Hi All, First of all Disclaimer: The person writing this mail doesn't know how to write short mails. So, a request to please cooperate with him and forgive his ignorance. Then the problem: I am having a piece of hardware called the Wipro Ezynet Server. This is primarily a Linux based solution for cybercafes. It does not have port for connecting a VDU. I has two Ethernet interfaces, supposed to be remotely controlled using a web browser and does not have ports to connect the keyboard and mouse. The problem I am facing now is that the hard disk has crashed. I have misplaced the cd's and manual of the system. I have replaced the hard disks and now want to use it as an Internet gateway to connect our office LAN to the net. I don't know what to do and how to go about it. Once I tried loading RHL9 on to it. I took out the mbd and connected a pci vga card and succeeded in loading RHL. It has a small socket for connecting a kbd using a connector similar to the ones for mouse we used to have in P-I system. It has some kind of a card used to display the booting info on an LCD screen. The moment I reconnected the card, it just went bust. The card seems to know only the OS it came packaged with and seems to be the loader ( like lilo or grub) for the OS. Anyone have a better idea, how to get it up and running without connecting a VDU, KBD and MOUSE. Pls let me know. If required I will give the complete specs and picture of the system and what is inside. Without the LCD/card, we will not be able to know whether it has booted up or not and with it, it only looks for the OS it cam with. regards, rc

recover from kernel panic.....

i have mandrake linux installed but all of a sudden it is giving me a kernel panic msg as below ------------------------------------------------- during normal booting mode : Kernel panic:no init found. try passing init=option to kernel ------------------------------------------------- during failsafe mode i get other error as below: Kernel panic: :VFS:unable to mount rootfs on hda5. ------------------------------------------------- why it gives two different msg in different modes.how do i recover it.does this happen du to some data loss during power failure or some other reason. __________________________________ Discover Yahoo! Dont know why that is?? Nokia having just emerged out of the dark cave, are testing the waters. The recent Nokia "patent gift" to the kernel is a case in point. As RMS said it seems to be one of the companies who try to give as little as possible in exchange for a cave full of FLOSS riches. The opening of it's patents itself was probably brought about by it's inability to distribute patent restricted code in the linux kernel, since this would place restrictions on a recipient and hence invalidate their licence to distribute the kernel. Hi guys, i guess you all must have heard about Nokia 770 its a Linux based Internet tablet that can use bluetooth Wi-FI to connect to the net n has a host of other feature. And its dedicated for Internet i.e. no phone. For developers interested in it, it uses a development platform called maemo(www.maemo.org<http://www.maemo.org>). That is basically GTK+ only but with some modifications to make it optimum for the mobile device. SO most of your GTK+ code should work wtht significant changes. CHeck out the maemo site it has a cool developer tutorial. But one thing struck me about the nokia main site for the device( www.nokia.com/770 <http://www.nokia.com/770>) it does not even mention the term Linux or Open source. Dont know why that is?? In fact that is how most hosts run. Just switch on and it will boot to it's default run level. If u need any additional services just add them to the default run level. rgds jtd

samba and permission

I'm using Fedora Core 1. I would like to mount a windows shared folder at fstab and allowing normal user to have read-write permissions. I have tried //192.168.0.1/linux /mnt/my_network_share/linux smbfs username=myusername,password=mypassword, default 0 0 //192.168.0.1/linux /mnt/my_network_share/linux smbfs username=myusername,password=mypassword,rw,uid=root,gid=root 0 0 Both of them will mount the drive, but normal users won't be able to write? How to i make it with write permission? What am i missing? Komal

AMD / VIA C3 it is for personal use until the air clears up. http://www.digitmag.co.uk/news/index.cfm?NewsID=4915 Using a mobo with the above will probably leave you exposed in a zillion ways. Even turning off the power is of no help. But for a private corporate network it has the potential to make the admins life interesting (maybe easy?). rgds jtd

