Dear Friend, This is Jawahar, Sys.Admin from Gandhigram University. Until now we are working in Windows platform and we have planned to change over to Linux and mainly for Dikless workstation (we are having nearly 50, 486 machines. I have tried all the possibilities in www.ltsp.org and all other site you have mentioned. But i am receiving error Kernle Panic, No init found. Hi Friends I am a linux enthusiast and exclusively use linux for computing. I am working in a government University where IT and communication infrastructure are in the process of big change. The complete university network is being upgraded to gigabit net and university administration is being totally computerized. At this juncture a very crucial decision needs to be taken. That is regarding the proprietary vs open source software base of the system. I would like to impress upon the authorities to go in for open source softwares. There are supporters of this view but there are also many more who have lots of apprehensions about this. I want to give a talk on this issue to make a very strong and compelling case for GNU/Linux systems. I need ideas regarding the presentation to make it a success. Regards, Manoj

hi all what are friend "cromium" (nice name ;)... ) says is... Confussion in DRBD and ENBD

Hi all I am having some little bit of confussion in DRBD and ENBD(Enhanced Network Block devise). Drbd is a file system for mirroring systems across a LAN. Enbd does same thing but it is not a file system. I am not understanding the exact difference between these two. What is the full name of DRBD. any one plz help me. thanx in advance. You are confusing familarity with learning ability. For a peson who has never used Win98/95, using GNU/Linux is as easy as learning something new. After he is familiar with Linux he finds it only little more complicated (but a lot more frustrating) using win98. I say this from first hand experience with my 6 year old nephew and his friends. This group were a motley group of neighbourhood kids ranging from 3 yrs to 10 yrs, some going to convent schools and some to vernacular. They used the PC mostly for games. They would happily boot into windows or RH6.2 (this was in 2000) and play whatever games they had decided to play. What did they prefer? The 3 to 5 yr olds most suprisingly preferred linux and it's simple games like smashing billgates. The others preferences depended on which game they liked. some fell for quake, some for flight simulator or car racing and hence linux. my nephew played NBA which was available only on win98 and used that mostly, but kept nagging me to get the linux version because windows would crash. Governments and bussinesses are busy exploiting the inability of society to accept responsibility. So what has this got to do with GNU/Linux. The target audience. So far the target has been users. We should now focus on the decision makers in educational institutions. How about a workshop for lectures and professors in Maharashtra. Self help with a little help from your friends that's what GNU/Linux is about. (I promise i will deliver a lecture on embedded systems at this workshop ;-)). Society expects somone else to foot the bill so we have "subsidised" education, travel, petrol, housing, software - GNU software being the exception - the subsidy being far more expensive than the unsubsidised product elsewhere. Hi everybody, I am an avid Linux fan. But we have gotta face it: what the CM of Goa said was right: in their present avataars, all distros of Linux, including Redhat 8.0, are difficult for kids. We have to keep in mind that in a classroom, there are roughly three varieties of kids: sharp, average, and dumb. We have to try and cater atleast to the first two. And Linux distros are NOT good for average beginners (though the sharp beginners might take to them like fish take to water.) The solution is to let the kids have the M$ handholding at first. Let em have it easy. After they have picked up the basics, they can move over to Linux. Especially when they are ready for some programming action. Its very bad to start learning your programming on an M$ platform. (just as its very bad for an average guy to start learning to use a computer on a Linux platform.) AMD K6-2, slightly underclocked, turns off spontaneously. The only thing I suspect is heat damage to the CPU or mainboard, and want to confirm if possible before I buy a replacement. Turn-off is independent of activity, OS, and ambient temperature (happens in Windows, Linux, with and without A/C). System has 2 hard drives. The whole thing is about 3-4 years old. It is not a power supply problem, as I changed the SMPS with no effect. The power switch seems ok, I will check the reset button later. Hello all, good-evening. There are various perspectives to this story here. One of the most important ones to be looked into an introspected on is the need for proper documentation/training along with the machines that are being dolled out the students in goa. Lets not give the government an oppurtunity to complain. If we have given so...then lets learn from those mistakes of ours. We should make it a point to have setup the appropriate infrastructure to support such a noble cause. Any of us who has the capability to bridge the gap between the techies and the bureaucracy should make it a point to touch base with the appropriate authorities and brief them on a plan of action. Any investment can guarantee ROI only if the same is executed in a valiant fashion with due planning. If any of these important elements fail to live up to the expectations the ROI can be nullified to a great extent. So....lets get together, sit across the table, hash out a plan and chalk out a strategy to get back the earlier plan of GOG on the road again. Am ready for any sales pitches to be made to any of the imp beaureaucrats. Infact if any of us from the Bombay Gnu-LUG can help out please let us know.....we will be ready to attack. PPPD is not geting activated

Hi friends, When I connect to the net using wvdial, some times, pppd is not geting activated. But connection is through. This is happening not regularly. Some times pppd will be activated and there won't be any data transmission. The problem which I am facing is the set of uploading command in my ip-up.local file is not geting executed some times. But when I connect through kppp dialer, there is no problem. pppd is geting activated always and there is proper data transmission. It is functioning well whenever I connect through it. I had set crontab for wvdial for dialing the net at regular intervel. Please suggest me how to overcome the problem. Regards, Vinod.

