cannot set resolution to 1440x900 on Debian Etch

I have installed Debian Etch on a gigabyte motherboard GA-MA74GM-S2, having AMD 740G + SB700 Chipset. The website says it has ATI Radeon 2100 integrated graphics. Output of lspci is as follows: 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 796e This driver selected for this is "vesa". If I try "ati", X server refuses to start. But the main problem is resolution - it is set at 1280x1024. I tried using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and setting resolution to 1440X900, but at that, the resolution was set to 1400x1050 when X server was restarted. Even adding the resolution manually to the Modes lines in xorg.conf and restarting X server did not solve the issue. How can I fix this? Thanks. -- Rohit V. Bhute

This is to deliver skills based education to very poor people who can afford a mobile but not even a television or a computer ---- in slums basically. On this mobile, you will have to have a network which gives them jobs based on the skills based education ----- all this may get possible with the data-based G3 mobiles coming out They don't need a certifying authority but good word of mouth clients and references which should be posted on the net. For a good worker, the boss will give references, for a bad worker or contractor nobody will give references. Now, can one distribute education which is: 1. Micro-campus based education or joint family like Education which keeps children together in groups of 10 for a long time ----- longer than the current 10th standard ---- is that feasible or desirable, by forming them into focus groups and business groups and friend groups. Nowadays, when families have only one or two children, do we need 10 students together in a joint family like atmosphere or "gurukul" for a long time. So it is not purely online (is that ever feasible or one needs people present) but say daily or once a week meetings. WEll, If you go to a DEEMED University which has been opened by coaching-classes, they might see the justification for this :: "the University gives online degrees, but the face-to-face contact takes place in rooms of individuals everywhere---- so 10 students can learn at a time together", and they appear to "coaching classes say once a week". This can be opened all over the world ----- not just in Mumbai. What do u get from this ---- I don't know. For me, it is just the typing of an idea. Even schools, can go from 60 to 100 students per class that way ---- not every body should appear daily in the school, but can be taught at a teacher // associate's residence. Where is the cost to build new school buildings ---- new Universities buildings and so on ? Can we not do an hybrid of online learning ---- meet in rooms. People do satsangs in their own homes everywhere of the guru of their choice. You can call this an online University satsang. Erach NOW HOW DO YOU RECRUIT STUDENTS FOR A DISTRIBUTED CAMPUS // MICRO-GRAINED CAMPUS. With online training. It is very easy. Suppose there are TEN students in 12th standard or 11th standard or even in primary school (don't forget real-estate is now going vacant and prices are dropping). Well, there subjects are not ALL different. They decide to UNITE after 10th, or 11th, or 12th standard ----- they approach a DEEMED UNIVERSITY or a COLLEGE and say ----- give us your online training ---- we will do it from our HOME and perhaps then go abroad for higher studies. Neither, are we going to make our parents pay in lakhs which we don't want them to spend (especially in times of recession) nor in thousands of dollars, but we will study the online material together and contact a tutor such as tutorvista.com (if you are abroad) or live via phone in a call-center, old teacher live, or some one in not so premier cities ------------------- so the superb online college is made. This should be better than seperating students all the time in 10th, 11th, 12th, in the 3 years of bachelors, and so on -------- and let them build a stronger cohesive network which would last them all their life. Is this idea becoming better. Hi, My apologies to the net for flooding them with requests and top posting and breaching netiquette (I apologized to both Easwar and Sanjay). Well, my Ubuntu 8.10 does NOT install on my Kubuntu 8.04 computer. And Canonical promises only 18 months of SECURITY updates ---- not ALL updates. Yet, I have ordered Kubuntu 8.10 from CANONICAL. My machine has something like 768 Kbytes of RAM. Now, what can a KIOSK do ---- why should cultural book depot or a college put a kiosk. How can you enhance the marketing appeal of a LINUX kiosk in any book-store (educational). Well, how about training courses English (from Hindi/Marathi/local Indian language) followed by online testing (a cybercafe would love this) followed by in-person testing or (in-camera testing in the cybercafe). The training course could be scheduled for 1 hour of adult training or 30 minutes of adult training daily and distributed via DVD / CD ---- computer should not be needed if you want to reach the very poor --- but if you wish initially computer could be needed. What are the consequences of boosting English, boosting Education, boosting even skill-based training and knowledge-based training ? Well, Google language tools translates web-pages into Hindi (written) and shows original Wikipedia pages in English. The IIT's have courses they distribute online. Why are you focusing on KIOSK and LINUX (Linux is merely a tool, Windows works just fine/see Wikipedia) ---- why not an entire University. (Sorry, I am a toothless PhD so I seek to inspire you to lift your vision for Education --- but I have no resources or labor to give). Flame me if you want. You have seen students smoking outside colleges ---- do you think you could inspire them to build open-source content (or content for a cheap fee). There is a website which sends you the revenues for free of all the videos loaded on it. I asked an old woman (67) whether she would put an Italian-Hindi cd (author it, she teaches Italian when she has students), she promptly said, what is in it for me ? Erach

