Hi all, A few questions....(If I have the permissions to ask ;) ) Q1. No new user is allowed to log in to wiki of ILUG BOM? (I wanted to, but there was no page for registration) (How can I create an account Q2. There were pages which had a list of names of certain members. I seem to have lost the link! :( ..Does anyone know whether it exists? Q3. Who is responsilbe for updating the ILUG-BOm website ? ILUG Site Problem

Hi.. I tried acessing the lug site at www.ilug-bom.org.in but i get a message that www.ilug-bom.org.in couldnt be found.. Does anybody else also have simliar problems with the this domain name.. I tried the other domain www.glug-bom.org that works fine.. but i think the photos are still under a subdomain of the old domain name db.ilug-bom.org.in As for the connection details, currently I am in delhi using an airtel(landline) 128 Kbps connection. I also tried on Internet Exploder but to no avail.. thanks -- Puneet

Overquoting and me toos - please stop

People, when replying to mails, please take a little time to make your fellow luggers' lives a little less difficult. Refrain from overquoting and sending me-too mails. Overquoting happens when you include a very large number of lines from the original mail just to include one or two lines of your own at the bottom. Your lines will almost certainly get lost. It's better to delete everything that is irrelevant to your reply, including old signatures and headers. Me-too mails happen when you reply to a reply for the sole purpose of saying 'me-too'. Do this only in the case of a poll, and not in any other case. If you do it, make sure you do not overquote. Standard rules of top-posting, upside down quoting, and long lines also apply. Differential backups with tar.

Hi. I've been trying to get differential backups with tar. I've got it working nice and fine except for one problem. If a file is modified after the last full backup, it gets included in my differential backup, as it should. But my differential backup also includes directories that have not been modified since the last full backup. These directories get included as empty directories. The files in them (rightly) do not get included in the differential. To create a full backup I do: tar cvf /backups/full.tar /home To create a differential, I use the timestamp of the full backup archive as a reference: tar cvf /backups/diff.tar --newer="`date -r /backups/full.tar`" /home Works well, except for the directory inclusion part. big indian banks dont allow firefox

sorry guys, i know this had been discussed earlier, but cant seems to find in archive. i wanted to know where to blacklist sites those openly do not support Firefox. the one recently launched by an indian bank (IDBI) for online share trading, http://www.idbipaisabuilder.in/ gives out this ridiculous message when viewed in FireFox, Sorry. This site can be viewed only using Microsoft Internet Explorer ver. 5.x and there is one more web site by another big indian bank, icici, their general insurance site, http://www.icicilombard.com/app/Calculators/two-wheeler-calculator.asp and, http://onlinemanager.icicilombard.com/icici/netproducts/view_policy.asp?Pol… though they are not as arrogant as idbi, but the pages above simply dont load in firefox. any ideas how to make sure they hear us? writing to web master, i dont have many hopes, unless they are pressured from above (sometimes i wonder, how these web masters get jobs, i mean, should it be the first thing on his mind to use a standard HTML so that is can be viewed from any browser?)

Problem in LTSP with RHEL 4

Hi I could execute LTSP on SUSE 9.1 succesfully. But I am facing following problem in executing LTSP with RHEL 4. I have installed RHEL 4 and LTSP on server. I did all settings as per guide. And everything is running well. But when I start client It get DHCP server but it struck at TFTP and it Shows PXE...: ARP time out TFTP cannot open connetction and it exit PXE. What should I do ? Please reply Neel

Dear All, here is my suexec log - tail /var/log/httpd/suexec.log cannot run as forbidden uid all that i got from google is my uid (89) is below minimum number allowed by suexec to execute CGI. and I hv to recompile apache to change minimum number is there any other workaround to do this other than recompilation Regards, Pramila

Interesting question. I think I would be doing it still. Monetarily Free Software itself is not as rewarding as proprietary stuff, but then is it not the love of it that we do it rather than 'other' reasons?