I dont know but this should help. For details read man pppd. Use ipparam as 'wvdial' parameter in wvdial peers file. This will be passed as sixth parameters when ip-up is called. How to Append in a file (FTP)

Hi friends, I have a web space and I am using ncftp function to upload the text file on web. (Eg. abc.txt) . Next time when I upload the same file, the old file get erased. Instead of erasing I want to append into abc.txt. I have used ncftp using -A option for doing that. But I have received an error that " Server is not permiting to Append/Restart Try again. The file abc.txt is having full access permissions. Please suggest me the alternative. I am able to append in to a file ( abc.txt) through the php modules available on web. Hello Luggers, good-morning. Lemme take this oppurtunity to thank all of you'll for your sustained support which has helped us all through our travels across the length and breadth of this state. I would like to take this oppurtunity to personally thank all of you all who donated CD's which we sold at the the event. Believe me...after the knoppix demo and post the talk Students MOBBED Gurpreet who was selling the cd's. Our 20 Copies(Consisting of GnuwinII+Knopix+IndLinux = 2cds) were sold out in 10 minutes.....and students were clammering for more. We were amazed to see 2nd year Engineering students from Walchand Sangli....develop some real fundu 8085-8086 Simulators with an amazing GUI in Java and have been talking to them on Putting the same into the GPL domain..(Dinesh...pls push them and email calling them to discuss the same with the LUG). Learning our lessons we are looking at offering the same at Gnunify as a 2 cd kit and only charging for the cost of the 2 cd's which we will plough into the event again. On the whole many other Engineering/MCA colleges in the interriors of Maharashtra are opening up to FSF and OS and want such events organised at their campus too. We are looking to build this sustained movement all around Maharashta with the help of these charged Warriors at the local institutes. Looking forward to your unhindered support in the future too. Lot of computing power by mixing many machines and using it for computing. One or more of these could be combined together in a cluster. It would've been good if you searched over the net for these defintions. I have this peculiar problem with g++ under linux. This is a small piece of code that i wrote #include<iostream.h> main() { cout << "blahblah"; } When i try to compile it, i get the following warning In file included from /usr/include/c++/3.2/backward/iostream.h:31, from first.cpp:1: /usr/include/c++/3.2/backward/backward_warning.h:32:2: warning: #warning This file includes at least one deprecated or antiquated header. Please consider using one of the 32 headers found in section 17.4.1.2 of the C++ standard. Examples include substituting the <X> header for the <X.h> header for C++ includes, or <sstream> instead of the deprecated header <strstream.h>. To disable this warning use -Wno-deprecated. To get a warning free compile i commented out the line #include backward_warning from iostream.h When i try to run the executable the shell does a silent return, without printing the blahblah as it is supposed to. I redirected the output to a file, and it contained blahblah. I dont think the problem is with g++, but i cant exactly put my finger on it. Hi folks, Are there users of RH5.0 out there? I am asking this, as I have some systems running RH5.0 (2.0.36) since ages. Of course, I had upgraded sendmail,apache, PHP etc over these years on these boxes, and they are serving me well since their inception. IOW, *they do what they are supposed to do*, leaving nothing much to whine about. They mostly function as mailservers. I dont blame entirely the retro-ness(?) on my laziness, but mostly on the principle "Dont fix it if it is not broken." I saw nothing broke, also my requirement is being met by these machines. However, any new system I build goes with "somewhat decently" recent versions of Linux [ie, RH7.0 (2.2.16-22) or 7.2, even though RH 8.0 is the current cool and hype thing.] I would like to know how you ladies and gentlemen out here treat the versions (if you guys have any) that power my said horses. I suppose one prime plus point of Linux is that it likes older hardware as well. How do we treat the older kernels? Tear 'em down? Thanks for your time and patience in advance, Anu Mathew

Hi, Anyone tried proc filesystem? I tried working with the, procfs example in /usr/src/linux but it shows errors in procfs.h, I am not sure if the example is for the kernel 2.4. I googlized but found same example, is that program have to be modifed to run on kernel 2.4. ThankX in Adv JAI

