hi i have FC4 on Server and i am trying thinclient networking with using LTSP. I could put 4 computers on thin client. For one computer i am getting problem. It has 200Mhz CPU, 32MB RAM, Trident Display. It is booting properly through LAN. It gets IP from DHCP also. Everything works fine upto login screen. at login screen X server cant show display properly. And computer get struck. What should i do ? Please help... Neelesh

MTNL Triband

I just got the MTNL Triband installed on my IBM X40 running RHEL 4WS and it was a snap! Once the hardware was plugged in, all I did was go to the terminal, do a "service network restart" and I was online! The MTNL guy who came to set up my connection had never worked on Linux and said that if he had to set this up on Windows XP he would have to do a whole bunch of configuration. Hide headers with command line

I tride RET=full option while giving sender's id but even that is showing ip of mail server. is there any way i can hide complete header of my mail? [OT] Digital Certificates

back to the thread, two things first: 1. I work in TCS, but am not here to defend it 2. Starting this thread back only to solve the problems with digital certificates issued by TCS-CA (I once worked on the digital cerficates and related tools support for GNU/Linux here). We tested the digital certificates with Firefox and OpenSSL on GNU/Linux and they did work. While I have no information about what M$ windows tools and software are being distributed along with the USB token, but as far as I know all those tools also exist for GNU/Linux - atleast inside TCS ;) We normally associate the lack of awareness of issues like vendor lock-in and the philosophy of FOSS etc., with non-IT people. The sad truth is that even with the IT community, there are lots of people who are not aware of these issues - lots of them in big companies like TCS. The older have an excuse but there are a huge number of youngsters who are not aware too! Well, in my opinion (a) this is not something done intentionally and knowingly; at best it is ignorance, at worst it is succumbing to a perceived convenience (http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/0,2000061733,39168780,00.htm) and (b) as many people as possible should protest -- the objective is to raise awareness of the issue both in the user and the developer communities, not to blame or malign someone. will see if we can do anything about it, from inside! Firefox and Yahoo

Hello All, I happened to visit a yahoo groups site and in the photo album section I could only see blank squares instead of thumbnails. On clicking the photos I get an empty space that resembles the photo size but no photo in it. If I right click on the empty space and select 'view image', it opens a new page and then downloads the image. Same with thumbnails too. On Netscape in Windows, everything shows normally. I checked the page source and its mostly javascript which exists in Linux too so why this behaviour. If anyone else is on any yahoo group that gives album access then please try viewing the album in Firefox. 5.1 Sound cards under Alsa/Gentoo

Hi all: I have an Audiotrak Prodigy 5.1 LT Card ( known in the ALSA world as ICE1724 (Envy 24 HT/PT). The card has Front, Rear, BS(HP), CW and Digital out connectors for audio. I want to get 5.1 audio to work on Gentoo Linux 2006. Here's what I've configured on kernel 2.6.15: - Alsa enabled (nothing else in the alsa sub menu enabled) - Alsa drivers emerged (1.0.10) - Alsa 1.0.11 drivers installed separately after the 1.0.10 was unmerged. I get audio on only the Front and BS connectors. I don't get audio on the Rear or the CW connectors. I don't have any audio accessory capable of connecting to the digital audio connector. I am about to read the alsa-project site wiki. However, I'm new to 5.1 audio and have some newbit-class questions: 1. Does anyone have experience with using 5.1 or 7.1 sound cards under Linux ? 2. Are there are special settings that you need to do ? 3. Are there any special audio connectors ? 4. I have stereo and mono MP3 files that I wish to play via GStreamer and xmms. Digital Certificates

Hi Everyone, I attended a lecture at Indian Merchants Chambers yesterday on the new government rule called MCA-21. The new rule provides that all document sumbitted to the Ministry of Company Affaires now needs to be given in digital form only. They will no longer accept physical documents. Further, each of these documents will have to have a digital signature of the persons who were earlier required to sign the physical documents. This is the first step to moving all governement documents to digital form and save huge time and cost of users now wasted in standing in line and submitting documents to the government. The next will be Tax authorities, followed by Excise and Customs. Land Records are expected to be next thereafter. There are 7 companies in India who are authorised to issue digital certificates recorgnised under the Information Technology Act. TCS is one who was present at the seminar and demonstrated the use of the digital certificates. For those who have not used them, these are stored by TCS on USB Tokens, which look like USB Pen drives but are read-only 32KB drives with processors built in. You are supposed to insert in the token in the UCB port and then ask the Online-Form to pick up the digital certificate from the token and add it to the document to submit to the government. These certificates are based on 128 bit encryption and PKI. TCS assured me that it is designed to work both on Linux and Mac in addition to Windows and that they are including the relevant drivers with the token. However, the additional software tools they are providing for automating digital signatures on other documents will work only on Windows. I would like to know if any of you have used the Digital Siganture / Digital Certificates that is being issued under MCA-21 and can confirm that it works properly on Linux. The other providers of Digital Certificates includes MTNL. While TCS is charging Rs. 2075 for a 1 year valid certificate, MTNL is charging Rs. 350. They are sending it to you on email !! Ofcourse, they are doing this only at Malabar Hill Exchange and you have to go personally to their office and they will verify that you are the person whose name is on the form and your address, photo, etc. I do not know much on Digital Certificates. However with this becoming a major part of commercial and business transactions, I hope what the government is doing does not work only on Windows. If necessary, we (or perhaps FSF) will need to initiate a dialog with the government. In the next year, it is estimated that just government requirment will result in over 1 million digital certificates being issued. I think the actual figure will be close to 5 million as more government depatments like Income Tax, Sales Tax, Excise and Customs departments move to "digital documents only" mode. (Just imagine - if every shop keeper needs to file his sales tax returns online and needs a digital certificate to be able to upload the return to the government). It would be very important for us to ensure that Linux gets supported in the process. Regards Saswata

Hi, The best solution is to use Synaptic. Synaptic was originally meant to be a front end for apt-get on Debian based systems. I saw it first in Ubuntu. However it has been ported for RPM based distributions too. Atleast I had used it myself, with great satisfaction in Fodera Core 2, although I have not tried it out on Fedora Core 5 yet. However I read that support for apt-get would be removed in later releases of Fedora Core. You can get the Fedora Core 5 RPM at http://atrpms.net/dist/fc5/synaptic/. If anybody wants I have the tarball too, and can mail it to you individually. Hope it helped, Debarshi

[OT] OSS Idea.

