheets, word documents, and emails. Offices mostly run on intranet solutions. Most other applications they have access to are mostly written in Visual Basic. Of which these applications do seem to run fine on wine. If they do have any other applications, they can always boot into windows and use it as and when they need to, encompassing the security of the host OS onto the guest os within a sandboxed environment. Ofcourse the possibilities of this could be rather endless, as organisations which can look towards thin client computing, mostly dont due to their dependency on windows environment. This factor can eliminate that as well. If vendors and users are aware that their choice of moving can be complimented instead of complicated by dual boots etc., then they will feel more likely to accept a solution which can favour them, specially where licensing issues can be a concern. VMware does have alot of its application to support this for free so it would be a great way to get your feet wet. Regards, Satish

Hi people, A few days ago my computer vendor came to me with some real problems regarding Linux. Hes a small time guy who supplies assembled PCs to individuals and maybe some small companies. Anyway, he owns an office and himself is pissed off with Microsoft's products as he has to format the machines every other day. Another reason pushing him towards Linux is that hes now getting inquiries regarding installing Linux from home users. And Vista cracks are not yet stable and widely available :P After having a small chat with him, I got his requirements. For office use, he requires: 1. Microsoft Office - docs and excel spreadsheets 2. Internet Explorer - surfing / banking etc.. 3. Tally - accounting Now, I'm aware that he has the following alternatives: 1. Open office 2. Firefox 3. Tally ( Linux version ) But the problem with Open Office: 1. With average machines, it performs slow 2. The documents it generates are not 100% compatible with Ms.Office 3. Advanced features are not completely compatible But they need to inter-operate with the rest of the world which means a good compatibility is important. Another problems that one generally faces is that Linux doesn't always work out of the box. When it does, it works wonderfully well but when it comes down to tweaking it to get it to work, its like performing a brain surgery ( for a newbie ). One more issue that I perceive is that distros don't always have good hardware compatibility. Let me explain it in more detail. Ubuntu 6.06 worked well on my friend's machine. No issues. But Ubuntu 7.04 refuses to work on the same machine. Some driver compatibility issues. The other issue that people in India generally face is of bandwidth. Ubuntu installs well. It impresses them. But then it runs up HUGE bills downloading softwares. What are your thoughts on this? How can we work with these people to effective push Linux into homes and offices? DHCP client configuration

I am trying to configure fresh install of slackware 12. I configured eth0 to use DHCP. When I run `dhclient eth0`, I get messages like DHCPDISCOVER 255.255.255.255 ...no response DHCPDISCOVER 255.255.255.255 ...no response ..... .... And I cannot get any IP from my ISP. DHCP and pppoe works fine in windoze. While in ubuntu there is entry for eth0:avah and DHCP as well as rp-pppoe works fine there. Do I have to specify DHCP server ip? In that case how do I find DHCP server's ip on my network? I use internet from pacenet. -Omkar.

Hi all, I have 2 nic's in my machine with FC6 loaded....... iam assinging two same range ip's i.e 10.0.10.1 & 10.0.10.2 with all the subnet mask and gateway address being the same for each of the interfaces...... i am taking the lan cable and inserting to the first interface and pinging the gateway, its pinging and its ok. but when i take the same cable and insert into the other NIC it is not pinging the gateway....... The entry of default gateway in the routing table has a special meaning to it. It is to be used by the kernel when the destination address of the packet being pushed out is not reachable by using the other entries in the routing table. So it is not interface specific, but system specific. If there is an entry for the default gateway, then that address must be reachable via one of the other entries in the routing table. It won't; until the kernel knows that you have removed the cable and decides to use the other interface to move the packets to the gateway. It doesn't happen in the kernel automagically. The problem here is pertaining to possibility of reaching same destination via two interfaces. That's why I asked in the beginning, why you want to create that possibility by assigning same network number to two interfaces. A packet goes out of the system via one interface only, even if the other is configured to carry it. In this particular case, the kernel is pushing the packet to the gateway via first interface. When you remove this interface from the switch/hub and connects the cable to second interface, kernel doesn't care. It uses the first interface only. You need to bring down the first interface using command "ip" or "ifconfig". Then only the second interface will be used to reach the gateway. Hope that clears the matter. Raghu

Not able to ping two ethernet interfaces connected using cross cable in same PC.