FREEDUC CD : excellent content, but could not get mouse working

I have the freeduc 1.1 CD which is based on knoppix 3.1Beta created by www.ofset.org . I can boot from the CD. I can access programs with keyboard. However it does not enable my mouse. On the same computers, the knoppix CD works very fine. The collection of educational programs on freeduc CD is REALLY excellent. Can some crack the problem. Dr Siva at OIIT has run the same CD on hois laptop and desktop without any problems and has good opinion of it. If we can confidently run it on ususal machines ( mine are usual ones) , it will be 'killer' ( please suggest a better pro-peace word in these days of war mongering) application for free software. Hi, I am working on RH8.0. I configured php and apache, but the post or get are not working. Any data sent by the form is not being received by the php page. Cannot get Pinnacle PCTV Plus (TV Tuner card) to work

Hi list, Problem Description: The card is auto-detected, however I am unable to change channels. More precisely, the last channel that I have viewed in Windows is the one that appears in linux (and no other channels are detected). Details: 1) Redhat 8.0, kernel: 2-4-18.14 2) Selected card = 39 in the bttv CARDLIST file. 3) using xawtv as tv-viewer. 4) dmesg says 'frequency out of range'.(when I try to change channels in xawtv) 5) According to Pinnacle, this is a special indian edition card. I wonder if being "special" is causing problems... :-) I have a sneaky feeling that this version of the bttv driver doesn't come with PAL-BG support (which PCTV PLUS uses). I have no idea whether PAL-BG is supported in the newer versions of the bttv driver. I went to bytesex.org/bttv and checked the CHANGELOG. No luck, no PAL-BG mentioned anywhere. And Yes I have RTFM and done _tons_ of searching on the web. I searched the archives and I found that "Abhir Joshi" of this list had asked this same question in October last year, but got no responses. I will be grateful for _any_ help/tips/pointers. I am desperate, since I am running only Linux on my box now. Thank you, Tarun

Setting font in Evolution

Hello Luggers, Does anybody use Evolution ? I want to change the Font for mail display. But there is no option to change the font settings. for display of mail. There is option to increase the text size, but no option to change the font. Same problem while composing mail. If I compose mail in plain text, I don't have the option to change the Font nor can I change the default font size. I understand that I am composing in plain text so which font I use is of no importance. But the default font size is so small, that while composing mail, it is painful for the eyes. Anyone using evolution has had this problem ? Have I missed out something somewhere ? Rajen.

What's new in Gnome 2.2?

Hi all! Gnome 2.2 is out (it's been over a day now) and it's great to know that two of my major complaints about Metacity (the new window manager) have disappeared. Metacity now supports "stay-on-top" and "stay-below" hints. You can also set your own hotkeys for running commands now (hope it gets that as nicely as sawfish). Most significant improvements have happened in Nautilus, which I can't say much about since I'm more comfortable with the CLI. Other goodies include program start-up notification (no more checking for disk activity to confirm that your mouse-click had some effect), "Open Recent" action like "Start > Documents" All of this sounds great. deleting oversized messages without fetching them

When using fetchmail, how do I delete oversized messages from the server without actually fetching them? The man page of fetchmail doesn't help. Visited the picopeta site after a long time. They actually had something to sell. You still hear the "lowcost" spiel from them off and on. Here is the price. Platinum: 10 Simputers, 20 SmartCards, 10 licenses for proprietary software (pricing: Rs. 190,000 in India, US $4,599 overseas) Gold: 5 Simputers, 10 SmartCards, 5 licenses for proprietary software (pricing: Rs. 98,500 in India, US $2,499 overseas) Silver: 2 Simputers, 5 SmartCards, 2 licenses for proprietary software (pricing: Rs. 49,000 in India, US $1,299 overseas) No mention of prices without the proprietory software. I need some help on DOSEMU. I have installed the latest version (released Dec'2002) under RH 8.0 (kernel 2.4.18) and the same is working fine under X. If u dont have Grub then you have to manually edit your /etc/lilo.conf file to add the new kernel image(/boot/vmlinuz-openmosix) to your conf file. Just boot using the new kernel, start openmosix with /etc/init.d/openmosix start, and enjoy. Mosix Clustering Problem

