Linux video problems

I have installed RH Linux 6.2 on my PC: AMD K6/400, 128 MB Ram, S3 TRIO 3D/2X with 4 MB , Samsung 55v mionitor. After successfully booting, the screenbalnks out . I hear 4 short beeps. The video comes on after I press any key. This makes it difficult to use the system. I have installed same Linux 6.2 on my older Pentium I PC. Could teh AMD CPU have anything to do with this? Generally, there is also a command 'make uninstall' but it all depends on Makefile. So you should keep Makefile in case you plan to uninstall the software installed by make. How to connect using wvdial?

This may seem lame question but heck I don't seem to be able to connect to net using wvdial It gives the message : PPP negotiation detected. --> Starting pppd at Fri Mar 8 18:44:47 2002 But I can't view webpages,send/receive mail ..... I have no other option but to use rp3 (which I guess is frontend to wvdial) plz help I don't want to use X server just for connecting to net -- You need no longer worry about the future. This time tomorrow you'll be dead.

Hi friends, I have redhat 7.1 installed along with win XP and Win 98 in dual booting. Since last two days when i select Linux for booting , i just get the message ***** Loading linux ............. Uncompressing linux .......Ok .Booting the kernal ******** and nothing else is displayed on the screen instead of the usual parameters of booting .How do i resolve this problem. Please help me !! ext3 vs Reiserfs

Hi! After having a really bad xperience with ext2 I installed RHL 7.2 with ext3 Earlier I had experimented with Reiserfs and found this interesting thing: I have /home partition (not containing ANY data ) of about 125 MB and I converted it to Reiserfs and surprisingly 33 MB was used (probably for journalling puposes) Now on another Linux forum one user claimed that he had used most of the journalling filesystems and found Reiserfs to be best and fastest. Also I have read that Reiserfs journals only metadata while ext3 journals both metadata and data. I have given a lot of thought but converting / to Reiser is very difficult.Has anyone tried this? So which is the best filesystem ext3 or Reiser? -- Money may buy friendship but money cannot buy love.

You can use checkinstall to uninstall/remove files which are created during installation(You need to install this package,Check http://freshmeat.net) or you can write your script to remove these files. hi , I happened to come across your name while searching for a possible remedy to the problem I encountered during my solaris installation. I have just one hard disk and I installed a windows 2000 first in the "c" partition with 4GB size. Then when I tried to install the solaris 8 following problem occured.( I am just pasting the same error message you have submitted to on user group as I am facing the SAME situtation) ----------------- Warning : ACPI Tables not in Reclaim Memory (next screen) Warning : Resource Conflict - both devices are added Non - ACPI device : PNP0C01 Memory : 9FC00 - 9FFFF, FEE0000-FEF7FFF, FEF8000-FEFFFFF, FEC0000-FEDFFFF, FFF00000-FFFFFFF ACPI device : PNP0C01 Memory : 9FC00-9FFFF, E0000-EFFFF, 40FFC00-FEFFFF -------------- After this, all the hardware devices are scanned and no conflict sign is marked against each device found... it proceeds as usual and comes at the screen where it's about to start the installation with the option "Solaris Jumpstart" after which it's supposed to show the starting dialog box of the installation... but the screen goes white with a stationery cursor blinking at the top and the keyboard stops responding... I do most of my regular work on Linux. However, I do use M$ for wordprocessing and games. I have never used IE even on Windows (although I have run it under Linux with Wine, just for kicks)... I use Opera AbiWord is decent for basic stuff like hacking out a simple letter etc., but is really very inadequate for anything beyond that. I haven't used Kword. I used to use StarOffice 5.2 for a while but it was very slow and buggy. Anything slower and buggier than M$ software is a VERY bad piece of software. I haven't used the latest staroffice, though. For image editing, The Gimp rocks. X-Fig is great for drawing figures. Its got a rather tacky and kludgy interface but is very powerful if you spend 30 mins figuring it out. X-CD Roast is generally adequate for burning CDs, but can't write multisession CDs E-mail handling is miles ahead on *nix than anything Billy Boy can ever dream of.

