Kubuntu 8.10 on LG X110 [Installation Report]

Hello, Today Kubuntu 8.10 was installed on the LG X110 netbook. Unlike Acer which has no recovery CD and uses a 20 GB hidden partition, LG's X110 comes with driver CDs and there is only one partition of 160 GB that's installed with Doze XP home. A Moserbayer DVD writer temporarily plugged into an external USB IDE HDD adapter was used as the external USB CD drive. After booting flawlessly into the Live session of Kubuntu 8.10, installation is pretty simple. When you come to the partitioning part, it stops at the first option to partition the disk 50-50 for Doze and Linux. Select your option and the rest of the installation is automatic. If you choose 50-50 then the first time you boot into Dose post installation, you will get a file system error and the scandisk option will pop up. Do not bypass it. Let it happen and it will restart the system after correcting the disk space entries. After that the system boots into doze normally. After installation run 'sudo apt-get update' and install multimedia support with 'sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras'. It is better to run this command in a terminal or gui terminal like konsole as the Java license agreement choices cannot be navigated properly through a GUI package manager like Adept, Synaptec etc. It will hang there. To add firefox3, simply use 'sudo apt-get install firefox'. Please note that Firefox 3 is a gnome package and it will download a bulk of gnome based support packages. For the webcam interface use 'sudo apt-get install luvcview' Luvcview is a nice software but the gui needs a little getting used to. Pictures clicked are good and in a raw format. You can later convert them into your favorite format. It does video recording too. While the Realtek LAN is up automatically, the Realtek wireless drivers need to be installed and that is done from this site http://julienpecqueur.com/tutoriaux/install_driverwifi.html The site is in French but the commands to be executed are in English so simply copy/paste them into a terminal. Remember, the 'uname -r' is to be replaced by the actual output of 'uname'r'. So do that first and make a note of it. Download the tarball and untar it using 'tar xzvf rtl8187se_linux_26.1023.0928.2008.tar.gz' then go ahead with the rest of the instructions. Basically you download the builder packages and build the drivers from the tarball. Then you save the modules into the respective locations. Bluetooth is still a gray area and hopefully it will get resolved soon. What is surprising is that peripherials like BT, Camera, Cardreader etc. do not show up in lspci. I will see if the output can be posted to the list. Maybe there is a patch in the Doze side to get these devices detected. Anyway the system is now up and running with Kubuntu 8.10 with LAN and Wireless support and Camera. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! No Viruses No Spyware Only Freedom.

When I said my comp crashed I meant that when I "hit the button" all that happened was that the power led glowed - no display and no led even for the hard disk. However, it turned out that is was more my hopes that had crashed. The BIOS had got corrupted and a call to Acer helpline fixed that. The comp is up and about again. BTW +1 from me. Sanjay

connecting to gmail via imap over squid

Hi All, I'm using squid3.0 as our proxy server to serve the internet users, which is working fine. Now I want users to access IMAP(say gmail on imap) over my proxy. Can anyone let me know, How do I do this? Is there any way I can do it with squid? Is there any other way? So far what I've read on google is, as squid is an http proxy, it only supports http/ftp protocol. not fully for even https. Hello, This is just for everyones' information that more manufacturers have jumped into the netbook bandwagon and one such model is from LG. A client of mine bought it from Vijay Sales for 19K. Specs:- LG X110 10" screen 1.2 Kgs 2.5+ Hr batter life Atom Processor 945 Mobo 1 GB RAM 160 GB HDD 1.3 MP camera 3 USB 1 VGA LAN and Wireless (lspci showed them as Realtek devices and the wireless was not detected by Lenny Live) Bluetooth One MM card slot Speakers. Mic and H/P sockets Preloaded with doze home edition I found the screen to very bright but the camera was darkish, compared to the Aspire One. Dear All, I finally found this piece of information at the http://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne site. It says : Note Kernel 2.6.27-11 breaks the wired ethernet interface. Bug 313866 has been verified: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/313866 Add to the information to help. Revert to an earlier kernel to fix the wired interface for now. However, I managed to crash my laptop while trying out various ways to fix the problem. I am told by the Acer people that it is probably only a corruption of the BIOS and will have to start from putting in a new BIOS. But when I have my Kubuntu intrepid up, I will remember to revert to an earlier version of the kernel. Hope this helps others who have the Acer Aspire One. Regards, Sanjay Singhvi