Hi all, I downloaded current stable version of linux kernel 2.4.20. and I applyed the patch of open mosix to that kernel. I enable all options regarding openmosix.in the xconfig. after completion of all steps in the kernel installiation I reboot my machine. whatever I enable in the xconfig that all are working properly except that openmosix files. Before getting to the details let's consider slammer (again). What made slammer so successful? The overriding factor that made slammer so successful was it's ability to spread. What made it's spread a foregone conclusion was the fact that every vulnerable SQL Server/MSDE had a "jmp esp" instruction at address 0x42B0C9DC. This was the address that was used to gain control of the SQL Server's path of execution to a point where the worm's payload, the "arbitrary code", would be executed. This address is in a dynamic link library (DLL) , sqlsort.dll which has an "image base" of 0x42AE0000. Every image file, DLL or executable, has an "Image Base" and this base is the preferred location where the file should be loaded into memory by the Windows Loader. [I don't want to digress, here, as to what happens if there's a conflict. See the references at the end.] Now if this Image Base on one particular system had been 0x42AF0000 then the worm would have failed to infect this particular box; the "jmp esp" instruction that should've been at 0x42B0C9DC on this system would be found at 0x42B1C9DC so the worm would have been off target. The SQL Server running on this system, whilst still being "vulnerable" to the buffer overflow vulnerability would have been invulnerable to this worm. Sure - the SQL Server may have crashed - but it would not have been compromised. It's like sickle cell. Someone born with the gene that causes sickle cell anaemia, a blood disorder that affects many people of a West African origin, or carriers of the gene, sickle cell trait, do not suffer from the ill affects of malaria, a disease caused by a parasite and most commonly spread by mosquitoes. Whilst someone with sickle cell trait can still catch malaria, the gene mutates the haemoglobin in their blood in such a way that they are invulnerable to the debilitating side effects and syptoms of the disease such as mental confusion, coma and death. There is an obvious evolutionary advantage to sickle cell trait; remember that the evolution of the species cares not about how long a person lives, only that they live long enough to pass on their genes. (Those with anaemia may suffer from crises, periods of acute pain so the trade off is somewhat questionable.) In areas where malaria is a common cause of death, being a carrier of the sick cell gene can help ensure that this person lives long enough to have progeny. This is Darwinian natural selection in progress. Rebasing ******* The problem with operating systems is that they all have pretty much the same "genetic code" which makes each and every one of them vulnerable to a new exploit. So we need to make them different and this can be achieved through rebasing. Rebasing is the process of changing the Image Base of an image file. By doing this the DLL/EXE is loaded into a different location in the virtual address space. Going back to Slammer, had I have rebased sqlsort.dll giving it a new base of 0x41410000 my box would have been invulnerable to the worm. If another worm were written, though, that used an address that contained a "jmp esp" instruction in kernel32.dll then I would be vulnerable. So I rebase kernel32.dll. But then another worm uses another DLL so I rebase that one, too. Eventually I've rebased all of the DLLs used by SQL Server mutating it's "genetic code", making it considerably different to any other SQL Server install on the planet. In fact if I rebase every DLL on my system and every executable then I can make my box almost invulnerable to a given exploit, past, present or future. It's not that my box is invulnerable to a buffer overflow vulnerability - it's just invulnerable to the exploits for it. To gain control of a system protected in such a way would require that the author of the exploit know the location of loaded DLLs. So how easy is it to rebase DLLs and executables? Very. Microsoft have provided a function to do this, ReBaseImage(), exported by imagehlp.dll. If you rebase an image the new base must be on a 64K boundary - i.e. if the image base mod 64000 !=0 the base is not valid. The only other problem is Windows File Protection. Once you've rebased a copy of the DLL you need to copy the new DLL over the old one but Windows File Protection won't allow you to do this. To get around the problem use the MoveFileEx and specifying the MOVEFILE_DELAY_UNTIL_REBOOT flag. Doing this will add a registry value, "PendingFileRenameOperations" to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\. You then need to add another DWORD value "AllowProtectedRenames" and set it to 1. Then restart the system. On reboot the new DLLs, with their new image bases, will be loaded. For example - here is sample output of listdlls after kernel32.dll and ws2_32.dll have been rebased. Now all the way through this I've been saying things like "almost invulnerable" etc. Here's the reason. For some vulnerabilities it may be sufficient to overwrite a saved return address, function pointer or whatever by only a few bytes. For example assume a saved return address is 0x44784500 and at address 0x44784536 is a "jmp ebx" instruction and ebx points to our code. Then we only need to overwrite the saved return address by 1 byte - with 0x36. So knowledge of the DLL load address is not needed. However, this scenario is going to happen so infrequently (if ever) that it does not detract from the idea of rebasing your system. There may other ways to bypass this method. Some ideas to further help prevent exploits from working. Use addresses such as 0x**000000 or 0x00**0000 for the new image base. With there being a NULL in much of the image's address space this will help. (This of course won't make a difference with unicode overflows) Ensure at least one (core) DLL has a base of 0x00119400 . This will ensure that a common stack location 0x00120000 has been assigned forcing the OS to chose another location for the stack. You get the idea. Feel free to mail me/lists with comments. Hi, I have the following setup. I have a client who has 10 offices across Mumbai. Each office has approximately 50 people on the LAN. All offices have a linux server that connects to a central office RAS via dial up. LAN users can then access servers located at the central office for nightly database updates etc.. All IPs used are RFC 1918 non-routable type. I want to install mail services for the client. A mail server will be placed at the central location. This mail server will be connected to the internet and receive all mails destined for the organisation - say fooabc.org. There will be mail servers at each branch office also which will handle intraoffice mail - i.e. mails within a single office. I want to know if we can use the same domain name say fooabc.org at each branch location. Essentially, when each branch mail server receives a mail for userA(a)fooabc.org, it should look up a table(or whatever) to find out if userA exists locally in that branch office. If userA exists then it should keep the mail locally. In case userA is at some other location, then the mail should be forwarded to the central mail server. I have a faint idea that LOTUS DOMINO does something like this. I want to do this setup with qmail, I am pretty conversant with qmail and have a few installations also. Can this be done? If not, then how can the same be achieved? Please suggest. Regards, Ashok

