We have encountered this problem during the installation of Subversion 1.0.1 (CVS) on RH 9. The server also hosts and runs the following :- - Oracle 9.2 - Samba/Apache/FTP/Webmin. Upgrade Novell 4.11 to Samba 3.0.7 wisdom needed

Has anybody done such a thing as this? I'm looking to make this transition as smooth as possible. I have the new fileserver up and running, and I'm using rsync to keep the Novell data current on the Samba server. Any words of advice on transferring the users and groups and permissions over to the new server in the least painful way possible? I have some idea that Novell uses LDAP so that I should be able do it somehow. I don't want to screw this upgrade up, and any help would be appreciated. I am hoping someone has already done it before and has written a Howto or something about it. Thanks, Komal PS My version of Novell is 3.11 and 4.11

Query about openvpn

Hello ppl, I have downloaded the latest openvpn2.= 0 beta release and I have already started configuring it on FC2. But there = are a few hiccups. My FC2 machine is on the internal network. I have = a iptables firewall enabled on another machine which is natting internal ip= s to the external network using a single public address. I have check= ed out the openvpn sites. I have installed a W2k client for openvpn. While = connecting from the client, it gives me the IP of the internal network, but= I'm not able to ping the network or any machine on it. I got it wor= king on openvpn 1.60, but it was on "tun" device and that support= s only point-to-point connection i.e. single server- single client. I tried= to configure "tap" device, but I'm confronted with the above pro= blem. If any1 has already setup openvpn server on linux with multi-cl ients on windows and it is working successively, I would gr8ly appreciate h= elp in this regard. Hey Rony, We'd love to conduct our experiments on something like 6600 or P900 but as we dont have any sponserer and we also lack experience so I suppose 3310 is ideal to start with. As for downloading ringtones and games through IRDA you can visit many free sites providing images, games and tones etc and upload to your cell via IRDA or bluetooth. For application that shrinks video to fit mobile resolution you can use Nokia PC Suite -> Multi Media Player. Open video file in that software and click on File->Save as and select your preferences rest the software will convert it to 3GP format and your desired resolution. Your suggestion of approaching Chinese or Koreans is considerable but we first need to meet each other (people interested in this project) and discuss the possibilities and we can later move ahead. With the Flasher Cable we uplo= ad two file : the MCU(Master Control Unit) which consists of the actual OS = and I guess is thus the most important file for us, and the PPM(Post Progra= mmable Memory) which consists of all the time-pass stuff like ringtones, me nus, games, etc.These files will also be have to Linux oriented. = The software like Rollis, EEPROM tools for FAID update , KNOCK for backu= p is all there and free. Hi Sherlock, You seem to be confident that these two cables are same stuff with different names but I still cant believe it untill n unless I see it myself, I still believe that with FBUS / MBUS cable we can jus partially flash the cell not fully! Anyways I do have a FBUS / MBUS cable for 3310 (guess 1 of its spring is damaged and doubt whether it works now and I cant check as I dont own a 3310 anymore) and we really need a BAKRA who'll allow us to carry on with our experiments. Cant poeple interested in this contribute and buy a second hand 3310 for this purpose. Anyway when do we (guys interested in this project) meet. Hi I want to create data CDs of 10GB of data. Under WinZip, there is a span option. Using it one can create zip archive on floppy, which can span multiple cds. Now I want to create data CDs in such a way that KB will ask for next CD once it finish writing on first CD without wasting any space. That is if the next file of 100MB and there is only 95MB space available then the program will automatically call another with that size. Thank you Komal

Currently I'm not aware of any offline Wap emulator for Linux but Openwave provides SDK with Wap emulator for M$ and I guess its free. These are not really necessary at first stage but we cant overlook them. And AKAIK FBUS connection is generally used for transferring Pics, tones and logos n stuff and MBUS connection is used to Unlock the cell. A Flasher cable is used to Flash the software to Cell. Can anyone get ARM disassembler as I've the software for 3310 and other utils which are used to flash the software to 3310 and I guess is the ideal and inexpensive cell to start off. Problem with Reliance ISP in Linux

