Linux compatible AMD64 motherboard...

Hi, One of my friends wants to go in for a new system. He is keen on dualbooting with Linux and Windows. He is going in for an AMD64 3000+ system. He asked me to recommend a good compatible motherboard with moderate to high performance. I am a complete newbie to AMD systems. I have a sempron system but I am clueless about which motherboards are available for AMD64 let alone the good ones compatible with Linux... Anyone with an AMD64 system please respond. PS.: I heard that AMD64 is based on different cores. Which core should he get? Also what should be the operating frequency of the DDR RAM he buys? 333MHz or 400MHz or should he go in for a DDR2? I know that the CPUs FSB and the RAM's OF should be in sync for optimum performance. What is it for an AMD64 system? -- Dinesh A. Joshi

synchronizing samba and kerberos password

we have a kerberos and samba server running in our lab for authenticating the linux and windows user respectively. both use openldap 2.2.23 as the backend. The problem is we need to synchronize the password in both kerberos and samba. we tried including an overlay called smbk5pwd that comes with openldap3. but we were not able to do that. How do we include smbk5pwd in openldap2.2.23 ? is there any other solution for synchronizing the password in samba and kerberos. we are using MIT kerberos V -- S.Senthil Kumaran blog : http://sskganesan.blogspot.com

I have a relatek rtl 8139 based zebronics ethernet card after a lot of struggle i manged to obtain the drivers that compiled properly. But after doing depmod as the readme file said, what do i do next.. I use fc2, i have tried using wizards that come with fc2 as m a newbie, but that says the device is probably not there although it works fine m$ I have tried googling but havent found anything that would solve my problem. -- Puneet

Umbrella Installation Software

Hi all, Does there exist a sort of umbrella installation mechanism that could take care of the specific ways of installing various software distribution mechanisms. I mean if the software is a tar file it should extract it, and then provide me with a dialog box for configure script flags and execute make and make install. Or for rpms it should execut the command rpm with appropriate flags. If it does not exist do you think there is any merit in trying to build one?? I know its just a gui for certain commands but if it helps non-programmer users why not?? -- Puneet

xine installation problem

hi i did install libxine1-1.1.2cvs-051214.i686.rpm and xine-ui-0.99.4cvs-051003.i586.rpm for xine but when i tried to invoke xine this is wht i see at command line - xine: /lib/i686/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.3.2' not found (required by /usr/lib/libxine.so.1) Although the lib mentioned above is present on my system at the same location mentioned above then why the problem? This involves the Dislin library I mentioned in an earlier mail. I used it earlier in Dev-C++ using Mingw. In that case case, I simply added the file 'dismgc.a' in the Linker parameters window. I want to test it in Linux now. And in the Linux version of the library, there are two files, 'dislin-9.0.a' and 'dislin-9.0.so' - which library file am I supposed to link to? And how do link to a single file, from the command line? Both the library files, the header file and the source file are in the same directory. I'm using Ubuntu 5.10, it has GCC 4.0.2. -- Rohit V. Ubuntu 5.10 Nvidia driver install problem

Has anyone faced a problem with installing the Nvidia drivers on ubuntu 5.10 I have an Intel 815 mobo (integrated graphics), but I'm using the AGP slot with GeForce 2 MX 400. When i try to install the driver using "sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx" (as in ubuntuguide.org) everything installs ...but then when i restart x (ctrl+alt+backspace) or restart the comp ... the machine reboots at the point when x is trying to come up. So then i tried installing the official nvidia drivers. Since it didnt have precompiled module for the kernel (i'm using the one that came with 5.10) it build it (i downloaded gcc 3.4 for that and kernel headers), but the same thing happens again. Every time it tries to start x it reboots. I could do with some help here. Anand.

