Compile problem for PHP with PostgreSQL

Hi All, I have strange problem. I am not able to compile Postgres support into PHP4.0.4pl1. I have compiled PostgreSQL 7.1.3. My system is Slackware 8.0 with Linux kernel 2.4.17. If I try to compile pgsql support statically into PHP module, this module refuses to load in to Apache (1.3.20). If I compile pgsql support as shared lib for php module it does not load and logs this warning PHP Warning: Unable to load dynamic library 'pgsql.so' - pgsql.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 PHP module loads ok in Apache but I don't get pgsql support. I have tried every thing. Even searched on PHP's mailing lists and tried all the solutions posted there... Pls help... Red Hat 7.2 Installation: Partitioning?????

HI EVERYBODY, Here is a very basic question (but I am really stuck!! :| ) I have been trying to install red hat 7.2 on a win98 machine. Everything goes fine until the partitioning screen comes up. I have a hdd of 37 gb and I have repartitioned it to 27+10 with FIPS and want to use the new 10 GB partition (win95 FAT32) for linux. When I choose automatic partitioning screen, it declines to do that (space not available). Next when I come to the manual partioning screen, I cant proceed their either. When I select the hard drive partition of my choice and try to add new partitions (root, swap and boot), I get the same errors, space not available. And it woulnd't let me proceed. Once I have done partitionless install with linux 7.0 on the same machine without having hard drive partitioned by fips. And it worked fine. Unfortunately, as it seems, Red Hat 7.2 doesnt support partitionless installations. Any comments, suggestions, advises, must do's, undo's?????????? CD ROM problems Kernel 2.4.7-10

I recently installed RH7.2 using Seascope disks. Initially due to non availability of GLIBC (proper version ) on CD 1 of 2, only a minimal install was possible. Later on I loaded the RPM's one by one. My CDROm drive Samsung CD writer RW 8.4.32 is recognised by the kernel, but when i try to mount the CDROm, I get a message /dev/cdrom improper device or device does not exist. I have the following line in lilo.conf append="hdc=ide-scsi" This used to work and still works on Caldera with kernel 2.4.2 (PCQuest CD's)loaded in another partition. My creative infra CDROM has conked off so this is the only drive currently available with me. The CDROM is shown when the system boots up after Lilo in RH7.2 Any ideas in getting it working. Really Strange...

Dear Linuxers... I am scraching my head since yesterday.... due to my carelessness my system's /var showed 100% usage.. I deleted some old log files and freed about 1 gb of disk space.. Now, even after this df showed 100% usage... Until I restarted the box... After restarting the system i got 1gb free space... what command can i use to get the above job done without restarting the whole system... regards lilo

