GetMail Problem

Hi I am facing a problem with Getmail 3.1.2 on RedHat 8.0 using python 2.2.1 When I run getmail to collect mail from my ISPs catchall account it says it is collecting mail for 1 of n gives an configuration error "No matching header field". I tried all "envelope_recipient" options provided as well as "use_*env" but still no luck. Can anybody guide me. Lured by its low cost, I replaced Windows 98 on my computer with Linux. Unfortunately the more I use it the more I fear that this "Linux" may be an insidious way for the Dark One to gain a stronger foothold here on Earth. I know this may be a shocking claim, but I have evidence to back it up! To begin with, Linux runs numerous background processes. These processes are usettlingly termed "demons." Furthermore in order to start or stop these "demons" a user must execute a command called "finger". By "fingering" a "demon" one excercises an unholy power, much the same way that the Lord of Flies controls his black minions. Also consider some of these other Linux commands: "sleep", "mount", "unzip", "strip" and "touch". All highly suggestive in a sexual nature. I know that our Lord cannot approve of these, and I urge them to be renamed to something appropriate to the Christian community. Third, Linux uses a flavor of DOS known as Bash. Bash is an acronym for "Bourne Again Shell". On the surface this would appear to be supportive of the Lord. However, remember that even Satan can quote the bible for his own purposes! While I believe Linux may be born-again, its obvious by the misspelling of "born" that its not born-again in an Christian church. Will the lies ever cease? Additionally, one of the main people involved with the GNU Free Software Foundation supports contraception and abortion. His web site even advocates government support of contraception. He also wears fake halos, and has quips about his made-up church that relates to his free software. I find such blasphemy to be extremely unsettling. One must also remember that the creator of Linux, a college student named Linux Torvaldis, comes from Finland. I'm sure all the followers of Christ are aware of the heritical nature of the Finnish: from necrophilia to human sacrifice, Finnish culture is awash in sin. I find little reason to believe anything good and holy could arise from this evil land. Finally, let us remember that there is an alternative to using the Satan-powered Linux. I think history has shown us that Microsoft is quite holy. I'm told that its founder, William Gates is a strong supporter of our Lord and I encourage my fellow Christians to buy only his products to help keep the Devil at bay. sir I recently installed linux 8.0 But facing some problems: 1. Unable to detect modem 2. Unable to access data of windows from linux and vice-versa 3. Where to do programming unable to find editor etc. 4. where are files of linux source code stored as it as open source software 5. Linux automatically boots after 7 seconds. Wine error

Hi.... I'm running debian v. 3.0. I mounted local W98 partition. I installed wine from LFY CD. It serched the Windows directory and configured the wine. But I'm getting error... libntdll.dll.so not found or not a file or a directory...., where as ntdll.dll.so is softlinked as libntdll.dll.so and it is in valid path... what could be the reason...? Hi I am looking to buy a notebook(my first one) and am sort of confused. The sort of specs I am looking at are (for a minimum): 1. 1.7 GHz Celeron 2. 256M RAM(expandable to quite a lot) 3. Some sort of 4x agp 4. 30G hdd 5. Internal combo cd/dvd/writer 6. Should be decently compatible with *nix...I will be on a LAN, so modem support is not really important, though it would be a plus if it were supported. My budget would be something around $1200... Can listers suggest a few models/makes that have decent support in India? and any other points that i need to be aware of before buying?

hi-- The Dell Inspiron and Toshiba Satellite (which I own) are good buys for that price.I dont know about the availability of both those though back in India.Dell sells laptops here in the US only thru their website. they have good support for Linux.I have Mdk 9.0 running on my Toshiba Satellite 1400-S105 (1.2GHz celeron,256 megs ram, 30gb hdd, Intel EEpro ethernet card,CyberAlladin-T video accelerator card).The internal modem doesnt work on Linux.but i have no issues otherwise. also you might want to think about the Apple I-book, the entry level ones are sub 1000$.how about installing Linux PPC? regards -Nikhil >I am looking to buy a notebook(my first one) and am sort of confused. Problem installing Redhat 9 on AMD Athlon XP 2200+

I am trying to install Redhat 9 on ASUS (A7N266-VM) Motherboard having AMD XP 2200+ (1.8Ghz) processor. After installation the system freezes on: "Finding module dependencies:" I dont know how to go about getting my Redhat 9 to work. Its a dual boot with Windows. I am using LILO as my Boot-Loader. My keyboard locks up as well as I can't do Ctrl + C at that point. Is there some specific kernel parameter required for AMD Systems? Or is there any other linux distro which would work on this system. TIA. Rupessh