Evolution - mail disappeared

I recently decided using Evolution Mail. I downloaded all my mail (over 2k messages) from my GMail account and marked then Read. All the messages disappeared immediately. However, a day later when I tried to search for a mail I figured out there is no way to view the Read messages. On Windows machines problems arise when they start fooling around with system files or donâ €™t respond appropriately to warning messages. By contrast, the greater security provided by Linux means kids can play, largely unsupervised, with little risk to the system. This briefing looks at various aspects of using Linux with kids – both in terms of software and playing with hardware. Gnu/Linux is a really good computer operating system – especially if you like playing with networks or programming languages. But there is one area where both the resources available with Linux distributions, and the efforts of the Linux support community to provide assistance, are a little thin – using Linux with young children. This briefing has been developed to address this shortfall in support. The development of this briefing has not been a formal study. It has emerged as a result of the experience gained in studying how two young children (right) have been able to learn how to use the computer, and the functions of the graphical desktop. What follows is therefore a documentation of the knowledge gained from observation rather than an in-depth study. It is also the reason why this briefing is limited to the ages three to seven. Multiple errors ? hardware related

Hi, Sorry for the somewhat vague subject. also sorry for the rotten formatting, I am using webmail just now. I have a new (as in a couple of months old) machine. The specs are: 2.4 G P4, i845 integrated graphics card, 512 ram, 500 mb swap, 80G hdd, 15 inch Sony tft monitor. I have FC4 and Kubuntu 5.10 on the machine. The problem I face is that every once in a while, the X server crashes. In FC4 I am back at the graphical login prompt. In kubuntu I just lose the display completely and I have to shutdown. This can happen as frequently as once evry 5 or 10 minutes :( Sometimes I get kernel panic messages when the Xserver crashes. Another thing is that in FC4, both Firefox (upgraded to 1.0.7 from fedora updates) and Opera crash very frequently. Also Gkrellm crashes suddenly. I goolged for Xsever crashes w/ i845 on google. It seems to be an old problem (end 2004). The solution was to recompile the kernel to include the i915 driver, but it is already in the kernel and is seen as being found in Xorg.log. free shows 0 swap though the entries in /etc/fstab are correct. On bootup it does show as enabling swap. I am at my wits' end, the hardware chappie as usual is no help. I've run memtest but with no errors coming up. I can provide any more info as required. regards, Sharukh.

error - missing config.h in kernel sources

hi, i am trying to upgrade the driver e1000. for which i have to rpmbuild the driver to make an rpm. this is what i did, i am runnig kernel version, 2.6.14 (installed via rpm running on FC4) then i downloaded latest e1000 drivers sources from intel's website. then i did, rpmbuild -tb e1000-6.2.15.tar.gz gave me an error that version.h is missing, googled for it, and got the answer, had to do, make include/linux/version.h in kernel sources dir. but after that if i again give that, rpmbuild -tb e1000-6.2.15.tar.gz gives me following error, make: Entering directory `/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/e1000-6.2.15/src' Makefile:101: *** Linux kernel source not configured - missing config.h. This is something interesting I read in the linux-magazine.com: Not so long ago, professional quality 3D animation required expensive workstations. The software they ran, for example, Maya (Unlimited Vision), cost more than $15,000 early in 2002, and the software technology was hidden behind restictive licenses. What's the 3D animation process? The process starts with modeling the shape of the 3D object. The next stage is texturing, that is, adding a kind of skin. This step gives the model a natural looking surface with light reflexes and a surface structure. UV mapping projects 2D bitmaps (such as wood grains) onto the 3D surface; in its simplest form, this is like posting a bill on an advertising column. The 3D model can then be animated. In the rigging process, joints are added to the figure. The joints allow the the artist to move a complex object like a puppetter moves a puppet. After completing the basic animation scene, the animator adds special effects, such as water, fire, or smoke. The scene is then lit by positioning light sources, just like in conventional movie making. The post production is concerned with optimizing the nearly-finished product, coming it with the movie or video scenes, and adding a soundtrack. Also: Normally, many different programs are used to create a 3D animation. First of all, you need a program to create the 3D models. In most cases, animation and rendering (conversion of finished models to photo-realistic images) are handled by separate programs. Rendering is so vastly complext that it typically requires a specialized tool. Hi, Is there anyway we can emulate internet explorer on linux? (any distro?) While testing out sites (Especially when using CSS), it's a pain to see things display differently than intended in IE. Considering that most people use a combination of WinXP/98+IE combo, we cannot ignore this demographic and i dont want to use up a machine on windows just for testing. Terminal and Sudo

