[OT] Networking IP Query.

Hello All, A few days back I gave a small introductory training session to some freshers on networking, ip addresses, subnets, gateways and dns. However after that one question comes to my mind about subnets. Can we have multiple networks with adjacent subnets on a common LAN connection or do they need to be physically different too? For example can we have 192.168.1-31/27 and 192.168.32-63/27 on the same LAN switch as independent subnet islands? Theoretically it looks so. When we set up network information on a host pc, we give the IP address and subnet. However, how does that host know the starting and ending ip of its subnet so that it will not talk to its adjacent subnet? ......For example, how does host 192.168.1.33/27 know that its subnet starts from ip 32 upto 63 and will not talk to 31 or less? Hi, Opensuse 10.3 has been released on some mirrors. Can anybody help get it ? Currently available at: ftp://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/opensuse/distribution/10.3/iso/dvd/ http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/opensuse/distribution/10.3/iso/dvd/ Could be available at other mirrors but not all of them have made it available. I checked a few and found the above two have the ISOs. There is no official annoucement regarding its availability. The above mirrors also have torrents available. The ISO for i386 is around 4.1 GB. Tata Indicom Broadband @ Linux box

Hi, Few days back, I subscribed to Tata Indicom Broadband ( www.tataindicombroadband.in ). I chose the Infinity 1 Mbps plan. This apparently comes with no installation charges even if you don't give commitment for more than 1 month. For other plans you have to commit for 4 months to get that 1K INR waiver. I found that they do the feasilbilty quite fast and response time was quite fast as well ( this might depend on locality). But co-ordination between the tech and marketing dudes was not so good. Oh and neither of them knew if they supported Linux :O. Surprisingly the callcentre dude confidently said they do and the tech dude would setup everything when he comes to my place. Cut to my home ( few days later, i.e. yesterday ) - the tech dude arrives. When I tell him that I have linux on all the boxes he made a few calls and finally said he doesn't know how it works on Linux but he will get a mail from his boss and will come back and do the setup. After some random conversation, I asked him if he can do the setup on Windows atleast and he managed to do it on my windows partition in my laptop ( yes, I didnot delete it yet :). The general process these chaps follow is - login to some webconsole of theirs where they find data about the customer - go to the tata indicome bb website and register with the Serial number and PIN code. After which you have to select your username, password and the usual cruft. Then the create a account on your box and check if everything works and leave. The Linux way works much faster :). I followed [1]. But all that is needed is "sudo pppoeconf". If you already have a /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider, back it up if you care for existing settings. After that is mostly selecting yes or no. For user name - please select username(a)vsnl.net or whatever domain they have given you. But point being the complete userid+domain has to be there, afaik. Type in your password. ( when the dudes set it up, they generally put passwd as tata123, change it using the website ) Don't know if this is worth adding into the wiki. Hi, I was at FREED.IN/2007 in Delhi - a event organised by ilug-del. This even was known as FreeDel earlier. This was the first even I attended by ilug-del. Some luggers from BOM have attended FreeDel many times before. It was a wonderful experience. Meeting many old friends and making many more new friends. Quite a few from ILUG-BOM were present. Many if not all of them were actually speakers at the event. The event kick started with Raj Mathur opening address and lamp lighting ceremony. Shawn Kwon gave a wonderful talk on his experiences with FOSS in Korea. It was followed by Atul Chitnis's interesting talk on innovation and startup. Was a good topic for budding entrepreneurs in the audience. Speakers from LUG-BOM included, Devdas Bhagat,Philip Tellis Barkha Khatri, Anurag Patel, Friji Karthikeyan, Arun Khan, Ananth A, Gaurav Chaturvedi, Dinesh Shah (who is a temporary Delhite atm) , Kartik Mistry and me. ( hope I didnot forget anyone, sorry if I did ). I finally met some people for the first time whom I knew from mailing lists and irc - Raj Mathur, Kingsly John (nicest and most helpful person ever!), Karanbir Singh ( you *have* hear him speak at least once, especially in a bof sort of environment ). There were quite a impromptu bofs. It often started as a chat and went on to become a fullfledged bof. One example was - when Mayank Sharma ( of Linux.com fame ), Aanjhan Ranganathan and me were discussing how we often meet at foss conf at various places - when Karanbir Singh joined us and Kingsly a little later. Since then the discussion took a right turn and went straight into discussing how certain aspects of ISPs work and "pairing" between ISPs work and other things even. After that a reporter from Tehelka.com joined us and asked many questions about FOSS. From that point on, many others joined the bof. That was one enlightening discussion. There were two panel discussions even and many many talks in different tracks. There was a lot of new things to learn, I must say. I had the opportunity to meet two GSoC candidates for the first time - Piyush Verma (KDE) and Anant Narayan ( Bell Labs ). Interesting chaps. Hope to see them again in future.Met old friends and known people from the Indian foss scene. Other lugs represented were - Pune LUG, ILug-Cal, people from Bangalore were there even ILUG-Del hospitality was awesome. I have never seen so many kababs at one time. ;). Some of us stayed in JNU campus, the place is really nice. The event was co-organised by JNU - School of Information Technology. Bottom line - great conference. You should seriously consider attending the event next time. Btw, it really is a community event. The line between speakers and volunteers is almost invisible. Quite a few speakers happily got "volunteered". Be there next time to see it yourself and experience it first hand. Cheers! Actually, As far as I know they are replacing all their logins/ PPPoE based connections with a browser based login. Once you login (yes it works fine with firefox), your effectively online. I think they had a PPPoE connection here, but it was before i took up tata, when i joined they just gave me something called the TI BB Web Dialer [loginmum.tataindicombroadband.in]. Which in a way is good cause it works with any browser with js. Satish

