Our question is 'With many distros going for a six-monthly release cycle, do you think the release cycles of distros are too short? (And users don't have to upgrade on a frequent basis?) A Linux Sysadmin/Netadmin workshop is planned for the week of 16/Sep/2013. The workshop will cover: - The FOSS model, various open source licenses - File Hierarchy - Command line utilities general. - System Admin, Network Admin. - Shell scripting basics - the ability to read and follow system scripts. - Setup/Configuration of basic services like DNS, FTP, DHCP ... - Expose the individual to multiple Linux distributions [a] The duration of the workshop will be approx. 40 hours of contact time + more with individual assignments. Attendees will meet 3 times a week for 3 hours each (90 min. lecture + 90 min. hands on exercise) in the evening hours (18:00 to 21:00). Our USP 1. Small class size - no more than 10 attendees per session. 2. training philosophy -- "Make New Mistakes and Learn from them" Thus the more effort the attendee puts in, the more s/he learns :) 3. Each attendee get his/her own system (guaranteed) to practice the hands on exercises. 4. Goal is to prepare the attendee to handle real life scenario. 5. What is a cryptoparty? A CryptoParty is a hands-on training program where we introduce Internet users to the tools that help in protecting privacy in the online world. The training program will teach the ways in which communications and data can be encoded to prevent disclosure of their contents through eavesdropping or message interception, using codes (2), ciphers (3), and other methods, so that only certain people can see the real message. The graphics part is not important but need good SATA, USB3.0 and Gigabit LAN support. Ubuntu 13.10 replacing X.org with Mir

Some of the recent announcement by Ubuntu clearly mentioned that their latest release 13.10 will replace X-window server (X.org) with their own Mir-Display Manager. I strongly feel this is going to make a big impact in the Linux Community/Developers. Even-though the license is GPL, I think they are planning to reach the Eco-system that Android and Apple is having. In some of the blog entires Ubuntu has mentioned that Unity 7 will run atop of XMir, an implementation of X that provides a compatibility layer that allows software, desktop environments, peripherals and multi-monitor setups designed for X to continue to work as expected. But am not sure about how feasible it is .Looking forward to hear your inputs. About Mir - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mir/ PS: Kubuntu has announced that they are not planing to switch to Mir. Below the comments made by Jonathan Riddell of Kubunut- "A few months ago Canonical announced their new graphics system for Ubuntu, Mir. Here at Kubuntu we still want to work as part of the community development, taking the fine software from KDE and other upstream projects and putting it on computers worldwide. Letter to the Indian FOSS Community

