Hi, Try and edit your /etc/inetd.conf file . Search for the imap and pop2 file and insert .120 so the final file looks as follows: pop-3 stream tcp nowait.120 root /usr/sbin/tcpd ipop3d imap stream tcp nowait.120 root /usr/sbin/tcpd imapd Restart inetd with /etc/rc.d/init.d/inet restart. This is to increase the default POP hits to 120 hits per sec for high load email servers. This helped us to resolve the same issue with redhat 6.2 in our office. Let us know if it helped. pppd: not replacing existing default route to eth0 does any know know what this means? i noticed this is the var/log/messages when connecting via dial-up this message comes when my local network is working. however when i disable it ie. my network cards eth0 etc. then my network link works fine. so what could be the problem? Intel motherboard BIOS upgrade causing GRUB failure on RedHat 7.3 Linux boot

I built a desktop using the Intel D850MV motherboard with a Pentium 4/1.60 GHz CPU and 256MB RDRAM (4 x 64MB/PC600 RIMM cards). The desktop board came with BIOS version P05 (MV85010A.86A.0011.P05.0111141737) preinstalled. I installed two Seagate ST340810A 40-GB hard drives. The primary master drive had a Windows 95 (LBA) partition for Windows Me, and the primary slave drive was partitioned into 10GB EXT3 for Linux and 30GB for Windows Me. The bootloader was GRUB 0.91, for switching between a RedHat 7.3 boot and a Windows Me boot. Everything (RedHat 7.3 and Windows Me)worked perfectly.

Hi Guys, Our linux RedHat 6.2 Email Server runs sendmail with qpopper and Drac perfectly. The system also run RAV Antivirus good enough to clean all virus at server level. After setting up DRAC we could minimise the spammers to a larger extend. Now the issue is users do receive lots of junk mails with promotional offers/ads etc which we would like to block at server level itself. Setting filters in procmail has really not Any pointer to commercial softwares or any other method to achieve this would be appreciated. Thanks and Regards jaishankar

How to remove it? [2] Error while transfering install image on HDD- Out of disk space

Hi All, The problem continues here...... On the 2nd day, the system hanged twice ( in 2 tries) I needed to hardboot these times. On the 3rd try I get the message like: "An error occured while transfering the install image to your hard disk. You are probably out of disk space." this sends me back where the installation starts. [ Read the message carefully, as I mention above, I had kept around 3.7 GB for / & the total package size was around 1.5GB ] once again I tried to install, but again I got the same message. so I decided to make a clean installation & moved back by pressing back button. When I reached to partitioning part of the installation, I got the message..... " The partition table on device hda is carrupted. To create new partitions it must be initialized causing the loss of ALL DATA on this drvie" This was along with 2 options [ initialize ] [ skip Drive ] Naturally, I skiped the Drive b'coz I do not wanted to loose all my data which is in windows. This gives me another message, " an error has occured - no valid devices were found on which to create new file system. Plz check your hardware for the cause of this problem. Pressing [OK ] leads me to another message, " An exceptional condition has occured. This is most likely a bug. Plz copy the full txt of this exception & file a bug report at http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzila" [ I have a copy of the bug with me & not attached here, if anybody want it I can send it to them. ] ${ Do I need to remove all the partitions, (including windows partition which I don't want to be,b'coz of my data) to initialize the disk & re-define the partition table

hi folks, We need to deploy a qmail with LDAP for address book and authentication at several of our offices spread over the country. We'll be putting one central server at our data center, with an anti virus gateway for it.So its a hub-n-spoke kinda architecture.All mails to-n-fro the Internet will pass thru this central server. some issues that i'd like help with: 1)i need a single domain ( company.com) to be hosted across these multiple mail servers 2)Intra-office mail, i.e mail from an user to another user in the same office should be delivered locally. 3)Mail for remote user i.e.one situated at another location should be routed to that location's mail server, but through the central anti-virus gateway. 4) All users have a common web interface for changing passwords 5)In case of qmail,how can i have some accounts on the local server and then instruct the server to send mails to some other user but belonging to the same domain to some other smtp sever.. this without LDAP.... i.e user1(a)company.com wants to mail user2(a)company.com but user1 and user2 are on diff machines .. LDAP is not involved in the picture i want mails to go thru a central mail server!!!! PRC - Mentors and Students resposnibilities

We need to define a procedure for signing up for a project and Mentor- Student responsibilities. I have the few suggestions.. The mentor is required to bring in domain knowledge to the project. The mentor will decide the scope of the project. [in consultation with students based on project requirements etc] The mentor is involved in an advisory and guiding position in all phases of the project [planning, design, coding, testing, documentation etc] Mentor may choose to perform part of the coding or he may not. Students will be involved in all phases of the project and should commit in principle to stick to the end of the project. Mentor may choose to request some one for independant quality assessment...[at least for non corporate projects] More questions we need to find answers to: If mentors for a project are decided merely on volunteer basis, then we need functionality to support a wish list. where someone not qualified or not having enough time to be a mentor can put up a project that someone takes up as a mentor. Will the mentor decide how big a team is required...& will we have projects that students cannot sign up for? How will a student sign up? [ i guess we need to create a page for that] - Shankar

