But I would expect you to pay me "gurudakshina" and other issues -- unfortunately, the fallout of open source. I will try to get accomodation at nominal student rate and food at my home ay most. I can't afford anything else at this point of time. *Of course _lots_ of conditions (behavorial, financial, etc, etc,) apply. Trust has to be deined openly. Somebody has to value my knowledge and provide sufficient funds to pay the bills. About me: I have three years Experiece in digital and analog experience in Industrial electorincs followed by almost 27 years in core and captive IT industry -- For profit and non Profit -- (Core -- revenue streams purely through employment in organisations whose revenues are purely IT based; Captive: Organisations whose revenue stram is NOT IT based -- manufacturing, Construction, Retailers, Educational instirutions etc.) I have sorta fathered, mothered and nurtured and still nurturing may infratructures which have had a longevity of of about 13 years of production use with batrely 5% of carrying cost of the original cost Per Annum. I was asked to 'suggest a laptop' , obviously I am looking for GNU/Linux friendly device. The cost is no factor . Any laptop which is a bit light ( unlike the bulky dell's) and works great . It need not be an gaming machine but should pack a punch ( as per the recent times) . It would be nice if details on 'servicing' are added . an example machine would be : one which can run "compiz 3d + blender+ VLC+ FF(10 tabs one with gmail :P ) + OO" all at the same time :D Regards, Pavithran

Do you think it is primarily motivated by national security concerns, or by a desire to snoop on citizens? Do we have enough safeguards to ensure that this government intrusion would not be a tool for political vendetta or corruption? And lastly, what can we do about it? Comment.

grub error 21 in ubuntu 10.04

How can booting problem be resolved in ubuntu 10.04 which uses grub2? I tried solving it using supergrub disk on a usb device but sgd was not able to write to the mbr correctly and the error continued.Had to always plugin the sgd usb to bootup and manually select the options to boot each time. I believe menu.lst is not available for ubuntu10.04 as it uses grub2 which uses a dynamically generated grub.conf file under /boot/grub --otherwise menu.lst could be edited and the problem solved Since i am using a dell laptop the 3rd option of changing the detection mode of the HDD under bios setup is not possible. The detection option is not present in the bios and the hdd specs seem to be written permanently into the bios firmware. I had to install ubuntu9.04 on another partition to create a newer grub menu. Then after manually logging in to ubuntu 10.04 i had to edit the configuration file of the grub menu of the 9.04 partition --ie. /boot/grub/menu.lst to resolve the issue of booting automatically using the latest updated kernel. So is there any better way to resolve error 21 in ubuntu10.04? The earlier ubuntu installation disks had some options for creating a bootable disk if the grub bootloader was overwritten by windows or some other fault. Both 9.04 and 10.04 installation CDs do not have that rescue option now. TIA Kussh

OT - MTNL Triband Security - undocumented procedure

HI Everyone, I had installed a new wireless + ADSL router on my MTNL Triband line. It was not working since i installed it the log kept saying "username or password failed" The same user name and password was working on my existing dlink adsl router and all settings were copied from there. Finally i went to the local telephone exchange. One of the technicians saw my router and tested it with his user name and password and it works. Then he said that MTNL is using a mac-address lock on all exchanges running on Alcatel hardware. A new router will work only if the mac-address bound in the exchange is removed. He did that and it started working immediately. He told me that this is a security feature that is there so that you can not use the user name and password of any other MTNL user for your internet connection. In case the mac is changed, your net connection will stop working and you will have to complain and they will immediately identify who is using your connection. I had called belkins (the router company) helpdesk and they didnt know why it was not working I called MTNL help desk (1504) and they didnt know why it was not working. They didnt even know that such a thing is there. I dont think most of the MTNL tech staff would be knowing as he had to tell someone in the control room on phone and guide him how to remove the existing mac address. So, next time it may need you to go to the exchange and get it done. I am not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but i thought you guys may find this info useful sometime. regards saswata

