Ubuntu 5.10 Live Report

Hello All, This month's LFY magazine has a Ubuntu 5.10 live CD that can be used as a live sample of the Ubuntu 5.10 OS. It installed and setup smoothly. The system was P4 2.4 GHz, Intel 845 GEBV2 MB, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB IDE HDD. The display drivers were much better than 5.04 and gave good screen resolution unlike 5.04's basic 640x480 resolution. Sound could not be tested as multimedia was not complete due to legal issues :-P . Due to the dhcp now working in linux too, the triband ADSL modem got the system on the net as soon as it was up. The firewall inside the modem took care of open ports in the live system. The wvdial.conf file from my other distros was simply copied and run. It ran smoothly for both, the dialup modem as well as the Reliance LSP350R. Only thing to remember is that all root based commands must be preceeded by the word 'sudo'. And after the first run of the triband internet, switch off the adsl modem and after any of the wvdial connections are up, run the 'sudo route add default ppp0' command for net access. The transcend 512 mb pen drive was detected flawlessly and a cute little icon was automatically created on the desktop. On the whole it was a very good experience and this distro came out in flying colours. It is definately worth a try. :) My only query is that if root access is not allowed for security, still anyone can simply sudo and gain access. How is the system protected from outside. If anyone can hack into the user account, can he then sudo and play ball? How secure is this sudo? If however, I change the IP address of eth0.5 to 10.1.3.244, I can ping 10.1.3.128 (because now both are on the same subnet, and same vlan) I thought that even though the source (10.1.1.10) and destination IP (10.1.3.128) address are on different subnets, as both are on the same vlan, the gateway should be able to forward the packets. I tried to send a bug report using the Bug Buddy on Ubuntu. But it asks me for a sendmail path to send the mail to the developers. What should this path be? Playing sound files/songs

Hi Everyone, Data Quest is apparently doing a survey on Linux Desktop usage. I know because they called me to ask me some questions on their questionaire. The sad thing is that the guys doing the survey have absolutely no idea of what they are doing and apparantly not even connected with InfoTech. First they had a very unclear way of introducing the matter, asif worried that they will be asked something they cant answer. I told them that yes, I use Linux Desktop software. He asked me again whether I use Linux on Desktop. I clarified to him that we have stopped using desktop computers and everyone in our firm now uses Laptop computers but we use Linux in the laptops. The big joke is that he said "Oh, so you do not use Linux in Desktops.....Ok, thank you" and put down the line. They guy obviously does not know the difference between desktop computers and desktop software and that Linux Desktop software can also be loaded on laptops too. If anyone knows some of the senior managers in Data Quest, please convey this to them. I am quiet sure that at this rate, they will show a very low user numbers. Regards Saswata

SMTP for Internet

Gtk 1.2 themes

How can I change the gtk 1.2 themes? I got gtk-engines-industrial with apt, but cant change the theme of my gtk 1.2 apps (xmms, Audacity, Vlc Player, etc.) I tried to change the theme with gtk-theme-switch package and also by manually editing ~/.gtkrc file. I cant see any change in the above mentioned apps. revant

Couple of things to be taken care of when using The Best DSL service in Mumbai. 1) Please change router password from default "admin". By going into the router--->Status, I can get my router's IP address. If I keep trying the IPs directly in ascending or descending serial order, sure enough I will reach other routers and where the default password is admin. Not that I can gain anything out of it, but can fiddle around with the settings and make it difficult for the other person. OR simply enable remote telnet management/web management and try and exploit those. Changing the admin password is a good first step. 2) The login/password (phone number/CA number) will work from any modem/location which has DSL enabled. This means that unlike the Caller ID based dial up system, I can use my username/password from anyone's dsl enabled location. The converse is, someone could do the same to me too. while they can get your number from the username field if they access your router, they cannot get your CA number. However, one call to the call center and a couple of requests later, you can get that too. for any number. They do not have a good verification system in place. So you can start downloading on others time. Just like the usernames/passwords circulated during VSNLs 15000/yr TCP/IP account days. Changing the default password by going to the mtnl website and subsequently in the router would be another good step. 3) Also, after every change, we are supposed to go into Tools-->System, Save and Reboot. This does not work with Firefox 1.5 beta atleast. Hope this helps. I have already told my sub divisional engineer about this and sent a brief note to the feedback form. Hi people, I want to make an mp3 player in Linux. It's just for the experience. I was looking around for the specs of mp3 format. Couldn't find any. That is kinda obvious since mp3 is a proprietary format. But there are so many open source mp3 decoders AND encoders. Where / how do these people get the specs? Wanted Video Cropper

