We could request senders to send subject wise mails. Users can subscribe to the selected subjects. Subjects can be Installation issues Hardware Problems Upgrade News WEB Server Mail Server Networking SAMBA Browser Email Firewall NEWBIE/Linux Toddler and so on........ Users will send mails with subject as say Browser: Unable to read XML pages Users should be able to specify the subjects that they are interested in and get the mails for those subjects. Thus the issues will get better response. Meanwhile, I believe that we should form a committee of interested personnel and get to the issue of properly sorting and analyzing the data that we have, and making better use of that DB. <preamble> This lecture was first given at the MCA day at VJTI, and then repeated along with a demonstration of the proc filesystem at the Linux workshop at VJTI Note: This has to be read along with the following files: /usr/src/linux/Documentation/ kmod.txt modules.txt man modprobe man insmod man lsmod man kerneld man ksyms I'd also suggest reading Linux Device Drivers, 2nd Edition http://www.xml.com/ldd/chapter/book/index.html </preamble> Monolithic kernels and Microkernels - Linux was based on Minix - Minix has a microkernel, but it doesn't do it very well - Linux has a monolithic kernel - Linux was written because Linus wanted to learn how his 386 works What's the difference? Monolithic - the whole kernel is a single a.out file - the whole kernel is loaded into memory - all communication within the kernel is through in process data structures Microkernel - most of the OS is outside the kernel - services communicate via message passing - the kernel implements this message passing - the kernel also implements interrupt handling, low-level process management, and possibly IO. Linux is obsolete - AST OS Researchers have generally settled on the fact that microkernels are better. This was decided back in the mid to late eighties. So, is linux obsolete? Modules - No one really knows who came up with the idea - It was first implemented in the 0.99 kernel series - insmod, rmmod, modprobe and kerneld How does it work? - All modules are not linked into the kernel at build time - Slots that have been marked as modules are left empty - These slots are actually linked to an internal function called request_module() What happens if a module is needed? The kerneld way: - The kernel notices that a feature is requested that is not resident in the kernel. - The kernel sends a message to kerneld, with a symbolic description of the requested feature. - The kerneld daemon asks e.g. modprobe to load a module that fits this symbolic description. - modprobe looks into its internal "alias" translation table to see if there is a match. This table can be reconfigured and expanded by having "alias" lines in "/etc/modules.conf". - insmod is then asked to insert the module(s) that modprobe has decided that the kernel needs. Every module will be configured according to the "options" lines in "/etc/modules.conf". - modprobe exits and kerneld tells the kernel that the request succeeded (or failed...) - The kernel uses the freshly installed feature just as if it had been configured into the kernel as a "resident" part. modprobe, insmod, kerneld? What are these things? - kerneld is just another daemon. - runs in the background, communicates with the kernel through Sys V IPC - loads modules when required, unloads them after (usually) 1 minute of no use - insmod links a loadable module into a running kernel - it must resolve symbols from the kernel's exported symbol table - modprobe is a wrapper for insmod - it checks modules for dependencies listed in modules.dep - it checks its alias file - it loads all matching modules, and their support modules But that's not the way it's done anymore - As of 2.1.90-pre1, kerneld has been replaced by kmod - kmod is a kernel thread, not a user space daemon - kmod doesn't do everything that kerneld did B-b-but why? - in the end, modprobe is called, so why have an extra user space process? - kerneld used Sys V IPC to communicate with kernel - doesn't use unix domain sockets for logging - code size of ipc/msg.c decreased by 40% So what does kmod do? - has a replacement for request_module() - runs as a separate kernel thread called kmod - when a module is requested, kmod wakes up and execve()s modprobe And what must I do? - kmod needs to know where it can find modprobe - echo "/sbin/modprobe" > /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe - or use sysctl - of course, you could put this in your startup scripts and forget about it - you also need to manually unload unused modules... but that's what cron is for So.... - the modular kernel doesn't use up as much memory as traditional monolithic kernels - kernel modules can be updated without recompiling the kernel - your kernel can be really small - Linux is not obsolte, on the contrary, we can all look forward to version 3.0 -- Scully: I'm seeing a whole new side of you, Mulder. Simulating Socket errors

Hi, Are there any linux commands to close a socket conenction between 2 processes ? eg, I can use the ipcsrm command to clear shared memory etc. Is there anything like that for sockets. Here is What I want to do :- I have a TCP Server and a Client. I want to simulate a "Connection reset by peer condition" on the client side. I do not have access to the Server Software. In my client software, I am doing a block wait on a select(). Under certain circumstances, due to network problems, the connection is reset, but the select() does not return any errors. i.e It is still blocked. Is there any way I can simulate this ? I have tried using the shutdown() api call from within my program to close socket communication, but that causes the select to return. I also thought of pulling the network cable on the client machine, but I dont think that will simulate the error that I want. Thanks Shahed.

