Hi, I'm using Debian 5 w/ mutt, postfix, fetchmail, procmail. I have discontinued my mtnl triband and taken a reliance broadband netconnect connection. I've configured the stuff in the usual way but fetchmail is acting up. hard disk in trouble after fsck

Dear List, A harddisk on the laptop asked for fsck which was done. The process took quiet some time and at the end of it, it linked all the data to the lost+found directory and also the ext3 journal info of the partition was changed by the FSCK process to ext2. Now, all the folders and files are gone and they seem to be in the lost+found directory and all the folders and files names have been changed to numerical. the command tune2fs also did not help. How to recover the folders and files from the lost+found directory ? Looking at this issue from another angle; if we could re-create the missing parts from a smaller file, then why do we need a larger file in the first place? MP3 itself is a compressed audio format where a lot of undetectable (for human ear) audio signals are removed from the original using some sophisticated filtering. Mp3 Sound quality.

Hello, I am trying to download songs from the site below but in many movies the file size is about half MB and the sound has a disturbing metallic sound. Is there any other way to download it or its just jinxed at the server itself. Normally good quality mp3s have 4 to 5 MB sizes but this one is too compressed. Even the file size during download is higher (about 550 Kb) than the one sitting inside the disk after download (86 KB). Network spped issue.

Hey guys, Am facing an issue on HP blade server. The OS installed is OEL(Oracle enterprise Linux5.2 ) when i fire mii-tool command i get the network speed as 100mbps half duplex. but when i fire ethtool eth0 commad it shows me 1000 mbps full duplex. the blade server has gigabite ethernet ports. when i checked the dmesg output it shows me 1000 mbps full duplex on eth0. pls let me know which command should i use to know the excate network card speed. -- Regards Advait Raut

[OT] Recommendation for FTP hosting provider in Kurla/Vashi corridor

I am looking for a FTP hosting provider in the Kurla/Vashi corridor. The average upstream (my FTP site to WAN) data transfer is 20 GB/month. The average downstream (WAN to my FTP site) data transfer is 4-5 GB/month. This would be my rough storage requirement as well. Both upload/download speeds should be at least 200 Kilo Bytes per second. The data center (hosting FTP site) should have the service for copying files, delivered to them in a portable hard disk, on to the FTP site. I am not looking for a dedicated FTP box. Shared or VPS FTP hosting is fine if the system can deliver sustained data transfer rate mentioned above. Please let me know of any service provider that you have had experience with for FTP hosting. [OT] Reliance Broadband ( Broadnet )

Hello folks, I was in Mumbai recently and thought of getting an additional internet connection to have better redundancy. For all those who are MTNL's religious followers, I decided to minimize the use of their connection primarily because of their lack of support ( 2 months of horror ) and ADSL is extremely sensitive to noise. MTNL's plans are also pretty costly as compared to Reliance's. Reliance provides connectivity through cat5e fiber in my area ( Andheri West ). They also provide ADSL connections but only in certain areas. I did have a Reliance connection but I disconnected it primarily due to the haphazard nature of their service and lack of reliability. But now they have professionalized their customer support ( atleast yelling at times yields extremely good results ). They have also improved the reliability of their network - they have battery backups and all :P Previously they relied on the horrible WAN setup by BSES powersurfer. Coming to the technical aspect of this thread, they have a really annoying login system ( which is a big security threat as well ). They basically rely on their DNS servers to authenticate the user. For example, if I'm not logged in and I type google.com, their DNS server returns an internal IP ( 10.x.x.x ) and they issue a 302 redirect so the browser is redirected to a login page. This is where you enter your credentials and you get logged in. This is a very annoying method of logging in the user but now-a-days many ISPs prefer it! On Linux you have the option of using a script called AutoLogin to keep you logged in 24x7. Heres the gotcha! This connection wouldn't work when I connected it to the WAN port of my wireless router ( Netgear WGR614v5 ). The problem was / is that when my router gets the IP and DNS information from the DHCP server, it ends up with 4 DNS servers but it remembers only 2 =P The first two are vanilla DNS servers while the last two take care of redirecting and logging in the user. So the router was querying the vanilla DNS servers and it never redirected me to the login page. They also have MAC address binding in place =P -- Regards, Dinesh A. Joshi

Hi, Is there a way to cluster a socket program? I have been assigned a task to cluster the program which connects to server using a socket. The purpose is to get the redundancy of program (i.e. if program fails on machine A machine B should take over). We need this as this is the program which has the routing logic based on the input received from the server it routes the request to different application. Hi, After much research I purchased a Reliance Netconnect broadband but to discover there pathetic customer care. I have written a my experience on my livejournal blog, http://jangid.livejournal.com/27778.html, so that others are not cheated. Pasting it here for readers' convenience. /* I had applied for Reliance Netconnect plus wireless internet service on 23rd of March. And that was the last day for getting the 2 month bundled unlimited usage (10GB) free; that is worth Rs 3500. The next day I have got a call from RCOM that I am eligible for this offer. The official also asked me if I would like to see a demonstration of the wireless device. I said yes and after seeing the demo, at my home, I agreed to purchase this. I paid Rs 3500 to the dealer for the device on 04/04/2009. I got the device and connection was enabled. Everything was good. The problem begins. Contrary to my belief that I'll get Rs 0 bill for the first two months, at end of the first month I have got a bill, of Rs 383, from RCOM. The bill amount should have been Rs 0. I have registered a complaint with them. I haven't got any response. Instead I am getting regular calls from RCOM for non payment of bills. Every time I get a call I tell them the full story. And each official agreed to resolve my issue. Now one day I planned to visit my native place, Jaipur, to meet my parents. I was hoping that my business/work will not suffer because I can work remotely using the device I purchased from RCOM. I reached Jaipur and discovered that my internet is not working. I called up the toll free number of RCOM (1 800 3000 5555) and learnt from the official that my connection is deactivated due to non payment of bill. @#$#$%&%. I also learnt that a new bill is also generated for the second month. The second bill is of Rs 1125. Again the bill amount should have been Rs 0. I again registered a complained. I was told that the problem will be resolved in 24 hours. I had registered my grievance at the Consumer Online Resource & Empowerment Centre (http://www.ccccore.co.in/ or http://www.core.nic.in/). Hello, Reliance and Tata Indicom have now come out with USB modems that provide broadband speeds theoretically upto 3.1 Mbps in major cities with National low speed roaming in other areas. A client of mine told me that his friend uses a Reliance one and clocked upto 1.5 Mbps on it. Reliance promo emails mention peak hour speeds between 512K and 1Mbps. Tata also provides a wireless router that talks wirelessly to the tower and provides a wired+wireless LAN for the office. MTNL and BSNL broadband are getting competition. Great! Now use your note/netbooks for video conferencing on the move. No more linesman telling you that your modem or wiring is bad. Hello, Today at one place I was amazed to see triband going out of control. DVDs getting downloaded in one hour, large files in minutes. It was an unlimited 512 Kbps scheme but was overclocking. In between it would come down to 600 to 700 KBytes per second, otherwise it was above 1 MBytes per sec. It was the AT&T server connection (username@a). While this utopia is in bloom since a week or two and may last a few days more, It shows that our telephone lines are capable of giving 22 Mbps which I actually saw in the new D-Link modem stats. Upload 1 Mbps and download max. 22 Mbps. Seeing is believing. Gosh! MTNL when will you open your tap to full? I am using Hathway cable internet where they bind your ip settings to your pc. If I unplug the lan cable from the pc and plug it into my laptop, I cannot browse. They are using some sort of dhcp with a static ip (I know that sounds funny - but that's what they say). When I called the helpdesk, they said what I need to do is release the ip from my machine and then renew it on my laptop. something like ipcfg release and then ipcfg renew. The guy obviously has no clue how to do it in linux. What would be the equivalent in linux. I am using debian 5 and kubuntu 9.04 on the two machines. Thanks, Sharukh. -- Dr. Sharukh K. R. Pavri. But there was no alternative available in the market. There is BSNL but they do not cover Delhi. MTNL is not providing data connections; only some value added services over 3G. I am regreting the decision and again.

