Talking about giving out your email IDs to an unknown service... Well Yahoo, Google, etc.. were all unknown when they first started off. Weren't they? Yahoo! does ask for your alternate email ID. Does it not? Now what if they start giving off the alternate ID to spammers or some such elements? What happens then? You start victimizing all those poor souls? I have used Meebo, and I know people who still actively use it. NEVER ONCE have they felt comromised by Meebo. Obviously that does not make Meebo the example of honesty and purity, but it does call for some respect. I need to use Meebo, because I think most IM clients for GNU/Linux are useless. Yes useless. The list includes GNU Freetalk, GAIM, Kopete, X-Chat, Irssi, etc.. I know this sounds obnoxious but I will give you my reasons for saying this. I spend most of my time on the Internet behind a firewall that is very restrictive and seems to have most of the ports (including Jabber, IRC) blocked. But the thing is the Yahoo! messenger for WIndoze and GTalk client for Windoze all work. They both work just like that... out of the box. But GAIM does not, neither does Freetalk, neither does Kopete. I know there is no magic involved (this list had once lectured me on this... although I was never told something I did not know before). The apparent reason is that the ports used by these clients all seem to be blocked. But then why does the Windoze clients not get any obstruction? Why? Obviously the Jabber, Yahoo, MSN, etc. protocols have nothing to do with WIndoze or GNU/Linux. But the thing is that it does NOT work on GNU/Linux. Why??? I am not an expert on these protocols. Atleast not yet. Maybe I will become one soon, but the fact is why cant one use GAIM to do Gtalk, Yahoo, Jabber when on the same network people are having a gala time using the same services on Windoze? Why?? This where Meebo comes in. If we want to popularise GNU/Linux, then it is not a GREAT idea to tell people: "Hey this is Free Software, use it. Its great, its secure, its cooler. But give up chatting." For the non-wizard Meebo is the saviour. One cant explain a non-wizard the intricacies of firewalls, ports, etc.. They (to some extent that includes me) just need a working system. At the end of it all, I still use GNU Freetalk and BitchX and Irssi but I have to do it by sshing into a public shell server, but thats a solution which cant be applied to all. DHCP but no server

Hello All, Today I tried out an experiment on a client's cablenet connection in windows. It was a pppoe connection with no static or dynamic ip assigned to the ethernet card, only a list of dns servers. By default the card was set to dhcp but since there was no dhcp server existing, the system would take time to search for a server before loading the full desktop. After a futile search, windows by default assigns a fake ip of 169.XXX.168.XXX and a mask of 255.255.0.0. The real ip, gateway is assigned by the pppoe. I set the system to static ip and gave the same fake ip and subnet. This solved the problem of the system hanging around for dhcp and the pppoe would then do its required job of enabling internet access. The same trick could be tried out for linux based systems in similar cablenet situations so that they don't hang around for dhcp servers. What are those? O'Reilly's new e-book 'Building Tag Clouds in Perl and PHP' by Jim Bumgardner explains a concept every serious user of cyberspace would have at least heard of. Says Bumbardner: "Tag clouds are everywhere on the Web these days. First popularized by the web sites Flickr, Technorati, and del.icio.us, these amorphous clumps of words now appear on a slwe of web sites as visual evidence of their membership in the elite corps of 'Web 2.0'." Wikipedia says: "A tag cloud (more traditionally known as a weighted list in the field of visual design) is a visual depiction of content tags used on a website. Often, more frequently used tags are depicted in a larger font or otherwise emphasized, while the displayed order is generally alphabetical. Thus both finding a tag by alphabet and by popularity is possible. Selecting a single tag within a tag cloud will generally lead to a collection of items that are associated with that tag." If you're a content person like this reviewer, why bother at all about all this stuff? As long as I get my neatly-laid out keywords that give me a clue of what's where, why worry? But then, someone has to do the job of getting the tag clouds to work. And that's where this book is born out of a need. It may be a fad. But one which has "real merits" when used popularly, as Bumgardner explains. This e-book analyses what is and isn't a tag cloud. It offers design tips for using them effectively, and also shows how to collect tags and display them in the tag cloud format. Interesting background on issues like craiglist's weighted cities list, and statistically improbable phrases (SIPs) or capitalized phrases (CAPs) lists provided by Amazon.com. SIP has word order corelating to the improbability of the phrase. In the CAP list, the word order relates to the frequency with which the phrase appears in the book. After some interesting history about tag clouds -- which takes us to Flickr (who doesn't know this photography-sharing web site?), tag roots in the blogging community, and Jim Flanagan's Zeitgeist idea -- things start to get technical. There's code, graphs and how-tos.Time for me to leave it to techies, who prefer raw coding to merely writing book reviews!