html to pdf for all files in a folder

Besides htmldoc is there any other way to convert all html documents in a folder recursively to pdf files? I need to convert html to pdf in some automatic way (script based, gui etc) --typically websites downloaded for offline reading have html documents. These documents are sometimes many pages long. Since there is no way to remember how much of the html file was read before stopping reading for the day, i need to convert the html etc files to pdf--so that the reading done upto the particular day for the particular pdf file can be noted. ls -R gives the names of all files (except hidden files ) in a directory recursively ls -R | grep - i *.htm* will give me a list of all the html files in the directory. BUT i need the pathname of these filenames since their foldernames are also important to convert these files to pdf. Instead of writing a complicated shell script, is there any program which can give the complete PATH and filename for such files in a directory RECURSIVELY. Once this list of COMPLETE filenames is known it would be easy to use a CLI program to convert the file to pdf in a shell script. Recently i saw hp officejet pro printers being used very economically with regard to refilling printer ink in the cartridge. Essentially a one litre bottle of ink costing just 600 to 700 rupees was connected via flexible tubing to the cartridge. The bottle used to last the office for almost an year's printing ink needs. I wonder if such contraptions are available in Mumbai or other cities now. If anyone knows, care to share such info. Kussh

We are a small group of open source enthusiasts, working on an open source Management Information System (MIS) for Micro-Finance Institutions (MFI). >From Wikipedia: Microfinance Institutions<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microfinance_institution> *Microfinance is the provision of financial services to low-income clients, including consumers and the self-employed, who traditionally lack access to banking and related services. * In simple words, MFIs provide financial services to poor people such as loans, insurance etc. MFIs are very operation intensive organizations and hence need fool-proof IT solutions. One critical piece of software needed for MFI operations is MIS which is the core of their business. This system takes care of a whole gamut of things for them. This includes banking software which takes care of loans & savings accounts. Apart from this they also need accounting, HR and reporting/BI etc. This project is called Mostfit <http://mostfit.in> and it is available under MIT license on github <http://github.com/piyushranjan/misfit>. It is written in Ruby with Merb as the web framework, Datamapper as the ORM, RSpec for testing and Haml as the html templating language. Mostfit is also made available on a SAAS model to MFIs. Hello List, I just found that on my friends system firefox renders devanagari fonts very nicely http://imagebin.org/101392 but on my system fonts look like http://imagebin.org/101393 We both are using Firefox 3.6.3 (Mozilla Firefox for ubuntu canonical 1.0) on Kubuntu 10.04. The only difference is his Kubuntu installation is Fresh (done in last month) whereas I am upgrading mine since last 3 years. Do I need to install any package? -- With Regards Abhishek Amberkar

As per them they have built a FREE OS based on NT Kernel. So this means that they have come up with a free Windows Looking OS with capabilities of running Windows applications. Usually cyber cafes use some sort of customized software to keep time track, block sites n similar things, small tweaks to those software can do this n much more (desktop sharing). Hello, Just like the dozens of forwarded mails that warn us of the so called 'dangers' in many things, products, places etc, I received a mail warning the reader about keyboard security. I brushed it off but went on google to check it out. It is no. 11 and goes like this.... "11. Well the avg user will hav a shifty set of speakers and no requirement... and I was talking in their regards only. High end stuff would mean better skills and hence other softies, the noob user doesn't mix audio or do shitload video edits... they want something that plays songs, blends with portable players, loads pics and videos frm devices and such stuff. Highend multimedia works is a totally diff thing and not in question here... Syncing devices on Linux is still a nightmare. Even android phones based on Linux are not easily synced with Linux. This is the basic stuff people require bfr doing audio video mixing and other "professional" stuff... I have tried using Mplayer's *mencoder* to convert to mpg or avi but it resulted in pathetic quality. Any other ideas ? Ffmpeg would work. It works best from command line, but various gui tools also there. Arista transcoder came with lucid works ok, meant for portablea alone. Various gui frontend there for ffmpeg, try winff, was buggy when I used it a few years back, nothing works like the comand line though... Need to place a WiFi AP as well as an IP camera (different locations); both devices are not near any power outlet. Is PoE (non standard*) a solution for such cases? From what I have seen on web sites, these contraptions have two units, one near the switch to inject the DC voltage + the LAN pairs and the second near the device end to tap out the DC and separate the LAN pairs. I am not sure if 12VDC/1A (the input power requirement for AP and camera) is sustainable over the CAT5 pairs. Furthermore, Google searching for products came across the DLink DWL-P200. Has anyone on this list used the product? All suggestions welcome. * not the 48V as per 802.3af Standard. -- Arun Khan

Some observations.....

