If reports are accurate, networking has either been crippled or disabled entirely and they've stripped the OS down to such an extent, that only 3 programs can run concurrently. So, if you have a firewall and an antivirus running at all times, (and with Windows you do; you really do) then you simply _cannot_ multitask. If this is MS's much-touted response to Linux, they must *really* be hard up for ideas. Just my 2-pice. = v i s t a s p = bT Square Peg P.S. Calling it "Starter Edition" was a baaad move... Post Installation Probs about RH9.0

Dear Linux users, Absolutely NEW to Linux, I recently installed RH9.0 and the installation went very well. However, when I tried to play MP3 music or any other cd, it did not respond. Although the song files were displayed in the window, even double clicking didnt help. The tray also does NOT eject and the only way to get the stuck cd out is to REBOOT the pc. I also couldnt configure the Internet access wizard 4 dial-up access. If I wish access Internet thru Cable system how do I configure it coz our Cableman doesnt seem to know about it. Somaiya are available here Overview: The Free Software Foundation of India held a seminar cum workshop on GNU/Linux and the Free Software Paradigm (read SSP: Swatantra Software Paradigm) at KJ Somaiya College of IT, Sion, Mumbai. Dr. Nagarjun G., on behalf of the FSF introduced audience to the GNU Project and how to be a part of the Free Software Movement. * The Principal of KJSCIT introduced audience to speaker for this meet/workshop Dr. Nagarjun G. from Free Software Foundation. After Saraswati vandana, and a brief tea/coffee session, Nagarjun introduced audience to the GNU Project and Free Software Foundation India. He took us to the days of MIT hackers and explained the concept of Free Software at that time and brought us to this day where GNU Project is making a steady progress towards its HURD Kernel. A general question/answer session followed with Nagarjun answering questions pertaining to Free/Open Source and comparing various Unix flavors and windows systems. [after which everyone left for lunch :-) ] * After lunch, it was time for a demonstration of various Free Softwares that are giving a tough challenge to their proprietary counterparts. A hands-on demonstration of working around with GIMP 2.0 and Blender were presented. A sample movie created using Blender made everyone bite their nails. After which it was time to learn how to type/program at the speed of thought, using GNU Emacs. He demonstrated us how to create new macros in emacs so as to improve our speed and efficiency while typing/programming. (any vi fans there yet?) * Before starting a formal question/answer session, we went through the K Menu and saw what all applications are packed onto that single Knoppix 3.4 live CD. That brought us to a formal question/answer session followed by a demonstration of how to install Knoppix 3.4 on harddisk, hook on to internet, mount partitions and mess around with lilo. And another fun filled FSF Seminar came to an end with another round of tea/coffee and distribution of Knoppix 3.4 CDs and participation certificates. Hi, I have NEVER attended a seminar as good as this. Let me tell ya, i have been using Linux from 2 years, but this seminar cleared many of my most important doubts. Prof. Nagarjuna's speech was awesome ! Sitting in the front row, i had this very wonderful opportunity to grasp everything i could from this great person. I am so happy that i answered doubts of some of the people there. At the end when i looked at my watch, i was shocked to see that it was 5:30 pm. I was totally immersed in that event , and after a long time, i was unaware of the time. I cant explain how i felt but, it was a fantactic experience ; looking from a whole new paradigm ! squid problem