Hi Whenever I connect to the Internet from my reliance phone in Linux(FC2) and log on to site www.indianrail.gov.in i always get an error - Request Time Out. So I use a public proxy server (currently - 203.199.85.2:3128) and then get access to the site. However when i connect to the Internet from reliance phone in Windows I do not need a proxy server for the same site. What could be the reason? And how can i inform the reliance ISP about this problem? Moreover I ve observed that the site shows time-out for all foreign proxy servers. So I guess they ve blocked foreign servers. But then why such a weird problem with Reliance ISP?? Regards Chirag.

Actually most of the nokias have an arm processor 8MB ram, 2Mb flash rom and peripheral (RF frontend, LCD, keyboard, codec, modem and smartcard) interfaces whose regs and addresses are proprietory. They also have a few pins below the battery that allows an fbus/mbus connection which is used for reflashing. You can read the flash download it into an arm disassmbler and figure out the io addresses of the peripherals and the code used to drive them. The peripherals are actually not very complex (except the modem). Once this is done u can port linux to the phone. Thanks all. Basically the ones feasible for me would be ultramax(dadar) and cms (mazgaon, dadar). Usually the "front office" or counsellers as they are called may not give the accurate picture about the actual faculty. There could be a real good faculty somewhere but the initial sales pitch could be bad or vice versa. Any personal experiences? Any faculty of these classes on this list? hello every1, i have been a newbee in linux & also on this grp, i c lot of events and meetings being organised, but from a newbeis point of view i would like to suggest u ppl to keep an seminar or a small workshop abt GNU/Linux....especially abt switching onto "Debian" from other linux distribution i mean the installation GUI of other distributions like RH & Mandrake r very user friendly, but thats not the case with debian, and especially for a newbee its very difficult. There are lot of guys out there want to learn debian, unfortunately today in all classes they teach RH, its like "Linux = RH", moreover there r very few books or almost 'none' available in book stalls regarding debian, and its not possible for all ppl to just log onto net and read ebooks. So i strongly feel that there shd be some event organised abt starting/learning debian.....and other such isuues which could be difficult for a newbee to configure on debian..I know that "Knoppix" could be a nice solution for this but still lets try to learn the typical debian way.... Hello Linuxers, An internet connection for the common man, that provides a download speed of 1 GBytes per second is still a dream. Although satellite based net connections exist, they have limitted subscribers due to high costs and limitted bandwidth. Nowadays the satellite broadcast frequencies are already in several Ghz, for example the Ku band that transmitts DTH signals. Suppose we have a satellite that transmitts at a frequency of say 10 Ghz. This translates to a digital bit rate of 10 Gbits per second. After a little frequency beating, we get an output signal of 8 Gbits per second or 1 GByte per second. This signal inputs into the computer using a gigabit LAN. The problem with normal internet is that it is an instantaneous system where the data is downloaded as per the user requirement and different users have different data to be simultaneously downloaded, thereby reducing bandwidth per user. Suppose instead of this we have a system where the data is not downloaded on demand but is serially transmitted at a high speed like 1 Gbytes per second. This means that in 24 hours, a channel of 1 Gbytes/sec can transmitt 24 x 3600 Gbytes of data. This corresponds to 86400 Gbytes or 86.4 terabytes of data in 24 Hours. The user has no choice but to wait for 24 hours for the next broadcast in case he/she has just missed it. If the satellite has 24 transponders then this data is split into 24 slots of one hour each. So now the waiting peroid for the next download is only one hour. If the transponders are 48 then this further reduces repeat download time to half an hour only. The final result is that the downloadable files are available to *everyone* within the satellite footprint at a speed of 1 GBytes/second subject to a maximum waiting period of 1 hour or 30 minutes. So everyone benefits equally and parallely. This will bnefit remote schools, villages and anyone in any remote part of the country. All data will be linked to an index file that will be transmitted as a pilot file. This file will be a mini website cum search engine classified into topics and subtopics. These will link to the actual file and its corresponding transponder and its broadcast time. A timer in the receiver will mark this file and download it at its arrival time into a buffer harddisk or directly into the computer depending on the hardware design. This will be very usefull for downloading large files, cds, dvds and other bulky data. Entire newspaper websites can be downloaded for liesure reading. Imagine downloading 4 CDs of Linux within 3 seconds flat. The cost for setting this system up will not be cheap but considering the India-China-Asia-Pacific region alone, the number of subscribers will be