Well Interoperability is a problem, but its not cos of Linux or openoffice in particular. Can openoffice help it if M$ hasn't released the specs of the .doc format (atleast i couldnt find it even after extensive search on google, if any has then please let me know), besides openoffice atleast publishes the format it uses unlike M$ who like to "lock in" their customers. Interoperability will always be an issue as long as people are seeing to it that it is.Atleast with linux, its "open" about all formats and implementations. Even if others r not keen to reveal their implementation atleast the format should be revealed. What if the company were no longer in business, what happens to all the stuff thats "locked" now. This topic was touched my Dr. Nagarjuna also at the GLUG meet before this one (the one in which we had the HURD demo) The same argument applies to almost all (probably all) M$ products. So as long as you choose a closes solution u cannot complain about interoperability (according to me). Anand

SIS651 chipset story

A year and 2 months before i bought a compaq s5030il which has sis651 chipset 128 ram and p42.6ghz pre loaded with turbo linux.In the first week it started with sudden hangup. Believe me Redington replaced the motherboard three times and the fourth time i took it to there office and i don't know what they did but it started working fine for a month and again now the same problem but i am left with no warranty on the system. The vendor even said it was because linux. There is no error at syslog, kernel log. Windows xp gives system error(102) and when error submitted states a Hardware failure. A reboot and the system may be fine for hours or sometimes in 20 to 30 minutes it will hang again. Can somebody help me with what could be the possibilty. Device manager shows everything fine. Is there any software like pc-doctor which can diagnose this problem which is a freeware in linux.Or can somebody guide me on this. I don't want to call redington guys because the maximum they would do is again replace the motherboard which they have done before. I've been having a similar peculiar problem, but the need for frequent rebooting has pointed me to the possible reason for failure: one hard disk (which just happens to be my system disk, with both Win98 and RH) keeps going off. On opening the box I find this disk is quite hot. My guess is it's heading towards failure. I plan to mirror it onto another disk at some point and save my data. It is definitely not an OS problem. -- Vickram

All my systems continue to roll without touching them. Hardly any tech issues. However the future is fraught with extreme danger due to proprietary companies - particularly M$ - lobbying for laws assigning themselves rights which usurp rights of the commons or fences off large areas of technology simply because somebody else got to filing patents first. Even worse fencing of technology which could be used for illegal acts in spite of the fact that such users are a microscopic subset of legit users, and the affected parties are big companies on a death spiral. They are equating knowledge with limited + non replicable resource - property. In reality the value of knowledge lies in it's non expendability and replicability. The original patent laws were created to benefit individuals by providing them a time limited period of monopoly, so that society and the creator could benefit from the IMPLEMENTATION of knowledge AND that knowledge become public. Patent law required that the patent be described in detail and with specificity. Over a period of time the whole system was turned on it's head so that companies became it's primary beneficiary and the patent paper itself was anything but detailed and specific. This bad situation was further twisted to patent business processes, software and algorithms (knowledge) thus trying to interfere with ones thought process. You can't think an alternate algo producing the same result. If you think this is idiotic be assured it IS NOT there are case against two doctors for discussing Hormone Replacement Therapy, which is patented by some company (HRT that is ). The excuse made by companies is that it costs a lot of money to create knowledge - which is directly contradicted by the evidence in the case of software. In the case of other knowledge like pharmaceuticals it could be shown that the major cost of identifying promising directions of research are borne by public bodies like universities. It's only the commercialization which is expensive, again much of that expense is marketing, distribution and legal costs - nothing to do with knowledge creation. The evidence is low cost drug mfgs in baruch / ankleshwar area often as low as 1/20th the cost of a branded equiv. The fight by the commons relies in the main on taking the moral high ground. Compromise this by condoning or justifying illegal behaviour and you will be delivering yourself a k.o. . In essence it's a slow slide to the Feudal age where a tyrant king and his overlords simply annexed large parts of the commons and made it private property and you paid a tithe to farm, or became a serf. Their power derived from wealth largely obtained by plundering peaceful wealthy communities. Sounds familiar?. rgds jtd