A development version of GNOWSYS-0.1-1 is released at http://www.zope.org/Members/nagarjuna/GNOWSYS. GNOWSYS, Gnowledge Networking and Organizing System, is a web application for developing and maintaining semantic web content developed in Python and works as an installed product in ZOPE. The application provides generic classes, viz. object, object type, association, association type, facet, facet type, occurance, occurance type, theme, scope, etc., for developing semantic web content. For those who are aware, the application follows the structure of TopicMaps (http://www.topicmaps.org). It is intended to develop as a powerful prototype application demonstrating the potential of an expert system within the paradigm+of object oriented database technology. Presently it cannot import/export the content in the form of XTM (XML Topic Maps) standard, but this feature is being developed. The application can be used for web based knowledge representation and management projects, for developing structured knowledge bases, as a collaborative authoring tool, suitable for making electronic glossaries, dictionaries and encyclopedias, for managing large web sites or links, developing an online catalogue for a library of any thing including books, to make ontologies, classifying and networking any objects etc. This tool is intended to be used also for an on-line tutoring system with dependency management system between various concepts. It also contains a facility to add rules into its rule base, and execute the rules. Once completely implemented this feature will make the product really powerful, for it can infer and make new relations. Though a prototype of rule base already exists in the developing version, more elegant implementation is being worked out. GNOSYS is a free software, released under GPL. Does not allow login even with Su on Redhat 6.2 box