The subject line is too generic. To give credit where it is due, I use ICICI Bank's online facility and it works fine on Firefox. I also have an account with HDFC and cannot recall having any problems with it (though the last time I used it was many months ago). On the other hand, the site for the US Visa application really sucks on Firefox. Venky

Firefox Issue

I went to this website www.campus-connect.com .. It didnt display the side bar .. which has about , participating companies, registration, pep exam details etc. when i moved my mouse over the text then only the the text was displayed. I checked out the javascript console in friefox and it had a lot of css errrors. Some of these are ] "text-overflow" property not recognised Selector expected ruleset ignored due to bad selector. the site works fine in IE. Is there a problm with my browser configuration or is it a fireofx and IE issue. my firefox version is 1.5.0.1 thanks. -- Puneet

This includes making the desktop experience 'just-work'. To make that happen, a large number of peripheral devices need to be enabled namely, printers (laser jets, dot matrix), scanners, web cameras, modems, biometric devices, smart cards and the like. https://sourceforge.net/projects/oss-drivers/ is a Red Hat initiated (and Red Hat sponsored) project which intends to be a repository of Open Source Drivers for peripheral devices which are popularly used with a modern desktop Linux Operating System. The project has started off with a small subset of peripheral devices but it requires more input in terms of which devices are important for the desktop experience. Details for the devices includes make/model/manufacturer name (and perhaps if a website URL is available) To put across the device requests, one might use the oss-drivers-devicerequests(a)lists.sourceforge.net mailing list or the forums (https://sourceforge.net/forum/?group_id=157095) or even the Feature Request Tracker (https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=157095). XAMPP query...

Postfix and ldap

Hello, have configured postfix to query the ldap server to verify email addresses as follows: local_recipient_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/aliases,ldap:ldap-usermap unknown_local_recipient_reject_code = 450 The problem is if the ldap servers are unavailable postfix rejects all email without queuing for retry. Is it possible to configure postfix to defer delivery of any email when the ldap servers are offline. Honestly I have not looked for any such utility or rpm or package that will allow me to do this , but I ma now going to search for one , If anyone knows of this kind of feature for bash shell . hi I have installed Suse 9.1 on Server. I have one more PC with onboard Networking card with PXE. I have installed LTSP 4.1 on server. I have configured everything as per LTSP guide and NOVELL Cool Solutions Setting up LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) and SUSE Linux Enterprise 9 for PXE Support.htm but still I am getting error on client that PXE : Filename is not received... Now what exactly it is not getting ? What should I do ? Please reply Neel

we tried to compile cyrus-imapd-2.2.12 with ldap and kerberos support. mod_authz_ldap and ssl

Hello, I am running RHEL4 ES and httpd comes with mod_authz_ldap. It seems there is no support for ssl in mod_authz_ldap but I can't believe that. However, I cannot see a single thing mentioned about ssl or certificates on the mod_authz_ldap homepage except client cert mapping. I neeed it to work over ldaps. Can you confirm that is does not support ldaps ? If i'm wrong, what directives can you use to point it to the cert file etc... I'm not using client certs. I just want to use ssl between httpd and the ldap box for authenticating users to webapps. Kmail, Gmail problem about seeing own's posts...

Hi, For those of you who are using Gmail with POP and Kmail and are unable to see their own replies, upgrade to KDE 3.4 or later. They seem to have fixed this issue. When I first started using Kmail with Gmail's POP servers, Kmail wouldn't fetch my own replies from Gmail's inbox. I could see my replies in the web interface but Kmail decided to ignore them. Recently I switched over to FC4 and the default Kmail client fetches my replies. Alas, this machine is still on FC2 and KDE 3.2 :( Just thought the list would like to know. ciao! -- Dinesh A. Joshi

Net Telephony on Linux

Hi, I've been searching for a Net Telephony solution today and realized that none of the providers (atleast from the ones I found) provide a non-windows dialer. MTNL seemed to come closest with a browser based dialer. But there was a catch. The javascript of the browser based dialer seems to be IE specific; it doesn't work on Firefox and Konqueror. I also tried running all dialers (VSNL, MTNL, WorldPhone) with wine but with no success. I couldn't get past much of the VB runtime crap (esp. MS Forms 2.0) inspite of installing the runtime and manually downloading and registering individual dlls. Does anyone around here know of a cheap net telephony solution which can work on my linux system? Regards, Siddhesh

