KDE Google Summer of Code

Hi folks, I am sure Google Summer of Code is nothing new to most of you people. So we have GSoC '07 even. And like previous years, even this year The KDE Project will be an mentor organisation. Some of you might have seen the dot[1] news. So I would really urge the students on the list who are familiar with C++ and Qt/KDE development to take part in SoC. So send in your proposals. Its a great way to learn new stuff and become a part of a FOSS project. Here are a few pointers [2] and [3]. Please note that [3] is a list of ideas that various mentors have put in. They are not the only ideas. You can come up with your own - say for your favourite KDE application - and recommend the same to the maintainer/author of that application. See what he/she says and work on the idea and put forth an proposal to google. If the mentors like your proposal and it gets selected nothing better than that. Go ahead and do some cool stuff. Now here's some simple points that I have realised from my last year's experience : While putting forth an proposal, don't be lazy and just cut/copy/paste what the mentor has already posted on [3]. Be original and explain what exactly you would like to do, how etc. Now if there are students on this list who think that they are not good in C++/Qt yet, especially the ones in 1st and 2nd year, fret not. You have an year or two to learn the same and work on it. And most importantly getting involved in FOSS - in this case Qt/KDE development doesnot need a SoC even. Just fix a bug or whatever - I am sure you know the drill or have heard it countless times. There is loads of source lying around, pick it up and get going. And trust me, your chances increase manifold if you already are an contributor. Because the mentors know that you can do stuff. Although that means nothing, last year I saw many students who were new and did an awesome job and some of them kept going on and are now actually contributing to various KDE projects. suggestions/improvements on script maintaining persistent net connection

Hello. I've put together a few commands in a Perl script that does two things: 1. Tries to maintain a steady net connection (using PPPoE) 2. Resumes a download if it was interrupted because of a break in the net connection. I am attaching the script here; any suggestions to make it more robust and generalized would be helpful. Hi ppl, We are developing an open source project for fun as well as a for learning. To give you a brief idea of our project - its a client server application installer on XML as the repository and python is used for parsing and searching for elements. You may find the details here : http://code.google.com/p/ulair Now, though I went through the working and parsing of XML in various Python ref material, but I just had a few queries like : 1) How does one get the exact value of an element down a tree like say : <abc><xyz><pqr>100</pqr></xyz></abc> So in the above case say the value 100, though it could be a string as well. We require the exact value, not its representation in XML or ASCII value as explained by you in some books. 2) Is there any efficient way of searching for elements in a huge XML tree in python ? 3) Is there any way in which one can change the tag names or incorporate new elements ? 4) We are thinking about using QT for creating our frontend, how does python integrate with it ? If you could suggest any other GUI Designer for python then it would be great. I know some of these questions are ignorant. However it would be a great help if you could give us some insight by answering them or pointing us to some other refrences. Hi AllI have a perl application which is actively being developed and managed by me since 2001.This application is used many shipping firms and I sell this software at very nominal one time cost. I provide free update / upgrade and support for this software. I am doing this to give back to the shipping community, which at one point helped me to stand back on my feets.I am currently working for a software firm and have to travel extensively in India and outside India and it become difficult for me to provide onsite / telephonic support. To resolve this problem I am thinking of making this a webbased application.Here I need help on following queriesa) Can anybody guide me with reliable gnu/linux based web hosting service provider who can support     perl / php / ruby / python and template engine like Catalyst / Smarty / Ruby on Rail / Cheetah.     With DB like postgresql. The startup scrip for Limewire couldn't handle this location. Hence this patch. Slackware with ubuntu

Hi all, Has anyone tried out Slackware with ubuntu on the same machine? I read that Slack uses lilo while I use grub with ubuntu now. Can a Slack installation coexist with this setup? googling suggests that skipping the lilo installation and then fixing up with grub will do it. I think I would have to use knoppix see what exact files it has put in /boot to figure out the right entries for kernel and initrd (if any). Is this right? lost trash folder in kde

hello, i, by mistake, deleted the trash folder in kde, residing in ~/Desktop/Trash. Although i have recreated the "folder", it does *not* act like the trash folder is supposed to -- deleted stuff doesn't end up there. i tried searching for "trash path" in the "control center", but in vain. googling around provided the path variable to reside in "control center -> system administration -> paths", but unfortunately in my case i can't find the "trash path" variable :( -- warm regards, Pradnyesh Sawant -- Man thrives, oddly enough, only in the presence of a challenging environment. --Anon