Hi Guys, I had one of my Redhat linux 6.2 box which was configured with live ip address. For experimental purpose, we did disable all services like ftp/telnet/finger etc with host.allow and host.deny allowing only one machine from our internal network to access this using ssh. The only service which was enabled was http on the external interface.There is no other services like ftp/lpd/nfs/ running on it. All the users/groups like games/shutdown/operator etc have been deleted. We have changed the permission using chattr for inet/ init conf files too. The box did NOT run any firewall etc. The next day what we found was, it would NOT allow us to login at all. At the login prompt , when one tried to login as any user or even "su" it would just jump back to login prompt. We rebooted the machine with single user mode and found that no passwd /shadow files were tampered with. Could i get some hint as to which are the likely files which i could look into which could cause this problem. This would help us further in the penetration test which we are conducting. Okay, I did a make install on glibc-2.2.5, and pine still works. How do I know that the new glibc is being used, or will be used by newly compiled programs, and stuff? [much rebooting and fscking] I spoke too soon. Running ldconfig killed everything. I can't even get into the system in single user mode. And it looks like 2.2.5 isn't even installed. I forked /usr and / before doing all these upgrades. The only difference in /lib/libc* and /usr/lib/libc* between the old and new systems seems to be the timestamps. It was twentish-something Mayuresh Kathe <mayuresh(a)mac.com>, with a small hardware device in hand. That was the best part of a year ago. We were supposed to talk to each other via e-mail. But that never happened; mostly due to this writer's fault. Each time we exchanged mail, one ended up feeling that there were still more inputs needed before the 'story' could get done. Maybe because the story itself was a rather difficult one to comprehend. Putting Kathe in touch with a journo friend in Mumbai didn't quite work out. Fighting the odds in the hardware and software world, Kathe was obviously getting increasingly irritated with having to struggle to get a hearing from the media. Writing on software which is easy to describe or understand despite the distance is one thing. Hardware and operating systems prove to be an uphill task -- specially if you're the kind of a writer who background is journalism, rather than hard-core technology. How much of an innovation is this innovation? Is it an approach that makes sense? We're still not sure... So what better than let Kathe describe his work in his own words... We invite readers' reactions to Kathe's ideas, expressed in the form of a Q&A that he sent in recently: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is Nevy OS? ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nevy OS is a new name of the 'Indy' operating system, the first operating system from Tisya Microsystems Pvt. Alan Kay, though he hasn't supported directly, but has always been the kind of person who would suddenly appear out of nowhere and tell you things which would make certain pieces of the big puzzle fit in. Mr. Jef Raskin again though not a direct supporter has been a constant guide and the force to make me think out of the box. (He also manages to give a kick on the #$%^ to wake you out of the dream world) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- When did it start, where and how? ------------------------------------------------------------------------- It started sometime around the year 1997-98 when I was getting bored of all the routine development work as part of his duties at Larsen & Toubro, Mumbai. I wanted something more challenging, something which would allow me to tap into my latent potential and do something significant. I was doing quite some amount of research on easy to deploy network solutions for data exchange, also some research on handwriting recognition, add to that my inner desire to build systems which would be so easy to use that they were almost intuitive. I was also disgruntled with the fact that Windows was spreading around faster than a virus. It became obvious that the path Windows was taking would demand an upgrade to hardware almost every year. That would mean the prices of hardware almost never going down, only the power offered would be a lot more for that same cost. That was a situation not conducive to bringing computing to the general masses (that idea of bringing computing to the masses arose out of the fact that I couldn't afford a computer till I had started working) I wanted the upcoming generation to grow up with computers, be as at ease with them as my generation was with VCRs. But, I also wanted to them to be technologically sound and work in an environment which would let them focus on their job (invisibility of technology). So one fine morning, during the bus ride to my office I popped up a question to start a brain storming session with my friend Rajeev Warrier (now at PW-C). The idea was to build an information appliance which would be hooked on to vast network of data (based on the Internet, but running parallel to the WWW) allowing the user access to information at the touch of a button. The appliance would have to be small, rugged, affordable and simple to use. (Personally, I wanted to base it on the LCARS system aboard the Star Trek Enterprise in the Next Generation series.) We figured, we would need a minimalistic OS, its sole data would be to start the hardware, get on the Internet and send queries and receive and display data. To avoid problems we wanted to eliminate the concept of a floppy disk drive or a CD drive (for that we thought we would make an OS which would be non-failing). And to keep costs low, we wanted to use the television as output, and provide a keyboard with built-in pointer controller (our terminology for mouse/trackball/ peticular switch) with a long cable (wireless would be too expensive). The biggest impediment would be the network. I envisaged a network based on the standard LAN (the benefit of having worked in a corporate environment) theme, only, we would call it SN (Society Network). This network would have to be the death bell of the irritating cable television network, since I wanted to provide 'Video on Demand'. We (Rajeev and me) would discuss it in detail every morning, sometimes during lunch, in the evening bus ride. We came up with an idea of creating separate smart disks which would be plug and play to the appliance hence providing external storage space (if required). Our biggest impediment was cost, the hardware cost just would go down (especially due to the TV output interface). That problem got solved one morning when I read an article in 'PC Quest' about a new MediaGX-based motherboard, created by a company in Bangalore 'Bharati Electronics'. We were euphoric. It infused a new life to our brain-storming sessions. I went ballistic, somehow, it seemed -- the force was with us -- that things were going our way, I met up with a guy at one of my regular Linux Users meets. He was a hardware assembler. I talked about the motherboard, he said he had heard about it. I talked him into lending me one of those boards. I told him, "If this succeeds, you get a cut and you will be rolling in money. If it fails, what's there to lose? You just assemble a PC with the board and sell it off." He agreed, he contacted the BE (Bharati Electronics) office in Bombay, got hold of a board and put the whole thing in an old casing and gave it to me. I toyed around with it for a couple of weeks, showed him a demo (which was pathetic). He was not happy, and started pushing to give back the system. In the meanwhile, I had been talking with an old colleague of mine -- Deepak Sharma, who had left L&T -- about my ideas. He was working for Fore Systems which got bought out by Marconi Telecom, UK and I figured I would need his help to execute my idea of establishing SNs. He talked to me at length about my concepts, and said it was a workable idea. We had discussed it for long, and I even showed him a demo. When the assembler pressurized me too much, I had to return the machine, but that wasn't before I had taken a trip to Bangalore and shown a demo to a company, via Deepak's contacts. The company offered me a job to bring that concept to reality. I jumped as I had already got frustrated with all the ridicule at L&T. Perhaps people out there just couldn't get it, being too closed minded. I reached Bangalore, and after that things happened in a sort of fast forward. What I had imagined the company to be -- based on Deepak's information -- was not what it really was. The company was dying, and I was supposed to be their saviour. Add to that I had to do it without any support (neither people to work with, nor sufficient equipment). I worked long and hard, worked nights at end, but things were proceeding too slow, with only me working on both, the hardware specification and software development. I fell ill with Typhoid, almost scrapped death, and had to come back to Bombay for treatment. In the meanwhile, I was made into a scapegoat for the failures of that company. The company got shutdown. Luckily I escaped with the bare minimum of injuries. Back in Bombay, broken physically and emotionally, I moved around aimlessly for quite some time, till one fine day I sat and thought things out. I figured, 'I am young, haven't got much to lose and that I giving it one more shot would be the best alternative.' I started afresh, dug up old contacts, built new, spoke with a couple of developers -- Erle was one of them -- and asked around for funds. No one was investing. One of my associates had heard about my plight. He also knew that I toying around with the idea about introducing a StrongARM (processor)-based computing device. One of his business contacts had one StrongARM evaluation board which he could not use. He got us both together. The owner of the board suggested that I collaborate with his company to develop a set-top-box for his markets in the Far East. It was the turning point, though due to my inexperience I faced a lot of hardships. Though after a prolonged skirmish (and a pending case against them) the collaboration fell through, I managed to salvage around Rs 450,000 (under $10,000) from the deal as fees towards consultation and miscellaneous expenses. Using that as capital, I took a trip to Taiwan, got oriented with the workings of the place -- very amusing, those guys work with hardware like we work with software, quick.... Built a dependable base in four working days, and a prototype, came back... That was the period of the 'crash of twin towers', the market had collapsed along with them. This was the time when I figured it would be better to start improving the Operating System and develop a contact base in India. We worked on Nevy OS (then called Indy). I moved all around the place (including Bangalore, where I met a person called Fred) and showed him one of our prototypes. What Scanner to buy?

