Hi, In Ubuntu 11.04 AMD64 installation, I had to manually install Mozilla Seamonkey 2.1. The Mozilla Seamonkey 2.0.14 available in Ubuntu update repository did not work properly. The plugins directory which used to be there in the application directory structure is missing. I can not install adobe flash 64 bit version manually in this version. In earlier version I used to copy the libflashplayer.so in the plugins directory (/usr/lib/seamonkey-2.0.13/plugins/) I installed the Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin, and it installed the plugin nppdf.so in .mozilla/plugins folder of my home folder. I copied the libflashplayer.so in the same directory, but it does not show up in the about:plugins display nor does flash work. A web search in Google did not give any indication. Can any one point me to the correct directory to install plugins in Mozilla seamonket 2.1 Thanks and regards. sadhu

Ubuntu 11.04 LAN Data Transfer

On my Ubuntu 11.04 install on laptop (amd64 arch) as well as desktop (x86 arch) on the office wired LAN (Intranet, not connected to internet), there is a constant 6-15 kilobytes/second data down happening. The LAN works normally at all times, but even with no activity this data down is running. I checked with internet connected wifi on laptop and a USB dongle on both, but there was no such data transfer in idle conditions. It doesn't happen when on Windows 7. Is there a tool to find out which port or software is taking this data? I tried netstat but couldn't make a headway. Searched on ubuntuforums but found nothing close enough. Can somebody please guide me how to go about it. -- Sanket Shah

While the government's tender specifications call for dual-booted laptops offering the Windows starter edition and Linux (Tamil version), activists say it must be only an open source. An oft-cited example is the IT@School project, started by the Kerala government in 2003. “We had both Windows and Linux initially, but we migrated to the open source completely in 2008,” says K Anvar Sadath, executive director of the project. While Swecha of Andhra Pradesh is also striving to train students and teachers in free software, Assam, Punjab and Haryana have started using open source software in education. It is unfortunate that while in the West, the dependence on proprietary software is decreasing, the developing countries are giving in to predatory marketing tactics, says Atul Chitnis, consulting technologist and founder, FOSS.In. Heterogeneous environments of companies train us to choose the best tool for the job, considering compatibility with specialised applications and vendor support,” says Suresh Ramanujan, a software consultant. MTS mblaze netconnect

Namaste, I am trying to use my MTS mblaze netconnect with my Fedora 14. The modeswitching takes place automatically. I don't have to manually use the modeswitch command to switch the mode from storage device to modem. The problem starts after that. When I allow the network manager to connect to the internet automatically, it shows connected and also assigns an ip address to my computer. It also adds the default nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf but I am not able to ping www.google.com or 8.8.8.8. Then I changed the nameservers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. and tried pinging again. It failed. Next I tried using wvdial. The device connects, but again I am unable to ping and the modem shuts down automatically after 2 minutes or so. I starting reading more about this and realized that the wvdial is nothing but a heuristic frontend that uses the chat(08) program. I think writing the chat script should solve my problem, but the problem is that to write the chat script I will need specs of how this particular modem works. The modem is identified as ONDA systems communications device after typing lsusb in the shell and the manufacturer is ZTE. Postfix Query

Hello, I have been going through various docs on the net about sasl authentication in postfix. In the system that I have set up at a client's place, mails are going fine but there is a small issue that needs to be corrected. The setup is a group of machines on LAN running Outlook Express mail clients and a Linux box running postfix pushing all mails to the main ISP's smtp server. Since It is a relay server, I have used the parameter relayhost = [smtp_of_ISP]:25 in the main.cf file. The sasl auth is using smtp_auth_enable and not smtpd_auth_enable and the user names/passwords are listed in the /etc/postfix/sasl_password file. The only *smtpd* related entry is smtpd_recipient_restrictions = check_recipient_access hash:/etc/postfix/recipient_access, reject. Mails are going as required and only to those in the recipient_access list as required. Now if an employee has left and his/her entries are removed from the postfix box as well as the ISP server mail accounts, the Outlook Express mailer can still send mails as that non-existent user. What I found through more reading of docs is that my OE accounts can send mails even without authentication as I don't have smtpd_auth_enable and the LAN is in my mynetworks parameter. Not a big problem as it is local and under control and the OE account can be deleted for that user. However, why is the ISP allowing this unknown user which postfix is relaying when I have everything set in the smtp_auth_ part of postfix? Suppose there is a flaw in my settings, shouldn't the ISP's mail server reject those mails when the username and password do not match with their list? Linux 3.0

Linux 3.0 on AMD Hudson (Gigabyte E350N-USB3). Had a major struggle getting 5.1 sound going - all kernels between 2.6.32 and 2.6.39 have a problem with ALC892 (something to do with 64bit DMA). The display would not work at all and I had to ssh to get to the machine. Careful inspection of syslog showed a missing radeon binary firmware blob - !@#$ piece of shit I HATE BLOBS - getting it from sid repo solved the problem. Not much info on this board, it being very new even abroad. I am pleasantly surprised at this board being available a month ago. I decided to purchase this one because coreboot was being ported and presumed there would be no problems, since it's a lot harder to run linux in bios than as a regular kernel. Now to test 1080P.

[cross-post] Ruby on Rails vs Drupal - for new website

Hi Friends I would like to know which of these frameworks - RoR or Drupal - should be chosen for developing a new website. The website should support the following. - A system for - requests to be created by customers, - which get automatically assigned to engineers - request gets resolved by the assigned engineer - customer closes the request with a rating - Excellent Database support - both customers and engineers must be able to register / login to see the status of their requests. - Automatic emails on request status - Generating Reports must be easy. - 'Social' from the ground up. - Easy Payment Gateway Integration - 100,000+ Hits a day - support for Great UI. More importantly, Changes to the UI must be very easy. A google search on the topic gives results pointing more towards Drupal (as probably the internet is dominated by PHP/Drupal developers) and am finding it hard to decide. I also heard a suggestion to go for Microsoft ASP .NET for scalability reason- confused again :(. I do not want to "pay" for Microsoft products. I feel an open source product supported by a community of developers would be better than a Microsoft product. And that would keep the costs low as well. Could you please give me some pointers. Once website development starts, changing the framework later on would prove to be very expensive and I want to avoid such a situation. Hence, need your expert opinions to decide now.