Hello, The Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit installation in my system works fine except for one basic flaw that the display crashes on any higher load, like opening many applications etc. The crash requires the system to be forced shut down and restarted. It happens suddenly in the middle of some work. There is no xorg.conf in the X11 directory and on the net many others too have reported facing this problem with older 845 mobos. There is no text based or gui control to adjust display related settings like refresh rate etc. As with other modern distros before it, it appears that slowly Linux is going the Windows way where the simple text file configuration is being replaced by system automated processes and the user is loosing control of his system unless he/she is an advanced expert. At least in Windows there are GUIs for hardware setups to replace or update drivers. Ubuntu appears to be too interested in racing ahead of other distros even at the cost of stability. This makes the Ubuntu system good for Beta testers and as a latest toy but not good for serious users. There should be some automated benchmarking software that tests their distros on various machines and reports problems, in simulated conditions. That way they don't have to depend only on filed bug reports to correct problems. For a change, I downloaded the Fedora 12 live + install CD and it looks quite good. Ubuntu 10.04 uses the 2.6.32 kernel and Fedora 12 uses 2.6.31, very close. The live CD boots fine with 512 MB RAM. Its installation was the fastest I've seen as it simply copies the entire cd image to the hard disk, reboots and then adds new users. This live CD installs only on Ext4 partitions. It comes with gnome and has no OpenOffice. I took the opportunity to download Oxygen Office 3 and installed its rpms. OxygenOffice has better compatibility with Office2007 files. http://linux.softpedia.com/progDownload/OxygenOffice-Professional-Download-… After un-taring the folder, simply go to the RPMS folder and run 'rpm -i *.rpm' (as root) to install everything. Then go to the menus subfolder in RPMS and install the Red Hat rpm, to create the menu icons. In both the distros Google Earth crashes in my Intel 845 mobo with a requirement for a forced restart. In Fedora12, the display goes not get garbled, it simply freezes. However Google earth works fine in my Acer Laptop with 915 chipset and Lenny. However due to its 256 MB RAM, its painfully slow. Like Vista and Windows 7, it looks like those who want to use the latest Linux distros will have to upgrade their systems for better stability and display support. Regards, Rony. -- Regards, Rony. I am looking for a letter quality dot matrix printer that can handle single page as well as continuous feed paper. Preference is Epson - but open to other brands as well. This search gives a long list <http://www.openprinting.org/printers/manufacturer/Epson> which is quite daunting. A colleague recommended LX300+II but it is not listed above. I am not sure if the generic dot matrix (24 pin) driver will work with it or not. I do not want to spend Rs 7500 and find out that it will not work with Linux :) Please suggest brand/model that you have personal experience with under Linux environment (heavy duty usage @ law firm). I read the mails which discussed about the pros & cons of MTNL broadband. Since I am from Delhi, and MTNL has got a good reputation out there, I am going with it. Linksys Spa3102 regional settings.

Hi, I have a linksys spa3102 voip adapter. I've been trying to set it up with FreeSwitch and integrate my PSTN line. After repeated attempts I was getting nowhere when I finally looked at regional settings. I've tried various configs and am now reasonably sure that its an issue with regional settings. I reset the spa3102 to default settings, and plugged in the PSTN phone line into fxo and an analong phone into fxs. There is no network cable connected and no sort of PBX involved. When I call my PSTN number, the phone at fxs does ring but a call is not being established. If I answer the phone, there is no call established and it disconnects in 2 sec. and I get a disconn tone, while the caller continues to hear the PSTN number ring. Same thing if the call goes unanswered. The PSTN line status on the spa3102 shows Last Call Disconn. reason: CPC Signal. I think I am correct in assuming that there is no point in any further configuration attempts until I manage to get this call established first. Should this plug and play setup be working by default on every spa3102 if regional settings are correct? If that is the case then it mostly seems like an issue with regional settings. I looked at the voxilla forums and other places and tried whatever regional tone settings I could find for India. Nothing has worked so far. When I bring in the PBX into the picture, I have no problem with my phone working as an sip extension doing everything that is configured just as any other softphone would do. The problem is with PSTN and I suspect its regional settings. Where can I find the correct settings? If anybody has this device configured, please drop me a line. Thanks