I believe it is the " You have to help me " Syndrome. People believe that the problem they have is unique in some way and that there are others who are there to help them, rather are obliged to help them. They may be ready to pay for it. A small price may be nothing. We can put up a compilation of the different problems that were solved by LUG mails and a set of CD's could be made available for sale at writing price plus a small margin for people who put up all the effort. We can also incorporate useful tips and hints from advanced users. A part of the profits can also be used to finance future LUG activities. In the future, if the problems asked are repetitive, then only reference to the CD can be made. In case i type "How are you" and the user has a devanagari operating system, it helps in him seeing it as "How are you" But by langcodes, when i type "How are you", the code is passed to the user and he sees it as "AAp kaise hain" in devanagari script. In other words, the entire text gets translated in phrases. Similarly when he types, "main acha hoon", the english initiator of the message sees it as "I am well". I don't think, this can be in any way reinventing the wheel. But such a scheme will facilitate communications in the internet without any language barriers. You can put up your website in english and a chinese person who only knows chinese or an arab who only knows arabic or a Indian who only knows hindi or gujarathi or marathi, can see the contents in his native language. Well The present working of the web requires that there be several pages, one in french, one in english and one in Hindi and so on. By having langcodes, we can have a singular web page. The problem is that not all languages are like Sanskrit, which I believe has been researched by Germans to be the most suitable language for computer communications. Literature may be the most difficult to translate. But company reports, simple communication can be codified. I am again not talking about codification in five languages but in thousands of languages so the task is that enormous. I am planning to start an organization for implementing this. Hello Fellow listers, I have been thinking of making the tiny browser SCADA put up at www.smbd.org <http://www.smbd.org> multilingual, and here is the reason why: I have been planning to migrate to Canada and though the procedure is in the initial stages, I decided to learn french. Then I met an Indian at a railway station and he, looking at my french books, well, we started chatting and he informed me that in the french regions of Canada, you need to know french! I recalled similar things happening in the past in India. I once even wrote a operations manual in Marathi! Now what if say in a control room, there is a french person and un anglais! or suppose a giant corporation like shell or chevron wanted to integrate the SCADA or systems working across the globe and ensure some sort of interoperability from across the globe! Then either the entire globe has to become anglais which again is problematic. the Hindis will stick to hindi, the Arabs to arabic and french to french, japanese to japanese and chinese to chinese and so on. We need a system such that the interpretation in the various languages is automatic. I believe that having a new tags in HTML will greatly help in having multilingual support. The new tag <langcode> will give a twelve digit alphanumeric code. It will be closed by </langcode> When there is no equivalent <nolangcode alt="123456789abc" native="french"> which will mean that there is no langcode for this text. the nearest equivalent code is given and the native language or the language in which the text which has no langcode was written. this can be closed by </nolangcode> numbers inside the texts could be written by <langnumber> closed by </langnumber> Say the alarm tag is "Converter Temperature High 175.25". In french it may be "Temperature du converter haut (or grand) 175,25" {Note that since i could not get the accent signs in My linux m/c, the text is basically incorrect in french, but does convey the message} And somewhat different in German, spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Marathi and the thousands of languages across the globe. Now suppose the server or WEB PLC gives a message indicating the langcode say for example <langcode> abc123456789 <langnumber>175.25</langnumber></langcode> The browser could have the related messages for the codes stored in the language used in the particular PC and the message could be displayed in the relevant language. Detailed explaination of the working: A standards committee like say the W3C makes the langcodes. The body establishes a comprehensive list of codes for common sentences in every language. The table has the following columns: A langcode column as a primary key, The language which represents the exact meaning for this langcode, The languages columns which store the meaning for the langcode in that language, like englist(us), english(uk),french, german, hindi,arabic, persian and so on. the browser stores the langcode in the machine. The webtraffic is limited to transmitting langcodes. The browser interpretes the langcode in the native language. The user sees the text in users own native language. There are of course limitations that not every phrase could be covered, but such messages can be written with code <nolangcode alt="abc213456789" native="english"> No bhai there is no anglais code for this</langcode> Where the user sees the message in english "No bhai there is no anglais code for this" followed by "nearest Equivalent: There is no English equivalent" in native language. The browser now has to play a critical role, of converting whatever the user types to equivalent codes for transmitting. And on reciept to reconvert the messages back to text. If we are able to translate 5000 common phrases in phase 1 we can reduce web traffic by at least 20 % and at the same time have multitudes reading the web pages. Second phase can see the target go up to fifty thousand phrases. pppd error no. 17

