What you can do to help the Konkani Wikipedia: * Translate articles of relevance to Goa, and to generally building the body of knowledge in Konkani. There are tonnes of copyright-free articles which you can translate into Konkani at http://en.wikipedia.org This is specially suited for people with linguistic and translation skills (whatever script). * Play around with the Wikipedia and see how it works. It's not complex. The starting point is to create a login for yourself. Then, everything follows. This is specially suited for tech people. But don't believe it's a complicated tech job! * Build awareness about the attempt to build the Konkani Wikipedia, and tell others about it. It will only work if there is enough "critical mass" and interest around it. * Above all, promote the language of your choice (any script!) using this tool of the 21st century. It's a powerful tool, so let's make use of it. There is PLENTY a list like this can do, being vibrant and full of aware people as well as people who lurk to learn. You can work with the cybercafe initiative (which is a brilliant and practical idea, and having watched it emerge from the discussions over the past couple of weeks, I really applaud the consensual method) to create a working distro that addresses the needs of tomorrow's computer users, unlike the bloatware that is increasingly irrelevant and inherently expensive to use, and that never succeeds in emerging productively from the morass of contraditictions that is the DRM world. You can work with each other (all of us) to create better installers, that deliver not just simpler install routines but also address the mix of h/w and peripherals in the real world. You can help put together a visual platform (qua Aqua) that will deliver designs that match anything that comes from the Mac world (the only competition, as far as this aspect is concerned, IMHO Vista is so far behind, you wonder - well, I wonder - whether they even know what visual delight means). And then there's work pending on a FOSS mobile interface to deliver the announced features of the iPhone for an Indian audience (localised, the works) - that will run on any Linux-enabled mobile box. In the legal playing field, the FOSS movement in India doesn't have the kind of groundswell 'critical mass' to pursue court battles against restrictive practices such as the unsigned pamphlet the Bombay Police put out for cybercafes. We need to identify the root causes of this apathy (ie, it is awareness? is it funding?) and address them in a structured manner. As we all know, there are many more restrictive practices in place that make it difficult for ordinary users to switch comfortably. We need to find a way of placing people in key organisations in the civil society movement (many of these organisations pay quite well, actually, and prefer persons who have an all-round approach to work, rather than tightly focused on, say, being a sysad 24/7). Such people will play a key role in bring such organisations directly into the FOSS movement. We also need to make visible persons who work in medium and large commercial organsations to come and talk - at LUG meets, for instance - on the use of FOSS in their operations. Just some food for thought. If some or all of these things begin to happen, you can be sure that the developers in the 'doze world will think twice about letting restrictive software out into the real world. I just saw Nagarjuna's post about being at HBSCE all of today, and must say, talk about communication gap, I didn't notice ANY post from anyone saying the venue would be available all day. Unless there is a firewall which is allowing outgoing DNS queries on port 53. Best way is to configure a caching DNS server on the proxy itself. And use that as the DNS server LAN wide. It would also speed up things a bit. Could someone tell me how to configure proxy setting in bash. I found some links that mention the http_proxy variable to be set, but over there the proxy is of the format http://proxy.abc.com:80 now the proxy i'm using dosn't have the http:// in the begining :( Anand

Mumbai cyber cafe license requirement makes Microsoft OS mandatory

Have just learnt that under the recently announced licensing scheme for the cyber cafes in Mumbai, the Mumbai police under its list of requirement vide point no 14 insists on a copy of Microsoft Open License. This license fee is apparently prohibitive and apparently still unclear on the licensing term for public use, and, restrains cyber cafe operators from choosing any other alternative operating systems. I would like to hear from others who have more details. Secondly a cyber cafe is a place people primarily for browsing the Web using a Web browser. I am not sure how many cyber cafe's have the necessary bandwidth to allow _all_ their users to _simultaneously_ engage in voice chat or video chat. Therefore a viable alternative is to earmark a few machines which are only going to be used only for browsing (and some text based IM) to be converted into GNU/Linux or *BSD or any other free operating system. Moreover it would be nice to have the cyber cafe association issue a press release expressing their preference towards free software wherever feasible. Localization Usability Workshop for Gujarati

Hi, Novell is working on a localization project for the GNOME desktop environment. We have done localization in 5 Indian Languages Bengali Hindi Gujarati Marathi Tamil We are planning Localization Usability workshop for Gujarati whereby we are inviting people to test the Gujarati localization and provide their feedback. We will compile this feedback and use it for improving the Gujarati localization status. The schedule and venue are mentioned below: Language: Gujarati Venue: Mumbai (Novell Office) Date: March 31, 2007 We are looking for 10 volunteers for this Usability Workshop. Volunteers should either be regulars user of desktop with a Gujarati interface or should be able to read, write and speak Gujarati well. I do not have a cyber cafe anywhere with 4km of where I have been living for the past 4 years. The only place that is mainly used for Internet and Web browsing is my institute's computer centre, where every machine runs Ubuntu. The centre has always been haunted by first year guys who do not have a computer of their own, and there has been no decrease in this trend. Not a single soul had to be trained to use Firefox on Ubuntu. Want some proof? Got my Triband working today :-)) . Did a little googling for rebooting the modem. Hello List, In the last week, I went through a few pages on gnu.org and found the link to GNU/Linux User Group, Bombay as http://www.ilug-bom.org.in which, as informed has expired, and also does not offer redirection. I sent an email to the webmaster change it to glug-bom.org and the same has been reflected now. I have a small suggestion for the home page, not sure whether it is really a great idea, but seems to be reasonably good to me. An image from the Picture Gallery could be in place of the meet's summary that would randomly change each time a user visits the website / refreshes the home page. Every month's meet summary could be put up at the same location for a few days (may be <=3 days). Reducing IT costs in Govt. Offices.