Ubuntu 10.04 installation Failure Report

I could not install from the file I downloaded. 1. I created a CD for 32 bit 10.04 ubuntu yesterday. 2. Tried on two machines: same problem 3. While booting from the CDROM, it shows the screen of Ubuntu and Ubuntu with superscript of the icon. 4. Then It says something like: that an unrecoverable problem occured. So cannot install. 5. It further says something like : Will provide a desktop and you figure out. 6. I could go to ctrl+F! etc. 7. But I dont know 1. what to do next 2. whether there is some error in copying iso or in writing the live CD 3. how to find out? Any help welcome.

Ubuntu 10.04 installation Report

Hello, As the latest distros get released, users of older computers have to think twice before installing them since the latest ones are heavier and can slow down the computer. For that reason I had removed Kubuntu 9.04 from my system and reverted back to Debian 5 (Lenny). My system is a P4 2.4 GHZ on an Intel 845 board with 512 MB RAM. KDE4's successors are getting more and more heavy and make them practically unusable on older P4 systems. Then came Ubuntu 10.04 and I had to install its 64 bit version on another machine. Just to see how it looked and felt, I tried the 32 bit CD cd on my own system and was pretty impressed by its sleek look and speed, even in the live CD mode. The menu was fast to access and programs opened reasonably fast. 10.4 has all the latest versions of Firefox, OpenOffice etc. This distro was definitely designed for agility. Since I am a KDE user and to be fair to KDE4.x, the Kubuntu 10.04 Cd was downloaded and tried out live but it was very disappointing. It was slower than Gnome and the looks were very dull. The splash screen during loading had a very poor colour resolution and it looked ugly for a latest distro. The desktop too has some sky blue - gray colour combination that looks lousy. KDE4.x was its usual slow. It looked as if Kubuntu 10.04 was released just as a formality to keep up with Ubuntu 10.04. If the KDE guys are not careful, KDE will become an endangered species. They need to trim and speed it up. Ubuntu 10.04 has finally replaced Debian 5 KDE on my system and I am quite happy about it. The software package manager 'Ubuntu Software Center' is nice for those who want a gui based one. It can be deceptive and do not rely completely on the package grouping/indexing. There are many packages out of this group too and will be available if you type their name in the search query window. A queer thing I noticed was that the package 'build-essential' was not available in the default India repo. After switching to a Taiwanese repo, I got this package. Everything else went smoothly. I installed the latest HPLIP package and got my HP K-209a printing and scanning working properly. Those who want restricted packages for multimedia support and fonts can install 'ubuntu-restricted-extras'. Thunderbird 3 was downloaded and Evolution was removed. Thunderbird 3 has some features of Windows Live Mail and Firefox. It has tabbed windows like Firefox and variable folder view like Windows Live Mail. This mail is being sent from Thunderbird 3. The 64 bit version was installed too on another system yesterday. Everything went fine there too. Just keep in mind that Skype's 64 bit version 2.x still does not have camera support in it. Overall Ubuntu 10.04 is a good system and very handy for those who do not have the latest hardware but want the latest software in their systems. Go ahead, enjoy it. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! Unable to run gOS on VirtualBox

I recently downloaded the 700 mb iso of gOS(www.thinkgos.com) for trying it out. I am using VirtualBox v3 to run gOS. But it is not booting properly. It loads up , shows option of installing and or just running without install. I choose the latter. It loads up, the desktop comes up with mouse cursor but then it is all blank. Can't see anything on the Desktop, only the mouse running over a blank screen. I think there might be some problem with Display or resolution, though have provided 700 mb RAM and 64 MB + video memory. Still, no changes in it. Rest of the OSs run smoothly under virtualized conditions. POP mail filter

