Particularly since we would need C.As for doing a good job. Hello All, A few months back there was a discussion here on running 2 OSes in one machine and I had put forth a concept of having multiple OSes in one machine and simulate multiple computers in one machine to reduce hardware costs. I had suggested a system of having a motherboard that has a bios which will create seperate hardware quotas for each OS. Dear Luggers, Please help me with a appropriate sol'n for the following case: SRS Client ------> RH9 Proxy ------->SRS Server Port 80 443 SRS is a SUN Client for monitoring, it communicates with the SRS Server and sends stats and traps. Any suggestions for implementing the proxy. The client would connect to port 80 of the proxy and subsequent traffic would be diverted via port 443 to the SRS Server. Hey dudes, I am looking out for a working Pentium I motherboard. I have the rest of the stuff cpu, memory etc... If someone has a P I motherboard and would like to help a poor college kid (^^) then please email me on or off the list. I know many of you must be wondering why am I posting this on a LUG mailing list. Well, I was in the middle of building a Linux router when the motherboard died. Actually, the BIOS on the board died. I got a new EEPROM IC (exact specs), the BIOS image but unfortunately I dont have the programmer to flash the BIOS. So I am on the look out for another board in working condition. I got to the part of installing Redhat 9 on my old 1.2GB seagate harddisk when this happened :( Please dont brush away this thread as trivial. glibc error with jdk

Hi all, we were using jdk1.2.2 , further for testing tomcat - got installed jdk1.5 version , where we found some applets doesn't seem to work. In reverting back to jdk1.2.2 , i am getting the following error with java : Can't load library "/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so", because /usr/local/jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so: symbol __libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference Could not create the Java virtual machine. Routing woes: Netgear port forwarding to RH9 & FreeBSD fails.

Machine 1: FreeBSD 4.9 Machine 2: RH9 (with mtnl dialup) Machine 3: FC3 All 3 are also connected via a Netgear MR814v2 (router/firewall) <---> Dlink DSL Router provided by TataIndicom. Machine 2 is connected to MTNL ALSO. Problem: Port Forwarding(80) in our netgear router to FreeBSD and RH9 fails whereas same works for the FC3 machine. Firewall rules on FC3 and RH9 are the same. By fail i mean, the setting takes place but when trying to connect, it fails. When trying to connect directly to the RH9 machine via the MTNL dynamic IP, it works fine. both SSH and HTTP. SSH (port 22) also fails similarly for RH9 and FreeBSD but works fine with the FC3 machine. As remote management is ON, we can connect to the router from outside. There is an option to make a server the DMZ server. Even when the RH9 and FREEBSD machines are made the default DMZ, it does not accept connections. Any clues? Seems a bit bizarre frankly. Hello All, What is the concept of copy paste in linux as compared to windows? In windows I can save highlighted text or links in the clipboard and close the source program or editor. In linux, if the source program/editor is closed, it does not highlight the 'paste' option in the destination program or editor. Case: As a safety measure links from emails are never clicked directly, instead they are copied and then pasted in the addres bar of the browser. In this process if the email client is closed, the 'paste' option is not highlighted. Same thing happens when saving parts of a web page text from a browser to a text editor. So in linux is the concept of copy based on the an active link only as compared to windows, where a seperate memory pad is used to store the text? opening attachments with pine

I've recently upgraded from FC2 to FC3 and am now having trouble opening attachments through pine. This is the flow of events after asking pine to display an attachment: 1. pine saves attachment to /tmp 2. pine spawns attachment viewer 3. pine deletes attachment from /tmp 4. attachment viewer finally shows up and cannot find the attachment Current version of pine - 4.63. A lot of articles on the net talking about opening attachments in pine, but none of them address this issue. Ideas on what I can try? My current solution is to have a shell script copy the file out of /tmp and then spawn the attachment viewer with the new filename. Philip

Hi All I am working on Debian sarge 2.6.11,When I connent to internet, through my Reliance Landline Connection, all the desktop shortcuts stop responding whereas the task bar Icons respond mostly though sometimes they to turn obstinate. Initially i thought it could be because of the Firestarter as when i tried to log in through Terminal 1 or any other tty i get characters like this running that i cannot run any command. IN=PP0 OUT= MAC= SRC=220.226.9.18 DST=220.226.6.188 LEN=48 TOS=0X00 TTL=45 ID=41026 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=265 1 DPT=445 WINDOW=16384 As soon as i killl pppd after sometime the system may work. I neither see any heavy disk activity during all this. Tried google but could not locate the same error somebody facing too. A project idea