Hi Team, I want to test ethernet driver for NIC, I have only one PC with two different NICs(for both drivers are different), So I disabled loopback and connected both the NICs using cross cable. Output of "ifconfig" is displaying both the interfaces and ip address is also set for both the interfaces. I executed following to set ip address : #ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 #ifconfig eth1 192.168.0.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 #ifconfig lo down After that I tried to execute following commands, #route add -net 192.168.0.5 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.0.5 dev eth0 #route add -net 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.0.1 dev eth1 but those comands are giving error like : " route: netmask doesn't match route address" I also put "1" in ip_forward file. I am not able to ping anyone of those interfaces using ping command. Can anyone give some inputs on this? Thanks, Bhavesh.

Hi I am trying to install fedora core 5 in one of our server, problem was my network adapter was not detected. i download the source for intel pro 1000. which as per the instructions when i "make install". i get error "make file:66: *** Linux kernel source not found. stop." I tried for kernel compilation. but coudnt find kernel in /usr/src i can only find a folder redhat there. i am newbie with fedora. can somebody help me with this

Hello All, I had an old Lamington Road power amp with equilizer that went kaput twice and finally its speaker set that I had made from discarded huge wooden speaker boxes and 8" Phillips Hi-Q speakers were lying idle, gathering dust. I was using a 2.1 channel computer speaker set for my TV set top box. As an experiment I removed the small satellite speakers and replaced them with my old speaker boxes and now I am enjoying theatre like sound for programs and movies. oopss got trouble only terminal no Xwindow

cpu-intel celleron 1100MHz 128MB RAM and more important display hardware Intel 82810E graphics controller Board-Mercury(AT support) at first i installed Debian(IT SCHOOL latest) then after booting a gray screen wil come(not even the login screen) then it displays { could not open default font fixed X10:fatal IO error 104(connection reseted by the user) on Xserver ":0.0" after 0 request (o known processed) with 0 events remaining } but i could use the terminal at dat time too.. den i tried to reinstall Debian with the old CD(IT SCHOOL test version) again... it was done proper i said thank God... at last there was a Login screen i loged in..... but the same thing the bad old gray screen with the mouse pointer again came.... mouse pointer was not moving..... with gods grace terminal was der for my help. i logged in as root and removed the file /tmp/.X0-lock and restarted the Xserver.. den i got dis { X windows System version 7.1.1 Module loader present ...... ...... blah blah blah..... Markers (==) log file "/var/log/Xorg.o.log" Time..... (==) Using config file:/"etc/.X11/Xorg.config" ..... ..... ..... (EE) AIGLX:screen 0 is not DRI capable Xkb_keycodes {include "xfree86+aliases cqwerty"}; xkb_types {include "Complete"}; xkb_Compatibility {include "Complete"}; } den i thought to boot a live cd(knoppix 3.3 old stuff) to test there is any trouble. machine has got two mouse 1-PS/2 2-serail both were not working with Debian live cd worked fine....... i have pugged the serial mouse.. it too worked fine.... den i tried to fix the trouble with the mouse... and logged in as root to the Debian... and went to edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf In the pointer section the previos entry was { device /dev/input/mice protocol ImPS/2 } i changed dis to { device /dev/input/mouse0 protocol PS/2 } and then restarted then also the same trouble is there bt some thing interesting the MOUSE was moving.... very slow... i need help so wat is the problem here.... and last one more thing this machine works fine in Windows XP......(Even both mouse)....

In case you do have a passphrase you can use an ssh agent to load the private and once you key in the private key the agent takes care of the connection and for further it will not ask for the passphrase. I think you can also tell the ssh agent not to take input from a file and not standard input. Look for it other ssh agent will solve the purpose. See ssh-add it will do the trick for you. Fedora7 with Multimedia--Installation Report.