Dear people, I believe in Free and Open Source Software, because I want to give our children the best possible tools we have, which they can adapt to their needs, and share on. FOSS is humanity's best hope. I have been an observer of the Linux community from the periphery, since I started using Linux in 1995. I have been programming since 1984, when my privileged parents got me a ZX Spectrum+ with 48Kb of RAM. So I would like to make a few semi-informed remarks. I invite your feedback. There seems to be too much diversity. Everybody can roll their own distro, which is great for special purposes. For the most part though, it confuses people that there's no "Linux UI". China has started transitioning to a single distribution of Linux. An Air Traffic Control officer told me that all offices are designed to be identical, so that one person can easily start working in another location. Let everyone customize their experience; that's great. Yet, there really is a need for adoption by the Indian government, of a single GNU/Linux distribution. We cannot remain at the mercy of the NSA any longer. There seems to be too much groupthink. We think too alike. There is not enough real debate which would foster innovation. Everyone is too locked-in into the status quo. For example, media statistics show that we as a community, are too male. Males like to take control, and drive stick shift cars. We would give up compilers, and dive into the logic gate and decide where electrons should go, if we could. This is entirely the wrong way to think! We "submit" to the machines all the time, without thinking about it. Machines should do our bidding and become ever more DWIM ( Do What I Mean ). After decades of programming in the trenches, I realized that programmers are really glorified clerks. We fill out forms for the machine all day long. Yet, we trust the CPU chip and rarely bother studying it. Who's ruling who here? Google's Notebook "Pixel" ( obsolete name on arrival, like calling something "gold" -- how quaint! ) has a great dual-mode concept -- Let the machine hide all its complexity in one mode, and expose it in great detail, in the other. What we have instead, is General Purpose programming tools that try to bridge this cognitive divide, unsuccessfully. So it's a lot of work for the user to get things done using Linux, because nobody has thought of the UX from the ground-up. Lots of sucky UI's that geeks fetishize, enlightenment, whatever. And, it's also a lot of work for the programmer to get things done. To develop a whole web application, one has to know for example: DDL, SQL, Perl, Template Toolkit ( yes, somebody invented a mini-language syntax just for templates! ), HTML/XHTML, CSS/or some more compact variant, JavaScript/CoffeeScript/some variant, and Backbone.js/jQuery/( some JavaScript ). So that's 8 languages, if you're counting! I jumped through all these hoops, and I have touched a dozen other languages in my life. And you know what? This needs to change! It really does. Domain-specific languages, such as those used by the Rails set of technologies, are obsolete. We need one language, to fluidly bridge these cognitive gaps between various kinds of people and machines. It has to be International! Every programmer can read comments in a language of their choice. No more -- "you must learn English to do this"! We must learn to delegate more to machines. They are, as "The Matrix" movies say, already beyond our comprehension. Do you want freedom? Then don't be slave to your machine. You have jammed your head full of telephone numbers, and IP addresses, and PIN's, and God-knows what garbage your machine has fed you! Your machine tells you -- learn this new language, and I will make you more powerful! And you gladly start learning new syntax. Is this really "knowledge"? We must discard the tools that Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds gave to us, and use their philosophy. The are fingers pointing to the Moon, not the Moon itself. They developed Free Software using closed source software, because it was the only way they could. We must use Free Software to really liberate ourselves, not bow to old Gods. We have let Linux become surrounded by ugly Java ( in the form of Android ). Don't worry, Samsung, and Google, and the NSA ( No Such Agency ) really are rich and powerful for a reason. And BSD? It's surrounded by some Apple crap. Rich=Trustworthy Beautiful=Good Free Software? Free Speech? We can barely tolerate trolls like Girish on this Free Software list. So we set our filters to ignore him. "..be cool and learn it", he says! Don't learn anymore! Rethink from scratch. We don't need no education! Cheers, - Ashwin. The 3.5" disks have pin outs, one of these pairs can be jumpered to make the *entire* disk 'ro' - this takes care of remote root/sudo scenarios. Anyone with physical access can easily remove the jumper and make the *entire* disk 'rw' -- Thanks guys for your responses and information. Friends, With so much espionage happening in computers, I was wondering whether a read only mounted partition is read only by software only or is there an electrical lock on the hdd, which does not seem possible for multi-partition disks as another partition may be writeable. Can a malicious software gain control of the electrical side of the hdd and modify or delete data, even on a read only mounted partition? For the military then, would it be better to use an entire disk as a single partition and lock it down electrically? Regards, Rony.