X server trouble

HI all, There was some problem with my xserver, it did not start after i installed java sdk 1.5. i think it was because of the space or something. anyway i removed that but now the problem is i have to login every time in text mode and i have too issue startx manually, using the command startx. How do i make it automatically do that and one more thing only gnome starts up. if i give startx kde it tries to start the x server but fails, any clues what could be the problem and how can i resolve it... How about if you identify the master and slave database servers as users (presuming you will run the slaves and master on different machines), give only these users write access on both master and slaves, and read-only to everyone else - assuming you need to update the salve databases as well, otherwise just give the slaves write access to the master? -- Vickram

No idea about the config since its been quite soemtime me dirtied hands on with ldap. Did you check out the ACL's for slapd-slurpd?. Check the archives online pls. Eminent economist and former Venezuela minister for planning and development Dr Filipe Perez-Marti agreed, and stressed that participation, solidarity and wisdom would be the key three words that characterise a new global situation. Amidst praise for Kerala for organising this first ever south-to-south contact in the world of free software and free knowledge, speakers from Latin America (Venezuela, and Brazil), Italy and India explored ways of understanding their respective situations and possibilities for collaboration across the oceans. The Latin Americans were keen to hear about Kerala's attempts to look at take Free Software solutions to schools, through their IT@School project which aims to train about 200 master trainers, who will then train at least one teacher from each school in the state in the use of free software. Free Software Foundation of India director Prof G Nagarjuna stressed how India was able to fight-back attempts to make software a patentable item. He said help for this endeavour had come from enlightened politicians, the peoples' science movement, media and others. Latin American delegates spoke of how their firms including the Venezualan oil giant had opted for free software, both for more control over their work and avoid possibilities of sabotage in a crucial sector of the economy. Government of Brazil special advisor in the ministry of communications Antonio Bezerra de Albquerque Neto said Brazil was keen to build links with countries like India and China, and stressed that Free Software is a key means of in building a fairer society. SPACE executive secretary Satish Babu called this a fairly unique event and said Kerala had a good chance of building itself as a global destination of Free Software. SPACE chairperson Prof K R Srivathsan termed Free Software a natural way for the scientific community to play around with. Former musician turned Free Software activist Juan Carlos Gentile said he hoped this first-ever meet of its kind would lead to many things to come. Kerala IT secretary PH Kurian said ideas of sharing knowledge were not alien to India, and cited the case of Gautam Buddha who used the people's language to spread his message. SquidGuard vs DansGuardian

In my experience, SquidGuard runs very stable in my environment (around 2 years) and "integrated" to Squid, but it seems no more development. We having a distro shootout or what?. Anyways, the most imp like Dr. Shahrukh also mentioned is to be aware of the boot loader config. Keep one main gnu-linux partition as bootable, do not re-write the mbr for any other distro you install. Copy the kernels from all your new installs to the main gnu-linux boot partitions and just keep appending the entries into the /boot/grub.conf file. This way you can manange any amount of operating Systems on one machine. The tricky situation one can get in is with the *BSDs. With careful configuration you can get through on this one too. You could again choose the Gnu-Linux grub boot loader to boot into the system For Sun Solaris 10 x86 i would suggest you get an additional HDD and save you some paracetamols. MS has enough of documentation and hence you should find configuring that a breeze. Who ever said FSF/OS fanatics aren't open minded. Boooooooooooooooooooooting your way around..:D. FC3 Login Problem: Root logs in fine. 1 user account has trouble

This problem happened since this morning. Have 2 user accounts (in addition to 1 root) on an FC3 system. Root and 1 user account logs in fine. Another user account displays strange logging behavior. On typing username and password, it does not say authentication failed, but attempts a login and the screen changes with the hour glass appearing for a second or so. Then instead of showing the loading icons, it returns to the authentication page. Have changed password for that account just to be sure but it still persists. And only for this particular account. OpenOffice 1.9.104 (moving towards 2.0 ): early review and a query