"Error setting up inter-process communication for KDE. Message is: Could not read network connection list /root/.DCOPserver_<hostname>_:0 please check that dcopserver is running!" OK I had enough of Linux (period) I've been using Linux for almost 2 years now. After getting bored of Windows I decided to remove it from my PC.I was running only Red Hat Linux 7.1 when I had a major filesystem crash. I even lost some of important data. One of my friends suggested that 7.1 had a buggy kernel and I should switch to 6.2 I installed 6.2 and everything was fine until today... The boot process 'dropped me to a shell' and advised me to run fsck manually. I obliged. Out of the blue I got a truckload of messages telling me that something was wrong and that should it fix it ? Amazingly the only answer was yes.I continued pressing 'y' for about 5 mins and then the ordeal was over. I logged in just to find that my ncurses libraries had been deleted ! And horror of horrors: my entire rpm database was gone... I did not want any more surprises. Being frustrated I decided to give myself a break. I removed Linux and now I'm running good ol' Win 98 :-) Anyone reading this please keep in mind : Curse Windows , Hate Windows ,Kick Windows but never and I say *never* remove Windows. hi everyone, I was tryign to read/write bits to 0x378 I/O port, using the ioperm() system call. But this allows only the root to access. HOw do normal users access the port? i did read about SETUID(), but i dont really understand how it works for me ?? does anyone have any pointers on this ?? Also i am trying to uderstand how ot access using read and write. for that i would need to add the user as part of the group, which can access /dev/port. Hi! I get confused by the versioning system of Linux. I would like to know why the versions are so cryptic and not easy to remember and understand like in the Redmond. I guess the general rule is: Software whose version has many odd nos. ---> Bad ( o.k. not so good ;-) even nos.---> Good Am I right? Also I've read that the first version of Linux kernel was 0.1 Why 0.1 ??? when it could have been 1 or 1.0 or whatever Also I've seen that kernels have huge version nos. Just a note... I think it is more proper for people to prefix their subject line with key words like COMMERCIAL, ANNOUNCEMENT, etc. to give a straight idea as to what the post contains. If a couple of bits in your PDF get complemented, the PDF will no longer be readable. The same with text, and there is very little data loss. This is probably irrelevant here, but still. 5. It will stand the test of time much better. What happens when we come to a time when there are no pdf viewers available and the format is lost forever? Reading plain text takes only a knowledge of the character set in use. If that is lost, it won't be all that hard for a cryptanalyst to figure it out. Hi In the source code of some packages, I have seen 'for (;;)' where 'while (1)' could have done the job. Is it related to the efficiency of the code generated ? I have also seen that the a java decompiler generated 'for(;;)' from the bytecode which was compiled with 'while(true)'. CD writing trouble- SOS!

I'm using a Memorex CDRW-4224 to write some CDs.The process completes successfully, but when i try to mount them the CDs arent detected in the cdrom drive.I get a "no medium found" message. I'm at a loss to understand why this happens.The log shows nothing wrong except one message : "Warning: drive returns wrong startsec(0) using -150" I've managed to duplicate only one cd successfully using xcdroast, others are wasted.. Kernel Version and Driver installations

I was tying to install Linux on a real time system (via an external CD-ROM drive with DOS device driver only. So copy files to Hard disk using DOS and then install using the boot diskette. Linux 7.0 official RH pack was loaded. When we loaded the systems device drivers used for real time data acquisition using, we found tat the modules did not get installed due to incorrect kernel version. We had 2.2.16-22 and 2.2.12-18 was required. We got another version of driver for 2.4.2, I loaded the kernel from PCQ (july-Aug 2001) but the PCQ kernel was 2.4.2-2 and even this did not work. The message that I got was that the driver required kernel 2.4.2 while we had 2.4.2-2 installed. Why is this so? When drivers are made for one kernel version then why should it not work with a higher kernel version. Anand

An Indian group hopes to change that image with the Simputer, a device designed to bring portable computing and the information age to developing countries. The Simputer Trust, a group of individuals from the Indian Institute of Science, and Encore Software are behind the device. Vinay L. Deshpande, CEO of Encore, said the machine is expected to arrive in the second quarter. The finished product, which will run the Linux operating system, will be slightly larger than a Palm handheld but will operate as a simple portable computer. It will use 32MB of flash memory and 32MB of RAM. Other hardware features include a built-in modem, infrared port and USB port for connection with other devices. The interface comprises mainly icons and graphics on a 240-by-320-pixel touch screen. The device also supports text-to-speech capability and will be able to provide voice feedback in local languages, according to specifications provided by Encore Software. Sharp Electronics Singapore has been engaged to provide its monochrome and color LCDs, flash memory and smart cards for the Simputer. At a media briefing Friday, Encore said Sharp will also offer its engineering expertise to help with the development of the device. Sharp's Zaurus handheld, recently rereleased in the United States, also uses Linux. To use the Simputer, individuals will need to purchase a smart card to store personal information. Once inserted into the device, the card will provide access to private information, such as bank accounts. The Simputer will initially be available for government organizations. It will be targeted at businesses and consumers at a later date, Deshpande said. India will be one of the first countries where the product will be made available, he said. Bangalore, India-based Encore, which develops digital signal processor-based software and embedded systems, began the project two years ago, working on the idea of getting rural areas in India networked and connected to the Internet. The Simputer will be used in villages and districts so that small communities can share the device for various uses such as sending and receiving e-mail and carrying out banking transactions. I want to backup all the mails(header,body and attachments) going out through my mailserver.Can anybody tell me how to do it? Many "gurus" teaching new users about Linux make it look harder than it needs to be, and apparently fail to explain that yes, you can make PowerPoint-style presentations in Linux, you can view Web Pages that use Flash animation and other "glitz" features, and that you can manage all your files though simple "point, click, drag and drop" visual interfaces. Hi All, I want to create a Linux CD, which just contains only Apache Server as far as the Applications are concerned, and wish to remove all other applications like GNOME, SAMBA, KDE, GAMES, ... etc. from the CD. Also when I will use this CD to install, only Apache must be called for installtion and no other applications must be called. Can someone please guide to achieve this. Sendmail gives me a warning now, saying: Warning: .cf file is out of date: sendmail 8.11.6 supports version 9, .cf file is version 8 How do I regenerate it to match version 9 (without messing up my settings, masquerading rules, aliases, etc.)? FS bugs in kernel 2.4.x series