The thread referred to in the subject line started with Mail delivery issues, and then started discussing some newbie problems, and ended up with some discussion about shorthand and being literate in English ... Our emails are archived. When you search emails using any search engine, getting replies and help based on short hand English becomes difficult. The user's group's emails are a great source of help for a number of people who look for help on the Internet. Therefore it is necessary to write questions and reply messages as comprehensively as possible. Our questions and replies to them are valuable knowledge base. improper language and subject of threads does disturb the implicit protocol. Therefore, please use good subject lines, and if necessary use new subject lines, or edit subject lines for appropriate archiving. And of course as good language as possible. Nagarjuna

Hi I have searched for a document ion that allows a mail server to automatically add a banner to the message that sender composes, but found none . Hi, I need to run some stuff as root after users log in to the server. Need access to $REMOTE_HOST & $USER etc. This server has KDE & users don't want GNOME. Is there an equivalent to GDM PostLogin/Default for KDE? Or is there any other way to achieve same results like by inserting my code lines in some script Or by putting in a script somewhere? Problem with broken package, Ubuntu 6.06

Hello, I am a new to the world of Linux. I have Ubuntu 6.06 LTS installed on my machine. And I have a problem with it, I apologise for such a long mail but to be on the safe side, I thought it would be better to describe the problem as elaborately as possible as I am unaware of the functioning of this system. Since this version of Ubuntu did not come with gcc i tried getting and installing it from the internet. But while doing so (I admit I was totally unaware what I was doing..) I somehow messed up with installed packages on the system. The installation of a package called libc6 did not complete successfully and I got some error saying all dependencies could not be satisfied. It also said (although I don't precisely remember the exact message..) that a service called "gdm" is running that interfered with the installation. [Till then I was unaware of the [package managers available on board; my fault! Didn't read the manual!] Then, when i tried using the package manager [The "Add/Remove" utility & Synaptic] the software refused go any further saying there is a broken package on the machine that needs to be removed first. It instructed me to run the command "apt-get -install -f" at the terminal. I did. The message I got there was that two more packages (ubuntu-base & ubuntu-minimal) will have to be removed from the system along with the broken package "libc6". I cancelled the process right there.. Because the warning said it would free up more than 2GB space on the disk on removing the ubuntu-minimal package. I suspect this must include quite essential parts of the system and therefore chose not to remove it then before getting more information about it. But I am not able to install any more packages unless I remove these three packages from the system. Meanwhile I also requested the latest version, 7.04 (Fiesty Fawn) of Ubuntu from the Ubuntu website and have received the disk today. I have seen that it includes updated versions of some of the packages, has gcc preinstalled, and I suppose, is definitely an improvement over Dapper Drake. Now my doubt is: 1. How can I resolve the error on my installed system, 6.06 LTS (the problem described above)? 2. Is removing the package "ubuntu-minimal" from the system safe? Can it be restored to previous state? (I'm on dial-up, downloading 2GB of data is an impossibility!) 3.* Is there another way? can i install the latest software i received today (Ubuntu 7.04) overwriting the previous one, but preserving the user accounts, settings, software and data that i've already stored there? For instance, I've installed Mozilla 2.0.0.6, while v 7.04 comes with Mozilla 2.0.0.3! Can i keep the newer version there without messing up anything? (I also have plug-ins like Flash Player for Mozilla installed..) 4. If not 3, can I at least keep the data on the disk unharmed while installing the new (Ubuntu 7.04 over Ubuntu 6.06 LTS) OS. Asked 1 and 2 just for gaining knowledge about what can be done in such a situation, however I want to install the newer version nevertheless, so please at least show me a way to do at least one of 3 or 4 if possible! I really appreciate your cooperation and concern. { * Here I try to describe the currently installed system's configuration as much as I can comprehend and remember. 1. one password protected user account. 2. dial up connection set up. (for modem set-up, I used the scanModem script, thanks to http://www.linmodems.org/; it was very useful and easy to work with) I use "wvdial" to connect to the internet. 3. Mozilla 2.0.0.6 installed (removed the default 1.x version that was preinstalled), + Flash Player plug-in + loads of Mozilla extensions. 4. I have a dual boot with M$ (khidkiyan :p), so, all doors and windows mounted (read FAT32 & NTFS drives! =)); actually Ubuntu does that by default; no pain. 5. 405 MB of data on the Linux drive. Can I preserve it while installing V 7.04 over V 6.06 LTS. 6. Currently fsck, while booting, gives me an error saying the boot sector and its backup are different, and provides all the offsets/differences that it encountered. If fsck logs it to a file, i can post it here if i know where it is logged, that might give a better picture. } [[ About my internet connection.. List, Terms used: IDE: Integrated Development Environment CS: Computer Science IT: Information Technology I was thinking about this for sometime now, and realized, that there wasn't any emphasis on the "tools" being used in courses (graduate, postgraduate) (CS and IT). They may not be of utmost importance, but I'll like to know your opinions and choices. 1. Most of the courses use Windows as their OS and have Notepad as the default text editor used for programming languages such as Java etc. Even for HTML, CSS etc, notepad remains the default text editor. Notepad (default) doesn't have any syntax highlighting or other options. Surprisingly, students are told they learn better, if they are not equipped with these. (Text editor features) I wonder, programmers under *nix, have Konsole ( ;) ) based text editors as well as GUI text editors (Just to differentiate for the sake of it: vim, nano and Kate, Emacs, gEdit) which provide syntax highlighting and a host of other options. Are they at a loss? 2. IDEs are great for development. Because, they hide the actual commands of compiling, interpreting / running the program. (some) They also enable the user with point-click tools and generate code for those tools / components. Surprisingly, the same students are allowed to use the Turbo C++ 3.0 (16-bit compiler) IDE with syntax highlighting for C / C++ programs and are able to write typical C / C++ programs later. The question is, are Text Editors better for students to begin programming or are IDEs better for students? Blender Issues.

