At this site: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Networking-Overview-HOWTO-2.html I came across this. Linux has been copyrighted under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL). This is a license written by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) that is designed to prevent people from restricting the distribution of software. In brief, it says that although money can be charged for a copy, the person who received the copy can not be prevented from giving it away for free. It also means that the source code must be available. This is useful for programmers. Anybody can modify Linux and even distribute his/her modifications, provided that they keep the code under the same copyright. Questions a) Does that mean I can buy 1 copy of SuSe/Xandros/RHES/ and distribute it as many times as I want? b) Some Linux distros have the system of activation keys. Is that in violation of GPL terms? For Instance, if I am required to activate my Distro online then logically the same activation key will NOT work for the copies of the distro? MTNL TriBand - unable to browse under Linux

I have a multi boot system with Win XP, SuSE 9.2, Ubuntu 4.10, which is hooked up to the DLink 502T ADSL modem/router provided by MTNL (no wiring issues). WAN IP is dynamic, LAN IP is 192.168.1.1. DHCP server is enabled on the router to dish out IP numbers. When I boot to SuSE or Ubuntu, or Knoppix 3.6, I am unable to connect to sites on the Internet (POP3, SMTP, HTTP etc.) using Konqueror or Firefox. When I point my browser to mumbai.mtnl.net.in or mail.yahoo.com, the status bar says "Connecting to ...." and eventually times out. I am able to resolve DNS names (using MTNL's DNS servers). I am able to ping certain hosts in the MTNL network such as mumbai.mtnl.net.in, their gateway, etc. Firewall is disabled (iptables rules allow everything). The routing table also seems to be OK (see output below). However, when I boot the same system to Win XP. I am able to connect and browse sites on the 'Net. Another interesting point, when I connect the system to another ISP Iqara (similar setup as MTNL i.e. a cable modem/router with DHCP) I am able to browse sites under Linux as well as Win XP. I am not an actual newbie to GNU/linux, but definitely to this group. Whenever, I read the messages that I receive through the mailing list, I am shocked and cannot speak at all. What I find is mostly issues that are based and faced in larger companies with huge amount of network complexity and databases. I have not been posting regularly to this mailing list and I hope I will start posting messages or attempt replies to wherever I can ... Please suggest what else can I do the help people using GNU/Linux. Secondly, being a student, can I attend the meetings conducted in the group. SAMBA config

Hi All, I am using Samba to let my LINUX server to be accessed by my WINDOZE PC's. I have it configured to use share level config and use it as a Domain Controller. It works fine, but I would like it to automount the shares whenever a user logs in to the network. It is possible in a WINDOZE NT or 2000 setup by using login scripts. But is it possible to use it in LINUX environment i.e. by using SAMBA. Everytime I have to manually map it thru Net Neighbourhood or check the option of Auto Mapping so that it is available in the next login. It helps, but I want to control which user can access which share. The share available to the user shall appear mapped whenever he/she logs in. I think you all understand my point. If not, let me know. Any help is highly appreciated. regards, rc

Hi ya all, We are using postfix as our smtp server. The mails are relayed across 12 different server using maps integrated to openldap. I have this requirement where in we need certain users to receive and send mails attachments more than the default as set by message_size_limit parameter. SSH hacking attempts

Hi All, Since past 2 days I am getting SSH login attempts at a rate of 1 attempt per second from different IPs. I believe its a script based attack to beark-in. How can I setup a security where-in I restrict max SSH login attempts from any IP to just 2 per minute. If this limit is breached, start to drop packets from the source_ip for 10 minutes... Cannot access internet through Win 2k proxy

Hi !!! At my company we have Windows ISA server to access net in local network and access to net is given on the basis of domain user ID and password which is asked as a pop up window in IE. I have install Linux 9 on my system and given the proxy settings in mozilla. I m able to access intranet sites in mozilla but when I try to access internet sites mozilla doesn't given any pop for entering user ID and password. what more settings is required. pls help. It would be good to learn from somebody experienced with any compatibility issues that may arise with proprietary hardware. So far the OS has installed fine. It has however not detected the onboard Gigabit Lan. The server has an Intel E7221 chipset (based on 915G) with an onboard Gigabit NIC Broadcom BCM5751. Problems encountered in installing the driver (Broadcom website): - Compiled the src rpms - ok - Installed rpm - ok - Modprobe - Failed ERR-> ('no such command') For the record we choose Fedora over Redhat EIS for which Dell charges 22K to be factory installed/supported! Got this switch Dlink DSS 5+, that barfed one fine day and is not working since then. tried whatever i could to get it working, but seems like a no-go. So any freak out there interested in playing with it and getting it to work or using it as a fashion statement, feel free to ping me offlist and pick it up. better it goes to a geek than to the raddiwala. if you can get it working, 2 brownie points for you for saving the world from a non biodegradable component. Hi Linuxers I'm trying to install wine on SuSe Linux 9 & getting following error. Unresolved dependencies: Installing wine-20050419-0.1[Local Packages] There are no installable providers of (any)libXxf86dga.so.1[[Any]] for wine-20050419-0.1[Local Packages] wine-20050419-0.1 is scheduled to be installed, but this is not possible because of dependency problems. Well yes using VNC or XClient is possible...! But the reason why i always used to do it via a physical console was coz anyways i had to go into the DC for putting the CD's in. But ur idea of loopback mounting the ISO is something i will definitely try out..! What if i have a the files and directories on the CD have been dumped and not the ISO...! Accessing home PC from office (behind firewall)