Hello All, There are two problems for which I need some help. 1. Right from the start, FC4 is not able to open terminal windows from Ctrl+Alt F1 to F6. They would just be a blank screen. F7 would be back to GUI though. I checked up on the net and it was related to some bug in the gcc https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=161242 Since no such file was available for yum update, I put on the Yumx and checked all updates that had the name Xorg. Now F1 to F6 open but on going back to F7, the display goes bonkers. It only shows blinking cursors and hourglasses. It cannot go back to F1 to F6 either. Only a forced reboot works. Any tips? 2. I installed sudo but configuring the sudoers file is a little complex. The sudoers example site http://www.courtesan.com/sudo/sample.sudoers has detailed explanation but how would I add a line to allow, say user1 to give sudo commands without a password? Sharing an Internet Connection

hi, i have a reliance fwp phone which i use to connect to the internet. I want to share this connection with two of my friends so that all of us get equal bandwidth if accessing at the same time. We have thought of two possible alternatives 1. the computer to which the phone is connected to have two Ethernet card with a p2p connection to the other two. -are there any issues regarding equal bandwidth division with this approach and secondly will a simple proxy software do or do we need some additional software to make this approach work. I am currently using Fedora core 2 but if there is any other distribution more suited to this then switching over to that is not a problem. 2. have a switch or hub and use that to share the connection. The only problem with this is the additional cost as where i live(vellore, tn) 4 port switches are difficult to get and an 8 port one cost around 800-900 i guess so that means an additional 300 bucks per person. How to draw graphics in linux?

I want help for how to draw such graphics in linux...is there any inbuilt tool provided ? I got some information about the Glade & GTK+ ...is these tools used for developing only user interface or do they used for creating graphics? Network problem

There is an odd problem I am facing. I just realized that I can't ping anyone on the network...not even myself (localhost). :-s I am using two IP addresses in the form of eth0 and eth0:1 . The eth0 is used for Sify's static IP and eth0:1 for the local network. Amazingly, everything including all internet applications and DC work perfectly. But neither can I ping anyone's IP on the local network (except for Sify's server) nor can others ping my IP. The point is that this is happening only on Ubuntu. These things seem to be on m$. Due to this problem, I can't use applications like vnc and gnump3d. What could be the problem? I have inserted lines for eth0:1 manually in the /etc/network/interfaces -- Regards, Sanket Medhi.

Does anyone have a webcam working on their Debian systems? Hello All, This is a little embarasing to ask as something as simple as triband is not getting setup in linux. On the day we met at Bandra, later I tried it out at my uncle's place and no success. Now I got it at my place and I tried dhcp as well as static ip but nothing works. In dhcp, the dns becomes 192.168.1.1 instead of mtnl's dns, so I made it static but no result. /etc/resolv.conf show the 2 dns entries. Help help!! Hacking the DSL502T

Opened the ADSL. Inside is a Malta MIPS processor from TI TD7300, 8MB ram and 16Mb (2MB) rom. There is 5 pin berg connector which has a LVTTL serial port and a 10 pin jtag. The jtag is neat for mucking inside the cpu and flashing the flashrom or debugging using gdb. I will use serial as it is simple for regular stuff. Ideally U need a lvttl to rs232 converter (MAX3232) to connect to a pc, but that device is not easily available. I used regular MAX232 and connected to the pc. Fire up minicom @ 38000bps u drop into sh. type reboot first message is TI copyright follwed by LINUX started... Config serial console: ttyS0,38400 CPU revision is: 00018448 Primary instruction cache 16kb, linesize 16 bytes (4 ways) Primary data cache 16kb, linesize 16 bytes (4 ways) Number of TLB entries 16. Linux version 2.4.17_mvl21-malta-mips_fp_le (jenny@fd6e) (gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release/Mon5 Determined physical RAM map: etc. etc. Google produced plenty of info on dsl502. Whats the difference? diff the following first 1) Kernel differences that end user can feel 2) Distribution differences and lack or advantage of software. I'm currently using ubuntu and I'm very happy with it. It has all things which Debian's side of Gnu/Linux can give, and its working fine with lots of newbie/intermediate user friendly documentation. I read many flame of Linux vs BSD and flamers seem to be supporting BSD, Should i install BSD flavor and try it? will it just work like ubuntu (Automatix, wiki.ubuntu.com)? Revant