Just moved to OO 1.9.104 (2.0 Beta) and must say its a great improvement over 1.4. They finally got the print preview in default and with an intuitive (read: windows type) icon. Works fine on the win boxes. Facing a problem on FC3. even though I ran the GUI integration rpm, and it added the same to the menu, the programs don't seem to come up. I am working on it, but if anyone has faced a similar situation and knows the fix, please pass it on. thanks. abhi Ps: the installation history. May 2004: Installed the current version of OpenOffice and asked staff to transition from the existing MSOffice 97/2000/xp. Nov 2004: Nothing happened. MSOffice used as usual. Mar 2005: upgraded OO to 1.4 but still no transition to it from msoffice. May 2005: Uninstalled all versions of MSOffice, and changed the file extension to .sxw and .sxc via a script. There was whining for exactly 2 days about how difficult the new thing is and how it doesnt do so n so functions (primary complaint being, no print preview button). Multiple distros

Hi I have 2 computers. A brand new PC P4 2.4ghz with 256mb RAM 40g HDD CD/DVD combo drive Old IBM branded PC with Celeron 500.(Non Cd boot) CD rom drive 64mb RAM. Unfortunately the new Pc will boot Win Xp as the primary OS as other family members use it. 20Gb has been partitioned for this as C and D I have already tried FC3/Slack and Ubuntu on the remaining space. Now I would like to re install thes distros the following way 1.FC3 2.Debian Sarge 3.Slackware 4.Ubuntu Hoary Each will be allocated 4gb space Will also alocate 512mb as swap space The remaining space will remain empty or may be used in future for LFS or Gentoo. Is the above scheme possible ? by creating extended partitions Will 4 gb suffice for each distro. I intend to install the full distros and then remove unwanted packages. Thanks and Regards Ninad

Micronet ADSL Modem setup

Hi! I use FC3 at home and I have taken a Touchtel/Airtel DSL Connection. The trouble is that I want to use my Micronet USB ADSL Broadlink SP3302 Modem in Linux. This modem comes with drivers only for Windows. I checked the manufacturer's website. Though they want their products to work with Linux, they donot support Linux(??). I have also checked the eciadsl Linux driver page. No mention of Micronet's products over there either. This modem connects directly to the USB port and does not go through an Ethernet card. Can you help me use this modem in Linux? What do I need to do? Thanx John

Windows vs Linux - Programming Model only

Why is it that we keep bringing up the same old topic of windows vs linux from a user's point of view?? I've programmed for/on windows before (dont flame me for this) and would really like to know how linux compares to M$ on the development front. It would be really usefull if someone could throw some light on - dll, COM, windows api equivalents on GNU/Linux. I doubt there exist a common api (for GUI) since there r different options available for different window managers. But then again x server is common. I really have limited knowledge on this front so i may be totally of the mark here. Also i'm aware about python and java which allow the program to be platform independent, but i'm looking at equivalent to M$ technologies here. Since Linux was not designed ground up as a replacement to windows but infact unix (did i get my facts right?) so there is bound to be some difference in the structure or api or whatever its called (i think its called the programming model...??), thats the difference i'm looking to understand. Anand. PS: "users" never learn untill they lose their precious data, so till then let em keep using M$.

No. Mono is one such FLOSS project trying to implement the dotnet framework. But even they are cluless about any M$ patents that they might be violating. The general feeling is that Miguel & co. are more likely than not to be in violation. Hi, I have an AMD64 with Fedora core 2. It works just fine. I tried a Gentoo install, but I kept having problems with my RAID card. Fedora was painless. Hope this helps. Linux in India lacks general awareness. * The PDF Viewer crashed twice right there in the session. So it's not as if Linux apps don't crash. * My windowsXP boots faster than SUSE 9.1. This could be another area for Linux to improve on for laptop users. * Maybe I'm too stupid to use Linux (or MS turned my brain to mush), but I'd prefer a single installation file that works out of the box rather than zips that go "Segmentation fault" when I try to run the app. It does not matter whether I have Linux source, I wouldn't know how to fix it. This is one area where I feel Windows scores in rakin in the people. * There seems to be too much infighting with distros on this side (drivers released for x version for Distro A.. other distro users make yer own. It's open source. OR Buy Linux compatible hardware.) * Virus-wise I still feel it's because no one's interested as of now + a better base-system than MS. As long as stuff is made by humans, there will always be others who can break in. * Linux scores in the 'under the hood' department but is still yet to reach 'prime time' status. Yesterday's GLUG meet

