Rajesh Jain at Oct 17th GLUG meet

Rajesh Jain of Netcore Solutions will be the main speaker at the next GLUG meet to be held on October 17th, 2004 at KReSIT at IIT Bombay at 3PM. Rajesh Jain is a technology visionary who started Indiaworld, one of the first portals in India before the Internet was a familar name in India. The sale of Indiaworld to Satyam in 1999 for Rs 500 crore sparked off the startup/venture capital boom in India. Post-Indiaworld, Jain has set up Netcore, an enterprise solutions company, focused on messaging, collaboration and security software, based on Free/Open Source Software. (www.netcore.co.in). He is a prolific writer and maintains a blog at www.emergic.org that's widely read. Jain will be followed by a talk on Resty by Mitul Limbani. (Mitul, you are in august company :-) See you all there! Running several applications on Linux

Hi all, I have Fedora Core 2 on one P4 comp, single processor with 2 GB RAM. I want to know whether I can run several java applications on the same comp. Like 7 java web applications, some of them are using Resin and others Tomcat as Webserver. Will I need VMWare on Linux for this purpose? I dont want to use VMWare because , it hogs memory. Any alternatives please? Thanks Ramachandra

/etc/passwd

I have not yet found the answer to this question, hence asking it here. The /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files have read-only permissions for users (/etc/shadow is read-only for root too!). Still using the passwd command users are able to change their passwords (which means changing the corresponding entries in /etc/shadow). I understand that both these files are not accessed directly by the commands but by some API's (google gives this much info !!)... so as far as I understand, the API must be running with SU perms.... but still users are able to change only their own passwds (and not others)... can someone explain exactly what goes on.....? maybe shed some more light on this... :) Thanks in anticipation, Priyam. -=-=- ...