Linux OS Inoperable

Hi everybody, I was introduced by Anurag, after finding out his mail in the open forum while surfing the Net to set my problem. He had suggested to be part of the mailing list which I have done, however the site refuses to open up for me for unknown reasons repeatedly stating that the the username and/or password is incorrect dspite inputtting the correct details.I have experienced a snag on my desktop which is loaded with a LINUX OS way back in 2005. In fact, the OS was installed by my friend who is terribly sick and I feel it indecent to call him for this, we are in the late fifties. One would be wondering as to what I was doing all these years, Yes, I was operating my WIN XP Pro thru the laptop which I have carried to almost all cities in India and a couple of times abroad when on duty tour. Now I am a relaxed and retired guy. This Linux OS is installed on a pc having Athlon CPU on a Asus motherboard. I used to use the PC for as much as 5 years prior to my friend installing the Linux OS on the same PC with XP home and the other day after opening the desktop I had to update all the MS prog and you well know it took me almost 5 hours, maybe more to download and install. The switch provided by my friend, a toggle switch to 'switchover' from the XP to Linux ( after shutting off the PC) and I saw it is working fine as when in a particular direction the OS switches either to XP or Linux. On opening the Linux OS I found after booting which must be taking less than a minute or slightly more faced with a login page. I appreciate my friend that he has mentioned both my login ID and password within the Linux symbol for ease of use and on punching these details the 'login failed' pops up. As I am new I was wondering if you could help in solvingin starting my Linux OS. Something like disabling the login itself or in the least to reprogram the login dialogue. Please remember- *I am a novice as far as PCs go *and use it mostly to surf,mail and IM etc. Trust I have contacted the correct persons for the advice. Grateful if one of you could help me out. hi, I have updated avsap to run on the wxPython 2.8.9.1. It is available here: svn co https://svn.nrcfosshelpline.in/public/helpline/branches/avsap avsap for those who do not know the history of avsap, it was used in production for several years by some clients of mine, was first released in perl and then later ported to python. Unfortunately in 2003, installation was extremely difficult as cool things like yum and apt-get were not there. Since not one of the thousand or so people who downloaded it was successful in installing it, I got fed up and stopped maintaining it. I will maintain and develop it if a few people show interest in using it. I think it is the only accounting software in India available in so many Indian languages (and Italian too). For this reason I have not set up a mailing list or any other support infrastructure. You may mail me if you have questions. Hi Folks, Am building a list of Applications to be presented as OSAlt (Open Source Alternatives) to frequently used commercial applications. Some of my accountant friends asked me one single question, and am finding answer for it: "Do you have anything for Tally that will work on Linux?" Since I am not from financial background and never used Tally, I didnt find a proper answer. Through Search Engine I did come across GnuCash, but dont know how it compares to Tally. Has anyone used it, so that I can lay out points on transitioning from Tally to GnuCash or any other OpenSource/Free Alternative to Tally. Bye Regards

Sorry, openerp / tinyerp does not come up as anternate to tally. Tally is a simple accounting software not constrained by erp norms like data authenticity, audit trails, interlocking controls and even data integrety. Openerp is a much more complex software and not a substitute for tally. In the normal sense, an erp is mot an accounting software. Its much more. And due to that it can't take place of accounting software. It will only work where the users WANT something much more than accounting. If he wants dell, let him go to dell.co.in otherwise there are many guys in lamington road who can give what you want. I took from solution 360. They will get you models u want. Compareindia.com is also a good place. It gives u ability to shortlist based on parameters and then compare features n price. However don't necessarily look for pc with higher ram. U can take less ram and upgrade to 4 gb on ur own. Buy ram from any external source. Hello, My family members were checking some information on google using the laptop loaded with Lenny. After some time, they got a message saying that there was a lot of trojan and 'blah blah' infection in their system and they should immediately protect it by clicking on the link provided. They called me up to ask what to do and I asked them to simply cancel it and close the window. However the window was persistent and would refuse to close. It even came to a stage where it wanted to download some exe file to protect the computer. Finally after a lot of clicking, the windows finally closed. I asked them to restart the system and clear all browsing history. After that no window has popped up in the next use. Now this is common in Windows where such popups from infected websites will download a spyware that is actually a virus disguised as an anti-virus. Getting such viruses out of the Windows systems is a real pain. They disable all admin commands too. However my worry is the persistent window that refused to go in Linux. This is mostly due to javascript enabled in the browser (Iceweasel). Luckily it was an exe file that was trying to get in and it would be useless for the Linux environment. What happens if it is a linux compatible script? Will the javascript enabling allow the script to execute? It is a little worrying. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! No Viruses No Spyware Only Freedom.

The thread subject says it all. Any suggestions? I'm primarily looking to build an el-cheapo Linux box. I dont care how low powered it is as long as it has: 1. 1 or 2 Gigabit ethernet ports 2. A display adapter 3. 1 or 2 USB ports 4. Can accommodate atleast one SATA drive 4. Runs cool and above all, is reliable. Printer problem

Hi, Back again. Puppy linux is roaring on celeron box, but having problem in printer and window share mounting. 1. I can access printer LBP1210 on XP machine. If I send a print file by smbclient it prints correctly . The print file is created on XP machine, but when I print through CUPS, it does not print but CUPS says job is completed. Cups is configured for LBP1270. Any idea... 2. I can mount a window share by smbclient, but mount -t smbfs <other parameters> fails. Any idea... Broadband connections

Hi All, Currently i have a 2-Mbps BSNL broadband connection which is terminated to our Linux Server (Fedora) which acts as the Internet gateway to our LAN users from the DSL Modem using PPPoE. Now, i want to replace this with a new 2-Mbps AIRTEL broadband connection. My queries: 1. Should i run the ADSL-SETUP again for the new connection. 2. If i add another NIC(for the new connection) and run the ADSL-SETUP, will this affect the existing connection. 3. Is there a way such that, i can configure this new Airtel connection without disturbing the existing BSNL connection and just swap the DSL modem. Thanks & Regards, George John.

