unknown sender with amavis.

I have configured amavis and postfix. But in the virus mails it is ripping off the sender name. it gives VIRUS (Worm.Bagle.Gen-zippwd,Worm.Bagle.Gen-zippwd) IN MAIL TO YOU (from <?(a)mailhost.tifr.res.in>). Can anybody give me any clue to get the name sender as well. postfix version 2.1.4-5 amavisd-new version 20030616p10-5 clamav-daemon version 0.80-7 Here is the sample mail. MTNL Mumbai and Gmail

Hi, Some people may recall that I had posted the problem of Gmail not working with thunderbird on this list. It turns out that the problem is neither Gmail nor thunderbird. It's MTNL!! Usually, whenever I used to ping some site, output was something like: ############################################ [/home/soumen] $ ping yahoo.com PING yahoo.com (66.94.234.13) 56(84) bytes of data. On a hunch, I re-configured my Gmail account & it perfectly worked!! Today it's again back to "Packet filtered" & Gmail again is not working :( Is my assumption right that my MTNL dialup is to be blamed? If so, what I can do to get this fixed? I mean is it possible to actually explain this to somebody in MTNL & get results? What I am confused about is : if I have a requirement of 8 different OSes for different types of development work, what good is a single machine to me ? I have 8 people working on 8 different modules. So a single machine ain't gonna suffice. The best solution is to have one high-end Server and maybe other diskless nodes. If yours can boot from a non fat16 partition then u have no problems. Install the regular way. Copy your kernel image to the fat16 partition "cp /vmlinuz /mnt". Reboot. Alternately you may use loadlin from a dos partition, or install lilo or grub on the regular harddrive with an entry to boot from the usb disk. rgds jtd

USB HDD / Laptop Installation problem.

I'll be getting a freecom 160 GB 3.5" USB hard disk drive on which i have to install redhat linux 9 which, when needed , is connected to my Toshiba Satellite Laptop. I wont be connecting my external HDD all the time to my Laptop and i want to install linux in the USB drive. So how do i go about doing it. It should be like plug n play, when needed connect to the Laptop and boot into linux . Wot about device drivers ? Will the installation process be any different than the normal installation process? I have to do the installation on monday as i'll be gettin the USB drive by then. Thx

He has to start from scratch and give an entirely new definition to music. Unimaginable, isn't it? Now replace 'music' with 'software' and this is what the Indian government is seeking to do. Or so some critics argue. The amendments to the Indian Patent Act introduced by a recent Ordinance will allow all computer programmes to be patented. The Indian Patent Act, as modified in 2002, had made "a mathematical method or a business method or a computer programme per se or algorithms" non-patentable. However, the recent amendment changes this phrase defining what cannot be patented to "a computer programme per se other than its technical application to industry or a combination with hardware, a mathematical or business method or algorithms." Since any commercial software has some industry application and these applications are technical in nature, it opens virtually all software to patenting, say the critics of the move. As a booming software nation, can India afford to take such a step without harming interests of the industry? These were concerns expressed at a press conference organised by the Delhi Science Forum on Tuesday. The US and Japan, they said, are two countries that have provided for patent protection in software, which has adversely impacted smaller developers. European Parliament has been forced to defer software patenting in the wake of widespread opposition to such a move. A patent in the case of software grants monopoly control over not just the 'expression' of a function or idea in computer code, which could be covered by copyright, but over the very idea itself. Thus, software would be covered by both copyright and patents, perhaps the only instance of a product being underpinned by both. Richard Stallman, co-developer of the GNU-Linux operating system and proponent of free software says, "Since software patents cover software ideas, it makes them a dangerous obstacle to all software development." An example is Amazon's singleclick agreement. Amazon.com was granted a patent on a system that remembers customer credit card data from visit to visit, so that customers could, on all visits after their first, simply order products and then click once to buy them using a stored credit card number. After two rounds of litigation, this patent was upheld and Amazon was able to prevent its chief competitor, barnesandnoble.com, from using a similar system. The main argument against software patenting is that it will kill innovations, by leaving small firms or software developers liable for patent infringements. "That's like saying, be the greatest genius in history or don't even try", said Stallman. Date Output Setting in Postgres

Hi, I am having problem setting the "Date" output settings. I am using Postgres 7.4.3. I have changed the datestyle setting in "postgresql.conf" as, datestyle = 'SQL, DMY' But still when I do a show all, I get DateStyle ISO, DMY Why is it stuck with "ISO", instead of "SQL". The reason I want "SQL" is that I want the date output format as dd/mm/yyyy instead of yyyy/mm/dd when I browse the records. Another problem was that I could not set the datestyle with the SET command. So, I modified the postgresql.conf file. But still the problem is only partially solved as the datestyle still remains "ISO", instead of "SQL". I am using phpPgAdmin as frontend. Thanks, Rajen.