Dear Luggers...... yesterday after consultation with dr.nagarjun i hav mailed u a modified version of the draft proposed by Mr.lakdawala of fsf india. The draft according to him proposes to take Free SOftware to the masses by introducing the concept of Free SOftware in all the schools and colleges all around india. We second this opinion of his and i would like to personally thank him for putting down the proposal in such a neat format for others to make use of. From the perspective of the lug, we would like to propogate/market Free Software and also make it our aim to introduce Gnu/Linux to the various budding students all over india. Thus in this initiative of our i would like to start with all the Engineering Colleges in and around bbay and Maharashtra. Just recently we concluded a very very FRUITFUL trip to Rajaram Bapu College Of Engineering, Kolhapur which saw the Dr.Nagarjun nd the others delivering 3 quality dayz of trainin nd introduction on Free SOftware and Linux to 70 buddin engineers......soem of whom hav even joined the ILUG-BOM mailin list. For the 1st workshop, i spent close to 6000/- from my pocket which later was re-imbursed by the college authorities. I tool this liberty since i knew the college management personally. I know the comercial part out here is tricky......nd the lug has had a bad xperience leavin it with a sour taste in it's mouth. But if i am goin to co-ordiante these workshops on a routine basis i expect some financial support and backing. After pondering abt it for sometime, dr. nagarjun suggested that we could dash the feelers/letter to the various colleges all over bombay,Maharashtra nd after havin comfirmed dates in hand abt the event propose to the FSF abt our initiative. FSF then agress to sanction some funds for us to further the cause and we carry out the preps. I further would like to mention another of dr.nags suggestion. We could also conduct a few commercial workshops asap and garner some funds enough for us to continue with our cause in spreading the word of Free SOftware......Nd this time around we'l take the precautions to prevent us burnin our fingers the way we did last time. Sorry for starting a new thread in this topic. Actually, I don't know how far people have gone in this thread. Well, I heard someone calling upon Cygwin, hence I'm here. This mail is intended for people who want Linux on Win2k only for development kinda thing, otherwise you can use VMWare to install the complete Linux inside Win2k. Mind you, even though VMWare create a swap file for Linux filesystem, it is damn fast as compared to Linux on FAT32. Ok, regarding the development kinda thing : Currently there are at least 3 active projects which are targeted at porting GNU utils on Windows. 1. Cygwin : A project by RedHat Inc. - The only drawbacks are huge size & needs to be installed online(I guess) Otherwise a good piece of software. Allows creation of DLLs as well. www.sources.redhat.com/cygwin 2. MingW : This project is currently unmaintained as far as GNU compliance goes - started out with GNU compliance. This is now part of a project called BloodShed Compilers - again free. www.mingw.org, google for Bloodshed And my favourite : 3. DJGPP : This is a full-fledged suite of GNU Utils including different shells, compilers, E-Macs, binutis, filutils etc. This project is maintained by a guy named DJ Delorie & others. Very good in all respects & actively maintained. Though the size of the project is large about 200 MB - including all additional libraries like ALLEGRO - A Low - LEvel Game ROutine for game development etc, it is distributed as small parts in form of zips. This is an Open Source project, so can get the source code if anyone wants. I use it on Win2k at home - without any problems. It uses COFF with MS-DOS stub (header) added. Yes, It doesnt load on startup. wu-ftpd will be started by `xinetd' whenever you try to connect to it using a FTP client. `xinetd' should be running for this to happen. First `su' to root. Then enable wu-ftpd by setting the option `disable = no' in the file /etc/xinetd.d/wu-ftpd. FTP Problem

Oops... I am sorry for posting the subject incorrectly. So here we go This may seem redundant but I need the solution to my problem and any feedback will be appreciated. I am want to set up an FTP only server on my desktop computer's linux partition so that I can share files with my friends as I used to in windows using Serv U. I don't intend to use this computer as a server for any other type of protocol such as HTTP, etc. I have the wu-ftp daemon (wu-ftpd) installed on my Red Hat 7.2 partition. Now here is my problem. How do I setup user a/cs for my FTP server. I know the answer to this is rather easy but despite hours of scratching my head over it, I am not able to do it.....dunno why.....also, wu-ftpd does not load on start up....{or so I think}...thanx in advance... Orcaa !!