in millions or a billion. The receiver should not cost more than a DTH system that is now available for Rs. 3000/-. Lets put it at 5000/- rupees. This is just a one time investment. If every subscriber is charged max. 100 rupees or 2$ per month, then this translates to approx. a billion dollars every month from the entire region. This makes it the system for the common man. There will be additional income from the website owners just as they normally pay for web space and from advertisers. Ads will now be fullfledged video films not dancing gif images. This system will peacefully co-exist with the normal internet which will be still used for general purpose light surfing, email, uploads, chat, online payments and registration. The entire software for this can be developed using Linux which is stable and open-source and the techies are available right here in India so no need to import them. Equipment can be procured from China or elsewhere. Please send your suggestions and criticisms and if you like the idea, you can very well use it and help to provide a real high speed net for everyone. Stallman Software patents are the software project equivalent of land mines: Each design decision carries a risk of stepping on a patent, which can destroy your project. Developing a large and complex program means combining many ideas, often hundreds or thousands of them. In a country that allows software patents, chances are that some substantial fraction of the ideas in your program will be patented already by various companies. Perhaps hundreds of patents will cover parts of your program. A study in 2004 found almost 300 U.S. patents that covered various parts of a single important program. It is so much work to do such a study that only one has been done. Practically speaking, if you are a software developer, you will usually be threatened by one patent at a time. When this happens, you may be able to escape unscathed if you find legal grounds to overturn the patent. You may as well try it; if you succeed, that will mean one less mine in the field. If this patent is particularly threatening to the public, the Public Patent Foundation may take up the case; that is its specialty. If you ask for the computer-using community's help in searching for prior publication of the same idea, to use as evidence to overturn a patent, we should all respond with whatever useful information we might have. However, fighting patents one by one will never eliminate the danger of software patents, any more than swatting mosquitoes will eliminate malaria. You cannot expect to defeat every patent that comes at you, any more than you can expect to kill every monster in a video game: sooner or later, one is going to defeat you and damage your program. The U.S. patent office issues around 100,000 software patents each year; our best efforts could never clear these mines as fast as they plant more. Some of these mines are impossible to clear. Every software patent is harmful, and every software patent unjustly restricts how you use your computer, but not every software patent is legally invalid according to the patent system's criteria. The software patents we can overturn are those that result from "mistakes," where the patent system's rules were not properly carried out. There is nothing we can do when the only relevant mistake was the policy of allowing software patents. To make a part of the castle safe, you've got to do more than kill the monsters as they appear -- you have to wipe out the generator that produces them. Overturning existing patents one by one will not make programming safe. To do that, we have to change the patent system so that patents can no longer threaten software developers and users. There is no conflict between these two campaigns; we can work on the short-term escape and the long-term fix at once. If we take care, we can make our efforts to overturn individual software patents do double duty, building support for efforts to correct the whole problem. The crucial point is not to equate "bad" software patents with mistaken or invalid software patents. Each time we invalidate one software patent, each time we talk about our plans to try, we should say in no uncertain terms, "One less software patent, one less menace to programmers: the target is zero." The battle over software patents in the European Union is reaching a crucial stage. The European Parliament voted a year ago to reject software patents conclusively. In May, the Council of Ministers voted to undo the Parliament's amendments and make the directive even worse than when it started. However, at least one country that supported this has already reversed its vote. We must all do our utmost right now to convince an additional European country to change its vote, and to convince the newly elected members of the European Parliament to stand behind the previous vote. The OS abstracts all the details of the hardware and no hardware info is actually available for any Nokia phone AFAIK. Replacing the OS on such phones is going to be VERY difficult if not impossible. You can find technical info for any Nokia phone in the developer section of the website. If you want to play around with cell phones, the Motorola Linux phone seems to be the best bet since all the info will likely be available. All the best in your venture. Regards, Rajesh