reinstalling grub

Hi I have 2 hard drives installed and I have WinXP, Slackware,FC3 on hda1 and Ubuntu,Kanotix on hdb Recently Windows XP started giving some errors. For e.g whenever an application(Excel,firefox etc) was opened I got a popup message "Windows-Corrupt file C/WINDOWS/prefetch/xxxx.pf is corrupt and unreadable please run chkdsk" The application then would continue to run without any problems. Especially firefox always gave errors and all the files in profiles/mozilla went corrupt. I could not access my bookmarks and history. When I attempted to do chkdsk It complained that the File System is RAW and chkdsk does not support such filesystem. I tried to repair this XP installation by booting from the XP CD. Here also setup complained that C: is corrupt and cannot be repaired. So I tried to install XP again. Here when I select the option to install setup automatically selects my D drive (extended partition) and when I change it to C and select delete and proceed to install new it does not ask for any formatting option and gives the same error above. Now after all this exercise my Grub menu has been wiped off and now when I start my computer I get 2 options 1. Win XP professional 2. Win XP professional Setup. When I boot into Windows my display has become 640x480 and this cannot be changed. How do I restore Grub to atleast boot into Linux. Grub was installed when Ubuntu was installed Thanks Ninad

networking help: Allowing inbound ssh requests. (MTNL router)

Hello folks, wondering if anyone has tried this and has worked for them? Need someone from the outside (remote location) to access a *nix machine here. Setup is: MTNL Triband (no static IP assigned to me.). Using Dlink DSL 502 router. LAN IP being 192.168.1.1. WAN IP is what the outsider would use to get in. Connected to Netgear Router. (WAN IP = 192.168.1.2, LAN IP = 192.168.0.1). Machines are connected to this netgear router as 192.168.0.X) Earlier when I had Tataindicom broadband with a static IP, the only configuration was required at the netgear router level where i did port forwarding of the service to the desired machine. The TATA router had a different interface and a bridge was enabled there. I do not see a similar option here with mtnl. I tried to allow under advanced--filters, inbound access to the router IP (192.168.1.2) since this is the one connected to the mtnl dsl router. It says ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by host. Telneting to same IP gets me to the mtnl router (linux box) with no worries. I put DNS entrie manually in resolve.conf but no use. If I dig the site and got the IP associated with site I can brows the site. Pls someone help me. DD

Segmentation fault, wvdial

i'm connecting to the internet with a reliance lg-lsp350r using wvdial.. there is no problem connecting to the internet but after a few hours it disconnects giving the error "Segmentation fault"... i tried in FC4 and in ubuntu 5.10... same thing is happening in both operating systems... however it is running smoothly on cluster knoppix 3.6... any suggestions as to how i can fix this???? -- javed...

Kernel Panic, Can't boot to rescue mode.

Dear all, I' am getting a kernel panic: no init found on my RHEL AS 3 database server. This happened after the system was rebooted after UPS maintenance activity. I know the best solution would be to enter rescue mode and examine the files. But I have a strange problem. When I enter rescue mode and it attempts to mount /mnt/sysimage, instead of getting the shell, the screen gets distorted with error messages. The error lines do not appear one below the other but diagonally. Something like this: errorno 5: input/output error some binary characters you may safely reboot the system now. Also, when I try have a look at the partition labels with druid, it works okay till the manual/automatic disk partitioning screen. After that, it says "Cannot read partition table. The partition table needs to be recreated and all data will be lost". We have configured LVM on the system with four scsi disks. Ther server is IBM xseries 365. The sytem alarm LED is off. I googled for the whole of yesterday night , and also called a few experts, but their solution was all the same...rescue...chroot...fsck. etc. I know the system is more or less dead with a bad superblock, but has any of you experienced the distorted screen in rescue mode before? And yes, please don't ask me to RTFM because I've been doing that the whole night. Also, getting official support from RH would take time as these servers were shipped from Chennai. I am not inviting any flames here, I am not asking any of you to do my research as well. All I'm asking for are inputs from your experience. Thanks a lot. Regards NMK.