[OT] fixing the line length

Sometime back we had a discussion (poll?) on "fixing the line length" in our posts. Some, like myself, were of the opinion that the sender should wrap the text at an "appropriate" column, say, 66. Some others were arguing that this scheme only screws up the display. I just discovered this RFC [http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2646.txt] (have I been living in a cave?) that addresses this issue by introducing a new parameter with the text/plain type. It's "format=flowed|fixed". And guess what - Mozilla already supports it, Mutt is introducing it in 1.3, and Pine developers are thinking about it (I might be wrong, but that's what a recent message on the Pine mailing list suggests). Abstract: -------- It is now an accepted fact that no meaningful research and development in natural language processing, information extraction and machine translation can be carried out without WORDNETS. In India, wordnets are being built for the following languages: Hindi and Marathi at IIT Bombay, Tamil at Anna University Knowledge Based Center Chennai, Gujarathi at MS University Baroda (under the supervision of IIT Bombay), Oriya and Sanskrit at Utkal University Bhubaneswar and Bengali at IIT Kharagpur. The Hindi wordnet- which pioneered all these efforts- is at an advanced stage of development with about 11000 semantically linked synsets and with the associated software and the user interface. The final aim is to construct wordnets for Indian languages, link them internally to produce the INDO-WORDNET and then link the Indo-wordnet with the English wordnet and the Euro-Wordnet (a conglommeration of European language wordnets). This will facilitate automatic translation, multilingual information search and multilingual text processing. The Indo-wordnet project is being spearheaded by IIT Bombay. In the presentation with the above title, we describe the computational and linguistic issues involved in building Indian language wordnets with specific reference to Hindi and Marathi. Synsets are the building blocks of any wordnet, and the basic principles behind construcing the synsets, viz., Minimality, Coverage and Replacability will be discussed. In Indian language computing, verbs pose difficult problems- particularly in the storage structure of the wordnet- due to compounding, causative formation and onomaetopia. Our method of dealing with verbs will be spelt out. Certain semantic relations of the English and the Euro-wordnet have been further refined in the Hindi wordnet structure. Also cross-part of speech semantic relations have been explicitly set up for facilitating word sense disambiguation. We conclude the talk with two important applications of the wordnet- word sense disambiguation and automatic lexicon generation. We have used the verb noun associations to disambiguate the nouns through a semantic cluster formed in the wordnet. As for the second application, the wordnet hierarchy is used to create the disambiguators and the semantic attributes of the words in the document. This facilitates extracting knowledge from the document and automatic translation. That apart we are keenly looking forwards towards delivering a talk at Shivaji University on 8th which will include intorduction to fsf-os, First Strides with gnu-linux, knoppix(bootable cd with gnu-linux on it), carreers on gnu-linux, using free software-open source, why does gnu-linux/fsf-os for students make so much sense???. epson 480 printer cartridge

first of all i wud like 2 apologise 2 all of u for having my mail cause so much of flames on the grp. it was only b'coz of incomplete info provided by me. the other mistake that i realized i had made was 2 ask questions directly on the list without trying 2 find the ans myself first. tried 2 take the easy way out. but now that i've realized my mistake, i will try not to commit the mistake again. having apologised, i wud also like 2 make some clarifications: actually the epson 480 color stylus printer comes with a MS windows based utility 2 bring the cartridge holder in the open (from beneath the cover) while changing the cartridge. also after changing the cartridge, the ink in the new cartridge has 2 be charged b4 the printer can start printing. also other utilities provided r nozzle cleaning, head positioning, etc. it is **not** possible 2 open the printer & change the cartridge manually. (so i can't do ne thing even if god has given me 2 hands & a brain) also my printer IS connected to a linux machine (although i also have a windows OS, which i never use (it is there for my brother who uses the comp only 2 play games like NFS, cricket, etc which, unfortunately r not available on the linux platform)) it doesn't make sense 2 switch 2 windows just 2 change the printer cartridge. consider the case of a guy (probably hypothetical) who has the same printer but has only linux on his machine my question is definitely related to GNU/linux & i think that it was not at all out of place when it occured on the mailing list. 2 minor problems after kernel recompilation..