Hello all, I intended to hold a demonstration and installfest of Ubuntu a few months ago,which didn't work out because the projector was unavailable.I plan to do the fest again,this time successfully, on 27th and 28th Feb,with the demo on 27th and installfest on 28th respectively.My (more) fleshed out plan follows,please tell me what you think of it. :) Demonstration: On 27th,I plan to set up 4-5 machines with Ubuntu 8.04[LTS] installed with eye candy and requisite non-free codecs and to attract people with compiz effects and natural curiosity and explain to them the various replacements for applications they use on Windows(TM).As Mehul has helpfully provided,we need to show them reasons to switch,which will be parallels for the applications they use on Windows(TM) Explain the features vis-a-vis Windows,career possibilities and use of GNU/Linux in universities and companies abroad.We organize an install fest next day for those interested. Installfest: I have 28 odd Ubuntu 8.04 32 bit CDs.I plan to install for those who bring their boxes and hand them a CD.If people can't bring their machines,ask them to check out the installation procedure,and hand out CDs. Also,planning to provide Fedora 10 installs for those who wish to try out a different distro. If I run out of CDs,I ask them [previous day]to bring their flash stick and create a bootable image on them,provided their boxes have USB boot capabilities.Also planning to keep a CD Writer handy. Where I need help in this plan is to arrange for the machines for the first day.I have presently arranged for 3 desktop machines,but a wide range of hardware is preferable. Hence,if anyone can get along laptops pre-installed with Linux or Sun VM machine, that'll be of help to me during the demonstration,because I would be sure all the hardware works with Linux(or at least know which hardware to skirt) and there will be no "Eh,this thing should have been working" moments.Ideally,I plan to have a range of specifications from low power to highly powered rigs. I also need experienced people to lend their expertise in framing how to speak to people who drop in to check out the machines on the first day. Therefore I invite willing members of ILUG-Bom to speak about GNU/Linux to people who are interested in finding out more after experiencing the Operating System. Alternate broadband dialers illegal?

Hi, I had written a broadband dialer for sify (antidialer) some time back. during this time, sify decided to change its dialer protocol for unknown reasons and include some cryptography** in it. I wanted to know if it would be legal to reverse engineer the dialer (not necessarily disassemble it) or wireshark packets to analyze and try to write an alternate dialer for the new protocol. I'm asking this for the following reasons: 1) I am not using the dialer for unauthorized access -- it is simply an alternative means to login using a valid account. I have to do it because the linux dialer crashes before or after I login and the customer care has not been responsive to my complaints so far. 2) There is no EULA for which I have to click through when I use the Linux based dialer, so reverse engineering it should not be illegal right? 3) Someone had mentioned once on a forum (indiabroadband.com or something like that) a while back that it is illegal to "break" cryptography. If it is legal then I could go around attempting to understand and implement what the protocol does. **It's really some silly xor/reverse with MD5s from what I could understand so far. -- Siddhesh Poyarekar http://siddhesh.in

I agree with the list member[s] who say[s] newbies should be treated respectfully. when i was a [greater] newbie, i had a bad experience on this list, a member was extremely rude to me. so i kept both myself and my suggestions away from the lug-meet that i had written to enquire about. i guess that is what that member wanted, anyway-- someone new is always threatening to the coterie. re the thread discussion about silly questions: lots of people, esp. from our cultural/educational atmosphere *cannot* absorb knowledge except through a conversation. they simply cannot parse the written word, esp in English-- there is a mental block, otherwise lack of confidence, or simply the necessity to think with the left brain that makes them manual-averse. here, the person is not someone necessarily lazy, stupid or mentally challenged. Static IP Setup.

Hello I use MTNL Triband connection, recently I applied for static IP and got one (59.185.196.123 [ just example ] ), does any one know how to set this ip static on my ADSL Router (iball 54M Wireless ADSL2+ Router, Model No.: iB-WR6111A) I also want to setup NAT on the Router to access my LAN from outside. this Router is capable but I tried many but not yet succeded. MTNL call center help was of no use, those guys just know basic dynamic setup. Hi, there's this section 43 of the Indian IT Act, 2000, which says in subsection b, that [any person who, *without the owner's permission*] ==quote== (b) downloads, copies or extracts any data, computer data base or information from such computer, computer system or computer network including information or data held or stored in any removable storage medium; ==end quote== [could stand to be fined to the tune of up to a crore rupees]. this is sufficiently vague for the authorities to screw people who have not been permitted by sify to work with their cryptography. of course, the law doesn't apply if your name is raju ;) best suhit kelkar.