Hello All, The points raised by Kenneth got me thinking about this issue and came up with an idea for long term cost reduction in IT. Right now every Govt. office where the IT is implemented, has to be visited by experts who are aware of software installation as well as setup, in order to install as well as upgrade software. The offices also need sys-admins to manage admin level tasks. For an entire State, it can be a daunting task if new software packages are to be implemented over all its computers. So here is a concept that is a mix of advantages of all the current systems like Computer farms, Thin client, Network install and Raid5. There is a central server which is a very powerful machine. It is connected to various other smaller servers in different locations, via broadband or a private network and they in turn connect to other machines directly or again through sub-servers. The entire network is mapped properly. The central server is the only machine thats manually loaded with the full softwares. The other machines install themselves automatically in a cascading manner from top to bottom. The entire process is already mapped and programmed into the central server. As each of the sub-servers come up, they install the machines under them and so on. Since all the machines have their own HDDs, they run independent of their parent servers in case the servers break down. If any machine's HDD crashes, then it is simply replaced and it automatically updates itself over the network. The manpower used to maintain the systems need not be software savvy, only hardware guys. Every day when the user switches on the pc, it checks for updates/upgrades automatically through the network and is up to date without any manual effort. So only a small team of experts is actually sitting in the central server room installing software packages or upgrading them, whereas all the other systems get updated automatically down the line. A test lab is setup permanently in the central server premises where there is a small server-client network that works as a test system before the software is implemented on the central server. A hardware compatibility list can be sent to all departments so they purchase/replace hardware based on that list only. Once the setup is complete, it will be available to all vendors so in future they can create packages based on this structure only. The sys-admins too are few and centrally located in a call center and they do the necessary admin tasks on the systems. KDE Google Summer of Code

Hi folks, I am sure Google Summer of Code is nothing new to most of you people. So we have GSoC '07 even. And like previous years, even this year The KDE Project will be an mentor organisation. Some of you might have seen the dot[1] news. So I would really urge the students on the list who are familiar with C++ and Qt/KDE development to take part in SoC. So send in your proposals. Its a great way to learn new stuff and become a part of a FOSS project. Here are a few pointers [2] and [3]. Please note that [3] is a list of ideas that various mentors have put in. They are not the only ideas. You can come up with your own - say for your favourite KDE application - and recommend the same to the maintainer/author of that application. See what he/she says and work on the idea and put forth an proposal to google. If the mentors like your proposal and it gets selected nothing better than that. Go ahead and do some cool stuff. Now here's some simple points that I have realised from my last year's experience : While putting forth an proposal, don't be lazy and just cut/copy/paste what the mentor has already posted on [3]. Be original and explain what exactly you would like to do, how etc. Now if there are students on this list who think that they are not good in C++/Qt yet, especially the ones in 1st and 2nd year, fret not. You have an year or two to learn the same and work on it. And most importantly getting involved in FOSS - in this case Qt/KDE development doesnot need a SoC even. Just fix a bug or whatever - I am sure you know the drill or have heard it countless times. There is loads of source lying around, pick it up and get going. And trust me, your chances increase manifold if you already are an contributor. Because the mentors know that you can do stuff. Although that means nothing, last year I saw many students who were new and did an awesome job and some of them kept going on and are now actually contributing to various KDE projects. suggestions/improvements on script maintaining persistent net connection

Hello. I've put together a few commands in a Perl script that does two things: 1. Tries to maintain a steady net connection (using PPPoE) 2. Resumes a download if it was interrupted because of a break in the net connection. I am attaching the script here; any suggestions to make it more robust and generalized would be helpful. Hi ppl, We are developing an open source project for fun as well as a for learning. To give you a brief idea of our project - its a client server application installer on XML as the repository and python is used for parsing and searching for elements. You may find the details here : http://code.google.com/p/ulair Now, though I went through the working and parsing of XML in various Python ref material, but I just had a few queries like : 1) How does one get the exact value of an element down a tree like say : <abc><xyz><pqr>100</pqr></xyz></abc> So in the above case say the value 100, though it could be a string as well. We require the exact value, not its representation in XML or ASCII value as explained by you in some books. 2) Is there any efficient way of searching for elements in a huge XML tree in python ? 3) Is there any way in which one can change the tag names or incorporate new elements ? 4) We are thinking about using QT for creating our frontend, how does python integrate with it ? If you could suggest any other GUI Designer for python then it would be great. I know some of these questions are ignorant. However it would be a great help if you could give us some insight by answering them or pointing us to some other refrences. Slackware with ubuntu

Hi all, Has anyone tried out Slackware with ubuntu on the same machine? I read that Slack uses lilo while I use grub with ubuntu now. Can a Slack installation coexist with this setup? googling suggests that skipping the lilo installation and then fixing up with grub will do it. I think I would have to use knoppix see what exact files it has put in /boot to figure out the right entries for kernel and initrd (if any). Is this right? lost trash folder in kde

hello, i, by mistake, deleted the trash folder in kde, residing in ~/Desktop/Trash. Although i have recreated the "folder", it does *not* act like the trash folder is supposed to -- deleted stuff doesn't end up there. i tried searching for "trash path" in the "control center", but in vain. googling around provided the path variable to reside in "control center -> system administration -> paths", but unfortunately in my case i can't find the "trash path" variable :( -- warm regards, Pradnyesh Sawant -- Man thrives, oddly enough, only in the presence of a challenging environment. --Anon

