To configure PPPOE follow these steps..I use PPPOE at my place since the last 2 years in Fedora core 5 and Ubuntu . I ll first describe how I did it in Fedora ..then I ll also describe how I did it in Ubuntu... U ll also need a lil help from Winblows... 1] In windows....run "raspppoe" or "pppoeconf" from start menu and click on "Query Services" ..Note down the relevant access concentrator name , and the service name for your provider. 2]In any fedora system , run "system-config-network", In the GUI you get, select New interface , and in the list of connection types, select XDSL . 3] In the GUI that follows , enter the username and password, and also other stuff like activate on boot., allow all users to activate the device etc.. Then click on OK , and click on "save" from file menu 4] Now double click on the interface you just created and in the "advanced" tab, enter the access concentrator name and service name you noted down from windows. Again save the configuration from file menu. 5] now just run "system-control-network" (from menu or terminal ..ur choice :) ..) ...you will get GUI to turn you PPPOE connection on/off. PS : in the menu;..."system-config-network" ==>menu->administration->network "system-control-network" ===> menu->system->network device control METHOD FOR UBUNTU... 1] download latest rp-pppoe (version 3.8 afaik) from http://www.roaringpenguin.com/penguin/open_source_rp-pppoe.php 2] On a standard system....just run "go-gui" from the package , it will give you GUI for PPPOE where you can enter all the relevant fields like username . passord, AC name , service name etc.... and just hit connect If "go-gui" doesnt work..... 3]Run following commands in the rp-pppoe-3.x folder from terminal... cd src ./configure make make install (as root) 4]Now try running "go-gui" In my Ubuntu dapper system, "go-gui" worked fine , and I did'nt need to compile anything much.... hello all. I have a machine with 2 lan cards one for internet and the other for internal lan. my isp uses raspppoe for internet connection. I believe there is a way to get my ubuntu, debian or knoppix system connect to the internet over ras PPPOE? one lan card has a static ip 192.168.0.2 and is used for my internal network. I have right now un plugged the cable from this card. the one that connects to the internet via ras PPPOE has no IP statically assigned by my isp. it seams to get it dynamically when I use their diler from my desktop. how can I set it up from the command line? since I don't have a gui based screen reader for linux, I have to do it from the shell. thanks, Krishnakant.

No serial/parallel ports, and no bluetooth/IR support. Each and every piece of hardware has worked on GNU/Linux, and HP was good enough to give me Linux drivers for the modem and the wireless LAN card. On Fedora systems I have had trouble getting the graphics hardware to perform at its optimum level, although on Ubuntu systems things work fine. switching off internet when not in use in Ubuntu

Dear all, I think my Internet usage (MTNL Triband) has increased ever since I switched over to Ubuntu! Earlier when I had Windows XP I could disable Triband by right clicking the Internet connectivity icon on the bottom right of the screen. There is no such blinking icon on Ubuntu and the net stays on even while I want to work offline. How to get this so that I can switch off Internet when I want to work offline? regards shiv kumar

PPPoE problem.

Hello All, A client of mine was happily using Mandrake 10.1 on his system for 2 years. About 6 months ago the cable guy switched over to PPPoE using raspppoe. So I had installed rp-pppoe for linux and everything was fine. Now they have again made changes like no static or dynamic ip assignment. The guy claims that he has only replaced a defective switch but now the rp-pppoe is not able to detect any access concentrator. Raspppoe works fine in windows and can establish a connection. The customer has totally moved over to linux so is handicapped without any internet connection. Please help with any suggestions. mobo - Gigabyte K8N-SLI chipset - nForce4 SLI Chipset processor - amd64 4400x2 Linux compatiblity: Overall, this is fine with the latest 64 bit versions of Debian(Ubuntu and Mepis) /FC/Suse/Mandriva, and 32 bit Arch Linux Onboard Sound - OK Onboard ethernet - OK Older versions of some distros have issues with the SATA controller nVidia gaphics cards run fine with the proprietry dviers on most. Advice - Not all applications/libs/drivers have 64 bit versions - in case of propreitry stuff, check for availablity, and keep at least one 32 bit partition as well.

debian installation complexcity, can't get installation menu.