List has been really old and there are several members who might have subscribed and forgotten or lost interest. We are seeing huge number of unwanted emails The list is for serious people who want to help and want to be helped ( thats the objective, pls dont debate the current state ) Can we have all list members confirm their membership once again so that people who are not serious and do not reply in X number of days can unsubscribed with due notification / reminder whatever process ? Because here we are not looking for number of members we are looking for quality. Also for members who willingly / accidentally spam the list with invites should be removed from the list and if they are serious about being around can join back with an explanation instead of going into a loop and eventually fighting Also it will be appreciated if the list owners will redistribute the list guidelines for the benefit of fellow members and include relevant suggestions from other members. These are only my suggestion. I encourage list admins to think about them and members to reply simple Vote + 1 / - 1 or list admins to setup a poll. Hello, Here are a few suggestions that will hopefully help members of this list enjoy their stay here and avoid the flame wars that keep flaring up and take up precious bandwidth. Just like a doze machine that has its resources eaten up by viruses, spam, spyware and bloatware, we could all contribute towards reducing flame wars and promote better relations among members. Here are some guide lines we could all follow. 1. We are all guests on this list, which means we have to abide by the host's (list's) rules and regulations. It includes abiding by the rules of moderation which is necessary for any public list. Without moderation there is chaos. 2. We have not created this list but have joined it for the purpose of being in touch with other GNU/Linux users of Mumbai. Our rights and privileges on this list are limited and not absolute. 3. If we had created this list then members would have the freedom to leave it whenever they found our messages insulting or personally attacking. However since this list is created by others and we are only guests here, it can be a very difficult and embarrassing situation for one guest to find that he/she is being attacked by another guest. 4. This is a public list with the scope of discussions limited to Open Source / Free Software, Software Freedom and occasionally technology related matters off topic, there is absolutely NO scope for discussions on social or political issues unless they are directly related to incidents of use or restriction of use of Free Software in rare cases. 5. National Coalition for promotion of FOSS - meeting on 22.02.2009

Dear All, Many of us have been advocating for several years the adoption of FOSS applications and platforms and FOSS related advocacy has been gathering momentum. Last year, we had an advocacy processes relating to software patents and the OOXML debate, we had RMS and Eben Moglen visiting various places in India sharing their views on FOSS. Yet, we do have a long way to go before FOSS is widely used in India. Bringing different groups of actors (who believe in the principles of Free Software), including academic institutions, NGOs and CBOs, research and advocacy groups, professional associations, FOSS enterprises providing services in different areas as development, training, support and maintenance, we believe will help in supporting and cohering a positive discourse in favour of FOSS. Some of us have been thinking that a loose national coalition of such individuals/ organizations and associations should be formed that will work towards the widespread adoption and promotion of FOSS. Such a network of organizations working along a broad consensus on promoting FOSS will provide stronger and more effective responses to events relating to FOSS as well as initiate proactive actions than perhaps individuals or institutions acting in isolation. We are writing to you all, to suggest a meeting to discuss this idea of the coalition and thereafter also items for immediate action. We would request you to join for a half-day meeting, on Sunday, the 22nd of February to discuss the same. Time : 3pm - 6pm Venue : CIS office, Cunningham road, Bangalore, landmark - same building as Wockhardt hospital Map : [1]http://tinyurl.com/apltcb Present below is the proposed agenda for the meeting - a. Formation of a national coalition of organisations advocating for FOSS. The goals, scope, priorities, approaches, structures, issues / risks, alternatives, resources for such a coalition etc, name of the coalition will be discussed. Some proposed activities which can be discussed - b. Working with government departments and public sector units advocating them to adopt and promote FOSS When we individually speak to any of our contacts/departments in the government the impact may not be significant. However, if we send collective representations to departments such as the e-Governance, IT, Education, RDPR departments, and seek meetings to explain the issue and the advantages of FOSS, it would gradually help them to look at the issue in depth. c. FOSS initiatives in the country, including the Gujarat ICT in schools program Many state governments across India are in different stages of adoptiong FOSS (many on the extreme of not using FOSS!) and we can share our understanding and views on the current situation. The Gujarat government for instance is implementing a 500 crore ICT in school education program. They are inclined to go towards FOSS, however the final decision has not been taken yet. We need to look at ways so that they consider FOSS seriously. There are also plans for a FOSS workshop in Delhi, where different groups, including political parties and government officials could be invited and disuss the advantages of adopting and promoting FOSS. d. FOSS initiatives in Karnataka There are some initiatives in Karnataka for which we can work together to help in the adoption of FOSS. We have an informal request for a proposal for a pilot project to train government staff and vendor staff in Bangalore on GNU/Linux platform that has been chosen for the ICT in schools program. We also need to work on the issue of using Nudi on FOSS. A big impediment currently to getting the government to use FOSS is be that 'Nudi' works only on MS Windows and does not work on FOSS distributions. Lastly we should explore what could be done to help VTU adopt FOSS and prefer it over proprietary technologies. Engineering colleges adopting FOSS will make a huge impact on the creation of the FOSS ecosystem in the state. We can also discuss other means and methods which we can collectively work on to promote FOSS. I was once kicked from a channel by a guy who did it just to show me that he had been granted ops on the channel! If you moderate non-newbies, they will most probably leave the list and never rejoin. And the community will be the loser. In this case, the discussion is highly relevant as it gives a clear pointer as to why so few women appear on community mailing lists. This is a problem that worries a lot of us. I personally was horrified at the sexist way a woman respected in the community was addressed as 'my dear'. And am appreciative of the fact that she is holding her own. Please do not bring up things like 'moderation' and threats to ban people who are non-spammers. Rely on peer pressure. That is the way a community grows. Check the mailing lists around the country - the more heavily moderated a list is, the faster it dies down. For the past few years both Chennai and Mumbai lists have been very free with the admins keeping a very low profile. DWG Viewer in Linux?