Hello All, I am looking for a video cropper that works in FC4. Uncle google pointed towards LIVES. After some dependency hassles I downloaded LIVES but thats too slow and hangs and sometimes I need to press the reset button as it hangs my system too. It may be due to the conflicts in rpms as some dependencies were downloaded from yum and some from the forbidden lavin(?). However I am now looking for something thats easy to load directly from yum and works properly. I have converted some dvds to single mpeg files (in windows) and I need to split them into 2 cds. Internet with Fedora Core 1

Hello friends, I'd like to ask a very trivial question today. Actually I am a novice Linux user and am taking sure but slow steps towards complete migration from Windows to Unix/Linux. I am using RedHat Fedora Core1 at my home and college, but the only real hurdle in my path to becoming a full Linux only user is that I cant connect to the internet. I have this FC1 system, with a Bsnal broadband connection. At the time of installation, I didnt configure my IP address or DNS service. I let it remain default to DHCP. But now when I create a new xDSL connection using Internet connection wizardover my NIC card (eth0), the connection does activate as the message says, but the websites dont open. Also, at the time of bootup, what shoul be the message regarding network interface eth0. I hav always got an OK message when I didnt configure it . But after assigning it an IP 192.168.10.1, it says failed to bring up my ethernet card. So kindly help me out, coz although I am comfortable with a little administration and software package installation, I still experience a lot of problems, when trying to configure sendmail or DNS or NIS etc and this internet connection problem is making me mad. As I had really set a deadline to switching over to Linux fully( no windows usage at all), by this month's end. I hope many of u can help me out, by giving me some insight on where i might be doin something wrong, where can i find step by step tutorials etc. I hav also installed Roaring Penguin's pppoe software, but even that failed to help. I had a guy asking me to do everything on the modem conf except stand on my head. In the end I happened to mention that I had changed the password to non-default value. It was like I committed some sacrilege to ancient MTNL gods. He asked me to reset it back and never change it again. I did the same and sure as hell it worked the very first time. Hello All, Here is a link that can be used to test a firewall online. http://scan.sygatetech.com/ There is a firewall in your ADSL modem too and by default it is disabled. There are additional services that can be disabled in the inbound direction. This will give additional protection over your linux firewall. If you change your password at the mtnl website and next time you put on your system the net is down, don't worry. Simply go to the 192.168.1.1 interface of the ADSL and change your stored password. SuSe 10 Report

Hello All, Suse 10 from LFY was tried out. Overall, it is a little disappointing considering that SuSe is generally recommended for desktop usage. This was my first trial of the SuSe distro for a desktop. During installation, its manual partition utility could not detect free unpartitioned space in my hdd and I had to reboot into FC4, my current OS to create a new partition in the free space using fdisk. Then this partition was selected in the SuSe installer. Device detection was good with sound and graphics working fine. However it could not mount CDs in my DVD ROM as well as CD R/W so media players could not be tested. A very big problem. Another important facility that is lacking is a proper gui dialup tool like kppp in kde or anything else in gnome. There was a novell dialup tool found after a lot of hunting in the packages selection list but that does not work even in root login. Otherwise, for ethernet usage this distro appears to have a lot of stuff packed in and its packages selection list in the dvd looks pretty impressive. FC4 may not be very impressive but at lest it gets its basic stuff working pretty well. Hi people, I have been using kmail for a long time and now i am experimenting with mozilla's default mail client. It looks ok. But I have a problem with both kmail and this client. I am unable to see my own replies i.e. the mail clients ignore my own emails. Is there a way I can get them to fetch my messages too? This will make tracking threads easier for me. help needed regarding mapping of keyboard in network

hello all, I m just trying to understand the Xfree86 code . What i am trying to do is to get the input keys from another keyboard in the network through a socket (not the one attached with my CPU).Now my problem is in getting the keys mapped correctly.I am getting the alphabets correctly,but the other extended functional keys like up,down,left,right,etc. are not being mapped correctly. If somebody can help or suggest in correct keymap,and where from the control for the corresponding extended keys are coming in Xserver. Thanks in advance... cheers Romel