Hello All, This is with reference to the earlier discussions on OSS philosophy and I have started a new thread for an idea to promote OSS production in India. For the discussion, free OSS here will be refered to as free (as in freedom) software. Free software is generally looked upon as a conmmunity effort with little monetory gains for the programmer himself. Those who install and setup systems make money on the installation but the programmer may generally get little. Most of the training institutes too train students on the commercial closed source platforms as thats where they make most money. Free software creation is still not very popular in India due to lesser econimic gains for the programmer. IMHO, free software can commercially sustain itself only if its creation is sponsored in a way thats equivalent to what commercial software creation gets. This sponsorship can come directly from corporates and every other imaginable commercial establishments that make use of computers. Now the question that comes up is why will they sponsor free software creation? What do they get or benefit in return for their huge donations? As an incentive, the donors can be provided free tech support right from installation to maintainence in a limitted way and relative to the amount of donation. The incentives can also include free writing of drivers for special needs. The programmers are paid market rates for writing the softwares and the industry and commerce benefits by getting free ( as in beer and freedom ) software thats stable, secure and robust. This software can be posted on websites for anyone and everyone to freely download and use. No one will ever have to use commercial or pirated software and once the platform gains popularity, even institutes will offer courses on oss platform. The commercial software makers too will be forced to create software for open free data formats. Device makers too will have to provide drivers for the oss platform. As a heavily populated country, our industry is huge and very diverse and even a few thousand rupees from the majority can be enough to sustain foss growth. In return, they cut down their heavy software expenditure. The FSF India or such organisations can set guidelines for creating and running this model so that there are minimum trouble areas and the system runs smoothly. We accepted non-free licenses because we wanted to give voice to people writing software and sharing source code who did so for reasons other than moral freedom. Is it wrong to accept works that strive for technical excellence independent of social agendas? As a scientist and an engineer (BS CSE, University of Pennsylvania 1986) I have to say no: the scientific method is, and must be independent from all moral frameworks. Does this make science immoral or amoral? Certainly there are those who apply or ignore science in immoral ways. But science itself is concerned with evidence and falsification, not morals. Open Source allows for software to be independent from freedom, while at the same time offering the kind of freedom that comes from independence. My personal preference, which has not changed in nearly 20 years, is the GNU General Public License. I like it for personal reasons. I like it for social reasons. I think it's a great license for protecting legitimate business interests. But I don't like it enough to use it as a battering ram against all other possible licensing models. And I think that the Open Source Initiative has helped to foster a far richer software environment by creating a larger tent in which more developers can experiment with and find their own best licensing models and software projects. Problem X-server in LTSP

Hi I have FC-4 Server. I have done thinclient network for three PCs. I have problem with monitor resolution. Clients boot from network and it comes to login screen. But X display gets flickr on some b/w monitors. Display gets ok on color monitor but we cannot use color monitor as we dont have it. I think coz of monitor refres rate it is happening. Some b/w monitors give display ok. Resolution is 800x600. 1. How can i define resolution and monitor refresh rate for thin clients in LTSP ? please reply neelesh

Using ELinks access HTTPS sites.

Hi, I was trying to use ELinks (ver 0.11) on Fedora Core 5 system to browse the Web. However I am encountering a problem whenever I try to access sites which use SSL and HTTPS. eg., I can not log into GMail although the http://mail.google.com/mail comes up. Similarly I can not log into Yahoo Mail, Savannah, etc.. The error window that pops out reads something like: "Unable to retrieve proxy://172.16.20.2:3128/https://login.yahoo.com/config/login?... SSL Error" I am behind a SQUID proxy (172.16.20.2:3128), I have set the HTTP, HTTPS, FTP proxy:port using the ELinks options menu item. However does not seem to have any problem dealing with the above site. However I like ELinks' rendering of web pages and hence would like to use it more than Lynx. Any ideas? Hello: For a project that I'm working on, I require that the customer's computer be accessible over the Internet. Using dyndns, I'm able to allow inward HTTP and SSH connections. However, the IP address allocated to my DSL router is a public IP address. I assume that if my ISP providing my DSL service were to also place me behind a NAT (allocate me a private IP address), then I'd have to rule out inward connections. So, is my understanding correct ? Hi guys, I just came across a slashdot article ( http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/04/17/124244 ) which said that the user base of IBM Lenovo laptops is falling just because they are now being manufactured/owned by the Chinese. I just want to get your opinions. Some say that the quality has indeed deteriorated while others say its just psychological. Many feel that these people are just plain biased while some say that the Chinese are less accountable than their american counter parts. Personally, I am not biased against the Chinese but Chinese goods tend to have the "cheap" feel to them and I think that they have definitely lowered the quality and have cut costs at the same time while trying to improve their margins. Hello All, Postfix, mutt and fetchmail are now up and running. Is there any way I can copy a url within a message in mutt in one terminal and paste it in the go option ( go to url) in lynx opened in the second terminal? How do I secure my fetchmailrc? cpio archive size limit.

Hi. I created a cpio archive of my / directory, excluding unwanted directories like /proc, /tmp, and /dev called fullbackup.cpio. The size of the archvie is 5.1 GB. Now when I try to extract or list the contents of this cpio archive, I get the following error. [root@appsdms /]# cpio -itv < fullbackup.cpio cpio: standard input is closed: Value too large for defined data type Is there a limit for the size that a cpio archive can have? My filesystem is ext3 (RHEL AS3). I wanted to backup this data to tape, and wanted to test it by saving it to my hard disk first. Googling for the exact error didn't help apart from mentioning some 2GB file size limit for ext3 (??) Regards, NMK.

configuring the lirc receiver

( referring to the last ilug talk on lirc) i have a creative infra cdrom drive with it's remote too. I went about installing lirc , put the creative infra remote specs in the lircd.conf file etc. After starting lircd , the daemon , when i try to connect to the device by running irw (say) the lirc daemon stops. i checked /var/log/lircd ( i run Debian Sarge kernel 2.4.27) i got this lircd: lircd(creative_infracd) ready lircd: registering local client lircd: accepted new client on /dev/lircd lircd: Creative iNFRA driver: begin search for device lircd: Probing: open of /dev/sga failed and so on.... it repeats the last line till /dev/sgy is it because the receiver is not properly configured ? i remember Rajiv using /dev/sg1 as the device (scsi) . How do i configure the creative infra cdrom drive as a receiver ? sharan --

Hi, My H/W vendor recommended MSI RS480/RS482 motheboard with AMD-64 for me. But I have a few doubts about its Linux compatibility. Hi. How do I determine the number of physical processors installed on my server from within the OS? I used to trust /proc/cpuinfo till I came across a Xeon box which had four physical CPUs, but /proc/cpuinfo reported eight. Talk of multithreading! Surely there must be a way to find the correct number of physical CPUs? Something like.. No of CPUs: 8 ( 4 Physical ) Regards, NMK.