Hello, A client of mine only needs to read DWG files and print them. Currently he uses the free DWG viewer from Autodesk in doze. I want to migrate him to Linux. On the net there are hardly any proper viewers that I could find. There is an lx-viewer but it uses openDWG libraries that are available only to members of the openDGW group companies. Hello list, There has been interest shown by a few students in VJTI College, Matunga, Mumbai to hold sessions on FOSS/GNU/Linux(take you pick). As per my discussion with the ACE(Association of Computer Enthusiasts) society, they have free time on Wednesdays after 2 p.m. when they would be interested to attend sessions interesting them. We could make use of this opportunity to spread awareness of FOSS and the community amongst the students. The biggest stumbling block is the time - 2 p.m. on Wednesday, which is work hours for most. If someone has the free time and inclination, they could take up the topic of their interest and hold a session. ACE has been able to obtain permission to hold the seminar in the college and outsiders can be allowed to attend the session too. Following facilities have been arranged for 1) A room which can hold upto 50 people 2) A projector 3) A PC loaded with Linux If you need something more for holding your session, we can try and work it out. The date that we have availed is Wednesday, 25th February 2009 after 2 p.m. Couple of topics that they have suggested from their side are:- 1) Introduction to Linux(duh!) 2) Python (there's a small group of people who are interested and have begun with python) -- I know it's weird, but it does make it easier to write poetry in perl. :-) -- Larry Wall in 7...

recommend any good outliner programs on ubuntu (i386)