Hi, This is my first post to this mailing list although I have been lurking for a couple of months... I am facing 2 problems with my GNU/Linux box (Redhat 7.2, Kernel 2.4.19) since I installed the 2.4.19 kernel a couple of months ago.. 1) My system does not turn off automatically after issuing the powerdown command.. I have to turn it of manually. Earlier, with the RH 7.2 default kernel (2.4.7-10), the power would switch off automatically. Here are the how the relevant variables are set : CONFIG_PM=y CONFIG_APM=m # CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE=y CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE=y # CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT=y CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS=y # CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF is not set I got these settings from linuxnewbie.org a couple of months ago. They do not work for me, nor can I explain why they are the way they are. They seem to work for others with a similar problem though. 2) I cannot mount audio cd's anymore. I can play them through gtcd, I just cannot rip them.. The mount command tells me that I got a bad fs type or there are too many mounted filesystems. I can mount normal data cd's easily enough.. Also, what is a good strategy to follow while compiling a kernel? Is it better to make as many modules as possible or the other way round? Are there any particular features which would be better off as part of the kernel image rather than as modules? Currently, I have compiled very few features as modules. Hello All, I m using COMPAQ's DL320 server.'ve installed RHL7.2 with apache1.3.26,php4.2.2,freetds0.53 and Oracle8i. Php4.2.2 is installed for odbc,oracle,mysql,postgres,apache. But server has one problem.When m/c get rebooted after some days uptime,it doesnot bring eth0 up by stating that other host is having same ip. so,i have to change ip in eth0's ifconfig file.then only it comes up on network. so,what cud be the problem??? i think there's something wrong with NIC.bad NIC which doesnot release ip. or some network drivers problem?? yes. This was covered. DESCRIPTION AbsoluteTelnet, SecureCRT, Entunnel, SecureFx, and PuTTY do not properly scrub memory allowing an attacker with access to memory or a memory dump to retrieve authentication information. When connected via SSH2, an attacker can search memory or a memory dump for logon credentials. Passwords transmitted by PuTTY can be found by searching for the second occurrence of the string "password:". The user's password is stored in plaintext shortly after this string. Passwords transmitted by SecureCRT can be found by searching for the string "ssh-connection". The logon and password is stored in plaintext on the respective sides of this keyword. Passwords transmitted by AbsoluteTelnet can be found by searching for the first occurrence of the string "Password", that lies in a segment of read/write memory. The logon and password is stored in plaintext on the respective sides of this keyword. III. ANALYSIS An attacker able to ascertain a target user's memory dump will be able to recover passwords for remote systems. This is of special concern in shared environments. IV. 2 minor problems after kernel recompilation..

Hi, This is my first post to this mailing list although I have been lurking for a couple of months... I am facing 2 problems with my GNU/Linux box (Redhat 7.2, Kernel 2.4.19) since I installed the 2.4.19 kernel a couple of months ago.. 1) My system does not turn off automatically after issuing the powerdown command.. I have to turn it of manually. Earlier, with the RH 7.2 default kernel (2.4.7-10), the power would switch off automatically. Here are the how the relevant variables are set : CONFIG_PM=y CONFIG_APM=m # CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE=y CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE=y # CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT=y CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS=y # CONFIG_APM_REAL_MODE_POWER_OFF is not set I got these settings from linuxnewbie.org a couple of months ago. They do not work for me, nor can I explain why they are the way they are. They seem to work for others with a similar problem though. 2) I cannot mount audio cd's anymore. I can play them through gtcd, I just cannot rip them.. The mount command tells me that I got a bad fs type or there are too many mounted filesystems. I can mount normal data cd's easily enough.. Also, what is a good strategy to follow while compiling a kernel? Is it better to make as many modules as possible or the other way round? Are there any particular features which would be better off as part of the kernel image rather than as modules? Currently, I have compiled very few features as modules. Hi all Whenever i log on to SUn os 5.2 or solaris i always face 1 problem : when i open a file using 'vi' editor, then it gets opened as in linux but, when i try to right something using 'Esc i' then <-- BSpace and delete button do not work as in linux and put some unnecessary characters at start of prceding line. Hi This can be done thru a bandwidth shapping in your router if your router supporting bandwidth shapping module, I think ciscos all above 1700 series supports bandwidth shapping or u can do it thru IPtables in Linux 7.3. But u cant control bandwidth given to a particular user, controls can be done thru services they use. The speed of the propagation can be attributed to the attack method and simplicity of the code. Redhat garbled text