Yesterday's GLUG meet on Eclipse attracted around 40 participants in Mumbai + 5 people from the Nagpur remote center of IIT Bombay's Distance Education Center. Zaheer Tavadi of IBM gave an overview of IBM's interest in open source and Ankur Goel of IBM gave an introduction to Eclipse. This was followed by a pleasant surprise. We had Tom Hanrahan, Engineering Director and Sean Madian, HR and Economic Development Director of Open Source Development Labs, home to Linus Torvalds. Tom and Sean are in India to get inputs and feedback on what role OSDL can play in India. Both the sessions were highly interactive with a great deal of audience interaction. I will be travelling next month so I request one of the GLUG list members to take up the btask of coordinating next month's GLUG meet. Venky

Citoh 132 col purchased 2nd hand in 1990 was last working in 2000. Havent tried it since. I think mfg date was 1987. No service other than oiling the head shaft. And epson fx1170 1994. Very heavy use. Self service for cleaning stationery punchouts and oiling the head shaft. I also have an Epson laptop (no jokes) - z80 with 64k ram and 320 x 128 lcd and 32k plugin rom. It has serial, parallel, micro printer and cpm + basic in rom. 1985 vintage purchased in akhiabara for $400. Will check if it still works today. rgds jtd

And a few months later 2400bps dialup Tarapur mumbai - with 10 disconnects for a single transfer - still beat the office boy with floppies. Oh the joy of the gearheads, accounts and purchase depts. Sob. The good old days. Funny that todays machines do pretty much the same thing a lot slower. However the point missed here is this - u are a prime target for a law suit. 1) If a vendor of any thing were to deliver equipment which, if used in it's default state, would cause grevious harm he would be sued to bankrupty. The defence of ignorance is no defence cause vendor should not have been selling the stuff in the first place if he is incompetent. 2) M$ would have absolved themselves of most things and have the money power to outlast most individuals. But you as a vendor are a sitting duck. 3) All other arguments about usability, compatability, default configs, etc. are irrelevant. It's like selling a car with no brakes. One can supply a set of brakes and instructions for installation but that would not protect you from a lawsuit unless u very clearly stated the fact that fitting brakes onto the vehicle is a very complex task, beyond the capabilities of most car users, and that post fitting of brakes is still likely to fail. Apprise your customer of these facts and see how many still opt for winwoes. It's only a matter of time before some vendor is going to get shafted. rgds jtd

The current spat on software patents is a case in point. As of now patents protect a product, not a generalised description of a method of achieving a task, which is what software actually is. One can write code in an infinite number of ways for doing a given task. Patenting software is one of the many causes dear to a prop company's heart and totally anthema to free software. Software in any case is more than adequately protected by copyrights. DRM is another. DMCA yet one more. All of these want to take away consumer and in many cases producer rights. While a closed software business may exist it would be impossible for it to survive for any length of time. From a business perspective the transition on this front as you have mentioned has been very slow albeit steady. Its growth is indeed highly important for the entire ecosystem (closed-open) to flourish and for the customer to have a choice in what he wants to buy. In short gone are those days when vendors could shove unsupported closed source applns/operating systems and charge abnominable fees for continuing support. [snip] My point is there is no "Single Open Source/Free Software Solution" that will serve all needs and the same is true for Close Source propreitary end-to-end stacks from MNC's across the world. In this day and age as the ilug-bom we should seek to work towards a harmonius ecosystem consisting of both Free Software/Open Source and Closed Source components. Probably one that fosters growth of such small classroom businesses based on sound business models. Be in terms of Venture Capital or possible helping intellectually support/stimulate peer groups that wll inturn mushroom into healthy business models. Each one is important for the others survival. No man lives as an island you see.The story of David v/s Goliath is indeed a fitting tribute to the FSF/OS movement and i pray it gives us the strength to continually mushroom into a great self sustaing movement. (OT)Linux Bazar shuts down