Hi, I remember there was some discussion going on here on FS bug in kernel 2.4.x. It was regarding root mount error where root block got corrupted. Somebody had reported that this bug exists in some of versions of kernel. If I remember the kernel versions were also specified. I searched the past archives of list but failed to find any such note. I had read the same on kernel.org too but it has disappeared from there too. So can anybody please tell me which kernel versions had the FS bug in kernel 2.4.x series. Where do I find any such notes of serious kernel errors? I searched on yahoo but didnt give me expected results. Thank you. Amish.

Internet through Cable

Anyone tried cable internet on linux? It seems you need some special (TM) software for access. And my cablewala doesn't support linux users because he doesn't have the software for linux nor is he interested in finding out. What next? I desperately want to switch to cable but won't go with windows just for that! Diskless linux clients

Hi, I have been successful in configuring Diskless Linux workstations using boot images from www.etherboot.org and precompiled kernels from www.ltsp.org . ltsp-core version 3.0.0. The diskless clients boots, loads its kernel via tftp, mounts root file system via NFS (from /opt/ltsp/i386 on the server) and gives either: 1) a telnet session to the server(The machine on which the root file system exists). 2) or a bash prompt. Is it possible to authenticate the user before he gets the bash prompt(from /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/passwd)? I tried to do this by putting the binaries of mingetty, bash and login from my redhat linux distro. into the ltsp root file system /opt/ltsp/i386/bin/bash, /opt/ltsp/i386/bin/login and /opt/ltsp/i386/sbin/mingetty. I also copied /lib/security and /etc/pam.d . Note that my Red Hat Linux system's kernel version is the same that ltsp-kernel package provides i.e. 2.4.9. I copied a couple of users from /etc/passwd on my system to /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/passwd file. After doing all this, I was successful in getting a login prompt but was unable to authenticate any user. What could be the problem?. I was not using shadow passwords. Then I also tried copying the shadow and group files from my linux box but no success. Please guide me as to what the problem could be. Squid Proxy triggering

I have installed Squid on Linux server and accessing the internet from a Win95 m/c. Now, whenever the modem installed on the Linux server gets disconnected I have to go & dial from the server. Instead, I to configure the proxy such that the moment open the browser from the Win 95 client, Squid should cause the PPP to dialout automatically without my intervention. Cyber Crime Investigation Cell

