CEP Workshop on "GNU/Linux at Work"

First of all ... we desperately need publicity for the workshop to work. No turnout so far, although the DEP people say its not yet time go get really alarmed. We are trying to put together a list of people who might be interested and mailing them the brochure. Would be great if people on the list also helped by doing the same. Is there any way to get some publicity done through the groups in Pune, Nagpur, Nanded, Hyderabad, Indore? New RPM addition in NFS Installation server

Hi I have an NFS installation server to install RedHat Linux 9.0 workstations. After installing new workstation I have to run rpm -Uvh <rpmfilename> to update some updated services released after RedHat Linux 9.0. I want to incorporate that services to NFS installation server so that updated services will be installed by default. Simply copying updated files to NFS installation directory doesn't work. It even doesn't work if I rename updated file to older one. Could anyone guide me to achieve the desire result.

Problem creating usernames with dots

Hi I wasn't able to create a username with dots (m.vinayak) on my local machine which runs RH 9. Any idea why this has been disabled and how this can be circumvented. This was allowed on RH 8. Do all latest distros do the same thing or is this a RH thing? problem with libstdc++.so.5

i'm using RedHat GNU/Linux 7.3, and have recently installed gcc3.2.1. since then i've been getting the foll error for some apps libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory some of the places where i've got the foll error: 1. installed svgalib for graphics programming in c (with shared libraries) the error doesn't occur if i install svgalib with static libraries 2. installed blackdown java1.4.1. tried running the simplest program with only a "System.out.println()" line plz help! -- HACKER: Someone who loves to program and loves being clever about it. --- Pradnyesh Sawant (The Doubtfire) B.E. modem troubles

hi, i have got an internal modem, and it works fine on my comp [got drivers etc for linux]. now i want to install it in a lab comp, and that comp is really old [had to take apart three junk PCs to assemble one working one, and still not sure if everything is fine]. neways, there are two free pci ports and i have tried the modem on both. the problem is: i am expecting linux to detect the device atleast, and show it in lspci/cat /proc/pci etc. but it isnt. i remember harddrake showing a red entry for the modem [as winmodem] when i had not installed the drivers on my PC, but here it just says "cant load serial module" when starting up and doesnt show any modem. i tried changing bios settings to do the pnp stuff itself with autmatic setting. but despite everything lspci is not showing the modem :(( its eating up a lot of my time, and got to get this working before i cud proceed. please let me know if u have ideas on how to deal with this. tia, -- amit upadhyay

Printing from GNU/Linux m/c -> Windows m/c

Hello Everyone, I am trying to share a printer connected to windows98 m/c. I am using cups to manage printing from GNU/Linux box. The printer is an Epson dot matrix 24 pin series printer. on the windows98 m/c printer is shared(no authentication required) and is visible in the Network Neighbour Hood as shared. In cups I tried few settings but results have not been encouraging at all. Setting 1 Deviece URI : smb://1.2.3.4:80/printer_name Driver selected was Epson 24 series. But after these settings I get error saying "Connection failed with error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFULL" The log level setting for cups is at debug2 but the error log also shows the same statement nothing more. Setting 2 Device URI : ipp://1.2.3.4/printer_name or Device URI : http://1.2.3.4/printer_name Driver was the same as in above case. After doing this setting I get an error saying "host 1.2.3.4 is busy or is down will retry in 30 seconds." and then the same line is also present in the error log. Printing to the same printer is posible from another windows machine. but cups is having trouble. Suggestions anybody. Thanks in Advance Shashank
