Hi Yogesh, Thanks for showin interest, I dont have practical knowledge about how to alter the kernel for Nokia but I have good knowledge about what features are available in particular phone(Nokia), what OS it has and what are its limitations also how we can enhance it. I know what kind of hardware is required for transffering stuff to Cell (not MMS n Tones it uses different Cable). Hi Guys, I have had really bad experience with Nokia that time I felt cant I jus make my own OS like (Symbian OS used in Series 60 cells) and load it on my cell. Cant few of us gather together and build our own OS for Cell phones, there lot we can do with cell. While on move I surf net via GPRS and when I find something useful I cant save it cause Nokia doesnt want me to save it when its possible. I try to transfer Images through Infra-Red but cant cause Nokia doesnt want me to. I can only transfer Contact which doesnt evn take 15secs if done manually. Hi I need Red-Hat 9 installs. I stay near Thane (Bombay) ... so anyone who can gimme the CDs or get me the CD for me to burn, would be quite welcome.. I don't have the time/bandwidth/money to download 3/4 * 650 MBs over the net. So please help me out here! I have Red-Hat 8 which used to install fine on my older machine. But on my P4..Intel865, the setup doesn't go into Graphical mode. Then even more frustrating is that in the install options, I get NFS HTTP FTP The freaking local CDROM option seems to have gone to take a walk... although the machine boots from the same CD I have myself setup Linux on my P2 n times without getting this issue. On a forum, someone suggested that since it is new hardware, RHL 9 is the best bet.. instead of getting X updates. Don't know how true it is... I'm quite new to Linux.... sometimes when I get tired of Win.. I just go down this lane for a few days. Till linux throws up something like this, making me go back to the solitary option.. Gishu BNI

Hi I want to configure my bash with blue background and green foreground permanently. I used setterm -background blue and setterm -foreground green and put this in bashrc file of my home directory. No man, I searched quite a lot and found that there is no othe= r Linux phone other than A760 available in India. From what I gather= , the A760 is for 15000 upwards. The other one, A768 i= s launched only in China and hardly available in States also. Its pr= ice is around 32000 and is not scheduled to drop anytime soon. = Raseel. I have the following configuration. Redhat 9 with 2.4 kernel and using the dlink internal modem DFM-560IS+++. This modem drivers are compiled with kernel version 2 so there is a compatibility issue. Got an external modem and it works fine. However the Cost difference is 4x. So would like to know if there is any internal modem known to have worked seamlessly with the above configuration? problem with FC2 while connecting to net

hello people, i've recently done fresh install of FC2 on my m/c. i've kept the named service running, as i want to use local DNS on my m/c, but when i try to stop/start/restart named, it gives me the following error: ************************************************************* rndc: connection failed ************************************************************* i checked the man page for rndc, and also /etc/rndc.conf and /etc/rndc.key, but that did not help. i tried running "rndc" and "rndc-confgen", but it gave the same error msg as above. i guess i've forgotten to install some package or something, but am not able to pinpoint it down :-( plz help, thanks, Pradnyesh.

Ok methinks it's time to Reply. I knew the meaning of Open Source... but then I prefer to think of it as follows If you "value" add on to the source and then charge a lil something, then it is quite ok. But I don't think downloading the content of the 4 cds and then burning them onto CDs (I got a writer, so I don't wanna pay for this.), is VALUE-ADDITION. So when someone (I don't care if it is Stallman) wants me to pay 5 times this, I am surely gonna ask him to take a hike.. If linus had started charging a fee for everything that he wrote, I don't think Linux would be half as popular as it is today. Dear all, We have an opening for a Senior Systems Engineer, 3+ experience, based in Mumbai. This person will be spending most of his/her time working in our product development team. Our software product is primarily a messaging and server monitoring system, plus optional modules for network monitoring, firewall integration, etc. The product works on Linux and Unix platforms; all our customers for this product so far have been on the Linux platform. In our company, the culture is pretty techie. All users work on Linux desktops. Marketing material, product technical reports, letters to regulatory authorities, etc, are almost always done on LaTeX. Income Tax Form 16 is prepared using an XFig template. And so on.... The selection process will involve a C programming test followed by a personal interview. We will prefer 3+ years of experience but will also look at less experience for exceptional professionals. And please understand that this is not a pure "software job", because we don't feel that people who only want to code can be of much use in our product team. We need someone who will occasionally debug problems on running systems at client sites, so that this insight is incorporated into our product offerings later. And sysadm experience of heavily loaded servers is a big advantage for a role in our product team. I am using Red Hat Linux 9. I want to connect to internet using my re= liance phone (LG LST -340E). I used the rconnect-cmdline-1.0, a tar file fr= om reliance website. I even tried using KPPP. I tried using many possibilit= ies, but get the message NO MODEM DETECTED. When I use wvdial, I get the me= ssage NO CARRIER FOUND. I have to use windows only for internet and then co= me back to linux. I request detailed steps for configuring my phone as a mo= dem on linux. hi, Quite amazing.I don't understand why Xandros is investing in making products which are already there as free . There is no point in making a s/w for cd burning when there are good softwares like xcdroast... which will improve with time. and trying to sell it... It is a bad investment.... However, Linux has always had free (as in freedom) CD burners since cdrecord and its GUI front ends xcdroast and the Gnome and KDE analogues. And now Nautilus too has CD burning capabilities built in, so I fail to see the need for any proprietary closed source software costing $$$ for this task. I've used xcdroast for years now for all manners of things including mission critical backups, and have not had a problem yet. Hi I am very impressed by Railway reservation system. I want to know which database Railway reservation system uses? Are they using Linux on Oracle? In which programming language Railway reservation system is developed? I like console-based apps not bloated GUI apps, which requires mouse. I want to deploy such application for my client using MySQL but not sure, which front I should use. What about ncurses? Thank you Komal