YUM and Pirut

I find both YUM and Pirut quite slow as compared to APT and Synaptic. I don't think this has anything to do with my Internet connection, since I have used APT (and Synaptic) on the very same machine and connection as YUM and Pirut. Is this really an issue with YUM? Wouldn't it be better if someone took a simple version of linux like Ubuntu Dapper (actually that's the only flavor I know!!) threw in another CD with Automatix, PLF repositories and a few desktop icons that can be installed with one click after OS is fired up. Suddenly the first-time user of linux would have a very workable competitor to Windows XP. What do people here think of this? Shiv Kumar

The Wifi card which was not working in FC5 started functioning in Ubuntu Dapper and the latest Knoppix, while the unresponsive CD-ROM had no problems in the latest Knoppix. It is true that geeks & hackers with some effort can fix most of these issues. I don't claim to be a geek, but I feel even those belonging to the 'uber' class would not always have the time to manually rectify their hardware problems. Although it may appear so, it is not so simple always. Acer is one manufacturer whose hardware is always troublesome on GNU/Linux. It might be Acer's fault that they ship non-standard H/W, but I feel the FOSS world needs to do something about this. I have seen 4 Acer systems, all laptops. One whose battery was not detected, one had trouble with its Wifi, one had trouble with both its CD-ROM and Wifi, and one has issues with the sound-card. Hello everybody , I am porting an application from hp-ux to red hat enterprise linux 3.0 . in one of the source codes there is this conversion done of a decimal number to a number with a given base . which is called the string representation of the decimal number . the function is ltoastr . syntax : ltoastr(long integer , base ) ex : ltoastr(157 . 16) . this is will convert the number 157 to its base 16 representation . this is a library function and its in HP-Unix . i need a similar function which provides the same functionality in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 . I am trying to find t it . However if anyone knows about it would you plz pass on the same information at manoj.bohara(a)wipro.com . I will be highly obliged . When I first started this thread few days back, my objective was not to find a faster alternative for YUM on Fedora. I had been using Synaptic and APT on Fedora Core 2, but stopped doing so after upgrading to FC5. Partly due to my laziness, and partly due to the fact that I read APT support will slowly be discontinued in Fedora. After all if YUM is being promoted (Pirut was written for YUM replacing system-config-packages) by the Fedora Project, it should have something in it after all. Dear Ms Fletcher I am in possession of your mailed offer advertising PC guides entitled "At Home With Your PC". On reading this, together with the sample guides enclosed, it appears that the material you are selling (at a huge discount from the advertised price) is a 'helpful guide' aimed at home users of personal computers running versions of the Microsoft Windows operating systems. However, this clarification appears nowhere in the text of the offer, which only refers to PCs as though the term 'PC' implies solely such devices. There is no mention at all of GNU/Linux or Macintosh or any other widely used operating system for personal computers, which in themselves are not (for your information) confined to a single operating system, and definitely not solely to versions of a proprietary operating system that constitute a virtual monopoly of consumer's mindspace, probably due in large part to such misleading public messages purveyed by prominent media organisations. In fact, you do not even mention the trademark 'Microsoft Windows' or its equivalent, thus implying in substance that there are no alternative systems in existence. It is only on reading the 'sample guides' in detail that it becomes clear that your offer relates only to use of Microsoft Windows and additional computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel sold by the same company. In very fine print (and at right angles to the normal text), the guide pages carry a certificate that the content of the guide has information pertinent to home users of computers running Windows 95 (not correctly trademarked Microsoft Windows 95) and above. There is no such disclaimer in the text or margins of your offer letter. I find this a shocking misuse of the goodwill that the Reader's Digest has built up over the years, one that supports free choice for the consumer to purchase goods and services, without being misguided by the media. I am copying this mail, in protest, to public service lists relating to the use of computers in India, and to users of alternate operating systems. I trust that others will be informed in time of the limitations of your offer and be able to make an informed judgment regarding their own purchase decisions. Unfortunately I do not immediately have at hand the mailing address of the Consumer Society of India or of the Advertising Standards Council of India, who also should be informed. I do hope you will immediately either unconditionally withdraw this partisan offer, or suspend it until your editorial team can expand your offering to users of alternate systems, or make it clear that your offer is indeed limited as described, explaining exactly why you have chosen in this case to withhold important information, thus relaxing your journalistic independence. Hi list, I am currently learning neural networks as a hobby. I would like to implement them in C and on Linux. I have googled around and there seems to be immense data on them yet its all theoretical. I am currently learning the BPN algorithm whose logic I am able to understand but the math is a bit tough. I would like to know if there is/are some book / website / white papers which talk about Neural Networks from implementation / performance point of view. extracting metadata from media