Hello All, There were some queries about the idea which I hope to answer. The system of high speed serial data dumping that I wrote about will not replace the existing internet. It will only provide an extra ultra high speed channel for downloading heavy files for each one and everyone without the bother of bandwidth sharing and at a very affordable price. As a rule or plan, all files above 5 or 10 Mb can be considered eligible for this system. Entire web sites can be downloaded as a single arcihve file. The ones lower than that, can be downloaded using the normal internet. All peer-peer, VPN, chat, email, online registration, payments, shopping etc. will be done using *regular internet only*. This high speed channel will not only be usefull as an infotainment channel for music, news and video but also for normal software and other heavy file downloads. Suppose you need to download 4 CDs of Linux, totalling 4 x 700 Mb = 2800 Mb or 2.8 Gb in your home. Even at a speed of 512 Kbits per second, your speed in bytes will be 512 / 8 = 64 Kbytes per second. So 2800 Mb will take (2,800,000 Kb / 64) seconds = 43750 seconds. This translates to more than 12 Hours. So it takes approx. 3 hours per CD to download even at 512 Kbps which everyone still cannot afford yet or their locality does not have this facility. You also got to treat your cablewala as God. Instead of that, in the system suggested, the waiting time would be max. half an hour or one hour but 4 CDs would be downloaded in less than 3 seconds. Imagine the time saved for people who need to download CDs regularly and in large numbers. A single DVD of 4.3 Gb would be downloaded in 4.3 seconds. On the regular 512 Kbps it would take 18.66 Hours. All you would need to do is mark all the files to be downloaded from a pilot list and within their rotation cycle of half or one hour, they would all be dowloaded one by one and be ready in your hard disk in one cycle itself. The maximum you can download within this rotation cycle will only be limitted to the maximum capacity of your hdd. The same data would take days or weeks to download under normal net circumstances. 120 Gb takes more than 21 full days to download at 512 Kbps. In this case, half or one hour. Take your pick. Frankly I don't know what is latency in a satellite but if Philip could elaborate more and provide points on why it has a problem in sat transmission, it would help a lot in making improvements to this system. Since the repeat cycle of data broadcast is every hour or half, problems due to bad weather or earth's rotation will be temporary. Any modifications and suggestions are welcome too. The example I gave is for a 1 Gbytes per second speed having a capacity of 86.4 Terabytes per rotation cycle of half or one hour. This should suffice for all the heavy files that currently exist everywhere on the internet. If it is technologically possible, we can use much higher speeds like 2 to 5 GBytes per second and that will pack in multiples of 86.4 Terrabytes per cycle or reduce the cycle time for the same amount of data. Hi Guys, I have had really bad experience with Nokia that time I felt cant I jus make my own OS like (Symbian OS used in Series 60 cells) and load it on my cell. Cant few of us gather together and build our own OS for Cell phones, there lot we can do with cell. While on move I surf net via GPRS and when I find something useful I cant save it cause Nokia doesnt want me to save it when its possible. I try to transfer Images through Infra-Red but cant cause Nokia doesnt want me to. I can only transfer Contact which doesnt evn take 15secs if done manually. Hi I need Red-Hat 9 installs. I stay near Thane (Bombay) ... so anyone who can gimme the CDs or get me the CD for me to burn, would be quite welcome.. I don't have the time/bandwidth/money to download 3/4 * 650 MBs over the net. So please help me out here! I have Red-Hat 8 which used to install fine on my older machine. But on my P4..Intel865, the setup doesn't go into Graphical mode. Then even more frustrating is that in the install options, I get NFS HTTP FTP The freaking local CDROM option seems to have gone to take a walk... although the machine boots from the same CD I have myself setup Linux on my P2 n times without getting this issue. On a forum, someone suggested that since it is new hardware, RHL 9 is the best bet.. instead of getting X updates. Don't know how true it is... I'm quite new to Linux.... sometimes when I get tired of Win.. I just go down this lane for a few days. Till linux throws up something like this, making me go back to the solitary option.. Gishu BNI