Greetings, Have any of you found a solution for the garbled text of Redhat 8.0. The ncurses library seems to be the problem - I am not sure though. For those who do not use RH 8.0, the problem is as follows, the display of most of the programs like ntsysv, cenetericq and various others is not aligned properly on the screen, also the screen is not refereshed when some changes are made and some new content is written above the old content on the screen. COMPASS 2003, being organised at the Netaji Indoor Stadium by the Computer Association of Eastern India, will see the congregation of over 100 companies, but it's the presentations by the Linux users group that promises to be riveting fare. "We will use this opportunity to introduce Kolkata to the GNU/Linux and Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS), and demonstrate and educate that they can be a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows and proprietary software," a spokesman of the Linux users group said. Microsoft, on the other hand, says a study has concluded that in the long run, the cost of systems running Linux as operating system would be "considerably higher" than ones running on Microsoft platforms. "This year the fair, being sponsored by Seagate, will be different in that we will have a focussed event for software developers, resellers and service companies," the fair's chairman B. Hari told IANS. "We have new products in hardware, software and services that will be showcased in the four-day event. The fair will hold a special programme for the channels to discuss the challenges in the market place and on policies of large distribution companies," Hari said. COMPASS generates good business every year, its organisers claimed. Hari said last year the fair generated enquiries worth Rs.2 billion and "80 percent of that converted into actual sales over a period of time". He said this year the fair is expected to generate business worth Rs.2.8 billion. The fair is being held at two venues, the Netaji indoor stadium and Sangam Hall, in view of larger participation this year. This trend has been changing slowly, as more and more processing power is available to the AI module in games. Game-developers have started looking in the direction of academic research and have tried to duplicate their success in fields like graphics, where games are state-of-the-art in terms of algorithms and technologies. In this seminar we discuss some of the initial attempts and problems being faced by developers. We also briefly explore the academic techniques which have been exploited in games and the need for game AI to be different, at least in the near future. About the Speaker: Amit Rao is currently working at NCST as Visiting Software Engineer in the Graphics Division. He is passionate about games in both the player and the programmer sense. He is working on developing a robust game engine for NCST, which is capable of pumping out world class content. His large-scale professional plans have always revolved around games and game design, and so he has a permanent unshakeable belief that this is the right field for him to be in. Introduction: Several months ago, GOBBLES Security was recruited by the RIAA (riaa.org) to invent, create, and finally deploy the future of antipiracy tools. We focused on creating virii/worm hybrids to infect and spread over p2p nets. Until we became RIAA contracters, the best they could do was to passively monitor traffic. Our contributions to the RIAA have given them the power to actively control the majority of hosts using these networks. We focused our research on vulnerabilities in audio and video players. The idea was to come up with holes in various programs, so that we could spread malicious media through the p2p networks, and gain access to the host when the media was viewed. During our research, we auditted and developed our hydra for the following media tools: mplayer (www.mplayerhq.org) WinAMP (www.winamp.com) Windows Media Player (www.microsoft.com) xine (xine.sourceforge.net) mpg123 (www.mpg123.de) xmms (www.xmms.org) After developing robust exploits for each, we presented this first part of our research to the RIAA. They were pleased, and approved us to continue to phase two of the project -- development of the mechanism by which the infection will spread. It took us about a month to develop the complex hydra, and another month to bring it up to the standards of excellence that the RIAA demanded of us. In the end, we submitted them what is perhaps the most sophisticated tool for compromising millions of computers in moments. Our system works by first infecting a single host. It then fingerprints a connecting host on the p2p network via passive traffic analysis, and determines what the best possible method of infection for that host would be. Then, the proper search results are sent back to the "victim" (not the hard-working artists who p2p technology rapes, and the RIAA protects). The user will then (hopefully) download the infected media file off the RIAA server, and later play it on their own machine. When the player is exploited, a few things happen. First, all p2p-serving software on the machine is infected, which will allow it to infect other hosts on the p2p network. Next, all media on the machine is cataloged, and the full list is sent back to the RIAA headquarters (through specially crafted requests over the p2p networks), where it is added to their records and stored until a later time, when it can be used as evidence in criminal proceedings against those criminals who think it's OK to break the law. Our software worked better than even we hoped, and current reports indicate that nearly 95% of all p2p-participating hosts are now infected with the software that we developed for the RIAA. Things to keep in mind: 1) If you participate in illegal file-sharing networks, your computer now belongs to the RIAA. 2) Your BlackIce Defender(tm) firewall will not help you. 3) Snort, RealSecure, Dragon, NFR, and all that other crap cannot detect this attack, or this type of attack. 4) Don't fuck with the RIAA again, scriptkids. 5) We have our own private version of this hydra actively infecting p2p users, and building one giant ddosnet. Due to our NDA with the RIAA, we are unable to give out any other details concerning the technology that we developed for them, or the details on any of the bugs that are exploited in our hydra. Reg. Squid

Hi friends, I have installed Squid on my machine and changed the configurations. I am able to browse from the machine which I had installed squid by seting the browser to the proxy address. However, I am not able to browse from other machines which is connected with network. The message coming on screen is access denied at present for the Url... contact your service provider root. Please advice me what are the settings to be changed in access control part in squid.conf. My network IP are of class C type starting from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254. Regards, Vinod.