Wireless Linux Download --> Installation Stage

Hello all, This is with reference to the wireless linux download idea that I had posted a month ago. Just to refresh your memories, it consists of a stand alone repo server that is linked to a WAP. So anyone and everyone who want to download CD/DVD ISOs can visit the location with their wireless enabled laptops and locally download the required isos. We can also keep some LAN cables for older lappys. Recently I bought a secondhand pc, an HP, AMD K6 450 MHz. with 128 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, CD ROM. It also came with a colour printer that was serviced today. It only needs new cartriges now. I am keeping the printer for personal use and it will be used to print the linux brochures. A few at a time as per the need. The pc box will be used for the WLD idea and I want to install it in any institution which is willing to run it for 24 hours. The HDD was cleaned and installed with the Debian Etch base package CD that I had downloaded last month. So now Debian is up in command line. Net is up too. Apt is giving some trouble as I did not use the mirrors during installation. I tried various entires in the sources.list but it hangs midway and then throws errors. It should be resolved with the blessings of the experts. There are 4 primary partitions created in the box as follows:- 100 MB /boot 3 GB / 36 GB /var (for the web pages) 2 GB swap Now the actual installation and setup stage begins and I would like to know if anyone is interested in setting up the system. I feel that a one or two day session in any place would be ideal where we meet as a group and finish it up. We document the procedure to help others do the same. Right now I don't have the budget to buy a wireless AP but I/we can pool in later or use a secondhand one. Right now we can test the same with a LAN cable and a laptop. I will bring the box with kb and mouse to the venue. NTFS Screwup in Etch.

Hello All, I wanted to try out this month's Chip DVD which showed a blank disk in Etch. It has Kubuntu 6.10. So I rebooted to try out the same dvd in windows. However I missed the boot-loader and it booted back into Debian. While it was in progress, I gave the 3 finder salute and the pc rebooted decently and this time I selected xp. However it would not load beyond the account login part. I attached a spare hdd and booted into debian and backed up my entire disk for safety. Then using the xp recovery console I gave the command 'chkdsk c: /p' and now I am able to boot into the admin account only and that too slowly. Many features have got disabled. In short, I got to reload windows for the first time ever since I got the system 5 years ago with all its umpteen updates having to be reloaded again. :P My fstab has ntfs as the file system for the win partition. Now I have added a hash to that line to prevent the partition from being mounted in Linux. This is a caution to all those using Debian Etch with an NTFS partition in the pc. Please don't keep the ntfs partition permanently mounted via /etc/fstab. From other problems too, Debian Etch is far from 'Testing' or almost stable. UFB-15 Protocol ( Proposed by Rony )

Hello All, This is a new protocol proposed for the purpose of facilitating fast Linux CD/DVD ISO downloads through the DTH type satellite medium. A Linux satellite having a footprint over Asia and Africa will help in providing the latest Linux distributions to even the remotest areas of these regions. The broadcasts will be sequential and timed for every .iso file, just like regular television programmes with their respective timings. The number of transponders, frequency etc. is not discussed here. The main purpose of this writeup is to create a transmission protocol for error free unidirectional file downloads via satellite. A single broadcast should be received by un-limited number of receivers anywhere in Asia and Africa. As satellite transmission is prone to disturbances, any error in the ISO file being downloaded will render the entire process useless. Since it is going to be a unidirectional broadcast that cannot receive feedback from the receiving units, certain correction features need to be added to the broadcast. The proposed protocol will be called Unidirectional File Broadcast ( UFB-15 ) Protocol. The number 15 denotes the 15 second delay feature added for correction. This can vary from 1 second to 60 seconds or more as per the users' choice. The UFBP-15 will broadcast data packets in groups of 1 second each. These packets will contain their parity check sequence interlaced to check downloaded packet integrity. After the first 15 packet groups of one second each are broadcast, the next one second will contain the first packet group re-broadcast. The next second will have the 16th packet group. The next one to follow will be the 2nd packet group re-broadcast. So every second a new packet group and its 15 second earlier packet group is alternately broadcast. This provides the receiver a 15 second delay to re-load the packets if they got corrupted in the first attempt. An illustration is placed below. 'P' denotes the packet group per second and its timing sequence. They are broadcast every second. P1 --> P15 --> P1 --> P16 --> P2 --> P17 --> P3 --> P18 --> P4 --> P19 --> P5 --> P20 --> P6 --> P21 --> P7 --> P22 --> P8 --> P23 --> P9 --> P24 --> P10 --> P25 --> P11 --> P26 --> P12 --> P27 --> P13 --> P28 --> P14 --> P29 --> P15 --> P30 As you can see, after every 15 seconds a re-broadcast of old packets takes place to help the receiver catch up with broken packets. The delay time can be chosen after experimenting with different time delays. This will reduce the bandwidth by half but offer a self correction for unidirectional broadcasts. To increase bandwidth, a higher transmission frequency can be chosen. The proposed UFB-15 Protocol is free to anyone to modify and correct for better transmission quality. The only condition is that it should be released under the GPL license so that anyone can make use of it freely. Another method of reducing reception errors is to avoid transmitting an ISO file as a whole. Instead, it can be transmitted as a set of files just as they exist on the CD/DVD. Individual files being smaller, can be corrected easily and will not disturb the entire ISO file block. hello all, I need to know how I can configure vsftp or proftp (kindly suggest which one is more stable ). I have the following needs. 1. user should be able to log into his home directory by default. 2. I don't want to chroot jail the user in his home directory . I have shared /var/www for use by public and thus I need to allow user to change directory to such shared folders. regarding printing, I will like to know if I can share the printer on another machine running linux? both the sharing and accessing machines are linux based. I tried doing it but while the printer is working fine on linux, I can't share the same with other linux machines in the network? I have dhcp on all machines so there is no static ip, is that the problem? I am running fedora core 6 on all desktop machines. so can some one guide me please? Krishnakant.

Linux Download Satellite?