Implement procmail filtering. Sendmail plays the part of the mail delivery agent, and for a single mail account, procmail filtering suits better. For mails from all other domains, you may just want to delete them, instead of sending a bounce message. Hi! I've observed that somehow people advocating Linux bring morality into picture. They argue about illegal (pirated) Windows and how bad it is (morally) to use one. Here is a checklist for all those paranoid about having their PC legal: (Please add to this list something that I might have missed ) 1. Is your PC or some part of it ( RAM,HDD,graphics card ) bought from grey market ? If yes you can safely assume that it is illegal. The required taxes have been evaded. 2. Do you have Mp3z on your Hard-Disk? Linux or Windows , they are completely illegal ( Why are you making MP3z if you own the CD ? If for giving it to friends then thats illegal too !). Its illegal even if you have burnt them on your CD instead of keeping them on your HDD 3. Do you have DivX/MPEG files of latest movies ? It is illegal. 4. Does your homepage/HDD have gif's. Arguably they are illegal too. (Some compression patent problems I believe) Here's my PC's status: 1. Bought from grey market. I lose the battle in first step itself ;) 2. Yep not a single mp3 on my HDD. 3. not a single MPEG/DivX 4. Dont have a homepage so no gif's created by me that are on the HDD My point: Windows user is on equal moral grounds (regarding legality of his/her PC) if a Linux user satisfies any of the criteria. There cannot be something less illegal. Either it is legal or it is not. P.S. (While I may be sounding Windows advocate let me tell you that I have only two OS'es on my PC : Linux and Dos (the command.com from the rescue disk of Windows 98, which is licensed, but not mine. I guess that's legal too as Microsoft, I guess, does not say that you must possess a legal copy of Windows 98 to use the command.com , Anywayz I use command interpreter of FreeDos) Nikhil

Although all channels are clearly 'visible' ..the sound is all messed up ...the audio is hardly audible....tried changing all tuner types in the xawtv config file...but no change..... H-E-L-P .!