Hello All, I have installed Blender 2.4 for Windows along with Python 2.5.1 for a client. Blender imports the .3ds file format from 3D Studio. However, in 3D Studio, it has to be exported from .max format to .3ds first. Now what happened was that after exporting from max to 3ds into Blender, a chair has turned into a drawing board used by draughtsmen with an extra pole sticking perpendicular out of the board. Has anyone on this list had such teething problems in Blender? What could be the work around for this? I will check it out on the net too. Any help will be greatly appreciated. -- Regards, Rony. Test Mail Email Problem.

Hello All, Sorry for this test mail. I have been facing a wall when sending mails to this list. In the past few days all my mails to the list have bounced. The technical reason is a qmail error "CNAME lookup failed temporarily. (#4.4.3)". This remained even after changing from Yahoo UK to India. Hi all, I have downloaded scractchbox-core/libs/toolchain . According installation instructions I extracted those tarballs into /. So all extracted files comes in /scratchbox. They are already used to the software and after I take over the systems, their problems get eliminated steadily and they use the systems with minimum or no hanging and crashes. If you have to work in a terminal only environment, naturally command line and scripts is the way. If you are in a gui environment, and if the gui is created well, it would do the same functions as script.What is important is to understand the concept of the job in hand, not expertise in a particular interface. For example in the ADSL and wireless routers there is a tiny linux system running and it can be configured using scripts. However if that was the only way, how many service engineers would be able to use the command line interface? Instead, there is a gui firmware interface which only the service personnel would understand and they correctly enter the values according to the customer's environment and the gui internally creates relevant scripts and runs them. That is technology. You can't fight it simply because it makes things easy for others. There are people who are at ease with a screen full of text but there are others who feel intimidated by it and require some graphical interface to interact. Software Freedom day event was a grand success

It is the time to look at our history. SMC is reactivated from a dead state, as a result of personal discussions with praveen, hiran & vimaljoseph in the sidelines of GPLv3 Conference in bangalore. The new team is setup at last year SFD celebrations in Thrissur. Suresh, Baiju(the founder of SMC), Hussain KH (rachana), Anwar, Students in GEC etc also joined in the team at that time. Now we have more than 30 developers+localizers. The astounding progress within the short span of time is described below * December 2006: Debian Installer is Fully Translated into Malayalam ( The Work of Debian malayalam, a sub team of Swathanthra malayalam computing) * January 2007: Santhosh Thottingal of SMC done a complete architectural rewrite of Dhvani, the Indian language text to speech system by Ramesh hariharan & added Malayalam support to It. * March 2007 : participated & Conducted workshops in FOSS Meet@NITC, Kozhikkode * March 2007: Swathanthra Malayalam Computing selected as a participating Organisation ( and only Indian Organisation) in Google Summer of Code Project. 5 projects were allotted. * April 2007: GNU aspell supported Malayalam (major issues are resolved) * May 2007: Swanalekha: a Phonetic Input scheme for malayalam using SCIM * June 2007: Lalitha, Bolnagiri based xkb keyboard for malayalam by Jinesh * July 2007: Added pango support to Tuxtype by Mobin M as part of GSoC work. Open Office Solution Required