I have a POP mailbox hosted with a service provider from where I pull up my messages. I want to set up email clients on two different machine each configured to pull different categories of messages (or rather from different set of senders). How can I create filters (using fetchmail?) such that each client gets only its respective category of messages and flush them while keeping the other messages intact? One of the system is debian while other is ubuntu-jaunty. I am sure many on the list must have configured something like this and would like to learn from them. Hi, We have 3 Gateway servers -- CentOS 5.3 (non-graphical mode) + Dansguardian + Squid. Not much traffic or load. We have 3 ISP & 3 separate teams using 1 ISP each, hence we have setup 3 different servers. I was wondering it it is possible to use virtualization and consolidate all 3 servers on single server. Hello List, I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/karmic/release/ubuntu-9.10-alterna…) on IBM eServer System p5. I get a boot prompt where I enter "expert install video=ofonly" It loads kernel then ELF and then I get a b/w screen saying, done instantiating rtas at 0x07716000 .... done WARNING: maximum cups (1) exceeded: ignoring extras copying OF device tree... Building dt strings... Building dt structure.... Device tree strings 0x01e01000 -> 0x01d023b3 Device tree struct 0x01e03000 -> 0x01e12000 Calling quiesce.... returning from prom_init _ and then system freezes. I've had a model that worked at random intervals, then started working, then stopped working again and again. I've tried BAFO and one other one. I'd suggest making on using an FT232 IC instead, which works best, although the IC itself costs about Rs.450 There's also this vendor on ebay.uk who sells a cable that works on 5V, so you don't need to convert the logic levels, but I can't find a link to the product. Five years ago, the South Indian state of Kerala, pioneered open source in schools with its famous IT@Schools project, that now covers three million students from the 5th-10 standards, involves 200,000 teachers across 4071 schools. Since then, other Indian states like Karnataka, Gujarat, Assam, West Bengal and others have made open source a key part of their school education initiatives. Many schools in India do not have proper premises, blackboards or toilets. In these circumstances, equipping schools with computers seems like a challenge, despite the fact that the Indian Government has decided to spend 6 percent of GDP on education. Proprietary software vendors offer deep discounts for schools and spend close to $20 million on “Train-The-Trainer” programs that enable school teachers to impart computer education to their students. Despite these blandishments, many governments find proprietary software an expensive way of computerizing their schools. For example, a study by the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, found that the Kerala government's usage of OSS saved it Rs 49 crore ($10.2 million). Hello, I was going through the news report about China having 'hacked' our defence computers and allegedly stolen some information. They are even alleged to have stolen email records of 1 year of the Dalai Lama. My query towards those who may have more information about the same is as follows. 1. Are the compromised machines running doze or Linux? If doze then they are asking for trouble. 2. Since emails are stored as a single database file, how does the attacker steal only one year's record? How does he remotely slice a database inbox file date wise and copy it unless he has had long term access to the user_name and password and keeps copying and saving mails together in a clone offline email client like Thunderbird etc. or one by one using a web interface. Otherwise he has to compromise the actual email server that is hosting the email software and steal the entire inbox file, which is more difficult. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! error in gconftool command

I have gone through the tutorial of enabling Ctrl_ALT_Backspace - http://ubuntu.igameilive.com/2009/10/enable-ctrl-alt-backspace-in-ubuntu-91… I want to do it using gconftool, I have Opened the gconf-editor and the corresponding key is * /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/options* ideally, the gconftool command for this will be gconftool-2 --type list --list-type string --set /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/options '[terminate terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp]' but when I am applying the command , it is setting up the right configuration but Ctrl_ALT_Backspace is not working. Secondly, disclaimer, I'm a windows user, and my hand really flies across it when I'm using it. I'm not a hardcore developer, just some programming here / there on PHP or microcontrollers (C). I do use linux, multiple distro's, but spend most of the time on windows / winblows etc. I also got Windows for free from M$ under a certain unrelated engineering subscription. There's two ways of losing an addiction, the cold turkey way, and the slow way. The cold turkey way is awesome, but doesn't work for everyone. Also, I study in a college where the students / crowd isn't very technically inclined (including Engineering students doing Computer sciences). I found that showing them open source on windows worked much better than doing an install fest and throwing them into the linux world. Once they were comfortable with technical aspects like SVN, command line etc, then introducing them to linux worked better. (compared to direct installfest, where most of the students were noting down steps on a notebook, but not getting the steps. So imho, there should always be a basic workshop / lecture on FOSS philosophies and applications in Windows to get the newbies into the scene. After all, most of us are here because of our hatred to Windows / OS X :) Surya Sharma