I would love to hear Dr. Nagarjuna's views on this. To strengthen my point regarding what Mark Shuttleworth was talking about that day, I can site the example of how Ubuntu has decided not to include the developer tools in their desktop seed. Doubting Thomases are invited to view the debate on this at the Ubuntu FAQ. The need to take GNU/Linux to the masses has been clearly and repeatedly stated. I love hacking, maybe more than what some people on this list do. But I do _not_ have the time to hack around every odd problem I encounter. Just switching over to Windoze would have a much simpler solution for many people in my position. However now that this whole discussion is becoming more an more of a flame war, I would want to desist from participating in it. The sole intention of my initial post was to help out people who have been encountering the same problem as myself, and not to beg for needless advice from so-called 'gyaani' people.

Well I have had enough. I had made a simple post to help out the multitude of people who I know are not shifting or opting for GNU/Linux because of their IM problems. I am appalled to hear that people find my pompous attitude disgusting. Actually its me who should have been disgusted long ago. Its strange that people on this mailing list can not take some simple tips in a healthy way. People have given me loads of 'gyan' on how to configure Gaim, Kopete and the like. I can not comment on people who claim to have got them working from behind a SQUID proxy, but in my case they do not work. The proxy blocks ports such as 5050 and 5222, which are directly used by Google Talk and Yahoo!, and since our sysadmin left its not possible to get them opened. At this point let me point out that my purpose was to make a post to help out others, and not seek help for myself. If you find it unacceptable, then very well, but do not spoil the fresh air. So Mr. Philip, Mr. Joshi, and the others, if you can not stand some healthy tips, do not stand them, but do not spoil the atmosphere by your raves and rants!

Hi All, We Have added route by using route add <ip> <gateway> the added ip is in different network. Now the problem is we are able to ping the that ip but not able to traceroute the machine.. it shows multiple interface found. and if we use traceroute -i <ip> interface .. It drops the trace route packet.. remember WE ARE ABLE TO PING THE SERVER.. Both the machine are solaris machines.. Any ideas?? ssh as root?

hi, i have 10 websites on a particular server. Each site has its own user and is housed on the user's home directory. Currently, to maintain each site i ssh into it as that user and do the work. I also have to have root ssh'd in one terminal for restarting apache etc. This means keeping 11 terminals open and remembering which is which. Also when the net connection goes down i have to do a lot of work to relogin on each terminal. How safe would it be if i just used one terminal and su from root for each user as and when required. Hahaha my dear friend, you have got it all wrong. I do not do a job, I study in an university where every other Windows IM client works. Yahoo! MEssenger, Google Talk, Rediff Bol, etc.. Therefore the university has no policy to block IM. But not a single UNIX based client works. Not even Gaim, Kopete, Yahoo! Messenger for UNIX. Needless to say that I have tried using Jabber on Gaim. The simple reason being that the Windows clients piggyback the IM packets on HTTP packets and use port 80 for their job, while the UNIX based ones do not. Hence the problem. Those who have attended Mark's talk on making GNU/Linux more desktop friendly, we have to work out solutions that work on Windoze and GNU/Linux equally well. So do not talk about stuff that require obscure hacking to make them work. I do not have any problem with them, but laymen do have problems doing so! For your kind information a lot of UNIX based utilities like CVS are very difficult to get to work from behind a proxy (in my case SQUID)! I expect an answer to my poblems...

hello all, i am in a major problem at present, i need help regarding an error "OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writable anonymous root". Actually i hav to give a demonstration of my project and this ftp portion is a critical part of that. But the problem arises, when i uses ncftp for uploading a file to the ftp server. When i use ncftp command via a shell script, this errot pops up. Also wheni try connecting to the ftp through terminal by giving command ncftp or ftp, and try using any of the commands available within the ftp prompt, it gives an errot "not connected" tell me what my problem is and help me out. I have enable all the anonymous user related options in the vsftpd.conf file. KINDLY HELP ME OUT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. PPPOE keeps disconnecting