Hello All, Though faithful to the Debian based distros, I could not help flirting with Fedora 7 which is being touted as a great distro. It was the bootable DVD that came with July 2007 LFY. The hardware, Pentium-4 2.4 Ghz., Intel 845 GEBV2, 256 MB RAM, Samsung 80 GB IDE HDD, Sony DVD writer, Samsung CD writer. The DVD cleared the media test and the installation began. When you come to the partitioning part, please note that like other distros it does not list choices in radio buttons or check boxes. It is a drop down list. I did not see the list and checked a manual option placed below. However the warning that my entire disk will be formatted saved me from a Himalayan blunder. The drop down list has the actual manual option. After that installation was smooth. When it comes to the packages part, please select everything you want from the DVD in this step itself. I did not do that and found that the DVD repo is not added to the Yum package manager after installation. So everything selected later is downloaded from the net. By default, only Gnome is the installed desktop. Installation looked slower than Kubuntu, though the number of packages is similar. Fedora 1007, Kubuntu 950 approx. Post installation was smooth too. The screen resolution was 1280 x 1024, a very nice thing. However it was switched manually to 1024 x 768 for easy reading. Sound setup comes up during first boot and you can play a test sound. The wallpaper is great. You are floating above the clouds with hot-air baloons around you. The top panel bar does not have any applet enabled on it but you can add whatever you want manually by right clicking on the panel and selecting 'Add to panel'. I liked the 'Dictionary' utility very much. 'Eyeballs' are nice too and move as you move your mouse. Next to the date is the user's Name, which is handy for the boss to know who is logged into the desktop. By default the user does not have sudoer rights so you need to open a terminal and 'su -' with the root password. Edit the file /etc/sudoers. In that file, go to the entry which mentions '## Allows people in group wheel to run all commands'. Uncheck the option below it. Keep the % sign. Then edit the file /etc/group. In the line containing the wheel group, after root, put a coma and add the user_name. This will make this user, a sudoer. For multi-media codecs, go to http://fedoranews.org/cms/node/2853 and follow the instructions as given there. Copy the commands and directly paste them into a gui terminal using Shift + Insert. Please add sudo to the beginning of every command or do the whole exercise as root 'su -'. From that web page, please note that VLC player installation is optional and not necessary. The same is true for the installation of Amarock, as it is kde based and is a whopping 77 MB of download from the net, due to extra kde components. It can play mpg, wmv, mp3, 3gp, dvds etc. DVD playback is good. However VCD playback is kinky and after a few seconds of video and sound, it crashes whatever player you use. I tried 3 and all crashed. Looks like the new kernels are not VCD friendly. I could not try the USB of the MTNL ADSL router as mine is a 4 port one without usb. Overall a very good system and very pleasing to look at. I could not try out kde in it as it would have to be downloaded from the net. Oracle on RHEL 4

Hi, We have installed Oracle 10gR2 with patch updated to 10.2.3 on a RHEL 4 , update 4. Some how the dba made a mistake to install the database file on / folder instead of the /var folder which had loads of disk space. Now the / folder is used upto 100% of the disk space. Can creating a softlink to /var/database/ help in this case. Is there any other way to resolve this problem thanks Hozefa

If you feel antsy about trying out the latest gutsy tribe releases but want that 1 slick new package AND don't want to mess your current install with dev libraries try this prevu - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Prevu Basically an automated backporting script that compiles the newer package from the further release, under a fakeroot :D . Linksys wrt54g setup questions

Hi all, Yesterday I was trying to set up my home network using the Linksys WRT54G which I recently purchased from the US. The setup I am trying to achieve is: My TriBand connection is to be shared between my desktop (ethernet) and my laptop (by 802.11b/g). Some issues: 1) The router docs clearly say that I have to run an installer from the CD before doing any cabling. This is possible only for windows. What is the procedure for Linux users? 2) The power cable is rated for 120V/60Hz. I plugged this into a wall socket for a few minutes and did not notice any overheating. Can I conclude that this is ok to use? Anyhow using this power cable, the power LED did not glow. I will shop for a suitable cable today. Can you suggest what rating cable I should use? Keyboard dead after KDE starts.