Unusual Problem using Java Plugin with Mozilla

Hi all, I have installed JRE 1.4.0 downloaded from Sun Microsystems. I am trying to run a java applet in Mozilla, but I am facing an unusual problem. When I am running mozilla as a normal user, it crashes if I try to load the java applet. But if I run mozilla as root, then the java applet is correctly loaded and runs smoothly. I can't figure out the problem. I read the java installation docs and the setup seems to be perfectly allright. I have also checked out mozilla.org. But my problem is a bit different, since the applet is running if I run mozilla as root, but not otherwise. Any pointers ? I am using Red Hat Linux 8.0. (Full Installation - i.e. installed all the packages), and Mozilla 1.0.1. Regards, Rajen. P.S. 1 : I still haven't found a solution for being able to use all the fonts (True Type) installed on the system, while using some gtk+ applications. Eg. Abiword, Gnumeric, Gedit, etc. I had posted a mail earlier in this regard. Still awaiting for some feedback. P.S. 2: For Pine users moving towards GUI, I recommend Open Webmail (a Web based Email Client). Has most (not all) of the features of Pine. Additionally has facility for accessing POP3 mails. What I miss most is the keystrokes of Pine. With Mozilla, I have yet to get used to finding the right keys. Hello, We ( students Fr. CRCE, final year, BE electronics ) are doing a project for developing a system similar to the ones used in robosoccer. (http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~robosoccer/) NO one we know of has implemented the whole robosoccer system yet, in India. One of the major aspects of this involves using real-time image processing for finding out the locations of robots and the ball in the game. We have developed most of the stuff using IntelOpenCV computer vision library and using personal USB webcams, however we are not able to get the required performance with these cameras.. *the frame rate is really slow ( average 2 fps ) *the image quality is also bad we are wondering if anyone can lend us any frame grabber cards which have linux drivers, for a couple of weeks, so that we can really test the efficiency of our routines and stuff like that. we can use both the routines and the webcam under windows, but then really we will be missing the point of doing a project like this ! any pointers are appreciated ! Just as all Muslims are not terrorists (it's a real, real shame we have to explain this to some over-patriotic jerk in the US), all hackers are not social outlaws who break into systems to steal private data or cripple the system. A good hacker is capable of such stuff, and some hackers do, but the vast majority don't! Kevin Mitnick *might* be a hacker--I don't know, I don't care. Even if he is a hacker, he's also a guy, white, American, etc. and his name begins with 'K'. Is it fair to say that all white American guys whose names begin with 'K' are criminals? A hacker is only as likely to be a lawbreaker as, say, a carpenter, doctor, sportsperson, soldier, musician, lawyer (yes!) or even policeman. Hi all, There was this link I followed from slashdot. It's a Computer Weekly article which documents Novell calling Linux as an immature OS. In case you're wondering, "Who will make it mature and industrial strength?" -- Novell will! "Doc-Shop" is a shorthand term for "documentation workshop". In a Doc-Shop, undergraduate students will discuss acts of documentation as a creative and critical exercise, and simultaneously gain hands-on experience with various old and new media technologies. WHY DOCUMENTATION? Today all of us deal with information in great abundance. The Internet is a huge archive of information with massive streams of ideas, discussions and stories flowing through its networks. This makes special demands on us as creative and critical people. Any creative and critical engagement today means also learning to deal with such enormous archives, and understanding how they are made. Participating in a Doc-Shop is one such form of engagement. Doc-Shops help us to develop our conceptual skills and make sense of archives shaped through new media and digital technologies. They equip us to document the world on our own terms. The world around us is mediated by new technologies that shape our perceptions acutely. Yet most of us do not have access to these technologies, nor are we encouraged to shape the mediated reality around us. PUKAR views documentation not simply as a passive act of recording reality, but an active, creative process that allows us to participate in the construction of reality around us. PUKAR MONSOON DOC-SHOP in MAY 2003 Between 19 and 23 May 2003, PUKAR shall be conducting the Doc-Shop, as part of PUKAR Monsoon 2003. The Doc-Shop will be a week-long series of workshops that encourage hands-on learning of technical skills and equipment, and foster a critical and intellectual engagement with the terms and practices of documentation. The Doc-Shop will be facilitated by a group of resource persons: artists, media producers, documentalists and activists. The PUKAR Monsoon 2003 theme, "On Cities, On Water" will be the main content of the Doc-Shop. The Doc-Shop is open to all undergraduate students in Mumbai, and will be held for about 20 students. The Doc-Shop will culminate in the production of a small archive of images and words and other productions which can be used in further phases of the PUKAR Monsoon 2003 from June to August 2003 (see below). Each day will consist of a morning "reading-cum-discussion" session. These will be followed by afternoon "practicals" that will enable the hands-on use of different technologies. After five days, we hope that small groups of students will form who work on specific projects -- a short video, photo-essay, radio or sound story, a piece of fiction or an essay, or any other creative form -- on the PUKAR Monsoon theme of "On Cities, On Water" (see below). The small documentary projects will be exhibited publicly in the week following the Doc-Shop, and will form the basis of future events with local and international audiences in the PUKAR Monsoon 2003. DAY 1: The Moving Image Documentary films have a complex story of relating to the modern world, and we begin our Doc-Shop by reflecting on this story. Does the movie camera capture reality as a given? Or does it shape it through the selective eye of the movie-maker? What sense do we make of the huge archive of documentaries that exist today, and how do we evaluate their contribution to our understanding of the contemporary world? Handling a digital video camera and making some samples of moving images will be an important part of the session. DAY 2: The Photograph The still photograph has its own language and potency to shape our world and photographic images reach out to us through posters, advertisements and personal photo-albums. How do they shape our relationship to knowledge, with their particular method of recording reality? How does digital technology change the story of the photograph? The use of digital cameras and actually taking photographs will enhance reflection on these issues. DAY 3: Sound-Scapes Radio and the Internet have transformed the experience of "hearing" into a specialised zone that makes sound an autonomous space to act upon, for all those interested in documentation. How does one relate to audio archives today? How do audio records produce their own version of visual culture? Learning the nuances of sound archives through digital audio recording technologies and producing audio stories will complete this session. DAY 4: Words and Writing Words and texts remain crucial components of documenting reality. A script for a film, or a caption for a photograph, is vital to structure even visual forms of archiving. How do we relate to words and writing as old and new modes of documentation? How do we use words creatively to innovate on classificatory systems and taxonomies? How do we simply become better writers and therefore better archivists, even when using new visual media? Creative writing and "naming" exercises will form part of these reflections. DAY 5: Web Art Visual and performing art forms can be seen as the most sophisticated modes of documenting the complexities and nuances of lived experience. That is why we understand the richness of past and the present by relating to all kinds of art forms. However, digital technologies have transformed many art practices in all kinds of ways. We focus on the newly emergent form of "web art" as a space that reflects on earlier artistic traditions, and links the themes of the four previous days as converging in virtual or cyber-space. If the Internet is the most obvious manifestation of the "excess" and "overload" of documentation practices, then perhaps "web art" is a competent way of taking charge -- through participation, creation and subversion of virtual space. Making your own virtual and web-based creations will be a vital part of the learning experience. About the PUKAR MONSOON Pedagogic interventions are important to a new generation of urban youth whose critical understanding of society is mainly formed in the space of undergraduate colleges, and through negotiating the world of the mass media. In a spirit of engagement with these unexplored spaces and voices, PUKAR organises the PUKAR Monsoon: a series of lectures presentations, interactive sessions and activities from May to August every year in which college students address a specific theme through a variety of creative pedagogic approaches. The first annual PUKAR Monsoon, held in July and August 2002 in eight colleges in Mumbai was "The City at Work: Livelihoods and Ways of Belonging". Reflection on the history and economics of everyday life in the city helped students cultivate a critical sensibility about the market at a pre-professional stage of their lives. In the PUKAR Monsoon 2002, we used the idea of livelihood or work as an entry point for student participation in small activities or documentation projects to examine and understand how class and cultural identities are changing in the context of globalisation in Mumbai. Three short video-clips, installations, charts and small essays were some of the output which were then collectively shared and discussed in a subsequent discussion at The Bombay Paperie in August 2002. PUKAR MONSOON 2003: "On Cities, On Water" The theme for PUKAR Monsoon 2003 is "On Cities, On Water". Water as substance and as medium has been central to urban development throughout human history. In our city, as in many other world cities, modern urban experience and "structures of feeling" are definitively connected to the city's geographical form as island, and its location on the coastline. In the context of globalisation, other dimensions of water, and of the relationship between cities and water are becoming increasingly visible and contested in the public arena -- notably, the privatisation of water resources and the infrastructural networks delivering water. One of the aims of PUKAR Monsoon 2003 is to enable young people to develop a critical understanding of these and other relationships between cities and water. We propose that these connections could be explored along four axial dimensions of water -- in relation to its role as conduit, in the promotion of concourse and commerce, and in its dimension as contaminant. PUKAR Monsoon 2003 will work to create a better understanding of the political and cultural implications of these connections among the student participants, and will also attempt to extend the dialogue with other citizens. We expect that artists, intellectuals and activists from the student community as well as from the wider public in the city and beyond will participate in different ways. formatted partition