Hi list, I've been looking for a way to access my home machine from my office but to no avail. ssh/sshd remote login query

hi all, i was trying to implement vnc on a remote server via ssh. suppose a normal non-root account is called "user1" and assume that via sudo, i want to allow that user to run any command as user root without specifying a password each time he logs in for running selected programs. So, in that file, i added added: user1 ALL = NOPASSWD: ALL I know this does not sound good for security , so hence my post to you all .... what are the security risks and what are the precautions to be taken ? I want to restrict a user (or any number of users) to only run certain applications: Any idea/input is welcome thanks for reading-- _svaksh_

I am having some space constraints so hows this for a solution. On an existing desktop (AMD athlon XP, 256 MB) running FC3, can I also install FreeBSD using VMWare and run both simultaneously? FC3 is needed as the routine desktop and FreeBSD for testing. The usage of freeBSD OS will be via ssh so dont care about the gui. Has this worked for anyone? Dear Amit, The Oracle 9i installation program is a Java based program and does not have a TUI or a CLI as an alternative. You need have X installed and running while installing either Client or server. Atleast from my knowledge u cant install Oracle 9i Enterprise without X....on the linux box..! I even failed installing Oracle Client on RedHat Linux with a dump on the HDD...! Installing GUI Desktops from a minimal Debian install

Hi, I installed Debian Sarge .. however it was a minimal install. So I don't think the desktop managers are installed. How do I install them now? RedHat had rpms.. I think the alternate here is apt install. What would be the fastest and simplest way to install Gnome for instance ? Thanks, Gishu Pillai

I restarted all the services and working properly. But when i use elinks in the same machine where i have configured apache it shows forbidden error. IPSec / SSH question

Hello all, I am in a situation, where I have a network admin, who has setup VPN access to our network, using IPSec. Now, all I want to be able to do, is use simple ssh, and if need be, tunnel a few protocols over it. I have done some reading up on ssh and IPSec, and see no security risk, in using ssh for what I want to do. But the network admin, just does not want to open up the ssh port. I can even try and suggest that he only open the firewall to my fixed IP address, and use keys rather than passwords, for ssh login auth, but other than password cracking, I am sure that simple ssh access, should not be a very serious security risk. Anyway, can someone please comment on this ? I am still trying to find a good article which discusses this issue. Thanks Shahed

Dear Vaibhav, As far I know, For example if U add this in /etc/resolv.conf search redhat.com it would mean that when U want to place a query like ping mail.redhat.com due to the addition of the search keyword in resov.conf U could just type ping mail it would automatically ping mail.redhat.com Due to the ' search ' keyword it appends queried hostname to the domain mentioned next to search to every query U make Correct me If I am wrong ... [OT] MTNL TriBand DSL service

Every now and then the MTNL DSL service goes south - cannot browse the web, DNS look up fails etc. - basically no IP traffic goes out of the DSL router. To recover, I have to power cycle the DLink modem 502T. I understand that some of you with the service, may be experiencing the similar problems. What kind of symptoms do you experience? I recently spoke to a sales rep of a linux based accounting app but saw it too was too binding. Maybe it's not their fault, maybe i never clearly expressed by specs. I am looking for a platform independent accounting application, built around open source components. The linux based accounting App was not only NOT OS but also tied to a particular platform. No can do. theoretically i should be able to run it on Windows, FreeBSD, Xandros, RH9, FC3 (both client and server) So... Maybe a webbased accounting app with a mysql/postgreSQL backend seems to be the only solution for now. and it should be openSource ofcourse. It's a bummer that a web based app would mean doing away with the function keys. (true? false?) a) It seems that K.G. has a comprehensive open source accounting package out there, which could do with some testing, development and other help from the domain experts as well as technical folks. I am sure some of our CA linuxers can join in? as well as some technical folks? If there are others too developing their own open source apps and would like to pool in resources, maybe we should get together and see how history can be made? any takers? Hello All Is there any way to retrieve the creation date of a file? The "ls -l" command shows date, but once the file is modified, the date shown is the modification date. Hi I am going to retain the old pc (IBM branded PC celeron 500 64mb RAM) The new non intel PC will be used as a desktop PC and will be networked to the old pc through a crossover cable. You need to add Bluetooth or WiFi cards, which are extra. But then would be overkill sitting on a desk. I am planing on buying an Optetron single processor mobo- Tyan has some models which are highly recommended. The problem is 64bit pci cards at 133mhz. Cant find any here. Using regular pci cards will simply bring everthing to square one. rgds jtd