Hello All, I was comparing rates for broadband internet for downloading linux distro isos and find that over a period of one year, the rates are still high, compared to the number of cds/dvds that can be downloaded. For example a 600/- per month NU plan becomes 7200/- per year. How many CDs or DVDs would a person actually download in one year for 7200/-? Plus, many places in India, Asia as well as Africa are still undeveloped and broadband is not available. The World Space satellite radio is a technology that was meant to spread radio to the whole of Asia and Africa. The receivers now start at a Rs. 1500/- one time investment. So can the world Linux community come together and launch its own satellite with multiple channels, each channel representing a linux brand, like Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Gentoo etc. The downloads will be in the form of serial broadcasts in the form of a programme schedule. A timer in the receiver records the ISO download at that time. A mini HDD inside the receiver can record the data. This helps those who don't have facilities to mount antennas or don't face the satt. They can take the receiver and antenna outside, download and then come back in to transfer it to their pcs. At high one way speeds, downloads should be very fast. The entire service should be free of cost to download. How much would such a satellite cost and which country has the minimum taxes for such a launch? The entire linux community could contribute for this, along with donations from big distro companies and some Govts. It should last us for 15 years. Hello all, I'm currently following my CCNA (Cisco certified network associate) course. I'm almost done with it. I want to support my networking course with some programming skills. Where to start from ?? I have been to NIIT & already checked with them about language course, they said "C" & "C++" will be covered in a period of 2 months. I personally do not feel that 2-months time is sufficient for those two languages. Also, i keep reading about 'RUBY' & 'Python' and i gather that RUBY is much easy to learn for beginner like me. So, any experts out there can please point me to any institute which offers courses in RUBY / Python ? Is there any pre-requisite for learning those languages (like familiarity with syntax of "C" or any other language for that matter) ?? I have a requirement of adding different images or signatures in every outgoing mail from the MTA. We are setting up a mail infrastructure in our office and haven't yet chosen any MTA. Does anybody have any experience in this situation and will any MTA allow writing a custom plug-in which attaches different signatures with different mails. All ideas are welcome. I felt that this mail is not off topic for any of the mailing lists I have posted it to, and it is about time we had a technical, as opposed to sentimental or loyalty based look at the .deb and .rpm file formats, I have read the acceptable use policies of all three lists, and I think this is not in violation of any of them. I apologize if I am mistaken] It might be instructive to compare package file formats on a purely technical level: http://kitenet.net/~joey/pkg-comp/ This is a fairly authoritative document, and well worth understanding. Here follows commentary on the major points of difference oj just the rpm and deb format (please read the URL for details regarding other package formats). 1) Data unpack-able by standard tools, meta-data accessible by standard tools, and ability to create a .deb with standard (non distribution specific) tools: .debs are just ar archives of tar-balls, and can be unpackaged, inspected, and created using cp, chmod, ar and tar. rpm's need a special tool. Now, why is this important at all? Well, think of a classified environment, where you do not want to rely on the packaged tool to help you with forensics; but you have a trusted solaris box. 2) Package relationships: The .deb format has a more nuanced set of relationships, incorporating recommendations and suggested packages, and orders packages by priority as well as group. rpm does not have the nuanced relationship, nor priority, but it does have file based dependencies, and easily extract-able copyright information so it is easier to marshal packages by copyright info. Personally, I am of the opinion that file dependencies are a mixed bag; they complicate the package dependency graph with edges that are different from a package dependency; added to the less nuanced dependency and priority information, they make the installation ordering of rpm's far less sophisticated. dpkg goes through a song and dance ordering packages with topological sorting of the graph, breaking installation into chunks to ensure that no conflicting packages ever are unpacked at the same time, unpacking and configuring packages in dependency order, and rolling back failed installation. rpm does installations on a best effort basis, and thus failures at critical stages leave the system in an untenable state. 3) rpm can mark documentation files (makes it easier to find docs), and has ghost files, files which are not shipped in the package but are registered as being owned by the package. For documentation, Debian relies on convention; all package documentation is found in /usr/share/doc/$package; but ghost files are clearly a plus for rpms. 4) Debian packages may run binaries at install and un-install times. I am not sure if this is a major plus. 5) Package verification and triggers -- rpm has them, and package verification is one of the major features missing in a .deb. triggers, well, there is a technical proposal currently being debated about adding triggers to dpkg, but obviously, Debian is playing catch-up here. 6) New sections in the package format: .debs were designed to be extensible, and whole new sections can be added to the package by adding yet another tar-ball or the ar archive. Some of the future additions being planned are detached signatures by various keys; developers key, build daemon maintainer key, archive maintainers key, release manager key, mirror master key, -- in a new section of the package file. So, new data sections, compiled binaries for more than one sub-arch, or 32 and 64 bit binaries -- they can be added easily to a new section, and dpkg be told how to deal with the new sections by inspecting the .deb format version. rpm's can't as easily cope with unseen new requirements. manoj -- "Nuclear war can ruin your whole compile." Debian Etch Installation Report

The installer has a handy facility for taking screenshots if you're curious. Also, I found a MAJOR security bug with respect to the sudo integration. I enabled it and found that root login with a blank password was possible. I haven't tried updating the system yet. If the bug persists, I'll report it. We have got a stall for Ubtunu-India Team and have prepared banners and fliers about Ubuntu & the Loco Team. Evolution mail client configuration help

Hi list, I'm just trying out evolution as my new mail client. The problem is that I cant find a option to wrap the lines at 72 characters i.e. I cant set the wrapping! RHEL 4 - Cannot ping.

Hi. I cannot ping any system and no system can ping me on my RHEL 4 AS. SElinux is disabled. No iptables rules are specified. Default installation. hosts.allow, deny are blank. System is HP-Compaq V50000 notebook. ifconfig shows my eth0 properly configured. mii-tool shows link ok. Haven't seen anything like this before. Any pointers ? Regards, NMK.