hello rony, jtd mehul and all other friends. I tried to install debian from 3.1 rc 2. the problem is that I want to select 2.6 kernel and also want to get the menu for selecting the packages I want to install. the main problem is that I can either select the kernel or with debconf-priority=medium, get the menu. but I want to do both the things. I also want to make choices for packages to be installed and also have 2.6 kernel install which does not happen by default. can some one give me the proper conbination of the command line parameters to be passed? I have started the installer more than 15 times but could not figure it out. by the way if at all I think of buying the debian cds, should I buy all the 14 cd set? or else the first 4 will suit the need? I want to make one server setup and one work station setup with modest packages like office and related tools, cd writing, firefox evolution etc. mehul, I had requested you to download the debian cds for me. but it seams I have to do a setup at one of my customer this coming thursday. if any one already have the latest debian cds can I get them burned? or if some one have a faster internet connection like mtnl broad band with night time free download, I will be happy if some one could download the cds in a couple of days. else I may try getting older version from some where. thanks all. Hello, We are planning to make ext2/3 file system driver in windows with the help of which one can access linux partitions from windows in dual boot pc. Since there already exist many open source tools for it (some examples: ext2ifs, ext2fs), we want to make something extra and different. We are thinking of making something like "wine that exists in linux" or cygwin(cygwin i guess is just a simulation unlike wine which can run actual win exes). But not getting any exact idea of what to do. People plz suggest something that is challenging but viable(tough combo :) ) in one year, really useful (one may think why the hell one would want to run linux prog on windows that too on dual boot pc where you can just reboot, basically that winwala thing is just an idea). hello all, I recently changed a couple of retail pharmasies to use gnu/linux on their desktop. first of all they were very resistent because their data management softwares were working on foxpro and so changing to gnu linux was impossible. but the main reason for their complain was that their software had grown too old and they wanted a new faster and efficient software. I proposed to developed that for them in java. then I told them about linux, took a ubuntu live cd and demonstrated and they were impressed. then I asked them a simple question "why do you use computers?" they told me for their daily work. so I asked "ok means you are using the computer for data management word processor tasks etc. so it is not because you want to use some thing called windows?" one of them told me "windows ho ya kuch bhi, kam hone se matlab hain. tumhara system sab karta hain kya?" as we all know linux can be equally good for all the tasks mentioned above, I told them yes. now that gave me an idea. why don't we all linux users start a thread and keep on putting in feedback of Scenarios where we have practically seen gnu/linux working? I underline the word practically seen, because some may only say on the basis of what they have herd. like for example I tryed to convince another client of my company who already uses gnu/linux on the server to use it on the desktop after a demo of ubuntu. but he said "the system is great but does not seen to have autocad which is the backbone of his business". here I could not do any thing but to remove the live cd and boot the machine back to windows. so please put in your feedback on this. where do you thihnk desktop linux can go and where it can't. thanking all. found a tweak on ubuntu forums to fix this start ubuntu in recovery mode and then enter sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and keep clicking yes till one reaches resolution and then enter simple installation. it worked. so alls well that ends well sk

hello all. with so many topics and threads I came up with an idea. I can see some topics are like "how can i ... on my linux machine". they can be answered in a couple of emails. but then there are some project related emails and some are already being taken seriously. so why don't we meet on line may be once in 7 days? yahoo messenger would be a nice protocol because some are in the process of shifting to linux and still windows is used. take for example that radio guided sign post. may be all our friends can't meet physically in the meeting but jentelman, we all can at least make some time and meet on line? the latest issue was about promoting linux in the local market and schools. we can discuss a lot on line. what do you all think? if I am stupid, just delete this email. *smile*. help needed installing emacspeak on ubuntu.

hello all. if I have to use ubuntu linux with a good command line talking desktop, I need emacspeak to run with festival. I tried installing deb packages of emacs and emacspeak. but they don't seam to work fine. can any one help me do it? since my net is too slow, apt-get is not going to help any ways and my linux connection to internet is not happening because the raspppoe protocol is not getting configured on my machine with 2 lan cards. Chanced upon a rundown cybercafe at Aurangabad where some of the computers ran on linux. can't remember the flavor right now. But the chap who ran the establishment usually left the machines on. He only 'ported' the logos of Internet Explorer and MS Office onto the desktop so an unsuspecting client clicking these had Firefox or Open Office opening up! The guy told me most of the people didn't even know the difference! Those who asked were simply told that Firefox was the latest version of Internet Explorer!!! I think a similar effort would have all the banias and small businessmen queuing up to install linux. Just install linux onto a laptop with whatever additional software required and ask the blokes to find the difference...... Shiv Kumar

No one talks publicly, there's possibly only one to one communication. PM's to one another. hello, I am shradha, I am a new member on this list. Krishnakant Mane introduced me to this list as well as ubuntu linux. right now I am trying to setup yahoo messenger as Krishnakant may have already informed. by the way there is a strange thing I noticed while installing ubuntu 6.06. my net connection was on and the setup was checking the internet for packages. but with my 64 k cable connection on, and the setup completed, when I re booted my machine, I did not get x up and running with gnome. it came to the command line. next, I re installed the system and that time I on purpose switched off the modem. this time the setup was proper and I got gnome desktop up and running. what could be the problem? regards. shradha.

Hello All, Had anyone in the past faced a similar problem described below. When I switch on the power for my computer from Spike Guard, the ADSL Link/Act light of the D-Link Router starts blinking and keeps on blinking. When I lift the phone receiver, I hear sounds similar to modem handshake, along with the dial tone. Now, the ADSL Link/Act light comes to a standstill and I can connect to the internet when I log in to my OS. I called up MTNL on 1504, and they said the problem is with the filter. I have been given a complaint number. What I am interested to know is whether anyone has faced a similar problem, and, if yes, was it with the filter? If yes, did guys from MTNL replace / repair the filter? Or did they ask to purchase a new one? Where in Mumbai would it be available? __________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Installation voes.

Hello All, I wanted to introduce linux to an office so on a P4 machine with Gigabyte 915 mobo and 1 GB RAM, I tried to load Mandriva 2006 but during the first bootup process itself it threw a fatal error and aborted installation after getting up the first graphical screen successfully. Then I tried Kububtu 5.10 but it gave me a file reading error though my cd looks good and the drive is a DVD writer. Ultimately I sheepishly loaded Knoppix 4.0 in a live demo. While the CD reading can be due to media, the Mandriva should have loaded smoothly. After so many years of linux being around, this is not expected from it.