Hello All, My dad was working on the Kubuntu 6.06 laptop creating a document on Open Office. After some lines, he could not type anything. He saved the document using the touch pad and the File > Save option and shut down the system using the touch pad. When I had a look at the system, I found that the keyboard goes dead after desktop is up. Before that till the gui login prompt, everything works and I can go to Ctrl + Alt + F1 console. But after desktop is up no key works except Fn + Brightness, Fn + Touch pad on/off which are hard (ware) keys. I created a new user in console and gave it a password. At the gui login prompt when I enter the username and passwd, it cannot start the desktop and gives a message "Could not start kstartupconfig. Check your installation. ...OK" I can login to the original user without any errors but keyboard is not functional. I can open/close programs using the touch pad. Is there any way to solve this problem without reloading the OS? Is my file system corrupt? The lappy is ok as I can boot into the other os Mandriva 2007 and use it flawlessly. Regards, Rony. I just got an ASUS m2nx motherboard with AMD athlon dual core 3600. This has nvidia chipset. Tried loading ubuntu 6.06 on it and it gave X config error. Was wondering if anyone has encountered a similar problem and how it can be rectified? Would loading 7.04 fiesty fawn, resolve the issue? If yes, then does anyone have a copy handy and if within my reach, I can pick it up. problem with configure, linking

Hi, I am trying to build some packages, as shared. While building, even though I specify -L<lib_directory> to configure, it is not fetching the libraries which are already in the library_directory(shared ones). The compilation stops in the middle showing missing libraries which are already present in <lib_directory>. I have to edit the Makefile manually and give the libraries as --rpath -Wl,<library_name> in LDFLAGS= which then compiles. Is there some way around this, like option to the configue ?. -- Thanks & Regards Anish N

I could install setserial later from the archives. the question is, which other alternative exists to configure the serial ports other than setserial. Ok, As I wrote some time ago, I am trying to connect two pcs via wifi. I can see the other card via iwlist device scan. Sify - Deja Vu ... port 143/993 - IMAP :/

Hi List, Apparently, somebody at Sify is having a lot of fun at customer's expense. So today sometime in the afternoon some nice admin or someone with admin rights decided - "OK, lets see what happens if I block 143 and 993. Should be fun, I am sure." Or probably the dude pressed the wrong next and "Are you sure? OK" button. Afaics, I can't telnet to port 143/993 on IMAP servers that I use. I am sure the servers are working because I know others are using it just fine and I even saw their telnet output. I have lodged a complaint with sify helpline - it took few hours to get through the executive. First hit - some dude in Vile Parle kept me on hold for few minutes. I cut the phone and called them again, this time the call was directed to Chennai ( even thought I selected "Technical query" ). The dude listened to me and suddenly popped the most important question ever - "Do see the network card?" . I pretty much went "Huh?". I explained to him that everything else is working - like surfing, chatting, emailing - yes those words they understand easily. I was promised that the techie dude will call me in an hour. I am waiting. In the meanwhile I called again and this time a girl spoke to me who ended the discussion with "Yes yes, I can see your complaint. We will call you as soon as it is solved. I would really appreciate, some users in Mumbai, if they could some how check if IMAP is working from their Sify accounts. I know that many people don't use IMAP so chances might just be low. ubuntu dapper doesn't work NEED HELP

[OT] Sify Port 22 blocked?

Hi, Does anybody notice that? Since last few hours, I am unable to ssh, svn+ssh to any servers I would like to. I am getting timeouts from each of the servers. I called the sify helpline, which now even has a "Press 2 for technical support". The dude asked me to click on the trayicon of sifybb thingie. When I told him that I am using Linux, he kept me on hold and had a conference, I think. Another dude spoke to me after that and asked me - if ssh was a program or something? After some more discussion I was promised that everything will be ok in next 1 hour. So I am waiting. I am wondering if somebody with sifybb in Mumbai/New Mumbai can check if port 22 is blocked or is it my figment of imagination? Thanks. Cheers! hi, i am trying to use krec to record sounds. Problem is that sometimes the mic works and at other times it doesnt. Last night it was working, I didnt switch off the machine, but in the morning it refused to work. It is an onboard card - headphones work all the time. kubuntu 7.04 and beryl

Hi all, I am running Feisty Kubuntu on a Toshiba A135-S2386 notebook. I am trying to setup Beryl on it. facing some problems... My graphics card is a ATI Radeon Xpress 200M on a T2080 ( 1.73GHz) Dual core. Is the machine good enough? Following the documentation, I installed ATI's fglrx driver. Accordingly, I think I should use Xgl and not AIGLX. For this I added the line: Option "AIGLX" "false" in the ServerLayout section of xorg.conf. Without this, launching beryl would simply stop saying that conpositing is disabled. I installed ATI's driver (restricted modules). glxinfo gives "Direct rendering : Yes" fglrxinfo output is: display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. coolest desktop ?