Error while logging.

Hi Everyone, I have this strange problem whenever i do a ssh/telnet to my linux box i get this message, this happens for all users except "root", i tried creating new user and logging in with new user but i get this same message, pls if anyone could help me out with this problem. Hello Linuxers, Please bear with the long mail. I am a new member here and my reason for joining is to get an idea of whats happenning in the Linux community especially in Mumbai. I am a hardware engineer by profession and I undertake maintainence for the SOHO segment. I learnt windows on my own since last 5 years by burning the midnight oil, but my networking knowledge is limitted to connecting machines peer to peer in windows. My first encounter with Linux was when Red Hat 8 was the current one. It loaded well on my Celeron 400 and I could configure the internet accounts and surf online using an external modem. However, the printouts in my LX 300 were never upto the same quality as in my Windows Me. The OpenOffice suite took longer to open in Linux than in Win. But the major problem was that printer could not get setup in OO so I would create docs in OO and open them in some other utility and print them. Ultimately that OS became a learning experiment than a proper day to day usable system. Now I am currently learning the RHCE 033 module and was provided a set of CDs for Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS and they loaded well on my other P4 running existing XP. But it refused to detect my internal connexant modem though it exists in the kudzu listing as a pci device even with its proper name. The modem CD has linux drivers but even after loading all of them one by one, the modem would just not respond. The driverguide site gave a driver but the 180Kb something tar.gz file finally opened a 8Kb object file which I did not know what to do. Even in this OS, the print quality in my LX 300 is very poor compared to my XP. Again, Open Office simply vomits my paper out whenever print command is given. I am not telling all this to look for solutions, but to highlight the problems that are making Big Billy have the last laugh. I use legal Windows OS in both comps. and the rest is freeware office, firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware etc. I want to promote Linux to home and small office users but with this situation, I am in a fix how this dream can materialise. Many of you here have gone through these hurdles and are now master programmers too but what about dealers and sub dealers who want to promote Linux with their normal computer experience and knowledge? They are not programmers. Take any windows OS like 98 or Me or XP, it loads like butter and even when advanced drivers are not available, it performs general functions using its own drivers. A simple task like printing a word file in Linux is a problem when the Enterprise Edition in theory is supposed to be superior and office centric. Without modems, net and email which is a basic office function is impossible. The hardware I am talking about is no unknown one but a basic Intel based PC with a normal popular internal modem of a reputed company like D Link. I must add that the Xandros Linux installed beautifully before the RHEL was loaded and Xandros detected my modem and I surfed the net but again, print quality was lacking as in all other Linux I tried. An engineer cannot be expected to spend too much time on one system, that too for simple tasks of getting a PC up and running smoothly. He has to attend atlest 4 to 5 breakdown calls daily. Through the GUI, I fiddled with a lot of settings but got no result. As a result, Linux has still to reach the SOHO user as a fullfledged alternative to Windows. They are still on Windows. Unbranded computer assemblers that use and support varying hardware, still keep away from Linux. I have a few suggestions for the developers and OS makers, 1. Have some sort of unity within the Linux community where simple things like driver support is available to everyone across Linux irrespective of freeware or paid versions. A free version that does not function properly makes no sense. The scattering of Linux flavours that have taken place should be re-channelised into one main objective and that is to provide a proper and similar, if not better alternative to Windows. Unity is strength. 2. Is there any development going on in making a Linux utility that converts windows drivers into Linux drivers as per the Linux flavour and kernel? If wine can run fullfledged Windows programs in Linux, this too should be a possibility. 3. Identify commonly used hardware that can be configured to give equaly good results in Linux too especially printers, modems. Scanners is another problem with Linux. None of the flavours I tried could setup my Canon D646u. A driver converter mentioned in point 2 could come in handy. 4. Please have some kernel intercompatibility in relation to device drivers so that drivers written for older kernels work on new ones too. I read in the recent LFY mag that internal modem drivers written for older kernels cannot work on newer ones. Linus Tarvolds could do something about this? 5. Make Linux not only developer friendly but normal hardware engineer friendly too. Those who found my mail long and boring can send in their flames although I am sorry about that. But this was my experience which I wanted to share with you. As I go on in the RHCE course, I will learn more. Best Wishes, Rony.