a very weird thing happened with me today. i changed the filesystem type of an "ext3" partition to "vfat" using "fdisk". i even booted into my windoze os, formatted the newly created partition, and can use the whole of 2.5GB. the weird thing starts now. i boot again into my gnu/linux os, and change the filesystem type in "/etc/fstab" to "vfat". when i tried to mount the partition, an error "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda9, ......" was displayed. however i was able to mount the partition as "ext3" without any problems i can even copy files to that partition the funny thing is that i can access the same partition as "vfat" from windoze and as "ext3" from gnu/linux. the files that i store from windoze are not accessible from gnu/linux and vice-versa any comments are welcome :-) -- Pradnyesh Sawant(The doubtfire) B.E. Next, when you start getting error message reporting a file missing in 'modules' directory, go to 'modules' directory in Pango installation directory.There you will find dirs like indic,hebrew,tamil arabic etc. One-by-one go to each of these dirs and run 'make'. hi all ashok had mailed calling for speakers and idea for the workshop at Shah and Anchor Kutchhi Engg College abt GNU/Linux awareness, but its strange to get a luke warm response from the list. please suggest set of softwares / tools that can be used by engg students so that we can enlighten them abt the same. we need help from ppl who use gnu/linux to create awareness abt gnu/linux in academic institutions. we invite ppl to spk on topics relevant to engg students like programming in QT, Graphics programming (c graphics), DSP type of things etc. guys plz come forward help create a wave in the academic world :) currently we have chalked out a tentative schedule that is as follows : Day - I :- 19th April 2003 1) Understanding the Software Freedom Murder of the Myths 2) Getting around with GNU - will talk about OS basics, GNU/Linux CLI and Desktops. 3) Installing a dual boot GNU/Linux System - redhat and/or knoppix. 4) Wonders of GNU - Where and how is GNU being used. How can students benifit ? 5) Question - answers with Handson session - for batch 1. Day - II :- 20th April 2003 1) Text editing with VI and Emacs and programming in Shell Scripts in Bash and C with GCC. 1) or maybe we will have will have QT programming or something around gui 2) Basics of System Administration and networking. 4) Intro to Apache and writing small CGI applications using PHP. 5) handon - batch 2. feed back is welcome. People will usually be ready to try out an OS, if they know how to get their basic work done, like checking e-mail, using office apps etc. One session should probably be dedicated to this. How to customise your OS, connect to the Net, check mail, intro to a decent office app etc. Day to day activities. Workshop at SAKEC - details