Hello All, An OO user in Windows is facing some problems with Spreadsheet. He uses the .xls format. Problem 1: His file consists of many rows and columns. Cells in each row are related to each other. Now in Excel he can sort columns individually and during each sorting, entire rows get sorted. So after every sort, the cells in each row are the same. It is the entire row that gets sorted. In OO he can sort columns but it sorts cells in that column only and this breaks the row and ultimately the table cells get cross connected. Problem 2: In Excel, he can secure a file but allow partial changes like changing the cell background colour. This is needed as his job status indicator is colour coded as the job progresses. His employees can only change colours as they progress with the job. In OO he can secure a file but it is like ON/OFF. Once secure, no partial changes are allowed. It's a proven fact! In a recent research done by Indian Multiplex theaters. So they have decided to make their websites compatible only for Internet Explorer (Yeeks!). Why waste time for people who doesn't watch movies. The two best Cinemas in Hyderabad are PVR Cinemas and Prasadz Multiplex. Seems that both have worked hard to make their online ticket booking websites non-compatible with Fx. (The site only works with IE. It doesn't work with Opera, Firefox in both GNU and Windows and Epiphany and Konqueror in GNU). OK, Now that both of the sites are not working, Let me Google for other options. Found that there's a Website BookMyShow, who can do the trick. Well... Bingo! It doesn't work with Fx either. So, it's a proven fact. Firefox users doesn't watch movies. They are simply open source nerds who spends time with terminals. BusinessWorld magazine has an article on the recent standards battle at the Bureau of Indian Standards over Microsoft OOXML proposal. As you know, the OOXML proposal was rejected unanimously by the LITD15 committee formed by BIS to review OOXML. The ODF Alliance which includes FSF, Red Hat, IBM and Sun worked hard to ensure that OOXML was not approved. Hello All, I have not received any mails lately but I can see them on the glug site. This is in response to Kenneth Gonsalves's mail quoted below. "I am not laughing. What exactly is a bug? When, for example, in kword I save a file in OOo format and OOo is unable to open it, is that a bug? Or is it a failure of software - just bad software? As far as I know, the approach to writing software is to first write a use case, or all possible use cases that you can think of. Then write the software. Then write tests to cover all the above use cases, and release the software when it passes the tests. There will be unusual use cases and edge cases which are not anticipated and for which tests havent been written. Failure in these cases are bugs. But no failure in the main use-case. In the case of saving in OOo format and OOo not opening it, this is not a bug. Because it is the main usecase of the particular feature. A simple test - open an OOo file, save it in OOo format and open it in OOo would have detected this, and the feature should not have been released. Yes, bugs will be there - but when a main/common use case fails - I dont think it can be called a bug and it is no laughing matter either. I havent gone into kword code to find if there are test suites, I hope there are ..." Kenneth has echoed my thoughts exactly and put it nicely in words. Having bugs in a software is possible but after more than 5 years if a software behaves as if it was a beta and released just yesterday for the first time, then this is a flaw in the software not some mistake or attitude problem of the installing person. There is nothing hilarious about a person complaining about such grave issues in the software. The cell colour problem I had highlighted was not even connected to any proprietary file formats. It happens in Open formats. M$ softwares may have more bugs, be less stable than nix based ones but when they are in the stable working mode, at least they do the job they are intended to do. And if FOSS fans feel it is below dignity to compare libre software with M$ ones, then why is it that whenever a problem is pointed out in the libre software, they start counting the bugs in M$ ones. Why can't they except that the particular software has serious flaws that need to be corrected. Free software is no longer the free blood donation camp. Today major libre software and distro development is taking place through huge sponsorship and donations and by corporate participation. The programmers are compensated for their efforts, so while the institution is giving away the software for free, the developer is not doing any charity. Then why not expect quality work instead of a 'Fix it yourself' community kit. This is in response to Krish's reply to JTD's mail and I quote... "actually the entire problem is that people don't realise the values of running a script. and by the way running a script is "nothing to do " with programming. I think clicking on next next finish etc is not a real good way of software setup." Simplifying a procedure means that one can do more work instead of wasting time running scripts. How would we feel if we got a mobile phone where instead of pressing buttons, we had to create and run scripts every time we wanted to dial a number or access the phone directory or any other function. The same process is happening in the background but the programmers have provided a beautiful interface to simply press a button. If scripting is so important, why don't we start doing all our home and office work in assembly language or machine code? This will give us better control of the hardware. It is up to the programmer to make software intuitive and easy to handle. It has no relation with scripting skills of the vendor or user. Let each one do his job properly. -- Regards, Rony. remote MYSQL connection error