Posgresql help

Hi All, I have installed posgresql 8.1 database in my system(RHEL3) . It was installed perfectly and i also compiled it with gmake and gmake install later. i added user posgres for creating database and made him owner of /usr/local/pgsql directory . I created a db called db1 with initdb -D and createdb command and all the datas were located at /usr/local/pgsql/data .but when i tried to create a user or start teh database with psql .. it throws an error saying server is not running locally.. three questions 1) what port does posgresql listen? 2) What services i need to start? 3) Later how do i integrate with apache in future. Which sharedlibrarly do i need for that? Rgds AK

We are going to create a mesh network of about half a dozen access points on 15th April at HBCSE campus with the help of Fred Pook, a Netherlands based hacker/enterpruener who works in the suburbs in Goa. If any of you are intersted to join in this hands-on workshop please come to HBCSE on 15th about 10am. It is a day long workshop. We expect to finish making the mesh by evening. The bank was looking for a robust platform that could guarantee it "high availability of services and uninterrupted call traffic". It had options but finally decided on Linux for its core business applications. "Today, we are really happy with Linux that has delivered 99.99 per cent uptime so far," says Pritesh Thaker, AVP, IT, UTI Bank. The bank, in fact, is now planning to base its credit card-based system on Linux too. UTI is not the lone player to swear by Linux. Eveready, a leading manufacturer of dry cell batteries and flashlights in India, has built a mission-critical resource system to automate all functionalities of its daily business using the Oracle e-business suite running on a Linux platform. Central Bank of India has implemented Linux in nearly 3000 branches. The Penguin (official mascot of Linux), it appears, has finally marched into enterprises like IDBI Bank, Canara Bank, New India Assurance, LIC, BSNL, IRCTC, ABN Amro, Airtel and even the governments of Maharashtra and West Bengal. The list, of course, is not exhaustive. In most cases, though, the implementation of Linux in Indian enterprises is by Red Hat (primarily since Red Hat Linux has been popularised by the media and offers support for Linux which, being open source, can be downloaded for free and has no upfront licensing fee). Otherwise, one can choose from the hundreds of other Linux distributions - Mandriva, Debian, Suse, PCLinuxOS, Knoppix and Ubuntu to name a few - for desktops and enterprises. "All verticals are ready for Linux adoption today. However the banking, financial and insurance services (BFSI) and government markets have been pioneers of sorts in adopting Linux. The retail segment is also gaining ground quickly, along with verticals ranging from telecommunications to media and entertainment. "In India, we are increasingly seeing corporates running ERPs and mission-critical applications on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform. Large databases and blade servers are being powered by Linux to run online share trading and lottery applications," says Javed Tapia, CEO, Red Hat. The Indiabulls group is a case in point. Indiabulls runs its Internet trading platform - Oracle 9i - on Linux. This system, which handles 40-45 per cent of Indiabulls' revenue transactions - nearly 10,000 customers are online at any point of time and transactions are in the range of Rs 1000 crore (Rs 10 billion) - runs on Linux. The online share trading infrastructure at Indiabulls generates close to 150000 database queries per minute. "Linux has become prettly stable. We never considered Windows because of the perception that it has a lot of vulnerabilities. Hence, we adopted the Linux route and are satisfied with the results," says Tejinderpal Singh Miglani, CTO, Indiabulls. IDBI's Sanjay Sharma, Head IT, corroborates this view. IDBI has been using an Oracle HR management and financial accounting system, which runs on Linux. From Sharma's perspective, this is a "mission-critical" application. "We did evaluate options like Unix and Windows too. However, we did not want to be tied up to resource-hungry applications and any particular vendor. Besides, you hardly have a problem of viruses with Linux," he says. Linux, indeed, is doing reasonably good business. IBM's business built around Linux, for instance, was worth $16 billion last year and is projected to be worth more than $50 billion, says the company's global head of public sector Linux sales, Mary Ann Fisher, who recently spoke at LinuxWorld, Australia. She added: "Governments worldwide are spending more than $3 billion a year on Linux hardware, software and services, and this is growing at 35 per cent a year. But it's the US military that is spending the most." "Mission-critical" debate Now, mission-critical applications, among other things, need servers. And for the first time, the server market in India is expected to cross the 100,000-unit mark in 2006. Servers are powerful networked machines for tasks such as handling e-mail, financial transactions, airline reservations and file storage. Based on the price, vendors classify servers as small (anywhere from Rs 40000 up to Rs 500,000), medium (from Rs 500,000 to Rs 1 crore) and large (over Rs 1 crore). They are identified as Intel (or X86 processor-based), Unix (or non-X86 processor-based) and Blade servers. Linux and Solaris are flavours of Unix. Windows and Intel form the loosely-termed "Wintel" brand. Back in 2000, India was primarily a Unix market in the enterprise. With the entry of certified and supported Linux solutions, Unix users in India found Linux an attractive proposition to migrate to. IDC has consistently reported Linux as the fastest growing OS in the world and predicts that the overall market revenue for Linux will exceed $35 billion by 2008. Globally, Windows narrowly overtook Unix in 2005 to claim the top spot in server sales for the first time, according to IDC. Computer makers sold $17.7 billion worth of Windows servers worldwide in 2005 compared with $17.5 billion in Unix servers. Linux came third. The Unix market, though, is still huge. Sun is trying to restore Unix fortunes as well by making Solaris an open-source project and bringing it to the x86 servers. The battle for Unix customers (traditionally, the server King) is not new, with IBM, HP and Red Hat all pushing Unix-to-Linux migration plans. This definitely has hurt Sun's profitability. Sun, in turn, released Solaris 10 last year as a free download (it has close to 5 million downloads). Praveen Sawkar, country manager, Solaris, Sun Microsystems India, admits that "Linux has gained some traction in the x86 server space and has managed to break Wintel combination's stronghold on this segment of the market". However, he adds, that most mission-critical applications in the world "continue to be deployed, almost without exception, on the SPARC platform". He opines it will be a long time before the industry will start basing their mission-critical applications on Linux. "In the BFSI industry, one of the largest users of mission-critical applications, Linux is used for end-user banking, algorithmic and analytical work (derivative analysis and risk portfolio assessment). It is yet to be used in core banking environments, something that can be classified as being mission-critical," asserts Sawkar. Microsoft concurs with this view. Sanjiv Mathur, director (customer and partner experience), Microsoft Corporation India, notes that according to IDC, 42.3 per cent of mission-critical applications worldwide run on Windows server platform. "With a 69.5 per cent market share, Microsoft has a strong foothold across all verticals including BFSI and government. Linux has a much smaller share of the market, which is limited to specific areas of high-performance computing and other workloads like security and edge servers, which have traditionally been on the Unix platform. So this whole perception of Linux posing a threat to Microsoft does not hold true. Linux growth is more from the re-platforming of Unix," he adds. Frost and Sullivan (India) - director ICT, Alok Shende, too, appears to be in agreement. "Linux is definitely getting into the enterprise. However, enterprises today need end-to-end solutions. Second, the price of the OS is a small part of the end-to-end solution. People should look at the total cost of ownership, which included long-term costs like services and people availability. Linux has to create a whole market around the product. While it has matured as a technology, it is wanting from a business perspective. And that will take some time," he opines. However, there are major companies that stand aggressively by Linux. Sandeep Menon, director, Linux Business, Novell West Asia, opines that Linux is increasingly being used as a platform of choice for mission-critical applications. "Several mainframes and super computers are running Linux. Linux is also been embedded in routers and telecom equipment. It is used by some of the largest banks, airlines and Internet engines in the World. What else can be more critical?" he asks. He adds that with proprietary software, the customer is totally at the mercy of vendor. If the vendor discontinues support for any reason, the customer can't do anything. In the case of Open Source Linux, even if the vendor stops support, the customer can go to anyone else for support or even support it using his/her own resources, given that the source code will be available. Ashutosh Dhanesha, country manager, Linux Business, IBM India, concurs: "Linux gives customers choice. Our philosophy on "Freedom of choice" for software, hardware and services and leadership in industry standards provides customers with security, flexibility and control of their IT infrastructure and applications. We see Linux moving to mission-critical applications such as ERP and even high end applications such as Seismic data analysis." "Linux is the most proactive as far as security is concerned. With a million eyeballs looking continuously at the code, bugs are fixed faster than they can be exploited. As opposed to a licensing approach that proprietary platforms follow, we sell subscriptions, wherein customers are automatically covered for upgrades and updates," says Tapia. Experts opine there is a Rs 600-crore (Rs 6 billion) market for open source software which is growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 35-40 per cent. A sharp rise in enterprise-wide adoption of Linux or Open Source is one of the primary reasons for this optimism. Gartner predicts that by 2008, 95 per cent of Global 2000 organisations will have formal open-source acquisition and management strategies. The Penguin, it appears, will give its competitors an icy path to walk on. Penguin facts * Linux is expected to have a 15 per cent share of the ERP market by 2007 (Peerstone Research) * 55 per cent of all companies deployed Linux by the end of 2005 (AMR Research) * There are over 1.2 million developers with Linux skills (Evans Data Corp) * IBM has more than 7000 services professionals working with Linux * Robert Francis Group (IBM-sponsored research) found security levels in Linux generally exceeded those in Windows, providing a more secure and manageable environment out of the box with significantly more functionality in terms of security integration and management * The Linux kernel programming code is better and more secure than the programming code of most proprietary software - based on a four-year analysis of the 5.7 million lines of Linux source code conducted by five Stanford University researchers

