[OT] Postal estamps with emails.

Hello All, Many a times my clients as well as I face problems with sending small software files as attachments by email because the spam filters of various email providers block even genuine messages. Emailing has become very unreliable to send important messages. Many a times even genuine text mails are rejected by servers. There have been attempts by some email providers to use a paid stamp like system for emails so that those emails are not rejected by other providers. however this is a private effort and prices may vary from different email providers. Rivalry between providers could also result in problems of access. The postal department of any country is the Govt. flagship and is never private. Postal agreements are between governments of nations. So can we have a similar agreement on email stamps (digital signatures) by postal depts. of every nation where a national online account is created for users within that country and this account is refilled locally just like the mobile pre-paid refills. As a statutory requirement, all email providers must recognize and accept mails that carry these Postal Estamps and deliver the messages directly to the inbox of the recipient. Offline email clients like Thunderbird can carry an option to 'add estamp'. The estamp account holder simply clicks a button which uses a user_name and password to fetch a stamp and attach it to the mail. The mail will be sent only after the stamp is fetched so its headers will not contain any information of the estamp login/passwd. The cost of estamps will be definitely lower than normal postage and that may also encourage more senders to get net savvy. All stamps will be of the same value, say 5paise to 25paise per stamp. The high volume of genuine mail traffic will provide a huge revenue for the Postal Dept. The spam guards can continue to filter mails like they did before except for *any* mails from *any* server that carries an estamp. This will also help recognize many small local mail servers that directly send mail and are otherwise rejected by other servers. We can setup our own mail servers that will be recognized by all. Hello All, Seems as if, Mr. Eshwar's (hope spelled it correctly), hardware details were blocked. I, on his behalf, am posting his details. Intel's website recommends Mandriva 2007 to work out of the box. If someone near the easter suburbs of Mumbai (KanjurMarg, Thane, Bhandup), could help him out with a copy of Mandriva 2007, please do so. Alternatively, if you have tested any other distro with this hardware and would like to recommend that, please let the list (and him) know about it. Here's his hardware details. Offline Installation of Sun Java on Edubuntu Server

I require to install Sun Java on Edubuntu Server offline The problem is that I don't have Internet on the Linux Machine and so need to download the Sun Java for the Linux version and get the things and also need Postgresql and MySQL as the database for the same. I had gone to the java.sun.com and they have Java for Linux in form of Self Extracting format. I had also seen http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/libs/sun-java5-jre In that page I find that I should download http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/s/sun-java5/sun-java5_1.5.… which is about 88 MB which is too large for download as the Sun's site has only about 16 MB. I require the database also Postgresql and MySQL Can anyone give me appropriate pointers to me to install me in a ubuntu machine Can anyone help me Thanks in advance CSJakharia P.S. Hello, Everyone was over the moon when Sun accounced Java would be going GPL. We heard a lot of stuff from corporates, FSF, etc... but i didn't see much of a visible reaction from Sun's core development team, namely James Gosling. i just came across this, it seems a lot of developers wanted all of Java to be free as in freedom from day 1 and were pretty annoyed that it would not be so. Thus i did some searching and i found this quote from Gosling himself : ``I'm really happy we're finally getting it done (the only thing I'm unhappy about is how many complexities there are to take care of - don't worry, we'll get it done). No, I'm not job hunting: Sun is fun again! Why not a social networking site?..

Hi friends, When i first learnt about how open source development took place, i found that development model more amazing and wonderful. Opensource projects collaborated using Mailing lists, Forums, Wiki, IRCs, Version control and more.. All thru the web without any physical contact. And the important concept i consider behind an open source development is not the code that comes out.. Its the integraty and social equity between the people. (but not the intention of open source however). In todays world, many open source projects go dead because of many reasons. The main reason may be because of less collaboration or developers fail to hand over to the upcoming interested peoples. Why open source projects fail at collaboration and syncronization in the evolving Internet 2.0 web?.. I consider the main problem is in the collaboration mechanism used. Current way of collaboration within open source projects is good. But it should be made better. The hottest buzz word in the internet world is Web 2.0. In that the most talked is the community based sites. Nowadays, in news i can see many social networking sites created for specific purpose. For music sharing, news sharing, photos sharing, technology sharing, etc. Why not a social networking site specific to open source code sharing and for open source people connections?.. I searched thru internet to get one good social networking site to integrate with the open source developers world wide. But i failed. Is there a social networking site exist particularly for open source developers ??? .. It would be fun if such a social networking site is there.. ;) The first problem a programmer gets while entering into open source world is the collaboration. They get help through the LUGs however. But, what about the collaboration in a global perspective ? If there is no such social networking site (for sharing interests, code, features needed etc) for the open source world at present, why not a social networking site be created?.. (is there any plans of such like?) Dont make this a flame war please :).. If you find some ignorant quotes somewhere, please correct me.. Waiting for ur hot suggestions.. Hi, I have a Linux server working very well. It consists of a lot of software like qmail and stuff which I downloaded and compiled. And also a lot of configurations, users etc. during reinstall if I just use the distro ( CentOS in this case) I would spend a lot of time again to get the server in the same working order. I would like to sort of image it so I can reinstall it painlessly if it crashes. Or I can install it on some other server so as to replicate the setup. What are the best ways to do this? C programming - Processes, Threads, Plugins