Hi everyone, I am trying to extract meta data from various file formats, viz JPEG, BMP, GIF, PSD and AVI, MPEG and MP3. I was trying to look for a generic library which would support all (or most) of the given file formats. The only library(C/C++) I could find was libextractor but I couldn't use it because I want it to work on both platforms. Thus, For MP3 i am using id3lib and for JPEG exiv2lib. I would be grateful if anyone could point me to libraries which extract metadata from the other file formats (viz BMP, GIF, PSD and AVI, MPEG). Having a gateway outside the network

Hi, I was installing Ubuntu for my fiancee and found a strange little problem when configuring her network. Her IP address is 172.20.x.x and her gatway is 10.10.10.2. Ubuntu cried out loud about the gateway not being part of the network and didn't let me configure that way. What I did was add a startup script that added a direct route to the gateway first and then added the default gateway just after the interface is initialized (I removed the gateway line from /etc/network/interfaces). While this works, this seemed a very ugly fix to me. This odd network setting "Just Works" on Windows. Is there an easier way to do this that I'm missing out on? I've also tried adding the "up route add..." line in /etc/network/interfaces. That doesn't seem to work. Thanks, Siddhesh -- http://siddhesh.tk

I am using Fedora Core 5, and am behind a Squid proxy. Where is the Space gone ??

I installed Fedora Core 5 all worked well , got the latest version of Eclipse downloaded and it seems I have run out of space to extract it . Making Sendmail co-exist with ListManager

We have installed Lyris ListManager on a Redhat AS 3 server. It uses ports 25 (for mailing) and 82 (for web-based admin). We also want to run Sendmail on this server so that mails can be sent using the PHP mail() function. How do we configure an alternative port for the Sendmail server? The second (major) problem is that the Sendmail user was deleted as part of hardening the system (since Sendmail was not need at the time). Now, we find that starting and stopping Sendmail is not smooth at all. The Sendmail client (sm-client) shows its status as "service stopped but subsys locked". Hello List, I have been searching for offline dictionaries for Redhat Linux 9.0. I haven't been able to search one. By default, I have Kdict with KDE, but it requires an internet connection. Though, I should not be saying this, but in Windows, there is a software called WORDWEB that is free as in "free bear". HyperLinks to UNC Paths not working in Firefox

Hi everyone the problem is identical to this guy's post... www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t85763-unc-path-hyperlink-syntax.html If anyone can figure out the unbelievably precise solution, please enlighten me. I have a html page (served by ASP.NET.. that shouldn't matter right ;) ) which has a hyperlink to a UNC Share. so <a id="something" href="file://///WinMachine/Share/Dir1/File.ext">Text</a> I needed 5 slashes for Firefox. IE worked with some internal magic. Now here's the strange part. With the above syntax, the URL works in IE. It shows up in FireFox but doesn't work i.e. Click (nothing happens), right click menu (doesn't function). If I copy the link, open a new tab and paste it there, the Run_Or_Save dialog comes up (expected behavior) Next if I save the HTML locally and open it up in firefox, then the links work straight out of the page. Spent the last 3 hours to get this thing work identically in both browsers... I have already tried the checkloaduri thing mentioned here. Skype on Linux

Hi guys, I've installed Skype-1.2.0.18 on my FC2 system. It worked out of the box. But the problem is that voice breaks a lot to such an extent that a decent conversation becomes impossible. I am NATed behind my own router. I've forwarded all ports above 1024 and allowed UDP on them. I have 64Kbps connection but the latency is high on my connection. I get more like 48-56Kbps speeds. As I understand Skype isn't very bandwidth efficient. Can someone point me to a better VoIP software or some hacks so that Skype plays nicely with my connection? Thanks. -- Dinesh A. Joshi

Technology against terrorism.