dd usage problem

Hello All, From the net I found a command to copy a cd into an iso file. dd if=/dev/cdrom of=file.iso This has to be given to an unmounted disc. However I got a series of continuous errors when running the command and the operation failed. What could have gone wrong? I am currently pursuing my T. Y. BSc. (I. T.) and much of what I have in my curriculum is pretty much using applications that work in Windoze! Considering the professionals in this list, can the software industry, especially, those who provide services in the open source areas using GNU/Linux, initiate certain programmes or take some steps to be a part of the curriculum developement team of courses which provide education about software development for University of Mumbai? I agree, this is not easy and needs the consensus of both the university and the industry, but someone would have to initiate it. Or students like me should put this request in the form of a letter to the university? We (BSc I. T.) have learnt about UNIX Operating system's basic commands in one of our semesters which actually inclined me towards using GNU/Linux as a mainstream OS. Dialup connectivity additionally

Hi I have braod band connectivity and gives very good speed. But for the last 2 to 3 months I have been experiencing problems with the same. It is sometimes not available for 10 days in a month. This hampers day to day work. I am planning a dialup internet connection as backup as i can atleast do normal routine work like cheking mails,accessing bank accounts etc. I want some wireless phone I was planning on Tata Indicom. PCQLinux GPL violation issue...

Hello all, And here we have it from the horse's mouth: http://forums.pcquest.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4523 The editor of PCQ has responded that they have _not_ violated the GNU GPL as they have modified only anaconda and the init scripts of FC4. _I'm stumped_ :O How in the world have they "remastered" an entire distro without modifying anything other than anaconda and the init scripts? They claim to have distributed the sources of anaconda along with PCQLinux 2006. I believe them. If thats the case then I am shocked as to how can someone: 1. FUBAR hardware detection 2. Introduce a whole lotta bugs 3. Break packages by simply editing anaconda and the init scripts...? Wow if it's really true then I am speechless. ms guys are really good at what they do :O And the threats galore. Now they think someone opening their mouth is defamation... >_< -- Dinesh A. Joshi

HylaFax Successfully Installed

Hello All, I had installed the hylafax packages through 'adept' in Kubuntu 5.10 but never configured them. Finally I decided and google showed up useful links for the setup. The first one is the server configuration given here http://www.aboutdebian.com/fax.htm The server setup smoothly and using 'kdeprintfax', I was able to send messages to my fax machine. However I was looking for a fax printer that would be a part of my printer list when giving the print command. So this link looked promising http://xtronics.com/reference/Debian-print2hylafax.htm After a lot of haggling and bargaining with different qt3 libs, I finally managed to get 'faxfrontend' up and running only to discover that its similar to kdeprintfax. Both of these are separate utilities that need the file to be selected and then its sent. However I am still looking for that elusive fax printer that can be selected from the print menu. The Kubuntu 5.10 'System Settings' does have a printer setup with a 'print to fax printer' but its settings are blank. Any clues on how to link the fax applications with that fax printer? Hi. I've been trying to install RHEL 3 on an IBM x346. I needed an img file to load at install time for my Adaptec hostraid controller. The file is present at the IBM site, but the size is greater than 1.44 MB. The size is 1.47 MB and cannot fit into a floppy (which I would put into the drive for the "linux dd" comand to work.) Has anyone else encountered this problem, as I see that lots of img files are greater than 1.44 MB? Regards, NMK.