Linux Compatible Laptops

Hello, I bought a Compaq V3033AU few months back. Turion X2 1.6, 1GB RAM , 100GB HDD, 14.1 wide screen. and rest of the regular features. I've tested it with FC5 32 bit , FC5 64 bit , Gentoo 64 bit, OpenSuse 10.2 but stuck to Gentoo 64 bit in the end. The laptop works well with all the versions I mentioned. The graphics are great with the Nvidia proprietery driver. For wireless I had to use ndiswrapper but I think it might work with the native bcm43xx driver in 2.16.20 . Ofcourse, I am using the i386 binary version of Firefox. Blackdown Java as well as Flash work fine. With the alsa oss emulation I get audio too inside firefox ! Whats your budget ? I think the current starting price of the Compaq V3000 series is around 42000/- . excess downloads on Ubuntu

I have a system with Ubuntu Dapper, firefox, Opera and Evolution email client running. After i activated the Connection properties button I notice that a lot of downloading continues to happen even when the system is idle. the downloading stops only after at least 6 to 8 MBs are downloaded every time I activate MTNL triband. How do I stop this? Every MB costs One Rupee so its obviously very expensive. Shiv Kumar

Hello List, I have created a setup consisting of : 1. Samba-PDC server running Centos Linux 4.4, 32 bit, Samba version 3.0.9.1.3E.10, named A 2. This server is joined by three Samba workstations running Centos Linux 4.4, 32 bit, Samba version 3.0.9.1.3E.10, Named B, C & D. The workstations (B, C & D) are authenticated by PDC (A). There are Unix groups on PDC which are converted to NT-groups on A (PDC), using the command : # net groupmap add ntgroup="group-name" unixgroup="group-name" type=d The 3 workstations share files that are given group-wise ACL permissions. When I join the workstations to the PDC server through authconfig command, the workstation is shown as joined. When I use the command "getent -g" , it does not show the PDC group. It shows the groups of the local workstation only. The ACL permissions are not working. I am using the command : # setfacl -m g:DOMAIN\\groups:rwx /foldername I get the error message : setfacl: Option -m: Invalid argument near character 3 I seem to be missing something, because, on completing the setup, this worked for 4 hours and then stopped. Hi All, This is just a brief writeup on my experience with installing Linux on the Intel DG965RY motherboard. Hardware -------- Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @2.4GHz Intel DG965RY Motherboard 1 GB DDR2-533 RAM 250GB SATA HDD PATA Emprex DVD+-RW Software i386 ------------- Suse 10.1 Suse 10.2 Debian Sarge Knoppix 5.1.1 Fedora Core 6 Mandriva Software x86_64 --------------- Suse 10.1 x86_64 Debian Etch AMD64 Fedora Core 6 x86_64 CDROM detection --------------- Out of all the software mentioned above, NONE of them except for Fedora Core 6 even proceeded further than the CDROM detection stage. The DG965RY board uses the Marvell PATA chipset which is not supported by the linux at the moment (though there are some patches available in the kernel tree). All the distros would boot and then fail to detect a valid installation disk in the drive. The solution on google is to add the "all-generic-ide" option while booting. It didn't work for any of the distros. Only the Fedora distros would actually proceed beyond the CDROM detection phase and start the installation procedure. The complete option set recommended for this board is "all-generic-ide irqpoll pci=nommconf". Installation ------------ Having a dual core system, I obviously wanted to use virtualization so I opted for the virtualization package while customizing my install. The install proceeded normally and within 30-40 mins I had an installed Fedora Core 6 system with Xen virtualization. Unfortunately it was horribly unstable. Being a new system, I didn't know if the issue was with my hardware or software so I reinstalled Fedora (both i386 and x86_64) multiple times with various combinations of bios settings, installation options, etc. Nothing worked. The system would lock and crash within 10 mins of use. Yesterday I installed a bare minimum Fedora Core 6 x86_64 option again with no virtualization. Lo and behold, it worked beautifully. No crashes, very stable with the 2.6.18 kernel. Booting ------- The install doesn't add the full option line to the kernel in the grub menu.lst. It just adds the pci=nommconf option. The line has to be manually edited in the menu.lst file. Browsing -------- Browsing, of course, doesn't work out of the box since it enables IPV6 by default. Disabling IPV6 worked and I could browse the net. Updates ------- The default yum repository configured is from download.fedora.redhat.com which is so slow that yum timeouts trying to retrieve repomd.xml. Same with the default configured mirrorlist. The option was to create a local mirror list with mirrors added manually from Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc. This worked and a "yum update" updated 300 packages by downloading 421 MB from the mirrors. (1 night's work with the DSLNU plan from MTNL) Open Issue ---------- Even though I have added "irqpoll" in the kernel option, the boot message says that IRQ #19 not working or something and that I should use the irqpoll option !!! Haven't yet checked this on google. Any inputs will be welcome. Summary ------- I now have a working Fedora system with the 2.6.19 kernel and updated packages. It is still barebones and I have to install all the productivity and development software but now I don't anticipate any difficulties. I have not added my printer/scanner/camera, etc. I'll try and update this when I do so. Hope this helps others using this board. Regards, Rajesh

Hi all, i've finished downloading all 3 Debain Etch DVD iso images for i386. These are the full install DVD's. i have also written 2 sets of them on DVD's. One set is going to be passed to HBCSE so that more people can make copies, i spoke to Anurag about the same. The other is with me, i'm willing to exchange it for 3 blank Sony DVD-R's. i can't burn them that often as its pretty time consuming and my writer only supports DVD burning max at 2x. Let's see if we can work out something. Hello All, The NGO that Krishnakant is assisting in converting to Linux, plans to buy 4 laptops that will be used for demonstration sessions in multimedia as well as web, graphics and office applications. So the lappys have to run proper sound as well as video. Krish is right now in Kerala so I am posting this message on their behalf. Those who have recently purchased laptops and are running linux properly on them, please give their suggestions and opinions for lappys that install linux out of the box. DSDT and ACPI