Hi! The school I work for is planning to buy a scanner that works on Debian (planning to use either potato 2.2r6 or Woody) Can people mail me a list of scanner models they have successfully been able to install on their GNU/Linux machines? We are thinking of buying a canon 640P. Any input on this? BTW, I have been to the SANE website and have the compatibility list. Samsung claims that ML1450 would work on Linux. Has anyone been able to make it work in Debian? BTW, I couldn't see this printer listed in www.linuxprinting.org. Any suggestions as to what Laser Printer would be most ideal to have in the price range of upto Rs. 22,000? Vikas.

IMHO Limiting processor usage (to %x on processor y) doesn't make sense because when there is heavy load on the server, any reasonable value of x will be larger than that the kernel will assign anyway, and during light load you'll be wasting CPU time. If you "nice" the processes enough the scheduler will make sure that higher priority processes (like DNS etc.) will get all the time they need.

After all, your system uses a certain amount of virtual memory that depends on the apps you use. physical ram + swap space used = virtual memory used Thus shouldn't you need *less* swap space if you have more RAM? I have 384MB of RAM and my swap space usage remains stubbornly stuck at 0. Wouldn've been an awful waste of 768 MB or hard disk space if I'd followed that rule-of-the-thumb!! (Instead what I've done is to remove the swap partition and allocate swap files if I ever do anything memory-intensive enough to require more space... and that has never happened)

Linux partitions

Hi All, How many partitions should we have to install Linux on any system? & what should be their size if we have 4GB of disk space & installation packages take around 2.5GB to install. Swap, I know, double the ram.(127MB in most cases) On the RHL 7.1 CD , in the installation strategies how-to, I read that we can install linux with min. 3 partitions. They are, /boot, /swap & /(root). But this way I found the system is slow Don't ask me to read how-tos. I want to discusses this point with you as I found variation in the suggestion in various ppls. Some says your / partition should be the largest on the other hand some says /usr partition should be large, as the installed S/W get installed on this partition One of my friend told me that your /boot partition should be the largest partition. I know he is wrong, as some of our friends told me that around 10 to 20 MB are enough for /boot. During the installation, once linux dispelled a message that, your /(root) partition should not be less than 250MB. But then what about other partitions, like /home, /var, /dev /tmp & other. HDD in LBA? CHS? Huh?

So I went and got a new 40GB hard drive and plugged it in as /dev/hdc. This box only had /dev/hda until now. So what does Linux fdisk (and cfdisk) do? They both think it's a 6GB drive. Fiddling with all settings in CMOS doesn't help. besides, the *kernel* knows it's 40 gigs. Enter DOS fdisk. Which happily recognizes the drive, creates a token 100MB partition (I don't trust LILO, I use loadlin. I should put lilo next.) and happily formats it. (Okay, that was DOS format. Whatever.) Now Linux fdisk sees all the cylinders/sectors/foo. So now I'm embarassed: Why did Linux fdisk not recognize it for what it was, the first time? For that matter, which is better in CMOS: Auto (duh) LBA Large (whatever *that* means) CHS (and lie about the geometry) ? -- Satya. <URL:http://satya.virtualave.net/> I didn't know it was impossible when I did it.