Hi i am trying to connet to a mysql databse whose servers IP is( 203.1123.28.111 ) from a remote PC and get the following errors [root@server ~]# mysql -h 203.1123.28.111 -u root -p Enter password: ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 203.1123.28.111 (113) Also on the server i cannot stop the firewall setting cuse of security reasons ..... most of the help on line say that the problem is resolved if the server's fire wall is disabled . Do these two daemons work simultaneously.In my main.cffile i have thne following statements #virtual_transport=virtual ....... does this men that the LDA is not running. ?? Setting up PPPoE connection on Debian

Hi list, I'm using a PPPoE connection to connect to my ISP - worldnet. (it's what's commonly referred to as "cablewalla ka net"). Under Windows I use the RASPPPOE protocol. I've been able to connect to it under Fedora using the nice "system-config-networking" tool. Under Debian I couldn't find any GUI tool. There is a command-line tool called "pppoeconf". I've performed the steps given on this site: http://users.pandora.be/Asterisk-PBX/PPPoE.htm The strange thing is that although this utility prompts for username and password, it doesn't give an option to select the Access-Concentrator and Service-Provider name. List, I was trying out cursor themes in Kubuntu and changed it to a theme that was called "X Cursor themes" or so. I selected it and logged out to set the current cursor theme as "X cursor theme". However, the file seems to be missing and Kubuntu disables starting X because, it is unable to find the file. I'm clueless about which file it (cursor) has manipulated that instructs it to load the cursor when it has to start the GUI. Alternatively, if it is possible, can I change the cursor them from the CLI? I tried disabling the InputDevice (mouse, cursor) by commenting them in /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that mouse is disabled and then, I could just reset the cursor theme, but that fails as well. Problem setting date in debian "testing" with KDE 3.5

Hello, I have a peculiar problem with my system date. I'm using debian "testing" with KDE 3.5. When i set the date, either through the KDE control center, or through the backend using the "date" command (as root ofcourse), it gets reset everytime i reboot my m/c. Btw, i have a hp (Compaq nc6400) lappy. Actually, the problem seems to be with the locale. In control center, if i set the time, with the locale, after a reboot, the same time is shown as UTC. Whereas, if i set the UTC time through the "date command" (i don't know how to pass locale to date command, so i'm assuming that it sets the UTC time), then after reboot, the UTC time itself moves 5.5 hrs ahead :( Thanks a lot in advance. regards, Pradnyesh.

Hi I have a issue here, i have a postfix server that uses mapping files to query the database. In my senerio i have a domain called niteshn.info. and i have a mapping file in /etc/postfix called mysql_virtual_alias_maps.cf which ahs the following content --> user = postfix password = postfix hosts = 127.0.0.1 dbname = postfix query = SELECT goto FROM alias WHERE address='%s' AND active = 1 In my main.cf file i have a entry -----> virtual_alias_maps = mysql:/etc/postfix/mysql_virtual_alias_maps.cf When i query this database with the postmap command i get the following error : postmap -q -v "@niteshn.info" mysql:/etc/postfix/mysql_virtual_alias_maps.cf (enter) postmap: fatal: open database @niteshn.info.db: No such file or directory how do i check is my mapping files work??? -- Warm Regards Agnello . Hello, I recently installed Debian Etch as a dual boot on my laptop . I am having an issue with logging off . Also ctrl+alt+f1 does not bring me to the shell . All I get is a black screen in both the cases and i have to manually shutdown my laptop and reboot. I am however able to shutdown and restart from within gnome.I am new to linux so cant figure out whats wrong. I tried to find out what onboard video card im using from within windows by right clicking on the desktop then going to : display properties->settings->advanced->adapter and there it says : VIA Chrome9 HC IGP. I have already tried the following troubleshooting steps but it didnt work : Already tried steps : --------------------- 1) Tried ctrl+alt+f5 , ctrl+alt+f7 , ctrl+alt+backspace but get the same black screen and have to manually shutdown and reboot. 2) Added vga=771 at the end of the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst . Also tried vga=773,vga=791 3) Ran the command su cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep "Driver" to get information on driver and the output of the above command is : Driver "kbd" Driver "mouse" Driver "vesa" What could be going wrong ? Hi, Myself Raza.Z.Sayed , from Mumbai. I have recently joined iglug-bom . Well, im kinda new to linux , but ive been using linux for quite some time now as a casual user . Im a student and I find linux more attractive as compared to proprietary OS, not only because it has matured enough to give proprietary software some decent competition but what appeals to me most as a student is that linux being free and open source offers a lot of room for learning and experimentation , which is seriously lacking in a proprietary os like windows. So,ive decided to switch over completely to free and open source software now and plan to use Linux as the primary OS I use on my machine. My machine has 512 MB of RAM and 1.46 GHz processor. So,i need your suggestion as to which distro would be the best desktop os for me,in terms of atleast the following factors. 1. Support for wireless connectivity, as i need to be able to use WiFi. 2. Support for Bluetooth . 3. Support for ADSL connections , i use MTNL Triband on my machine 4. Good choice of software and wide support for the same available. Microsofts Licensing w/ linux and patents