Hello people, I visited SAKEC on the 9th and 10th of April and spoke to the HOD. Prof. B.R. Bairi and students. The registrations have begun and a rough figure will be available on the 16th or 17th. A few IEEE guys have come forward as volunteers. The workshop will comprise of final year and third year students from ETRX/Computers/IT. 100 or maybe more. First year and second year students cannot be accomodated due to space constraints. This is sad since these are the students who would be in a position to facilitate the growth of GNU/Linux movement in the college. But the principal wants it this way. For hands on training, a lab consisting of 20 computers, each with a CDROM drive, will be available. Other labs are also available but the computers - though branded and very new, do not have CDROM drives and do not have GNU/Linux. So Knoppix cannot be used for the hands-on progamming sessions in these other labs. ------------ Is there any alternative way in which we can use these labs for the hands-on programming sessions since 20 computers would probably not be sufficient? The college may dedicate a new upcoming laboratory for GNU/Linux. But they still have a lot of questions some of which may be answered during the workshop. Unfortunately, due to lack of awareness among students and staff, the college alone accomplish this. So, we have the additional responsibility of convincing the college staff and answering their questions. This is important considering the fact that the college does not have a single person (student or staff) who knows the benefits of using GNU/Linux. Even if some students are enthusiastic, the management will not give students any freedom unless they are themselves satisfied. Therefore, one of our aims during the workshop, should be to facilitate the develpment of a GNU/Linux laboratory. -------------- A classroom that can accomodate 100 odd students has been arranged for. The problem is that the room is beautifully lit by sunlight so I wonder how the presentation slides would be visible. Silly, but is a valid point, nevertheless. :-). Any suggestions? The people who have confirmed their presence for the workshop are Dinesh Shah, Harsh Busa, Trevor Warren, Dr. Nagarjuna and Warren Brian Noronha. More speakers are needed. Please come forward.Veterans, newcomers . . The following is a tentative list of topics: 1. Understanding Software Freedom with GNU - Murder of the Myths 2. Getting around with GNU – OS basics, GNU/Linux commands and desktops. 3. Installing a dual boot GNU/Linux system 4. Economies of Free Software and revenue models (3 and 4 will be combined) 5. Basics of System Administration and networking – commonly used commands and networking concepts. 7. Wonders of GNU - Where and how is GNU being used? How can students benefit? 8. Introduction to web technologies – Apache and writing CGI applications with PHP. 9. GNU/Linux Online Resources + Q & A sessions. Topics may be clubbed together, added or deleted. An integer overflow is present in the xdrmem_getbytes() function of glibc 2.3.1 and earlier. Depending upon the application, this vulnerability could cause buffer overflows and may be exploitable leading to arbitrary code execution. All users should upgrade to these errata packages which contain patches to the glibc libraries and therefore are not vulnerable to these issues. Red Hat would like to thank eEye Digital Security for alerting us to this issue. The Red Hat Linux 8.0 errata packages also contain a number of bug fixes that are not security related. For details, see the list of bugzilla bugs fixed by this errata or the ChangeLog. [Updated 9 April 2003] Some bugs newly introduced by the Red Hat Linux 8.0 errata packages has been discovered, such as wine problems or problems with debugging threaded applications. Once the glibc upgrade has been completed, you must either reboot the system or restart all programs on the system (for example, by using telinit 1 and switching back to the old runlevel). Rebooting the system or restarting the system programs is necessary to avoid vulnerable glibc copies in memory and because changes in NSS internal interfaces which mean that one cannot mix old NSS modules or libresolv in an application with upgraded NSS modules or libresolv in one running application. If sshd is running so that the other services can be restarted remotely or for a remote reboot during an unattended glibc upgrade, glibc will also restart sshd. 4. I was writing a small application which used XML using the classes in Qt's XML Module... I faced some linking problem. I thought I I had made some mistake... Then I read Qt documentation again.... But soon I realized that I was doing verything right.... On RedHat any valid user can shut down or reboot the sysytem by giving the following shell command user@machine # poweroff user@machine # reboot How can I disable it? I have already disabled CrlAltDel. Also is there any other way a nonprivileged user can shutdown a system, if so how do I disable it. As per further discussions with the IEEE guys at SAKEC who have volunteered for the event, the following points are now clear: 1. There are around 95 registrations already completed. The registrations are carried out through the IEEE forum website so the possibility of dummy registrations are minimal. 2. There will be a public address system (mike+speakers) etc. , LCD projectors etc. available. 3. It was running properly. we were installing Oracle 9i... and after that installation we rebooted the system. Now, the system boots in command mode only. I tried "startx"...failed. I tried configuring with "setup" , it tests the resolution and stuff successfully(i'll be able to see the GUI while it probes), didnt work out... again startx fails after reboot. please tell me how to proceed.. Divide ourselves into teams to prepare slides for each topic that is to be handled during the workshop. This will ensure that the speakers have some breathing space. 2. thanks to all for the responses. (yes, potato and woody refer to debian releases - and don't have anything to do with kernel versions. thanks for correcting. it's just that i have started mentally identifying 2.4 with woody.) also, upgrading kernel from 2.2 to 2.4 is not like any other upgrade since it crosses the lakhman rekha from filesystem ext2 to ext3 (as supreet pointed out). thus in some ways there's no going back! that's why i wanted specific advice. of course, i could simply install the new system from scratch. but that would be too time consuming, etc etc. that's the last resort anyway. so, my qs again - has anyone actually done the kernel upgrade using apt? someone also suggested downloading the binary image and adding one more entry in lilo.conf. i don't know if that will work though. regds ajit ranade. -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ .

