Hi all, Maybe I'm asking another noob question. But, wanted to know, how the big companies gain profit who run Free and Open Source project like Mozilla, Apache, etc. Of course, even if you are working for Free and Open source projects, there has to be some income. Fwd: command to get description of packages listed in a file

Hi all Is there any easy way to get the description of all packages listed in a file which contains the names of all such packages? eg. i used sudo dpkg --get-selections >installed-software to make a list of all installed software packages on my system However I want to remove some of them in batch mode (from the command line) instead of by using synaptic and deleting them one by one which is a cumbersome process. So the description of such packages is needed in another file containing a subset of names of packages likely to be removed. How can this be done ? Kussh

SchoolOS Digital Library - is a collection of 98 Books. Total size of this iso DVD is 1.8 GB. I have collected books from various resource and 'fit best' for School Education system Right now, It has eBooks in English language but Team is working for add book for Indian language. Majority of Book are taken Wikipedia so this ISO can server as "great" reference book. I will be glad if anyone can review this "Digital Library". SchoolOS Project is seeking collaboration with different entities world world to enhance the quality of "Digital Education" across India and worldwide. [OT] Internet Archives: event tomorrow

Hey all, Sorry for the late notice -- wasn't sure if it would be appropriate to post here - we're organizing an event tomorrow all day (10:15 AM onward) at the Max Mueller Bhavan at Kala Ghoda, entitled "Properties of the Autonomous Archive". It would have been a good incentive to pay Zimbra team and get their paid version rather the movin back to exchange, still it would have been cheaper. I personally think that moving back to exchange had a fundamental thought process problem then with features, if main product is free its expected to get everything possible free of cost. Seeking: Scanners compatible with FOSS OCR , application for building Contacts database

I propose to purchase a scanner and also use the same , among other things, for reading Business cards of contacts to build a database. My query 1. Can I assume that using any scanner I can get pdf files and the same can be OCRed ( using pdfocr script which uses Cnueiform ) 2. Are there any scanners I should avoid 3. Any experience or Contra-indication against Canon LiDE 100 . 4. Any application that reads the business cards and intelligently (or interactively) give parsed data from business card 5. Any recommendation for FOSS application for building a database for contacts using scanner/OCR/manual effort jitendra