This is a quite simple and basic idea i had today. Some of you may have noticed that when oss developers are releasing it they have to put in a lot of time to design a proper website for it. So if we could have a bunch of php scripts together that would do the following things(more if you have suggestions): - Automatically generate common links like Screenshots, About, Features, Download, Help. - The developer just has to put download files in a directory called downloads or something and then the install script will parse the directory contents and generate links for download. Overtime it could be modified to recognise extensions such as deb & rpm & tar.gz and put 'source', or 'debian woody' - The install script will generate html files so that the developer can add more program specific html - It will be modular using include() - Other directories like faq or help or screenshots will also be passed Please tell me what you think about it. But the incident experienced here is applicable to windows XP specifically. (as far as I have experienced!) Secondly, I use, KDE 3.1-10 as my desktop environment under Redhat Linux 9.0 and I have a utility called Klipper This is a good utility which store the previous copied text and enables a number of entries (which can be customized). Doubt that. You can sling a pci bus onto almost anything. The 2GB limit is because of the bios. Once you boot with a floppy linux will work with any disk. Also memtest will fail if the bios settings are not suitable for the ram. Afaik linux will not interfere with the mem timings. Check the bios setup. Insert maximum wait states to slow down ram access. Replace the ram if you can find some of those ancient pieces. Patch Kernel 2.6.11

Hi, I am using Slackware 10.1. The default kernel is 2.6.10. Slackware gives the unmodified kernel source along with the Source CDs. I installed kernel source 2.6.10. Then I downloaded the patch for kernel 2.6.11 from kernel.org and successfully applied it. After that I apply patch 2.6.11.1 which also got applied, but after that patch 2.6.11.2 gives me error. I tried it many times and checked that I am not making any mistakes, but every time 2.6.11.2 gives me error. When trying to apply patch-2.6.11.2, I get the following error. (I have tried with both the patch kernel script, as well as using the patch command directly, both with same result), root@localhost:~/linux-2.6.10# ./scripts/patch-kernel . . patch-2.6.11.2.bz2 Current kernel version is 2.6.11.1 (Woozy Numbat) Applying patch-2.6.11.2 (bzip2)... 1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file Makefile.rej Reversed (or previously applied) patch detected! Skipping patch. 3 out of 3 hunks ignored -- saving rejects to file drivers/input/serio/i8042-x86ia64io.h.rej Reversed (or previously applied) patch detected! GTK+ & C on winblows...

Hi guys, Due to unfortunate circumstances beyond my control I have been unwillingly forced to use GTK+ on the winblows platform. Now I miss my ol' RPMs, gcc etc... and I have reached a dead end!! I don't know what to install and where! I have downloaded the following things: 1. This is not possible at the moment with a Windows or Mac OS. But GNU/Linux is very much of an option. Also comes bundled with an office suite, a browser and some other basic applications. You'll need a 256 MB thumb drive to install all of this. Authors bounce off topics after just touching the surface. It's just too big and too many distros. But a book will help you get your installation up. Then you need access to internet => google / mailing lists. Internet ex plodder would not connect to the central server, although routes and ports were absolutely fine. so check the router, check the nics, call up regional hub at 0230 hrs. reinstall win2k. Finally re-reinstall win2k on about 25 machines with a cd from another branch everything works. The cd that came from the software repository has the latest patches and was supposed to be installed on all machines but was delayed for some reason. Hey Sriram, I work on COM too but its not with VB, we use VC. I was looking for a COM eqivalent in linux and CORBA is the closest u can get. Hi All, I am working on creating a localized distribution of Linux, and was hoping to add the Provider database for India to the KPPP package. That way, we can have KPPP preconfigured for various Indian ISP's for various locations in India. Linux users in India could be spared from re-inventing the wheel each time they want to connect to an ISP. For this, we need to get details from any connections which work fine. You guys can help me with this - and this will eventually help all of us. Could you guys mail me your $HOME/.kde/share/config/kppprc? (of course with the username / password removed ), and any other valuable experience + setup details that you thing could be helpful to others? Hopefully, we would get all the "correct" setttings included in the next version of KPPP, get the settings verified, and connecting to various Indian ISP's will be smooth in future. Till such time, I can probably sort them by ISP/Locations and keep the file on the internet somewhere. VPN through pptpconfig.

