Hello friends, Applying the right shift operator in c to a number and shifting it right by a single digit is equivalent to dividing that numer by 2.But if the number is negative then it is not equivalent.how come? please give me information about the books in which i can find an explaination. [OT] Porting Linux GCC code to windows

Hi, Is there a easy solution to port GCC code to windows? Can it be done in VC++ without much change in the code? I tried DJGPP, but its missing few API's(rather functions), like message queues etc. Anyone have an idea? Amish. P.S. lots of C related questions are being put up recently. Is it allowed here? ;-)

Hi Shahazad, Sorry that I didn't replied promptly(..I was offline for three days). You have to enable routing on the server.(If you are using linuxconf for configuration then you can do it by checking the checkbox in the Routing/Gateways option). You really don't have to enable ip_forwarding. The dns of the win98 client will be the ip of your proxy server(If you are running nameserver on the same machine and if you are not then the dns ip's provided by your ISP will work fine.) So in any case the dns order will be the proxyserver IP followed by the IPs provided by the ISP. Reply back if have any relative problem. I recently upgraded to the PCQ Linux 7.1 distribution. When I typed "startx" at the command line, the X server could not start. Installation Problem - Sun Solaris 8

Hi ! First of all, this is a dedicated Linux group... but with so many Unix gurus, with lots of hope I'm posting this SMS (Save My Soul)... I have 20 X 2 HDDs... I installed Win2K on first on a dual boot basis with Lin 7.1 (the PCQ one - I guess youv'e got the same)... I left 1 GB as FAT16 for sharing the data between the two... The second HDD is lying idle... I tried installing Sun Solaris 8 on the 2nd HDD... on the beginning of the intallation itself (before scanning for hardware devices), it returned this error : ----------------- Warning : ACPI Tables not in Reclaim Memory (next screen) Warning : Resource Conflict - both devices are added Non - ACPI device : PNP0C01 Memory : 9FC00 - 9FFFF, FEE0000-FEF7FFF, FEF8000-FEFFFFF, FEC0000-FEDFFFF, FFF00000-FFFFFFF ACPI device : PNP0C01 Memory : 9FC00-9FFFF, E0000-EFFFF, 40FFC00-FEFFFF -------------- After this, all the hardware devices are scanned and no conflict sign is marked against each device found... it proceeds as usual and comes at the screen where it's about to start the installation with the option "Solaris Jumpstart" after which it's supposed to show the starting dialog box of the installation... but the screen goes white with a stationery cursor blinking at the top and the keyboard stops responding... Strangely, Linux or Windows do not report any such conflict and moreover, Solaris 7 itself did'nt give any such error and got installed normally... In the BIOS the ACPI setting has value S1 (which as the BIOS help consumes more power but is safe...) I tried after changing it to S3, but with same outcome... I'll be grateful it you guys can shed some light on this... hi i am using sendmail with fetchmail with procmail and pine......for my mail system on my linux box. 1.> Inspired by Philip's SMTP howto....i tried the following: i telnetted the port 25 on localhost......and tried to mail a message to my login....that's "abhije" now,i understand that the sendmail daemon identifies me as abhije@localhost(when i telnet the port 25)-- i get "IDENT:abhije@localhost.localdomain" as part of the response to HELO. when i say...... MAIL FROM:someone@some.other.domain ....it responds that the sender's address should resolve.....what does that mean??? i thought because it sends mail ......it should accept all sender addresses!!! At the same time.....if i say MAIL FROM:some_other_login_on_my_linuxbox@localhost the mail is sent....even if "some_other_login_on_my_linuxbox" knows nothing about it!!! my argument is that if it knows that i am abhije@localhost...and hence does not accept someone@some.other.domain....how does it accept mail from some_other_login??? i am new to sendmail..and smtp..could somebody help???? i know i could use something less scarier than sendmail.....but i need to know what's happening here...... 2.> Also is there some other mail client that has the address book facility???....i just need a break from pine..... 3.>I also have a yahoo inbox.....but the yahoo server doesn't flush the mail when polled!!!! could somebody explain that???? Unable to Install Dat Drive