Hi All, Yesterday I read an articall about the Simputers ( SIMple comPUTER ) which are meant for the satisfing the need ofthe peoples from rural area in India. Peoples those are just literate or low qualified but still wants to know & learn about the computer can take the great advantage of the simputer. According to an artical, one software team of IIT is developing these simputers & it will probably be avaliablein the market from November. Mr. Mark Mathayan of IIT encore team said that, simputers are designed & developed by keeping in mind the percentage of literacy in India. He further said that, these simputers will be avaliable with a low prize of approx. Rs. 9,000 /- only. These Simputers will have all the facilities which are avaliable in normal computer. But they will not be working on MS-Windows, rather they will work on LINUX, which is freely avaliable world wide Many foreign companies have shown their interest in this project & asked for the rights for the production of these simputers. But IIT has not given the rights to anybody as it wants the simputer to be purely Indian & wants some Indian company to come up & start the production. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If we forget rest of the part of this artical & concentrate on using LINUX on the simputers, I think this is a golden opportunity for us to wide sprade the Linux in India & making the peoples aware of Linux. } On the 3rd day i.e. today, I deleted all the 3 linux partitions of the disk & accessed the free space from the windows ( fdisk ) & scanned it for any bad sector, which I didn't found on the disk so I again partitioned them for linux ( in linux setup) But still get the same message as before i.e. " An error occurred while transferring......... " $ { WHY IS THIS MESSAGE COMMING UP? WHERE IS THE MISTAKE? } $ { HOW CAN I COME OVER IT ? } Here during the partitioning I got another message that, " Automatic Partitioning Failed There is not sufficient disk space in order to automatically partition your hard disk. You will need to manually partition your disk for RHL to install." Plz choose the tool U would like to use the partitioning your system for RHL - [ Disk Druid & fdisk ] Before this installation, I had deleted the partition which was created for scanning in windows. So I had around 4GB of free disk space, But still I got the above message. Hi All, - - - - - - - - - - - I am providing u this detail story b'coz I want u to understand the problem properly & give me out the correct solution. The mail is divided in the 3 parts b'coz of the restirision on the mail size - - - - - - - - - - - Since last 3 days I am trying to install RHL 7.1 on my pc but, every time my installation fails b'coz of failure of disk partitioning or due to system hanging, yet I'm not able to install RH on my pc & I'm still trying...... I have kept around 4GB of my disk space, to install linux on my m/c the total disk space I assign in the following way. /boot 54 MB hda8 $ { what is the min space we can assign to /boot? } swap 133 MB hda9 / remaining all space hda10 ( around 3.7 GB ) $ { Do I need to create any other partion for the installation & for improving the performance, as I found the system is quite slow in the 1st installation? } [ I read in one of the how-to (on the CD) that we can install linux with these 3 partitions, so I followed it ] [ NOTE: I'm not able to partition the disk with Disk Druid as it is not setting up /boot partition saying that your boot partition is >1024 cylinders & can not be mounted, so I used fdisk instead ( after reading the info & help ) & I found it very easy. ] o.k... On the very 1st day, the installation goes fine ( with little difficulties) but there was still some errors such as after shuting down the system it was giving an error - * general protection fault : fooo cpu : 0 EIP : 0050 [<00008881>] [snip] . . . . . . . . . . [snip] * dos partitions were not able to mount [ I tryed ' mount ' command along with editing /etc/fstab file but it didn't work, leaving the message vfat partitions can not be mounted ] $ { why it was not mounting the partitioning ? } * I was not getting a proper screen resolution. which I wanted to solve. So I finally desided to re-install RHL. Sorry for inconveniance, SAMEER :)

dear all, an acquitance's company in andheri needs an expert in system integration for one day. this company is involved in iso quality certification (like iso 9000, 9002 etc). the date it would need the expert is 23 /24 july. ideally, the person should have B.E. or equivalent deg with some experience..... the money paid for a day's service will be quite ok (as i think it, of course..) pls call Mr. K. Hello, I just installed PCQ Redhat 7.1. on my new P4 1.5 on 10gb hdd with win2000 insstalled on the 40gb. i am able 2 run both win200 and linux with dual booting my prob is that in haste i forgot to configure the vga card, i have asus v3005 32mb, this was not shown in the list. i learnt from a friend that i could've used sis 300 (is it in the list shown by redhat??). now i am not able 2 startx. my question is how do i configure X windows to take the correct drivers for with re-installing linux all over again. my vga card is agp asus v3005 32mb ram monitor is lg studioworks 563N please help! nilesh

problem with internal modem

Hi luggers , I've installed Mandrake 8.2 & I am having Motorola SM56 PCI internal modem on ttys3 or com4 . I am trying to connect to Internet thru Linux. I tried to configure my system using Mandrake Control Center , but when i clicked on "Connect" tab , it shows "connection failed" after sometime. When I list my hardware using HardDrake tool it lists my modem correctly , so I think Linux has recognised my internal modem . But when I click on properties for modem , it shows all details like vendor and all except for 'kernel modeule ' for which it says 'UNKNOWN' . So do i need to install driver ? Please Help . Thanx in advance . Kedar.

Userfriendly

I agree with Mr Pathak. We use Windows as the frame of reference as to userfriendliness. _But_ forcing customers to upgrade to newer versions of office suites by making newer versions incompatible with older ones is not userfriendliness. Setting standards and then exploiting them is not userfriendliness either. Stifling competitors by withholding technologies from the market restricts your choice and is most unfriendly. Mozilla tweaks, anyone?

Hi folks! Could anyone give me some tips on how to tweak mozilla to respond faster? Since I have lots of RAM, I'm ok if some processes stay in the background eating up memory. Galeon has this nice option of starting it in 'server mode' that can be started up at login but it's pretty light-weight so it doesn't make much of a difference. Is there something in mozilla like this? Atleast mozilla --help didn't show it. Samba Printer Setup Problem

I am using Redhat 7.2 and I have configured Samba 2.2.5-1. I my Network Places, I am able to view my Linux Server and access my shared directories, here I get the option of Printers and Faxes, when I try to Add Printer I get the following error message. " You dont have sufficient privileges a add a printer on "\\SambaServer". Do you want to run this command as a different user? " What could be the reason for this error message, though I am able to access the shared directories on SambaServer from my Network Places. TIA. -Rupesh