No man, I searched quite a lot and found that there is no othe= r Linux phone other than A760 available in India. From what I gather= , the A760 is for 15000 upwards. I have the following configuration. Redhat 9 with 2.4 kernel and using the dlink internal modem DFM-560IS+++. This modem drivers are compiled with kernel version 2 so there is a compatibility issue. Got an external modem and it works fine. However the Cost difference is 4x. So would like to know if there is any internal modem known to have worked seamlessly with the above configuration? hello people, i've recently done fresh install of FC2 on my m/c. i've kept the named service running, as i want to use local DNS on my m/c, but when i try to stop/start/restart named, it gives me the following error: ************************************************************* rndc: connection failed ************************************************************* i checked the man page for rndc, and also /etc/rndc.conf and /etc/rndc.key, but that did not help. i tried running "rndc" and "rndc-confgen", but it gave the same error msg as above. i guess i've forgotten to install some package or something, but am not able to pinpoint it down :-( plz help, thanks, Pradnyesh.

But I don't think downloading the content of the 4 cds and then burning them onto CDs (I got a writer, so I don't wanna pay for this.), is VALUE-ADDITION. So when someone (I don't care if it is Stallman) wants me to pay 5 times this, I am surely gonna ask him to take a hike.. If linus had started charging a fee for everything that he wrote, I don't think Linux would be half as popular as it is today. Income Tax Form 16 is prepared using an XFig template. And so on.... The selection process will involve a C programming test followed by a personal interview. We will prefer 3+ years of experience but will also look at less experience for exceptional professionals. And please understand that this is not a pure "software job", because we don't feel that people who only want to code can be of much use in our product team. We need someone who will occasionally debug problems on running systems at client sites, so that this insight is incorporated into our product offerings later. And sysadm experience of heavily loaded servers is a big advantage for a role in our product team. I am using Red Hat Linux 9. I want to connect to internet using my re= liance phone (LG LST -340E). I used the rconnect-cmdline-1.0, a tar file fr= om reliance website. I even tried using KPPP. I tried using many possibilit= ies, but get the message NO MODEM DETECTED. When I use wvdial, I get the me= ssage NO CARRIER FOUND. Hello Linuxers, Please bear with the long mail. I am a new member here and my reason for joining is to get an idea of whats happenning in the Linux community especially in Mumbai. I am a hardware engineer by profession and I undertake maintainence for the SOHO segment. I learnt windows on my own since last 5 years by burning the midnight oil, but my networking knowledge is limitted to connecting machines peer to peer in windows. My first encounter with Linux was when Red Hat 8 was the current one. It loaded well on my Celeron 400 and I could configure the internet accounts and surf online using an external modem. However, the printouts in my LX 300 were never upto the same quality as in my Windows Me. The OpenOffice suite took longer to open in Linux than in Win. But the major problem was that printer could not get setup in OO so I would create docs in OO and open them in some other utility and print them. Ultimately that OS became a learning experiment than a proper day to day usable system. Now I am currently learning the RHCE 033 module and was provided a set of CDs for Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS and they loaded well on my other P4 running existing XP. But it refused to detect my internal connexant modem though it exists in the kudzu listing as a pci device even with its proper name. The modem CD has linux drivers but even after loading all of them one by one, the modem would just not respond. The driverguide site gave a driver but the 180Kb something tar.gz file finally opened a 8Kb object file which I did not know what to do. Even in this OS, the print quality in my LX 300 is very poor compared to my XP. Again, Open