Hi I thought I had found a wonderful site in *www.linuxbazar.com<http://www.linuxbazar.com> * based in Banaglore from where I could order Linux Cd's of the latest distros and that too within week. *Today i was shocked when I visited there site to find that it has been shut down.* Infact I ordered Debian Sarge and Slack 10.1 and many more Cd's from them in the 1st week of May 05 and I got them real fast. I dont know when they started there site but got the url from this mailing list. They site the shutting down is due to lack of time on there side and also that due to the advent of broadband downloading is fast and so distro downloads will be fast. Is it really the truth in India thru a broadband connection?. I do not have one but am planning to have one. This is the 2nd instance when a site which distributes linux distros at nominal prices has shut down basically due to time constraints. Anyways great job done. VPN thru iptables firewall

Hi all, We have windows machine network at my both office locations. When I try to connect thru iptables firewall (Gateway settings on Win XP machine) to my remote network it gives error " Network path not found", but when i connect it thru router ip address (Gateway settings on Win XP machine) it works-I am able to access all machines and shared resources on remote network. Hi, We are trying to Migrate Open VMS 7.1 to Linux. Following are installed on VMS Server -- Operating System --Open VMS AXP Programming Lang -- ANSI C DECMessageQ for Internal and external communication Oracle 7.3.2 RDBMS relatioal database DECNet Communication Software OSI layer based comunication software for SINEC- H1 BUS Oracle SQL*Net RDBMS network interface software. We Installed Linux and installed Oracle 10g on it. we had taken export from 7.3.2 database and impoted to New database. We can able to communicate with Client forms v4.5 but we are not able to do the DECMEssageQ. Applications are written in PROC to get data from PLC through telegrams to DECMessageQ mailbox and from there to Oracle Database. Any body has faced this kind of situation? And by the way Dell is manufactured in China. In fact you will find it nearly impossible to get a piece of electronic equipment from any place other than China. Which means that they produce quality goods too. Most OEM factories produce stuff and sort them into a, b and c categories, a for the big brands (IBM, Sony, Matsuchita), b for their own brands (sold mostly in US, eur and gulf) and c for the importers from India and other third world countries. There is also a d category - junk - for consumables (batteries, pencils, inks, etc). We have a lot to learn about "cheap", which is mostly about efficiency and a little about cutting the right corners. You will find cheap laptop clones of IBM, Dell, Compaq etc. The price difference is a good 40 ~ 50% on the base models. If you buy the upgrades (harddisk, Wlan etc) from lamington road the difference grows by another 15%. Not to mention the fact that you are no more dependent on Dell / IBM. You are ofcourse taking a chance on the warranty. I am no fan of the Chinese - I continually pressured to readjust my bussiness to maintain margins and keep my customers happy. Hi I finally installed Debian Sarge(DVD) build date 26/4/05. After the initial configs and reading the CD I was presented with GDM login screen to my surprise the screen appeared very grainy just like what appears when one logins in safe mode in windoze. Why is this happening? Is any package missing to be installed Thanks Ninad

"The “testing” distribution contains packages that haven't been accepted into a “stable” release yet, but they are in the queue for that. Dear All We have qmail server configured it is working properly But the problem has arised when the "ISP smtp" we had using for all outbound mails from our qmail server to internet requires "SMTP AUTH" Need to know how we can configure the qmail server to use amtp auth. So that it can deliver the mails to the smtp relay of ISP. I have tested the ISP smtp relay direct in my email client works properly need to do the same for my qmail server. The next year we organised a bunch of money-collecting actions and tried desperately to get the attention of the press... The PC's started dripping in... In the end we collected enough money for the transport, but not for our tickets, nor for our stay here. So we decided to finance our tickets and our stay here ourselves. Just in time we recieved a huge donation of screens and PC's and from that moment on good luck shone upon us, we got a couple of very large donations that turned out to be very nessescary here in India since the customs charged us a huge amount of import-taxes on our OWN PC's. We arrived in India and were very nicely welcomed by the school who had provided a very nice appartement for us and a huge classroom. At the moment we have about 30 PC's working in the classroom and the classes are going very fine. We have thought our students the history of PC's, basic PC knowledge about hardware and everything. Further we thought them the basic use of the CLI in Gentoo Linux, now we are teaching them xHTML and we will leave behind a course-book about openOffice.org . We know this is a little short-notice but we would like to invite 2 representatives of your organisation to come and pay a visit to our classroom. We are looking for some people that are apt at using Gentoo-linux, or just linux in general who would like to give up a little of their spare time to keep the network up and running after we have gone... Resizing partitions