I am not so concerned that people raise this question *on* a mailing list. What is worrying however is that this question *is raised* at all by those who are positively disposed to Free/Libre and Open Source Software. Imagine talking about GNU/Linux (or, more often just 'Linux', the term popularised by the media, just like how it has converted the term 'hacker' into something negative) without talking about issues like freedom and the people (and their motivations) who started it all. There are some networks -- in India too -- which would like to pretend as if GNU doesn't exist, Richard Stallman comes out of some fictional book, and that Debian is a fiction of our imagination. Their argument is: we don't want politics. This (the claim of wanting to steer clear of 'politics') is, one could argue, a political stand in itself. By avoiding issues like freedom, just to make this campaign more palatable to business or the mainstream, we are taking a stand which has strong implications for everyone. Any newcomer to GNU/Linux out there wanting to get to know more about RMS, I would recommend reading his biography (Free As In Freedom: Richard Stallman's Crusade for Free Software). I'm not sure how RMS views this biography, because in the journalistic style, it tries to be less hagiographical, and in parts critical of RMS, the person and the leader of the Free Software Movement. Hi all, I was going through the mailing archive of some site and found the queries regarding blocking yahoo and msn messenger using iptable. There is a small script which I have written to block the yahoo,msn and rediff messenger using iptable. ILUG-Bom IRC Channel

Ilug-Bom now has it's own IRC channel. We are called #ilug-bom and are located on irc.freenode.net - Home of many popular open source projects' channels. To learn more about IRC go to http://www.irchelp.org. For the ignorant people, IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It's a medium which offers the opportunity of Real Time communication between a large number of entities - Basically, the biggest collection of chat rooms. mgetty compilation options

How do I find out whether the 'mgetty' binary installed from its rpm is compiled with -DAUTO_PPP or not? Or going further and generalizing, how do I find the flags that were used to compile a binary? I have configured my machine as a dialin server. Currently, mgetty accepts the username and then calls /bin/login to accept and authenticate the password from the peer. But I want pppd to authenticate the peer rather than /bin/login. So mgetty should call pppd rather than /bin/login. The file /etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.config has the option for doing this. But a comment in the file says that mgetty has to be compiled with -DAUTO_PPP option for it to work. I suspect that the currently installed mgetty binary isn't compiled with -DAUTO_PPP because even after enabling /AutoPPP/ in login.config, the remote client still gets a bash prompt after authenticating which indicates /bin/login being called. I read the installed mgetty documentation but it doesn't say anything about the AutoPPP option being used while compiling or not. -- Abhir Joshi http://education.vsnl.com/abhir/

But, that takes a long time to code and debug. Whereas, doing things in a more higher-level abstracted language makes development and deployment easier. So, basically the choice depends on the requirements. You might want to look at the different scripting languages available out there and decide which one to use. It's not very difficult to implement a solution like this one. Why, maybe you could try out the Korn Shell - it has support for regex, sockets and other goodies built-in! Nosferatu

I am trying to compare C and Java, based solely on my experience. What I meant is OS, if we all use/fix GNU/Linux as OS then do we really need Java? Because Java programs are slow and my experience is that C programs can be written faster than Java. Also as far as I know, Java is written in C too. Amish. P.S. I agree many would debate, so I say its my opinion, experience and belief.

my cdrom is giving problems?

i have a samsung 52x cdrom drive, which has recently started giving me problems it used 2 work fine with my previous rhl7.1 installation.now i use rhl7.3. whenever i try 2 use the "eject" option after right clicking the cdrom icon on the desktop, the hdd is accessed for some secs, then the cdrom light glows for some secs, but the cdrom tray doesn't open. the same thing happens even if i try 2 manually eject the cdrom tray by pressing the button below the cdrom tray. i don't seem 2 understand the problem. the cdrom drive is 2 yrs old, & i haven't done ne cd drive cleaning since. is it bcoz of this? also plz throw some light as 2 how do i clean the cdrom drive. -- Pradnyesh Sawant ( The Doubtfire ) Ph: 27703060 B.E.