Wireless Linux Download --> Installation Stage

Hello all, This is with reference to the wireless linux download idea that I had posted a month ago. Just to refresh your memories, it consists of a stand alone repo server that is linked to a WAP. So anyone and everyone who want to download CD/DVD ISOs can visit the location with their wireless enabled laptops and locally download the required isos. We can also keep some LAN cables for older lappys. Recently I bought a secondhand pc, an HP, AMD K6 450 MHz. with 128 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, CD ROM. It also came with a colour printer that was serviced today. It only needs new cartriges now. I am keeping the printer for personal use and it will be used to print the linux brochures. A few at a time as per the need. The pc box will be used for the WLD idea and I want to install it in any institution which is willing to run it for 24 hours. The HDD was cleaned and installed with the Debian Etch base package CD that I had downloaded last month. So now Debian is up in command line. Net is up too. Apt is giving some trouble as I did not use the mirrors during installation. I tried various entires in the sources.list but it hangs midway and then throws errors. It should be resolved with the blessings of the experts. There are 4 primary partitions created in the box as follows:- 100 MB /boot 3 GB / 36 GB /var (for the web pages) 2 GB swap Now the actual installation and setup stage begins and I would like to know if anyone is interested in setting up the system. I feel that a one or two day session in any place would be ideal where we meet as a group and finish it up. We document the procedure to help others do the same. Right now I don't have the budget to buy a wireless AP but I/we can pool in later or use a secondhand one. Right now we can test the same with a LAN cable and a laptop. I will bring the box with kb and mouse to the venue. NTFS Screwup in Etch.

Hello All, I wanted to try out this month's Chip DVD which showed a blank disk in Etch. It has Kubuntu 6.10. So I rebooted to try out the same dvd in windows. However I missed the boot-loader and it booted back into Debian. While it was in progress, I gave the 3 finder salute and the pc rebooted decently and this time I selected xp. However it would not load beyond the account login part. I attached a spare hdd and booted into debian and backed up my entire disk for safety. Then using the xp recovery console I gave the command 'chkdsk c: /p' and now I am able to boot into the admin account only and that too slowly. Many features have got disabled. In short, I got to reload windows for the first time ever since I got the system 5 years ago with all its umpteen updates having to be reloaded again. :P My fstab has ntfs as the file system for the win partition. Now I have added a hash to that line to prevent the partition from being mounted in Linux. This is a caution to all those using Debian Etch with an NTFS partition in the pc. Please don't keep the ntfs partition permanently mounted via /etc/fstab. From other problems too, Debian Etch is far from 'Testing' or almost stable. UFB-15 Protocol ( Proposed by Rony )