Hey people Will someone please help me out with this? I access the Internet via pppoe. I am using Fedora Core 3 and Win XP dual boot machine. Prior to FC3 (1 year), I had been using FC1 (1 year), Red Hat 8 (1 year). The connection is working fine with WinXP's (using default pppoe option in connect setup). The problem is with the connection and my Linux install - that the connection works fine for say, a minute ot so. Then though ppp0 shows to be up in ifconfig, ping <domain> (say, ping google.com) gives me "Host not Found" messege when I ping. Needless to say that my browser gives me the same error when I try to access a website. The funny thing is that previously resolved DNS (such as an on-going download) continues, but new queries do not resolve after a minute or so of the network start. When I restart the network using /etc/init.d/network restart, the same story repeats - DNS resolving fine for some time and then it doesn't work. I even tried using latest FC3 update of rp-pppoe, but things look the same. The most frustating thing is that things worked perfectly with the same connection since I got it in September till a week ago. Then my provider changed something that made the pppoe connection not connect at all. The guy kept telling me that my system had a 'virus' or 'bad sectors' and to re-install some 'ras-pppoe' for Windows. After I told the guy that I cannot connect despite threatened the provider that I'll throw out his connection along with the switch (which connect 1 more connection beyond mine), he sends his incompetant Windows guys who tell me all sorts of crap including boo-boo stories of viruses and what not. Eventually, I got them 4 lan cards and one more machine to test things on and had them admit that the only problem was with their server setup. Then a day later the incompetant guy at the server made some changes and now the connection works with Windows. But not with Linux. Since I mostly like to use Linux for everything, I am pretty depressed and frustrated. If anyone can help me with this issue, I'd be grateful.

How many times have we heard people complaining that its difficult to use IM services like Yahoo!, MSN, Google Talk, etc. on a GNU/Linux box, from behind a proxy? In fact, I asked the same question at the GLUG meeting held on 22 January. Well for those who are still scratching their heads in search of a solution, here are a few of them: 1. http://www.e-messenger.net: The worst of the lot. It allows you to IM through a web interface. As far as I recall, the chat room facility is still not available. 2. https://gtalkr.com: Its beauty is definitely unquestionable but beauty does come with its 'nakhra' (tantrums) as well. Flash player is required, and although its much quicker than the e-messenger, its not as fast as having the client on your machine. On Mozilla Firefox it keeps on asking to install Flash Player 8, even after downloading and installing it. :-( Moreover its only for Google Talk. 3. http://www.meebo.com: The most efficient of the lot. Although voice is absent on Google Talk, and the thing is still in the alpha stage, this is the best option in my opinion. So go on and convert those friends of yours (I have a few) who were complaining about IMing on GNU/Linux into the world of freedom. After all the best things in the world are free!

Debian v/s CentOS & RAID 1

Hi, Looking for some advice here especially practical ones faced. Situation: Have to start converting many servers (Rack mounted) from Rh 7.3 to either FreeBSD or Debian. Now someone did some name dropping and CentOS was added to the list. The machines will have hardware RAID level 1 and 250 GB Hard Drives and 3.0 Ghz processors and 1-2 GB RAM. The advice sought is, 1) Which OS to go for ofcourse keeping in mind that there can be compatibility issues with the hardware for RAID. Any combination (specific models) known to work without a hitch? I am leaning towards Debian assuming the freeBSD 5.4 may have greater compatibility issues with the hardware. Am I right? 2) Instead of 250 GB sata drives, should be have smaller drives? Dear all, When I try to start mysqld by service mysqld start, I get "mysqld: unrecognized service". I selected "Everything" during the RHEL installation, so all packaged must have been installed. When I do the same on RH9, mysqld starts successfully and I get the mysql shell. I also tried this on RHEL 4, but get the same error as on RHEL 3. I did a locate mysql and found lots of files containing "mysql", but nothing called "mysqld". Is there an issue with RHEL and the mysql server? Do I have to install it separately? Mouse help

hi Thanks for your replies on "suggest motherboard". I bought MSI K8MM-V. its working fine under linux. But my GIGABYTE Optical Mouse (GK-6PB) is not working under linux. Its works under windows. My friend has DEXXA optical mouse, it works fine on linux on my system. But the gigabyte mouse behaves the same way on my friend's pc. I tried it on Kubuntu (breezy) and Knoppix 3.9. I would be grateful if somebody can suggest me a solution. Manish