Hi, I am trying to configure VPN through RedHat Fedora core 3 using pptpconfig. But land up with this error Using interface ppp0pptpconfig: monitoring interface ppp0 Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2 anon warn[open_inetsock:pptp_callmgr.c:317]: connect: Connection refused anon fatal[callmgr_main:pptp_callmgr.c:123]: Could not open control connection to *****the ip address of the vpn server******* anon fatal[open_callmgr:pptp.c:426]: Call manager exited with error 256 Modem hangup Connection terminated. pptpconfig: pppd process terminated by signal 16 (failed) pptpconfig: SIGUSR1 Is it that i can only connect pptpconfig using an dialup or adsl connection, what i am trying is to connect the VPN using my local LAN, is that possible or i am just wasting my time. If this is the case any other software through which i can achive my goal. Also i forgot to mention the VPN server i am trying to connect is a Windows box. linux packet drops

Hi, We are using Snort on Linux in the binary packet capture mode (capture and log in tcpdump format). We find packet drops even at 5 Mbps bandwidth which we feel is very low for the hardware we are using. We would be grateful if you can provide any suggestions on the issue. Hardware used: HP Proliant DL 140 G2. Dual processor, processor speed 2.8 GHz with 512MB RAM and 72 GB SATA HDD, Gigabit network card. Operating system: Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES Version 3. Snort version: Snort 2.3.0 The OS is a default installation. We are not running any software other than snort on the system. Observations: We find that the drop is related to HDD writes. If there are no hard disk writes, then there is no drop even at 80 Mbps. We tested this by using a rule in snort which rarely matches, so that snort hardly logs any packets. We also found that the drop increases when the I/O is high, irrespective of whether it is being done by the same process (snort) or a totally unrelated one. We created a high I/O scenario by doing copy of a huge file (3GB) periodically while snort is running. Even this triggered packet drops. So, to summarize, we see packet drops in sniffing whenever there is disk I/O happening. We do not suspect the HDD of the machine, as we were able to simulate the problem in two other totally different systems also. Regards, Sonali

AFAIK, Theo De Raadt was kicked out of the BSD group because he was considered to be very difficult to work with. "Free for All" or one of the other books that document open source mentions this. This rant against Linux sounds like a case of sour grapes. Also, it requires a special kind of personality to build a community around open source software and the ability to collaborate and inspire trust in others is essential. Hardware/Bios Issue: AGP Card causes memory test to hang

Ok, so maybe not the best forum, but I have seen hardware related queries, so following the precedent. Hoping someone can help me out. Hardware: motherboard: Asus ASUS A7266-MX-UAYZ with onboard Video/Lan/Sound and AGP slot. Processor: ATHLON xp 2100+ Video Card: VideoGF FX 5200 256 MB AGP card. Memory: 2 Dimms of 512 MB Each (different companies) but 400 Mhz totaling 1024 MB. Problem: The AGP Card causes the system to hang when it reaches the memory test stage. If I keep pressing "del", I can get into the bios. If I keep pressing ESC, I can get it to skip the memory test and the system comes up. If I fail to do the above, the keyboard is rendered lifeless and I have to hard boot. Without the AGP Card it works fine and the memory test takes place and system comes up OK. Any clues? KDE upgrade issue

HI, im trying to install kde 3.4 on fedora core1 system which is currently running kde 3.1 I downloaded the three required packages arts, kdebase and kdelibs. I installed arts first and then kdelibs and they got installed without any errors. But after that when i tried to install the kdebase package the configure script gave an error that kdelibs must be installed first. Do i need to do something regarding the old kde or wat??I ran the configure script of arts and kdelibs with no options except --with-qt-dir=/home/puneet/qt3.4/ option which is the path to the version of qt i wana use.. WHat coudl be the problem??? Please reply quickly, Puneet P>S> I did all this coz umbrello(UML designer) needed a beeter version of qt than i had and then after i installed qt in umbrello i got an error that kde must be compiled with this new version of kde hence i downloaded the new version of kde. If you do, then let me know and I will send you prospective clients." At the end of the relatively long conversation, he came up with the most thought provoking comparison between linux and windows. He said, "Agreed, microsoft has many problems and is unstable etc, but you see, Microsoft Windows is like a woman, has it's problems, gets infected but still people want it, whereas Linux is a 'hijra' who cannot get a virus but still nobody wants it". I am not kidding. Those were the exact words. I was too caught up with interpreting the comparison to discuss anything else. And am still thinking, if windows is woman, linux is eunuch, who is the male in the scheme of things?. Well, it takes all kinds to make the world. First Customer Put on Linux