I've worked with the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell for more than a year now. I have helped them with tons and tons of cases of all kind;s from Child pornography and hacker to stalkers etc. I dont think people on this list should keep bashing the CCIC the police working with it have gone a long way to learn a lot about computer forensics. They had also been taught a lot from FBI who provided tons of material. The experts (except Flynn Baba) who work with the CCIC help the police with the technical part of the investigation apart from us atleast 3 computer security companies help the cyber crime cell at all times. Ok maybe the infrastructure the cops have is sad but thye work very hard and even stay late nights to catch people on IRC etc, You cant expect them to be computer experts they are cops and they handle the crime part of the investiagtion and are very good at doing what cops do. Also yes they do have linux running at the Cyber crime cell. On a dual boot machine and yes it is used (not by flynn baba, will make him a Eunuch: Ref: Philips Secnet review) . Also the website of the cyber crime cell is run free of cost by Net4India hosted and developed by them so if its computer security your worried about talk to net4india. When a Indian hacker hacked the site last time the cops had him in less than a week. Now comming to Flynn I know him for the last year and he is the WORST computer security expert I have ever meet if thats what you want to call him. I know for sure that he has NEVER ever written a book on computer seucirty he was a writter in StarDust. The Company he has formed as your google search found has shut down. To be truthful I find it insulting to even work with him. A security computer to him is one which has its Internet Cache deleted. I dont want to carry on with the flynn bashing even though I am beginning to enjoy it :) Just dont judge a cyber crime investiagtion cell by its Flynn :) If you ever are in any trouble or a cyber crime has been committed against you please go down to the CCCIC office at Commissioners Office opp Crawford Market. 1st floor of the building right in front of the main gate. Senior Inspector IM Zahid is the officer incharge btw, Some of the cops working there an API I think even went outof his was to train at NCST the comp security module I think. 4GB files in /lost+found

Hi, Yesterday I was forced to hard reboot my Linux and when it passed through e2fsck it showed errors in lots of inodes. After going through fsck(where all I did is choose default answer) when I checked lost+found there were around 1200 files of size 4GB(HD space is 8GB). 'ls -l' doesnt show type of the file(it shows '?' question mark). Now if I try to remove those files it says 'Operation not permitted'. I also tried 'chmod 644' but that too fails. So now what are theses files? How do I remove these files? lost+found also shows several block and character devices, I was unable to remove those too. Is there a separate command say 'rmnod' to remove such files? Also my harddisk is NOW showing 1GB free, as far as I knew it only had 200MB space left, does it mean I have lost the files? Can this happen? I was under impression that any unattached inodes go to lost+found. Also there can't be 800MB of data open at time of reboot that all get corrupted and lost. But suprisingly all daily operations seem to be working fine. So point is where did free space come from? What files were lost? How do I find? I am totally lost :-) Thanks for help. Amish. P.S. Kernel version is 2.2.17 and I am using the machine since 2 yrs and is reasonably stable.

I m having dos attack on my apache web server which is also simeltenously having our imap as well as pop3 server have checked with top it some times of the day gives more cpu consumption and by uptime I came to know that there are no. of active users goes up from 3 to 4 (average) to 20 or more after checking httpd logs I came to know that someone is asking for *.exe files from different ips we have a consaltunt but he says he doesnt have any solution for the timebeing he says to stop and restart the httpd service when it happens do u have any comments we are having dedicated connection and around 500+ email users please infrom me if there are any monitoring tools for sendmail /dos attack /apache which can be monitored in real time thanks Hiten. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Dear Luggers, Hi...2 all..... I m facing a problem for configuring 2 NIC for sharing my Internet Connection. Plz. find the complete problembelow. I m having 2 Machines. On one I m having Direct Cable Internet Connection...i.e. on Ethernet Technology. And that machine is having Linux 7.1 with Squid configured properly. I want to share that on 2-3 machines. All other machines having Win98. I want to set up its TCP/IP Configuration as Using DHCP Server and I want to make my first PC as DHCP Server for my Internal Network. For that matter I edited the file /etc/dhcpd.conf Its contents is as follows in /etc/dhcpd.conf subnet 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.10; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option broadcast-address 192.168.0.255; option routers 192.168.0.1; } subnet 202.131.99.81 netmask 255.255.255.0 { option broadcast-address 202.131.99.255; option routers 202.131.99.81; } And then I restart DHCP Service using "dhcpd -f" command. Then it has given me error as follows. Listening on Socket /etc/192.168.0.0 Sending on Socket /etc/192.168.0.0 No subnet declaration for eth0 (202.131.99.81) Please write a subnet declaration in your dhcpd.conf file for the network segment to which interface eth0 is attched. exiting. My Internet Service Provider has provided us some fixed IPs...I would like to mentioned that I already started Squid for Netsharing. After that I've provided all the machines IP address manually. And I can be able to browse the websites. But I want to make my Linux machine as DHCP server for my Internetwork. So, in above situation where the defect amy be left by me...???? Bad major or minor number