We want to achieve this by automatically switching between the internet links if it fails (i.e for eg. if the BSNL link goes off, it has to take the AIRTEL link and once the BSNL link is ready, it has to switch automatically to it.) Checking the link automatically won't work all the time, as mentioned in earlier posts. But still it may work most of the time. There are scripts available which can switch the network settings in such a way that a particular configuration can be chosen from a list of options. One of the problem in using multiple network interfaces have been naming the interface reliably. Which card would be eth0 and which would be eth1? Kernel used to switch cards occasionally while initializing the network interface. This problem can be solved now with udev rules. Once the system names the interfaces correctly, a simple script can be used to initialize required interface when need arises. In my setup, I use a script which uses dialog (curses based console UI) to switch the default gateway. It uses sudo to allow a group of selected users to do this job. Using a curses based UI allows a non-technical person to do the required task without getting into the nitty-gritty of the network setup. This script can be customized to do automatic switching of the interfaces by adding special command-line options. If required, I can provide this script to anyone interested in it. Raghu

Hello, We need to get server with CentOS 5.1 for Panvel Ashram. My requirements are: 1. CPU and Mboard should capable of atleast 16G RAM. 2. CentOS5.2 (32 bit) with PAE kernel should work with it. Please suggest which server will be better for me? After searching on net, I found AMD Opteron Second generation CPUs are better choice. But I am not sure wether it supports 32bit OS. However, I had some problems getting Xen to work on it for virtualising a Windows server on the same box. So long as you are installing an OS directly on the bare metal, you should have no problems with it. You will need to consider an Inventec or Iwill server motherboard, as those are the only brands I found in the assembled server market for AMD. For the problem I faced, I had to ultimately opt for Intel Quad core Xeon processor and motherboard. Regards, Ninad

Hi Folks, Many of you must be aware of CMS applications like Joomla and Drupal. They are very strong and feature rich applications. More over they are open source. However many find it difficult to understand and customize them. Also sometimes you just require less out of the rich features they provide. Complexity of their usage again drive away non IT people who use computers only for their office activities. So the question arises as to is there any light weight, simple, yet powerful CMS application? The answer is Wordpress.... But then here's a small Correction. Wordpress is actually a Blogging application, that needs to be customized as a CMS. Hai , I have been using ubuntu 8.04 , knoppix , BOSS Linux and Puppy Linux for quite some time. I have tried Puppy Linux on a P1 / 266 MHz / 64 MB memory machine with good results. Internet Broadband connection problem

Dear All, I have a ADSL broadband connection of BSNL. The ADSL modem is connected to our Internet Server (Fedora box) to one of the NIC card(eth1), the other NIC card (eth0) is connected to our LAN switch. This Fedora box acts as the gateway machine to the Internet for our LAN. The Problem: ------------ The LAN users were not getting the Internet. I saw the PPP link was up and running on the Server and also the Modem link was ok., but I couldn't ping to their (ISP's) end. (Destination port unreachable message was coming). I called the ISP and after a while, the LAN users were able to get the Internet but during the same time, I was not able to ping to their gateway and also to their DNS IP from my Internet Server. Then when i restarted my iptables script file, i was able to ping ISP's gateway and their DNS IP too. I just want to know, when my LAN users were getting the Internet, Why I couldn't get the reply from either their (ISP's) gateway / their DNS IP. Hope someone might be able to explain me what the problem could be. Thanks in Advance, Regards, George

The install was straightforward enough, but some significant time and effort would need to be spent training the end users about permissions, groups, roles etc. I presume you have already looked at the demo at: http://demo.knowledgetree.com/login.php One issue I did not look at at all was security since it was to be deployed on an internal LAN server. If your deployment is to be accessible online, I would suggest you pay special attention to this. MTNL billing discrepancy

I am using MTNL's Triband combo offer which gives 600 mb download a month. This has been upped from 400 mb just last month. All this while, I was easily remaining within the 400 mb limit. Suddenly this month's bill shows a usage of 870 mb for march. On complaining to mtnl they said that that was the usage according to them. I usually run a check with knetworkmonitor and gkrellm and there would always be a small discrepancy between the usage shown on my machine and that shown by mtnl, where mtnl would always show slightly lower usage than on my machine. For last month gkrellm shows a usage of 560 mb as opposed to mtnl showing 870 mb. What can explan this large difference ? Btw, according to the chap I spoke to at mtnl, _it is definitely hackers_ sic !! Now that I'm keeping a watch, imagine my surprise when both my programs show download activity without a single browser window open and fetchmail having been killed !! Promoting Free Software in education in India

Many education institutes are seeking to use computers and internet. However, most reputed institutions are also constrained by limitations of low budgets and lack of IT savvy human resource. Usually suited-booted vendors do approach through "trustees', resulting in major headaches for the managers i.e Principals. There are several global efforts on "opensource". How 'free', remains to be seen. I am seriously discussing with some institutions some solutions and seek thru this email 1. list those who can provide the necessary customisation,localization,support etc. 2. suggestions for best solutions I feel this platform should not be talking about the business models and financial aspects. BJP's Akward embrace of free software

