CEP Workshop on "GNU/Linux at Work"

First of all ... we desperately need publicity for the workshop to work. No turnout so far, although the DEP people say its not yet time go get really alarmed. We are trying to put together a list of people who might be interested and mailing them the brochure. Would be great if people on the list also helped by doing the same. New RPM addition in NFS Installation server

Hi I have an NFS installation server to install RedHat Linux 9.0 workstations. After installing new workstation I have to run rpm -Uvh <rpmfilename> to update some updated services released after RedHat Linux 9.0. I want to incorporate that services to NFS installation server so that updated services will be installed by default. Simply copying updated files to NFS installation directory doesn't work. It even doesn't work if I rename updated file to older one. Could anyone guide me to achieve the desire result.

Problem creating usernames with dots

Hi I wasn't able to create a username with dots (m.vinayak) on my local machine which runs RH 9. Any idea why this has been disabled and how this can be circumvented. This was allowed on RH 8. Do all latest distros do the same thing or is this a RH thing? problem with libstdc++.so.5

i'm using RedHat GNU/Linux 7.3, and have recently installed gcc3.2.1. since then i've been getting the foll error for some apps libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory some of the places where i've got the foll error: 1. installed svgalib for graphics programming in c (with shared libraries) the error doesn't occur if i install svgalib with static libraries 2. installed blackdown java1.4.1. tried running the simplest program with only a "System.out.println()" line plz help! -- HACKER: Someone who loves to program and loves being clever about it. --- Pradnyesh Sawant (The Doubtfire) B.E. modem troubles

hi, i have got an internal modem, and it works fine on my comp [got drivers etc for linux]. now i want to install it in a lab comp, and that comp is really old [had to take apart three junk PCs to assemble one working one, and still not sure if everything is fine]. neways, there are two free pci ports and i have tried the modem on both. the problem is: i am expecting linux to detect the device atleast, and show it in lspci/cat /proc/pci etc. but it isnt. i remember harddrake showing a red entry for the modem [as winmodem] when i had not installed the drivers on my PC, but here it just says "cant load serial module" when starting up and doesnt show any modem. i tried changing bios settings to do the pnp stuff itself with autmatic setting. but despite everything lspci is not showing the modem :(( its eating up a lot of my time, and got to get this working before i cud proceed. please let me know if u have ideas on how to deal with this. tia, -- amit upadhyay

Hello Everyone, I am trying to share a printer connected to windows98 m/c. I am using cups to manage printing from GNU/Linux box. The printer is an Epson dot matrix 24 pin series printer. on the windows98 m/c printer is shared(no authentication required) and is visible in the Network Neighbour Hood as shared. In cups I tried few settings but results have not been encouraging at all. Setting 1 Deviece URI : smb://1.2.3.4:80/printer_name Driver selected was Epson 24 series. But after these settings I get error saying "Connection failed with error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFULL" The log level setting for cups is at debug2 but the error log also shows the same statement nothing more. Setting 2 Device URI : ipp://1.2.3.4/printer_name or Device URI : http://1.2.3.4/printer_name Driver was the same as in above case. After doing this setting I get an error saying "host 1.2.3.4 is busy or is down will retry in 30 seconds." and then the same line is also present in the error log. Printing to the same printer is posible from another windows machine. but cups is having trouble. Suggestions anybody. Thanks in Advance Shashank

Getting BTTV working

Hi! Has anyone here ried using xawtv on a bt878/848 chipset. (Im not too sue which one it is coz everytime i go hunting to get it working ... Theres always something else pushing me back to win). Basically, if i boot to win, start pixelview, and then reboot (WITHOUT SHUTTING DOWN) back into linux, i can get some kinda reception. Until then I just cant get ANYTHING! Also, somehow I find the audio lower on linux as compared to xp. But then i find it equal to that of 98. Is there any known plugin that can be utilised to gain audio ? - Satish