Problem with Fonts using gtk

Hi all, I an using Red Hat Linux 8.0. I have installed True Type Fonts (http://corefonts.sourceforge.net). The fonts work perfectly fine with all applications (Mozilla, Open Office, KDE applications, etc., but application based on gtk+ don't use these fonts. For example, Abiword. While using Abiword, the fonts list doesn't show the true type fonts that I have installed. Same with applications like Gedit, Gnumeric, Nautilus, etc. I can't figure out the problem. I tried deleting old cache files, old configuration files, of these applications, including .gnome, .gtkrc, etc. I also tried rebooting, but somehow these applications refuse to show these fonts. hi again-- well i dont know what the problem was, but i plugged in the card again to see if it works and all i can say is tht THE FREAKIN CARD WORKS!!! its cool to have wireless LAN access on Linux. Diskless Nodes

Hello linuxers, I tried to configure Diskless Nodes in our college. I'm first trying with one server and one client. Now the client is able to identify itself and the server i.e. it knows the IP address of the server. However I am not able to ping the client from the server. Also the client starts loading the kernel. However the Kernel does not load fully and the booting does not continue. I have no clue what may be the problem. I went through LTSP documentation but I could not figure out from that too. Please guide. P.S. I saw that there are two LED's on the Network Card and one glows continuosly and other blinks according to the traffic. I guess the constantly ON LED is clock signal/Carrier or something. Now when I directly connect the cable from Server to the node there is no LED glowing. However when I connect them through Hub the LED glows. Do I need to use a hub just to connect one Server and one node? This is from a person who has no knowledge whatsoever of Networking. Please bear with me. -- Nikhil nikhiljoshi.cjb.net

Hello people, As posted earlier, the GLUG has agreed to conduct a workshop at Shah and Anchor Kutchhi Engineering College (SAKEC) - Chembur. Thanks a ton folks! Date: 19th. and 20th. of April (third Sat. and Sun.) The audience for the workshop will comprise of students from 3 engineering streams: a) Electronics b) Information Technology c) Computers We can expect approx. 100 to150 odd students for the workshop, maybe more. Adequate facilities in terms of infrastructure are in place(lecture hall, LCD projectors, Labs etc.). Audience background: ----------------- The audience have no clue of what GNU is all about. Need Help

Hi Group, We are using rsh command for file transfer between our two servers. We are using ssh protocol for rsh by using 'rsh -e ssh '. As we are not using certficates for ssh, the ssh daemon ask the password from the user before establishing the connection with the remote server. rsh don't have any facility to embed password in the command itself. The problem starts from here. As we want to automate the whole process we are planning to run the rsh command in the cron jobs. Now in the cron job we cannot enter the password. I think in the shell script i cannot supply the password in the situation like this. Will anybody kindly suggest me a way to overcome this problem, like using any other scripting language or something else. Thanx and regards, Prashant Parab

Hi comrades :D I sincerely think that we should not shuffle around the venue for the monthly GLUG meet. This causes a lot of confusion ... to a lot of people. Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) at Mankhurd is a good venue. Among all the venues used for previous meets it has been the best. There we have a good airconditioned lecture hall (Summer hai bhai ;-) ...), a projector and a PC available. There is no need to shuffle around the venue. If everybody agrees then I'll put up the notification on the GLUG website. let's not flood the list with one-liners saying "I agree". problem running java code in jedit 4.1

I am using jedit 4.1 as a java editor on linux. rsh issues

hi i had a small problem . i m actually using PVM in it and pvm inturn uses rsh for the communication between different nodes of a cluster. now the problem is that i am being able to rsh between the nodes using commands like [tony@micks tony]$ rsh tonylin [tony@tonylin tony]$ ls ***here micks n tonylin are the host names and tony is the user name**** this kind of a thing works fine, BUT there is another option in rsh such that we send only one command and it gets executed remotely, but i get an error like [tony@micks tony]$ rsh tonylin ls rcmd : socket : Permission Denied [tony@micks tony]$ now i even checked /var/log/messages on both the machines (micks and tonylin) but found no entry! pvm uses similar things thus i m not even being able to add a host on the virtual machine and it also gives the same error message. plz help me on this. We were talking about improving the quality of this list, so here are some random suggestions that come to mind: o Introduce the list to new members; it always helps to have critical mass. o Ask list members what *they* expect from the list o Expand the admin team, allocating specific responsibilities to each o Set up another mailing list for linuxers-admin, to coordinate activities among the linuxers o Link up events/reports/happenings on *this* list with (i) other LUGs and FSUGs in and around Mumbai and within the rest of India and (ii) other international networks such as linux-announce(a)NEWS.ORNL.GOV This work should be specifically alloted to one or two persons o Encourage silent members to post o Lot of behind-the-scene emails to encourage more positive activity on the list o While getting angry is natural and a sign of youth, higher politeness levels could ensure better communication o Women members, who seem conspicuous by their absence, need special encouragement... Issues with Linksys wireless LAN card