Hi, I came across this cool info when fiddling with my laptop for solving the hibernate problem -- Temperature info ! so ... # acpi -c -T -B Thermal 1: ok, 43.0 degrees C This with gnome-desktop. Heh, then it struck me, what if i check the temperature on every other desktop env and rate them according to their "coolness" ? KDE and XFCE turned out cooler than gnome, but m'be coz i hadn't enabled any additional features plugins etc etc. But then again if temp is high, would mean that a process is stressing the processor . Can this be a valid way than say top/profile to figure expensive wasteful cycles ? how cool is your tp / desktop ? whats your opinion on this ? regards, C

Hi all, 1)Compiz-Fusion on Ubuntu 7.04 I am using Compiz-Fusion on a Ubuntu 7.04,ATi Radeon XPress 200 series onboard using the proprietary fglrx drivers and Xgl.Though the startxgl script for starting Xgl automatically on boot had a workaround for missing shutdown and reboot buttons,I'm missing my Suspend(Hibernate?) button.Isthere a workaround for this? 2)HAL problems I am the sole user on Ubuntu 7.04 hence my userid has system administration privileges subject to root password.Since I don't have a printer,I disabled cups in System-->Administration-->Services.Also, I disabled Bluetooth support and the second cron service(non-anacron one) and a couple other services.Since then,whenever I login,I'm faced with a dialog box saying "Couldn't initialize HAL" and even after supplying root password,I'm unable to access selected system administration components which include Users and Groups,Services,Network,etc.A dialog box pops up with this: The configuration could not be loaded You are not allowed to access the system configuration. The interesting thing is that after I enabled GUI root login by editing the /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf file,even when I login as root,I'm unable to access the above-mentioned components.The above-mentioned dialog box pops up for root as well. :o Can someone help or point out a resource please? All, Thought of sharing a "thought" that triggered this email. A GNU/Linux distribution is usually tried and tested by individuals new to it and often want to know how to use it. The approach recommended by most, who have already used it, is by exploring documentation and adopting a "self-help" kind-of approach. There are particularly two articles that revolve around Push : Push users to use distributions defaming a particular brand and improving for inducing the migration. Pull: Give users the freedom to test and use it. Help them occasionally with their problems. The above two ideas are expressed in the following two articles 1. Hi people, I'm stuck at home due to the rains and so took up something I had been putting away. Ok here goes: Hardware: PC1 is connected to the net via cable modem attached to eth0 w/ IP aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd PC1 has a SMC wifi card running under ndiswrapper. Shows up as wlan0 auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet static address 192.168.1.202 netmask 255.255.0.0 gateway aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd PC2 has a ProNet wifi card. Atheros chipset. Shows up as ath0 auto ath0 iface ath0 inet static address 192.168.1.203 netmask 255.255.0.0 gateway aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd PC2 has no other connectivity. Both PCs are running Kubuntu Feisty. There is no firewall running on either machine while I am trying this stuff. Task 1 : to connect both PCs so that they can atleast ping each other. ....... Capital wasn't what the system required to operate. What it required to operate was proof of concept, and it could be scratched. Running code - something that began scratching the itch, however badly, and a community of people who wanted to see it through. So what GPL3 meant was, proof of concept + running code + presence of community. The concept had been proven already, by GPL2. That is, the substantive concept - we could make a set of rules for sharing that would make it possible to produce software all around the world that would be of ultimately high value, but could be offered to anyone free of charge - and provided with immense freedom to study, modify, and share. There was running code - we worked very hard for almost 2 years to produce a first discussion draft of GPL3, which we unveiled on January 18th of 2006 at MIT - and there was a community; many communities, in fact. But their convocation for the purpose of legislation was a unique event. Every other week for the past 18 months, we've convened a conference call of 21 of the largest IT Vendors in the world. Those companies, whose names are household familiar in every household and business familiar in every business. Working in teams that varied from one person from some of the companies, to five or six in others. Carefully studying every single word, commenting as though their lives depended upon it - as in some of the businesses they did. On every detail of the license's functioning in the global IT economy. We also convened, every other week, a conversation among 24 of the largest users of software in the world. Banks and brokerages, government agencies, and the lawyers who acquire software on their behalf. We consulted every single week with the leadership of large free software projects around the world, some of whom use GPL and some of whom only interact with GPLd code. We spoke to hackers of enormous influence in the community, influence they have gained by their skill in programming and by their willingness to share. By their selflessness in helping others learn, and by the extraordinary wit and intellect whereby they have produced miracles out of thin air for all of us to use for years. We conducted public meetings on every continent, save Antarctica. We negotiated ceaselessly with people over what they needed, what they wanted, what they doubted, what they feared, what their concerns were, and in the end - that's now I'm speaking of, this week, between now and Friday, the license gets itself finished and comes out the door as a final product - in the end, we got agreement. We got consensus. Those who predicted at the beginning of this process that it would dissolve into flame wars, or bad netiquette, or some screeching meltdown benefiting only the monopolists were wrong. I admit that there were days when I feared that they might be right - it was no cakewalk - but everyone who engages in legislation knows that it's never a cakewalk, and almost never pretty. What is interesting about the legislative experience we've just gone through is how little of it, however, had the ultimate ugliness of legislation as we know it in the public sphere. ............ Well they finally did it and a beta is out already - http://desktop.google.com A quick review - 1. Its fast and returns good results 2. Its still (beta) heavy ( 13 MB footprint in memory ) as compared to windows counterpart. 3. Its very responsive and easy to use. 4. The directories it searches by default is pretty good. 5. Extensible with other plugins. Am not sure how many plugins will work with the linux one. 6. Works with Ubuntu ( the favored one these days ) and rh/sles. 7. Bad bad thing - closed source. They should really find way to wrap their algorithms than closing off the entire app. Beagle with its mono bindings was a bit too slow for me ( i could hear my laptop hdd whir ). And trackerd with catfish was more than tricky to configure for any relevant results. So as of now google desktop wins the competion ( was there one ?) despite its flaws. whats your take on it ? regards, C