Has anyone thought to speculate why microsoft is so keen to tie up linux vendors in their reciprocal cant sue policy? I was just thinking and heres something at the back of my head. I am not gonna do any MS bashing, I current am using WinXP, but honestly think about this. Microsoft is notorious in taking ideas and porting it to work to their advantage, Vista is a very good example of taking mac to windows. Previously too, alot of unix stuff or something has been taken into MS. Perhaps now they are trying to take linux based development into their mainstream code as that has more development. Since it is all closed source, there is officially no policing being done on the patents *possibly* violated here. Other companies like microsoft and the whole old SCO claimed of patent infringement, the only way they can do that is because linux's code is out in the open. Since their code is closed, who is to say who copied whose code? Also how do you know that there isnt any derivative work carried out in the past or future on such a platform? I do have to stick to MS for my needs, I am not gonna deny that. But at the same time I am not looking at any MS bashing on this subject. But the fact of the matter is history has shown MS to be less likely to have new ideas than copying them. GPL v3 seems to be designed to help "protect" the code from being part of the deals vendors make with MS, but honestly I prefer less restrictions, like v2. As it doesnt make sense with v3 as there is no way to know if anyone in closed source has really violated them without giving up too much rights. Perhaps the governing patents body should take a look at both codes and see whats really going on. Ofcourse these are just my 2c. Regards, Satish

Hi I Have a query , i have configured postfix on my linux system and have configured postfixadmin ( connected to mysql databases) . To administer the virtual domaina, when i log to the main admin pannel and add a mail box to a domain it says "unable to create mailbox! Bind and DNS Cache

Hello All, We were discussing DNS caching and the bind configuration. However, bind is a DNS server whereas we only want a DNS cache that updates itself automatically. Maybe I understood it wrong but on the net I found this link for DNS caching. It uses a package called dnsmasq. It works on my system. Hi all, Of late, I have noticed that MTNL's DNS servers 203.94.227.70 and 203.94.243.70 are unresponsive from time to time. Also google and google related sites (gmail,orkut,etc.) open very sluggishly. Has anyone here experienced this? Does anyone know any DNS servers better than MTNL's? Firefox blocked?

Thats almost like saying, PVR's should be banned as users have the ability to forward through them and skip advertisements. Or other channels must be banned, so if you are watching serial XYZ on channel ABC, you must continue to watch it including the ads and not skip it. However, you look at it, if you try to block users, people will just drive traffic away from that site as it is no longer considered as "compliant". Compliancy states that there must be a norm which all users have equal and open access. Give it time, I'm sure someone in the US will sue the website owner on the grounds of non compliance, or inaccessible information, or something similar where you are being biased. If you want to see something stupid, visit hdfcbank.com and check out netsafe and then login. It says IE as minimum requirements. Honestly I dont see the reason for this, but yet its there. According to this, if you use Internet Explorer, you should use a netsafe card, but at the same time you need IE ? See a pattern of stupidity? Its like if you want to use the site, dont use a browser thats safe, however, you should use a netsafe card if you want to be safe. Anyways, if there are any other sites that stop you, you could just simply change the user agent in about:config. What are they going to do next? Block Internet Explorer?.. hehe Regards, Satish

About Myself: I am working for a Networking Consulting company and have 10+ years of expereince in implementing Cisco technologies. Based on my industry experience I wanted to develop a customized helpdesk package.I only have the workflow idea but no developer experience, for which I thought I would put this up in the online forum and see if I could get any affordable help. Project Explaination I have an idea to integrate open source software to develop an helpdesk system. This help desk system will have different components like Network monitoring, Trouble Ticketing System, Network Mapping, Authentication etc. I have indentified a few open source softwares that can do the job, but they are not integrated. I would like to integrate them with few ideas of my own. To start with I am looking at developer who is an expert in PYTHON, MYSQL, Linux and a bit of internetworking knowledge. installed openoffice rpms with alien for total disaster.

hello, has some one faced this? I downloaded openoffice 2.2.1 as suggested on this list and then uncompressed it into a folder and then installed it with the following command. alien -i *.rpm. I did this after going into the RPMS sub directory of the main open office directory. I did not get any errors, just a warning that scripts are not being installed, use --script option for correcting this. I did it again and this time no problem. first I did alien -r *.rpm and then the first -i command along with --script. this time no errors and no warnings. but surprise! I don't have any thing in my applications/ office menu except evolution. I tried finding hard and eventually got /opt/openoffice2.2.1 and in the programs sub directory I found swriter, scalc etc. I can run them all right but now I can't create a shortcut in the office menu nor on the desktop. what should I do. did I install this in the wrong way? again my command was alien -i --script *.rpm. please correct me if I am wrong. regards, Krishnakant.