PCQ Linux 2006 Lousy.

Hello All, The PCQ Linux 2006 writeup in the mag was quite impressive so I tried it out. First of all, the CD media is terrible, it has many file errors. First time, in CD1 itself it had some file errors. On inserting CD2, it simply went into CLI and said the system was ready to reboot. Next time it was another 'dhakka maro' session of opening and closing the cd (Sony DVD) tray but it finally installed. It is supposed to be FC4 packages based but it is a disgrace to the existing FC4. It could not go beyond 800x600 resolution. It did not detect the sound devices (Both these things worked fine in FC4). The Firefox setup in Kde showed weird behavior. It would not allow me to check/uncheck boxes and as I moved my mouse over it the tick marks would randomly appear and disappear. Finally I just chucked it. After almost a year of FC4 and Ubuntu 5.10, if PCQ comes up with such crap, it will only sabotage the FOSS cause. Hello All, I downloaded the file 'puppy-1.0.8r1-mozilla.iso' from http://www.puppylinux.org/user/downloads.php?cat_id=1and burned it into a CD. It is an amazing and cute distro that surprisingly detected my display, sound as well as my usb pen drive. [P4 2.66, Intel 845 GEBV2, 256 Mb RAM, 80 GB HDD] It has a very nice looking desktop giving all the useful icons with their functional names in text. It is very useful for home users who want a simple straightforward system with a good foundation. It has 5 boot options and initially I selected option 4 (RAM only). When you boot into it, it asks you to confirm your hardware and gives options for sound along with a test sound to know everything is up. Display settings come in different combinations and I used 1024x768x24. Thats something very handy. The best part of this live cd is that it can be installed into a pen drive or hard drive. It has these options in the live cd itself so no messing around with command line codes. . It can be installed on a seperate partition and uses ext2 as the fs. This os is useful to give to family members who want a simple and easy os and their usage will not mess with the existing distros. It works only as root so it will be equivalent to Win 98 or Win Me. It has a firewall setup too so that closes all your ports from outside. Applications wise, it has everything one can imagine in an standard OS. Its media player could directly play vcds with proper video and sound. The trancend flash drive was detected and usable too. It can mount ntfs partitions in read only mode. Some points to note while installation:- 1. Don't install the grub boot loader if you already have grub distros installed, add the entries to your existing grub later. 2. Due to that, it does not install the image file in the hdd. It only saves the vmlinuz file in the /boot folder. Therefore, the file 'image.gz' will have to be manually copied to that /boot folder. For the newbies, here is that part of menu.lst in grub that was added later to the existing distro. Partition numbers will vary. # linux installation on /dev/hda12. title PUPPY LINUX 1.0.8 (on /dev/hda12) root (hd0,11) kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda12 initrd /boot/image.gz savedefault boot 3. The sound did not load during hdd bootup so I booted the live cd again and selected the option to ask for the partition. There I pointed to my partition and the pup001 configuration was saved there. After the live bootup with sound working, I booted through the HDD and sound was up. This distro should be ideal for home users, old pc users ( not tried it out) and people scared of using computers. Got a chance to catch linux world sydney. Thought id sent across some interesting observations. Indicators of the future... (desktop related features) Saw Ubuntu Beta of the new Dapper Drake scheduled (delayed a bit) for May/June. The new XGL interfaces ..... http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=401&num=1 One word. WOW. Pictures do not do Justice. Seen an average comp. with an average display card do some pretty amazing effects. novell desktop also scheduled for June also comes with XGL. Same really cool desktop features. http://www.novell.com/linux/xglrelease/ apparently there is something called "aglx" which the FC team have been working on, which gives the same features... it doesnt come with FC5, but can be put on as I was promised. But did not get a chance to see it yet. for the adventurous, its in extras I believe somewhere... Gnome 2.6.14 is FAST. Real FAST. Got a chance to met with a few developers, think of this, gnome 2.8 on debian. thats right Debian! uses more than 120-130 mb (64bit port), 2.6.14 takes 80M. (seen this on my own piece, so i can vouch for it.) in short, future looking good. More WOW factor. Better hardware support. regards Erle

BlankIs there any way to control the Zenega CD-1005S (supplied by DishTV) through the serial connection using a PC. Actually, all I want to do is to be able to change the channel so I can record a program on my PVR. Call for Developers for the CSLinux project

Dear Linux hackers, As you may be aware, we, the Computer Science Linux User's Group, are attempting to make our own re-branded distribution of Linux based on Fedora Core 5. This distribution is aimed at having a customised set of packages that we need in our BCS/MCS/BE/ME/MCA/Diploma syllabus so that one set of three or four CDs can be moved around without carring peripheral CDs for Java, plugins, multimedia, etc. Moreover, we were mailed regularly by people that they had trouble setting up Postgres, PHP, tomcat, Perl, JDBC, etc. during their time of critical needs. It is definately not fair to expect people to learn how to configure these things at the last moment when practicals are declared within a week. Even if someone is capable of configuring these, it is likely that they may forget at the last moment and also likely that people wont want to spend time configuring stuff on the day previous to the exam at the cost of studying. For this purpose, we also aim to provide pre-configured RPMs and configuration scripts that can achieve this task within a few minutes. In fact, CSLinux version 1 released last year allowed even first year students to set up many things that TYs were having trouble with. This version will be aimed at pushing this simplicity and ease-of-use to the next level. With GUIs, web-based tools for remote management of nodes in labs, configuration replication scripts for applying common settings to multiple laboratory nodes, user management scripts for handling the thousads of users on college servers, etc. For more information on what's been going on in regard to CSLinux, you are encouraged to join the CSLUG group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cslug and go through the archives http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cslug/message . We have also started a Wiki seedwiki.com/wiki/computer_science_linux_users_group/ for simplifying this effort and the link to it can be found in he CSLUG archives. We request your participation, support and encouragement in this effort. Please do spread the word around. We need all sorts of people to help us out. We need graphics designers to design the themes, logos, images, wallpapers, bootscreens, etc. for CSLinux. We require people to modify the installer Anaconda. We need people to modify RPM files and change the default configuration in them. We need people to make and build binary RPMs out of source tarballs for packages whose RPMs that may not already be available or when i686 RPMs may not be available. We also need developers to develop the configuration scripts, the small tools that we will provide with CSLinux and changing initscripts. Finally and most importantly, we also require the BCS/MCS/BE/ME/MCA/Diploma community to contribute their academic projects to be put up on CSLinux. This is to encourage students to make professional-grade real-life applicable projects by providing them a large exposure within the peer community. Also, we need people to search for sponsors. For example, we may approach coaching classes to sponsor the project in return for putting up their ads/banners on our default wallpaper, the GNOME/KDE splash screens, the default gdm login logo, and the CD covers and the prints on the CD themselves. Absolutely any help will be appreciated a lot. We would like CSLinux to become a living example of an open source project that is self-sustaining, started off by students on their own, and a successful business model within Pune (although it will be strictly not-for-profit). If you feel that you have completed any assignment from BCS/MCS/BE/ME/MCA/Diploma to perfection and would like the community to see it, then we will also be including such assignments for reference on the distribution. This is a very highly-demanded feature by many. Your contribution on recommendations to what tools, packages and documents that should be included in CSL would be highly appreciated. Email Archival & some general advice