Hi all, Have tried 2 programs-- notecase 0.7.1 and gjots2 on ubuntu 8.04 (i386). Both are buggy and crash randomly or cause saved data to disappear. The developer for notecase has opted for development/support for a commercial version now and there is no support for the free version. Ubuntu also does not maintain it. Gjots2 crashes on pressing the backspace key. I have been using freemind 0.9 but it has some drawbacks-- particularly speed (because of implementation in java) and features not found in the outliners. This release includes numerous updated software packages, such as the K Desktop Environment 3.5.10 (KDE), an updated version of the GNOME desktop environment 2.22.2, the Xfce 4.4.2 desktop environment, LXDE 0.3.2.1, the GNUstep desktop 7.3, X.Org 7.3, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1, GIMP 2.4.7, Iceweasel 3.0.6 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Firefox), Icedove 2.0.0.19 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Thunderbird), PostgreSQL 8.3.6, MySQL 5.0.51a, GNU Compiler Collection 4.3.2, Linux kernel version 2.6.26, Apache 2.2.9, Samba 3.2.5, Python 2.5.2 and 2.4.6, Perl 5.10.0, PHP 5.2.6, Asterisk 1.4.21.2, Emacs 22, Inkscape 0.46, Nagios 3.06, Xen Hypervisor 3.2.1 (dom0 as well as domU support), OpenJDK 6b11, and more than 23,000 other ready-to-use software packages (built from over 12,000 source packages). With the integration of X.Org 7.3 the X server autoconfigures itself with most hardware. Newly introduced packages allow the full support of NTFS filesystems and the use of most multimedia keys out of the box. Support for Adobe(R) Flash(R) format files is available via the swfdec or Gnash plugins. Overall improvements for notebooks have been introduced, such as out of the box support of CPU frequency scaling. For leisure time several new games have been added, including puzzle games as well as first-person shooters. Also notable is the introduction of "goplay", a graphical games browser offering filters, search, screenshots and descriptions for games in Debian. The availability and updates of OpenJDK, GNU Java compiler, GNU Java bytecode interpreter, Classpath and other free versions of Sun's Java technology, into Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 allow us to ship Java-based applications in Debian's "main" repository. Further improvements in system security include the installation of available security updates before the first reboot by the Debian Installer, the reduction of setuid root binaries and open ports in the standard installation, and the use of GCC hardening features in the builds of several security-critical packages. Various applications have specific improvements, too. PHP for example is now built with the Suhosin hardening patch. For non-native English speaking users the package management systems now support translated package descriptions and will automatically show the description of a package in the native language of the user, if available. Debian GNU/Linux can be installed from various installation media such as DVDs, CDs, USB sticks and floppies, or from the network. GNOME is the default desktop environment and is contained on the first CD. Other desktop environments - KDE, Xfce, or LXDE - can be installed through two new alternative CD images. Again available with Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 are multi-arch CDs and DVDs supporting installation of multiple architectures from a single disc; and this release adds Blu-ray Discs, allowing the archive for an entire architecture to be shipped on a single BD. In addition to the regular installation media, Debian GNU/Linux can now also be directly used without prior installation. The special images used, known as live images, are available for CDs, USB sticks, and netboot setups. Initially, these are provided for the amd64 and i386 architectures only. The installation process for Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 has been improved in many ways: among many other improvements, support for installation from more than one CD or DVD has been restored, firmware required by some devices can be loaded by using removable media, and installations via Braille display are supported. The installer boot process has also received much attention: a graphical menu can be used to choose front-ends and desktop environments, and to select expert or rescue mode. The installation system for Debian GNU/Linux has now been translated to 63 languages. Debian GNU/Linux can be downloaded right now via bittorrent (the recommended way), jigdo or HTTP; see Debian GNU/Linux on CDs [1] for further information. It will soon be available on DVD, CD-ROM and Blu-ray Disc from numerous vendors [2], too. Upgrades to Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 from the previous release, Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codenamed "Etch") are automatically handled by the aptitude package management tool for most configurations, and to a certain degree also by the apt-get package management tool. As always, Debian GNU/Linux systems can be upgraded painlessly, in place, without any forced downtime, but it is strongly recommended to read the release notes [3] for possible issues, and for detailed instructions on installing and upgrading. Still problems with kubuntu 8.10 wired internet

Hi, I am still not able to get over the problem. I get no connection from the MTNL internet from different places using the ethernet. I have an Acer Aspire One laptop and using Kubuntu 8.10. I recently upgraded the kernel. ifconfig shows an address in eth0 for inet6 but no address or mask for inet. I tried what Rony had said to manually edit /etc/network/interfaces or to use nano but both did not give any result. Sometimes, after the edit I get eth0 connection "unmanaged". I tried to change to "managed=true" but even that did not work. When I go to K->applications->system->network tools I can see that there is both ipv6 and ipv4 in lo but only ipv6 in eth0. I believe MTNL dhcp requires ipv4. Any workarounds? Thanking you in advance. Sanjay

allowing restricted sites via squid

Hi All, We are using squid along with squidguard to block the websites. Now due to company policy we've blocked all the email sites with squidguard blacklist, wherein we've also blocked gmail.google.com Now, our company has purchesed domain name specific mail address from google. for example mail.ourdomain.com, wherein if anyone types mail.ourdomain.com it will be redirected to ourdoman specific gmail. The problem here is as squidguard is blocking gmail.google.com and which is inturn backbehind mail.ourdomain.com, the users are not able to access that site. What we want to do now is, we still want to block gmail access, but if someone goes thru mail.ourdomain.com, then he should get the access to gmail. How can we achieve this? Few more bits about our squid. It is configured in non-transperant mode. i.e. we mannually provide the proxy to users. Kmail nuking mails