Dear All, I plugged an External HP DAT drive into redhat linux 6.2 box on Adaptec SCSI Controller. After restarting the server I used dmesg to see whether SCSI card and drive are detected .. but could not find it there. Kudzu was able to detect the Card and the hwconf shows the entries as below. class: SCSI bus: PCI detached: 0 driver: aic7xxx desc: "Adaptec|AHA-2940U2/W" vendorId: 9005 deviceId: 0010 pciType: 1 After rebooting the computer again I could not find st0 in dmesg. The SCSI Configuration utility was able to detect the DAT Drive SCSI Controller ID:7 and DAT Drv ID:8. Can somebody pls help me to configure this thing. Regards lilo

Event based sounds in Windowmaker

Hi all, I've just switched from KDE to Windowmaker as my defualt windowmanager. Excellent windowmanager. I face only one problem. I'm not being able to set event based sounds in the Wmaker, similar to what we get in KDE and Windows. There was a button for sounds in wmakerprefs, but I still do not hear any sound. hi luggers, I'm having a problem wiith installing windows on my linux box. Whenever I try to install win 98 the installation process gives me this error : " Fault in MSDOS extender" and prints out the values of some registers. I have assigned hda1 & hda5 to windows. Hi ! Any idea from where I can download system commander 2000 ( "for free")..?? I have a Win 2000 and Linux Dual Boot (Disk a) + Sun Solaris (Disk b - intend to install)... Hey, which mail servers do you guys suggest one should use? I have heard good things about qmail, but it requires a static ip. Exim isnt very popular and sendmail is a tad bit scary for me... anyone else got any suggestions? It gives you a good idea of the current traffic and also weekly, monthly etc. I right now don't have the urls, but mrtg search in google will lead you to the right location. Hello everybody, I'm trying to install and configure the VPN network on my LAN. My VPN server is on Linux machine(kernel 2.4.2). I am using pptpd (http://poptop.lineo.com/) for this. I want to configure the n/w as Linux/Win<-->Linux VPN<->Internet<->Linux VPN<--Linux/Win Client Server Server Client but just for the begining I installed only one server(kernel 2.4.2 with pptpd) and on Win98 client trying to connect it. Linux VPN Server<----->Win98 client 192.168.0.32 192.168.0.0.112 But I'm not able connect.Both the machines are on the same LAN(using simple hubs not switches).The error I'm getting as below. /usr/sbin/pppd: The remote system is required to authenticate itself /usr/sbin/pppd: but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to do so. /usr/sbin/pppd: (None of the available passwords would let it use an IP address.) Setup PAP / CHAP secrets or try noauth switch to pppd. Or put following lines in /etc/ppp/peers/vpn --- noauth name vpn --- and call pppd with argument 'call vpn' read man pppd for details. Most importantly, you have to do some calculations regarding how much space to be alloted to each user. 5 branches and 60 per branch i.e max 350 users including misc. accounts. Thats not much. Partition /home and keep the max space on this partition so that future need may also suffice. Hi All, I am checking for the data transfer over particular interface. ifconfig reports the following eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:90:77:2E:88:3E inet addr:202.54.1.30 Bcast:202.54.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:38272865 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:454 TX packets:35874542 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:233 collisions:2018238 txqueuelen:100 Interrupt:11 Base address:0x2000 How do i know the data transfered in bytes? AFAIK, you can't ... unless someone decides to write a utility which will do just that. The best way is to create an rpm out of the tarball - it's rather straightforward once you get the hang of how to create a spec-file. The only hard part is creating the list of files in it, which specifies what goes into the package. But that can be done by inspecting the output of "make -n install" in the tarball. Maybe it is possible to use the rpm development library to write an app that can directly modify the rpm database? It could take a spec file as input and use the info to update the database ... maybe the library has a perl module as well ... What began as a dream for scientists, researchers and artists, has become a nightmare for the knights in geek's clothing. One of the more potent weapons at the disposal of these knights is the firewall. Its etymological roots unknown, the current usage stems from Steve Bellovin's email to Phil Karn regarding some security device. The first recorded usage in print is in Stafford and Garfinkel's book on Practical UNIX Security, published in 1990. Telling rpm what is installed