Hello everybody, Friends, I'd like to ask all of u some questions. 1) Can anybody of u help me out with the process of email archival by pointing out any web resources, books, links etc. I need to know what exactly email archival means. 2)I am trying to run two s/w on RedHat Linux FC1 . These are Powermail and Aemail, but I am facing some configuration problems. Can anybody help me out there? Internal modem driver

Can anyone help me get the internal modem (Dlink modem, HSF chipset) up and running. OS is RHEL 3. The system detects the card, but kppp doesn't have any entry for the said card. I am also not sure which entry in /dev corresponds with the card. I may sound strange, but until now I have been using Linux only as a learning platform and not a serious PC for daily use. Multimedia in Linux

Hello All, There was some discussion on playing cds on linux distros and the results seem to be 50-50. The experts have been able to play movies on various linux distros whereas the not-so-experts or those experts not into multimedia have not had much luck playing them. My system has the following configuration: P4 2.4 Ghz., Intel Original 845 GEBV2 mobo, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB baracuda hdd, Sony DVD rom, Samsung CD R/W. Now since one year, I have tried out many linux distros in order to find the ideal one that can do everything or atlest do the normal stuff thats done in the 'other' popular OS ;) While its no problem connecting to the net or email or word processing or firewall, a major block exists in the multimedia area. Detection of sound cards is not a very big issue as most of the distros did detect and install sound. The major roadblock is in running the media playes for mp3s, mpegs, VCDs or DVDs. In my system, the RHEL could play mp3s only after real player was downloaded. Debian could not play anything. Mandrake 10.1 was the only OS that played VCDs and DVDs without any extra download or installation. However it had a problem of residue picture frames scattering over the desktop on close of player. FC4, SuSe 10 as well as Ubuntu failed. SuSe 10 has CD mounting problems. Ubuntu 5.04 did not create a root password so it had to be created by booting into recovery mode. Even then, in the user mode gui, it does not accept the root password for admin utilities and says 'password incorrect'. As per the new instructions given about downloading codecs from mplayer and installing them in the /usr/lib/win32 dir, all this was done but the players in FC4, SuSe 10 as well as Ubuntu 5.04 that was tried out, don't play anything and simply give some errors. My clients place an order for a computer and within 4 days it has to be ready. On the fifth day it is installed on site. In these 4 days the engineers are busy attending to other calls as well as other installations so the pattern is this: First day get the material from the dealer. Day two, install the system to test for any defects. Day two or day three, load the sofware. Day four keep the system on soak test. Day five, deliver the system. Now in this tight schedule, how is a production engineer expected to load linux for the latest hardware, with all its dependency problems? My users are mainly home and small office ones and they have a lot of multimedia activity going on. Please do not treat this message as a rant or cribbing or a complaint against linux. It is simply an SOS from a junior linuxer on behalf of other junior linuxers too. I am not looking at an individual problem for any particular distro. Its a general problem that I want to highlight. [OT] 'expect' script to reboot MTNL DLink 502t modem/router

Met with GM Broadband @ MTNL last Friday and he told me that their portal software was not ready to handle NU and non NU hours for the NU plan i.e. if the login sessions spans over NU and non NU hours, the traffic could counted towards "additional usage" leading to the overcharge nightmare I posted a few weeks back. He told me to turn the modem off/on @ 00:00 and 08:00 which would create fresh login sessions until the portal vendor provides them with a fix (this method was also discussed in this list). Fortunately, with a Linux/*nix box, the following script can automate this annoying chore. You need expect and tcl packages installed in your box. Rebuilding partition table.