What is supermount ?

Hi all, With allmost all the distros (except Slackware) which use the new 2.6 kernel, I see a fstab entry for removable medias (Cdrom/Cdwriter, floppy, etc.) like this, /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdwriter supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/scd0,--,ro,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 What is supermount ? When I tried this with Slackware (with kernel 2.6.7 included under "testing"), the kernel says "file system supermount not known". I read the man pages for mount, but does not mention any such thing. Nor does any documentation with the kernel sources. I feel that this is something like autofs, but didn't dvelve much into it. Clues/Hints/Did I miss something ? Regards, Rajen.

hi, there are two types of install in gentoo. One is thru a net connection which is not possible for a dialup connection or a broadband (i mean there are high chances of disconnectin in India lollll). The other is to build it frmo binaries for your appropriate processor.I would recommend the second one. My case study: I had a PIII system. SO i downloaded two iso's: install-x86*.iso this iso is for a basic install of gentoo.It is common to all types of systems. The second one is package-(architecture).iso which is different for every system. Since i had PIII i downloaded the package iso for my system. This is all u need. hi, I definitely agree with Nikhil. There has been tremendous speed improvements with my PIII machine.Till now i have been using Redhat and Fedora. BUt gentoo has impressed me a lot as it allows me to upgrade and resolves dependencies while getting the flab out of the packages.I took approx 3-days of R&D to get it working (compiling and installing and doing r&d). That was becoz of my ignorance of config files. BUt finally it worked and I am impressed with the responsive ness of applications.and i am having 3.2.2KDe and 2.6 Gnome. Cheers to GENTOO... Broadcom 440 Network Drivers for Debian

hi, I had installed yoper when it's first version had come out. Well it did not work out of the box for my hardware.Maybe i didn't have any knowledge about the Xconfig files. But one thing which delighted me about it at that time was it booted very fast and could shutdown as fast as win98(incase u don't have problem of windows hanging while shutting down).Now I am trying gentoo linux. It 's a superb distro.I liked the Package Management System of gentoo i.e,Portage... Dear Linux group, Linux has some inherent advantages as stability, cost less, and has hundreds of free software options. moreover no piracy issues. It is best when it comes to security and more or less immune to virus threats. Following is the list of the Disappointments with linux as of today.. May be in future it (linux) will over come. But it disappoints when it comes to deal with multimedia apps. It plays VCD but cant play DVD. Cant play OGG without using plugin. A/V chats clients are disappointing. Nero allows multi-session CD to burnt in windows which does not work in linux. Also unclosed multisession cd cant be read with out the CD writer in linux. And finally the least does anyone has tested beside knoppix the other live CD of Suse 9.1 pro, MandrakeMove 9.2 Unite to build an OS which handles everthing for everyone. Regards ID

Hardware wise there isn't a problem putting all this on one machine. I have 8 clients running fine off a Celeron 600MHz with 256Mb doing file/print (samba), IM server (jabber) & backup (rsync). However from the security point of view, it may be better to put your firewall & file server on separate machines. Personally I feel an OpenBSD firewall & and a Linux file server give a good blend of security & convenience. It certainly works with Tally 5.4. You just put the tally data directory on the server & modify your tally.ini file on the clients to point to that directory. need to connect my cell (nokia 6610) to a toshiba laptop (satellite 2590cdt) got all the docs... gnokii, gprs scripts.. blah.. blah .. blah... && read thru all the docs... got the driver loaded "donauboe" (toshibsa) irDA.. detected irDA, irattach connect ircomm (as stated in syslog) problem... i get no discover... rootTelnet limit in Fedora 2