I am trying to reduce the size of a partition. In the various guides i read they have told to first resize the filesystem then delete and recreate the partition with fdisk. But how do I get the resized fs size in sectors and won't deleting the partition and recreating it delete the filesystem on it and the data with it.(I have a backup) Nikhil

Hi, Don't know if this is old news... Just snagged a book off the shelves.. Linux Bible 2005 - Chris. Negus. (I got it for rs.440) I'm just about to finish the 2nd chapter. so far so good ... not ready to comment on the book yet. But the killer thing is that the book comes with a DVD + CD ( the list as far I could see) DVD - Knoppix (bootable), RedHat FC 2, Slackware, SUSE LiveCD CD - Damn Small Linux (bootable - a knoppix variant), Debian Sarge Knoppix rocks! Yesterday was the historic day that I heard an mp3 play from linux + the sweet thing was that I was running linux off a Disc. No partitioning, no installation woes. "It simply worked !!!" Deepak Phatak of the Indian Institute of Technology has kicked off an effort to create the Knowledge Public License, or KPL, a licensing program that will let programmers share ideas with one another while at the same time allowing them to retain the rights to their own software modifications. The license will likely function much like the Berkeley Software Distribution or the MIT License programs, he added. The idea is to create an environment where developers can take advantage of the collaborative power of the open-source movement while giving individuals the ability to exploit their own twists. Ideally, such a program could also help ease the raging tensions between the open-source software movement and proprietary software companies. "The free software people are afflicted by what I call the J factor, which is the jealousy factor. The proprietary people are afflicted by the G factor, the greed factor. They want to maximally extract money from the world," Phatak said in an interview here. "I am working to tell the world, 'Please permit these groups to coexist peacefully and harmoniously. There is a tremendous advantage to everyone.'" "Legally, we have to move very carefully because the Americans have a tendency to sue anybody for anything," he added. The number of open-source licensing programs has expanded rapidly in the past few years. Under some programs, such as the General Public License, developers have to publish their modifications if the modifications are used outside their own operations. Many in the open-source community have complained about the proliferation of licensing models and taken action to curtail the numbers. Budding software powerhouse If anything, Phatak's licensing proposal comes with the power of numbers. India's 1,750 colleges with computer science and electrical engineering degrees admit about 250,000 students a year, he said. That's up from 1983, when there were 70 colleges admitting 5,000 students a year. Combined with the boom in outsourcing, this makes India one of the major centers for software development. A contest sponsored by Red Hat seeking new concepts for open-source software drew more than 2,000 proposals, Phatak said. Winners will be announced in a few weeks. Phatak has also created the Ekalavya program to stimulate open-source ideas. Under the program (named after a Hindu legend), students submit ideas to a collaborative portal. Those with promising ideas are then linked up with mentors in the industry. "Let me tell you my dream: Today, India is a net taker in the open-source community. In four years, I want the world to recognize India as a net giver, and that is entirely possible" he said. While collaboration between universities and private enterprise is not as pervasive in India as it is in the U.S., it's growing, according to many sources. For instance, start-ups created to exploit technology that was developed at universities have begun to pop up, according to Rishi Navani, managing director at WestBridge Capital Partners, a venture firm specializing in Indo-U.S. investments. One example is Strand Genomics, which specializes in analytical software for drug discovery and development. Professors at major institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology or the Indian Institute of Science also sit on technology advisory boards with corporations and government agencies, which are often run by their former students. ("The IIT is a big club," said one graduate.) Recently, a large insurance company adopted thin clients rather than PCs in part because an IIT study showed that it could cut ownership costs by about two-thirds, Phatak said. A recent visitor to Phatak's office was Microsoft Chief Technical Officer Craig Mundie. "I told him a competitive price point (for a desktop OS) would be in the single digit dollars," Phatak said. Word wrapping in Emacs