Hello All, I was checking out DSDT and ACPI on the net and found that many BIOS manufacturers are giving incomplete ACPI tables for on-board hardware. http://acpi.sourceforge.net/dsdt/index.php ACPI was meant to make hardware compatible with different OSes through a common interface. So if the tables are broken and yet everything works fine in M$ then is it because M$ gets the other incomplete half to make it fully complete? Something other distros will not get? It could also be the heatsink has dried up. this is a common issue, do you hear any specific sounds when you try and put the machine on? If you want, you can get the mobo repaired too (if possible), if you are in mumbai, you can go to esskay in lamington road and give it to them. If its the heatsink paste, you can get Arctic Silver 5. Its an amazing product. Just make sure you read the online application manual. A single drop (size of uncooked grain of rice) is generally good enough for a p4 system. Not to mention it brings down the core temperature upto 8-10 degrees when you clean the fan + apply this. The cooler your machine, the faster/better it performs. Alternatively if you are considering a new system, amd's are okay, but if you want to be future proof, the core 2 duo would be a better bet. AMD64 gives you the 64 architecture, but its still officially an emulated architecture.Unless you went for the opterons and stuff. The core2 would give you the benefits of SMP (if enabled in your kernel). I normally prefer AMD products to Intel (from the early 700mhz duron, and more with the t-birds and even more since the athlons), have always favoured the underdogs, but bottom line is still performance. But this would however mean a bit more expenses now, as compared to performance you gain in the long run. Problem checking /home with fsck

hi, A few days ago I faced a strange problem when I booted my laptop which runs Dapper on an i-386 and it went for a file system scan after 30 mounts it detected file system errors in root partition which got solved when I ran fsck from the recovery shell but the problem in my /home partition persisted Everytime I restarted the laptop it gave the following lines: buffer i/o error on sectors contiguously from 2661645 (i hope i m not missing any digit) This took 20 minutes because it was going line by line for each location Then I tried to fix the prolem in recovery mode to see what was happening WHAT I FOUND OUT WAS There was a problem for which "ide: error not recognised" was returned,and then SeekDriveReady returned error in the LBA sector...What else could go wrong was the question? Then it logged me in and strangely I found everything was working fine even configurations in my home directory.... So the first thing I did was in fstab i removed check of /home so tht it doesnt exasperate me for 20 mins filling my screen with buffer i/o error n then location counting....................... I will probably check it again with parted because fsck failed again for those sectors Now can anyone has any idea about an idea tht what might be wrong n everything is fine so it is worth bothering or should I go n sue Acer for a new hard disk cos my warranty covers me till mid JUNE.... Password less scp

Greetings, I have been facing this problem for the last couple of days. I have 2 remote Linux Servers located at Mumbai and chennai. I need to copy files to my other machine in the night. Problem is that scp command asks for password on every execution. redhat knowledge base ( http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_45_8645.shtm) has highligted a way to use scp command w/o any password. Despite me using their steps, i am unable to do the same. Can some one help me ??? Rgds Gopi

hello, I am going to try an experiment with printer sharing. I will like to know how to share a printer installed on a fedora machine? by the way aside from printer I had one more doubt. if I share a folder of a fedora machine via samba, is there any thing additional I need to do for accessing it from another fedora machine? I know how to access a linux based system from the windows machine but I don't know about sharing computers and accessing folders on a linux to linux machine. may be I am missing some thing stupid. so kindly guide me. Hi I have the following system Intel P4-2.4ghz processor on a D845gvsr mobo 256mb RAM Samsung combo drive(CD-R +DVD) 2 40gig HDD. The whole system was assembled in Oct 2004 Recently my pc stopped working and I was told that it is a motherboard problem and needs to be replaced. Now I am looking for a mobo+processor combo and many friends suggested AMD64 based processors. Points to be considered 1. My usage is limited to basic office applications, surfing, songs, videos, chat etc ie a desktop user. 2. I need to run some games on it for my kid and as such also need XP as my primary OS 3. Being a linux enthu most of my usage is on a Linux distro. 4. I also try out various new distros. Is it advisable to go for a AMD processor and motherboard combo. If yes---What are the suitable configs (AMD+mobo) If no----- What are the alternatives (Pentium etc) Thanks Ninad

I see that kword allows you to read a pdf file, however it doesn't let you export it back to pdf. apologies for improper use of the language, was used to the sms lingo. extremely sorry. i have reframed my issue:- i had installed kubuntu recently n then ubuntu too(both from the cd), and in both, i could not use the internet, oculd not open web sites. i downloaded the sify installer for linux, dn followed te instructions as was written in the manual/readme file. i set the ip, dns everything but i still could not use the internet.when i logged in, it woud simply show the timestamp ,nothing further. could u help me out pls i got the reply when "ping"ed the gateway, but when i tried logging in using the sify installer, it would simply not connect, it is supposed to show my account details,etc., but it would simply not do so apologies again to mrugesh n vihan ____________________________________________________________________________________ Need a quick answer? ubuntu vs knoppix

Just curious, I know distro wars are bad, and well alot of people just say use what best suits you, I am just curious if anyone has had first hand experience between the 2. And if so which would be a more "debian" /apt way to go. And also have a nice clear interface to deal with out of the box, not to mention the support and ease of use. A friend of mine is strongly considering moving away from all MS products. So much so he sold his xbox 360 and has been collecting for a while to be able to buy the ps3. I told him if hes loading up linux on his ps3, he might as well get the exposure on his desktop. After all, that baby will smoke his current AMD 2000. So which distro would you guys suggest and between those 2 and if you have a specific reason why, would be nice so i can tell him. Also if i could grab a DVD off someone (maybe couriered) would be nice. Else I could just download it and have it in a week. Thanks, Satish

