Dear luggers,
I have SuSe-9.1 installed on my machine. I am getting problem in starting X server.
I am getting following lines(errors) while running #startx
(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such device Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing from list! Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
How to troubleshoot this problem.
I have commented the fontpath in /etc/X11/XF86Config in files section but didn't worked.
Red Hat has chkfontconfig to add and remove fontpath .
How to set font path in SuSe ???
While this is happening My Xfce is working properly.
I guess it must be font server (xfs) problem.
what could be the problem and so does the solution ????
Thanks in advance.

This is not the error message. Problem does not appear to be related to fonts. The problem might be the first line. **/dev/fb0: No such device**

YaST -> Hardware -> Graphics card and Monitor. If required move your original XF86Config to some other location before trying this.

check if .xinitrc is present in your home directory, rename it to .xinitrc.ol, give a try.

Worked! Thanks a lot, Haris. .xinitrc was the culprit. But it was blank file ?????????

Hi Harsh! I tried with sax by keeping copy of .xinitrc in home directory. But X starts only when I remove .xinitrc from Home directory.
So sax solution doesn't work.
Thanks to all of you for solutions.

exactly. If it is present, it should contain a list of commands to execue. This file should either not be present, or be non-empty.

IIRC, when the unix ym installs, sometimes it creates an empty .xinitrc. I think that's when you select start messenger when X starts up or something like that (don't remember).

well, basically the presence of .xinitrc in home overrides the global xinitrc and a blank .xinitrc prevents one from accessing gui. obviously a tip for RHCE aspirants.

Well, I suspect ymessenger is the culprit, for some reasons it created a blank .xinitrc.

yaa I am preparing for RHCE. So your tip will be valuable to me. I have gone through /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file.
It is installed But I checked ymessenger was not the problem for X crash.

yaa ymessenger was the culprit (philip has given the same reason yesterday and I have tested). ymessenger creates blank .xinitrc file in home directory. and That was the problem.