Hello All, I have been pondering over some ideas to use technology against terrorism. Please keep this thread related to technology only without getting into Govt. bashing. The ideas have been borrowed from the old kings and emperors as well as server room security. The first part deals with providing wireless ID cards to all citizens of India, starting with all the cities and going into the villages. These cards can be radio, magnetic or plain optical like the bar code stickers that are momentarily scanned before a red light scanner. The optical option is the cheapest and is already used in shops for making final bills. Every railway station complex should be sealed and everyone entering the station must produce their ID card to be scanned for keeping a record of everyone entering and exiting the complex. Along with that, they must face a camera that records their faces too. No ID card means no entry. The same security system can be used in all public complexes like Govt. offices, schools, colleges. Even BEST buses can be fillted with these scanners at the entrance and exit of the bus. Anyway, most buses are single decker and allow only one thin person or half fat person to enter at a time. That way we will also learn to queue properly and the passengers can get in like humans instead of being herded like cattle by the conductors doing an early `ting ting'. The other part is to use the security system that old kings and emperors used. They created walled cities where entry and exit was restricted by guards manning the fort gates. All major cities can put up an international-border grade barbed wire fence with gates for entry and exit. Everyone entering and exiting the city must provide an ID card and also be photographed for records. Some system should also be in place for outstation trains to go through this check. Every foreigner who lands in India must get a temporary ID card made at the airport to be used just like other Indian ID cards. Whenever there is any terrorist strike or a major armed robbery/dacoity etc., the gates will be shut for some hours, preventing the culprits from simply walking away and catching the next train to freedom. This is inconvenient, but a good deterrent. Extra checking will be done after that to scan all those who leave after any attack. Well thats all for now, any comments or suggestions? I am trying to configure my Wireless LAN in such a way that it can route packets from other nodes to a access points, so that nodes outside the reach of the access point can route their packets through my card. I understand that I need to put my card into Ad-hoc mode for this to work. However, # iwconfig eth1 mode Ad-Hoc # service network restart fails to look up IP information for my card. DHCP is configured in the network. I have tried to put the card in Auto and Repeater mode too through iwconfig, with the same results. Linux not allowed in DCA

Hi guys, They are back at it again. The Department of Company Affair (DCA) is a part of the ministry of finance. They have converted all their offline sysetems, forms, etc to online where you can make applications, file documents, etc connected with private and public limited companies. To make life simpler, they have come up with the concept of a PFO (an outsourced Public Front Office). That means, if you are qualified and meet their criteria, you can set up a small facility (you need 2-5 pcs, scanners, internet connection, etc) where people can come and use your facility to do the online with with DCA. First, people who do not have things like digital signature can use the facility to get their work done, and those who do not want to spend time figuring out how to use the system can come and use your facilty as your office staff will fill it in for them. There will be no need for anyone to go to the Registror of Companies (ROC) or the office of DCA. This will become more important in smaller cities where ROC office is not there and currently people are travelling to ROC offices. Also the PFO will help in issue of Company Director Identity numbers, digital signatures, etc. The rules for this has been issued in June 2006 as a part of the DCA-21 project. The rules specifically say that you MUST have PCs with Windows XP or Windows 2000 professional loaded on the PCs or you are not eligible for setting up the front office. So, you can not use a Linux based system though it would be more than able to do what the DCA PFO is being asked to do. I hope Dr. Nagarjuna and others can take this up to the government. I can provide anyone who needs, a copy of the rules as they have been published in the Management Accounting Journal. Regards Saswata

hi, I need to see what all requests my browser(firefox 1.0.7) is sending.. is there any place where i can make the browser log these things? Or is there like a proxy like thing that i can install and make my browser go through this proxy and then the proxy can spit out the details. Running Firefox 1.5.0.4 from FC5