Linux Compatible Laptop

Dear All, Today at a client's place I had set up a wireless router and tried Ubuntu 7.04 live CD on his Dell XPS M1210 lappy. It not only gave the usual laptop grade Desktop with sound but I clicked on a network icon with a cross on the task bar and it showed the surrounding wireless network. On clicking it I got the interface to enter the 128 bit key and my net was up and running. Bang out of the box. Thanks to the preloaded Vista, the customer will himself download the CD iso from Ubuntu. The wireless network card in the lappy is some Intel one. funny characters on cli login

Hi, I'm using Kubuntu feisty. For some reason, I cannot login to the gui because, /dev/null is created w/ 600 perms. And yes the relevant line in /etc/udev.d/rules does mention /dev/null having 666 perms. Supposedly this is a problem w/ udev. My workaround at the moment is to hit ctrl-alt-f2, login, chmod /dev/null, ctrl-alt-f7 and then I can login to the gui. This needs to be done at every boot. I have 'cn' aliased to sudo chmod 666 /dev/null. Saves some typing :). Now to come to my problem. I inadvertantly hit ctrl-n at the prompt and now the login prompt at the cli is displayed in weird characters. It's like when you type something in wordprocessor and then change to font to wingdings or something. How do I get my normal login prompt back ? many thanks, Sharukh. -- Dr. Sharukh K. R. Pavri. Hi, I have put in the /etc/sudoers file the following line: sadhu ALL=(root) NOPASSWD:/usr/bin/yumex I was expecting that when logged in as user "sadhu" I will be rum yumex without authentication, but it still asks for root authentication when I try to run yumex. Can you please refer me to the correct sudoers syntax or to a how-to. Thanks and regards. sadhu

I have installed bind and configured named.conf 2. I have copied localhost.zone to forward.com and modified below lin.com (my domain name) IN NS ns.lin.com lin.com. IN A 10.36.51.122 ns.lin.com. IN A 10.36.51.122 www.lin.com IN A 10.36.51.122 and in my named.conf zone "lin.com" IN { type master; file "forward.com" }; I have restared my named service without any error. I tried the root (hd0,<Tab> command but it showed some strange output.....it started counting partitions from zero as is well known,but it also showed hda9(ie partition no 10) when I've a total of 2 primary and 1 extended partitions.The extended partition contains 4 partitions for Ubuntu mounted at /,/boot,/home and a swap partition.It also contains a Windows D: partition which was formerly hda9.Presently,after nuking and remaking the /boot partition,the /boot partition is hda9 and all other logical partitions have moved up 1 position each in the partition table. SCO has spent four and a half years arguing that it owns the copyrights to Unix, and that the free Linux operating system includes code stolen from Unix. Its claims suffered what is likely a death blow Friday when a judge in Utah ruled that SCO does not, in fact, own the copyrights to Unix. SCO issued a statement saying it would carry on with other claims against Novell (nasdaq: NOVL - news - people ), and hinted that it might try to appeal Friday’s ruling. Passionate fans of Linux, a free operating system developed collaboratively by programmers from around the world, have argued from the start that SCO’s claims lacked any merit. On pro-Linux Web sites, they’ve been celebrating since Friday, viewing the ruling as vindication. For SCO, it’s a fizzle of an ending to a case that began with loads of bluster and bravado. In March 2003, SCO Group (nasdaq: SCOX - news - people ), a tiny company based in Lindon, Utah, sued IBM (nyse: IBM - news - people ), claiming IBM took code from Unix and put it into Linux. SCO also warned hundreds of customers that they might be in legal trouble for using Linux. The suit got more complicated when Novell, an IBM ally, stepped forward and said that Novell, not SCO, actually owned the Unix copyrights. Novell had licensed Unix to SCO’s predecessor company, and SCO argued that in this transaction it had picked up the copyrights to Unix. Novell, however, claimed it had retained copyrights to Unix code. Before SCO could pursue its case against IBM it had to sue Novell to establish its ownership of the Unix copyrights. The trial was set to begin in September. But on Friday a federal court judge issued a summary judgment declaring that Novell owns the copyrights. In a statement, SCO said it was “obviously disappointed with the ruling,” but also indicated it intends to carry on with its lawsuit against Novell. “Although the district judge ruled in Novell's favor on important issues, the case has not yet been fully vetted by the legal system and we will continue to explore our options with respect to how we move forward from here.” Novell, in a statement, said: “The court's ruling has cut out the core of SCO's case and, as a result, eliminates SCO's threat to the Linux community based upon allegations of copyright infringement of UNIX. We are extremely pleased with the outcome.” IBM did not respond to a request for comment before this story was published. Hi all, Turned out that most probably the ext2 fs on the /boot partition was corrupted.Deletion of partition followed up by remaking with ext3 fs and restoration of kernel,init files and grub got rid of the error and everything is back to normal again. Regards, Easwar