Hi List, New Year greetings to all! I am working on a small project and want to learn about implementing simple plugins in C. I have already done some research on plugins. They are generally implemented using dynamic libraries ( dlfcn.h? ). My project involves taking a simple user command and process it using different algorithms ( based on user's choice ). Each algorithm is implemented as a plugin. The program should launch the plugin in a separate process/thread and wait until it completes the processing. The advantage of this model is that, if required, the program can use several algorithms simultaneously to process the same command. So I need to learn how to program: 1. Processes 2. Threads 3. Plugins I know one comprehensive resource is not available to learn all of the above. Any inputs are appreciated. I like to learn by example. If anyone has links / e-books / tutorials which teaches the above using examples then please post them here. Also, I am a bit confused about how exactly plugins are implemented. In my case, all algorithms perform the same task but internally the processing differs. So do i implement a common API which my main program ( can I call it a server? ) will use to communicate with that plugin? Once the API standardized, can people simply add new algorithms by implementing the same API? One more dilemma I face is whether to use processes or threads? With the newer multicore ( and the older HT ) architecture processors, what would be better to use? Processes or Threads? Ofcourse it goes without saying I'm using Linux, gcc :P P.S.: Anybody know a good resource for debugging using gcc, gdb? -- Regards, Dinesh A. Joshi

when i bought my acer laptop from Kolkata the price of my laptop was reduced as I refused to get windows preloaded and it came only with a hardly working version of linpus linux on it... It seems Acer recommends Windows but then they dont have issues if we refuse it.... They gave me a driver cd for Windows though and had none for Linux which was part of their recommendation agenda :-D Though I had probs initially with drivers but ultimately I found all the drivers on Dapper and perusing the Acer developers a bit and thts been awesome............. D-Link GLB-502T slowing down Ubuntu Edgy?

I had plugged in the GLB-502T to check out its web interface (haven't got my ADSL connection activated yet :-( )and I found my system becoming *lazy*. In the sense that applications were taking a longer time than usual to start up. The system indicator applets show no activity - CPU, memory, disk or swap - no blinking HDD LED - but there is a noticeably large lag between clicking an application and it being ready to use. So much so that it took almost 5 minutes for my desktop to load after login. Removing the router and plugging in the cablenet LAN brought things to normal. Another thing there seems to be a lot of bad karma associated with GLB-502T. <http://www.webservertalk.com/archive236-2006-9-1667246.html> Plus there's a bunch of posts on <www.broadbandforum.in> (it isn't working as of 11:20 AM today) that I came upon stating some problems to do with its WAN MAC address. Bacula 2.0.0 released [Maybe OT]

For those into enterprise backups, here is some news.. Bacula 2.0.0 was recently released with tonnes of major features, improved maturity and performance. For those who are not aware, bacula (www.bacula.org) is a network based backup and recovery program (under the GPL license). From my experience it is comparable to Legato Networker (which i use) and Veritas Netbackup and is probably better since the storage and indexing formats are non-proprietary.. With this release, the project copyrights were transferred to FSF Europe. Fedora Core & RHEL wrt brochure

The brochure at http://db.glug-bom.org/wiki/index.php/Linux_Brochure says: "Fedora Core is an RPM based Linux distribution, developed by the community-supported Fedora Project and sponsored by Red Hat. Its goal is to be a complete, general-purpose operating system that contains only free and open source software. It also considered to be the testing ground for future versions of Redhat Enterprise Linux." According to a Fedora Project member in December's issue of LFY, Fedora Core is the upstream of RHEL and many of the other Fedora 'based' distributions like Scientific Linux, etc.. Hey guys, Check this out.. This guy actually managed to convince Acer refund the money for the Windows OEM installed on his laptop because he did not want to use it!! [OT] Triband Problems - Anyone?

Hello List, Anyone on this list, using Triband, facing problems surfing the web? i.e. few websites open really fast, and others dont? (for e.g. mail.yahoo.co.in opens up quickly, while address.yahoo.com, or even rediff.com) Is is because of an upgrade to 2 Mbps? Dear All: We plan to organise an intensive two-day workshop on the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial web applications based on Free and Open Source software (FOSS). This public workshop will be held on SATURDAY 13 JANUARY and SUNDAY 14 JANUARY 2007 at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) in Mumbai. The objective will be to teach and guide participants through all the steps of producing an interactive spatial database and web map using the OSGeo Toolkit. Through the workshop, participants will build their own Free Map using a combination of open source software, copyleft maps, and community information. The workshop is based on the Mumbai Free Map project collaboration, and is co-organised by the Gnowledge Lab at HBCSE, CRIT (Collective Research Initiatives Trust), the Free Map Collective and MetaCarta Labs.