*The BJP’s awkward embrace of Free Software * ** http://www.hindu.com/2009/04/10/stories/2009041055960900.htm Deepa Kurup *The party’s discovery of the virtues of OS would appear to sit uncomfortably with its slogan “Let a hundred Bangalores bloom.” * The IT manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party has created ripples among software circles with its support for Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), and its opposition to “digital standards.” While the Kerala government has a policy that makes the use of FOSS in government and education mandatory, Tamil Nadu has implemented it in a few departments. Left parties have for long backed the Free Software movement politically. It is surprising that the BJP, with its strong pro-corporate and pro-patent leanings, should back this cause. Even as the Free Software community is celebrating this latest endorsement, sceptics among its ranks are cautious about taking the BJP’s promises at face value. Its track record, when in power at the Centre and in the States, provides grounds for these misgivings. Consider this. As late as January 2009, the BJP government in Gujarat, led by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, inked a deal with the global proprietary software giant Microsoft that includes a Microsoft-developed IT curriculum for high school students, teacher training, certification programmes, and offers free Microsoft software development tools to universities. Less than two months on, the party manifesto in its “eEducation” section declares: “We will actively promote Free and Open Source Software, including operating systems, which will introduce the habit of innovation (‘tinkering’) among students.” In fact, in 2006 the BJP government in Rajasthan signed a similar deal with Microsoft under Project Shiksha, and in 2004, the BJP-JD(S) coalition in Karnataka, tied up with proprietary giant for education and e-governance initiatives. Prabir Purkayastha of the Delhi Science Forum feels the manifesto reflects the “blinkered vision” of the BJP, which has “never taken an anti-monopoly stance.” Dr. Purkayastha points out how Free Software circles are abuzz with an interesting anomaly in L.K. Advani’s speech at the manifesto launch: “Mr. Advani referred to how impressed he was on his visit to the Microsoft Office in the U.S. He did not see the stark contradiction, as he proudly reflected on the number of Indians present there!” FOSS activists, however, hope this means increased visibility for their cause, considering a large number of National E-governance Missions are in the pipeline, for which Rs. 6000 crore has been earmarked in the 11th Five Year Plan. The 40-page document also promises to set up an “IT standards-setting body,” carving it out of the Bureau of Indian Standards, and promises all government software will conform to these “open standards.” Venkitesh Hariharan, a senior Red Hat official, says: “It is significant because so far there hasn’t been any conscious effort towards policy making. Public data and websites have been in both proprietary and open format.” Digital standards As for their new stance on “digital standards” — that is, proprietary claims on algorithms and software programmes — the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, notably, was the first to amend the Patent Act in March 1999 and in June 2002 as part of the WTO agreement under Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). The seemingly innocuous phrase “software per se,” which the NDA government introduced into section 3(K) of the Indian Patents Act, was a loophole through which software could be brought under a patenting regime from a copyright one. According to Dr. Purkayastha, the amendments had nothing to do with TRIPS which does not even include software or computer programmes in its ambit. “A 2004 ordinance provided for patenting of computer programmes used in combination with hardware. Later, while in the opposition the BJP opposed the bill — even though it was virtually drafted by their Commerce Minister Arun Jaitley. It was presented without any changes,” he says. This was revoked in 2005 by the United Progressive Alliance under pressure from the Left. Corporates such as IT majors Infosys and TCS have long lobbied for patents. When contacted, a senior spokesperson from Microsoft, a company that will be hit hardest by an OS regime, told *The Hindu* that the company is “encouraged by the focus on IT by political parties,” describing the policy of the Government of India as one of “technology neutrality.” The BJP’s discovery of the virtues of OS would appear to sit uncomfortably with its slogan “Let a hundred Bangalores bloom.” Rahul

Facebook & Hotmail on Ubuntu

Hi, A friend has a strange problem that I have been unable to solve, so I thought I'd canvas for suggestions here. Since the last week or so, he has been unable to log in to Facebook or Hotmail from Ubuntu. He has a dual-boot machine with Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows XP. He is connected via a MTNL Triband connection. Both sites still work fine in XP. Other sites work fine in Ubuntu. He's tried several alternate browsers besides Firefox, including Opera, SeaMonkey, etc. but has the same problem there. Sometimes the login page on Hotmail loads up, but logging in doesn't produce any response. In Facebook again, sometimes the login page loads, but doesn't work. In SeaMonkey, sometimes logging in to Facebook does proceed to the home page, but then no other links work. I have tried googling, but no satisfactory solution showed up. Suggestions included clearing the cache/cookies (no effect & in any case multiple browsers makes this unlikely), changing DNS servers (tried both MTNL & OpenDNS, and in any case they're the same servers as set under Windows), and even checking the Java install (I really doubt MS uses Java on the Hotmail page, but I tried it anyway). Ping times of both sites seem normal. Any further lines of inquiry would be appreciated. Thanks, Chirag Wazir http://chirag.freeshell.org

Hello, Are you frustrated with network setups in KDE? Do you spend long hours trying to figure out just how to get your network device up in KDE? Are you fed up with knetwork-manager not displaying your network devices? Have you spent sleepless nights trying to figure out knetwork-manager but met with no success due to unavailability of proper configuration files? Well! Don't fret, don't fume, don't bang your head on the wall, just throw out knetworkmanager and install wicd. Reboot your system and you will get a network icon in the system tray. On opening its window your devices will be listed. Next to each device, on the left is a tiny arrow button that almost gets unnoticed but clicking on that arrow will drop down details for setting up each device, wired or wireless. For wpa wireless setup, in the preferences section select the correct wireless driver. If one doesen't work, try all others till your connection gets established. In my Acer Travelmate 2428, for Lenny, the Intel 2200 device used the ipw2200 driver with a manually added firmware but in wicd, instead of 'ipw', I had to use 'wext' to get proper authenticaton, so once you set your passphrase and encryption type (wep, wpa, ....) try out all drivers if the default does not work. -- Regards, Rony. MySQL encrypted passwords..

Hi Guys, I am working on an application which needs to connect to MySQL database for updating/insertion etc. For the application to pickup the username/password I've created a config file somewhere on the system which looks like this: <snip> [mysqld] user=root password=mypassword port=3306 </snip> Problem is that this file can be read by root on that server and my password pretty much known to anyone who has root access. Is there anyway I can keep the password in encrypted format and still connect to mysql database? . Just to give an example of what I am looking at, in openldap you can generate a password in encrypted format using slappasswd -t {MD5} -s mypassword and store it in your slapd.conf file. Even if someone does get access to slapd.conf, still s/he cannot decrypt the password very easily. Please note that I cannot hard code the password into my application, since the root password for MySQL is subject to change without notice to me. TIA, Chiragz

Hello, Is there anywhere I can get a database of the present candidates standing for elections? I tried the Election Commission website (http://eci.nic.in) but they do not have a download. All that exists there is a .net form with postbacks, and it looks like a pain to scrape. IBN does have some data, but it seems incomplete with a lot of parties and candidates missing. HP lj1007 printer not working in ubuntu

Hi All, As the subject of this post shows, I'm using Ubuntu Linux 8.04 / 8.10 on which I've connected HP LaserJet P1007 printer with the USB port. The printer is getting detected in the system but when I shoot any document to the printer, the prints does not printed on the printer. The documents get spooled out of the system & shows that, it is printed successfully on the printer, but it is not printed If I connect another USB printer like HP LaserJet 3005 on the same system, then it can print on that printer( on 3005). Now my old folks are left without Internet. So I'm thinking of adding a redundant line. Reliance has cabling but I was burnt the last time I used their services. They're supposed to have improved since then but I dont want to fall into *that* trap once again. With key parties from both the left and the right end of the political spectrum endorsing FOSS, the Congress is left as the only major national party which is yet to formally take a position on FOSS. If not, there could be permission problems in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file. The ssh daemon doesn't allow using that file if it is not well protected from other users. Try the following (assuming the user to be B) on the server where sshd is running: chmod 750 ~/.ssh/ chown B.root ~/.ssh/ chmod 640 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys chown B.root ~/.ssh/authorized_keys As suggested in other posts, expect is needed to write scripts using interactive programs like telnet and ftp. Debian install query