Distro RH6.2 (zoot i think) Mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /win results in unable to mount /dev/hda1 bad major or minor number ls -l /dev/hda shows major as 3 and minor as 0 (3, 1 in case of hda1) which afaik is correct. This is a 17gb disk on a machine with bios which can read only 8 gb. Exceept for the above problem linux occupying the upper 8gb works happily. Here's the situation: Net DSL Windowsbox LAN(dhcp) Linuxbox The LAN, naturally, has a 192.168.0.0 range of IPs (I think it's a class C). The DSL modem is connected to the Winbox on USB and the LAN is a 5-port hub supporting a windows network, with my Linux box (say hello to gort, folks) creeping in using dhcpd. The Linux box, and any box on the LAN, can access everything. I think the Net cannot access anything but the Windows box on the DSL modem (see <http://gort.cjb.net/>. That's the Winbox.). Now I need POP3 (and HTTP et al, if possible) access to the Linux box from the outside world. IP forwarding is enabled on the Winbox. What do I do now? Hi, Probably I shouldnt post this here but this looks to be best source for good crackers. :-). Just last sunday i was trying to figure out how cyberoam client encrypts password, but I failed :-). Here is sample file attached, u can open in Excel as tab sepatated file and 'text' formatting of all fields instead of general formatting. Basically first field is timestamp and then each of passwords character is replaced by 3 digit number based on some algorithm. There is one more key probably used and I dont know if it is related to adaptor address. In my case its 00:50:BA:8D:42:F4. This exists in all authentication requests.(see sample) The 3 digit number seems to change with time as its the only thing changing, rest known keys remaining the same. If somebody wants to reverse engineer the client I can send them the exe(setup too) if its legal to do so(is it?). Once algorithm is known, I will try to come up with Linux client as early as possible. Thanks. However imho RH is entitled to protect it's brand name and must take to court those who distribute RH copies as RH in an attempt to hijack it's brand equity. Chandra Narayanaswami's Lecture

I has gone to Candra Narayanaswami's lecture at TIFR today. He's the researcher from IBM wearable computing division who built the Linux powered watch. The talk was really good he explained stuff in good detail and showed a movie about the linux watch. He even passed a linux watch and the circuit inside the watch for everyone to see. The watch uses the Strong ARM processor by Cirus Logic it has 8 MB flash memory runs the 2.2 kernel with X11 R6 has a touch screen IRDA and RF interfaces for communication. the battery has hold up to 60 hours the coolest part of the watch was the 700 dpi Organic Light Emitting Display which is supposed to be the resolution of a laser printer the display is crytal clear and also saves power. nmap messages

hi, whenever i try the OS detection option of nmap, i get this message : sendto in send_tcp_raw: sendto(3, packet, 60, 0, ipaddr, 16) => Operation not permitted (where "ipaddr" is the target's ip address). As far as Vijay Mukhi is concerned, in todays Bombay Times someone asked him, "Why is it not possible to install two Operating Systems on the same hard disk ?" Hi philip, Feeling slightly disappointed that I didnt know about SecNet in time I would have loved to talk on the IPsec implementation I'm working on unlike FreeSwan I'm writing it on top of the new netfilter architecture ( > 2.4) so no recompiles of the kernel the entire IPSEC (ESP & AH) handling will be a single module and the ISAKMP daemon will be a userspace program. The only thing that really cheered me up was the Flynn Baba bashing :) I work with him on the Cyber Crime Cell as an advisor and I was pretty sick of him calling himself a network security specialist (I was suprised that he knew how to clear the IE cache ). Also I'm waiting around for my IBM linux programming contest results. Is there ANYONE ELSE ON THIS LIST who has taken part in the contest. (Known when the results r comming out ??) regards Vicky