KDM theme for KDE-3.4

Hi, I just downloaded and installed KDE-3.4b1 on my SUSE 9.0 box. Now there is this really nice KDM theme for v3.4 which I wanted to install as my default theme (from www.kde-look.org ). I downloaded the theme and when I configured the kdmrc file it still did not work...I did the following changes to the file $KDEDIR/share/config/kdm/kdmrc (where Tux-Mania is the new theme) Theme=/opt/kde3.4/share/apps/kdm/themes/Tux-Mania UseTheme=true But still when I rebooted it brought me back to the same plain vanilla login screen. Dear Friends, The discussions on the use of 2 OSs in one machine and the question by Saswata about its uses got me thinking and I have visualised a concept. What is being done is simply multi-tasking. Any OS is a set of tasks that the cpu is carrying out and 2 OSs means the resources are shared by two sets of tasks (OSs). This jugglery is carried out by the RAM which loads two seperate OSs in its space and uses the necessary swap space on the HDD for extra resources. The Concept:- Generally in an office setup, a normal Pentium 400 MHz system with 256 MB RAM, 100 MHz bus and a 10 GB HDD is sufficient for doing letter writing, data entry, email, surfing, printing etc. Suppose an office needs to use 8 computers for 8 operators, with different OSes for different software or even same OSes, 8 computer systems will need to be purchased. 8 computer systems will have to be taken for AMCs ( Yeah ! ). Instead of that if all the hardware requirements are bundled up into one system then that would bring down costs. The CPU will be 400 MHz X 8 = 3.2 GHz. The RAM 256 MB X 8 = 2 GB. The BUS speed 100 MHz X 8 = 800 MHZ. The HDD 10 GB X 8 = 80 GB Thats what the latest systems can give you. The motherboard will have to be special type that accomodates atleast 8 PCI slots that will contain low cost multifunction cards that have VGA, PS2 Keyboard and PS2 Mouse outputs and for more elaborate ( $$$ ) ones, a LAN and 56 Kbps modem with it too. This provides capacity to run 8 Monitors, Keyboards and Mice for 8 operators. The BIOS will be more advanced with a facility to create 8 RAM partitions with each partition getting a quota of max 400 MHz of CPU speed and 100 MHz. of BUS speed. This prevents viruses or runaway programs from one OS upsetting the whole system. When installing any OS, it will ask which RAM partition is to be utilised, just as we select HDD partitions. In this way we can get upto 8 different (or even same) OSes running simultaneously in one system. It is an ideal option where a heterogeneous envirinment is necessary. This will not only save initial costs tremendously but it will also save on AMCs ( Ouch! ) as the total number of machines is only one instead of 8. Since the hardware resources are common, a LAN will not be required to make the 8 computers see each other within the same system. If we can have systems with 2 CPUs and dual busses, then upto 16 computers can be created from one system with the 400 MHz combination. Imagine the savings for companies that use 50 or 100 computers or more. Even the space required will reduce. With wireless technologies becoming cheaper, the monitors, mice and keyboards can be wireless to avoid clutter and increase distance from the main system. Regards, Rony.

Its quite simple really : A RT Kernel (the microkernel) runs, the vanilla Linux kernel as an idle process. Thus, only non-rt tasks are marked as "pending" and whenever there are no rt tasks running, Linux is woken up and it can perform the "pending" tasks. hi friends, i am trying a dual boot between redhat 9 and windows 98. i have a 80 gb harddrive. i partioned 40 gb of it and have left the balance un partioned. i installed windows which has 2 drives c and d. now when i was installing Redhat 9 the automatic partioning did not work. Hi all Well abt the Swap space I have a system with 512 RAM so does that mean that I need around a GB of swap space???? Well swap space is used to swap out the processes when there is less memory available so If u have enough memory there is no need of a swap space at all. I tested this out with many processes running and found that the swap space utilization was 0 and only my memory was being utilized. So its "recommended" for better performance to have a swap space of twice the amount of RAM iff u have less RAM(< 256 RAM and u r using X and all the heavy stuff). Although u can allocate a swap space of the same amt of RAM or less. In case while using the system u find that the system is running low on memory then u can create a swap file and use it temorarily as the swap space..NO NEED TO CREATE A SWAP PARTITION. fedora core cd not working

hi, i recently purchase red hat fedora core bible. i got fedora cd with it. however when i tried to install fedora it started the installation, formatted my drive and started copying the packages. however it terminated half way stating some fatal error about bad media and stopped the installation. i thought the cd was bad and replaced the book and cd. however i got the same problem with the other cd. can anyone tell what the problem is? regards, kevin