Hello everyone, Thanks once again for coming forward to help me with the copying of messages in at the smtp gateway, using synonym or postfix configuration settings. I hav a few more things to ask u guys : 1) How can i use MySQL in a shell script? I wanna enter some values in some tables in MySQl through the shell prompt only. I need to enter these values, at the shell prompt, using the username and password, without entering the sql prompt explicitly, is this possible? is there any one line command like e.g in ncftp, where i can specify the username, password, the values etc, all in the smae command line? 2)CAn u guys specify me some place where i can find some detailed info on Synonym and its working,?? the documentation on its homepage is pathetic for a new user like me. 3)Is there any method, on Linux, with which i can index a text or mail message on the basis of keywords? actually i think, indexing email messages on basis of keywords would be a very helpful feature to use at the time of retrieval and so i want to include it in my solution, although i have tested MAIRIX, but all it does is, take an mbox, index it and create a data base file, and when u ask it to search, it gives out the messages which contain the keyword used as a basis of search. 4)How do u people know so much about so many things? CAn u describe ur strategy , where u get all this info and how do u remember it for extended periods of time? So, many questions in one mail, i fear, someone of u will surely flame out on me, but please try to understand, i myself am taking my first steps into this wonderful world of Unix/Linux and am finding out a lot o new things, just recently i read Maurice.J.Bach about Unix internals and i wanna start on Linux kernel now, and i hope in a few months, i will also be helping some of the guys her in my own small way. hello friends, i apologize again for asking a question again to this group rather than solving someone's problems. Its bcoz i hav too little experience compared to u guys, in terms of programming, exposure and knowledge about linux. i request u people to help me out in one small matter yet again. I am developing a mail archival system and due to suggestions of many people in the company i am working for(its a student project), we all hav decided to change our design thoroughly. Since one of the foremost task for a mail archival system is tocomply to regulatory requirements, which mostly are to store each and every email that is recieved by the company, we hav thought about an idea, of copying the email as soon as it enters the mail server, but before it gets stored in the personal mailbox of the user. The idea is to install our own software agent at the SMTP gateway to grab the mail before our MTA does and then copy the mail and then send one copy for archival and hand over the original mail message to the MTA. This way the MTA recieves the mail normally, while it is archived also. I apologize for sending such a big mail, but I also want u ppl to suggest how could i explain this problem statement in short or somewhere else. I need u guys to help me in the nuances of netiquette for using mailing lists like this. Help with building SpiderMonkey JS engine

Hi all, I'm currently working on a project involving the integration of the SpiderMonkey JS engine with an Apache module I've made. I'm using Debian sarge currently. I have installed the package libsmjs-dev to get the JS API. Unfortunately, whenever I try to compile even the sample code, it gives me a whole lot of errors in the library files. The first error it gives is /usr/include/smjs/jstypes.h:224:6: #error "Must define one of XP_BEOS, XP_MAC, XP_OS2, XP_WIN or XP_UNIX" I figure this is due to the fact that I've not built the JS engine. Does anybody know how to build the JS engine given the packages in Debian, or even any other method? USB drive: size mismatch

I have an iball 256mb usb drive. I had previously installed slax on it and now want to install a later version. But when i formatted the drive with both fdisk and cfdisk they had both created 253mb partitions called sda1. But whenever i mount it df -ha shows that the partition is only 179mb. I have tried rebooting the computer since fdisk said the table would be read on next reboot but it fails. *Minutes of Mark Shuttleworth's talk at IIT-Bombay* The GNU/Linux Users Group of Mumbai held an additional GLUG meet in january at KReSIT, IIT-Bombay. Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth interacted with the GLUG members and shared his views and ideas regarding ``Free Software'' and how it made a perfect business sense. This talk was attended by about 60 people coming from all over the country. Falling short of time, Mark Shuttleworth quickly talked about the following points, apart from answering questions. * Community and its background: Before starting his talk, Mark was eager to know about the Mumbai's GLUG community, its background.. since every GLUG is unique in its own respect. He then talked about his own background and about his ventures. * Ubuntu Organisation Structure: Mark talked about how ubuntu project started and what its goals are, how Ubuntu project is different from Debian yet how both still manage to collaborate with each other, how latest packages are adopted from upstream to make Ubuntu's archives always fresh. * Business Sense: Quoting Mark's own words, ``... knowledge and software are copyable. Their value or quality does not decrease when it is shared..'' According to him, this makes a perfect business sense. Ubuntu project, and all the best things that they produce, will always remain freely accessible to the entire community, individuals or large companies alike. Canonical is in a self sustaining business since it provides software services to organisations which are willing to hire them. Canonical has tied up with LPI and plans to start certification programs for Ubuntu professionals. * Free CD distribution: Mark answered several questions related to free software distribution and the rationale behind it. There are several parts of world where internet access is extremely costly. Free CDs therefore have an important role to play. Some questions were asked about the free CDs that Canonical ships worldwide and how some people tend to misuse the resources. Mark then recalled an incident wherein a `gentoo' fanatic tried to drain out Canonical's money by ordering 500 CDs. * Dapper Drake Preview: Mark gave a brief idea about the upcoming ubuntu release codenamed `Dapper Drake' and why it is going to have a 3 year(desktop)/5 year(server) support cycle and security updates. Dapper is also a distribution which is going to be certified by third party application providers like IBM. Starting from Dapper release, users will have the luxury of a GUI installation program and a single CD which acts as both live and installable. * Freedom Toaster etc. Answering a question related to Freedom Toaster, Mark explained the entire concept behind it and how the whole idea came into a reality during a brainstorming session. We couldn't talk about his space travel however due to lack of time. - tea break Mark personally autographed on Ubuntu CDs and stickers and posed for group photos. [INFO] NTFS in Linux