Tiff image support in QT

Hi all, I am loading an image using QPixmap and successfully displaying the image in the client area of the application. But when I am working with TIF image, it is unable to load it in the QPixmap, TIFF format is not in the supported format list of QT, So when I searched, I got the following TWO options to support TIFF format in QT. First is QImageFormat's decoding procedure to install the new format. where you have to override DecoderFor, FormatName and Decode. Which I was unable to do, So any help in this case would be really appreciated. Secondly, I got the following code for defining the new format support. Which is crashing after the last line of the code. On one I m having Direct Cable Internet Connection...i.e. on Ethernet Technology. And that machine is having Linux 7.1 with Squid configured properly. I want to share that on 2-3 machines. Then it has given me error as follows. Listening on Socket /etc/192.168.0.0 Sending on Socket /etc/192.168.0.0 No subnet declaration for eth0 (202.131.99.81) Please write a subnet declaration in your dhcpd.conf file for the network segment to which interface eth0 is attched. exiting. My Internet Service Provider has provided us some fixed IPs...I would like to mentioned that I already started Squid for Netsharing. After that I've provided all the machines IP address manually. And I can be able to browse the websites. But I want to make my Linux machine as DHCP server for my Internetwork. So, in above situation where the defect amy be left by me...???? [OT] Preliminary report on SecNet 2001

I've been participating in the security and networking workshop at IITB for the last three days, and here's a little report on what's been happening there. There were lectures by our own Jaju. He spoke about different security attacks including IP spoofing, DoS, DNS spoofing, sniffing, session hijacking, etc. and demonstrated tools like nmap for port scanning. On the second day, Anil Gracias demonstrated how to analyse log files for patterns of probing and possible break ins. He demonstrated tools like snort, tripwire, and netsaint. Flynn Remedios - the advisor for the Mumbai police cyber crime cell - also spoke. He basically explained how to delete the history from Internet Explorer and how to give incorrect information when signing up for a yahoo account, and how he threatened yahoo.com with his influence with the Mumbai Police. He also told us a lot about his personal life and why he doesn't use Linux/Unix. Apparently, in 1991, when he was studying C/C++ under Vijay Mukhi, Mukhi said that Unix is for Eunuchs, and so from that day on he has been afraid to touch unix, possibly because he thinks it will make him one. My advice to anyone/any company who wants to hire him as a consultant. Just make sure you only consult him on how to walk around with one foot in your mouth. The third day was taken by Dr. Leena Chandran-Wadia, on SSL and the different kinds of message encryption/signing. Leena has an excellent command over the subject, and seemed to have done her homework not just on the subject, but also on the audience. In all, this was the best lecture of all. Mr. Ambrish Kumar took the next lecture on IPSec, touching on implementations in windows and linux. There were some doubts as to whether the linux kernel has built in IPSec compatibility or if it requires a recompile. Maybe someone on the list can shed some light on this. IPSec seems a very interesting topic, and those who have the opportunity should try it out. There's one more day to go for the workshop, I'll keep you'll posted. OT- Win NT security evaluation