GPL is taking court action against a violator. The FSF is taking legal action against "Progress Software Corp." who attempted to ship a binary of "Gemini" -- a mysql storage module without providing sources. Progress Software sells a CDROM called NuSphere MySQL Advantage. This contains various applications like Apache, PHP and MySQL. As a very important part of HA database services and crash recovery, Gemini is very popular. But the source code is under wraps . ie A GPL violation by Progress Software. The question is not about GPL standing for trial, but the point about MySQL AB selling ``dual licensed'' editions and Progress Software not being allowed. IMHO GPL will win ! [-SNIP-] EBEN MOGLEN's Affidavit : 19-a.. Redistribution must itself occur under GPL and only GPL, with no additional license conditions. (See Exhibit B, §2(b)); 19-b.. Redistribution must include ``source code,'' the human-readable form of computer programs that allows programmers to understand and modify computer programs for themselves, as opposed to ``object code,'' which is the ``machine language'' version of computer programs that is very difficult for programmers to understand or modify 19-c.. So, if you were presented with a game of chess and you did not know how to play it, how would you go about learning it? How would you go about learning it if you were told that out of the six games you played only 2 resulted in a victory? How do you figure out which game you have won? How do you figure out which strategies were successful or which strategies are a strict no-no? These are some of the issues you would face when posed a problem of learning a new concept, or in this case learning a new game. These are exactly the same issues which a system would have to deal with if it were to ever try and learn something using trial-and-error. Now, consider the implications of using such a learning mechanism: exploring the surface of Mars by learning how to navigate on-the-fly, building a world-class checkers-playing program using GAs and NNs, learning to acquire "soft" versions of a dictionary given a parallel corpus, learning new strategies for computer-controlled opponents in the latest 3D first-person shooting game... the list goes on. If you've missed out on the Machine Learning seminar given previously, then this would be a good time to attend the second of the Machine Learning seminars viz. Reinforcement Learning, since, we will recap some of the pertinent basics of Machine Learning, cover the basics of Reinforcement Learning, discuss some of the technologies involved and then round-off with a motivating case study. The BIOS used to play a major role during the 16-bit real mode days. DOS used the bios for I/O as did Win3.x and (I think) Win95. Modern OSes talk directly to the disk controller, so after the kernel is loaded the BIOS has no role to play. Thus it is important for the Kernel to be located somewhere the BIOS can access it, but after that it doesn't matter. I can deliver my customer a web application built using PostgreSQL/PHP/Apache and retain all Property rights without violating GPL. That's because my application *uses* free software. It's not *comprised* of it. This is a difference many people fail to understand or choose to ignore while arguing against GPLed software. I'm looking for a [gui] mail client that (doesn't suck): 1) Allows me to use any smtp server (with authorization) 2) Supports pop3 at least. imap4 is optional 3) Works in ``offline mode''. That is, when I'm offline, it should queue the mails and only attempt to contact the smtp server when I go online (as in outlook). Should not depend on /usr/lib/sendmail in any way. 4) Supports mail filtering and sorting, pref. with the help of procmail. i.e. it should use procmail if I ask it to. 5) Stores mail in mbox format. 6) Supports search through messages by regex. 7) Let's me use Vim as editor for composing mails. I can add more to the list, but this much will do. Pine doesn't have 1 (auth), 2, 3, 4, 6. Mutt, AFAIK, doesn't have 1, 4. Most GUI clients don't have 6 and 7. Outlook doesn't have 5, 6, 7 (and 4, if you don't like the message rules in outlook). I've been living with sendmail+fetchmail+procmail+pine+vim all this while but I want something easier now. I want to get rid of sendmail in that equation. I'd like something like Outlook plus a portable file format, regex searches, procmail-like rules, and the ``Let Me Use VIM'' feature. Suggestions? Hi All, I have a java application which uses jdbc-odbc bridge. Now I have two options for deploying that application on a linux machine:- 1. Modify the source to use JDBC driver to connect to MSSQL server. 2. Configure ODBC DSN on linux machine. Which method is better ? I tried configuring ODBC DSN but couldn't succeed. One more doubt. I have server system that configurations is: motherboard(l440gx) comes with onboard scsi controller and builtin intel ethernet card(eepro100). using this i configured as a mail server on redhat Linux 7.0. Yes, we do. In fact, This card has been supported since Red Hat 6.0 (that's the version I started out with). sndconfig is easily able to auto-detect the card but it reports the card by it's processor's name (Ensonic something) instead of the brand name. Hi all! This is Mallikarjun from Bangalore.In one of my company i have to implement Hardware raid. First we configured mail server using follwing configuration: pentium II with L440gx motherboard which is having onboard SCSI controller .Here i don't find any problems.(operating system is redhat7.0) Now my company is recommending to go for Hardware raid and they purchased Hardware raid controller i.e also SCSI adaptec.Also i want to update to redhat 7.1 or 7.2.I need all of your's help.Here following are my questions: 1. How to disable inbuilt scsi controller because iam using seperate raid card.Is it necessary. 2. I want build raid level 1 i.e mirroring with 2 ibm scsi harddisks.Incase if iget any problems while implementing raid how should i trouble shoot myself or to whom should i contact. problem with modules