Hello All, Recently switched over to ntfs in windows just to explore its security level and was quite impressed by its similarity to linux. It gives only r-x access to the windows dir to unpreviledged users, so the chances of a virus writing itself to the c:\windows\ or c:\windows\system32\ folders is practically eliminated. One user cannot view the other's documents. The next issue was mounting the ntfs partition in linux. It got mounted easily without any hassles ( Kubuntu 5.10 ) but it was read only. No amount of tweaking the mount defaults changed it. Then I found this utility that I installed and now I am able to mount as well as write to the ntfs partition even as a user by simply replacing the file system type in fstab from 'ntfs' to 'captive-ntfs'. http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/ Regards, Rony. ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Hello All, After months of singing praises of Linux, finally I got the customer to try it out. It was on an existing M$ system that had been running since its installation for 4 years. It had survived some power breaks in the past and was running smoothly. In order to avoid touching his data, I loaded Kubuntu 5.10 on the fourth partition of the hdd. During installation in progress it did show a couple of error messages that some files ( That looked like M$'s system restore files ) were reporting different block sizes and I chose the option ignore as I had already cleaned his last partition. The installation went smoothly and I was able to boot into Linux as well as M$ a couple of times and even backed up the last drop of his data after that. Then I went on to demonstrate the bootup screen and how to choose between the system and the system was booted into linux. It got stuck at kernel panic. After a forced reset, the bios gave an error for the hdd. Instead of the entire text of the hdd label like 'Samsung ......', it only showed a garbled 2 character text. After the next restart, it disappeared altogether and right now I am in a situation thats commonly known as 'la$@# lag gayey'. Since I am promoting linux free of cost, as a community propaganda, providing a free HDD along with linux is a bit expensive and I would like to know some things as mentioned below. 1) Can this HDD be reprogrammed or forced with a low level format? Right now the bios cannot even detect it. 2) Is there any software that detects the health of a HDD before it can be loaded with Linux? 3) What could have gone wrong in this case and what precautions do I need to take to avoid such mishaps in future? If it doesn't match, it increase the value of the variable "NM_CNT" by 1. VPN Website Browsing issue

Hi, I have setup up a VPN using poptop`s PPTP in linux server and using windows client. i am able to connect and surf the internet But some websites do not open Like the pages which has a redirection to different site does not works ex. are bnmg.com cars.in black.in The Iptables rules i am using is iptables -A FORWARD -i ppp0 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -o ppp0 -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE Why cant i browse redirected sites ? Hi, I installed ubuntu 5.10 on my system, but on doing a configuration setup i get " segmentation fault" ie after i enter the Server Address. Earlier it worked well on my FC4 setup. Peculiar problem with Xmms in Fedora-2

hello all, I have got a peculiar problem. Usually i work in gnome,and there only i listen to songs and movies in xmms and mplayer. Oneday,i went to kde and tried playing songs in xmms there in kde..,but to my horror,it showed device not detected ,and souncard busy.Then again i came back to Gnome,and tried playing xmms,and to my surprise no sound was coming..!!!! ,but the song is seen to be played.in the xmms player..,ditto with mplayer too....But,in other OS,i.e Windows i face no problem. But since most of the times i work in Linux(Fedora 2),i prefer working and listening to songs in linux only.. But,after this problem,my life has become hell,and i dunno what to do.. Can,anyone suggest me what may the problem..??? I have checked volume control,it was not in mute..,and if sound-card not ready,then how come in the player song vl play..?? Hello, I just compiled kernel 2.6.15. I came across an option that I didn't have any knowledge about: Block Layer-> IO Schedulers-> < > Anticipatory I/O scheduler < > Deadline I/O scheduler < > CFQ I/O scheduler Default I/O scheduler (CFQ)-> ( ) Anticipatory ( ) Deadline ( ) CFQ ( ) No-op Here's what the help text in menuconfig says about the three options: Anticipatory: CONFIG_IOSCHED_AS: The anticipatory I/O scheduler is the default disk scheduler. It is generally a good choice for most environments, but is quite large and complex when compared to the deadline I/O scheduler, it can also be slower in some cases especially some database loads. Deadline: CONFIG_IOSCHED_DEADLINE: The deadline I/O scheduler is simple and compact, and is often as good as the anticipatory I/O scheduler, and in some database workloads, better. In the case of a single process performing I/O to a disk at any one time, its behaviour is almost identical to the anticipatory I/O scheduler and so is a good choice. CFQ: CONFIG_IOSCHED_CFQ: The CFQ I/O scheduler tries to distribute bandwidth equally among all processes in the system. It should provide a fair working environment, suitable for desktop systems. Hello All, 1) Kubuntu 5.10 in my system had a peculiar problem of the 'System Settings' package not giving sudo access for administrative settings ( After it did for the first few times just after installing the OS) . It was resolved by updating the 'kcontrol' package through the 'adept' package manager. 2) When my net is off and I start the system, it waits a pretty long time for synchronising the clock with the internet based clock inspite of the service being disabled in the services list. The temporary workaround for it is to press 'Ctrl C' as soon as it shows up on the startup screen. This will bypass the process and move on. Adept is a very good online shopping mall for free software for the Kubuntu 5.10 distro. Hi. I have two squids - one physically located at my data center and another with my ISP. My workstations are configured to use the squid at the datacenter. I wanted all cache misses at the data center to be redirected to my ISP's squid, so I added.. cache_peer proxy.myisp.net parent 8080 3130 (8080 = http_port and 3130 = default ICP port) ..to my squid.conf. I have two questions: 1. How do I verify that cache-misses are redirected to my ISPs proxy? 2. Is it possible to implement cache hierarcy if my ISPs proxy was not squid but winproxy, ms proxy, etc? [OT] Triband parallel phone woes

