Couple of things to be taken care of when using The Best DSL service in Mumbai. 1) Please change router password from default "admin". By going into the router--->Status, I can get my router's IP address. If I keep trying the IPs directly in ascending or descending serial order, sure enough I will reach other routers and where the default password is admin. Not that I can gain anything out of it, but can fiddle around with the settings and make it difficult for the other person. OR simply enable remote telnet management/web management and try and exploit those. Changing the admin password is a good first step. 2) The login/password (phone number/CA number) will work from any modem/location which has DSL enabled. This means that unlike the Caller ID based dial up system, I can use my username/password from anyone's dsl enabled location. The converse is, someone could do the same to me too. while they can get your number from the username field if they access your router, they cannot get your CA number. However, one call to the call center and a couple of requests later, you can get that too. for any number. They do not have a good verification system in place. So you can start downloading on others time. Just like the usernames/passwords circulated during VSNLs 15000/yr TCP/IP account days. Changing the default password by going to the mtnl website and subsequently in the router would be another good step. 3) Also, after every change, we are supposed to go into Tools-->System, Save and Reboot. This does not work with Firefox 1.5 beta atleast. Hope this helps. I have already told my sub divisional engineer about this and sent a brief note to the feedback form. Hi people, I want to make an mp3 player in Linux. It's just for the experience. I was looking around for the specs of mp3 format. Couldn't find any. That is kinda obvious since mp3 is a proprietary format. But there are so many open source mp3 decoders AND encoders. Where / how do these people get the specs? I had once worked on a utility for automatically updating tags from musicindia website.... I found this opensource java based project to be a very good starting point.. it has classes for MP3 files IDE tags etc. http://mediachest.sourceforge.net/ you may also look at KDE multimedia sources if you are comfortable with C++

Wanted Video Cropper

Hello All, I am looking for a video cropper that works in FC4. Uncle google pointed towards LIVES. After some dependency hassles I downloaded LIVES but thats too slow and hangs and sometimes I need to press the reset button as it hangs my system too. It may be due to the conflicts in rpms as some dependencies were downloaded from yum and some from the forbidden lavin(?). However I am now looking for something thats easy to load directly from yum and works properly. I have converted some dvds to single mpeg files (in windows) and I need to split them into 2 cds. This is interesting. I posted a similar query here about 2-3months back. MTNL now has pay per use scheme (no monthly rent). So say if I get DSL at home and office. ie. I pay installation charges for both places. So DSL is activated on both lines. But I take Night Unlimited (DSL NU) scheme at only one place, obviously home, so I can monitor night downloads and I take pay as you use scheme (DSL MTNL) for office. But at both places I use same (home) username and password so pay per use is NOT used at all. And may be I can setup cron job at office that will reboot modem at 00;00 and stop it at 08:00. And I can have downloading going on both places. This seems quite possible. MTNL should be informed about this. May be you(AD) can do. Amish.

Internet with Fedora Core 1

Hello friends, I'd like to ask a very trivial question today. Actually I am a novice Linux user and am taking sure but slow steps towards complete migration from Windows to Unix/Linux. I am using RedHat Fedora Core1 at my home and college, but the only real hurdle in my path to becoming a full Linux only user is that I cant connect to the internet. I have this FC1 system, with a Bsnal broadband connection. At the time of installation, I didnt configure my IP address or DNS service. I let it remain default to DHCP. But now when I create a new xDSL connection using Internet connection wizardover my NIC card (eth0), the connection does activate as the message says, but the websites dont open. Also, at the time of bootup, what shoul be the message regarding network interface eth0. I hav always got an OK message when I didnt configure it . But after assigning it an IP 192.168.10.1, it says failed to bring up my ethernet card. So kindly help me out, coz although I am comfortable with a little administration and software package installation, I still experience a lot of problems, when trying to configure sendmail or DNS or NIS etc and this internet connection problem is making me mad. As I had really set a deadline to switching over to Linux fully( no windows usage at all), by this month's end. I hope many of u can help me out, by giving me some insight on where i might be doin something wrong, where can i find step by step tutorials etc. I hav also installed Roaring Penguin's pppoe software, but even that failed to help. What I did was change the password on the site. Then launch the ADSL modem configuration and change the login details and Save. Then I had a couple of days with the new password. Then a overall network outage happened. i.e. even the 1504 ppl couldn't connect. then they came back on and I was still out. Many calls later... I had a guy asking me to do everything on the modem conf except stand on my head. In the end I happened to mention that I had changed the password to non-default value. It was like I committed some sacrilege to ancient MTNL gods. He asked me to reset it back and never change it again. I did the same and sure as hell it worked the very first time.