How do I tell rpm that I have installed some packages from tgz? It refuses to install software that requires these files. With rpm, I can use nodeps, but with redcarpet, I cannot. Hello Automation fans, The link on browser SCADA did not work on Netscape 4.77 and requires IE5.5 or Netscape 6. There was some problem with IE as nested ID's were probably not supported. This has been Corrected using a different logic, which has also speded up operations. However older browsers may not be suporting 'getElementById' command. Anand

Since the tutorials use a lot of images, using a Frame reduces Programming time. Secondly on downloads of a page, only a part of the actual page is downloaded from the internet, thereby saving on bandwidth. On trying with the above version of Lynx which is text based, I found that I could navigate further by selecting bottom frame but was stuck ahead as the <a href="#" onClick="top.location='karnalawebsite/index.html'"> command was not supported. The display of the message indicates that the browser does not support frames in the conventional way. try using Netscape 4.77 which is given free with most Distro's But Mozilla 0.7 or Netscape 6 are recommended as they give the best results. Please note that after the discussion at the Online meet in August, I saved a lot of images in PNG format, and neither Netscape 4.77, nor IE5.5 provide proper support for PNG format. In IE5.5 and Netscape 4.77, the transparencies on the images appear as grey or white patches. This is a totally graphic intensive site which requires a browser capable of displaying graphics. Sorry my earlier prob was not defined properly So I am sending the error again. I guess my dial up connection died down when i tried previously. the actual problem sounds like this.................. 2 messages for goldwyn_r at pop.softhome.net (8132 octets). reading message 1 of 2 (3711 octets) .fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed fetchmail: can't raise the listener; falling back to $procmail -d %T..sh: -d: command not found fetchmail: MDA exited abnormally or returned nonzero status not flushed reading message 2 of 2 (4421 octets) ....sh: -d: command not found Please note that it works perfectly fine with a MUA(Mail User Agent) like KMail. howeevr I am not keen on doin gthis as there are quite a few people worin gon this system and i want mail of eveyone to be downloaded in one connection and distributed accordingly. Procmail is also installed. Another question. I am in bash shell why is it showing sh for errors?? Sorry for the trouble, and thanx again for the help. Goldwyn :o)

Using Two gateways

Hi luggers, Is it possible to use two gateways, one from a fixed ip provider (hathway) on my eth1 and the other from dial-up (vsnl) on my ppp0 (modem) Using hathway, i can browse better, but download of mails is painfully slow. Using vsnl dial-up, i am able download mails, but browsing is very slow. Moreover if i use vsnl for browsing, it slows my mail download. Right now i have to manually change the gateway (using linuxconf), and then connect to vsnl. After downloading the mails, i disconnect and switch to hathway. I tried man route to change the routing rules manually, but it does not work. route add gw 202.88.136.1 Nm 0.0.0.0 dev eth1 Suggestions please Noel. Hi All, I am configuring samba server on linux PCQuest 7.1 based on redhat. My smb.conf goes like this ---- [global] ...... ....... guest ok = yes [data] guest ok = yes .......some more lines............ I think by configuring like this anybody should be able to see the linux server on windows domain and see the contents without asking for login and password. I am able to see the server in network neighbourhood but am not able to see "data" in it. It is asking for login and password. Hi, One of our PC with 8GB HD, 64MB RAM, 52X CD-ROM Drive, is having two partitions of 4GB each. One partitions has Windows 2000, & the other Linux 6.1. When I type startx at the command prompt, it will take too much time to start the xwindows & once it starts, it will take too much time to execute even simple commands. Folks, (Yeah, I know I should have used a more "meaningful subject" '-) My 2 HDD's have got some strange ailment (power surge?) and are in their death throes. Soon I may be left up the room without the paddle... err the PC. What I want to know is, is it possible to have a bootable CD with linux which I can use when them spinners die on me. I have already begged and borrowed these two from my friends, I have no hope for other. All I need is a minimal system which runs CMUCL + Emacs (+ ilisp). If I can have X running with a browser it will be truly wonderful. But how does one deal with all the files which get written automatically? the error records, the /var files, etc? RAMDisk? Can any (good Samaritan) with a CD-Writer, do me a huge favour and create this CD for me? And if the good Samaritan with the CD-Writer does not know how to do it, can other good Samaritans without CD-Writers help him (and me) out? The other option would be a bootable floppy. Encryption program

