Hi all: I'd like a copy of each of the CDs listed at the SFD site. I intend to distribute these in Nashik. I'll be available in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon-evening, and on Wednesday morning. [ILUG-BOM] software freedom day : Should we have our plan of action

Afternoon All, August 28 has been designated as "Software Freedom Day". With the GLUG in mumbai having a significant presence it would make sence for us to draft a plan of action laying out the activities of the day. http://softwarefreedomday.org/index.html Please check the link above for more information. > We could distribute pamphlets talking about Software Freedom at various prominent locations across the city. > We could retail badges/stickers/banners supporting the FLOSS movement and providing information about the same. > Various software companies have their offices/development centres in mumbai. We have our volunteers at these outlets disseminating information pertaining to the FLOSS movement. > A 2-3 hour workshop can be conducted at some place in the city focussing on the importance and role played by "Software Freedom" which would be open to one and all. We can invite some distiguished speakers to preside and share their view points on the same. We have little time at our disposal. This event we can celebrate and we will need some funds with respect to carrying out the activities as listed. Please come forward with your criticism/suggestions with respect to the same. Towards meeting expenses with respect to the same in case we decide to celebrate "Software Freedom Day" i suggest the formation of a trust to be taken care by a treasurer nominated unanimously by GLUG-BOM. A donation of 1000/- toware the same is a sum assured on my behalf. How is this different? 1.6 Is this copyleft against the law? 1.7 What other licenses exist to protect free software? 1.8 Okay, so I can see that free software is legal but surely if I duplicate something that means that someone is losing out somewhere along the way? 1.9 This freedom with software programs is interesting. Can this be extended to other forms of information like books? 2 History of Free Software 2.1 When did this whole free software thing start? 2.2 Okay, but now what is Linux? When did that come about? 3 Production Methodology 3.1 How is Free Software actually made? 3.2 Okay, how is software made then? 3.3 So now that I understand how software is made, how is free software made ? 3.4 So how is this different from the production of other kinds of software? 3.5 What kinds of people make free software? 3.6 But I still don't understand why anyone would want to give away their work for free? What's in it for them!? 3.7 What do you mean by a Digital Commons? 3.8 In what ways could I benefit from involving myself in this Digital Commons? 4 Arguments for using Free Software 4.1 I'm still not convinced. Surely a big computer company knows best when it comes to designing software? Why would I want to use software designed by an amateur? 4.2 But what about bugs? Surely free software is more likely to be virus prone? 4.3 Since the source code is available, won't it be easy for someone to find out a security loop hole and exploit it? 4.4 So you're saying that free software actually evolves at a faster pace than proprietary software? 4.5 Free software is only something used by computer enthusiasts, right? 4.6 Have any established organizations actually used free software to their advantage? 5 Personal Relationship to Free Software 5.1 What kinds of problems might I expect to encounter using free software? 5.2 Okay, but why would I want to modify my software anyway? 5.3 Look, I'm no computer whiz! Isn't it easier for me to just use packaged software? Who do I turn to when something goes wrong? 5.4 But how do I know I can trust someone not linked to a big company that has a reputation to uphold? 5.5 Okay, so how would I begin to install free software on my machine? 5.6 Which GNU/Linux distribution should I use?" Post Installation Probs about RH9.0

Dear Linux users, Absolutely NEW to Linux, I recently installed RH9.0 and the installation went very well. However, when I tried to play MP3 music or any other cd, it did not respond. Although the song files were displayed in the window, even double clicking didnt help. The tray also does NOT eject and the only way to get the stuck cd out is to REBOOT the pc. I also couldnt configure the Internet access wizard 4 dial-up access. If I wish access Internet thru Cable system how do I configure it coz our Cableman doesnt seem to know about it.