Office simply vomits my paper out whenever print command is given. I am not telling all this to look for solutions, but to highlight the problems that are making Big Billy have the last laugh. I use legal Windows OS in both comps. and the rest is freeware office, firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware etc. I want to promote Linux to home and small office users but with this situation, I am in a fix how this dream can materialise. Many of you here have gone through these hurdles and are now master programmers too but what about dealers and sub dealers who want to promote Linux with their normal computer experience and knowledge? They are not programmers. Take any windows OS like 98 or Me or XP, it loads like butter and even when advanced drivers are not available, it performs general functions using its own drivers. A simple task like printing a word file in Linux is a problem when the Enterprise Edition in theory is supposed to be superior and office centric. Without modems, net and email which is a basic office function is impossible. The hardware I am talking about is no unknown one but a basic Intel based PC with a normal popular internal modem of a reputed company like D Link. I must add that the Xandros Linux installed beautifully before the RHEL was loaded and Xandros detected my modem and I surfed the net but again, print quality was lacking as in all other Linux I tried. An engineer cannot be expected to spend too much time on one system, that too for simple tasks of getting a PC up and running smoothly. He has to attend atlest 4 to 5 breakdown calls daily. Through the GUI, I fiddled with a lot of settings but got no result. As a result, Linux has still to reach the SOHO user as a fullfledged alternative to Windows. They are still on Windows. Unbranded computer assemblers that use and support varying hardware, still keep away from Linux. I have a few suggestions for the developers and OS makers, 1. Have some sort of unity within the Linux community where simple things like driver support is available to everyone across Linux irrespective of freeware or paid versions. A free version that does not function properly makes no sense. The scattering of Linux flavours that have taken place should be re-channelised into one main objective and that is to provide a proper and similar, if not better alternative to Windows. Unity is strength. 2. Is there any development going on in making a Linux utility that converts windows drivers into Linux drivers as per the Linux flavour and kernel? If wine can run fullfledged Windows programs in Linux, this too should be a possibility. 3. Identify commonly used hardware that can be configured to give equaly good results in Linux too especially printers, modems. Scanners is another problem with Linux. None of the flavours I tried could setup my Canon D646u. A driver converter mentioned in point 2 could come in handy. 4. Please have some kernel intercompatibility in relation to device drivers so that drivers written for older kernels work on new ones too. I read in the recent LFY mag that internal modem drivers written for older kernels cannot work on newer ones. Linus Tarvolds could do something about this? 5. Make Linux not only developer friendly but normal hardware engineer friendly too. Those who found my mail long and boring can send in their flames although I am sorry about that. But this was my experience which I wanted to share with you. As I go on in the RHCE course, I will learn more. Best Wishes, Rony.

What is supermount ?

Hi all, With allmost all the distros (except Slackware) which use the new 2.6 kernel, I see a fstab entry for removable medias (Cdrom/Cdwriter, floppy, etc.) like this, /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdwriter supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/scd0,--,ro,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 What is supermount ? When I tried this with Slackware (with kernel 2.6.7 included under "testing"), the kernel says "file system supermount not known". I read the man pages for mount, but does not mention any such thing. Nor does any documentation with the kernel sources. I feel that this is something like autofs, but didn't dvelve much into it. Clues/Hints/Did I miss something ? Regards, Rajen.