hi there everyone, i have adoubt, how can we have the system correctly boot with the required modules, if i have 2 kernels which differ only by a patch ? i have compiled 2.4.17 and the same one with with a premptive patch. the system.map of both the kernels is in the boot and also i had compiled the modules of both the kernels, however the second kernel( preemptiv ) has overwritten the modules anyway. can i copy the modues of both of them as different directries in /lib/modules/ and have them loaded accoreding to the kernel from whihc i am booting the computer. regards -rahul __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? mysql/linux problem - TIME_WAIT sockets

I'm facing a problem running mysql on red hat 6.2. # uname -a Linux dummy2.ezee 2.2.14-12 #1 Tue Apr 25 13:04:07 EDT 2000 i686 unknown The problem is that after running the mysql server for a while, clients stop getting connections. netstat returns the following: # netstat -a | grep -E 'mysql.*TIME_WAIT' | wc -l 14605 And those sockets are not getting closed. Not after waiting for 120 secs. Not even 120 minutes! I think the problem is not with mysql but somewhere else. There are only 67 mysql processes running, so I guess the processes that were using these sockets are probably dead already (assuming mysql forks for every connection). No clue. How do I free these port numbers so that other sockets can be bound to these ports? Or have I got it totally wrong? Thanks in advance. Hi Rahul, In your case the modules will get overwritten in the same directory (/lib/modules/2.4.17). If you use the different kernel version then the modules will get installed in the /lib/modules/linu.kernel.version.number directory. The module loading depends upon the System.map and modules.conf file. So don't forget to move this newly generated System.map file to /boot/ directory. I think you moved the System.map file but didn't do make modules and make modules_install.Hence no modules get listed in the System.map file though they they are included in kernel as loadble modules. Basically the kernel compiling order should be: make menuconfig make dep make bzImage make modules make modules_install copy bzImage to the /boot/ directory rename the old System.map to System.bak copy System.map to the /boot/ directory Do not forget to save the old .config file(which keeps the track of the selected options while compiling the kernel) before compiling. problem with loading modules

hi there, i compiled 2.4.17 and made the modules for it. now i have compiled the same kernel with the preemtive kernel patch, but i have not made the modules for that. this causes a problem as the (preemtive)kernel dosent find any modules at boot. and hence i cannot use them. Now if i make modules for the preemtive kernel too, will they overwrite the previous modules. or will they be installed in a seperate directory then /lib/modules/2.4.17 ?? it would be good if i could boot from either of the kernels and use the modules. can somone throw some light on this ? regards -rahul __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello! I am planning to buy an *IDE* CD Writer - that works on Linux. I did some homework - saw the XCDRoast page and the ILUG archives for past queries. Well, making changes to fstab and lilo are OK with me but installing modules is something I haven't done. Could someone suggest a readily available (in Bombay) IDE CD Writer that is *known* to work well under Linux? Please add tips - they'll certainly help :). problem with quota

I would like to know where to check files owned by users in entire volumes I am administring quotas with webmin the problem I faced is one user had occupied too much disk space so I move the mails and deleted the id and recreated the id and restored the emails but now I dont know where the dead files are lying and now when I check qoutas through webmin I get the stray files with UID I dont know where to search for this dead files Please Help! kernel with IPTables module

Hello Everybody, I'm using Redhat Linux 7.1(kernel 2.4.2-2) and Freeswan 1.91. I recompiled the kernel for the IPSec-VPN.My IPSec module gets installed perfectly and eth0 and eth1 interface are up but I want use IPTables with it.I can see ipsec0 interface and run all the ipsec related commands that means IPSsec is working perfectly. Even though I select IPTables while configuring.Those modules didn't get loaded in the kernel.I can see the listing of those modules in the /lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ directory. I tried to load those modules manualy by using insmod command #insmod ip_tables but gave the error /lib/modules/2.4.2-2 /kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o: unresolved symbol nf_unregister_sockopt Can someone tell me where I went wrong. Significance of 1024 cylinders during Linux installation