Hi I have 2 pcs.I will call them as follows New PC(N) and old PC (O) N is a brand new pc with P4.2.4ghz,256mbRAM,40G HDD,D845GVSR mother board etc. It is triple booting with XP and FC3 and Ubuntu warty O is a old IBM pc PII 500mhz,64mb ram and CD rom drive. Help !!! Its Debian

Dear Friends, I have been trying to figure my way around in debian since last few days and have hit some trouble spots. The modem dials and tries to establish connection in wvdial but the last ok does not come and it disconnects. Kppp would not start in gui as it did not allow user access. Om going through the doc pages I found that it allows only those users who are in the 'dip' group. So I did the usermod -G dip user_name and got kppp running in user gui, but it does not detect my ext. modem on ttys0. The modem query fails. There is no ifcfg* file in debian. How does one setup the eth0? The sound system was not detected but the first time I played a vcd in totem media player, it gave picture and lower volume sound. but next day even that did not happen and I got the message 'cannot play cd even though pluggin is loaded'. During my modem setup I had messed with some files so I formatted and reloaded debian again but now totem has the same error right from start. No net, no movie, back to redhat. Any help apreciated. Debian's web archives have dates not subjects so I can't find my relavent topic unless I open all dates one by one. My first priority is getting the net up. Regards, Rony.

Guys :-- something strange tht i noticed, when i put only one RAM modules, then it would take the NIC, sata and everything. But when i put in 4 modules, the same thing again, it wont take the tg3.o module, in dmesg i saw tht it gave an error sayin something like unable to find pci resources. Is it linked with the RAM modules and memory allocation or something.. I asked 10 times categorically, Does it have any other limits of any kind? time restrictions, data transfer restrictions, in 2 languages that i happen to know. He replied NO, no restrictions. which was good since i want something without restrictions. Is it a shared lines or a dedicated one? Dedicated he said. Will I have to provide modem? No, they will provide. So how much was the damage I ask. Rs. 800/month and 1300 for installation. I have written menu.1st to /grub and ^^^^^^^^^^^ that should be menu. l as in list not 1 as in one. u can also use ubuntu as a rescue disc. when you get the boot screen type /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8.1-3-386 intitrd=/initrd/initrd.img root=/dev/hda6 that should take you to the rh root partition. Hi Everyone, In our endeavour to implement a Windoze less office, I would like to add something. I am planning to implement FLOSS in my office network of 7 computers. No accounting packages, no frills network. Just Peer-to-Peer and connected to the Net thru one of the PCs' using the ICS in Win XP. Predominantly use Word, Excel and Mailing. I just want to shift to FLOSS and know that all the above are possible using LINUX. I want to, in addition to the above, implement a messaging server thru which we can chat within our office. Is there any such application thru which we can chat, using "gaim" or something. Provided we are not connected to the Net always. I want to be able to chat with one-other. I know it is possible in M$ world using I believe Exchange Server or something like that and Netmeeting on the client side. Is this possible in our TUX world and if yes are there any free software available. rgds, rc

