Since we clearly have two catagories of people regardign their opinion about being newbie friendly, why dont we have two seprate lists. 1. the newbie lists - the person who joins this list is expected to be tolerant enuff to entertain all types of stupid sounding questions form newbies. this shall be a lil less strict. 2. the general list - this list is used as a regular collaboration medium for the gnu/linux community in and around bombay. If you own the box, then hacking it cannot be illegal. If you don't own it, then it definitely is. BTW, is there any idea what is the validity of the GPL in India. As far as I know, it is based on the US copyright law. I am not sure if that applies to us. Mono VGA Monitor under Linux

We are shifting out of Windows to Linux using Red Hat Linux (7.3) and Ethernet Cards that boot off the server We have many (old) Mono VGA monitors (Make: Samtel / Microtek) Under Windows 98 we get a full screen display by setting the following paramters in display settings a) 640 x 480 b) 60 Hz c) 256 Colours Under Linux with those same settings we get a screen that leaves an empty area on the top and bottom i.e. screen display is not full screen. If we use a colour monitor all is ok i.e. we get full display Can we do the some settings (software / hardware / cable) to get fullscreen under Linux with a Mono VGA monitor -- basically we want to hold down the cost of the switch from Windows to Linux without investing in colour monitors Regards Ajit Gulanikar

Sept 12th LUG meet

At the August 8th LUG meet it was decided that the organizing committee for the September LUG meet will of Nirav Mehta, Narayan Kejariwal and myself. This meet will be held at IIT Bombay, Powai. The three of us are coordinating amongst ourselves and our plan is to get one well known speaker from industry, and one expert in legal issues to speak on GPL and patenting issues. If there are any recommendations for either of these, please let us know. For the October 10th LUG meet, Mitul has volunteered to organize the meet. Incidentally, Michael Tiemann, Vice President, Open Source Affairs, Red Hat Inc will be in India in the second week of October. He is an excellent speaker and it would be good to have him address the LUG meet. The only problem is that he is coming during the week and our LUG meets are always held on Sundays. Perhaps these can be two seperae events. Red Hat is willing to host his talk. Perhaps the October LUG meet organizing team can suggest what can be done? Mitul? qmail clustering query

Hi Guys I m planning to build up a Qmail cluster based on RedHat advanced server 3.0 FOr the shared stoarge quorum requirement of RedHat , i m planing to have a small Compaq/HP shared JBOD box of about 100GB However for the maildir storage , i m planning to have it exported out of an NFS (exported by some NAS ) | Qmail-1| | Qmail-1| --------- --------- | | | | SHARED STORAGE (100 GB) ----------- |NAS Server| (2 TB) ----------- The 2 servers wil mount their respective /home/maildir out of the same NAS export. The idea is that if any of the server goes down the other will take up and be able to serve all the users. Clustering is thru the use of Redhat Advanced server cluster .. not through HeartBeat or the likes Google tells me that maildir is **absolutely safe ** on NFS ...