I finally decided to ditch Kubuntu due to multile problems. I tried Mandriva and was completely floored by the install progress. It offered me the option of using ndiswrapper for my wifi card right during the install and the card came up automatically after the install. Clean interface. But I don't want to start a new learning curve right now. But it's definitely going into a vmware vm soon. So back to good old debian. First I got the netinst cd and then tried the debain-kde cd. So far so good. It asked for the isl3886 firmware from a new medium but that was that. The wifi card did not work after the install. Not debian's fault because I haven't been able to get the card working with anythng but ndiswrapper. Even though this was a 'full' cd, the install insisted on downloading a hell of a lot of files (more than 50 or so). Then after the full install was over and I had rebooted and ran apt-update and apt-get upgrade, it wanted to delete almost 40 files using apt-get auto-remove. If I try to install without using a net mirror, the sources.list is bare except for the cdrom line. Now I want to install debian on another machine at a different location. Seeing as how I've already dowloaded all these files on one machine, how can I use this to avoid downloading them again for the second install. What are the options available ? What I was thinking is install without a net mirror, and then copy over the sources.list and the contents of /var/cache/apt/archives to the new machine and then run apt-get update and upgrade. The second machine is at my clinic and I cannot afford to mess with it too much. Many times flamers (we know who you are) think nothing of wasting public resources, others' time, and polluting public forums with things best not said. Since their statements are not strictly on the foul side of the moderation guidelines, IMO, they cannot be blocked from the list. In any case that's a dangerous trend. So what do you and I do? Do we put up with their tasteless emails, do we allow them to spread their ill cheer to us across the pipes? There is still something we can do. It's called cold treatment. Flamers are usually after recognition and attention. (Begin fictionalised quote) "I'm important! I can string a sentence together! I've been ignored all my life! YOU CAN'T IGNORE ME NO MORE! I CAN WIN TOO! YES I CAN! NO, REALLY! Here-- no, don't look away! Hey, LOOK AT ME! I have my worth, really! If you won't admire me, I'll FLAME YOU! I'm cool! I'm not worthless, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not! LOOOOOOK AT ME, WOOOOOAAAAAAH!" (End fictional quote) Flamers usually self-destruct if we give them the cold treatment. This is well-known, though it takes time. Even hardened prisoners usually come quiet at the prospect of solitary confinement. These flamers aren't evil. Let us isolate them. Let them shout their inanities to silence. They need a captive audience. But we refuse to be captive. Let us deny them the attention they crave, and watch them shrivel and shrink away. All we need is to stick to it.

I do not know the persons in a recent flamewar, one of whom called the other an 'asshole' and the other, who apparently because of extreme vituperativeness in another flamewar has been blocked from the list. So, purely because of the use of the expletive, I also vote in favour of expelling the member who used it from the linuxers list. No matter who you are, no matter how powerful you are in the little Indian FOSS frogpond, you cannot get away with something like this or, can you? Guess that depends on the forum. And even usually dormant members do no like to get cusswords in their mailbox. If others too believe in the one person one vote principle, they should vote in this matter. Using Clive to convert youtube videos to audio mp3

Hello, After attending Rajeev's video conferencing demo at Directi, I was inspired to try out new ways to use clive. Clive is a utility to download youtube videos and convert them using ffmpeg to mp4 videos to play in the popular players. The simple way to use clive is 'clive video_url' in the terminal. This results in an mp4 video getting stored in the current directory in which clive is run. However I wanted to convert the live videos to audio mp3 only. On the net there is no mention of how to use clive to do it. The man page of clive has one option '-w' to automatically write a config file which can then be edited. Run 'clive -w' to create this file. The file is created in your home directory under .clive/config. Now edit this config file and make 2 changes. 1) ## Path to the ffmpeg program (e.g. "/usr/local/bin/ffmpeg -y -i %i %o") path_ffmpeg="/usr/bin/ffmpeg -y -i %i %o" Uncomment the path_ffmpeg line to tell clive about the location of ffmpeg ( This is important ) 2) ## Uncomment to re-encode to FORMAT ("mpg", "avi", ..) ## Requires also path_ffmpeg reencode_format="mp3" Uncomment the reencode line and add mp3 in the "" quotes. This was a blind shot that worked. Clive is mainly a video utility. Save the file and now simply run 'clive video_url' and you first get the video.mp4 file. As soon as it is downloaded clive shows a message that it is converting it to video.mp4.mp3 Thats all. Your mp3 is ready to rock. As I had earlier downoaded only mp4 videos, I was looking for a way to use ffmpeg to convert them to mp3. From the man page options the following command was assembled using trial and error and it works. 'ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -acodec mp3 -ab 160k video.mp3' The -i specifies the input file, -acodec specifies the audio output codec and -ab sets the audio bit rate in bits/sec. -- Regards, Rony. One rule is to figure out all the proxy sites and address and feed them to blocked sites but that process doesn't look good and easy manageable. [Hardware] How much is too much?

Hello, I am curious to know how many client machines can the MTNL triband routers practically support in a LAN in order to give decent internet connectivity to all? There is a LAN network where there are around 7 machines using static ips (not LInux) and the triband router is the gateway machine also attached to the LAN. When connected directly to a machine the internet connectivity is good but when all machines are up internet takes a long time to resolve and speeds are in bursts. When it keeps searching for the web page or there is no connectivity, one cannot even log into the router. Pinging the router is fine. The router too has been replaced by MTNL. The entire setup is spread across 4 floors. Initially the LAN wiring was suspected but the crimping of the router cable was done again and otherwise, internal file sharing works perfectly. I am suspecting that the router gets overloaded trying to NAT so many requests, given its tiny architecture. Should I install a separate router to this LAN? Login page of HDFCSec not opening