Kfind does not search symbolic link directories

Hi, I am not able to search Symbolic link directories with Kfind. Kfind is a file searching tool in KDE. It can be used stand alone or from within Konqueror under Tool > Find File. When queried for a file, the searching does not include symbolic link directory. I couldn't find a way to do so. There are many options to search for specific *types* of file (image, audio, device, link, etc.) , modification time, etc. but no option to tell kfind to look into symbolic link directories. Any ideas on what I am missing out ? With gnu's "find" command, there is an option " -L " which scans symbolic link directories too. How does one do it with Kfind ? I couldn't find much with google. Ubuntu 7.04 very good for Gigabyte 945 Motherboard

Hello All, Some days ago I had installed Kubuntu 7.04 on a Gigabyte 945 mobo machine and it had the problem of hanging on shutdown/reboot. So at the same place I loaded the Ubuntu 7.04 DVD that came with this month's Digit mag. and the results were very good. Shutdown as well as reboot was smooth. Video resolution was also excellent. Sound was impressive with the African jungle snare music. After installation I was missing the 'adept' package manager, so it was installed using 'sudo apt-get install adept'. A lot of dependent files were downloaded as it is a kde application. On starting it from the menu, it gave a warning that root previlages are required to make actually changes into the system. I could not locate the edit option for the menu item so a shortcut to main panel was created and that shortcut's properties were edited to add sudo before the adept-manager command. After that Adept ran smoothly. Multimedia setup was very easy. Whenever a media was loaded, the player automatically detected missing codecs and offered to download it. They got automatically downloaded and installed. Only VCD support was not available. Maybe VCDs are out of fashion in the West. DVDs and mp3s played fine. Even one out of two Mpg4 files in the same DVD could be played. The other one ( Charlie Chaplin ) simply forced the player to close every time. Gaim was setup for Yahoo and Google Talk. Google talk's setup was found from the web through a random google search. So those who are planning to buy new systems can go for this board with Ubuntu 7.04. Those who have not yet bought the Digit June issue can do so if they are interested in this bootable DVD distro. As a Kde fan and user, I am green with envy. :-D -- Regards, Rony. http://perfector.wordpress.com/ The Perfect Replacement For MP3 Digital music is probably the only kind of music everybody is listening to these days. The reason being that its smaller in size and thus makes it easy to share and store. Imagine downloading a 4 minute track thats approximately 40 Mb in size in a place where access to the internet is terrible and costs a bomb (thats usually the case in most places in the world). Thankfully, compression algorithms exists that can compress the same audio track to one-tenth its size, thus we do not have to imagine the above. Few weeks back I downloaded 2 albums, "My Dying Bride - A Line Of Deathless Kings" and "Slayer - Christ Illusion". The Slayer album was ripped at a very low bitrate and was not sounding too good. The album contained 14 tracks and obviously it was ripped at a lower bitrate to reduce its size. Many thanks to all the people who shared the album with me, but it was just not to my liking. There was no quality and I was furious because it took me a long time to download the album as not many people were sharing it. Boy, what a waste of time and a killer of expectation. Well thats what made me write this. Mp3 is an audio compression format that has taken the world by a storm. Mp3 is almost a synonym for music nowadays as Google is for search. Now, here