Hi, I just wanted to share my experience so that those who are new to gnu/linux like me can use it better. I have an 80 GB hard disk. I had 9 partitions in it. I use both windows and linux. I was using WinImage to create a virtual hard disk and i ruined my partition table. I have a lot of data in my hard disk so I somehow wanted to recover. I googled. I was continuously getting same kind of solution. Noting down the Partition start and end address and creating it again exactly. Since I lost my partition table completely that solution was of no use to me. Then I found an utility called gpart in the live cd (Slax KillBill) (I use a couple of live cds). Using gpart I was able to rebuild my partition table. though I lost one partition(and some important data). Its unbelievably good that it uses some way of determining the start and end address of filesystems in partitions and rebuilds the partition table almost perfectly. For a newbie like me, it was a great experience and i learnt that gnu/linux can do wonders if u know how to use it. Regards, Raj

Fedora Core 4 problem

Hi all, I tried to install Fedora Core 4 on my system thru a DVD. But i got error something like this :"Found errors while installing GAWK-x.xxx. This can be due to media failure/hardware problem. This is Fatal Error and your installation will be aborted. Click OK to reboot." Is there any way by which we can skip the packages that are erroneous and continue with the remaining installation. image merging tool in linux

hi, i am looking for image merging software in linux (preferebly command line). i have a very big print which i have scanned into pieces (scanner size was not sufficient to scan at one go). i tried google, but no luck. tried gimp but it will have to do it manually i guess. but manually merging them border to border is not possible (due to insufficient RAM- even 2Gb is not enough, it stalls for some time even for a small movement of any image). so it would be nice, simply to feed these images to a software and let it take whatever time to do the job. the similar software is present in many digital cameras, to be used to make panorama images. any help is badly needed. thanks.

Hello everybody, This is my first post to this group. I hav a problem concerning the archival of emails. I hav been assigned a project to develop a solution to archive emails on a HP-UX system. So, Ihav started work on it on my RedHat Fedora Core 1 system, since I don't hav an HP-UX box. I am trying to test some opensource solutions and take help from them. Some of these are Aemail, Powermail, mairix etc. Some issues in front of me are : 1. I want all of u, who can help, to come forward and suggest ur own approach to this problem of email archival. 2. I am trying to test both Powermail and Aemail, available at the GNU website, but i am having problem making them run. a)In case of Aemail, I am having trouble configuring and administering PostgreSQl for using with Aemail. b)In case of Powermail, I am having trouble configuring Powermail to interact with MySQL in the correct manner. 3)Can anyone of u suggest ant other opensource solutions to handle the problem of email archival? 4) I am currently developing a solution of my own where i use Archmbox, another opensource product under GPL, to archive mails from an mbox file and compress it. then i encrypt it and send it over to a storage server. Before archival, all the emails are indexed on the basis of their date, sender and subject in a simple text file. And whenever the person wants to restore the archived email, he can search the indexfile to find the compressed file which contains the particular email.So then it can be downloaded from the storage server ( maye an ftp server) and then decomressed, decrypted to get the original mail back. can u ppl suggest any improvments in this plan of action? or whether a database can be used, if yes, where? with regards, sushant gulati __________________________________ Yahoo! hi everybody, The question i want to ask is how can i automate ftp login and uploading and downloading of files using VSFTP on Linux, using shell scripts? In other words, can explicit login and typing of username password be avoided by using shell scripts in any way to login to a ftp server. can uploading and downloading of files be automated by the shell scripts in any way? Also can anyone suggest me some alternative approach where ftp's explicit login be avoided and if there is some other opensource products like rsync etc . Can they match ftp in functionality? Boot Problem.

Hi All I had a Redhat Enterprise 4 ES, running on my system and lately i installed a fedora 4, Now i am not able to boot back to Redhat. Here is what i did~ Redhat -OS /boot -> hda1 / -hda2 Swap ->hda3 Fedora Core4 -OS / -> hda4 Uses the same swap And presently Fedora is bootable so i mount Redhat boot hda1 and copy all the main files (vmlinuz, SystemMap, initrd and config) files on to the /boot directory of Fedora Boot directory inside directory called REDHAT. Added title here the /boot/redhat/vmlinuz-EL (path) ro /dev/hda4 Initrd here.../boot/redhat/initrd.El And it boots up and detects everything then Mounting root system kjournald starting ext3-fs:mounted filesystem mount:error 2 mounting none Switching to new root Warning: can't access (null) exec of init ((null)) failed!!!:14 umount /initrd/dev failed:2 Kernel panic Does anybody has a working fedora and redhat-el and why is that grub now doesn't detect the other OS,would this be due to SELINUX?