Hi! For the past few days, I'm not being able to access the login page of my online stock trading website which is www.hdfcsec.com The login page url is https://trade.hdfcsec.com When I click on the login button on the main site, the login page tries to open but the status bar keeps showing "Connected to trade.hdfcsec.com..." indefinitely but the page does not loads up. I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.17 under Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn) on my laptop and Firefox 3 under Fedora Core 10 on my desktop. Both machines are connected to the internet through bsnl dataone broadband connection and I'm using Netgear DG834G adsl modem-cum-router in dhcp mode. The desktop is connected through ethernet and the laptop connects on wireless. I tried accessing the page from Firefox/IE runnning under Vista on my laptop but I'm facing the same problem there as well. I tried accessing the login page from one of my friend's machine who's got the same broadband connection but a different modem (huawei smartx882 connected via ethernet with static ip setup) with ubuntu 8.04 installed on his machine and the page opens just fine at his place using Firefox/Opera. We have all been following his accomplishments in transforming the technology program in DC and have watched in excitement as more and more capabilities have been rolled out to serve the city and its citizens. We have followed reports of bold moves he put in place to ensure technology programs deliver. We have read about his new approaches to technology portfolio management and watched as he discussed the leap ahead he delivered to his enterprise by his audacious, courageous use of Google Apps and other cloud-based solutions. If you are not one of those familiar with Vivek, here is a short bio: VivekKundra is the CTO for the District of Columbia where he leads an organization of over 600 staff that provides technology services and leadership for 86 agencies, 38,000 employees, residents, businesses, and 14 million annual visitors. He brings to the role of CTO a diverse record that combines technology and public policy experience in government, private industry, and academia. Previously, Vivek served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia, the first dual cabinet role in the state's history. In the private sector, Vivek led technology companies serving national and international customers. Earlier he served as Director of Infrastructure Technology for Arlington, Virginia. He also taught classes on emerging and disruptive technologies at the University of Maryland. Since Vivek became District CTO, he has been honored with major IT awards. In 2008, the MIT Sloan CIO Symposium recognized him among outstanding IT innovators. A point that struck me was his leadership through principles. Three key ones he articulated were: 1) Leveraging commercial technology, 2) Driving transparency, and 3) Rethinking notions of IT governance. Vivek and I just finished a phone call where we discussed these and other items in more detail. Here is a bit more on his approach. *1) Leveraging commercial technology:* Commercial radios and cell phones allowed a rapid enhancement of the tactical communications infrastructure of the DC workforce, including the police workforce. Police squad cars are also now equipped with commercial, but toughened, laptops. Commercial web technology has been leveraged in ways that leaped ahead of old clunky office automation and also enable rapid development and mashups. *2) Driving transparency and engaging citizens: * Technology impediments to information access and information sharing were eliminated in ways that enable citizens to see how government decisions are being made. Data was also exposed in ways that enabled mashups and agile programing/development. Examples include DCs digital public square <http://dps.dc.gov/> and Apps for Democracy efforts. *3) Rethinking notions of IT governance:* Totally new, innovative ways to manage IT portfolios were created and used to ensure all stakeholders could evaluate the technology program and better make informed decisions on when to terminate programs and where to invest more money. Chief among these innovations was an approach to portfolio management that replicates a stock market trading floor. More important, however is the relentless focus on performance and innovation to support performance. Beside rethinking these notions of governance Vivek also took measures to smartly watch/reduce/reprioritize IT costs. I asked Vivek for thoughts that might be relevant to technologists who have set their sites on careers where they can deliver results. Many of us would like to follow in his footsteps. I wondered, if there is a particular computer programing language we should all be learning now? Should we be diving into Python? That's hot now. And what about databases? MySQL and Hadoop are all the rage. The thoughts I got back from Vivek were incredibly insightful and far more relevant than the simplistic question I asked. V: Technology is important, and we do need to know technology. But in these very exciting times where Moore's law pushes us all forward it is actually more important to be able to quickly learn new technology rather than focus on one and only one. This is the beauty of the new world of technology. There is always something to learn. We should also always remember that the reason to learn is the mission. To an enterprise CTO, technology by itself is worthless. Technology only has value if it addresses business problems and drives business success. Therefore technologists must have an ability to translate between the worlds of mission needs and technology and need an ability to rapidly learn and deeply understand both. I asked Vivek for his intention for sharing his models and methods, since they have clearly delivered success in DC. He is doing quite a bit there so all of us who would like more info have plenty of ways to learn more: V: The DC CTO site at http://octo.dc.gov provides links to many of the ongoing activities of the office and for those who would like more on the models that produce the results we link to policies, guidelines and procedures. We also provide information on how our governance process works. But additionally we host visits to our office by interested parties and have begun blogging about them. In another effort we hope will help move the models forward we are pressing ahead with plans to turn our stock market approach to portfolio management into an open model and will open source the code that makes it work, which should help drive more innovation there. Speaking of innovation, Vivek seems to have found a way to accelerate innovation, which is something all CTOs are interested in doing. I asked him for his thoughts on where to look for innovation. Another interesting reply: V: You can look for innovation many places, but remembering that necessity is the mother of invention you should keep an eye open for places that innovate because they really need to. I always keep an eye on the developing world and am so incredibly amazed at the tech innovation there. Enterprise IT does not mean that every program and project must be delivered with huge budgets and huge staffs and the incredible innovations coming out of the developing world prove that time and time again. I'm excited and enthused about developments like cell phone voting in Estonia, electronic census that works in Chili, fishing villages around the world using instant direct data to plan movement. Innovation occurs many places, but some of the greatest lessons for innovation are coming from the developing world. I asked Vivek about how to find balance between setting standards and enabling innovation: V: Standards are important, but if a standard gets in the way of innovation kill it. Use standards that enable innovation. This is the role of the CTO. Vivek also offered thoughts on social networks. V: In seeking ways to make your cycles of innovation move faster, never underestimate the power of social networking tools and the networks you can build with them. Facebook is the example most talked about but there are many others including networks built around ecommerce like eBay and Amazon. I believe we should not only embrace them to enable the power of social networking but to help us leverage, in a large way, the IT infrastructure of these platforms. The new generations today are making maximum use of these platforms and I view this as a very optimistic point. As for me, I view the results of Vivek Kundra and his models as optimistic points. The great thing about being a CTO is the learning never stops in this field and Vivek is a great teacher we should all be learning from. Many of the points mentioned in the FOSS Manifesto for India that we put up online last week have been incorporated in this document. This document was unveiled by none other than Shri. LK Advani, the BJP's candidate for Prime Minister. I did a quick read of the 40 page document and am impressed with how thorough and comprehensive it is. As a long time supporter of free and open source software, I am delighted to see a major Indian political party endorse it. However, I am even more delighted to see that this endorsement is rooted in a comprehensive vision for India's development. A big chunk of the credit for this document should go to Shri. Sudheendra Kulkarni (an alumnus of IIT Bombay) and Shri Prodyut Bora (an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad). Shri Kulkarni was advisor to Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee when Vajpayee was prime Minister of India and Shri Bora is Head of the IT Cell of the BJP. I was happy to see that the Digital Colonization theme that my friend, Jaijit Bhattacharya of Sun talks about has been incorporated in this document. Apart from the FOSS Manifesto, some of my key passions on open standards (that we don't pay for standards like weights and measures in the physical world, so why should we pay for standards in the digital world?) have been reflected. Also, as a co-founder of IndLinux.org which we started in 2000 in an attempt to bridge the digital divide, I am happy to see that the BJP has promised to create a National Mission for Indian Language Computing. The CPI(M), another national party in India has always been a strong supporter of our stand on open source, open standards and our fight against software patents. We are hopeful that other political parties will also take cognizance of the FOSS Manifesto and incorporate the same into their IT plans for India. With the country scheduled to go to polls next month, we now have a broad consensus emerging around the use of open source and open standards. This is great news for all of us who believe in free and open source software!