Some of the ideas that came up while thinking about Marathi Linux There are 3 levels of work in Marathi-isation 1> Applications like office software: Free softwares like a>StarOffice , which are quite a good substitute for MS-Office and available in Linux : b> GIS softwares like GRASS or MYWorld useful for urgent problms like water and environment c> educational softwares Like LOGO, STARLOGO, Model-It, Worldwatcher, DrGenius We need to translate the labels and messages and documentations and tutorials, multi-lingual CDs with multimedia. 2>Creating application in Marathi: Using gtk, glade emacs etc. 3> Working at the OS level : Creating labels/message table in marathi. NCST has already done a large part for Hindi, some in Marathi too. We also need to create mass awereness thru newspaper article in all the press. We should ask our local cybercafe to have marathi software loaded. AKRUTI have agrred to support anyone helping. Similarly other Marathi and Indian language developers can be asked to make offers. Words in spoken languages mean whatever a majority (in fact any sufficiently large group) of ppl say... and like it or not, to a majority of people a hacker is the same as what the purists insist muct be called a "cracker". Haven't Hindi words like jungle, guru, mantra etc. have been accepted as legitimate english words bcos so many english-speaking folks use them? Shouldn't the age-old "adapt or die" maxim apply here too?

TIPS AND TRICKS: LEARN GNU/LINUX THROUGH ONE-STANZA TRAILS By Frederick Noronha YOU NEED not get lost while finding your way through GNU/Linux, the alternative computer operating system that started off with a rather geeky air about it. Because of its rather-techie reputation, some still look at this OS with trepidation. But that not be so, says a network started from India and aptly called LOST. LOST, short for Linux One Stanza Tip, tries to make it easier for newbies and techies alike to find their way more easily through the maze of secrets that this powerful -- but still little difficult-to-get-started-on -- operating system holds out. Explains one founder-member, Suresh Ramasubramanian: "It started when (one of the key persons) U.S.M. Bish had this great idea. FAQs or frequently-asked questions are asked and repeated so many times. Several people anyway don't really bother to google (i.e. simply visit the search-engine www.google.com), or go to a web-page-based FAQs. They expect answers by e-mail." This team of Indian geeks wanting to 'spread the word' and ensure a faster learning-curve for GNU/Linux came up with an idea. Their solution was to start slipping a FAQ into the e-mail signature -- randomized so that a new, short GNU/Linux tip turns up each time. This, in short, resulted in LOST, or Linux One Stanza Tip. Says Bish, with a touch of irony, while explaining the origins: "This herring got caught spontaneously, while we were fishing for trout!" Thing began sometime in July 2001 on the Linux-India-Help mailing list. This list is part of the Linux-India network, that was set up by volunteers within India and abroad, and aims to help promote the 'free software' GNU/Linux operating system within this part of South Asia. There was a long thread (or discussion, going by slang used on electronic mailing-lists) on "finger-holding" for newbies. Egged on, a few LOST promoters decided to put some common queries that crop up "time and time again" into small "HOWTO" documents. (HOWTOs explain just what their name says, how-to do certain technical tasks with GNU/Linux.) They then felt the need to make these available via some Internet server, so that they could be pointed to a common resource. To start, the team consisted of Suresh "SRS" Ramasubramanian <mallet(a)efn.org>, Rajesh Fowkar <rfowkar(a)goatelecom.com>, Sriram Karra <karra(a)cs.utah.edu> and USM Bish <usmbish(a)hclinfinet.com> Initially, they would simply 'copy' their e-mail to each other. But, as the volume increased SRS setup a "howtos" mailing list up in August 2001. "We were first writing documents, which could help newbies with their trials and tribulations with Linux. We still are at the job, and we look at each others contributions for refinements and additions ... more heads the better. Soon other folk joined in. Howtos, though on a low key, is still progressing. It is the trout that we are still fishing for," says Bish. Writing long documents, which were put up on sites, didn't really help much. Bish recalls reading that readership of email 'sigs' (the few lines tucked at the end of every e-mail message) was about 80% whereas all other forms put together inclusive of banner ads, site-info ... and spam accounted for the rest. So he floated this idea of using short info-containing 'sigs' of howtos to disseminate Linux related knowledge. "This in education parlance is called passive dissemination of Info", says Bish. Just for some background: GNU/Linux is a computer operating system that is gaining growing acceptance in a country like India, which has considerable software skills but ironically can't afford the comparatively unreal prices of much of the proprietorial software put out in the global market. After the operating system was put together in the 'early nineties, it first trickled into this country. Then, in 