Wireless network

How about a wireless network for our LUG? I would say we use ipv6 addresses. From preliminary enquiries I have made, we should be able to setup a 802.11b MAN without much interference, with pretty nominal license fees of Rs 3000/yr/machine. There will be a slightly higher initial cost of 802.11b wireless modems, but I think that we can build our own for a much lower cost (Someone please check this by actually going to Lamington Road, my estimate is around 5K Rs). If Dr. Nagurjana will permit us, we can hook this network to the internet through the TIFR leased line. The VSNL 2M port costs ~ Rs.6 lakh/yr. And maybe we can get in a couple of other companies to allow us to share their leased lines so the LUG is multihomed. If there are a hundred interested people, then the running cost is very low (~ Rs. 1000/mth for a wireless network hooked up at 11mbps). Anyone interested? Also, could someone contact the local dept to Telecom and ask them for the exact rules. This should be a fun project. Okay, here's the full story. Ximian requires X4.0.x, and won't work with X4.1.x. kernels 2.4.8 and up don't support X4.0.x, only X4.1.x. To get support for X4.0.x in your new kernel, download drm-4.0.x.tar.bz2 and use it instead of the drm directory under your source tree. I've figured out the problem of why X 4.0.3 doesn't work with 2.4.9. In kernel 2.4.8pre6 and 7, support for X4.0 was dropped. It now only supports X4.1 Waaaa! Hi, Threads on Linux are a lot different from other OSes. 1) Linux threads are NOT kernel level threads but user level threads. That means while the thread is running in a multithreaded program, the kernel DOES NOT know whether a process is running or a thread is running. 2) Though linux supports a lot of mechanisms absolutely essential for multithreaded mechanisms like mutexes, spin locks; it still has a lot of problems as far as porting of multithreaded applications to Linux is concerned. 3) While other TRUE UNIXes like SUN SOLARIS, DEC UNIX, HPUX have support for recognizing mutexes across the process boundries, becoz of the abv mentioned limitations, Linux cannot recognize them. So multithreaded multiprocessing application written for Solaris might not compile on Linux. 4) SOme pointers on Linux threads: go to redhat.com and give query "PORTING SOLARIS THREADS". Kernel 2.4.9 and X

I have kernel 2.4.7 and 2.4.9, XFree86-4.0.3 Under 2.4.7, X runs perfectly, under 2.4.9, it refuses to start up, giving me a DMA allocation error. I get errors like this in my kernel log files: i810_ioremapfree:mappings] *ERROR* Attempt to free NULL pointer i810_ioremapfree:mappings] *ERROR* Excess frees: 153 frees, 2 allocs Absolutely no problems in 2.4.7. The only difference in kernel configs is that ftpfs is enabled in 2.4.9, but module sizes are very different in the two kernels. Ideas? Telnet Server

Hi guys! I just installed RHL 7.1 from the PCQ July CD. I had a "install everything" install. I created a user on the system and when I try to telnet to the m/c from Windoze, it says "Connect failed...". I then tried to telnet the m/c from the m/c itself. Same problem. I could not find inetd on the m/c. But I did find xinetd and ran it. In vain. I also tried to run telnetd, but it never ran. It said:- " telnetd: getpeername: Socket operation on non-socket " What could be the problem? Regards, Shailesh.

I seem to have messed up the locale settings on my machine ... here's what perl says when I try to run a script. perl: warning: Setting locale failed. perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: LANGUAGE = (unset), LC_ALL = (unset), LANG = "en_US.ISO-8859-9" are supported and installed on your system. perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C"). Similarly any GNOME application gives the following error Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library The original error messages had reported "english" as the locale setting. While experimenting I ended up with the above strings when I stuck an alias for "english" in /etc/locale.aliases. Where do I set up my language environemt? Do I need to restart bash and all? Problems with X (SiS 6215c and Sampo Monitor on SuSE 7.1)