Hello All, This is a new protocol proposed for the purpose of facilitating fast Linux CD/DVD ISO downloads through the DTH type satellite medium. A Linux satellite having a footprint over Asia and Africa will help in providing the latest Linux distributions to even the remotest areas of these regions. The broadcasts will be sequential and timed for every .iso file, just like regular television programmes with their respective timings. The number of transponders, frequency etc. is not discussed here. The main purpose of this writeup is to create a transmission protocol for error free unidirectional file downloads via satellite. A single broadcast should be received by un-limited number of receivers anywhere in Asia and Africa. As satellite transmission is prone to disturbances, any error in the ISO file being downloaded will render the entire process useless. Since it is going to be a unidirectional broadcast that cannot receive feedback from the receiving units, certain correction features need to be added to the broadcast. The proposed protocol will be called Unidirectional File Broadcast ( UFB-15 ) Protocol. The number 15 denotes the 15 second delay feature added for correction. This can vary from 1 second to 60 seconds or more as per the users' choice. The UFBP-15 will broadcast data packets in groups of 1 second each. These packets will contain their parity check sequence interlaced to check downloaded packet integrity. After the first 15 packet groups of one second each are broadcast, the next one second will contain the first packet group re-broadcast. The next second will have the 16th packet group. The next one to follow will be the 2nd packet group re-broadcast. So every second a new packet group and its 15 second earlier packet group is alternately broadcast. This provides the receiver a 15 second delay to re-load the packets if they got corrupted in the first attempt. An illustration is placed below. 'P' denotes the packet group per second and its timing sequence. They are broadcast every second. P1 --> P15 --> P1 --> P16 --> P2 --> P17 --> P3 --> P18 --> P4 --> P19 --> P5 --> P20 --> P6 --> P21 --> P7 --> P22 --> P8 --> P23 --> P9 --> P24 --> P10 --> P25 --> P11 --> P26 --> P12 --> P27 --> P13 --> P28 --> P14 --> P29 --> P15 --> P30 As you can see, after every 15 seconds a re-broadcast of old packets takes place to help the receiver catch up with broken packets. The delay time can be chosen after experimenting with different time delays. This will reduce the bandwidth by half but offer a self correction for unidirectional broadcasts. To increase bandwidth, a higher transmission frequency can be chosen. The proposed UFB-15 Protocol is free to anyone to modify and correct for better transmission quality. The only condition is that it should be released under the GPL license so that anyone can make use of it freely. Another method of reducing reception errors is to avoid transmitting an ISO file as a whole. Instead, it can be transmitted as a set of files just as they exist on the CD/DVD. Individual files being smaller, can be corrected easily and will not disturb the entire ISO file block. hello all, I need to know how I can configure vsftp or proftp (kindly suggest which one is more stable ). I have the following needs. 1. user should be able to log into his home directory by default. 2. I don't want to chroot jail the user in his home directory . I have shared /var/www for use by public and thus I need to allow user to change directory to such shared folders. regarding printing, I will like to know if I can share the printer on another machine running linux? both the sharing and accessing machines are linux based. I tried doing it but while the printer is working fine on linux, I can't share the same with other linux machines in the network? I have dhcp on all machines so there is no static ip, is that the problem? I am running fedora core 6 on all desktop machines. so can some one guide me please? Krishnakant.

Linux Download Satellite?

Hello All, I was comparing rates for broadband internet for downloading linux distro isos and find that over a period of one year, the rates are still high, compared to the number of cds/dvds that can be downloaded. For example a 600/- per month NU plan becomes 7200/- per year. How many CDs or DVDs would a person actually download in one year for 7200/-? Plus, many places in India, Asia as well as Africa are still undeveloped and broadband is not available. The World Space satellite radio is a technology that was meant to spread radio to the whole of Asia and Africa. The receivers now start at a Rs. 1500/- one time investment. So can the world Linux community come together and launch its own satellite with multiple channels, each channel representing a linux brand, like Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Gentoo etc. The downloads will be in the form of serial broadcasts in the form of a programme schedule. A timer in the receiver records the ISO download at that time. A mini HDD inside the receiver can record the data. This helps those who don't have facilities to mount antennas or don't face the satt. They can take the receiver and antenna outside, download and then come back in to transfer it to their pcs. At high one way speeds, downloads should be very fast. The entire service should be free of cost to download. How much would such a satellite cost and which country has the minimum taxes for such a launch? The entire linux community could contribute for this, along with donations from big distro companies and some Govts. It should last us for 15 years. Hello all, I'm currently following my CCNA (Cisco certified network associate) course. I'm almost done with it. I want to support my networking course with some programming skills. Where to start from ?? I have been to NIIT & already checked with them about language course, they said "C" & "C++" will be covered in a period of 2 months. I personally do not feel that 2-months time is sufficient for those two languages. Also, i keep reading about 'RUBY' & 'Python' and i gather that RUBY is much easy to learn for beginner like me. So, any experts out there can please point me to any institute which offers courses in RUBY / Python ? Is there any pre-requisite for learning those languages (like familiarity with syntax of "C" or any other language for that matter) ?? Adding signatures at the end of mail messages