965 CD ROM Support Puzzle.

Hello All, Today I got another chance to try live cds on the 965 RYCK with core 2 duo. I tried the Knoppix 5.11 DVD and the DreamLinux 2.2 Live/Install CD ( Morphix Deb based ) that came with this month's LFY. :P In both the disks, the initial boot screen appeared and the Kernel/Image was loaded. when the detection stsrted, it threw up the error of not finding the media files. What puzzles me is that if the PATA support for 965 boards is not yet come out in Linux distros except FC6 and Sabayon, why does the live distro CD even show the boot prompt and load the initial image/kernel? I even got the starting logos and splash screens. Then why does the distro not go on to *fully* load, irrespective of not detecting PATA drivers? If it cannot load PATA drivers, why does it not run on the generic drivers as it begins initially. The initial data came from reading the drive anyway. Manoj, Actually personally I do use debian, every one of my servers run on debian. But remember these are servers, therefore I dont really care about X on those. Personally I have to keep a windows box for certain amount of development and software needed for development. My boxes all run stable in this case sarge since they are all production grade in data centers and offices. I have an additional "play" box i have at home which has ubuntu 6.06 on it, but my usage on that till date minus the installation barely surpasses 1-1.5 hours a month. Thats why i wanted a more outside referance with respect to desktop and usage. I tried out knoppix a few times, somehow always had issues for something or another (not new hardware .. its an AMD 1800XP 1533mhz). Anwyays, between my prior email and now, I asked my friend to choose and he chose kubuntu, so I am probably getting him that. I have started downloading, but if anyone has kubuntu 6.10 on DVD, i'd rather get it off there which would be much faster.. as i guess i would only get 10% every 2-3 hours (cant leave overnight ) Lets see how things go.. hello, in the process of making the people foss aware, I got a contract from a semi gnu/linux aware NGO called uva. the problem however is that they already have a few p4 1.5 ghz computers running ubuntu 6.06 and they seam to have got stuck to it because as what the authorities told me, they get good support from the ubuntu forums when the needs come. now they have decided to buy new computers but are also aware (and sportingly except the fact ) that latest hardware may not work with ubuntu 6.06 lts. for them long time support matters really much and I did not really argue about that. since my recent experience with 102 ggc motherboards has not been good with ubuntu, I will like to know names of some motherboards which are available in the market that can work or have been successfully made to work with ubuntu. my requirements are as follows. 1. the boards should be actively supported and still sold in the hardware market. this is because if by chance there is a problem with those boards I must get relatively quick service. 2. the boards should support seluron 2.8 ghz and p4 3 + ghz processors. 3. I will be of course putting 512 mb of ram into the machine. 4. ubuntu should be known to detect and install the on-board sound card. 5. the lan card should also work. I gave all this details because I don't want to go through the troma of my recent experiences (ronny knows very well what I am talking isn't it?) It seams that the place where I tried the ggc mobo gave so many problems that they eventually have postponed the decision a bit for the next ubuntu version. any ways the point is that I have a hint that mobos which came in market before june 2006 or aug 2006 at the most should be well supported. I want to be with the debian group of distros because ceneors like jtd have justified the reasons to do so. regards. Krishnakant.

Upgrading Sarge to Etch

Hi! I am finally able to install Debian Sarge (3.1) on my system. Here is the system config MoBo: MSI - K8MM-V CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ MEM: 512 MB HDD: 40 GB Mextor SATA CD/DVD: Samsung Combo Now I am thinking of upgrading the Sarge to Etch. Added following repository to source.lst deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian etch main contrib done # apt-get update Now # apt-get upgrade Tells me it will download 75 (71.8MB) upgraded packages # apt-get dist-upgrade Selects 737 upgraded, 345 newly installed, 55 to remove and 2 not upgraded and will download 667MB. :-( Do you think my system will survive this upgrade? Tata Cable Broadband

Hi, Has anyone used Tata's Cable Broadband (not Tata DSL). I have been using Exatt Cablenet all this while and I am really bugged with their downtime. Tata has just recently launched cable broadband in my locality and the introductory schemes are really cheap. However I am concerned about the authentication mechanism. It seems that they are using some browser based authentication scheme so I doubt if there is any problem in connecting through linux. Playing VCDs in Ubuntu.

Hello All, I gave one more shot at trying to play VCDs and DVDs in Ubuntu 6.10 on my desktop. All instructions given on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats were followed but still VCDs would not be opened in Totem. A DVD would play upto the menu but the 'Play' link that comes after that on the screen would not come and the screen would simply remain blank. From the net a useful page was found http://alternativenayk.wordpress.com/2007/01/20/playing-vcds-on-ubuntu-linu… Using apt, gxine and gxineplugins packages were downloaded and that finally helped in playing VCDs as well as DVDs. Gxine has good audio settings options that allow you to set audio levels in order to avoid distortion. The same procedure was followed in the Acer 2428 laptop running Edubuntu 6.06 LTS. I am able to get videos for VCDs as well as DVD but no sound. The system too did not have sound so some ALSA packages were downloaded based on their look and feel. System sound is up but no movie sounds. I am able to record my voice using 'Sound Recorder' but the playback is faint. Could anyone help me out on this? fedora support and reliability question.

hello all, just one question about fedora and this is really very serious because I have got contracts from 3 other big organisations for converting their enterprise to gnu/linux. I found that fedora is having more hardware support than any distro for the latest hardware like ggc mother boards etc. now my question is that what kind of reliability can we expect with fedora and what is the level of support we get? for example ubuntu has a "LTS" meaning Long Time Support policy. I think fedora obviously can't provide this because this is purely community driven project. I am not so sure about mandriva whether is is purely community driven or an organisation is supporting it. any ways the point is that can fedora have that kind of support because new versions come every now and then so can we look for support on fedora? for example if I am using fedora core 6 how long can I get updates and new packages for the same? thanking all. Generally a domain can not be registered by anybody unless you do not renew registration. There is a very decent period given in between. Also I have never seen a domain name based pricing by any domain registrar for new name registrations let alone a renewal. So its out of question for a name renewal wherein the name is legally yours and you can very well shift the registrar if they refuse to play ball. I suppose also that in case of such problems being created by a registrar you can complain to ICANN or some such regional authority. problem with mounting usb drive in debian etch

Hello, i recently upgraded debian from sarge to etch (apt-get dist-upgrade), and since then my usb ain't getting detected. initially my /etc/fstab lines were as follows ### /dev/sda1 /media/usb1 vfat noauto,users,uid=500 0 0 /dev/sda2 /media/usb2 vfat noauto,users,uid=500 0 0 ### but now i get the following error: mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist i checked /dev and saw that "sda?" does not exist at all. but something called "usbdev[123].1_ep[00][81]" exists. using them, however gave me the following error: mount: /media/usb1/ is not a block device big brother google told to check /proc/partitions, but that shows only my HDD partitions, and doesn't show any information about the usb drive :( Thanks for all the help -- warm regards, Pradnyesh Sawant -- If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere. --Anon

[OT] Some Technology Observations.