Hello all, Some of my customers expressed reluctance to go for triband as it would need a rewiring of the parallel phones through the splitter. Some existing ones too are using the service at half the speed and even frequent hangups due to parallel phones. They cannot rewire their offices. This gives me an idea that instead of rewiring the lines through the splitter, if we could add extra splitters at every phone point, then this should do the same job. Are these splitters available seperately or do they come with the modem only? Another option would be to copy the filter circuit. As I have only one working set, I don't have the heart to open it and tinker around but my guess is that it is a simple capacitor and inductor circuit. A series low impedence inductor with the phone output will allow low frequencey phone signals to pass and offer high resistance to the high freq. adsl signals. A low capacitance series capacitor with the adsl output will allow high freq. adsl sigs. but block the low freq. phone signals. So if we can get the value of the series inductance for the phone output, we can buy it from the market and connect it in series with all the parallel phones and thus avoid rewiring. Hi, I just got myself a new keyboard and after buying and installing it, I noticed to my dismay that it doesn't sport an "INSERT" key =( Now the problem is that I'm used to using the "SHIFT + INS" pasting shortcut in Konsole. I know this sounds stupid but would anyone know of any alternate method for pasting using only the keyboard ? Also, if there's any way that I can change the SHIFT + INS shortcut for pasting in Konsole. I tried using the ALT+E key to show me the "Edit" menu but it wouldn't work. Linux Drivers

Hello All, A few days ago I got a chance to get my hands on an IBM server machine for linux experimentation. It was at my friend's workshop and he wanted to load RedHat. As I had RHEL 3 WS, I loaded it with 'All' as the packages option. Unfortunately it did not detect the network card. The IBM driver cds contained linux source drivers that needed to be compiled. I did as per the instructions in the cd's readme file. however the make, make install happened but the final instructions were not clear and the process was a waste of a few hours. The reason for writing this mail is not to find out what went wrong but to suggest to the kernel writers that just like the Windows OS, Linux too could have a streamlined and simple method of installing device drivers. In Windows, there are 2 methods. 1) An executable file that is run and it does the entire pprocess of installing the driver files. 2) A set of ini and other files in a folder. The device manager or new device installation wizard asks for the location of the driver files and one has to simply point to the folderthat contains the driver files. Now Linux has evolved from a complicated command line system into a full scale gui system with easyto use interfaces that reduce installation time and effort. So it should not be difficult for kernel writers to incorporate a standard interface that automatically loads device drivers from source file folders ( the ones that are .tar.gz ). The other opption is to create rpm or deb files that will do the entire installation, but that will be too system specific and with too many distros, it may be difficult. evolution 2.4.0 starts and crashes (solved)

Last night I shutdown my workstation properly. This morning when I booted the system, evolution 2.4.0 (SuSE 10.0 x64) would display and then crash immediately. Logged out of my X session and re-logged in - same behaviour. Same behaviour manifested for a newly created userid as well, eliminating the possibility of some corrupt setting in my regular login. Refreshed the evolution related RPMs (rpm -h -U --replacepkgs ...) still no go. Finally, rebooted the system and logged in usign my regular userid and voila evolution works! To capture some debugging info, I started evolution from the CLI. I see the same initial warning messages in both cases. Any idea/suggestion what could have gone wrong with the first boot causing the problem is welcome so that I can look for it when it happens next. Is anyone out here using a biometric access control device? I'd reckon that the simplest/most popular ones are thumb or fingerprint based. Say If I want a standalone device which can be used as a lock (or in conjunction with) is that possible? The only one I saw in the market was supporting Win platform (for pc access). So does it have a backup key? in case the batteries fail? PHP query string parsing

I am currently working on a small PHP project for my college. I am quit new to it, so this query might seem trivial to you. What I am trying to do is use the index.php to act as the front page of the site, as well as be able to handle queries using the GET method. For example, http://localhost/index.php?search=somestring should work as well. That is, there might or might not be a query string. All I want to know is whether such a query string exists or not. Hi All, I have set up apache webserver(2.0.46/RHEL3) in one of our test-servers.. I want to apache to run cgi-script .. I have put ScriptAlias entry like this ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /etc/httpd/conf/cgi-bin there are certian cgi script inside this dir.. owner of the file is user : apache group : webserver i have given execute permission to these files.. still I am not able to run those scripts .. I do not have selinux installed Plz help Rgds Amit

lvm with 2.4.21

[ot][hardware] making redundant connections between switches and a router

Hi folks, I did attempt a google for this but did not know what search term would actually pull up a meaningful result for this. Apparatus/Equipment. a) SMC wireless dsl router (3 port) b) three 8 port switches, (dlink, dax, smc) Setup: 4 ports in each are used to connect to various PCs. 1 port used up to connect to the wireless router. Problem: I have had issues with routers where frequent reseting is required. So to prevent the entire internal network going down because of a bad router, I decided to make the connections redundant. So connected Port 6 of dlink to port 6 of Dax. Port 7 of dlink to port 6 of smc. Port 7 of dax to port 7 of smc with the assumption that even if the router fails, i'l have uninterrupted access. But this was not to be. Things got messed up, despite enabled connections, machines would not ping each other or the router. Then finally removed the links from Switch 1 and 2 to the router and also the connection from dax to smc and it started working fine. So what got messed up in the above setup? I am thinking its something to do with conflicts but not convinced as to why there would be a conflict? MTNL Triband with DSL-Ethernet bridge and Linux PPPoE?

Hello All, Has anybody tried MTNL Triband with entry level (but reliable) DSL-Ethernet bridge/converter? i.e. simple device which converts DSL signals to Ethernet signals? My idea is NOT to go for full fledged router(like DLink-502T) but use Linux with PPPoE because afterall DLink modem itself uses Linux. I have read that it works with DLink-502T in bridged mode so it should work with simple and cheap bridges. eBay shows such bridges to cost just 5-7$ but I am not sure if it works with Triband and PPPoE on Linux. That way one can avoid DSL modem deposit(and have their own bridge at same cost) as well as monthly rental. And have all the power of Linux firewall/NAT/cron jobs etc. Please let me know if someone has tried this and which bridge/converter was used and how much does it cost? Thanks in advance. Amish.

Mplayer running slowly in full screen mode

Hi, I compiled Mplayer on ubuntu breezy. It's working fine except that when i change to full screen mode, it runs slowly. The picture moves slowly. I have AMD 64 with MSI K8MMV motherboard. It has unichrome video card. I m using 1280x1024 resolution in vesa mode. I tried changing to VIA Unichrome, but X fails. Can anybody suggest me solution for this. Thanks & regards Manish