1997, the Internet opened up to the commonman, making it possible for collaboration across the country, and for the speedier dissemination of information. In between, prominent mainstream Indian computer magazines like 'PC-Quest' pushed GNU/Linux forward by circulating tens of thousands of copies of this computer operating system via CDs. They continue putting out tens of thousands of GNU/Linux copies into the hands of eager computer enthusiasts, as do magazines like 'DeveloperIQ' and 'Digit' (formerly 'Chip'). Now, the circle seems to be getting complete: early adopters of GNU/Linux are showing signs of passing on skills to new-users. Bish says he would perhaps be amongst the first users of GNU/Linux (since '95) in India, and had quite a few hints and tips collected over the years. "It was a matter of putting a few samples for perusal, then some brain-storming on the "howtos", and to get the catch-word LOST (Linux-One-Stanza-Tips). It also took a bit more effort to get the format together. Then we were on the road. By the time LOST was put up for the first time in September 2001, we were about a dozen folk (working on the) howtos," he recalls. The first LOST tips were put up on Bish's home page, along with the other documents that he wrote (like the HDI -- How Do I -- series). This is at: http://geocities.com/usmbish/ The first few were posted on LIH (the Linux-India Help mailing list), and it caught the attention of people on the list. Contributions started coming in. "We did not publicize over other lists because there was much more work to be done before we could actually call it a project to be proud of," says Bish. The tips were getting ready -- or would accumulate gradually. But implementation was a different ball game altogether. It was possible to use random signature-generating software like 'fortune' or 'randsig' for LOST sigs. But the team felt the need to develop something so that signature placement would be by choice -- either a LOST tip or some other sig. Bish started writing the script rotator, and then gen-sig. These are bash scripts only, but did the job fine. Its fans say 'rotator' is arguably among the most versatile signature rotation software on the Net. It caters for signatures from multiple sig sets, PGP/gnupg and reserved signature placement. It also allows for sigs from databases like LOST, that could be fixed or random. There were other scripts needed too. This was needed for the manipulation of LOST snippets to other formats. Binand wrote the script "lgrep" to search for LOSTs by keywords, Sriram has been writing an elisp script for interfacing with emacs. Sayamindu wrote a PHP script to place random LOSTs on web pages, which is working on his home page. Once set in motion, things continued. It was at this stage in Oct-Nov 2001 that LOSTs started taking the shape of a project. By December 2001, the project was accepted by Sourceforge. On New Year's Day 2002, Bish put up the first tarball on lost.sourceforge.net, and by January 15, 2002, an announcement was made on Linux-India-Help. Then, the number of snippets had swelled to 250, from the original 50 that was first put up on the home page in September 2001. Currently, the number of LOST tips has crossed 300. There are nine 'scripts' up too. Over time, this number is expected to grow. Help is welcome from everywhere. "It is a good idea, sort of. It can take contributions from almost anybody, can be used by almost anybody. It kind of gives people a short, nice-to-know tip -- like the tips that pop up in KDE or other applications on startup," says Suresh. This comes to you, of course, via email. You end up feeling grateful, say, to Rajesh Fowkar of Goa, when an email sent on some other subject also contains a useful tip sent out from one GNU/Linux enthusiast to another. How do LOSTs look like? By some coincidence, and because it originated there, those pushing the list forward are regulars from Linux India Help. "People like Bish, Rajesh Fowkar, Binand Raj, Dileep Kumar (MDK), etc. I haven't contributed more than two or three LOSTs -- I just host the mailing list for LOST," says Suresh. He gives full credit to "Bish's fertile brain" for originating the idea. Like many other 'free software' GNU/Linux projects, it grew through word-of-mouth. Goa-based Rajesh Fowkar disagrees. Says he: "Suresh's contribution is next best only to Bish's." Like in many volunteer-driven projects evolving in the GNU/Linux spirit, the fight is not so much to gain credit at the individual level, but to spread the benefits around generously and appreciate each other's contribution. Suresh suggests that a project like this has far greater potential than currently met. His strategy: expand it as far as possible, submit it to Freshmeat (the site freshmeat.net that announces new GNU/Linux projects) so that more people get a look at it, and want to participate." Just a few months old, there already are some memorable times of this project which members remember. One moment was when some fine soul found a LOST signature on a mailing list, about an onboard modem, and posted to the list in Spanish. Lucky his error messages were in English and some of the volunteers were actually able to help him from distant India. something wrong in resolv.conf