Hi, I have a folder in kmail with some read messages and some unread messages. The last read message is blank. No subject, no sender, no date and no content. If this is deleted, the next mail also vanishes - no subject, sender, date and content. And if it is deleted same thing happens to the next one. But if I do not delete the 'no subject' mail, I can read the next mail and so on. All the other folders are ok. Internet problems

Dear All, Having a problem with getting the network with my MTNL modem through ethernet. I might add that I have MTNL ethernet modems (ADSL) in my home, my office and my father's office. However, though DHCP is enabled on all three, my laptop (Acer Aspire One) does not seem able to connect at any of the three. When I ask for a new connection after connecting the wire (the wire gets detected so I don't get the "no carrier" message) I get the state of device eth0 as "ip configuration" by hovering the cursor over the icon of Knetworkmanager. The ehternet light lights up on the router and the little light at the ethernet point on my laptop also lights up. So I think the cable is ok in all places. The desktops at all the three places are working. One curious thing is that Knetworkmanager tries to make a connection and gives the state for decive eth0 as "ip configuration" even when there is no wire in the ethernet jack if I ask for a new connection. In fact, even when there is no wire, I do not get the "no carrier" message. The connections at the mtnl router level are by PPPoE. Hello All, Recently Knopper released new version of Knoppix (KNOPPIX 6.0),With lot of new features, which includes. 1.A.D.R.I.A.N.E. <http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-adriane/index-en.html>(Audio Desktop Reference Implementation And Networking Environment) is a talking menu system, which is supposed to make work and internet access easier for computer beginners, even if they have no sight contact to the computers monitor. A graphical environment with also talking programs and arbitrary magnification using compiz-fusion <http://www.compiz-fusion.org/>, is another option. 2.Accellerated boot procedure: Independently from the usual SysV bootscripts, multiple tasks of system initialization are run in parallel, so that interactive desktops are reached very fast. Who will be seat-holders? 4] What is the penalty for verbal abuse? Removal from the conversation? Removal from the forum? 5] What is the tentative deadline for drafting an action plan? 6] Which are the people/resources we know we've got in the bag? * Here is the 'Six Boxes Approach', (by Bill Blundel, Washington Post) which you can use to structure a mass of information into usable shape, by considering the points: HISTORY IMPACT SCOPE CENTRAL REASONS GATHERING AND ACTION OF OPPOSING FORCES THE FUTURE This can be used while discussing too. My DLINK 502T ADSL modem is behaving real flaky. Today it spontaneously reset my programmed values (ip, incoming rules etc.) to factory default (192.168.1.1)! When I try to changes it IP number to a different network, it simply does not save it. I realize there are a lot of folks here with the service. hi, I just got a Logitech QuickCam Go. I'm trying to record video with it but failing. The webcam is supported (same hardware is a the QuickCam Chat). Here is what I have done after googling. I can record a jpg with (the backslashes are mine) mplayer tv:// -tv \ driver=v4l:device=/dev/video0:width=320:height=240:outfmt=rgb24 \ -frames 1 -vo jpeg I get a file 000000001.jpg in my current directory. I can also see a video feed in the video config of kopete. Hence, the webcam works. What I can't get working is this mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l:width=320:height=240:device=/dev/video0 -nosound -ovc lavc -o wcrecording.avi wcrecording.avi just shows a black screen when palyed w/ mplayer I also tried ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 /tmp/out.mpg but it barfs w/ this error [video4linux2 @ 0xb7f6b110]Missing/Wrong parameters /dev/video0: Error while opening file can someone please help ? thanks. Website does not open Hi All, We are accessing airtel website with following address. http://117.99.128.32:81/ or http://117.99.128.32/ So far when we were having windows proxy server, we were able to access the site through our proxy, but as now we've moved to squid3.0 stable1 proxy server, the site does not open. When you hit the above address, the title gets displays in the brower but the page does not open. Which means the request is going to the airtel server & the request is coming back upto the proxy server, but it is not passing through proxy. Can someone let us know, why is this happening? which stable version should one use