I have a Motorola SM56 PCI Fax Modem (internal). I am using the driver given in the PCQLinux 7.1 distro (sm56-85.1-10.i386.rpm). I have checked that the modem is working properly. I configured kppp as per the instructions given in the PCQ August issue (Pg 112, 113). The only ambiguous instruction was regarding the type of authentication used by the ISP. The options offered are PAP, CHAP, script-based and terminal-based. My ISP is VSNL and I don't have a clue what it requires so I chose terminal-based. kppp dialed into the VSNL server successfully but after a few seconds pppd died because of this error: "Error 17: The PPP negotiation failed because serial loopback was detected." What is serial loopback? What can I do to avoid this error? Thanks. Parul

Hi all, I'm planning to purchase an AGP and a sound card for my home PC. My vendor has offered me Riva TNT AGP with 16/32 mb VRAM and Creative Vibra Sound Card. The other option is an AGP from Trident. However, the performance is not as good as that of Riva. I just wanted to make sure their compatibility with Linux. I guess when I used make menuconfig, the settings probably might have not saved though I saved it. Can't figure out why that happened? Now with the new kernel compiled in, when I give startx, the screen just goes blank and I see disk access for few seconds and then everything halts. Do I have to tweak some settings for the X to run properly on the new kernel? I was trying this on the Kernel sources that comes with Redahat distribution(Default).Is that a problem?Should I download the new sources and try again?One thing I should tell you that I have only installed the Linux kernel and it's sources i.e.the minimum system.Will it give dependencies problem since there are no other packages and libraries? An article on segfault confirms what many of us were worried about when Stallman started insisting that linux be called GNU/Linux. Read ahead: GNU/Linux name row starts up again Following a recent reaffirmation of Richard Stallman's that Linux-based operating systems make note of the fact that a large proportion of their software is GNU software, by changing their names to 'GNU/Linux', many other notable software groups have made their feelings known on the subject. One notable Linux distributer has reported that, of its entire distribution, the Linux kernel makes up 3% and GNU software 30%. The missing 67% has recently been addressed. XFree86 has requested that its name be tagged onto the end of the operating system name, and Wine, Perl, Berkeley, Gimp, Mesa, Python, Apache, Sendmail, Bind and Tcl have all made similar requests. All distributions using the name GNU/Linux had no moral choice but to oblige, and become Wine/Perl/BSD/Gimp/Mesa/Python/Apache/Sendmail/Bind/Tcl/GNU/Linux - or WPBSMPASBTGL (pronounced 'Linux') for short. Red Hat, on the other hand, is considering changing the name of its Linux distribution to `ls -R /` (pronounced 'Lisa Slash'). This would avoid any future changes in name, since Bash performs the backticks expansion by executing "ls -R /" and replacing the command substitution with the standard output of the command, with any trailing newlines deleted, and the -R switch to 'ls' lists files in directories recursively, thus producing a list of all files on the machine. Other Linux and Unix vendors are reportedly considering similar name changes, and Microsoft Corporation has decided to change the names of all future releases of its Windows line of operating systems to "Click on the Start button. Move to 'Find'. Click on 'Files or Folders'. A 'Find' window should pop up. Enter '*.*' in the 'Named' field. Select 'My Computer' from the drop-down 'Look in' menu. Click 'Find Now'. Kernel Compilation Problems

Dear Lugers, I'm currently using RH 7.1 running Linux 2.4.2-2. I'm trying to upgrade to 2.4.12. I'm not upgrading just by applying patches. I'm having problems with my ethernet card. Its Realtec and the old kernel uses 8139too.o module. I do make the proper selections but eth0 fails to come up and also vfat not supported by kernel. I just follow the usual steps make menuconfig, make dep make clean, make bzImage, make install, make modules, make modules_install. I've not done any kernel compilation before.....so may not be knowing some known issues. I also want to know what exactly should be selected as part of kernel and what as modules.
