Hi, Digressing from the topic,I would like to ask as to the difference between Core2Duo processor with corresponding motherboard and PentiumD 2.80 Ghz Dual Core processor with Intel D101GGC motherboard in terms of computing power and speed?Like, I asked the reseller for a core2 duo but he got confused and gave me the above processor.I am in a dilemma whether I should ask him to exchange because one of my friends told me there's hardly any difference.Isthat true?What's your opinion? Fedora Core 6, Core 2 Duo with DG965RYCK motherboard

Hi, Today I installed Fedora Core 6 ( Respin ) on my Core 2 Duo system. The system's specs are: - Core 2 Duo E6400 Processor - DG965RYCK mobo - 512MB DDR2 @ 533MHz ( It should've been 1024MB but the other sticks not working ) - 80GB Seagate HDD No add on cards at all. Initial impressions: The system boots up really fast. The board is quite new so requires a bit of tweaking and playing around. The default FC6 kernel doesnt support the onboard PATA controller ( JMicron ). The problem: Since the kernel doesn't have the driver built in for the JMicron chip, the kernel boots from the CD but it doesn't find the installation media and asks for a driver disk or alternative installation methods. Solution: There are two solutions to this problem: - You can use a SATA or USB CD/DVD drive instead of a PATA - You can pass the following kernel parameters to get it going: pci=nommconfig irqpoll all-generic-ide For the first option to work correctly you should be installing on a SATA HDD. You also need to change some BIOS settings: Advanced -> Drive Settings -> SATA -> AHCI ( by default its IDE ) This should get the installer started normally. Install process: FC6 has a very intuitive installer. I selected several packages according to my needs: - GNOME - KDE - Development tools / libraries etc.. etc.. The complete install size was around 3.1GB. The system took about 15 mins flat to install everything and it was up. But one word of caution, Fedora Core's installer, Anaconda, will add only pci=nommconfig kernel option in grub.conf. You need to manually edit it and add all three options ( see above ) to get your system booting properly. After thoughts: You can try playing around with the options to suit your need. My installation was done on a PATA drive. If you have a SATA drive then it will be much easier since the kernel already has the driver for the SATA controller hence it wont complain plus it will boot up without the all-generic-ide option. If your install is on a SATA drive and you dont see your PATA CD/DVD/RW/ROM them you need to pass the all-generic-ide option. The drives will show up properly. One more problem that was evident after the install was random lockups with the default kernel. FC6 ( respin ) shipped with the 2.6.18 kernel. I simply upgraded it to the latest, 2.6.19 i believe, and the random lock ups went away. Even in this kernel I had to pass all three options for the system to work normally. For some, removing the irqpoll option may work. For me it didnt work. Xorg would come up but for some reason it kept on restarting. I had to reboot the system and manually add the irqpoll option after which the system was stable. I used the respin with the hopes that the updated installer kernel would not need any tweaking to get it started the steps remain the same for the official Fedora Core 6 release. The user experience on this is amazing. I used GNOME ( yes, I was a BIG KDE fan a while ago but now I am not ) with Compiz enabled ( System -> Preferences -> Desktop Effects -> Enable ). It rocks! I then installed beryl ( yum install beryl-gnome ) and its even slicker than compiz. For intel users its no problem but those with NVidia or ATI will need to get their proprietary drivers installed and configured first. It worked out of the box for me. Some stats: - GNOME with Beryl enabled with the system working as a http, ftp, mysql, etc.. etc.. server it consumed about 250MBs of RAM. - Install takes around 15 minutes to complete ( All 5 CDs required ) - Boot up hardly takes 15 seconds - System shows a bogomips of approximately 8400 ( both processors combined ) Hope this helps someone out there who is struggling to get Fedora Core installed on his/her Core 2 Duo system :P -- Regards, Dinesh A. Data recovery on a crashed drive with Linux FS

Hi peeps, My Samsung SP1213C ( 120GB ) SATA disk has crashed. Its making horrible clicking sounds. The disk is not reading much. Though GRUB does come up and the kernel does start booting up but it finally panics after not being able to find initrd ( Yes, I use Fedora Core 2 :P ). I had some important family pictures and stuff in there. I tried booting to Windows and using the EXT2FS reader but its of no use. It cant read anything. It gives a bunch of read errors. I spoke to my vendor and he said that none of the recovery guys he knows can recover a disk with a Linux FS. Also, if I give it to some third party who opens up the drive, my drives warranty will be void. Samsung is of no help. They're pathetic :( I mean they'll just replace the drive. They wont take any responsibility for the data! But I guess thats normal, right? I'm not sure what I should do at this point. Can anybody help out?? Any suggestions??? -- Regards, Dinesh A. Joshi