64 bit kernel

hi all. we compiled kernel 2.6.9 with arch x86-64, the kernel compiled fine, but the bloddy kernel wont take the "NIC" , i have a asus k8n dl motherboard. when i compile 2.6.11 the kernel wont get the sata_nv controller which it does in the 2.6.9 kern.. Both havin the same .config file. i have a feelin tht thr is come irq sharing issue... during the fly i can c the it says irq sharing disabled. Can anybody assist in any way we have recompiled glibc , gcc , binutils with 64 bit arch. -- Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take; out by the moments that take our breath away. As I mentioned before, I had an issue with the install CD of Ubuntu, which failed to install correctly (in fact, not at all), the Live CD works fine. Around 5 yrs ago, AT&T broadband tried the same stunt on me when I told them that I wanted to share the connection via a router. Note please, the Input remains the same whether it's 1 or 100 PCs. So, they said, if you want extra PCs you will have to pay $4.5 per machine more.. I said why? they said, Because only then we would "support it". I said, but I dont need your support and if you do come by, I Will show u that it's working on 1 PC only. How difficult would that be to remove a ethernet cable from the router to the PC? I dont think they had a prepared response for it. I asked him/her categorically. "Is it Illegal to use it"??? I never got a straight response. It was DSLreports that cleared everything for me. That basically a NIC is a NIC, whether it comes into your computer or a router. Then what u do with it is your problem, yes they can say they will not support it, but I dont think they ever found enough number of bakras to fall for the $4.5/machine/month extra crap. In the end I believe they just gave up. If this matter were to be challenged legally, i dont think the cable companies stand a chance. But then again, they are not exactly your poster boys for law abiders (sic) so they'll just cut your line anyways. I am waiting for Reliance broadband to come out with their works. My neighbor, being a fortunate reliance employee up in the pyramid somewhere, has had an amazing broadband connection for free for a year, 512 Kbps minimum, Video on demand, Phone etc etc. I attempted sharing that connection via wireless 802.11b, but the signal did not travel the distance we wanted, but it worked!. Running FoxPRo app on FC3 via DosEMU

At the risk of stating the obvious, I'd like to add my 2 dinars. A major roadblock to adoption of linux in small offices is that accounting applications currently dependent on DOS (yes still people use them, and they work great) and Win platforms need to be run. No way those people are going to adopt to any experimental software. So, the mission began. Taking 1 office at a time: (In my verbose narration I will mark the "points to ponder" within %% and %%) ================================ Office 1: Small office using FoxPro based accounting package with upto 5/6 users at a time. Simple people need simple apps and it's a mystery why FoxPro is not the sher khan in this app world. Simplicity also calls for leaving Wine aside for a while and going one level "below" to DosEMU which as the name suggests is a DOS Emulator. (yes, figured it all by myself!) Platform: FC3 Default install DOSEMU: 1.2.2.1 (www.dosemu.org) latest stable version. RPM had dependencies. So installed pretty much all the developer tools. Got it working. %% It asked me for CD 2/3/1/2/3/1/2/3 %% Got dosEMU running by typing xdosemu which starts DOS in its own window. (I daresay the Good Ol RHL FC Bible was far more useful than the ubiquitous google) The c: which you will see is actually existing in /$HOME/dosemu/freedos Now you know your mapping point. Fire the program and it comes up. Yeah.. just like that. DosBOX also works fine, However, The Screen cannot be Maximised. With DosEMU the screen can be maximized. Remaining Steps: **Making it run from multiple Linux Clients accessing this package on a Linux Server. ** Making sure that the printing works! Else the whole exercise would be a no go. So, Once this happens, the people to benefit? a) The company and employees. Currently atleast 1 person a day suffers for 3 hours of downtime due to viruses. b) The Tech Support engineer. Who comes does reinstall or reformat or Re-whatever each time things go wrong, thus spending X hours. It's like mopping the floor without shutting the tap. c)Anyone still running FoxPro apps pointlessly on Win Machines seeking redemption, here's your ray of light. c) Myself: I'll get my mug on the cover of Time Magazine or Jane's Defence Weekly. ============================================================ The following Case is really boring and without even a successful or potentially successful outcome. You might as well press your "NEXT" button. OK... If still interested, here goes. Office 2: Another small office running Tata EX Next Gen. Crossover office and wine failed to get my RH/FC boxes to talk to Tata EX Next Gen running on Win XP Pro (requiring SQL Server). The thick client installed fine. However on running, the symptoms it displayed were typical when it is unable to connect to the DB. The only thing different I had done while installing TataEX was to install MS SQL Server outside the EX directory. As thr EX directory was required to be shared, i thought keeping the DB unshared (Well in some way anyways) is a little more secure. So the Thick client talks to the Server which talks to the DB and accounting happens. %%I am not sure if variation in the installation of EX has caused my EX client to not find the DB.%% Since it is hardware lock based, and Installing EX on WinXP PRo is a pain, will be a while before I do a resintall with default settings and try running it. Trying to install SQL Server on RH9 using Wine failed. There is a thin line between ambition and foolhardiness they almighty Lord of Free Things wants to tell you through me. %%% Can anyone throw light on whether hardware locks are in any way OS dependent? Because I am gonna try installing EX Next Gen Single USer Version (which uses the MS Access Engine) on a FC3 Machine using Wine.