hi, there are two types of install in gentoo. One is thru a net connection which is not possible for a dialup connection or a broadband (i mean there are high chances of disconnectin in India lollll). The other is to build it frmo binaries for your appropriate processor.I would recommend the second one. My case study: I had a PIII system. SO i downloaded two iso's: install-x86*.iso this iso is for a basic install of gentoo.It is common to all types of systems. The second one is package-(architecture).iso which is different for every system. Since i had PIII i downloaded the package iso for my system. This is all u need. hi, I definitely agree with Nikhil. There has been tremendous speed improvements with my PIII machine.Till now i have been using Redhat and Fedora. BUt gentoo has impressed me a lot as it allows me to upgrade and resolves dependencies while getting the flab out of the packages.I took approx 3-days of R&D to get it working (compiling and installing and doing r&d). That was becoz of my ignorance of config files. BUt finally it worked and I am impressed with the responsive ness of applications.and i am having 3.2.2KDe and 2.6 Gnome. Cheers to GENTOO... Well I use Gentoo and frankly I am not a Guru. Gentoo is IMHO the "best" source-based Linux distribution. It gives you the power of installing either binary packages or source based "portages". The major advantage is that you can install portages so that you have applications that are tailor-made for your CPU: Why install i386/i586/i686 rpm's when you have Pentium 4 or Athlon XP ? Needless to say if you have a P4 or XP processor you get a speed/performance advantage. Gentoo is closest that Linux gets to the supposedly venerable FreeBSD. hi, I had installed yoper when it's first version had come out. Well it did not work out of the box for my hardware.Maybe i didn't have any knowledge about the Xconfig files. But one thing which delighted me about it at that time was it booted very fast and could shutdown as fast as win98(incase u don't have problem of windows hanging while shutting down).Now I am trying gentoo linux. It 's a superb distro.I liked the Package Management System of gentoo i.e,Portage... here is a question, thanks for answering in advance. i need a linux server to be installed. i have 10-12 windows clients. on the server i want file sharing print server backup (automatic) firewall proxy server. i have fedora core1 and samba. i will get webmin also. can u tell me wht else would i need. and what type of configuration would the machine need. one more thing, three machines have tally on them. now the solution i have thought about is to have the data of the tally saved on the linux server. the clients will receive it from there and the tally will read the data. tell me if this is possible and sugest how because i have not tried the tally part. thanks again. Dear Linux group, Linux has some inherent advantages as stability, cost less, and has hundreds of free software options. moreover no piracy issues. It is best when it comes to security and more or less immune to virus threats. Following is the list of the Disappointments with linux as of today.. May be in future it (linux) will over come. But it disappoints when it comes to deal with multimedia apps. It plays VCD but cant play DVD. Cant play OGG without using plugin. A/V chats clients are disappointing. Nero allows multi-session CD to burnt in windows which does not work in linux. Also unclosed multisession cd cant be read with out the CD writer in linux. And finally the least does anyone has tested beside knoppix the other live CD of Suse 9.1 pro, MandrakeMove 9.2 Unite to build an OS which handles everthing for everyone. Regards ID

Hardware wise there isn't a problem putting all this on one machine. I have 8 clients running fine off a Celeron 600MHz with 256Mb doing file/print (samba), IM server (jabber) & backup (rsync). However from the security point of view, it may be better to put your firewall & file server on separate machines. Personally I feel an OpenBSD firewall & and a Linux file server give a good blend of security & convenience. It certainly works with Tally 5.4. You just put the tally data directory on the server & modify your tally.ini file on the clients to point to that directory. need to connect my cell (nokia 6610) to a toshiba laptop (satellite 2590cdt) got all the docs... gnokii, gprs scripts.. blah.. blah .. blah... && read thru all the docs... got the driver loaded "donauboe" (toshibsa) irDA.. detected irDA, irattach connect ircomm (as stated in syslog) problem... i get no discover... rootTelnet limit in Fedora 2

Hi I installed FC2 on my PC and added "pts/0, pts/1" into the file /etc/securetty. I also changed disable=Yes option to disable=No in /etc/xinetd.d/telnet. It will let me login as "root" remotely upto 2 sessions. I discovered that the 1st root login as pts/0. After I logout this session, I relogin as root and it is pts/1 session. After the 2nd time login as root remotely, I can't login as root remotely. I also ensured the closed session by typing "last" on command prompt it shows all telnet session are already closed. I can login remotely with other users name. But terminal session keeps on increasing by 1 (i.e pts/3, pts/4, pts/5 etc.) and will not be reset to pts/0 or pts/1 except reboot the system. Debian X woes.