hard-disk queries

Hi friends. Does Linux auto-powerdown a SATA hard-disk, if none of its partitions are being used/mounted? I have a WD 250GB drive on a SATA port, with ext3 partitions. 2-3 times I heard swishing sounds and clicks. This morning I fired up the Partition editor after one such event and found that the drive was not listed in the partition editor. A reboot fixed the problem. Another issue was I am getting 'could not read block <7-8 digit number>' errors (which would terminate all the operations) when I tried to merge two partitions on this drive - by deleting one and growing the other. I got same error when I deleted the second one and created a new one of size equal to sum of earlier drives. I succeeded when I tried again second time. I monitored the drive for 2-3 hours this morning by frequently loading the partition editor, but it appeared in the editor without fail. Is a HDD failure imminent? Regards. -- Rohit V. Unable to mount folders exported by NFS Server

Hi, I am having three linux system in my LAN with details as follows: 1. Open SUSE 10.2 with Static IP Address 192.168.0.2 and treating as Server. 2. Fedora Core 6 with Static IP Address 192.168.0.3 and treating as Client1. 3. Zenwalk Linux 5.2 with Static IP Address 192.168.0.4 and treating as Client2. Now I want to export one fixed folder to Client1 and another fixed folder to Client2 from Server so that I can work on Server from Client Systems using the concept of NFS. For this purpose I made following entry in the /etc/exports file: ======================================================================= # See the exports(5) manpage for a description of the syntax of this file. # This file contains a list of all directories that are to be exported to # other computers via NFS (Network File System). # This file used by rpc.nfsd and rpc.mountd. It works quite well except for infrequent dhcp no ip address issues. I am using it with both Ubuntu & Fedora with a wi-fi AP cum router in between the reliance wimax router and my laptop.. The wimax router requires power so u need some ups/inverter for use during power cuts. hi i have upgraded Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 8.10 using Ubuntu 8.10 i386 dvd, upgrade was sucessful, but after restart (after upgrading to 8.10) its not showing my dvd writer. What should i do now? Pls Confirm! Thanks n Rgds Inder

Hi, Read for seeing how science made politics in USA on Star Trek, Star Trek -- Next Generation and so on on: http://www.arts.mcgill.ca/MEPP/exofile/sftv.html Is it possible for Indians to make a movie on Science mixing Science and politics. We only mix religion and politics and family drama and politics and politics and politics. But the most non-political show (I thought so) of Star Trek has USA politics in it. Erach

Need a movie production DVD distribution for LINUX with people trained on it

I need a movie production distribution from LINUX and people trained to operate that distribution. So I guess the issue is not "this distribution v/s that distribution" but movie production distribution v/s music production distribution v/s server distribution v/s easy to use distribution. debian software dependency to gnowledge dependencies

Several of us use Debian GNU/Linux and among other features we have all appreciated the way Debian software package dependencies are calculated to give us a stable package. At gnowledge.org we harvested the data from the packages.tgz file of Debian 4.0 and created a program that graphically displays the dependencies, called dependency maps. Search for your favorite package and see how dependent a software is on other packages.