Hello All, Today I got my first customer to get into linux. The machine was an Intel Original GLVA with a Celeron 2 Ghz. cpu, 256 Mb RAM. The distro loaded was Mandrake 10.1. The sound device got detected smoothly and it gave the boot up music too on login. The system uses a LAN cablenet as well as a dialup (when the lan is down). I used the gui to setup the same in Mandrake. This cablenet is luckily direct with no PPPoE. The ip address was a static one and in windows, it has a domain and host name in the dns setting that is necessary. However that was a mistake to do in linux as the search domain is different from domain entry in windows. The eth0 would not connect to the net. Then I created the ppp0 connection and that too did not connect to the net. The problem was that the ppp0 picked up the dns server entry of the eth0. Both the connections were removed and first the ppp0 was setup and it went on the net smoothly. Then the eth0 was created again but this time, no names were used at all. Omly ip, subnet mask, gateway and dns-server-ip. That did the trick and the eth0 was up and running on the net. There is a very nice control on the task bar for disconnecting and reconnecting the eth0 link and that adds added safety of disconnecting the link when the user is not on the net. It reconnects successfully. Thunderbird, firefox and firestarter was added. One nice feature of the firestarter firewall is that if you leave the program running in the task bar and reboot, then on login, it asks the user to enter the root password and starts the firewall, like a reminder. There was one problem though on reboot. The sound server gave startup errors and the sound went dead. It was getting too late to investigate but It must be something about the automatic bios setting that was discussed by some members here. Its irq may be shifting??? The video player does not play VCDs now. But that is a minor issue and the cus. will use windows for multimedia for the time being. Maybe on my next visit.... What surprised me was the ease with which the cust. took to linux in one shot inspite of the various logins and password entries. I had not anticipated that. Asrock MB refuses Mandrake.

Hello All, Mandrake 10.1 does not install on the Asrock 845 chipset P 4i45 GV mobo. On booting from the first CD, it gave the initial 2 boot options of direct install/upgrade or custom. Then the first loading of the kernel starts and then there is a screen with a blue title bar and a task bar saying "Welcome to Mandrake...." Thats it. The system does not move further. Even Ctrl+Alt+Del does not reboot the system. To cross check linux compatibility with this mobo, live Knoppix 3.2 was tried and it booted fine and gave me the desktop and even played mp3s from the hdd. In case this may be of any help, the first line in the knoppix boot up text messages was "PCI Device 00:f1.1 not available due to conflicts". Any clues? I was under the impression that it is just Linux(GNU/Linux) and is CUI based. I had no idea that developments had taken place. I was going through magazines like PCQUEST, DIGIT and found that DIGIT had given Redhat Linux 9.0 CD's to subscribers. Luckily one my friend was the subscriber of DIGIT and had obtained the CD. I wanted to try this out and ultimately had messed up my computer. Later on went through manuals and stuff and got it set right...Now I use Redhat Linux 9.0 My friend and I have installed Redhat Linux 9.0 in many of our friend's computers FOR FREE.... So shall we call them customers?? NO...nah!..not at all... Dear Rajeev, Would it be possible for u to talk on Gaming on Linux in this meet. Thats the only reason why windows is still on my machine and many others'. I tried wine and cedega, though cedega was comparatively better, i never got the games to work like they did on windows. I also tried a game ported to linux by loki games, again the sound was not working though everthing else was really great once i got it to work (after invoking the game with an LD_ASSUME_KERNEL 2.4). Maybe my machine is not good enough, its a PIII 1GHz with 256MB RAM and 64MB Nvidia GeForce2 MX400 card. Really looking forward to ur talk (whenever it is) Anand.