After doing this any file created in the folder will have the group ownership of the desired group so that all the group members can have proper access to the folder once they login with their respective usernames and passwd's. I have redhat 9 running on my PC and i just finished installing suse 9.1 . After installing suse , there is no entry of my redhat 9 in the bootloader whereas my windows partition is detected perfectly. i want my bootloader to be of redhat and there sud be and entry of suse in it. how do i go about doin it ? i hav installed both of dem in different partitions on the same drive.

cdwriters: k3b: kernel 2.6.8+

Hi This is just for info. There is a problem with kernel s 2.6.8+ and k3b where it cannot detect most writers properly and hence shows up as a normal drive instead of a writer under k3b. This is a kernel issue as claimed by the k3b team. solution: kernel 2.6.7 or lower (i personally have shifted to 2.4.27 b/c i find 2.6.8 & .10 rather unstable with my snd-card & ide times out too often ) or do not use k3b. so before giving up on ur writer, please try one of the above. It might not be a writer problem. It is still not clear how many writers (or if all) are affected, but it seems to be fairly wide spread. BTW: anybody using kernel 2.6.8+ with k3b ?? which writer / kernel rgds Erle

Only click on Upgrade instead of a full install and the system detects the pacenet internet connection. So will some other big names, include MySQL founder David Axmark. This year's event will focus on localisation projects, PHP5, Python, MySQL and more. There's an awareness-building exercise for school students and teachers on the first day of the event (Feb 13, 2005) followed by an installfest and more. Organisers announced today (February 7, 2005) that they were to have Apache co-founder Brian Behlendorf taking part in the event. (Apache HTTP Server is an open source HTTP web server for Unix platforms -- BSD, Linux, and UNIX systems -- and Microsoft Windows, and other platforms. Apache features highly configurable error messages, DBMS-based authentication databases, and content negotiation, it is also supported by several GUIs which permit easier, more intuitive configuration of the server. Samsung printer problem

I have a Samsung printer (ML-1520) on a Fedora 3 system. It was autodetected as a ML-1510 and was working fine until I made the mistake of installing Samsung's own drivers. The printer no more works under Linux (it's fine under Win). Worse, I am unable to run printconf or printconf-gui to rectify matters. Uninstalling the Samsung software hasn't helped. JNI and glibc doubt

Hi All, I am trying to do a "HelloWorld" program using JNI. The command "java HelloWorld" gives me: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /tmp/java_native/libhello.so: /tmp/java_native/libhello.so: only ET_DYN and ET_EXEC can be loaded Relevant (.c .h and .java) files are attached. The stack trace and commands are in stack.txt. I am thinking of purchasing the HP LaserJet 1010 for home use. Does this printer work well with Linux? The evidence from Google is mixed: linuxprinting.org goes as far as to say this is a "Windows only" printer and is "not recommended" under Linux. Hello, You may contact my vendor Absolute (Contact no: 26845600). I would recommend you to go for parts of which services are readily available. I had a very bad experience of motherboard (ASUS - A7S 266 VM) going faulty within 6 months of purchase. Since it was in warranty period I got service from my vendor without much trouble but it took in all "a complete month" to get it repaired. I was told that Tech Pacific (now Ingram Micro) are the sole service provider for AMD based systems and they take minimum one month to provide service. I don't know if vendor lied to me. But for whatever reasons, I was deprived of my system for one month because of delay in service. So I recommend you look for vendor's reputation and quality of service by agencies responsible for any brand you opt for before you fix on one. As for the reliability part I have no suggestion about any brand. I have seen both brands AMD and Intel based systems developing problems over time. Regards Peeyush