Hi I installed FC2 on my PC and added "pts/0, pts/1" into the file /etc/securetty. I also changed disable=Yes option to disable=No in /etc/xinetd.d/telnet. It will let me login as "root" remotely upto 2 sessions. I discovered that the 1st root login as pts/0. After I logout this session, I relogin as root and it is pts/1 session. After the 2nd time login as root remotely, I can't login as root remotely. I also ensured the closed session by typing "last" on command prompt it shows all telnet session are already closed. I can login remotely with other users name. But terminal session keeps on increasing by 1 (i.e pts/3, pts/4, pts/5 etc.) and will not be reset to pts/0 or pts/1 except reboot the system. Debian X woes.

I have installed debian base systemand then installed the x-windows-system and fluxbox packages online. The problem is that startx is not present on the system. After running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, the xserver starts up but crashes almost immediately. There are no obviuos errors in /var/log/Xfree.log. Where should I look for some clues ? Query on shared libraries

Hi all, I know that you can export functions in a DLL in Windows. This does not seem to be the case in shared libraries in linux. Or is there an equivalent in linux as well. thanx for the time. Peer-Peer Networking in Linux

Hi! Is there any way to implement peer-peer networking in Linux just like in Windows? e.g. I have 4 PCs at home,one for each family member. Security is not a major concern as we trust each other. I want anyone to share anything on this small network. On Windows 98, I can simply enable file-sharing on each PC and the respective users will share their resources either: Read-only Full Access Password-Protected Read-only or Full Access Being a system admin for few months, I feel this is a simple and very fast way of implementing a small network. I have wondered whether the similar kind of network can be set using Linux Desktops. Any ideas ? ( Should I be using Samba ? ) Thanks, Nikhil Joshi P.S. One may argue that what's the use of a network if it is not secure, vulnerable to worms, viruses, etc.? Hi, But using dlopen, the problem of accessilbiilty still persists. The program using the library, will have access to all functions in the library. I would like to have selective exporting of the library functions to the application. Something that will be the equivalent of dllexport and dllimport in Windows. libtool, from what i read, does not address this issue. thanx for the time. Interisting Problem

I have a off line modem. The idea is that voice mails and faxes go and sit in the modem when the computer is off and modem is on. Modem is a MultiTech modem To see my fax I use windows software called Phone Tools from BVPD software. I do not want to use windows anymore. I tried mounting it through wine to it did not work.... Anyone any idea of what I should use to access faxes when I switch my comp on. How do I access my faxes. HP PSC 1210 not detected on FC2

I have a HP PSC 1210 printer. It used to work perfectly on Fedora Core 1 (kernel 2.4.x). I had to put the default printer and scanner drivers into the /etc/hotplug/blacklist file so that the hpoj driver could handle the same. After upgrading to FC2, the printer is no longer detected. The module names have changed to usblp and usbscanner I think, so I blacklisted those, but it makes no difference. printer doesn't get detected. Any ideas? Philip

How easy / difficult is it to set them up for a large organisation? How effective are they? How frequently can you update them? Is there an auto-learning phase involved? Actually Google is very high on humor, which shows to me that they are not just commercial cold-blooded types - you probably know that they have one of the world's highest concentration of PhDs in a commercial organisation. The simple web page, on which they often reflect global events through fun modifications of their logo (right now, every day is a new Olympic event) I think shows a good attitude. Can you imagine a Microsoft or Sun playing with the logo on their main site? There are many other examples of irony (even anti-Bush administration jokes, and anti-MS) they make through Easter eggs planted in the I'm Feeling Lucky option - but I don't think this is the forum for exchanging all of them. In fact, since these jokes are not taken down, it is clear the Google management tacitly approves, so they aren't really classic Easter eggs, though the jokes themselves are classic. Against this, I am afraid I find many commercial Linux distro companies totally short on humor of any kind. If anyone would care to correct me, most welcome. -- Vickram

FC2 booting up w/ a readonly fs

I have an IBM laptop. I have upgraded the hdd to a 20g from a 6g hdd. I have (had ?) FC2 on hda2 w/ home on hda6. hda5 is swap. I then loaded debian testing froma netisntall CD and then I loaded x-windows and some other software online. Partitioning of the disk was done previoulsy using tomsrtbt. Grub of FC2 is on hda2 and grub of debian os on hda3. hda2 is the active partition. After installing debian testing, I am unable to boot into FC2.