Their T&C mentions that you shouldn't be recording the video, so have a look at the manual to clarify that. Here's a simple way to do what you want to do: All you need is a Graphics card with Video (or S-video) out, and an video + audio input card. Set your video out as a monitor, then on that monitor: Play the video on the system using any app that works. Create an app or use some that will act like a ticker. tv scrolling announcements

hi, this is a new field for me, I need to have scrolling and flash announcements displayed on a tv screen (digital tv) while users are watching normal programs on tatasky. How is this done? what equipment and software needed? grub rescue: rescue me, scary ubuntu 9.10, beware!

Can any one help me : two of my PCs have gone into 'grub rescue'. I tried (now I think foolishly) to install ubuntu 9.10 (which has this new grub animal 'grub 2') . And that is buggy. I just dont know how to come out. Very strange and *S C A R Y * 1. One machine has existing windows. It had ubuntu 8.04 . I deleted the partition so I could install ubuntu 9.10 . Now the machine refuses to recognise usb stick, usb CDROM so I cannt even boot from them. 2. Other laptop : i thought I will not touch the system that is working fine( ubuntu 9.04) So I used USB CDROM and ubuntu 9.10 disc on it to create a usb stick for 9.10. I did boot from USB CD and chose the stick to install and chose not to install grub as I wanted only one OS on the stick and thought grub will be redundant. (While installing it had asked location of grub on HD(0) etc and that was not relevant . I thought). So I happily ended the process disconnected USB CD ROM drive and restarted the laptop and again I got the sacry 'grub rescue >' prompt I looked up help on the net but , like some previous sufferers , I got no good help. Booting from USB stick : is it ubuntu 9.10 problem

I had reported problem of grub rescue on two machines earlier. Gladly that has been solved completely in one of my two machines. However on the second one, somehow my USB CDROM is not recognised. So I tried to create a USB stick. I could do so very well. However when I use this on the PC, the cursor gets stuck on prompts as this _____________________________________________________________ SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2008-07-15 CBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2008 H. I need to add an additional ethernet interface in a router box and I have run out of PCI slots (board does not have any PCI-express). However, there are a bunch of unused USB ports that I can use. Please suggest USB NICs that are supported by Linux *and* available @ Lam Road. Brand/Model and shop name would be highly appreciated. Speed is less important, as long as I can get about 10Mbps on the iface - it will be used to connect to the ISP link. TIA -- Arun Khan

Hi , Our government is churning out one hazardous bill after another. This time it is a bill called the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage, and it's coming up for a vote in a couple of days. The bill lets U.S. corporations off the hook for any nuclear accidents they cause on Indian soil. They'd only have to pay a meagre amount, and Indian taxpayers would be stuck paying crores for the nuclear clean up and to compensate the victims. Without any public debate, the Prime Minister is appeasing American interests and ignoring our safety. Configuring syslog

Hi, I have been trying to configure arpwatch on my Linux LAN. arpwatch has no configuration parameter which allows me to send logs to a particular file and all the logs are being sent to /var/log/messages. Can someone please explain how to stop a daemon like arpwatch to stop populating /var/log/messages and instead redirect all logs to some other file say /var/log/arpwatch.log. I guess I need to modify /etc/syslog.conf in order to accomplish this. I modified /etc/syslog.conf and it now looks like: ================== # Log all kernel messages to the console. # Logging much else clutters up the screen. #kern.* /dev/console # Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher. # Don't log private authentication messages! *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /var/log/messages # The authpriv file has restricted access. authpriv.* /var/log/secure # Log all the mail messages in one place. mail.* -/var/log/maillog # Log cron stuff cron.* /var/log/cron # Everybody gets emergency messages *.emerg * # Save news errors of level crit and higher in a special file. uucp,news.crit /var/log/spooler # Save boot messages also to boot.log local7.* /var/log/boot.log !arpwatch *.* /var/log/arpwatch.log ================= Now all my logs for arpwatch are getting recorded to /var/log/arpwatch.log along with /var/log/messages.