Experiment 3310

Hi, i have a sort of in barely in working condition nokia 3310 with me that I am not using. So i was thinking if i can perform any Linux related experiments on it like porting a bare minimum version of kernel on it. Selling it wont fetch anything that the experiment might teach me. So if u guys have any suggestion, criticisms (knowing the list, these will be a fare share ;-) ) please shoot them. And if anybody has a bit of spare time on weekends.. we can collaborate as i have no experience in stuff like device drivers and kernel hacking. thanks -- Puneet

Hi all, Anyone in the group has an idea of porting an app to a set-top box running OS-20 on STM chipset. Or if anyone has ported/developed an app for any set-top box would also suffice. 1)Basically I would like to have a general idea of the development environment used.the SDK's used? 2)How is an app loaded on the set-top box? 3) Are the SDK's available for linux/windows? 4) Is localization possible for such embedded apps? i m using postgresql... i want one of my columns to reference diff tables and refernece them in or relation wat i mean is that for the column foo in table foo_table the values should come from column ref1 in table 1 orref 2 in table 2 and so on eg in foo_table id foo 1 123 (referneces table1) 2 124 (referneces table1) 3 223 (referneces table 2) table 1 id ref1 otherfields id01 123 kasdhfaks id02 124 asdkjasl table2 id ref2 02id01 223 so is there anyway i can specify these constraints i hope i was clear in the description... thanks -- Puneet

Redirecting FTP

Hi Friends, I have a debian system with 2 NIC's one with a public ip and another with a private ip, also i have a domain which is been pointed to the public ip address of this debian system. What would happen is anyone on the net would ftp to the domain and reach this public IP. Now what i want is to divert all ftp traffic comming to this public ip to anoher machine with a private ip address. Someone said me that is possible through IPtables, but i don't know how to do it, i tried a lot but was not successfull, please if anyone is aware of this stuff, let me know. Regards, Rajendra Rait.

CLI <> GUI Problem solved

Hello All, I was trying out a game (on M$) that did not work on my client's pc. Ininitally it had a display problem as my resol. was 1072 x 768. So I went to the BIOS and just for kicks, increased the display frame buffer from 1MB to 8MB for my on board video. That helped me in playing the game at high resol. Then I booted into Kubuntu 5.10 and I was able to shuttle back and forth between CLI ( ctrl+alt+F1) and GUI with ease and no hanging or eratic display problem as before. :) Regards, Rony. ___________________________________________________________ NEW Yahoo! I managed to get a SanDisk cf wi-fi card. I finally got the wi-fi card working with a little help from google. The light in the card goes blink-blink so I know its working. Now I want to connect my zaurus to my linux box over wi-fi. On the zaurus the wi-fi card has a ip of 192.168.129.203. I have tried to ping 192.168.129.202 (ip of eth1) fromthe zaurus but am unable to do so. Trying to ping the ip of the zaurus from the linux box gives an error saying detination host unreachable. bug in Nautilius ?

I thought I'd confirm with seniors here before filing a new bug in Nautilius. I took a 8-sec avi format video in today's session by Mark S at IIT. I tried to check its size via right-click->Properties in File Browser. Result: The window closed & opened my home folder again. Notes: The file was in my home folder. I moved it to a subdir & tried same action. The result was the same i.e. a new file browser opened again with my home folder. I have opened the file under the other evil OS & hence it is not corrupted. The file is attached. Regards, Mohan S N

OT Sending extra variables to a php script

I spent the whole morning trying to figure out how to create an extra variable in a html page and sent it to a form processing php script . "<input type="text", name="firstname" size =" 34">" this creates a variable "firstname" which can be collected for processing in a php script as $_POST["firstname"] , but along with this say I also want to sent the text "this is coming for form 1" how do I do that . I just can't generate a text box and put the text in there and then sent it thats would be pretty stupidd ... So how do i generate a variable to hold this value in a webpage .. PLease helpp !!! Suggest a motherboard

Hi i m planing to buy pc based on AMD 64. Can anybody of you suggest me which motherboard should i go for? i need one that is well supported in linux. the vendor has suggested MSI K8MM-V. Also there is an option for opteron with ASUS A8N-VM, which has nvidia 6100 graphics chipset. Please suggest me one which will work under linux flawlessly!! Thanks & regards Manish