Hi all-- I run Mandrake 9.0 on my laptop.I have a linksys WPC 11 wireless (802.11b) card which i would like to make use of while working on Linux. I got the driver from Linksys and configured it such that I use pcmcia_cs instead of kernel PCMCIA code.the driver was compiled and successfully installed. i opened the wlan-ng.opts file to insert the SSID of the network which in my case is (SMU1911).The campus network uses DHCP. However modifing the file and restarting pcmcia did not help. I know for sure the device is installed because cardctl ident shows the device name correctly.Also when I try to connect from the Mandrake Control center I can see that although bytes are being received, no bytes are being sent. Is there anything that i failed to tweak.what else do i need to have a look at and modify? lpr printing to a dot matrix printer, pls help on some finer aspects supposedly

we are sending a string to a lpr using FILE *prn = popen ( "lpr","w"); finally we do a pclose() this routine get called for some asynchronous event. the problem is that after every close or new open ( i dont know ) the lpr gives a page feed ( or form feed ) and runs to the next page. now the stuff we are printing is 5 lines long i dont want the whole page to go waste.. how do i stop this from happening. i tried keeping FILE *ptr as extern but it does not work ( should it work, ?? ) HELP !!! rahul

Hello E'body, The problem is: My Linux(RedHat 7.1) machine is in a lan with windows(2000) machines. I'm able to ping from my Linux machine to others and viceversa. when I say http://localhost/ or http://ip (actual ip of linux machine) its giving me the test page properly. But when I use http://ip (actual ip of linux machine) on any of the windows machines it says 'page not found' please tell me how do I go about this. shud I configure apache? IPSec on kernels 2.5

Hi. Does anybody have any experience on using VPNs on IPSec on GNU/Linux systems? I know of freeswan, and tried my hand at it. But our setup has a masquerading firewall, which complicates matters apparently. The Windows users use SonicWall, and I have no idea how it handles things. So, no success with freeswan (help here will be appreciated too) But recently, I switched to kernel 2.5.65+, which has support for ipsec builtin. Does anyone have any experience with 2.5 kernels and ipsec? A howto I found on the net wasn't much help. We have to authenticate with a login/pass to the remote site's VPN gateway, but I found description of no such thing in any of these howtos. Thanks! -- jaju

looking at posts from the last few days, it seems that there is no more quality left in this list. We have people asking the list for jobs (many have been rejected before reaching the list). We have people searching for other people. To both kinds of people, there are sections in your local newspaper that deal with this. Unfortunately, we will always have people who post without subject lines, or subject lines that says "Help" and those who ask the list to unsubscribe them. To those who post asking for a job: The lug has a lot of work if you want it. The website needs to be maintained, meetings need to be arranged, workshops need to be arranged, a lot of promotion and advocacy has to be done. Are you interested? You will not be paid for this ... ever. For programming jobs, there is also a lot of Free software that needs to be developed. You will find projects on sourceforge, savannah and freshmeat. You will probably not get paid for this either. To those who want information urgently - pay for commercial support. To those who complain that no one has responded to their mail - have patience and maybe rethink your posting strategy. some problems faced in RH 7.3

We have a server with RedHat 7.3. The networking was working fine until two days back when suddenly no services running on this server can be accessed from other systems/clients. The "xinetd" is coming up properly on booting. Also though no service like telnet/ftp/httpd works, other systems are able to ping the server on IP address. We hav tried the xinetd with debug enabled but no clues there also !! Any help available ? Secondly Apache server on this system has been made functional changing the DocumentRoot to another directory. But it still resolves to /var/www. Is there any other file to be updated.??? - Mohan

Hello all, Well from last few days kind of activity going on is of great concern to all members of LUG. Let me tell you if we think that this list is only for quality people than we are doing un-justice to fundamentally growing demand and the people. this should be treated as popularity measure that people are willing to act and react in this list. How one can distinguish own self as a geek? newbie? Surprisingly I have been in this industry from last 11 years and been to almost all Part of the world but I have never seen people who claim that they are geek I have seen people who are working as hardcore developer/architecture to the length who design something which was never thought of but no one has a this kind of problem than why we should have it. we are nothing less than newbie as far as technology is concern and lets do not divide people on this basis otherwise we will block our own growth. As far as job posting is concern I think it is good idea to have them on our site rather than posting to list, have define format for job posting and than filter that posting and redirect to the job listing archive of the site. Dont try to stop this as this is will help us to build good community it self which is helping and growing by its own. Just for personnel discomfort lets not fight we all are here for good reason and be good to absorb some junks for others who are in process to be good or else tomorrow they will also do same thing what they faced during their time. I hope every one will take this in positive manner and understand basic idea behind this. And yes plz.. do not start again on my posting I am not trying to pretend as geek or something like that I have just given you example of my experience and what I have seen in this industry and I dont claim that you have not seen this but this is a humble request that everyone should be considered equally and not on basis of what they know and what we know. number of files in a directory