Any way the entry in menu.lst is root (hd0,11) rootnoverify (hd0,10) chainloader +1 This will load the bootloader installed at the beginning of this partition and should give you the lilo menu. BIG FAT WARNING: I have never used this except for booting windoze. Infact i have never used grub and lilo together. I am running Debian testing/unstable on a IBM 390X laptop. I have a Tata LG LSP-345 fixed wireless phone. I have procured the (serial port) data cable from Tata Indicom directly because I was having intermittent problems using a cable from lamington road. I googled and found this link: http://btbytes.com/2004/11/tata-indicom-linux-lg-lsp345.html I copied the wvdial.conf to my machine. It worked for some days but then suddenly stopped working. This is what I get: root@bryonia:~# wvdial tata --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0 --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ --> Sending: ATQ0 --> Re-Sending: ATZ --> Modem not responding. root@bryonia:~# Need I add that I can get online frm winduhs pretty effortlessly. Tata ofcourse provides no support for linux. I have this in my wvdial.conf: --------------- [Modem0] Modem = /dev/ttyS0 Baud = 115200 SetVolume = 0 Dial Command = ATDT init1 = ATZ init2 = AT+CRM=1 FlowControl = Hardware (CRTSCTS) [Dialer tata] Username = internet Password = internet Phone = #777 Stupid Mode = 1 Inherits = Modem0 --------------- I have tried removnig the spaces before and after the = signs with no effect. Has anyone ever done a comparison exercise for printer running costs? Some time back I had googled, Dot Matrix Printer: 10 paise per page Laserjet: Rs. 0.5/page Inkjet Printers: Rs. 2/page The cost of the Dot Matrix printing is further reduced because of the low tech and highly reliable reinking costs. Till date i have never been successful in getting a inkjet cartridge re-inked (though only tried the hp deskjet 670C). Does anyone have more reliable estimates on the cost comparisons? Have you been successfully and consistently reinked an inkjet cartridge thus reducing the cost per page? if yes, then which brand/model is the most "re=ink" friendly. (mdk9.2, win XP pro) samba 3 configuration problem

hi-- my samba server runs on the machine that has mandrake 9.2 on it. i have an account on my windows XP machine whose username is tom and password is jerry. i create an account in linux using the same username and password above. i then add the password to the password database using smbpasswd. when i log into windows using the same login info, i can see the machine in Network Neighborhood.however i cannot see the list of shares because when i double click on the machine it brings up this login screen.and even though i enter the correct login name and password the process doesnt go beyond the login screen.i dont even see a message saying that the login information is incorrect. all ports that are of interest to samba are open. when i run smbclient with a particular username i get NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE any ideas on how to deal with the problem? rgds -NDK --- http://engr.smu.edu/~nikhil _________________________________________________________________ Top-of-the-line jobs!. http://creative.mediaturf.net/creatives/timesjobs/hotmail_TOL.htm Log on to timesjobs.com and apply TODAY!

USB (or PCI) Linux WiFi NIC with Monitor mode

Hi All, I am looking for a USB Wi-Fi NIC interface, so that I can connect to a wireless network, on a PC running Linux. (Suse 9.2, Kernal 2.6 i believe ) I have found the URL below, http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Linux.Wireless.drivers… which lists a lot of options, but I was wondering if anyone on this list can suggest from their experience, a good USB piece of hardware, that is relatively easy to install. My most important requirment, is to be able to use ethareal, to sniff packets on the WLAN, so I am looking for a driver that supports monitor or promouscious mode. Ethreal seems to have problems with this on WinXP, with most common wifi nic drivers, and so recommends using Linux, therefore my quest to find a device. I dont have any PCI slots free, but if anyone has had good experience with a PCI card, then I may even free up a slot, instead of going the USB way. Thanks Shahed.

Xandros 3.0 and Toshiba Tecra 8100: does not read bootable CD #1

I consider this a strange issue. Trying to install Xandros 3.0 OCE on a Toshiba Tecra 8100 (P3 600, 256 MB, DVD Rom). Does not Boot from the CD. or a DVD. The CD Works fine on other systens, Other OS CDs work fine on this system (Tecra 8100). Existing system was Rh9.0. Also note that there are multiple list admins, and as far as possible they try to react in the same way to a particular action. Building RPMs