Hi guys, I am planning to get a 802.11g Wifi router. My choices are : WGR614 - netgear 432BRP - trendnet wrt54g - linksys di524 - dlink xxxx - SMC (dunno the model no.) I have gotten a couple of quotes. The lowest till now I have gotten is for netgear WGR614 from a shop at Lamington road( I think its called Maxcom or something). Is it good (the router)? Does anyone use it? Any problems? Lemme know. I have a Netgear WG311v2 card and its drivers suck. Netgear hasn't released many updates but I can somehow work with that card using Ndiswrapper. Though, I love my Intel 2200PRO wifi card. It's drivers rock! :D Anyway, I would like to the following: 1. Where will I get the Trendnet router? Asked a couple of places. Nobody had it. I contacted Trendnet USA. They gave me a phone no. of a guy in Pune! Couldn't contact him. But they definitely have that product in market and in India. I am keen to get this product because its low cost and more over I have their 5 port switch which works really great. 2. Hello All, I have shifted to gmail as yahoo's uk server appears to have disabled pop access for Indian users. Gmail is all set in thunderbird but on clicking 'get mail' it connects to pop.gmail.com and just remains hanged. Is this related to some security setting in the triband or linux that's causing this. Gmail users on triband please help. All pop and smtp settings as per gmail's instructions, so that area is ok. Regards, Rony

Mounting Problem

I am using Redhat 9 and at the time of booting it displays Mounting local file systems and other filesystems are failed. The correct message is, "Mounting local filesystems: mount: wrong filesystem type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/fd0 or too many mounted file systems. .... Mounting other filesystem: floppy0: probe failed floppy0: probe failed .............................. end_request I/O error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector 0 vfat-fs: Unable to read superblock mount: wrong filesystem type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/fd0 or too many mounted file systems." i couldnt find the error i wil be pleased if someone helps me in this. [OT] MTNL TriBand - rollover of unused MBs

For the past couple of days I have been checking the "Account Summary" for my NU plan and noticed that my unused MBs from Nov/05 have been rolled over to the Dec/05 quota thus giving me much more than 1023MB. At first I thought it was probably an error but apparently it is not. Each time I check - the counter "Free DSL MB ..." is consistent with what it showed at the beginning of the month decremented by my non NU usage. I was under the impression, the download quota got reset to the plan max. every month. hello all, i m hacking on the code of tty_io.c file , in /usr/src/linux-2.6.9/drivers/char directory... i dunno how to compile it after making some changes there in the c file... actually,i have put on some printk in between..and want to see the response in /var/log/messages.. Bt,bt i have to compile it..,which i dunno,as to how to do.. if i give just make command in the directory . /usr/src/linux-2.6.9/drivers/char directory..it simply says.. make: *** No rule to make target `/cp437.uni', needed by `/consolemap_deftbl.c'. FAT partition unusable in debian

Hi friends, I had formatted my complete hard drive to install debian linux. One of the partitions I had made was a FAT32 partition. But, due to some mistakes in partitioning I had to repartition my hard disk. But, this time I left my FAT32 partition untouched. I have mounted it as /entertainement Now, I cannot write to that partition using normal user account. Though I can do it as root. I tried to change the permissions using root but I couldn't allowing to do so. Any ideas about what can I do?

Visited the Indian patent website http://patentoffice.nic.in Browsing thru the applications reveals filings for such things as methods for zooming, play list, graphic equalisers - all in software - filed by the likes of Samsung (who seems to be one major spin master) , TCS (for a software for some business process) and others jerks from Australia, USA etc. All the applications were filed in 2002. The patent office publishes applications every week. http://patentoffice.nic.in/ipr/patent/journal_archieve/ patent_journal_2005.htm We should scrutinise them and alert FSF India where ever software / computers / electronics and prior art is involved. What I am interested to know is whether, anyone in this list has attempted any one of the above mentioned level examinations? Very particularly, if anyone has attempted the E level exam, I would like to know what reference material was used for it and if possible, can it be shared for sometime? It has basic two papers, General Aptitude and Computer Concepts as two papers to be attempted, and I would like to know if anyone could lend me the book that has been mentioned on their website.