The full text of the 287 page report, entitled "Economic impact of open source software on innovation and the competitiveness of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector in the EU," is available online (PDF). The report provides the most thorough and comprehensive look at the contributions of the FLOSS community that I've ever seen. While most of the statics and numbers are geared toward the EU and European nations in general (the lead contractor of the study was UNU-MERIT from the Netherlands), the study nevertheless provides a fascinating look at free software and its impact on the world at large. Particularly stunning is the estimated time to reproduce this software in proprietary format (131,000 person years) and the estimated amount of donated programming effort in monetary terms (800 million Euros per year). Here's some more highlights pulled straight from the text (emphasis mine): * Almost two-thirds of FLOSS software is still written by individuals; firms contribute about 15% and other institutions another 20%. * Europe is the leading region in terms of globally collaborating FLOSS software developers, and leads in terms of global project leaders, followed closely by North America (interestingly, more in the East Coast than the West). Asia and Latin America. * The existing base of quality FLOSS applications with reasonable quality control and distribution would cost firms almost Euro 12 billion to reproduce internally. This code base has been doubling every 18-24 months over the past eight years, and this growth is projected to continue for several more years. * This existing base of FLOSS software represents a lower bound of about 131 000 real person-years of effort that has been devoted exclusively by programmers. As this is mostly by individuals not directly paid for development, it represents a significant gap in national accounts of productivity. Annualised and adjusted for growth this represents at least Euro 800 million in voluntary contribution from programmers alone each year, of which nearly half are based in Europe. * Firms have invested an estimated Euro 1.2 billion in developing FLOSS software that is made freely available. Such firms represent in total at least 565 000 jobs and Euro 263 billion in annual revenue. India moves to launch Creative Commons at Mumbai function in coming week FN Premier technological institute IIT Bombay is to launch the Indian chapter of Creative Commons during its annual Technology Festival of India, shortly. The Creative Commons (CC) is a global non-profit working to expand the range of creative work available for others "legally to build upon and share." It allows people to issue creative works under a license that allows more flexibility than the default "all rights reserved" of copyright law. >From its modest cyberhome at cc-india.org, the Indian branch of the global movement is spreading the ideas that there are options to copyright, when it comes to building creativity and sharing knowledge widely. Creative Commons enables copyright holders to grant some or all of their rights to the public, while retaining others, through a variety of licensing and contract schemes. The intention is to avoid the problems current copyright laws create for the sharing of information. In a world where digital-content rules, sharing of knowledge and creative products has become far easier. Some globally successful volunteer projects -- like the Wikipedia, among the top 20 most visited sites -- have scaled up phenomenally by basing themselves on parallel easier-to-share licenses. Creative Commons-India project lead Shishir K. Jha, assistant professor at the IIT's Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, said that the project planned to focus on three specific areas in India. These are, centres of higher education like the seven IITs, regional IITs, managements and other institutions. He said: "These are increasingly taking recourse to creating video and web-based courses such as the NPTEL (National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning) and distance education courses such as C-DEEP (www.cdeep.iitb.ac.in) and eGURU (ekalavya.it.iitb.ac.in/eguruHome.do) (and all would benefit from keeping content sharable)." This festival is being held on January 26-27 and some big names are visiting India for the Creative Commons launch. Creative Commons chairman Joichi Ito and its global coordinator Dr. Catharina Maracke will join in. Two will be held on the topics 'Do We Need Remix?' and 'Sharing Is Creating'. Joichi Ito is a Japanese-born and American-educated businessman who runs the World of Warcraft guild of venture capitalists, and is general manager of international operations for such prominent web-based ventures like Technorati, chairman of Six Apart Japan, and board-member of ICANN Mozilla Foundation, the Open Source Initiative and others. This two-day event will see a mini-panel on "Creative Commons: Is India ready for flexible approach to copyrighting". is there any customer of pacenet from goregaon on this list there are heavy problems faced in this area from pacenet for the last 15 days & mr saiyad from pacenet says that 7 days have been credited to every user as compensation while TRAI regulations say that "Faults Pending for > 7 working days and < 15 working days: rebate equivalent to 15 days of minimum monthly charge or equivalent usage allowance" well the customers dont get perfect speeds the network is congested while DNS pings are normally above 130 ms on 64 bytes. I have a 72kbps line the speeds are mostly below 56.2 kbps on an average not more than 64 kbps

[OT] Root partition mouting read-only frequently

My partitioning is as follows: /dev/hda1 / /dev/hda5 /home /dev/hda6 swap /dev/hda7 /data All are ext3. The / partition is mounting read-only very frequently, in spite of clean shutdowns. As a result, the only apps I can use are Firefox and Thunderbird. Anything else (even those two if have to download something) requiring access to / (specially /tmp) doesn't work. For e.g., running "man" on any command gives "man: can't create a temporary filename: Read-only file system".