I've been studying aspects of Windows NT security, and I came across an interesting bit of information which i thought of sharing... There is a body called National Computer Security Center in the US Dept of Defense.They guys basically evaluate the security of computer systems and certify a _particular_configuration at a certain level from A to D, where A is the highest level of security. It seems that Windows NT was certified at C2 level on a Compaq ProLiant 2000, running Version 3.51 of NT, as per the Orange Book Now, surprise surprise, the Orange Book is for standalone systems only! Windows NT was never evaluated on the Red Book,which provides an interpretation of the security criteria for networked systems!!! hiee previously i was able to get mails to root when every any process copmpletes or server start or shutdown but after i clean reinstalled server with minimum options i m able to send mail thru mail command but unable to get messages in root mail box of system processes i installed sendmail also but this is the prob before i was able to get mails in root mail box i use to type "mail -f /var/spool/mail/root" to read mails right now i m getting mails but not of server process only thru users i need to get mails of server process also in root mail box like before what could be the solution? Any idea how I can auto indent (using cindent) from the command line? I'm writing a shell script to indent all my source files. This is the core of it: for f in $@; do vim -f $f +"set tw:80" +"set ts:4" +"set sw:4" \ +"set cindent" \ # ... now what? +"wq" done Now I want to add the command for indenting. The problem is that '=' won't work here (there's nothing like ':,%='). I can specify a range, but what command to apply to the range? One thing is this - ':,% !indent' - will indent a C file, but I really need this for Java (and the vim built-in indent, the = command, works perfectly for Java). Any ideas? How do people auto indent their Java/Perl files _from the command line_ (without manually doing gg=G in Vim for each file)? Manish

Nautilus and gnome-vfs

I recently installed Nautilus on my Debian woody system ... but it seems to be missing a few pieces. It cannot render html pages on its own. Clicking on Help->User Manual, the html source of the page gets displayed instead of being renderred correctly. Here are the error messages that Nautilus keeps throwing up: ** WARNING **: Can't find description even for "x-directory/normal". This probably means that your gnome-vfs.keys file is in the wrong place or isn't being found for some other reason. ** WARNING **: No description found for mime type "text/html" (file is "/"), please tell the gnome-vfs mailing list. And similar warnings for other mime types ... I checked for /usr/share/mime-info/gnome-vfs.keys and it is in the right place. Since I am using Debian, I am pretty sure that apt has taken care of all dependencies ... What could have gone wrong??? Dear friends, While going thru' the chapter of Pipes & Redirection from the *The Unix Programming Environment* (the famous yellow book by Kerninghan, et al) I read that when we use redirection, the system uses some temporary files to accomplish the task. Whereas by using pipes, the overhead of temp. files can be avoided. Can someone throw some more light on it? Like, why shud there be requirement of temporary files, where are those temp. file stored? I tried to find some more details on it in the docs as well as on the net, but the search wasn't very much fruitful. Thanks in advance. looking for reiser fs