Hi All, Whenever I visit squid-cache.org site. I always have a doubt is, why there are multiple stable version available for production release? What i mean is, when there is 3.0 stable release is available for production, then still why 2.7 is available. I can understand that, older versions should be available to the users, but then it may come under older version head not in the current versions list. Other thing is, when there is a latest version available, what is the need of develpment in the older version. i.e when we've ver3.0 then why 2.8. All the patches, bug fixes, new additions can be done in the newer release then why ver2.8? Is there any specific reason for that? If yes, then which version one should use? Because all the versions give you production release. I also have observed that, even after publishing the stable version on site, they withdraw the older stable version, do something & again put back. My question is, if you withdraw any software version for any reason, it does not become a stable version. If anyone is doing some bug fixing into it or even a minor change of code, it should appear in the latest stable release. This gives you a track of bugs & bugfixes. But if you takeback any stable release and put it again after some time. What does it mean? If it was stable why it was taken back? If not does it really justify the stability? For e.g. At this moment , the squid3.0 stable 10, stable3, stable 2 are withdrawn. Some peoples find my questions silly, but I've a doubt and its always better ask instead of knowing nothing. kget can resume downloads, other download managers can't

Hi all, I've been having the annoying problem for quite a few days. kget is able to resume interrupted file transfers effortlessly. However wget, curl, axel, lftp when trying to resume, send the appropriate Range Header in HTTP/1.1 but fail to get a reply back. They wait for a long long time, still nothing. What is it that causes this, and is their a solution, so that I can use wget/curl for the downloads. Thanks, Nikhil

Choice of PDA

Hi, I am in the market for a new PDA. I've been using a Handspring Visor for the last several years but it's now really falling apart :(. Initially I used to sync it to linux using coldsync + conduits but later found jpilot and things were really cool. Two way sync was a dream. I presently also have a Sharp Zaurus 5500 but with openzaurus gone and angstrom developers not really interested in developing for the 5500, I have been looking at stuff on the net and can't really make up my mind. I need the following: Sync - both ways with a _linux desktop_ natively. This is essential. I'm willing to bust my chops setting it up the first time but I'd love to have a scenario where I just plug it in (or use wifi/bt) and it syncs. Calender - with reminder Contacts - with categories (this seems to nix the Nokia E51) Password wallet - again essential, preferably something I can read on my desktop too. At present I am using gnukeyring, which is perfect for the job. Ability to install other software - I have some medical books, and OTP generator amongst other things. Think kismet/wellenreiter. Cross platform - I'd love to be able to have the ability to sync my _next_ pda/smartphone with this desktop software and not have to manually copy over all my stuff. wifi/bt - either but both would be super. I have looked at the Nokia E51, and seen openmoko on the net. Any other choces ? any gotchas ? I have looked at opensync but it does not seem to be ready yet. Connecting to net but apt-get does not work

I get this response on a computer desktop at home. The machine is connected on the internet thru a wireless router . On the same router my laptop can access apt-get etc. On this machine , with 8.10, internet works but not apt-get. Request support : Gujarat governments possible move to have FOSS in schools state-wide

Hi All, I am Vinay from IT for Change, an NGO in Bangalore. The Gujarat government has announced a 500 crore ICT education program for its schools. (http://www.indianexpress.com/news/rs-500-cr-for-computers-in-schools/405217/ ) .They have also said that they are inclined to opt for FOSS in the schools. They have not however fully decided. What has possibly queered the pitch is that Microsoft has said that they will offer windows for free. Getting FOSS in schools will greatly benefit the Gujarat government and all the students. Hence some of us are initiating a campaign to influence the government to decide in favour of FOSS. We need the support of the FOSS community here, especially the FOSS community from Gujarat. I am writing to ILUG-Bombay though since I heard that a lot of members here are supportive of the Gujarat FOSS scenario. If a lot of people from Gujarat join us in the campaign it will help to get the government to go the FOSS way. Showing the Gujarat government that there is a vibrant FOSS community might assure them that there might be support for them if they go the FOSS way. What will also tip the scale is if can show the government that a localised (Gujarati) distro of FOSS, localised FOSS apps exists, which can be used in schools. We need the help of the community here too - to help us figure out what apps/distros should be suggested. Requesting your support in this campaign. cache usage check

Hi All, Can any one let me know, how much cache is being used by my squid3, so that I can increase/decrease it, if required. Currently I've 2GB of cache defined in spool. Is it really required? If yes, is it really been using? When I look into my access log file, I can find most of the time it is TCP_MISS/200, TCP_MISS/204, TCP_MISS/304.