Hi Luggers! One of my friends has SiS6215c Display Card with 2mb VRAM. He recently installed SuSE 7.1 in his machine. The monitor is Sampo AlphascanSV. The problem is that, the display card is not being detected. Hence he's not being able to run X. When he tried to run SaX, the SuSE X configurator, not even the initial screen comes up. Entire screen looks very garbled and after some time SaX exits. We tried xf86config, but we did not get any near as my freind has misplaced all of the Manuals and docs. We also tried our hands during installation, but that too went in vain. Anyone having similar configuration, please help. Hi You can also use '-d' command line option in which case the client doesnt go in background and writes debug information to stdout, stderr. Cyberoam client

Mitul, The original code was written by Amish Mehta. It worked in daemon mode off a console screen. You had to kill the process to stop it. I wrote a GTK based X client based on Amish's network code. However, since I do not have access to a Cyberoam account, I could not test it, except in simulation. Kishor Bhagwat has reported some problems with it. Anyway, I will e-mail you the code from home tonight. See if you can debug it and get it to work properly. If you want the original console daemon code, please ask Amish for the download details (I think he had a Yahoo download site, IIRC). Hi Guys! Thanks for your help, all of you. I got around the problem. It turned out to be a trivial solution. I forgot to set the firewall setting. I set that to allow telnet and bingo! Any idea how do I allow root access via telnet? Hi guys, recently in my company the sys admin has setup a squid proxy which is now restricting me to access yahoo messnger & other services like ftp, telnet etc. it is only allowing http on 8080. before my network didnt have a proxy & all requests were going to the router so i could directly ping or telnet any server as if i was directly connected to the net. but now as i am behind a proxy i cannot use any service like telnet or ftp .. & if i telnet to my local proxy & verify my login it logs me in but as no shell is provided i get disconnected .. basically all this is done so that we dont waste the bandwidth or misuse it... huh .. now what i want to do is i want to run yahoo messenger/icq, telnet, ftp .. i have used Kiwibox for chat but i want to connect through my usual yahoo messger/icq ..so how do i go about it ...? my office proxy is --> Squid/2.3.STABLE4 .. WinME *does not* have a real DOS mode, so LILO can't take you there. Your best bet now is to get a DOS/Win9x bootable floppy from somewhere and boot from it. Then you can get real DOS mode. Hello! I need small information about lilo.conf file... In our systems we have two partitions of hard disk, one is win'2000 and linux 6.2.. while booting lilo file it will ask two options (linux/dos) In one system we observed that there is no paswd setting in lilo.conf file. But still while booting into linux single, it is asking passwd. Using root authentication, when I opened that /etc/lilo.conf file I observed that there is no passwd setting in lilo.conf. Hi guys, I have installed RHL7.1 on my 8gb hdd with 6gb for linux and 2gb for win95/98. Now that i have completed the installation, how do i get to the 2gb partition which i have set aside and install win95/98. I can see the partition from linux as fat 16. But booting from floppy does not show this partition and i cannot even access it. Fdisk in dos (floppy boot) shows 8gb as a single partition while fdisk in linux shows all my partition /boot, swap, /root and fat16. I have not even formatted the fat16 partition. Can i format it as fat16 from linux? then probably i can install win95/98 and create a label in lilo. Anybody gone through this path before ? Regards, Noel. DOS recognizes only the first primary partition (don't know why does it not recognize the others) and also this partition needs to be set as the active partition. Also keep in mind that your LILO will be overwritten after Windoze 9x installs itself, so make a Linux bootable floppy before hand and/or copy the vmlinuz file on your Windoze partition. You can use loadlin.exe later to boot into Linux. Hi! Why not use GeForceIII or other such card? I heard somewhere that Matrox is slowly losing in competition and performance as well. I use a RivaTNT2 card and it has good performance, but I don't think it will satisfy the need for very high end graphics that you are looking for. Also, why are you going in for a branded PC? Try assembling your own PC. Its fun to build them and its very cheap as compared to branded ones. Also, try going in for a very good Motherboard too. FSB matters a lot. I would personally recommend an ASUS board. I myself use this board. A real performer. Alternatively, since you are putting in so much money, why not put some more and go for an SGI (Silicon Graphics) workstation? It rocks! I get this, right after it uncompresses: Invalid compressed format (err=1) and the system halts. Netscape 6.1 without Java?