Hai Everyone, While installing linux, I was prompted to have the primary partition within the first 1024 cylinders. What is the significance of this message? This happened when I was installing in dual OS mode with Win 2000 as the other OS. This never happened with the previous versions of windows. Is it to do anything with the partition size. If yes, then why not with other versions of windows as I could install linux having win98 with the same size partitions. Advance thanks for your answer. http://www.gamers.org/~quinet/lilo Since mid-2001, most Linux distributions include some patched versions of LILO (the LInux LOader) that support VGA or VESA graphical modes and make it possible to have a nice background image while booting. Starting with SuSE Linux 7.2, the SuSE distribution includes an interesting extension to LILO that allows a programmer to define some callback functions that are triggered when some events occur (key pressed, timeout, ...). It gives a much greater flexibility than the other extensions that are provided by most of the other Linux distributions, including the new graphical modes that have recently been added to the official version of LILO 22.x. While testing the SuSE version of LILO and the helper program mkbootmsg, I was wondering if the timer callbacks together with the function that copies parts of the image to the screen could be used for creating animations. I quickly found out that it was indeed possible to enhance the boot screen with animations. Since my friends liked the results, I decided to share them on this web site. These animated boot screens have been tested with SuSE Linux 7.2 and 7.3. They should also work with other Linux distributions, as long as you install the appropriate version of LILO. Hi Linuxers, I was wondering if I can reasonably run X on a 486 with 8 MB RAM, and run a GTK+ program. I don't need the whole of Gnome to run, and will need to run only a single program. It perfectly acceptible if it takes 5 minutes to load, and thrashes like crazy for a few minutes before settling down. Basically need to write some software for an event in college. I'll get at least one P-III with lots of RAM and hard disk space which I intend to use as a server, with rest of the (recycled) machines network booting. Vinay

Hi: I have the same problems stated here. But after went to the website you pointed to and download bott.img file. I was not able to make floppy out of it. I found out boot.img listed on that site is way over 1.44MB. I wonder if I did something wrong? Please advice. Regarding Swap partition

Dear all, Recently we made swap partition of 2Gb and this is not at all used by the server. swapoff -a First we made 2Gb partition of swap mkswap /dev/sdb1 swapon -a (i tried swapon /dev/sdb1 ) and in /proc/swaps the entry for this partition is exist. whenever i will check swap usage (free) it showing 0 and it is not using old swap partition also.we made all the required entries in fstab also.But the server is using full ram. CD-ROm problems in RH7.2