hello, I am writing in for the first time to this group. Please see if u can help me out with this problem. I have Red Hat 8.0 installed on my system. Kernel : 2.4.18-14 Setup : I have installed vncserver on the linux system. and i use the vncviewer(for windows) to access the xdesktop on the windows clients. (The windows clients and the linux system are in the same network). This works perfectly fine for one user. Working : Everyuser who wants to view his desktop via the vncviewer on the windows machine has to manually start the vncserver after logging in via telnet after which he is assigned an id for his desktop, then only he can see his desktop via the vncviewer where he specifies the id which was assigned when he started the vncserver. Problem : What i want to know is whether this process can be automated by the administrator so that everytime the machine starts the vncserver can be started for all the users in a sequence known by the administrator so that the id's of each of the users desktop would be know and only fixed id's could be given to the users to connect to their desktop. Hi, I want any directory or file created in my home dir (/home/sabu) to be owned by me irrespective of who creates it. I always do root login and when i create a file in my home dir the owner is root. I dont want to do 'su sabu' and then create the file ( I may be using mozilla ->save file as... ) or chown it later. Is there any way by which i can set the default owner of files in /home/sabu to sabu and not root....... regards, Sabu

How do I build a Linux Blackbox?

Hello everyone, I am interested in building a Linux blackbox. The typical distros that I switch between are Slackware and Debian. When I do a typical install of these distro, I pretty much install everything. Once I configure a system for a specific need I would like to strip off the unnecesary "stuff". For example, the Web server, GCC compiler need not be on this black box anymore. It is easy to remove them as well. How do you determine the dependency chain for the "removable" tools? I do think leaving the GCC compiler on it is important since there are patches and kernel updates to be installed frequently. Regardless the function of the blackbox, what are the minimum set of tools that need to be left alone on a black box system? multi-boot error w/ 2 hdd's

I have 2 hdd's hda and hdb. I have RH 9 on hda2 w/ grub as bootloader. I then installed slackware 9 on hdb2 (which previously had RH 8.) hdb3 also has RH 8. Slackware is on reiserfs. I have installed lilo of slackware on boot sector of / (hdb2) as I did not make a seperate boot partition. I have copied the vmlinuz of slack to /boot of RH 9 and have made the entries in grub.conf as below: ---------------------------- default=0 timeout=10 splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz title Red Hat Linux 9 (2.4.20-8) root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/12 hdd=ide-scsi initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-8.img title Slackware 9 (2.4.20) root (hd1,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-ide-2.4.20 ro hdd=ide-scsi title DOS rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 ---------------------------- Now, when I try to boot into slackware from grub, it boots into RH 8 *even though it is pointing to the correct partition as grub recognises the reiserfs partition type*. I can only boot into slackware thru the install CD with the root= option. Previously, the original RH 8 loaded up from grub. What am I doing wrong ? Why hasn't slackware overwritten the boot sector of it's root partition ? blurred display

the display on my screen is very blurred (both on command prompt and also the gui). all letters and even icons are very fuzzy. it's really hard to read anything on the comp. it all started after i installed mandrake9 on a blank partition. i'm currently using RedHat 7.3 besides mandrake9. it is on RHL 7.3 that i'm experiencing this problem. all entries in /etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 are correct. when i try to change the resolution of the screen using Xconfigurator, i get the foll msg at the end: "There is a problem with your X configuration. I am planning to get a new system, and this time am thinking of getting either an AthlonXP or Duron 1300 processor. This coupled with DDR 333/400 Mhz. [How about the Dual DDR thing?] After doing some online reading about the AMD processors and compatible Socket A motherboards, I am kind of confused as to which one would be good choice, and one of the most important parameters in selection is Linux compatibility and maximum usability under Linux. The chipset options seem to be: Via: KT400 , KT400A and KT600 nVidia: nforce, nforce2, nforce2 400 [this has a further option of getting either an IGP+MCP or SPP+MCP combination, with some further complications in MCP as MCP-T and MCP-D, of which I cant figure out thing...] nforce2 Ultra 400 [Dual DDR] SiS: SiS748, SiS746FX, SiS746, SiS745, SiS735, SiS733 After selecting a compatible chipset, I want to choose a motherboard offering the choice. To check for Linux compatibility, I searched for the hardware list on the Mandrake & Redhat sites, but none of them really give any information about these newer chipsets and boards. [I would be installing Mandrake 9.1] After considering nVidia's nforce2 400 and its Linux compatibility, reading its linux drivers page, I figure that the 6 channel audio etc. is not available under Linux. Also to enable the integrated LAN chipset under Linux, ACPI has to be disabled... what consequence would this have? I wonder what other features I might miss out then. If I am purchasing something I sure want to take benefit of all/most of the features under Linux. Any opinions about Serial ATA? IEEE 1394? Is anyone more than familiar with using the AMD line of products under Linux? I would appreciate if someone could spare time to help me make a reasonable choice. I must stress that I am keen to see that I can use all or most of the devices/features under Linux and not just Windows. Thanx a lot guys. It was finally module-init-tools which solved the problem. Even upgrading modutils could also have worked, but I guess I din't do it right. The xscreensaver problem still persists. Also, after starting X, all the text virtual consoles (Ctrl Alt Fn) vanish. This happens even after logging out of X. There is no console display, just a blinking cursor. I have enabled all sorts of dsiplays in the .confg file an tried. Moreover, bdflush is also unable to flush dirty buffers. And asks to fix init scripts. I cannot use y because it gives me the login prompt. hi luggers my TV tuner card (bt878) is not working properly with kernel 2.4.21 i'm using xawtv and it dont give smooth movment of picture with this kernel to try to solve this problem i recompile my xawtv but no use. but same xawtv works fine when i boot m/c in kernel 2.4.19 pls can u ppl help me out thanks in advance valmik roy