I installed Netscape 6.1 on Linux, and Java seems to not work. It used to work on Netscape 4.x. I have configured my HP DeskJet 640c Series (USB) on PCQ RH 7.1 using HP 648 as my drivers in PCQ RH 7.1. While test printing it frm linux it prints correct, but when i try configuring frm my win98 clients it results in garbled prints. Can some1 pls suggest me what should i do? BTW, i have upgraded my orginal kernel 2.4.2 to 2.4.3.12, to get the USB port recognised of the printer. hello guys We have an ieee tech workshop in my college in October. I want to do a Linux workshop. While one of the things it would include is Linux installation, that is a little bit commonplace, i need your suggestions for 1) How to make the workshop interesting for newbies (Most wouldnt know any thing about Linux) 2) Which are the places where Linux can outdo Windows, more precisely how do i answer the question "Why is Linux better than Windows for me ?" when asked by an average joe who probably can get a pirated Windows CD as easily as a free Linux CD and who probably doesnt care about 99.99% uptime except that he doesnt like the frequent crashes on his windows machine. theres still time for the worskshop, its in october so do drop in suggestions even if they strike u after a few days. thanks bye aarjav __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Possible spam hole in mail servers

Please try this on your mail server. I have already tried it on many servers, including postfix and sendmail. All are vulnerable. telnet mailhost 25 helo hostname mail from: <> rcpt to: user@mailhost data ... the important things are - 1. the mail from address is blank: <> 2. the rcpt to addresses are within the mail servers domains so relay is not a problem This allows spammers to send mail using a null return address. In the mail, the address gets translated to MAILER-daemon. To fix it in sendmail, go down to ruleset 3, search for a line that starts with R<> It should look like this: R<> $@ < @ > MAIL FROM:<> case change it to this: R<> $#error $@ 5.1.3 $: "User address required" That should block anonymous senders. Dynamic signature

hi, i've seen in many linuxers' mails (specially PHILIP TELLIS) that the signature changes with every email. how do you manage to do that??? i use evolution & netscape 6.1 (yeah...both of them crash a lot :)) in which you have to specify which signature file to use. my first guess is that to write a small "c" program which will overwrite say, "signature.txt" every min. with the help of cron. this program will take input from a small database of signatures. any hints/ideas?. thanks you. -- Registered GNU/Linux User #188850

Linux and Telex Support

Ok. I opened the telex machine and found the following details. 8088 pc chip 2 telex cards (for 2 lines) model No. 405-2 Chipset of the telex card AMD-8085A-2PC /P8085A 8135 EP. There are two 9pin cables connecting the telex cards to a DC/DC converter (what's that) There's a 360 KB floppy drive on the system with some system files. The floppy never used to work earlier, the drive cable was loose. The floppy contained some files command.com, autoexec.bat, start.com, duend.com (what's that). The machine does not need the floppy to boot. so the system's operating system must be on a boot rom. Noel. xcdroast issue

Hello, I had a machine with one CD drive. Then I got a CDwriter on trial "Creative 4224". When I connected the CD drive, xcdroast would not work. It would give me message like "...........scsi emulation not turned on .....". Kernel compilation failed. So I loaded Linux on a spare partition and xcdroast could now see the CDWriter. I returned the CDwriter to my friend and then purchased Samsung 208 CDwriter. This CDwriter was sensed by the kernel directly. But xcdroast gave me the same message and the CDwriter was not seen on xcdroast. I could however see the CD's as /mnt/cdrom and /mnt/cdrom1 I then copied the useful files from the old partition and again loaded Linux. Now CDwriter is seen with one issue (cd reader is not seen inxcdroast but that is a seperate issue). Now, i believe that I have taken a longer route in installing the first CDwriter and then another longer route in getting the next cdwriter working. Can someone give a better way of tackling this issue of chang of cdwriters. Anand

if u dont have a boot disk or resucue disk .. type this on ur lilo --> linux single then u will get the root shell & then try to change the password by --> passwd or else edit /etc/passwd & /etc/shadow & remove the passwd entries for root... cheers~ </shahazad> On Mon, 27 Aug 2001, Nikhil Joshi wrote: > recently installed linux on my friend's comp. Then use sz filename after logging in, and start file download from hyperterminal.