I have installed debian base systemand then installed the x-windows-system and fluxbox packages online. The problem is that startx is not present on the system. After running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, the xserver starts up but crashes almost immediately. There are no obviuos errors in /var/log/Xfree.log. Where should I look for some clues ? Peer-Peer Networking in Linux

Hi! Is there any way to implement peer-peer networking in Linux just like in Windows? e.g. I have 4 PCs at home,one for each family member. Security is not a major concern as we trust each other. I want anyone to share anything on this small network. On Windows 98, I can simply enable file-sharing on each PC and the respective users will share their resources either: Read-only Full Access Password-Protected Read-only or Full Access Being a system admin for few months, I feel this is a simple and very fast way of implementing a small network. I have wondered whether the similar kind of network can be set using Linux Desktops. Any ideas ? ( Should I be using Samba ? ) Thanks, Nikhil Joshi P.S. One may argue that what's the use of a network if it is not secure, vulnerable to worms, viruses, etc.? Hi, But using dlopen, the problem of accessilbiilty still persists. The program using the library, will have access to all functions in the library. I would like to have selective exporting of the library functions to the application. Something that will be the equivalent of dllexport and dllimport in Windows. libtool, from what i read, does not address this issue. thanx for the time. Interisting Problem

I have a off line modem. The idea is that voice mails and faxes go and sit in the modem when the computer is off and modem is on. Modem is a MultiTech modem To see my fax I use windows software called Phone Tools from BVPD software. I do not want to use windows anymore. I tried mounting it through wine to it did not work.... Anyone any idea of what I should use to access faxes when I switch my comp on. How do I access my faxes. HP PSC 1210 not detected on FC2

I have a HP PSC 1210 printer. It used to work perfectly on Fedora Core 1 (kernel 2.4.x). I had to put the default printer and scanner drivers into the /etc/hotplug/blacklist file so that the hpoj driver could handle the same. After upgrading to FC2, the printer is no longer detected. The module names have changed to usblp and usbscanner I think, so I blacklisted those, but it makes no difference. printer doesn't get detected. Any ideas? Philip

Actually Google is very high on humor, which shows to me that they are not just commercial cold-blooded types - you probably know that they have one of the world's highest concentration of PhDs in a commercial organisation. The simple web page, on which they often reflect global events through fun modifications of their logo (right now, every day is a new Olympic event) I think shows a good attitude. Can you imagine a Microsoft or Sun playing with the logo on their main site? There are many other examples of irony (even anti-Bush administration jokes, and anti-MS) they make through Easter eggs planted in the I'm Feeling Lucky option - but I don't think this is the forum for exchanging all of them. In fact, since these jokes are not taken down, it is clear the Google management tacitly approves, so they aren't really classic Easter eggs, though the jokes themselves are classic. Against this, I am afraid I find many commercial Linux distro companies totally short on humor of any kind. If anyone would care to correct me, most welcome. -- Vickram

FC2 booting up w/ a readonly fs

I have an IBM laptop. I have upgraded the hdd to a 20g from a 6g hdd. I have (had ?) FC2 on hda2 w/ home on hda6. hda5 is swap. I then loaded debian testing froma netisntall CD and then I loaded x-windows and some other software online. Partitioning of the disk was done previoulsy using tomsrtbt. Grub of FC2 is on hda2 and grub of debian os on hda3. hda2 is the active partition. After installing debian testing, I am unable to boot into FC2.