Hello All, The Homi Bhabha Auditorium at TIFR is just like a cinema hall and it has a projector at the back just like a cinema projector but the difference is that it is a digital projector and for the first time I saw such a big cinema grade and screen size digital projector. Just as some TVs had come out with 3D vision where 2 images with different polarizations were interlaced and broadcast and then viewed through polarized specs, TIFR could also experiment with this technique and give 3D projection a try. Another use for the digital projector would be the future cinema concepts that the film industry is trying out. They plan to set up digital cinemas where the film is simultaneously released through broadband or satellite broadcasts in order to avoid piracy. It is also usefull for Movie On Demand systems where movies can be randomly selected for the particular session without waiting for the cans to arrive. Another observation was that whenever every speaker wanted to start his/her presentation, it would take a few minutes to setup their laptops as they would be connected to the vga cable on stage. Instead of all this wiring, is it possible to use the wireless LAN to broadcast the video-out directly to the projector through a receiver interface? What would be needed is a small application ( which can become a default in future distros ) in the laptop that compresses the video-out and sends it out through the wLAN to the hall's internal computer which then sends it to the projector. So every speaker simply clicks the application button in the laptop to start broadcasting. This will also give total wireless freedom for the speakers to move with their laptops. A wLAN runs at 50 Mbps which means 6.25 MBytes per second which should be more than sufficient for compressed video streams and internet access together. About 2 years ago I had also put forward a concept on this list, where a single projector is used to broadcast multiple images that can be selectively observed by different members of the audience. The projector would project image frames at high speeds. These images would be a combination of different video outputs from different sources. The members of the audience wear special LCD specs that work as a transparent window with a black LCD shutter. There are 2 or mode films being projected in multi frame sequences and the shutter in the glass opens only when its corresponding frame appears. So different people are simultaneously watching different movies in the same hall, using the same projector. Sound is wireless broadcast to individual headphones. Though this is far fetched for now, a small experiment can be carried out to watch at least 2 movies together. There are 2 video outputs available at a frame rate of 25 frames per second and each frame consisting of 2 fields interlaced together. So the video field frequency is 50 Hz. for each movie. The projector is running at 100 Hz. and it interlaces the 2 separate movie fields one after the other in a sequence. The glass shutter is yet to be developed, so a mechanical shutter can be used for experiments. It will be a fan blade type shutter, similar to the ones used in film projectors. 2 persons will individually view the screen through these shutters, but they will be phased to open only at their respective field projection and close during the other. So while person A is watching movie A, person B is watching movie B. Now if the 2 + 2 fields are polarized too, then during each frame session, 2 polarized fields are available. So now 4 people can watch 4 different movies using a combination of a shutter as well as polarized glasses, although with jitter. Novell angered members of the open-source community that develops Linux and other free software programs in November when it entered a wide-ranging business deal with Microsoft. Critics called on the board to punish Novell by banning it from distributing new versions of Linux software, said Moglen. Linux is the most popular variant of open-source software. Unlike proprietary software such as Microsoft Windows, open-source software lets developers share code and add functions and is generally available at no cost. Moglen said the board has not made a decision on the matter but that he expects it to announce a ruling within two weeks. If the foundation decides to take action, the ban would apply to new versions of Linux covered under a licensing agreement due to take effect in March. John Dragoon, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Novell, declined to comment saying it would be premature to speculate on how the issue would be resolved. "We'll take a look at the final determination and we'll react accordingly," he said. Software companies such as Novell sell standardized versions of open-source programs with custom features, maintenance plans and technical support. Linux sales accounted for 5 percent of the $967 million in revenue that Novell reported last year. The deal with Microsoft has turned into a far bigger cash generator as it calls for Microsoft to make two upfront payments totaling $348 million. The two companies agreed to jointly sell their products and also develop technologies to make it easier for businesses to use Linux alongside Windows software. They will also license each other's intellectual property. Members of the open-source community have called on Novell to pull out of the pact, saying it would undermine the patent position of Linux software and also give Microsoft an edge in persuading businesses to use Microsoft products over Linux and other types of open-source software. Jefferies & Co. analyst Katherine Egbert said Novell's business was likely to suffer if it was banned from using the new versions of Linux. It would have to boost spending on research and development to upgrade its software without access to the latest versions of the open-source code provided by the Foundation. Novell shares ended down 2 cents at $7.16 on the Nasdaq. The stock is likely to trade down before the Foundation discloses its ruling as investors stay on the sidelines to avoid the worst-case scenario, analysts said. [OT] Hardware Problems - Maybe CPU/Mobo

Hi, My monitor suddenly turned itself off while I was using the computer in the afternoon. The keyboard stopped working too. Since then, I've tried: Connecting the monitor to the onboard graphics instead of the AGP card. Replacing the power supply. Both the power supplies with all the load like hard disks and DVD drives disconnected. Two different monitors. No go. Then I had an idea and tried removing the RAM. There were no beeps, so probably, even POST isn't reached. I then disassembled, cleaned and reassembled everything. Nothing worked. When I switch on the computer, the monitor doesn't get any signal. The power supply and CPU fans are on. Any suggestions or ideas? I can't find a compatible processor or motherboard anywhere to test out mine.