Problem with default init level

Hello Luggers, I have RH 7.2 on my machine. In my /etc/inittab file the default init level is set to 5. Still my system boots up to text based login. my X server starts up just fine when i manually start it. Can somebody please help me with this? Maybe your wvdial configuration such that it does not automatically set the correct route. Check `route -n`, when u use wvdial, and see if the external IP assigned to u shows up as the default gateway. Everyone's Linux, Maxil to launch ELX Power SUNIL RAJANALA TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ TUESDAY, JULY 09, 2002 2:37:56 AM ] HYDERABAD: Everyone's Linux (ELX) in association with Maxil Technology Solutions, US, is gearing up to launch a Linux-based operating system, ELX Power desktop version across North America, Europe, Latin America and Australia by end-July this year. ELX is India's first commercial Linux-based Operating System, which matches Windows by every feature and provides the additional advantages of Linux's robustness and security. The Linux operating system has been developed by Hyderabad-based Everyone's Linux, formerly 3T solutions. Speaking to ET, Maxil Technology's MIS director, Raj Kosaraju said, the soft launch of ELX Power Desktop Version 1.0 took place during late June this year across North America including Canada. By the third week of July, the product will find its way into markets of Europe, Latin America, South Africa, Australia and the rest of the world, he said. ELX also plans to launch the product in India during August for just Rs 900 for Indian customers. To strengthen the relationship, Maxil proposes to enter into a joint venture by participating in ELX equity. "Right now, we are not a JV but we are planning to enter into equity participation in the near future. We are actually a strategic marketing alliance partner to ELX and are working towards handling a global marketing initiative through our network partners all across the globe. We are planning to invest quite substantially in ELX in the next few months to scale up the operations to meet a growing demand," Mr Raj said. He said Maxil will be investing to the tune of Rs 50 lakh immediately in the next three months and subsequently bring in additional funds keeping in line with business volumes and sales forecasts. The revenue model is based on a 55:45 ratio with Maxil sharing 45 percent with ELX from the revenues that accrue in terms of overall product sales. The advertising and promotional costs along with infrastructure and overheads will be borne by Maxil. Just as Walmart sells Lindows (Linux) based desktops which are much cheaper than big brands, Maxil is trying for a venture to make desktops available at 30-40 per cent less than the regular PC, Mr Kosaraju said. He said during the test phase, the pre-release version of ELX had 89,000 free downloads between April and June 2002, with most of the downloads from educational institutions, colleges, and universities. Well, there was thread on this last week, and it may also be useful to others, so I'm posting it. To let all users use wvdial without giving them root password or making wvdial setuid root, do this (tested on RH6.0) 1. put your wvdial binary in /usr/sbin or /usr/local/sbin (your pref) make sure permissions are no more than 755 (-rwxr-xr-x) 2. create /etc/pam.d/wvdial with the following: #%PAM-1.0 auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rootok.so auth required /lib/security/pam_console.so #auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so account required /lib/security/pam_permit.so The line with pam_pwdb is commented out. If you want wvdial to prompt for user's password (not root password), then uncomment that line. 3. create /etc/security/console.apps/wvdial with the following: PROGRAM=/usr/sbin/wvdial (or /usr/local/sbin/wvdial depending...) 4. create a symlink from /usr/bin/consolehelper to /usr/bin/wvdial (or /usr/local/bin/wvdial) 5. run wvdial as a normal user. -- Can't open /usr/fortunes. Lid stuck on cookie jar.

I think you can fix your problem by installing LILO or Grub on some partition rather than the MBR and making that the active partition. for example if your HDD is /dev/hda and you have Windoze on /dev/hda1 and Linux on /dev/hda2, put Grub on /dev/hda2 and DDO on /dev/hda (the MBR). Then use FDISK to set /dev/hda2 as the active partition. I think this should work. Try using nmap to scan the ports and see if any unncessary services are not running in the background. Just check if the admin (or you!) logged in from a cable connection somewhere!

For those of you who use gnome-terminal to start console applications from gnome, bear in mind that it no longer accepts quotes around multi word application names. So: gnome-terminal -e "pine -i" now becomes gnome-terminal -e pine -i but gnome-terminal -e "pine" still works. -- Speak the truth. hello, is it true that in order to install Linux on a laptop/desktop which comes pre-loaded with WinXP i have to format the ENTIRE hard drive? if so, is there a way i can avoid formatting the hard disk? are there any generic V.90 56k software modem drivers available for Linux which would be used for software modems of all makes? Is it actually Running.......i.e. Telnet / FTP services..?

Hi� Luggers, As I installed/configured Telnet / FTP server in RH Linux 7.2 If I checks it by following command of processes then it is showing me that the �xinetd� service is running. And if I checks it by �nmapfe� utility the scanning is showing me that Telnet and FTP ports are open in Red color. I m going to logon as a user ROOT to LOCALHOST with its password for Telnet session it gives me following error : telnet localhost or telnet 127.0.0.1 Login : root Password : Login incorrect Connection closed by foreign host. And in FTP session when logon as a user ROOT with its password it gives me following error : ftp localhost or ftp 127.0.0.1 Login : root Password : 530 Login incorrect Login failed. It is also not allowing me to Telnet Linux machine (192.168.0.1) from Windows machine (192.168.0.2) It gives me following error : For Telnet : Could not open a connection to 192.168.0.1 For FTP : ftp >ftp:connect:10071 ftp> But if I give ls command then it shows me �not connected� msg. hello luggerz stuff going on here is real interesting for us. we are a group of 3 in final yr comp engg and were looking for a project when we met trevor who helped us with it and showed us some work. the Project Resource Center seems exciting. we spoke to trevor abt it in detail. we'd like to breal some ice now. we'll take up the resposibilty of making a list of projects if u ppl tell us a few places wher we can find them. we'll have the PRC up n running as soon as possible. trevor had three long term projects for us to choose from and the BootCD one sounded good. we take that up guys... do keep the guidance flowing... does any1 know why the qmail /var/qmail is the root of the qmail file structure? i mean doesnt that go agains the unix file structure. since /bin/ etc files get stored in /var/ ? wouldnt it have been prefered if it would have been /usr/qmail or something ? also what bout the MUA's supporting qmail for POP mail access. which ones support qmail? what bout outlook and netscape?