I wanted to know how to set up word-wrapping in Emacs. I went to the top level customization group -> Editing -> Fill and set a few options, but there seems to be no difference. Also, will the word wrapping work if I go back and press a few backspaces? Is there a way to justify-align my text documents? GLUG meet 22nd May 2005 on Eclipse

The topic for this GLUG meet will be Eclipse, an integrated development environment that was open-sourced by IBM. Mohan Jayakar of IBM will be giving us an introduction to Eclipse. acers latop AD: can we do something ?

Acers Laptop Ad in Times of India (today: 9th May '05), page 15.the "fine print" *** "the Linux that is loaded is a free version and would have limited functionality until another operating system is installed" *** this is really stupid!... can anything be done to educate the acer guys? this doesn't make any sense. It is extremely misleading. What "Missing / defunct " functionality are they talking about? I think it will take us very little time to get *fully* functional *free* *Linux* working on that laptop that they can give out. anyone has any contact with acer? Free software doest work like proprietary stuff which revels in *limited" functionality. Ads like these are _extremely misleading, damaging and do more to confuse people about GNU / FSF than anything else. more M$ fud ? c'ya Erle

Apart from the moral and legal issues it is a pain to maintain upgrades to your code given the everchanging hardware and software environment. In any case imo you are better off with Debian if you are not using RH's / Suse's services. Using their services allows you to concentrate on your bussiness instead of worrying about a million different things. GNU/Linux is definetly a very happening place I assure you. Particularly in organizations with poor IT setups. And there are many such with 300 up pcs and a handful of servers. Why should RH be bothered with 40 machines, when the same effort can rake in the cash for 400. Which is why Linux on the home user desktop has not caught on as much as it should - it does not make commercial sense. rgds jtd

Read my first line - contract or no contract - u dont care. You cannot have a contract that violates some other part of the law. In this case the rights assigned to a recipient is contingent on the fact that the same right is automatically assigned to the next recipient, without exception of any kind. So if distributor signs a contract to the contrary with anyone they have automatically abrogated their right to distribute and are in fact in violation of the copyrights of numerous contributors to the distro. The contract they have made you sign is illegal and they have willfully committed an illegal act. and have no right to distribute. And as a result you are not bound by the contract and are free to distribute and that you too could file a suit of fraud against distributor for misleading you into an illegal contract. However you cannot file a copyright violation suit against distributor, unless you are a code contributor (Afaik Philip Tellis could do so as also Karunakar of Indic fame). Note that contracts permit two parties to sign away their own rights, not the rights of others, which is what this contract does. This is irrespective of the fact that distributor is offering a service of compiling, debugging, packaging etc. These services are what they can charge for. Infact they can charge the recipient without providing any of these services. Eg you cannot have a contract with me to sell Devdas' house, because u dont own it.But suppose Devdas leases his house to you with a clause permitting subleasing, subject to the condition that the subleasee can further sublease in whole or part and that no leasee can remove this clause in their downstream sublease contract. Then you can sublease to me some or all part of the apartment and i can do the same and so on. Note that we cannot introduce a clause preventing subleasing as per the original contract. So If i sign a contract with someone else preventing sub leasing, i immediately loose the right to sublease. However I can continue to use my portion of the apartment. I am absolutely sure of the above. However IANAL. So take a legal opinion from two lawyers together a copyright expert and a contract expert if you plan on tangling legally with RH or Suse or whoever. If you are planning a bussiness by placing restrictions on the recipient, perish the thought. Final word.