Hello E'body, I tried out what Mr.Amitay and Mr.Mitul told, but it didnt work out. plz help me. The problem is: My Linux(RedHat 7.1) machine is in a lan with windows(2000) machines. I'm able to ping from my Linux machine to others and viceversa. when I say http://localhost/ or http://ip (actual ip of linux machine) its giving me the test page properly. But when I use http://ip (actual ip of linux machine) on any of the windows machines it says 'page not found' please tell me how do I go about this. shud I configure apache? Skewed eyes

Well, I have my own opinions about RMS. I wonder why most of the population thinks of RMS that way. A recent slashdot post almost confirms this: It is either that the majority population has skewed eyes, or RMS isn't projecting his message in a way that garners trust and wins people. It is quite common for the majority population to have skewed eyes because they are systematically misinformed. For instance, most Americans today believe that Iraq launched the 9/11 attacks, although this is false, because Dubya has persistently misinformed them. Something similar is happening here: the idea that the system is "Linux" typically reaches people before I do. When people learn the system is "Linux", they often think it was mainly developed by Linus Torvalds; when I tell them the truth, they think I am lying. Or they may condemn me for asking them to make a change. If you call the system "Linux", you increase the handicap, so that more people will condemn me. If you call it "GNU/Linux", you will tend to reduce the handicap.

hi world, I just tried out the linc utility and the genlinrc.. trouble is..it doesnt work...i still get that "You are not allowed to login from this machine error.. does that "u-logged-in-from-win-now-u-cant-from-lin" problem still persist? Hi Gurpreet If your computer cannot handle the graphics try a lower resolution 16 bits per pixel. I had the same problem with Unreal tournament on win 98, p3 500, 128 MB Ram,sis 6326. When You login into the KDE as a normal user, the dcopserver create a file into your home directory called lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 46 mar 25 17:09 .DCOPserver_sun03 -> /usr/johndoe/.DCOPserver_sun03_192.168.88.88:0 -rw-r--r-- 1 johndoe user 52 mar 25 17:24 .DCOPserver_sun03_192.168.88.88:0 this file contains a reference to the directory in a form like this: local/sun03:/tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop1348-1048616687 1348 OK, now seems that your process can't write to /tmp/.ICE-unix so dcopserver appears don't start. Hey ALL, I have a C executable, which I want to run as a Service just like "httpd" or "mysqld", I guess its called "DAEMON mode", how should I do this. I do not want to run it via CRON. Hi, I Sco unix, there was a nice command line utility to lock a console / terminal session. It would display an (optional) banner, and unlock only on supplying a password. Is there any such command in linux ? Thanks Shahed.

I think in all fairness, LFY is a much bolder step than PCQ giving away linux CD's as an apology! If PCQ was any bolder, they should've started such a separate mag at least a couple of years ago. In fact they did run a poll whether readers were ready for such a mag and despite gettin overwhelming response in the affirmative (by their own admission) they decided not to go down that path. Another thing, LFY is talking of real applications on Linux, real news about companies moving over to Linux...All other mags (PCQ) have done is tell you how to configure samba or squid ... as if that's what linux is meant for...mags like those have done more harm to the image of Linux as an alternative that anything else. Take for example the case of CRM packages: There are scores of open-source STABLE CRM packages available under linux...or the case of network scanners and firewall packages (there are at least 3 good stable gui based ones) but all they write about is how to get and install such stuff on Windows... I support LFY's initiative (despite what RMS rants about) since they are trying to walk a path no one has walked...and is not GNU/Linux all about doing that? Lastly, here's something everyone should know: When i first went over to LFY's site, it supported only IE. I wrote back to them and complained about it... guess what? In less than 15 days, they got it running perfectly with Mozilla, Konqueror...essentially browser independent. I did not subscribe to the magazine till it was supported on Mozilla or Konqueror. [OT] Distributed file system.

Hi, We need to create a distributed file system as part of an academic project. We'll be making the system an abstraction over the GNU/Linux FS. The user needs to start up a shell that we provide, and then he is on the DFS. The DFS is spread across about 8 machines in a LAN. Since this is an abstraction over an existing FS, implementation details a not relevant. However, we were wondering over what would be a sound policy of data distribution across the machines? If a user creates a new file, how does the system decide on which machine to actually store it? Storing on the m/c that has maximum free space seems logical, but at the same time a lame policy (or is it the best way?). Currently we are not considering fault tolerance, i.e. each file is stored at a single place (no duplicates). However, if anyone could, please do shed some light on that as well. hi FN i was in pune this weekend and was amazed to see LFY on each n every stand in the city, good going! the quality of the magazines content was pretty ok kind, not very impressive! there is still a lot more room for improvement. ->>the RMS interview was BAD. it shud have been certaily much more informative but it wasnt. ->> the articles on suse n openoffice n wine didnt have the spark either BUT i have some praise too ->> the CD was an EXCELLENT compilation! things to watch in the cd... - anjuta - QUAKE 3 for linux suggestions, ->> i think we shud push the magazine to be renamed to GNU/Linux for you.