comes the problem.. MP3 was good at one point in time, but not anymore. What's better? OGG VORBIS. AAC, Lame, MP3Pro neither of 'em match up to Ogg Vorbis' standards. Don't take my word for it, you can do simple tests to prove it. Take your favorite audio cd, select a track that you have heard a million times and don't mind listening to a hundred more and rip it to ogg vorbis as well as to mp3. Compare the mp3 and the ogg file to the track on the cd by listening, well now you know what I'm talking about. The ogg file is a much faithful reproduction of the cd than the mp3. An ogg file of 80kbps (bitrate) is equivalent to an mp3 encoded at 128kbps. Hey, there is still one more issue called "size". Ofcourse here again the ogg file beats the mp3 hollow. For the same size one can achieve a higher bitrate with ogg vorbis than with mp3. The best part ogg vorbis by default encodes in variable bitrate (which deliveres better quality than constant bitrate). Isn't this a great piece of information for any music lover? There are a more advantages in using ogg. Ogg is patent-free. Ok, we are just not bothered about patents here in India, but in this case we have to be because a lot of music that we listen to everyday is coming from outside India. Musicians who sell their songs in mp3 have to pay royalties. They could just save a bit more of cash by selling all over the world their songs in ogg vorbis. Not just does it benefit them but it also benefits listeners and fans. But do you think that they are seriously bothered? Music is become a business rather than an art form. Nobody cares about the quality of music their fans are listening to as long as they are minting big bucks and are being voted for the Grammy's. Portable players like ipod's also have to pay royalties but still are unwilling to support patent-free formats like ogg. Why? Because they too are doing well in selling their products. Neither the musician nor the manufacturers of players are bothered about the listener. As a guy on one of the mailing lists puts it "if only all the music in china was ripped into ogg vorbis", surely then a lot of players would be supporting it. There are a few portable players available that support ogg vorbis. Many of the game developers are using ogg vorbis and are very happy with the quality of sound and even happier because they are getting away without paying licenses. e.g. Doom 3. Ogg is only the container just like avi. It can contain several data streams at once, like video and the corresponding audio. Vorbis is the name of an open source audio compression format. There exists Theora for video compression and Speex for speech. I haven't really tried these though. If you notice I haven't mentioned anything about Windows Media Audio (wma) and Real Audio (ra), thats because I find these to be very cheap proprietary formats. I would never recommend these to any music lover. The best part about using ogg is that its open source. A lot of intense development will continue to take place to ensure that ogg vorbis remains the best. Its going to be literally impossible for any other proprietary format to beat ogg in the future. Almost all linux distributions play ogg out of the box. Things are looking bright for ogg, especially with all the Dell machines being sold with Ubuntu, we can expect a lot of vorbis encoded music from the US. Happy listening! Hi, I want to configure ppp to dial my isp(pacenet). For some reason I do not wish to use the rp-pppoe package. I think its possible to configure PPPoE using defualt pppd. I couldn't find a working /etc/ppp/ppp.conf. The error I am getting is "Attempting to reconnect".Even I have set mtu to 1492(as suggested on a freebsd). But I don't know what does mtu mean. Can someone point me the correct ppp configuration for use with cable net? Regards, Omkar.