Hello All, Can anyone post a note on building rpms from source rpms? I have looked on the net, even the rpm website but I goes a little bouncer. I have even created an rpm folder with some subfolders called BUILD RPMS SOURCE ... as per a site's instructions but I am not able to get any rpm --rebuild command to work. It gives an error of command not found. I use Mandrake 10.1 and its package manager shows no such package 'rpm-build' or 'rpm*' even in the full list. What is this part about setting environment variables for the rpm building? One site say that the source rpm has to be installed first and then it is rebuilt. Its all confusing. This release includes a number of up-to-date large software packages, such as the K Desktop Environment 3.3 (KDE), the GNOME desktop environment 2.8...." The government has started distributing CDs containing Tamil-language versions of various open-source applications, including the Firefox browser, the OpenOffice.org productivity suite and the Columba e-mail client. It plans to freely distribute 3.5 million copies of the CD to Tamil speakers worldwide, according to R.K.V.S. Raman, a researcher at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, a Bangalore-based organization involved in the production of the CD. Open Source Software In India, seeking avenues for growth There's no standing still in a competitive global market--just check out the tech action in Bangalore. Raman told ZDNet UK on Wednesday that the CDs have been in considerable demand following a newspaper-and-television advertising campaign last month. "We have had a tremendous response to this (initiative)," he said. "In the first two weeks of the campaign we got about 100,000 hits daily on the Web site offering CDs, and about 2,000 to 3,000 downloads (of Tamil-language applications). We have already sent out around 50,000 CDs and have a backlog of 35,000." Once the requested CDs have been sent out, more copies will be distributed with computer magazines and newspapers, according to Raman. Even the president of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has taken an interest in the project and earlier this month met the team involved in the production of the CD. The next stage of the project is to distribute CDs containing applications in Hindi, the national language of India. This stage will be launched on June 21 and likely will involve more than the 3.5 million CDs earmarked for the current phase, said Raman. Eventually, the government plans to release CDs in all of the 22 official languages of India. Raman believes open-source software has two main advantages for the Indian population--it is relatively inexpensive and it can be modified fairly easily. "We are sometimes not comfortable with Western user interfaces--they don't make sense in our culture, particularly for rural people who haven't had much access to technology. If we want to modify the software we have to have access to the code," he said. The Indian government's decision to ship free software in this way likely will be a blow to Microsoft, which plans to release a low-cost version of Windows in India soon. Microsoft originally hoped to release its Windows XP Starter Edition--a low-cost, feature-restricted version of Windows XP--by the end of March, but it's now aiming for a June release. Govt. not promoting linux

Hello All, I came across this article in the Asian Age about microsoft teaming up with the Uttaranchal Govt. to provide PCs with starter XP packs for all the Govt. employees on easy loans. Microsoft is also talking to other states to push its product. It is even trying to tie up with HCL and BSNL to introduce a joint offering for boradband users. Does this mean killing linux support??? The www.asianage.com site says that it will not open without IE. So this is a link from times of india's site. http://infotech.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1131085.cms I don't understand why the Govt. is not promoting open source software when their own prestigious organisation CDAC has been doing good work in this field to develop software in Indian languages. They have used the ease opensource to provide new custom software for the rural areas. Then why is the Govt. not promoting the same among its employees. This will also bring down costs of the pcs and reduce dependence on software monopolisers. When we have talent in India, why scout for foreigners? The information and technology ministry should follow some policy on promoting opensopurce software and also make it mandatory for every IT based service provider to provide support for linux platforms. I am a student, studying BSc (Information Technology, Final year , in a college in Mumbai. My other three friends and I are now in Semester V and are thinking of doing a Live Project (Industry Based) for our Semester VI. Please guide me how to go about this. Also, what kind of skill set does the industry expect from a student? Which are the companies that offer Live projects for students and what is the procedure for applying for obtaining a Live Project? my pc.conf : AMD64 2800+,Asus K8S-MX the motherboard has an onboard ethernet controller: SiS 190 / 191 anybody with this m/b and managed to get ethernet working??? I tried gentoo-64-(univ.cd),Ubunto-64 but couldnt find aprop. drivers.. SiS190.c is there in kernel sourcetree.. upto 2.6.5 but i couldnt see it after that.. I installed gentoo anyway.. and also FC3 (recompiled kernel 2.6.11.11) .. but some how I feel its not as fast as it shud be.. sadly though, winXP runs decently fast.. Many other device manufacturers are using embedded Linux (DLink, Linksys, Maxtor NAS devices come to mind) and they don't mention Linux either. HP uses embedded *BSD in some of their storage devices and they don't mention it either. rgds, akk

Xandros 3 Stinks :(

Dear Friends, I wasted 2 evenings trying to setup and use this linux joke called Xandros 3 that came free with this month's chip cd. Are they trying to promote linux or get people pissed off and avoid linux? Its lilo does not integrate with the existing grub. Tried out all combinations of grub script but it would always give kernel panic. Finally after reloading it and creating a bootable floppy, it finally booted from the floppy only to show what a disgrace it is to linux and its earlier version 1. Its dialup does not work even on an external modem. (Version 1 worked even on an internal modem). The xine player hanged and got stuck on my screen.
