hdc error

hi all these days there is one error in my system which keep on scrolling whenever i try to install any new rpm. error is something related to hdc on which my linux is installed. ########### hdc error {uncorrectable error} LBA 242674 error dma_intr device error etc........... ######### even when i am trying to check rpm database using db_verify command its again giving errors that database error. now i don know its something wrong with disk or rpm database. can any of you please help me in recovering from this . thanku all, linux bee in my next mail i'll send you the exact error Yahoo! Google uses some type of ranking based on number of times a word comes in a linked page (never bothered with details). This has been used in the past, most famous being linking evil or something to microsoft website. Google removed it when it became popular and comon knowledge. There are lots of documents on how to take a google ranking up. This one is done by community effort. If many different websites same the same thing, ranking goes up. Denmark-Guwahati Hookup

It will include perhaps the world's largest quasi-Wifi network (non-cabled nets) where people from across the world are gathering to research technology implementations in open networking. Radiophony has facilitated a global hookup which will go live on Sept 5 between 1400 and 1600 hrs IST. The purpose of this online workshop, which will bring together active technologists in the Denmark Festival with students attending the Techniche 2004 festival organised by IITG in Guwahati, is to research possibilities for deployment of open wirefree networks in developing countries. The intended beneficiaries of this initiative are the poor and others denied access. Anyone interested in this topic is welcome to join in and participate. -- Vickram

GLUG-BOM activities.

Greetings, The list seems to be back to life. Thanks to all for help. I am sorry I could not attend the last meet. Few improvements/contributions I noticed which have not been highlighted are as follows, 1. We have scheduled meets for coming 2 months, with many more GLUG members helping in co-ordinating the meets, I am sure we are doing a much better job now. 2. The website has been updated with the latest information. Thanks to website maintainers for the same. 3. Thanks to the TIFR team to provide us with the IT infrastructure for making all this possible. Please suggest any more activities that we can do on the list. Few inputs from my side are : 1. I would like if we can 2-3 trial meetings during working days, there have been many requests for the same. (Probably the Oct meet??). We can check if there is enough enthusiasm for the same and decide if we should continue with it. 2. We should have a gift certificate from GLUG-BOM given to speakers for giving a presentation at the meets. 3. Trevor wanted to have a CD library, I also feel the need to have a GNU/Linux distribution channel. 4. A method to collect some money for the activities, domain registration, stationary charges for certificates, etc. This mail is just a thought. Please feel free to put your own ideas and comments. phonetic Indic keymaps for fedora core 2

Hello, i tried using the phonetic devanagari layout available at http://www.gnowledge.org/Data/Objects/kblayout/keymaps.phonetic.tar.gz on gnome (fedora 2). using the keyboard switcher added to the panel, I am already using inscript devanagari and it works well. can somebody help me out. Mozilla Calendar

Hello Frndz, Mozilla.org has released the first "official" beta release of Mozilla Sunbird, a standalone calendaring application. The Sunbird Project is a redesign of the Mozilla Calendar component, with a goal producing a cross platform calendar based on Mozilla's XUL user interface language. Sunbird is aimed at users who want a calendar application based on Mozilla. The software works with the Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client. Two flavors of the project are available -- one that works as a plugin to Firefox/Thunderbird/Mozilla (known as "Mozilla Calendar"), and the standalone calendaring application, currently known as "Mozilla Sunbird." The group says that it hopes to improve footprint size and performance by focusing solely on the standalone calendar, and "by removing components and chrome we don't need." While Sunbird is still considered experimental, it is currently stable, according to the project. Additionally, the group says that although "Sunbird" is currently being used as the project's name, it may not be the final name for the software. Sept 12, 2004 GLUG meet