Hi, Sorry for not posting the full informations. 1. The DHCP server is running on rhel-4. 2. What I meant by machine goin offline was that they are off the network without an ip showing IP conflict. DHCP issues on network.

Hi, Linux DHCP issues are getting a problem. I have around 100 machines on the network where most of them are windows and some linux. If a client goes offline and then comes back most of the time there is a IP conflict.. I have never faced this issue on my home network though. Lately we are doing a static ip with each client to avoid this. Does anybody here faced this issue. And what could be the reason.. How does Open Source guys earn there bread and butter?

Hi All, I am new to GNU/Linux and Open Source world. I had seen lots of open source stable projects on internet, which anybody can download, modify and sell to anybody. Now the question arises; if a *PERSON A* develops a stable and good project as an Open Source and upload it over the internet and the *PERSON B* from some other country downloads and modify it with his name as an author (basically he is stealing someone's code) and sell it to some company to make money out of it. Serial mouse not working under FC10

Hi! I recently installed FC10 on my desktop PC. Everything's running fine expect for my logitech 3-button serial mouse which is not getting recognised under FC10. In earlier versions, it used to work by manually editing the xorg.conf file as below: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device" "/dev/ttyS0" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection However, in FC10 there is no xorg.conf file by default. So, as per instructions that I found on the net, I created xorg.conf file by giving the below command: Xorg -configure :1 and manually edited the mouse section accordingly. But still no luck. Then I tried using the system-config-display utility but there is no mouse section in it. Uncle Google also has thrown his hands up! Please help! Regards, Sarfaraz

This is a first draft and I have written this keeping in mind that most Indian politicians would not be familiar with FOSS. Hence, the usage of simple language that anyone can understand. If you feel that any section here needs improvement, please let me know. Comments/suggestions welcome. venky ==== A draft FOSS manifesto for Indian political parties The Free and Open Source Software community in India calls upon political parties to make FOSS usage and promotion a central part of the IT, e-government and education plans in their election manifestos. FOSS is software which is liberally licensed to grant the right of users to study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code. The open, inclusive and participatory nature of FOSS is a natural fit for the vibrant traditions of Indian democracy. Since software is the foundation of the knowledge economy, India's IT infrastructure should be built on FOSS and not on closed, proprietary software systems. We believe that encouragement of FOSS will result in: * Development of the domestic IT industry * Creation of jobs * Encouragement of skills development and upgradation * Enable localization of software to Indian languages * Reduction of India's dependence on monopolistic proprietary software vendors * Encourage the usage of open standards * Bridging the digital divide * Rapid modernization and computerization of India's education system * Technology upgradation of India's Small and Medium Enterprises * Efficient usage of budget outlays for e-government * Faster technology development through Collaborative Innovation We call upon political parties in India to support the Indian FOSS community by: 1. Encouraging the use of FOSS in Indian education system. This will inculcate the virtues of collaboration, sharing and participation in children from a very young age and make computerization of schools affordable. 2. Eliminating proprietary software from the education syllabus and making the syllabus vendor-neutral, thus giving teachers and students the choice of software that suits their budgets and needs. 3. Using FOSS in e-government to the maximum possible extent and ensuring that government tenders are open and do not favor proprietary software vendors. All software developed with tax-payers money should be released under a FOSS license to encourage collaboration; and the sharing of code and best practices. 4. Mandating the usage of open standards that are free from royalties and vendor lock-in so that the interaction between the government and citizens happens in a free and open manner befitting a democracy. 5. Encouraging freely shareable, FOSS based knowledge repositories like Wikipedia in Indian languages. 6. Encouraging the usage of the collaborative model of FOSS in scientific research. Science thrives on collaboration and the sharing of knowledge. The current trend of privatizing knowledge leads to secrecy in science and reduces collaboration. We must use the FOSS model based on collaboration, community and shared ownership of knowledge to spark a renaissance of knowledge in India. 7. Eliminating software and business method patents that have lead to huge amounts of litigation in developed countries. Indian traditions have held that knowledge grows by sharing and diminishes when hoarded. Patents on software and business methods grant undue monopolies on ideas and prevent independent invention and the sharing of knowledge. India has one of the most youthful populations in the world and it is important that they have access to the tools with which the information society is built. The freedom to modify the source code, the ability to share knowledge and build communities make Free and Open Source Software the best, long-term model for India's development. We therefore urge all political parties to encourage the usage of FOSS for India's development.

Hi I am sachin Puri I am new linux user. I have following observation in case of vim editor and have some question regarding it so whole scenario is like given below . What I have done and observe Case 1 - I set all permissions (rwx) for owner on parent directory. (I am the owner.) $ ls -ld dir drwxrwxrwx 2 sachin sachin 4096 Mar 7 13:42 dir and has structhure like below /home/sachin/dir/text.text In this case when editing the file "text.text", vim creates a temporary swap file in that directory. When the file is saved, the swap file is deleted and the inode number of "text.text" changes (it is different from the inode number of the original file and also the swap file). Case 2 - Write permission is removed from parent directory $ ls -ld dir dr-xr-xr-x 2 sachin sachin 4096 Mar 7 13:42 dir In this case when editing the file "text.text", vim creates a temporary swap file in /var/tmp. After saving the file, its inode does not change. This means that in case 2, vim is updating the contents of the file in-place. I have found that OpenOffice.org also updates the contents in-place, irrespective of the parent directory permissions. I wish to know why does vim create a new file in case 1. Wouldn't it be a costly operation, especially in case of large files? In short, which method is more efficient to implement for any file editor? Please note that in all cases, all permissions are set on the file itself (i.e. text.text). I am just manipulating the permissions of the parent directory. thanks in advance

Dear All, I am new to linux and am using a Linpus Linux Lite which uses a desktop version. I was wanting to install AVG antivirus. Is it necessary? When I tried to install it it asked for the administrator password, which I dont have. I tried to use Terminal to install it but it wanted me to login as root. I couldnt as I did not have the password. I am using an acer aspire one notebk. Anybody can help. I am happy to use linux and dont want to switch back to windows. Thanks Ashok Sinha

Installed Lenny on Acer Aspire One

Hello, I installed Debian Lenny on the Acer Aspire One.Lenny is ideally suited for netbooks as it has a lighter foot print with good looks. A week ago I had already installed Lenny on my pen drive for testing. Lenny DVD has a superb boot menu that lets you choose your desktop without having to remember the exact syntax. (A minor error in the older method meant that instead of KDE, you end up with Gnome. I had selected KDE. Those who do not like KDE4.1 will love this older KDE. Lenny comes in a down to earth build yet good hardware support. Everything worked fine except wireless and thats where this site comes in handy. I used the mad-wifi drivers using the apptitude method given in the link. Netbooks may rob you of privacy