Long time Debian developer Ray Dassen died on May 18. Ray was a Debian Developer for an incredible 19 years. He joined the project in 1994, and continued to be an active contributor until recently. Ray was one of the founding members of the Debian GNOME team, his friendliness and willingness to help fostered a spirit of collaboration within the GNOME team. Free Software Movement Maharashtra - Outcome of preparatory meeting The preparatory meeting for formation of 'Free Software Movement Maharashtra' was a success. The meeting was held at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay on 4th May 2013. 44 people participated in it. The agenda of the meeting was: 1. Discussion on the importance free software and knowledge as a commons 2. Discussion about the need for a movement in the free software domain 3. Forming an organising team to take forward activities in Maharashtra 4. Listing and approving of action items for the next few months The participants were welcomed by Vikram Vincent, Member, General Council, FSMI and Prof. Puru Kulkarni moderated the session. Prof. Kannan Moudgalya inaugurated the first agenda point by talking about the FOSS initiatives at IITB and the efforts to connect with the teachers and students from all over the country. Prof. D.B. Phatak explained about the role of Aakash and the need for large scale efforts to localise knowledge. He raised several points of importance, two of which are the need to create strong business ecosystems in the FOSS domain and the need for the end users to have the freedom to choose the products and services they want. Dr. T. Jayaraman of TISS highlighted the efforts of TISS in opening up knowledge and the challenges that arise out of such initiatives. He extended support both from himself personally and also of his colleagues at TISS for furthering the free software movement. Dr. Vivek Monteiro spoke a few words on the universalisation of knowledge. Venkatesh Hariharan of Knowledge Commons intervened in the discussions and provided the theoretical framework for knowledge as a commons. Kiran Chandra, General Secretary of FSMI, detailed the need for a strong people’s movement in the free software domain. He emphasised on the guiding principles of FSMI which allowed it to take up issues of human concern and society. The recent mandate of AICTE (to all its institutes) to implement Microsoft's Office365 suite of collaboration tools was discussed. The meeting then called for volunteers to form a core team who would drive the activities for the next few months towards initiating the Free Software Movement Maharashtra. A team of 18 members was created, and Dr. Puru and Vikram will coordinate the same. The members of the organising team are Dr. T. Jayaraman, Mrunmayee Tayade, Rajesh Kumar, Nikita Belavate, Rahul Maganti, Deepak Pacha, Arun Khan, Siji Sunny, Kiran Eranki, Prof. Shishir Jha, Dinesh Jain, Rahul Muttu, Pradeep Mohandas, Krutikaa Jawanjal, Karthik Nadar, one for ERP-next. The meeting had representation from several organisations such as IITB, TISS, FSMI, Wikipedia, Knowledge Commons, DA-IICT, ILUG-BOM, Somaiya and other colleges. The ‘Free Software Movement Maharashtra' with the domain name of http://fsmm.in was declared functional. The following points were chosen as action points in near future: 1. FOSS sessions in colleges and schools 2. GNOME Marathi popularisation and supporting respective groups already working in this domain. 3. Office 365 4. Cross-posting 07/05/13 Hyderabad In favour of Publication Sub :AICTE removes the mandatory clause from the notice on implementing Office-365. A delegation from the Free Software Movement of India and other groups have submitted a representation demanding the revision of the decision of the AICTE making the usage of Office-365 mandatory on the 30th of April 2013. A group of young parliamentarians led by P Rajeev also made a representation to the AICTE chairman raising concerns that were similar on 07-05-13. The signatories include Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Sitaram Yechury, KN Balagaopal, PK Biju CP Narayanan, Prashantho Chatterjee, Tapan Sen, Dr T Seema and MP Achutan. We understand that the AICTE has now agreed and is removing the mandatory clause from the notice. We welcome this decision. However, we demand that AICTE should revise the decision of using Office-365 totally, as it is not in the interest of the students, institutions and colleges. AICTE as a public funded body should not engage in supporting proprietary systems. We also thank all those in the academia, intellectuals, developer community, policy makers and parliamentarians who have taken it up with AICTE for revising the decision.

China is realizing benefits by adapting to this changing technology landscape, and standardizing on Linux. This gives China a significant advantage in security, and education, and goes a long way towards ending their financial dependence on foreign software. Our government is driven on vehicles whose engines can only be fixed by paid foreign mechanics. Our cars should be opened to Indian mechanics. Microsoft Office, and Windows are opaque to our students. Chinese students will gain an edge on us by using Linux, an operating system whose source they can freely study, improve, and share. How to detect a power failure?

I am thinking of something like a mobile charger that would plug in a regular 3-pin plug at one end and a computer at the other, and some software/sensor combo that would read the (DC) voltage at the computer end. If there is no voltage, there is no power in the mains and ergo - we are in the middle of a power outage, so take action. Know of something along these lines? (idea is to detect power failures, while powered by a "dumb" UPS unit - one that cannot communicate with the a computer. Any other solutions/suggestions?). Binand

Course duration : at least 4 semesters, but the students (especially the working persons) are advised to not to take the full load of 5 subjects per semester, but spread it over 6 plus semesters. So far about 100 plus students have registered and attended two batches of this programme. The third batch is about to begin by end April 2013 and the registration is likely to close by 2nd week of April. I would appreciate if you could spread the word about the programme so that students across the country could check it out. Using grep 'AND'

Hello, I am using a script where I check if /home and /backup are present in /etc/mtab but can't manage the 'and' operator in grep. Currently I use the 'if grep -q "/home" ; then ......... then I do 'fi' and again 'if grep -q "/backup" to finally go to my commands. I tried to make grep do the AND combo but got errors as it works only on one line. I want my command to start only if both /home and /backup are present in mtab. With my dual check method it works, but I want a clean lean script. Regards, Rony.