can't read vcd

Just installed red hat 7.2. Things are ok, except for this. It's not able to read any of my video CDs. I'm able to mount the vcd, but I can't read a file (I can read directories). Here's the cdrom portion of my fstab: /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0 Here's what I'm doing. # eject -t # mount /mnt/cdrom # ls /mnt/cdrom/mpegav avseq01.dat # cp /mnt/cdrom/mpegav/avseq01.dat . cp: reading `/mnt/cdrom/mpegav/avseq01.dat': Input/output error # echo $? 1 # umount /mnt/cdrom # eject # rm -rf / I tried with different video CDs (I have many =) but none of them seem to work. And the behaviour is the same - can read directories but can't read files. Also, other CDs (like the rh7.2 cd itself) work just fine. It's just with video CDs this problem. And the same video CDs were working ok with windows until last week when I removed windows. I have *enough* space on my disk. I can't even do something like this: # cat /mnt/cdrom/mpegav/avseq01.dat > /dev/null cat: /mnt/cdrom/mpegav/avseq01.dat: Input/output error Anyone faced this problemo? What do you do? Hi I had a same problem when reading three VCDs. 'plaympeg' said it cant find mpeg data. 'gtv' was unable to play it. 'cp' reported an I/O error. I tried to view it from Windows and it worked ! Then I tried to copy it using Windows. Almost the whole dat file was copied except the last 5 seconds saying that "the system can't read the specified device". This happened for all the VCDs. But the VCDs surface seemed to have no problem as they were newly written. And it looks very improbable that all the VCDs which i had, had errors in the *last* 5 seconds ! I think that there is some kind of protection mechanism built into the CD. But I could cheat it by using VCDGear (under windows). I first tried to use VCDGear under Linux with option 'dat2mpg' but it said that it couldn't find mpeg data. VCDGear under Windows converted the '<cdrom drive>:\mpegav\Avseq01.dat' file into "<dest drive>:\Movies\Avseq01.mpg' without any errors ! ! I used dat to mpg conversion option to achieve this. Now the mpg file plays fine in Linux. I think VCDClipper also could have done the job. Well, my guess... Since Windows could read *almost* the whole file (actually i think the whole file), it seems that there is some bit in the CD file system (or similar kind of information) that indicates whether it is legal (??) to copy the file or not. Now whether to make use of that or not might be upto the copying program. Now if the cdrom driver in Linux checks the info before copying and windows driver checks it after the data has been copied (before writing the directory entry), the situation seems to be consistentent. Now whether that kind of information really exists on a VCD FS is to be discovered....anybody knows ? Well, initially i thought of a long way... It could have been achieved this way....(in Windows) - First make a drive empty by moving all the data to a different drive. - Now, data if written on this drive, will start from cluster 2. - Then copy the dat file to this drive unitl it gives the error message. - Now the FAT entries have been made, only the directory entry needs to be written. - Next instead of saying OK to that error, cold reboot your PC by pressing directly the reset key (!!) - Goto to real mode. - unlock your disk using 'lock' - use Norton's Diskedit supporting FAT 32 to make a root directory entry which points to cluster 2 as starting cluster. Also the size of the file and attributes have to be written here. OR writing a C program to directly write the directry entry of 32 bytes to the root directory without using standard function or DOS services but by using bios interrupts. - Now after rebooting the PC the file should be playable (most probably ! The trick applied is to induce deliberate bit-errors and hope that the stronger error tolerance of CD players will allow them to carry on while the more finicky CD-ROM drives of the computers will complain. Philips, the co-inventor of the CD has been able to force companies making such CDs to print a warning stating that such products are not CDs. They can't even print the famous 'CD' logos. IMHO, this is the height of idioticity on part of the new CD makers because there are some CD players too that fail to play those CDs. Also, once your CD wears, there's a greater chance that your CD player may fail to recover from so many errors. Lastly, computer software that has strong error correction built-in will still be able to read the CDs A detailed article regarding this appeared a few weeks back on the _Business Times_ page of _The Times of India_ as the main headline and I've written what I understood from that article. CD ROm detection problem in RH 7.2

Hi Kunal and others trying to help, I removed the append="hdc=ide-scsi" from lilo.conf. ran lilo. booted the machine. And inserted a PCQ CD inside the drive and tried mount when it did not automount. Then removed the fstab line for CDROM. Rebooted the machine. Still the same results. I am not worried about CD recording at this moment. Machine history: Loaded PCQ 7.1 in July and running smoothly since then. CDRecord and ordinary CD usage with the lilo line "append...." was there. Upgraded recently to RH 7.2 using Seascope CD's. The CD's are with me and the kernel being used is 2.4.7-10 . Initially I had a installation problem and I got another set of CD's with me now. The install has worked smoothly so far. But the CD ROM is not being read. I went to hardware browser in Gnome after logging in as root Window shows on left CDROM Devices Right Hand top side shows SAMSUND CD-R/RW DRIVE SW-208F Bottom right hand side window shows manufacturer: unknown driver: ignore Device: /dev/hdc So I am a bit confused. I believe his means that the CDROM is detected in /dev/hdc and ths SAMSUNG ... that is seen means that the CDROM drive is being properly detected by some software component however the bottom part of the window is worrying and shows that the CDROm detection has some problems. is this Kernel Related? Please note that the same system has caldera loaded in another partition with 2.4.2 and the system is running smoothly. The next time you boot into linux your CDRW should be detected as an ordinary IDE CDROM. But then, you won't be able to write CDs through linux, 'coz all the CD- Writing softwares in linux (including cdrecord and Xcdroast) need your drive to be SCSI. Now, to make your IDE CDRW (now detected as an IDE CDROM) work for writing CDs, what you can use is an emulation driver - ide-scsi. This is precisely what you've been seeing in your lilo.conf. This is a modular driver which can be used using modprobe or insmod. The advantage is - install when you want, uninstall after using it. I guess, you know how to uninstall / remove modules. When you add this driver, just check out the working of the driver using #cdrecord -scanbus If you get the output saying the HOST/DEVICE/LUN ids, then you can be pretty sure that the driver will work for you. The only problem I faced was that the normal IDE-CD emulation driver used to interfere with it. So, to be on a safer side, make sure that you remove ide-cd before inserting ide-scsi. The ide-scsi driver is available online or can be found at PCQ's wesite (in fact, it comes built into PCQ Linux Distro). After you're done with the CDRW for writing, remove the ide-scsi driver using #rmmod sg #rmmod ide-scsi These are dependant modules. Then insert the usual ide-cd driver using #modprobe ide-cd And you'll be back with your CDRW as IDE CDROM. Problems with installing GCC

