What you can do to help the Konkani Wikipedia: * Translate articles of relevance to Goa, and to generally building the body of knowledge in Konkani. There are tonnes of copyright-free articles which you can translate into Konkani at http://en.wikipedia.org This is specially suited for people with linguistic and translation skills (whatever script). * Play around with the Wikipedia and see how it works. It's not complex. The starting point is to create a login for yourself. Then, everything follows. This is specially suited for tech people. But don't believe it's a complicated tech job! * Build awareness about the attempt to build the Konkani Wikipedia, and tell others about it. It will only work if there is enough "critical mass" and interest around it. * Above all, promote the language of your choice (any script!) using this tool of the 21st century. It's a powerful tool, so let's make use of it. There is PLENTY a list like this can do, being vibrant and full of aware people as well as people who lurk to learn. You can work with the cybercafe initiative (which is a brilliant and practical idea, and having watched it emerge from the discussions over the past couple of weeks, I really applaud the consensual method) to create a working distro that addresses the needs of tomorrow's computer users, unlike the bloatware that is increasingly irrelevant and inherently expensive to use, and that never succeeds in emerging productively from the morass of contraditictions that is the DRM world. You can work with each other (all of us) to create better installers, that deliver not just simpler install routines but also address the mix of h/w and peripherals in the real world. You can help put together a visual platform (qua Aqua) that will deliver designs that match anything that comes from the Mac world (the only competition, as far as this aspect is concerned, IMHO Vista is so far behind, you wonder - well, I wonder - whether they even know what visual delight means). And then there's work pending on a FOSS mobile interface to deliver the announced features of the iPhone for an Indian audience (localised, the works) - that will run on any Linux-enabled mobile box. In the legal playing field, the FOSS movement in India doesn't have the kind of groundswell 'critical mass' to pursue court battles against restrictive practices such as the unsigned pamphlet the Bombay Police put out for cybercafes. We need to identify the root causes of this apathy (ie, it is awareness? is it funding?) and address them in a structured manner. As we all know, there are many more restrictive practices in place that make it difficult for ordinary users to switch comfortably. We need to find a way of placing people in key organisations in the civil society movement (many of these organisations pay quite well, actually, and prefer persons who have an all-round approach to work, rather than tightly focused on, say, being a sysad 24/7). Such people will play a key role in bring such organisations directly into the FOSS movement. We also need to make visible persons who work in medium and large commercial organsations to come and talk - at LUG meets, for instance - on the use of FOSS in their operations. Just some food for thought. If some or all of these things begin to happen, you can be sure that the developers in the 'doze world will think twice about letting restrictive software out into the real world. I just saw Nagarjuna's post about being at HBSCE all of today, and must say, talk about communication gap, I didn't notice ANY post from anyone saying the venue would be available all day. Unless there is a firewall which is allowing outgoing DNS queries on port 53. Best way is to configure a caching DNS server on the proxy itself. And use that as the DNS server LAN wide. It would also speed up things a bit. Could someone tell me how to configure proxy setting in bash. I found some links that mention the http_proxy variable to be set, but over there the proxy is of the format http://proxy.abc.com:80 now the proxy i'm using dosn't have the http:// in the begining :( Anand

Mumbai cyber cafe license requirement makes Microsoft OS mandatory

Have just learnt that under the recently announced licensing scheme for the cyber cafes in Mumbai, the Mumbai police under its list of requirement vide point no 14 insists on a copy of Microsoft Open License. This license fee is apparently prohibitive and apparently still unclear on the licensing term for public use, and, restrains cyber cafe operators from choosing any other alternative operating systems. I would like to hear from others who have more details. Moreover customers do not appreciate going to a cyber cafe just to plug in their floppy or pendrive and have a virus remove all their precious data. Secondly a cyber cafe is a place people primarily for browsing the Web using a Web browser. I am not sure how many cyber cafe's have the necessary bandwidth to allow _all_ their users to _simultaneously_ engage in voice chat or video chat. Therefore a viable alternative is to earmark a few machines which are only going to be used only for browsing (and some text based IM) to be converted into GNU/Linux or *BSD or any other free operating system. Moreover it would be nice to have the cyber cafe association issue a press release expressing their preference towards free software wherever feasible. Localization Usability Workshop for Gujarati

Hi, Novell is working on a localization project for the GNOME desktop environment. We have done localization in 5 Indian Languages Bengali Hindi Gujarati Marathi Tamil We are planning Localization Usability workshop for Gujarati whereby we are inviting people to test the Gujarati localization and provide their feedback. We will compile this feedback and use it for improving the Gujarati localization status. The schedule and venue are mentioned below: Language: Gujarati Venue: Mumbai (Novell Office) Date: March 31, 2007 We are looking for 10 volunteers for this Usability Workshop. Volunteers should either be regulars user of desktop with a Gujarati interface or should be able to read, write and speak Gujarati well. I do not have a cyber cafe anywhere with 4km of where I have been living for the past 4 years. The only place that is mainly used for Internet and Web browsing is my institute's computer centre, where every machine runs Ubuntu. The centre has always been haunted by first year guys who do not have a computer of their own, and there has been no decrease in this trend. Not a single soul had to be trained to use Firefox on Ubuntu. Want some proof? Got my Triband working today :-)) . Did a little googling for rebooting the modem. Hello List, In the last week, I went through a few pages on gnu.org and found the link to GNU/Linux User Group, Bombay as http://www.ilug-bom.org.in which, as informed has expired, and also does not offer redirection. I sent an email to the webmaster change it to glug-bom.org and the same has been reflected now. I have a small suggestion for the home page, not sure whether it is really a great idea, but seems to be reasonably good to me. An image from the Picture Gallery could be in place of the meet's summary that would randomly change each time a user visits the website / refreshes the home page. Every month's meet summary could be put up at the same location for a few days (may be <=3 days). Reducing IT costs in Govt. Offices.

Hello All, The points raised by Kenneth got me thinking about this issue and came up with an idea for long term cost reduction in IT. Right now every Govt. office where the IT is implemented, has to be visited by experts who are aware of software installation as well as setup, in order to install as well as upgrade software. The offices also need sys-admins to manage admin level tasks. For an entire State, it can be a daunting task if new software packages are to be implemented over all its computers. So here is a concept that is a mix of advantages of all the current systems like Computer farms, Thin client, Network install and Raid5. There is a central server which is a very powerful machine. It is connected to various other smaller servers in different locations, via broadband or a private network and they in turn connect to other machines directly or again through sub-servers. The entire network is mapped properly. The central server is the only machine thats manually loaded with the full softwares. The other machines install themselves automatically in a cascading manner from top to bottom. The entire process is already mapped and programmed into the central server. As each of the sub-servers come up, they install the machines under them and so on. Since all the machines have their own HDDs, they run independent of their parent servers in case the servers break down. If any machine's HDD crashes, then it is simply replaced and it automatically updates itself over the network. The manpower used to maintain the systems need not be software savvy, only hardware guys. Every day when the user switches on the pc, it checks for updates/upgrades automatically through the network and is up to date without any manual effort. So only a small team of experts is actually sitting in the central server room installing software packages or upgrading them, whereas all the other systems get updated automatically down the line. A test lab is setup permanently in the central server premises where there is a small server-client network that works as a test system before the software is implemented on the central server. A hardware compatibility list can be sent to all departments so they purchase/replace hardware based on that list only. Once the setup is complete, it will be available to all vendors so in future they can create packages based on this structure only. The sys-admins too are few and centrally located in a call center and they do the necessary admin tasks on the systems.