hello there, i am in the process of patching my kernel. however the patch for 2.4.11 at kernel.org has dont-use appended to its name, y is that?? can i just patch 2.4.11 and then patch with 12 and so on and get away with it ? Reposting the Welcome message that contains posting guidelines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to the GNU/Linux User Group of Bombay (ilug-bom)! Now that you are a member you can read and post mails to the group. The messages have to be related to propogating, using, trouble-shooting, bug-fixing, of GNU/Linux operating system. Feature comparision of other operating systems and distributions is allowed, but restrain from BASHING. GNU/Linux is possibly the most friendly operating system, and hence as users of the OS let us all maintain a FRIENDLY tone to our conversations on the list. YOU are the best judge to determine the relevance or irrelevance of your post to GNU/Linux, and therefore you are responsible for your postings. Since this is not a moderated list, please read the guidelines before posting mails to the list. The sole functioning of this list is based on the self disciplinary nature of its users. ILUG-Bom Mailing List participation Guidelines ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 1. Keep paragraphs and messages short and to the point. See that what you are writing is useful to the mailing list. If not, send it as a private message to the person. (Note that by default the mails go to the LIST) Please change the sender address appropriately before sending a personal mail. 2. When quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly applicable to your reply. Don't let your mailing software automatically quote the entire body of messages you are replying to when it's not necessary. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the minimum necessary to provide context for your reply. Nobody likes reading a long message in quotes for the third or fourth time, only to be followed by a one line response: "Yeah, me too." Messages larger than 10k will not be posted immediately. Such messages will need the list admins approval. 3. Focus on one subject per message and always include a pertinent subject title for the message, that way the user can locate the message quickly. Also please include a suitable header in case of Commercial / Offtopic mails. 4. Capitalize words only to highlight an important point or to distinguish a title or heading. Capitalizing whole words that are not titles is generally termed as SHOUTING! *Asterisks* surrounding a word can be used to make a stronger point. Use the underscore symbol before and after the title of a book, i.e. _Linux Configuration And Installation_ 5. Limit line length to approximately 65-70 characters and avoid control characters. 6. NEVER send chain letters to the mailing list. A mail simultaneously sent to more than 10 users will not reach the list. This is to eliminate possible spammers/bulk mailers to reach the list. 7. Be careful when using sarcasm and humor. Without face to face communications your joke may be viewed as criticism. When being humorous, use emoticons (smiley's) to express humor. (tilt your head to the left to see the emoticon smile) :-) = happy face for humor. 8. If a mail has offended you personally, please send a private message to the person expressing how you feel, instead of sending it to the mailing list. 9. Please remember that we have both male and female members. No gender abuse is allowed on the list, and do not include any gender specific slang in your posts. 10. Acronyms can be used to abbreviate when possible, however messages that are filled with acronyms can be confusing and annoying to the reader. Examples: IMHO = in my humble/honest opinion FYI = for your information BTW = by the way Flame = antagonistic criticism. http://www.jargon.org for more such acronymns. 11. Please provide URL's to articles wherever possible. Avoid cutting and pasting whole articles especially considering the fact that all may not be interested. In any case your posting maynot be more than 10k. Occassionally if you may have to send such a mail, post it, it will reach the members after the list admin approves it. 12. When using the mailing list for commercial purpose, please prefix the subject line with "COMMERCIAL". 13. Please *read all your mails before replying* to a mail. Probably someone has already answered to the mail. 14. Remember that most of the people are paying by the minute for their internet access. Hence please do not waste bandwidth. 15. Any violation to the above will be given a warning. 5 such warnings and the subscriber will be suspended from the mailing list for 15 days. Blocking telnet on a specified condition

I want to know how I can block telnet access to my machine _when_a_specified_condition_is_true_. I have a lot of people telnetting to my m/c (in office) and then they run some heavy processes. As per the rules and requirements of the project, I'm not supposed to block telnet access completely. But under certain circumstances, I can block telnet access. The "certain circumstances" can be a set of rules. For example, if load average (w|head -1|cut -f3 -d,) is greater than some limit, or if the amount of free memory (free|tail -1|tr -s ' '|cut -f4 -d' ') falls below some limit, or something like that. I'm clueless, so... please help. Manish -- Abandon the search for Truth; settle for a good fantasy.

I;ve been having problems writing cds on win98, so i was searching the support pages... kppp user access problems...

I have Red Hat 7.1 installed on my system. I use a Motorola SM56 internal modem. I have been trying to configure kppp for use by users other than the root on my system for the last few days. I can use the rp3 dialer as a normal user, but not kppp. The problem is : when I use kppp as a user, it is not able to open the modem. The error message on quering the modem being "sorry, can't open modem". the device i use is /dev/modem, which points to /dev/sm56. i have configured kppp for allowing users to dial out ( by creating kppp.allow in /etc ). When this didn't work, I tried setting the UID bit in pppd, but this did not solve my problem either. I am able to use kppp when logged in as root - i.e, the modem responds to the query modem command, and I can connect. Another thing though is that when logged in as root and while using kppp, the modem responds only to the /dev/modem device, it gives the error " modem is busy " when device is set as /dev/ttyS3. ( The modem is connected at COM4 ) As far as the permissions are concerned, all users have read and write access to the modem driver file. how do I get kppp to work when logged in as a user ? Rohit.
