problem with konsole

Hello, I have a queer problem. I'm using debian etch with kde. I'm facing this problem in the "konsole" application wherein if the command, etc that I'm typing overflows into the next line, it does not do a 'carriage feed' (so to say), instead the new text overwrites the currently existing text in the same line... I have created a group called marketing and allowed http access to that particular group ( following is my config ) acl marketing src "/etc/squid/marketing.squid" http_access allow marketing ########################################### how ever i now need to give certain permission to the group *"marketing "* ( like disallowing access to certain sites ... limiting bandwidth to this group ) How is this possible ? Hello, I am facing problem in sending mail from client end getting error SMTP server not responding checked it found that at server end (qmail) cpu utilization is high like avarage above 75 % with load average is also more than 2 also found spam db size is always 400 Mb which is always constant ..please suggest what is the reason for high CPU utilization / or because of spam mails takes to scan those mails. doubt with mutt/fetchmail

Hello, I'm using fetchmail+procmail+mutt with pop3 for my gmail accounts. I'm also not deleting messages that are being downloaded from gmail. However, is there any way to sync up my local image and the one on gmail? I mean, if I read/delete a message on my local box, then the corresponding message should also be read/deleted on gmail. I know that imap is a better alternative for that; however, before I start using imap, I have the following doubts: 1. can I d'load the mails permanently so that they may be accessible offline too? 2. I think I can do the above if I use mutt directly with imap instead of going through fetchmail, but then how do I filter messages (how do I use procmail in this setup) 3. even if I use mutt directly, will mutt sync back with gmail? I know that one can use thunderbird/kmail to do this kind of stuff. my query is how does one do this using fetchmail+procmail+mutt? Viruses Anyone?

Hello All, In Linux, I am trying to download InfraRecorder from sourceforge, a libre CD/DVD writer for different platforms. The file I want is an exe for the windows platform. However, when I directly save it to a mounted vfat partition, it is saved as abcd.exe.bin The .bin is added automatically so it cannot be double clicked and run. When I save it to a linux partition, it is saved as abcd.exe During the day, I was working on a windows machine in a user's office and when I selected a particular software for download, immediately the system rebooted and the virus infection being deep, had to be finally removed with a clean install. At the end of the day I selected another file for download from download dot com, and just as I clicked on the download link, it went into reboot. It was the same infection, but this time I shut down the internet before it booted up again and could restore the system to an earlier date. I want to know if all these things are connected and is there some major infection going around? Sourceforge could be using Linux servers, but I feel too scared to download anything for a week or two for windows, even if it is libre software. -- Regards, Rony. Knock Knock Who's There? This guide is to setup Ubuntu Linux with Worldnet / Exattnet. Assume the following : Username : abc Password : xyz Server : worldnet002 Lets get started .... 1. Get a dlink card - DFE-530TX (it has original realtek chipset which if fully supported in linux as 8139too kernel module) Note : There are other lan cards in market available under Realtek chipset - but they didnt work for me. I read about them that they are not original realtek chipset. 2. Run the following command from the shell prompt (needed to set the link speed to 10MPBS and Half duplex) $mii-tool -F 10baseT-HD eth0 Add this line to /etc/rc.local so that it runs at every boot /etc/rc.local mii-tool -F 10baseT-HD eth0 3. Install the pppoe package (google them) modconf_0.3.1_all.deb pppoe_3.8-1.1_i386.deb pppoeconf_1.13_all.deb 4. configure the /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf (substitute the username and passowrd) /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf ETH='eth0' USER='abc' DEMAND=no CONNECT_TIMEOUT=60 CONNECT_POLL=6 PING="." Write a shell script in a secure location. For example, assume that your script is /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh 2. Make sure that its owner and group is root and root respectively. chown root.root /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh This step is not essential, but useful to keep the script tamper proof provided next step is also followed. 3. Make sure that it is executable. chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh 4. Run "crontab -e" as the user who is intended to execute the script. In the editor window, enter data in the following format (for further details read crontab manual by running "man 5 crontab") minute hour day_of_month month day_of_week /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh For testing purpose, set up execution time a few minutes from current time. Usually cron daemon is started during system startup. You don't have to start it explicitly. Run "ps -ax | grep cron | grep -v grep" to check whether cron is running already. 5. Check the mail of the user as whom the script was getting executed. The mail will contain the output, if any, generated from the script. Usually these mails are stored in /var/mail directory. Special care should be taken to write scripts running as root. The ownership and permission of all the scripts or other executables are of extreme importance to avoid unintended security holes in your setup. Slow USB Transfers