I have a requirement of adding different images or signatures in every outgoing mail from the MTA. We are setting up a mail infrastructure in our office and haven't yet chosen any MTA. Does anybody have any experience in this situation and will any MTA allow writing a custom plug-in which attaches different signatures with different mails. All ideas are welcome. I felt that this mail is not off topic for any of the mailing lists I have posted it to, and it is about time we had a technical, as opposed to sentimental or loyalty based look at the .deb and .rpm file formats, I have read the acceptable use policies of all three lists, and I think this is not in violation of any of them. I apologize if I am mistaken] It might be instructive to compare package file formats on a purely technical level: http://kitenet.net/~joey/pkg-comp/ This is a fairly authoritative document, and well worth understanding. Here follows commentary on the major points of difference oj just the rpm and deb format (please read the URL for details regarding other package formats). 1) Data unpack-able by standard tools, meta-data accessible by standard tools, and ability to create a .deb with standard (non distribution specific) tools: .debs are just ar archives of tar-balls, and can be unpackaged, inspected, and created using cp, chmod, ar and tar. rpm's need a special tool. Now, why is this important at all? Well, think of a classified environment, where you do not want to rely on the packaged tool to help you with forensics; but you have a trusted solaris box. 2) Package relationships: The .deb format has a more nuanced set of relationships, incorporating recommendations and suggested packages, and orders packages by priority as well as group. rpm does not have the nuanced relationship, nor priority, but it does have file based dependencies, and easily extract-able copyright information so it is easier to marshal packages by copyright info. Personally, I am of the opinion that file dependencies are a mixed bag; they complicate the package dependency graph with edges that are different from a package dependency; added to the less nuanced dependency and priority information, they make the installation ordering of rpm's far less sophisticated. dpkg goes through a song and dance ordering packages with topological sorting of the graph, breaking installation into chunks to ensure that no conflicting packages ever are unpacked at the same time, unpacking and configuring packages in dependency order, and rolling back failed installation. rpm does installations on a best effort basis, and thus failures at critical stages leave the system in an untenable state. 3) rpm can mark documentation files (makes it easier to find docs), and has ghost files, files which are not shipped in the package but are registered as being owned by the package. For documentation, Debian relies on convention; all package documentation is found in /usr/share/doc/$package; but ghost files are clearly a plus for rpms. 4) Debian packages may run binaries at install and un-install times. I am not sure if this is a major plus. 5) Package verification and triggers -- rpm has them, and package verification is one of the major features missing in a .deb. triggers, well, there is a technical proposal currently being debated about adding triggers to dpkg, but obviously, Debian is playing catch-up here. 6) New sections in the package format: .debs were designed to be extensible, and whole new sections can be added to the package by adding yet another tar-ball or the ar archive. Some of the future additions being planned are detached signatures by various keys; developers key, build daemon maintainer key, archive maintainers key, release manager key, mirror master key, -- in a new section of the package file. So, new data sections, compiled binaries for more than one sub-arch, or 32 and 64 bit binaries -- they can be added easily to a new section, and dpkg be told how to deal with the new sections by inspecting the .deb format version. rpm's can't as easily cope with unseen new requirements. manoj -- "Nuclear war can ruin your whole compile." Debian Etch Installation Report

Evolution mail client configuration help

Hi list, I'm just trying out evolution as my new mail client. The problem is that I cant find a option to wrap the lines at 72 characters i.e. I cant set the wrapping! There is no option to set the wrapping size anywhere! Anybody using evolution?? How do I configure the client? Thanks. -- Regards, Dinesh A. Joshi

RHEL 4 - Cannot ping.

Hi. I cannot ping any system and no system can ping me on my RHEL 4 AS. SElinux is disabled. No iptables rules are specified. Default installation. hosts.allow, deny are blank. System is HP-Compaq V50000 notebook. ifconfig shows my eth0 properly configured. mii-tool shows link ok. Haven't seen anything like this before. Any pointers ? Regards, NMK.

problem in integrating ejabberd with mysql