Are yaro I have created onw website , uploaded on solaris server. The webpages are simple html webpages. But somehow RH 9 linux mozilla users not ables to see vetical , horizontal lines of my table ( poor table) otherwise they can see everything in the table (except horizontal ,vertical lines ok!!!) What do i do for this? Hi, I compiled the 2.6 kernel, (patched 2.5.74). The kernel boots fine but modules are unable to load. It gives the error: QM_MODULE function not implemented. The module support is on in my .config file and so is unloading and force unloading etc. Any of the insmod, depmod or modprobe don't work. Problem 2: I start gnome and lock the screen after a while. I enter the password to get back to work, the system does not restore. Error message: xscreensaver: PAM grew by 68 K. (shown in the xscreensaver itself) Both these problems are with the 2.5/2.6 series kernel. 2.4.20 works fine. Anyone has any idea? -- Goldwyn :o)

ABOUT THE FILM For almost twenty years, the banks of the Narmada River in central India have been the site of a remarkable struggle for human dignity. Faced with the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people by a gargantuan series of thirty dams, and the abject failure by the Indian government to resettle the displaced, the Narmada valley has thrown up a unique people's movement. "Words on Water" is a film that explores the contemporary contours of this resistance, as the struggle to save the Narmada -- the Narmada Bachao Andolan -- faces its most critical reverse, a verdict from the highest court of the land, which places the establishment's seal of the approval on the Sardar Sarovar dam, a colossal misadventure with multiple, irreversible consequences. "Words on Water" is about the transaction between power and powerlessness in the most populous democracy in the world, in a clash that is at once both intensely traditional and urgently modern. For the struggle over the dam contains within it many of the contradictions of Indian society. The contestation over scarce resources, the debate on the model of development chosen, and the nature of society itself, which allows the powerful to cannibalize those lower down in the hierarchies of caste and class, and pass it off as development. Inevitably, the Narmada valley has also become a testing ground for the new mantra of globalization, as international capital comes sweeping in, looking for new opportunities (and unrestrained profits) in the pockets of the impoverished Developing World. The valley boasts of India's first privatized hydro project, the Maheshwar Dam, although resistance by the people has already driven off investor after investor. But more than anything else, at a time when violence rages like a bush fire across the parched surface of Indian democracy, when resistance movements in the tribal margins of Indian society have steadily taken to the gun, the struggle in the Narmada valley continues to take its cues from the Gandhian notions of ahimsa (non-violence) and satyagraha (the force of truth). So ultimately this is not just a film about the decimation (by drowning) of the poor, the deceit of a political class, or the complicity of a powerful social class, which stands to gain by the centralization of natural resources. Words on Water is about sustained resistance, a non-violent, even joyous, defiance, which empowers you to struggle for your rights, yet saves you from the ultimate humiliation of violence, in which the resistance gets re-made in the image of its oppressor. ABOUT THE DIRECTOR SANJAY KAK is an independent documentary film-maker whose film, in the forest hangs a bridge (1999), won the Golden Lotus for Best Documentary Film at the 1999 National Film Awards in India. The film also won the Asian Gaze Award at the Pusan Short Film Festival, Korea. His recent work includes One Weapon (1997), a video about democracy in the 50th year of Indian independence, and Harvest of Rain (1995), made in association with the Centre for Science & Environment, New Delhi. His films on the theme of migration, looking at people of Indian origin in the fringes of the city of London, This Land, My Land, Eng-Land! (1993), and in post-apartheid South Africa, A House and a Home (1993) have been widely screened at documentary festivals. He has also produced and directed Cambodia: Angkor Remembered (1990), a