Dear Sir, With reference to your article in HT on netbook security. The first impression one gets from it is that it is aimed at hitting the netbook sales. If the authors really had a proper understanding of operating systems and security issues related to them they would have never posted such an article. Neither the bigger notebooks nor the smaller netbooks come pre-installed with any firewalls or anti-virus software. The anti-virus that is pre-installed on some notebooks that have an operating system pre-installed is only a trial version which will expire anyway. Antivirus software slows down any system and the problem is not limited to netbooks only. By the way the netbook has a 1.6 GHz. processor and a 1 GB RAM and a 100+ GB hard disk, which is quite sufficient for a normal anti-virus software. I happen to use one with an anti-virus installed. What about the expensive business cell phones that are fully net enabled and are used to surf the web, check mails, blog and chat? Is there any scope for putting any of the standard antivirus software in them? The most important point missed out by the authors is that security issues arise from faulty operating systems that are breeding grounds for software viruses. Since these operating systems are closed and do not allow any security audit of their program code by outsiders, there is no way one can know their inherent flaws and predict as well as prevent future security problems. In order to overcome this limitation of closed code software, there are Free(dom) software operating systems that are openly audited by experts outside the core developer group and the general public. This enhances the immunity level of these operating systems to such an extent that they do not require any antivirus software. They come preloaded with security measures in various stages that prevent virus files from executing in the system or propagating to other computers on the network. The good news is that these Free(dom) operating systems can now be installed on the netbooks too and users can make full utilisation of the hardware resources for their own work. I sincerely hope HT will let its readers know more about these secure Free(dom) operating systems like Debian, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva etc. -- Regards, Rony. Hello all, Remember me? If you're an admin you must be wondering how in the world did this guy get off moderation? It was simple. I was waiting and watching if some sense prevailed on your part but unfortunately not. Anyway, this email isn't to insult anybody. It is a polite reminder that please do not mess around just because you have been given the power here. It can be just as easily be taken away / circumvented :) I was unjustly shut up on this list for having my opinions. Some stranger insulted me and I stood up for myself. Thats all I did. I was referenced in several threads and I merely replied to them and I'm shut up which is incredibly stupid and has encroached on my rights as an individual. This is an open forum and you cannot shut me up. It is a violation of my freedom of speech and expression. If you shut me up then you have to shut everyone else up who referenced me. Other people too were involved in blatant name calling and acted as proxies. That was a low, unprofessional thing to do. I did not see any action being taken against them. I believe you've misused your power as admins or you've used them in ignorance which is pretty much the same thing. None of you actually followed the threads that I was attacked in or know what really happened. Mr.Dinesh Shah / linuxer-owners did not respond to my emails and no amount of reasoning showed you guys the irrationality of your decisions. I have been and admin & moderator on several forums. I've been in such situations. The reasonable thing to do is warn all members and put *all* of them on moderation. Singling one out of the many is wrong. If anybody should've been punished, it was the person who provoked the whole flame war. Lastly, to all who are / were / will be in a position of authority. I would argue that, whether it is open source or proprietary software one of the biggest ticket items when it comes to information technology on that $71 billion dollars is the money the federal government spends on contracts and contracts that, frankly, some of them haven't performed very well and there have not been consequences. And, we need to become serious and tough on those contractors that are not going to deliver. What is the story on the Indian Patent office's take on software patents. After all the noise they seem to be ominously silent. Did anyone attend CII –DIPP Nationwide Intellectual Property Rights -Awareness Campaign held on 3rd March in Mumbai. Btw my email to M. W. Dhumane dated 26/8/08 specifically pointing out some software patents (217179, 210794, 217913, 220214) issued by IPO has received no response. The following are the guidelines to be followed by the ISPs as per trai on urgent basis: - 1. Provide adequate information to subscribers regarding Internet/broadband services being offered and marketed as a good business practice. 2. Provide information regarding contention ratios (number of users competing for the same bandwidth) adopted for different services by service providers in their tariff plans submitted to TRAI, manual of practice, call centers and on their websites." 3. Publish contention ratio for different Internet/broadband services on their website quarterly to facilitate subscribers to take informed decision. 4. Ensure availability of minimum required bandwidth in their network according to maximum contention ratio suggested by TRAI for different services based on number of subscribers. Since guidelines are recommendations, and in this case, it means there aren't any deadlines to meet by the ISPs to start adhering to these guidelines. Moreover, it is mentioned in the guidelines issuance notification that "any regulatory burden in present economic environment of Internet sector may increase the cost of service provisioning and will adversely impact the growth of broadband. The Authority prefers least regulatory intervention while providing greater flexibility to service providers to ensure better quality of service to internet/broadband subscribers." Therefore, subscribers cannot expect ISPs to be in a hurry to enlighten subscribers with the nitty-gritty of why they cannot be assured better broadband services.

Your best option is to use an application proxy server like Delegate (http://www.delegate.org). It handles a lot of protocols. But I don't think it is _free_ software even though the sources are available and is being distributed freely. Raghu

High Resolution video conferencing.

Hello, There is an advt. of CISCO where a group of people from China and Some European country come face to face virtually on huge screens. Is this really possible or just trick photography? If possible, it would not only help in overseas conferencing but also in huge office complexes where one has to travel a long distance or even a few floors to get to the boss's cabin or some place else. The normal video conferencing has a very small screen where one cannot even move one's head or it would get out of the visible area. With high resolution videos, a huge life size image is possible and groups of people can talk to each other. It has a fantastic effect and looks really good. Keeping aside the cost and availability of net bandwidth, is this possible with Linux. If it is not very expensive, could we actually setup a prototype in HBCSE during our forthcoming GLUG meets over the months? A LAN cable should provide good bandwidth for intraoffice video conferencing. We can link up two classrooms or the lab and classroom. We already have a projector and a 17/19" LCD screen. Hi, Im planning to buy a new laptop, and i intend to use Linux as the operating system i use on the machine. My old latop had Via chipset in it, and therefore i have faced lots of trouble in making Linux work on it, so this time i want to make sure that the machine I buy, would fully support it. So, i need some recommendations as to which laptop would be the best as far as Linux support goes. I am planning to buy a Dell Inspiron 1525. Is it the right choice or should i consider something else ? Thank You

Beware of buying 'blind'. You might end up with a laptop where the webcam and the card reader will not work. That can be a piss-off, though the rest of the hardware will work fine.

Mediawiki - How to get maintenance tags?

Hi, While putting up Rony's article, I felt the need to put up a maintenance tag[1] for the page to get attention to the requirements. I went through the Mediawiki guidelines to see that they have a defined template for it.. What would be the best way to use that template on ILUG-BOM wiki or any other personal wiki for that matter? 1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Template_messages/Maintenance -- If all men were brothers, would you let one marry your sister?