The reason: HP will disclose hardware details under a very onerous NDA, which no sane person will sign let alone a FOSS developer. Cases in point winmodems, several canon and hp printers, flash disks, graphic display cards etc. However there have been a few cases that are the opposite, where the gnu.linux version is vastly superior eg. epson printers using gimp drivers. hi all, i would like to switch to linux from windows. but i feel nervous as i have never installed linux for regular usage like playing games, surfing the internet, etc. a constant fear lurks in the mind what if it does not detect my hardware, how do i configure it for cable internet considering that my cable internet provider may not know how to install internet on any other os other than windows. please can someone clear some of my doubts and give me guidance. thanks and regards, kevin

Hi I have been using Linux for the past 4 years (started out in mid 2000). My family members identify me as a linux Fanatic.After all these years they are used to names like Slackware/Red Hat/Ubuntu. My son who is 1.5 years old can already identify the logo of Red Hat.( I had casually mentioned this name along with other logos like pepsi,intel,ibm) and also likes the tux picture in magazines. I do not get much time to log on to my Pc other than office but the last time I started and ran windows was 6 months back. It is addictive!!!!!!! Ninad Bapat

It's not the dumb questions, it's the lack of effort in using easily and readily available information first. It's a lot easier to google than post and wait and then read ten mails abt the solution. And u will notice that inspite of a less than flowery reception to such mails there is very rarely a personal attack on anyone. So imnho silence is very bad. Be happy that posters without netiquette are not booted out for consuming bandwidth, disk space, and other peoples' time. And posting to a mailing list is like singing in a bus. Apart from whatever the base installation does for you, if you need something specific, there's a good chance that you'll need to know quite a bit of command line stuff to get it to work. This is what the base camp refers to as the Unix philosophy (lots of dedicated command line tools that can work magic if combined by the right hands).. but as you have experienced this is the downside.

Not that I run a cybercafe or am least interested in running one - but I did think that in a group of people who have an interest in FLOSS there would be some (aside from those who burnt their fingers trying this once before) who would see the value of promoting FLOSSOSes (I love making curious looking acronyms) in different environments. I have noticed that telco engineers are often completely clueless about personal computing. My direct experience is Reliance, Tata Indicom and MTNL. None knew that there were alternatives to Windows, and that many users of such existed in Mumbai city at least. It took a while for Reliance to create a download for a GNU/Linux compatible dialer for their CDMA fixed wireless service. I don't know if it also works on the Tata service. Dear luggers, I have SuSe-9.1 installed on my machine. I am getting problem in starting X server. I am getting following lines(errors) while running #startx (EE) open /dev/fb0: No such device Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list! Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list! How to troubleshoot this problem. I have commented the fontpath in /etc/X11/XF86Config in files section but didn't worked. Red Hat has chkfontconfig to add and remove fontpath . How to set font path in SuSe ??? While this is happening My Xfce is working properly. I guess it must be font server (xfs) problem. what could be the problem and so does the solution ???? Thanks in advance. -Sachin

Dear rony, Apart from normal sectors of harddisk MBR is Very less written sector of the Disk, Imagine the number of time the normal data sectors get written and overwritten when U copy, move or delete data I don't think it ( MBR ) will get damaged or so... If U have experienced such a thing in past it might be that the harddisk is faulty and not be due to too many flavors of OS installed So go ahead install as many flavours as U like and Ur Hard Disk space support !! Dear Friends, I am looking for a GUI mp3 player for linux. I asked Mr. Google but he is giving me text based, command line or console based players. I even downloaded one package called zinf-2.2.5 but it has a long compilation required. There are a lot of bits and pieces available on the net like tools, plugins etc. I am looking for one which is fully self equipped, that comes with an 'install' shell script file that will install it into my selected directory and will give me a simple 'player_name' script to double click and run ( just as we simply install and run mozilla firefox or thunderbird ). hi, just installed FreeBSD 5.3 working fine. what i learned from the doc is that in order to make the sound card working you have to re-compile the kernel (or am i missing something?) but i have also tried the FreeSBIE 1.1 a live cd based on freebsd which automatically detects sound card, i am just trying to find which script in that cd does so. any ideas? -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content, and is believed to be clean.