The bios is buggy so sleep, hibernate don't work. Also the sound card does not work without a 1 line hack in the patch_realtek.c file Beryl worked after a fashion but kept crashing. I also had lot of trouble with window decorations vanishing so I left it alone. Will try it again when I upgrade to F7 soon. I used an IBM T series before this for a few years & that was MUCH better with linux. Also Toshiba is not very linux friendly company in terms of drivers & updates etc if you take a look at their updates site. Hi. I'm in the process of migrating apache from RH9 to FC5. Its a cgi-perl driven website. Also has ssl certs. Here is how I would go about it. 1. Copy the entire document root to the new box. 2. Copy /etc/conf directory to the new box. 3. Copy the ssl certs. Am I missing something? I know its simple, but like to have inputs from people who have done it. In a Democracy where information (knowledge) should flow freely and be accessible to all, this control of knowledge by the software giants is dangerous and unwanted. This is even more important for the Governments to ensure that third parties do not control their data. As the subject says is IE6.5 or higher w3c compliant and how compliant are other browsers in displaying a w3c compliant page. Basically there is a conflict going on at a potential client since one of the vendors wants that crap to run so that his app which is browser based can function. If the o/p of his app is w3c compliant FF / Konqueror / lynx should work properly and he shouldnt care what runs on a client. Since the vendor is a software giant and i will be kicking ass, i want to make sure. google throws up pages of irrelevant (almost) stuff. I am Debian Etch user. Last day onwards i am not able to login in KDE ( GUI ) with normal user. but console login was successful. I created new user but stilll not worked. I enabled ROOT login by editing /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc. Kubuntu 7.04 on Gigabyte 945 [Report]

Hello All, I installed Kubuntu 7.04 on a Gigabyte 945 motherboard system with Pentium DC 3 GHz. processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB SATA Seagate HDD and Samsung 17 " TFT monitor and Sony DVD writer. . First I tried the 64 bit live cd but it could not give resolution above 800x600. So the 32 bit version was tried and it gave a full toss 1280 x 1024 resolution. Sound was also up as I got the startup 'ding diding ding ding' sound. Network was up and running too in the ethernet card with triband service. I did not install full MMedia support as the client requires it only for internet. The Microsoft web cam was either not detected or I did not know how to view it as time was short. The only problem I got was that shut down or restart hangs just at the point of transition between on to off or back to on. I think the best option is let this thread take a breather,I will get a new Mandriva DVD from Mrugesh,install and then follow these steps...then if the problem reoccurs,I will report back again...... I am actually of the opinion that Mandriva has given me so many problems that I plan to shift to Ubuntu Fiesty and Fedora 7(64 bit)... :x Regards, Easwar

They are meant for people who cannot or do not wish to own their own computers. But the leaders of this state (especially the ones who live in Kalanagar) have decided that the free flow of information is not good for the ordinary people of this state. Their goons are vandalising cybercafes, and the police have sent out notices (not in Mumbai, but in Ulhasnagar and Dombivli, and in other towns in the state) asking cybercafes not to "show users the Orkut site". Needless to say, the press has been largely silent about this state of affairs. I also see little discussion of it in lists relating to IT in India. setting up nrc-foss node in mumbai

hi, as you may know VJTI has offered a lab of 30 machines for use of the community. We are going over there on sunday to start setting up the machines and chalk out programs. The lab will be available for all lug type activities. Our first challenge is to set up the lab as a state of art thingie that showcases the best of FOSS. And then to bring crowds in to see, use, learn and enjoy. Hi Guys, I have been using Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 for about an year now on my IBM R50e laptop with Evolution as the mail client. Our office uses MS Exchange. Recently bought a new Imate JasJam with WM5 O/S. I want to sync the contacts and calender of my evolution with the WM5. [OT] Issues using xemacs as a lisp IDE

Hi all, I tried to use xemacs as a lisp ide using slime. i referred to slime and xemacs' inbuilt info documentation but still haven't succeeded in configuring it properly. Since this topic may not be of interest to all, I am putting in a description of my efforts so far in an attachment so that it can be ignored (instead of being flamed) more conveniently.