reflection on the monument and its place in Khmer society. Born in Pune, India in 1958, Sanjay Kak attended St Stephen's College, Delhi and the Delhi School of Economics where he read Economics and Sociology. His early training in film was as writer/researcher on a shoestring black and white popular science series for Indian television. His first independent documentary Kinnaur Ke Log (1983) was an account of a year in the life of a Himalayan shepherd boy, followed by Savdhan! Bacche Khel Rahe Hain (Caution! Children at Play, 1984) is about the remedial uses of drama in the therapy of disabled children. His video Geeli Mitti (The Wet Earth) was awarded the Silver Lotus at the 1985 National Film Awards in India. In 1986 he helped found Octave Communications, a New Delhi based production company, which he still runs. To support his interest in the documentary film Sanjay has also worked extensively in television, where his work includes the seven-part travelogue Pradakshina: Journey Down the Ganga (1985-86). Between 1985-87 he also directed a series of Hindi language news documentaries for India's national television Doordarshan, including Punjab: Doosra Adhyaya (Punjab: Chapter Two), and Kiski Ganga? I'm no Java expert (because I hate it) - but I think you need an application server like Tomcat to run servlets. And ASP pages are a M$ thingy, isn't it? You are right - but before that, if telephones are made a basic requirement, that will automatically enable access to the internet. But I suppose it is now easier to get a telephone line now that private operators are in the business. Then we would need some desi-Dell to make cheap Linux machines. And some big store(s) to start selling those machines with a credit facility. I think shelling out ~20K upfront is still a big hurdle for many in India. But if they were just asked to pay about 5000 upfront and about 600 every month? How much does it cost(in India) anyway to build a low end Linux machine i.e 5/10GB hard-drive, 256MB RAM, 15" monitor, CD-ROM drive, modem... How expensive/cheap/easy/difficult is it to make the TV as a display unit (instead of using a CRT monitor?) - will it save money. Lot of people have TVs! Is the quality any good? Hi Ajay Thanks for your reply. The reason to use wine is just to port those application which are not having any alternatives under Linux. I understand your concern and I fully agree with you that it is meaningless to run winamp using wine when there are various media players available under Gnu/linux. I am still looking for the solution.... Another rant on mailing practices ... I would like to request people to _please_ create a *NEW* mail when they want to start an altogether new thread. I just noticed that someone posted a message by replying to an earlier message and changing the subject line. The earlier message had nothing to do with that person's question, which why he deleted the body. But unfortunately, the mail client, dumb as it is, retained the "reference-to" headers which immediately confused my equally dumb mail client into thinking its a message from the same thread. Is it so difficult to just press the "new" or "compose" button to start a new message? Even typing the "to" address ... most clients have ways to automatically complete that field. Why go through the longer process of reply->rewrite subject->rewrite body sequence instead, that screws up all the threading? Hello Luggers, Am Experimenting with a new concept. FSF-OS Libraries. Am formulating one at my place in Andheri where i will rent out Copies of all FSF - OS distros....the big to the small for a Fixed Deposit(100/-) as a safe keeping, cause very simply i want accountability. Since i will be on travel or busy with professional issues, i am have the same kept at RenDezvous Cyber...a close associate of mine whose Cable networks i have been managing for years now. Will also have a placard put up outside his place displaying "FSF-OS library". Thinking of starting with all the major distros. And then gauge the response. Also, will have a list of these put up on the web for Students/Others to access. Any other takers for the same..??. Inputs on the same???. What say???. I tried inserting the module but it gives unresolved sysmbols for sys_call_table. Which header does this data structure belong to? Are you sure such a structure exists in the kernel.