Hi Luggers ! I'm trying to install gcc-2.96-84.i386.rpm ( taken from the PCQ Linux CD) on a RHL 6.2 (zoot ?) m/c. The installation is almost a yr old and it does not have any of the development tools as well as compiler .. When I issue the following command $ rpm -i gcc-2.96-84.i386.rpm I get the following error Error : The current version of rpm only supports packages having major number <= 3. I checked up with rpm docs and cud understand that in the above rpm, _2.96_ is supposed to be the major number. Then in order to upgrade the current installation of rpm, which I thought cud be the cause of the trouble, I tried to use the rpm installation binary available from the same CD. I got the same error for it. In fact, I got the same error for all the packages that I tried to install/upgrade. What cud be wrong here? Colored Prompt and other tweaks

Hi! I was wondering how [ OK ] is displayed in color. I found the /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions file. I got the 'color code' and assigned PS1="\\033[1;32m$" |----- my prompt Now my prompt appears in green color!!!. I would like to know what do those numbers and symbols mean. I figured out that 32m stands for a color and changing the value changes the color. I found out another tweak by which one can have a message on the console while all the commands scroll below it. Here is the exact command. $ clear;echo -e '\033[018;25r'; cat ascii_logo_file I use this in rc.sysinit to dislay a logo while other stuff scrolls below it. Kinda looks good ;-) Again I would like to know what does the stuff mean. BTW has anyone used a kernel patch which shows a welcome screen ? Sorry for posting without subject . The thing is I'm very frustrated for putting my trust on Linux :-( OK I had enough of Linux (period) I've been using Linux for almost 2 years now. After getting bored of Windows I decided to remove it from my PC.I was running only Red Hat Linux 7.1 when I had a major filesystem crash. I even lost some of important data. One of my friends suggested that 7.1 had a buggy kernel and I should switch to 6.2 I installed 6.2 and everything was fine until today... The boot process 'dropped me to a shell' and advised me to run fsck manually. I obliged. Out of the blue I got a truckload of messages telling me that something was wrong and that should it fix it ? Amazingly the only answer was yes.I continued pressing 'y' for about 5 mins and then the ordeal was over. I logged in just to find that my ncurses libraries had been deleted ! And horror of horrors: my entire rpm database was gone... I did not want any more surprises. Being frustrated I decided to give myself a break. I removed Linux and now I'm running good ol' Win 98 :-) Anyone reading this please keep in mind : Curse Windows , Hate Windows ,Kick Windows but never and I say *never* remove Windows. [OT] - Linking of an absolute executable file ???

Hi Guys, I'm having trouble in understanding the theory behind the compiler strategies for generating absolute object files. Pls. someone guide me on this topic. The main concern is : Linux kernel is compiled to start loading from a particular memory address (cf. TLK - The Linux Kernel) 1. How is this achieved by the compiler??? 2. How do we decide from where to start load an absolute object file in memory, i.e. how is the memory address of the entry point of the code decided??? 3. If this depends on the locations of the IVT, GDT etc. then where to find all this information i.e the sizes of all these memory tables??? 4. Are there anymore issues involved in generating absolute object files?? Pls. help me in this aspect - more detailed information - the better for me. Hi, I've been trying to compile Nautilus with Mozilla support built in. I built Mozilla 0.9.7 from source and compiled it OK. Nautilus also built OK. But when I try to view a HTML file in Nautilus it says "The Web Page View encountered an error starting and can't continue" As a more generic query... doesn't Natilus dump status messages anyhere? Or have an option to display less Windows-like error messages? Regards, Vinay