The agenda for the Sept 12th GLUG meet is slowly shaping up. Prof. DB Phatak of IIT Bombay will be one of the speakers. Prof. Phatak is the person responsible for persuading LIC to shift 10,000 desktops to Linux and has been evangelizing the use of FLOSS in engineering colleges across India. He is on the IT committees of many central and state government organizations and is therefore a highly influential figure. I will reconfirm his participation and circulate details of his talk next week. His talk will be followed by a talk on the licensing issues relevant to FLOSS by technology lawyers, Ms. Nappinai and Subramaniam Vutha of the Technology Law Forum. They work closely with the Mumbai Cyber Crime Cell and I have asked them to address the issue that Linux Torvalds recently raised in an interview to Businessweek magazine (see link and excerpt below my signature). This is becoming an issue that all of us are getting increasingly concerned about because Open Source has so much promise for India, but the licensing issues hold so much peril. I hope everyone finds the upcoming GLUG meet an enjoyable and educative experience. A: From a technical standpoint, I don't see any real challenges. Linux has come a long way in the last 13 years. I'll do another 13 years if that's what it takes. Technology wise, we're great. And we'll get better. The only things I worry about are all the things that go around the project. Part of it is legal issues. It's not that I think Linux has legal problems, but that the system doesn't work as well as it should, and crazy things happen, like the SCO suits [SCO (SCOX ) claims IBM (IBM ) breached a longtime contract by providing SCO-owned technology to Linux developers and has filed a lawsuit claiming $5 billion in damages. The trial isn't expected to start until November, 2005]. They will get slapped down in court. But as Linux gets really important, strange things come up. Software patents concern me. I worry about some greedy companies -- possibly failing ones, trying to make trouble and abusing the system. Software patents, in particular, are very ripe for abuse. The whole system encourages big corporations getting thousands and thousands of patents. Individuals almost never get them. We have random people in random countries working on random things, and they don't have 1,000 patent lawyers. So I'm not worried about one patent in particular, but the whole system. It's not a problem today. But it's a thing I can't control, unlike the technical side, where I can actually do something. I'm not that concerned about the threat of Microsoft (MSFT ) enforcing patents against Linux. I think their mode of operation isn't through the legal system. I think they hate lawyers more than most companies. They've been on the receiving end. [CEO Steve] Ballmer and [Chairman Bill] Gates have pride in the fact that their competition may have tried to crush them with legal wars, but they overcame. I think they would have a hard time using legal tactics. They would be ashamed. -0-

Problem with USB HID subsystem!

Hi, I am facing a problem with a USB device. This device is an HID device (i.e. not a keyboard/mouse/joystick). The Linux kernel is able to recognize the device as a HID device and load the appropriate modules. Using the HIDDEV ioctl's , in my application, I am able to get the vendor indetification, string descriptors and applications that the device supports. My problem is the following. This device supports a certain protocol using which commands can be sent to the device and it will respond with appropriate information. However, I do not know how to use the available IOCTL's in the hiddev usb subsystem to issue these commands to the device. I have been successful in writing my owm device driver for this device (i.e. bypassing the hiddev interface) and with this I can issue those commands to the device and get the information. Now I want to do this same thing using the hiddev interface and the facilities it provides. Any pointers will be helpful. Regards, Ashok Iyer

I wrote a little perl script that reads through the pipermail archives and lets you know whether a message is top-posted/overquoted/has long lines/excessively long signature/disclaimer attached to it. microsoft has obviously misread the market. There have been repeated suggestions to them for lower pricing in asia on buyer power basis. Instead they have come up with this really stupid option. They don't seem to realise that asian consumeras are more tech savy and very conscipous of cost-benefit analysys. It is going to leave many managers read in face soon. If reports are accurate, networking has either been crippled or disabled entirely and they've stripped the OS down to such an extent, that only 3 programs can run concurrently. So, if you have a firewall and an antivirus running at all times, (and with Windows you do; you really do) then you simply _cannot_ multitask. If this is MS's much-touted response to Linux, they must *really* be hard up for ideas. Just my 2-pice. = v i s t a s p = bT Square Peg P.S. Calling it "Starter Edition" was a baaad move...