Streaming Real Audio

Hi! The only reason I boot to windows is to listen to online streaming music from sites like http://raaga.com, http://smashits.com or http://indiahits.com They require Real Player, which I have on Windows and all works fine. But I want to avoid using Windows and listen to this music on Linux. I installed Realplayer 10 on my RH9 and FC1 boxes, and also installed the Mozilla plugin which comes with the package. But I am simply not able to listen to music from these sites. I came to the conclusion that these sites were designed for the Windows version of RealPlayer only, since they play songs in a window that has RealPLayer _embedded_ into them, as opposed to playing songs in standalone ReaPlayer. Sites which use standalone players (like http://www.shoutcast.com/) work great on Linux. Can I somehow play music from the above mentioned sites on Linux? PPPOE under Debian Woody

Hi All I have installed Debian Woody 3.0r4 and I am having problem configuring PPPOE, I am dual booting and I am able to use pppoe under Red Hat 9. Can anybody point me to some good link for configuration of pppoe, yes I have checked google. I referred various docs and tried various options but still no luck. Infact I had done same exercise earlier (around 6 months back) but was never successful. Is anybody through with the configuration of pppoe under Debian Woody (Mumbai)? hi, i compiled a 2.6.9 kernel. its working fine except that its giving me some errors while booting and not logging kernel printk messages onto /var/log/messages. The kernel was compiled with debugging support and frame pointers. Many of the configurations options were changed ( i can send you the /usr/src/linux-2.6.9/.config file if required ). I am using FC3 on a P4 and the default 2.6.9-1.677 kernel is working without any logging errors. I have tried $ echo '7' > /proc/sys/kernel/printk but no use. What is the reason for the problem ? Is it because of some configurations options ( i think that is most likely ). i want my linux to act as windows when it is not shut properly usually when linux get bad shut it wait for admin to hit y to start fsck otherwise it will skip i want linux to start fsck as default and should prompt for cancling fsck (as good as windows) (totaly reverse to default linux fsck when bad shut off) making change in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit i have made linux to scan as default but it is not asking to skip fsck i made a change in line 228 default line is if [ "$AUTOFSCK_DEF_CHECK" = "YES" ]; then changed line is if [ "$AUTOFSCK_DEF_CHECK" = "" ]; then this change helped me to scan my linux when get bad shutoff even if i dont press any key it scans my hard drive and even when i press y or n

Forgive my ignorance here... I really don't think it's an ISA Card. But I'm not a h/w wiz. What is the diff... please enlighten so that I don't ask this again. Anyways, It goes into a PCI slot I think. Also no spurious interrupts, the c file won't build. I don't have the o/p right now.. I'll mail it tomm if reqd Methinks it's not in the right place ... missing headers or something the driver file mentioned that the files should be copied to /usr/src/linux in 6.x I don't find such a dir on my m/c. Need help with activating a network card in RHL 8.0

My installation detects the card as REaltek.... but won't activate it on startup or via the Network applet I have a disk which came along with the card which contains a .c file which seems to be the driver for 6.X . the installation procedure seems to ask me to build the .c file (I have never seen something like this in Win..) Anyways I did that and apart from a whole lot of error messages.. no new developments. There's a make file which also does the same thing.. Hello Gnu/Linux Users, I wanted to say that when we say ILUG in ILUG-BOM, aren't we ignoring "GNU" ? I think so because, it's "GNU/Linux", not the Linux kernel alone that we support. So ILUG should be more appropriately called IGLUG. And so, ILUG-BOM should be IGLUG-BOM. I maybe wrong on this since I may not know the reason for this. hi, in a cybercafe setup i have a mandrake server connected to dsl and squid and dhcp. The other machines are a variety of windoze stuff. I would like the facillity of enabling/disabling internet access for specific machines from the server. If i give each windoze machine a specific ip address, this can be done. Hi, I am using Fedora Core 2 w/ muttprint 0.72a-1 from http://muttprint.sourceforge.net/ I am getting the following error message : Can't call method "convert" on an undefined value at /usr/bin/muttprint line 1866. with muttprint 0.72c-1 also I get the same error, only, the error comes at line 1914. the program convert from imagemagic is already installed on my machine. The offending line in both is the same: return $utf2native->convert($string); could you please help me ? I checked the faq but this is not mentioned there. hi all, I have installed redhat Enterprise linux 3.0 and Oracle 9.2.0.4 on a server.2 databases have been created on the same server. while connecting to these databases through an OS authenticated user thru Oracle it connects to an idle instance.prior installations with the same configurations have no problem.we are using exactly the same (as those for the working ones)bash_profile and enviornment variables for this as well. Following is the message on the server----------- Under ideal condition : sqlplus "sys as sysdba" SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production on Tue Jan 18 17:42:18 2005 Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation.