I am using Gentoo Linux with 2.6.21-suspend2-r7 kernel. I don't know if I have missed out on some part in kernel compilation, but all USB Transfers seem to be pretty slow. I get an average speed of around 2MBPs and after a while the transfer stalls completely. Not to mention the USB version is 2.0 and the Flash Drives are working very well on Windows. I don't know if this is an issue with Linux in general. Regards, Amit.

linux proxy server query

HI I have to install in my office a Linux proxy server for a new lease line connection. The requirement is that through the proxy server i should have control over bandwidth management for vairous groups and individuals and i should be be able to restrict access to certain website for users and groups. Squid is best used here , but we need a requirement for a GUI. I am planning to install e-box . ebox-platform.com/ - do let me know whats your take on this. MTNL Triband Query

Hello, Im using MTNL's Triband service for accessing the Internet at home . I have never requested a static ip address from MTNL, however whenever im connected to the Internet, I see that my ip address is constant , something like 192.168.1.x , where x is the same all the time.I am new to networking and stuff so please excuse me if my questions sound a bit noobish :) Ok,so i have the following two questions : 1) Is this ip address of mine a static ip address ?. If not , then why does it stay the same all the time ? 2) If I want to host my website on my computer which anyone on the internet can access, how do i go about it ? . I have some basic idea of port forwarding and read some of the tutes on www.portforward.com, which were really informative, but im still not sure how i can host a website on my computer which anyone can access. Hi, I have 40 servers to install OpenSuse10.2. All have same hardware configuration. I have installed OpenSuse on one of the server and I have customized the kernel as per my requirement. Now if I install OpenSuse as it is on other servers I have to customize kernel on all servers after installation. Can I put my customized kernel into Installation CD/DVD itself ? So that when I will install that New OpenSuse, by default it will install customized kernel. Hello All, A windows user was using radmin to monitor and view other desktops in his LAN. However after its time period expired, it turns out that it costs more that 60K for a 50 user license. So I looked for a libre equivalent and found this below that works in Windows and Linux. It is distributed under the GNU GPL license. http://www.tightvnc.com/intro.html http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html On reading its docs, I found it to be almost similar to radmin in installation and use, but with better security. unable to get a nslookup on windows client

HI I am trying to test my DNS ( bind- dlz ) server ( 192.168.03.244) from a remote windows client ( 192.168.0.209 ) . I have a domain called sample.com . The hostname of my r DNS server is testserver.com . When i do a nslookup on the server for sample.com it returns me the following : [root@bind ~]# nslookup sample.com Server: 127.0.0.1 Address: 127.0.0.1#53 Name: sample.com Address: 192.168.0.244 when i do a nslookup for 192.168.0.244 i get the following on my DNS server [root@bind ~]# nslookup 192.168.0.244 Server: 127.0.0.1 Address: 127.0.0.1#53 244.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa name = ns1.testserver.com. but wheni try to do a nslookup for 192.168.0.244 on my windows client i get the following i can how ever ping to 192.168.0.244 C:\Documents and Settings\Admin>nslookup ns1.testserver.com *** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.244: No response from server *** Default servers are not available Server: UnKnown Address: 192.168.0.244 *** UnKnown can't find ns1.testserver.com: No response from server On my DNS server using the command "elinks" i can view the webpage for sample.com hosted on another remote machine. Hello All, I am trying to get Nokia phones connected to my Debian Etch in order to download clicked photos. I use a usb IR adapter and it gets detected and uses /dev/ttyUSB0 as its device. "pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0" Packages irda-utils, kdelirc, lirc etxc have been installed manually. However, from google searches, it appears that I need siefs file system support installed first in order to mount the IR device to a mount point. Does anyone know where its available? On the Debian site, its not listed. Google throws up pages in Russian. Could existing IR mobile users give some clues on how they got their mobiles visible in Linux?