Assume you are a service provider of some kind and your job is to find out the balances of each account of your client list. (or any other information). All the information pertaining to the IVR system and the client exists in a DB. Can an application be written such that it will dial in to the IVR and for the relevant clients (as determined by some other set of logic) in an automated way and extract the information needed after navigating through the menu on its own? mockbuild does not exist ???

HI All I am trying to install per-razor-agent on my postfixserver. With yum i am not able to install it cause it cant fid the packages. I tried with the rpm command ---- I ge the error "mockbuild does not exist" What does it mean. Please help with hardware RAID detection in Fedora 7

Hi, I have a Asus M2NPV-VM motherboard which supports hardware RAID. I have installed Fedora 7 on the first SATA hard disk (sda). Now I have added two more identical SATA hard disks and configured them as mirrored RAID in BIOS. In the OS I can still see them as sdb and sdc and not as one single disk. My vendor tells me that I have to reinstall the OS for it to detect the RAID disk. I do not want to reinstall as I have done lot of customization. Can any one please help me in configuring the RAID without reinstalling the OS. Any pointers would also be welcome. Thanks and regards. sadhu

hi all I am configuring postfix with mysql and postfix admin , i have creating a directory stucture to store all the domain name and user names ( eg :- /home/vmail/domain.com/user1/Maildir ) , but the thing is when i am creating the domain through postfixadmin it is only it is only creating it in the database. It dose'nt creat a actual physical location in the harddisk. Trivial Graphics programming using Svgalib and C (GCC)

List, I have created a How-to for using the Svgalib with C. Svgalib is a graphic library (low-level) that offers basic functions for graphics programming. In the past, I was trying to find out an alternative to writing C programs for graphics under any distribution. Under Windows, I used the Turbo C++ 3.0 compiler (IDE) using the graphics.h file which provided ample of functions for trivial graphics programming. When I discovered Svgalib, I found that I could do /almost/ everything that I did in Windows. Hi all, I had installed openSUSE 10.2 on my system a few days ago.SUSE was installed on 2 primary partitions hda3 and hda4 having mount points / and /usr respectively.hda1 is my Windows C:\ and hda2 is an extended partition containing 4 partitions for Ubuntu for the following: / hda7 5GB /home hda8 11GB /boot hda5 141MB swap hda6 1GB and Windows D:\ hda9 10GB I had shared my Ubuntu home partition with SUSE taking care that the login ids of the users on the systems were different so that my files on both the systems were not embroiled in a web of conflicting permissions by the 2 OSs. Since I didn't like openSUSE too much,I removed it the only way I knew,ie by deleting the partitions through Disk Management on Windows XP. Since GRUB was broken too,I reinstalled GRUB through Ubuntu 7.04 Live CD and edited the Ubuntu fstab and GRUB's menu.lst to reflect the renumbered partitions(I'm assuming they were renumbered by the deletion of the hda3 and hda4 partitions,that's what I can make out from the Live CD fdisk –l). Since then, Grub shows me error 17 and tells me it "Cannot mount the selected partition".I have gone through the Gentoo forums threads regarding this atleast 5 times and they couldn't help me. Also,I tried removing the UUIDs and replacing them with the partition numbers for the root field of the initrd row(of course after backing up).No go! I also tried successively replacing the root (hd0,X) with all the Linux partition numbers.Didn't work out.Since my root partition contains symlinks to the kernel,Grub showed me error 17 for that too but for the other partitions,it showed me error 15(File not found).Can someone help with this? Regards, Easwar PS:What's surprising is that Grub can boot windows but can't mount the partition it itself is on!Right now,my menu.lst contains the UUIDs and has root (hd0,4) which is my /boot partition(ext2,others are all ext3).

Hi all, I think it would be useful to add the lug mailing list archive search (http://www.glug-bom.org/Data/ObjectType/S/SearchArchives/viewObjectType) under 'Documentation' on the wiki front page as it can be useful to someone looking for help. However, I am not able to edit the wiki front page. What do I need to do to edit it?