Hello All, This is my first email to the group and by seeing the previous messages I will get the answer/s here. I m a new linux user and installed FC5 y'day. It was having Firefox 1.5.0.1. I downloaded and extracted the tarball of latest version of firefox which is 1.5.0.4. When I tried to open the executable 'firefox' file.. it opened the new firefox window but of the older version only. So I removed all the folders named Firefox having older version. Then put the latest version Firefox's executable in /usr/bin directory. The tried giving 'firefox' command in console.. it gives me error.. "Cannot find mozilla runtime directory. Exiting." when i try to execute the firefox executable from extracted tarball itself by giving command "./firefox".... it gives me error "./firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"! Can I get help regarding this issue.. How can I start latest version of firefox? ........ AND hi Dinesh! Vivek here! I seen ur replies. For most of the last three days, it gave no output for strings beyond a certain length (that I can say was around 25 characters). Admittedly, its author claims it is for "fun"; but he also mentions that it broke input to the Babelfish service into chunks of 1000 characters, so my sting length shouldn't be a problem. I 've been tasked to make a script that will translate a set of strings from one language to another, reliably. When I tested the script from home, it didn't work yesterday either, but then it worked right now. Any hints/clues would be welcome. Hello All, I have a customer who uses linux (RH9) and sendmail as outgoing SMTP server. There is a strange problem. SMTP server delivers e-mails everywhere around the world except the domains in China. Most of times sendmail gives errors that "lookup failed" and returns e-mails after 5 days of trying. These are domains hosted in China. Sometimes delivery succeeds when I do: sendmail -v -q For some domains it states "invalid sender xyz(a)vsnl.net" and keeps trying for 5days. I tried with local DNS as well as ISP (iqara) DNS. But problem exists with both. On Googleing I found someone having same problem way back in 2001 but there was no solution. Also I found there is lots of control by Chinese government. Is this problem with RH9? or sendmail with RH9? But then why does problem occur only with China? So please let me know if someone has (had) same problem and solution if it was solved. Thanks in advance. Amish. P.S. OT question: anyone know if iqara provides SMTP server?

Does anybody know about a good Ogg Vorbis tag reading tool? I need a command line utility to read tag information from Ogg Vorbis files, as a part of GNU Songanizer. I am in a hurry since without this, GNU Songanizer will only have MP3 support and I do not know the GNU Project's official policy regarding this till I receive an answer from RMS. If anybody can help it would be really great. In the meanwhile, I will keep googling... Thanks a lot, Debarshi

qmail + ldap

Hi This is a snip off from a thread abt how sad some isps are monopolistic coz others bill you more etc ... I m just curious how much bandwidth does an average linuxer need each month ? I know it varies from person to person and all sorts of things but just curious. i browse , chat, email , upload photos , update critical upgrades ( whatever they are called ) each month, voip on skype and a few tools ... my appetite is about 700 - 1000 megs monthly. We work on massive databases and huge graphic imageing files, flash and streaming content files (all ofcourse at our clients offices as it is their work, not mine). Some time back, we did a marketing campaign run for a client where a rich image email was to sent out to 1.8 million registered users of a service. That is huge bandwidth requirement. Unable to read DVDs in Ubuntu

How does one get DVDs to open in Ubuntu? I have a couple of DVDs from Digit magazine to check out. I followed several tips from the websites like installing mc, dvd:rip, etc, but no go. I find it hard to believe that voip/voice is the only missing element that can make or break a data networking service. I hope I am not repeating something everyone knows (or that I may have posted already) but there will be a conference in Dharamsala in October this year (summit.airjaldi.com) focusing on wireless data naetworking for rural development. Issues of FLOSS will be prominent - I do hope some of you take an interest and sign up to conduct workshops/lectures on practical matters that may help nascent rural network operators understand better how to create viable networks. Or even urban service providers, but so far wifi seems to be the sole preserve of a few fantastically priced hotels and airports. --- Vickram

Linux 2.6.17-3 and GF FX5200

Has any one tried 2.6.17-3. 2.6.8.1 (sarge i386) keeps crashing on boot with a GF FX5200se agp card on an i845 mobo (onboard vga disabled). However booting with on board graphics enabled is fine. Strangely running X with Xinerama with both on board and the FX5200 and two monitors works like a charm - except for tvout on the FX5200 Was wondering wether to use 2.6..17-3 or 2.6.16-20. -- Rgds JTD

Well regarding the VCD problem....even in my FC5 box , VCD's dont play in Kaffeine(I tried for the first time yesterday.) But they played perfectly in Mplayer. With the Xine libs and w32 Dlls I could play MPG file extracted from VCD in Kaffeine. So I think its the problem with the new mounting system in SUSE and Fedora.(the one without the fstab entry)..till then use Mplayer. -- The Future is Open...The Future is LINUX

A few questions, few Off-topic, and few others related. 1. What differs in a OEM product and a boxed product? This is in terms of CD-RW / DVD-R/RW drives. I have heard, in OEM drives its core (circuitry) is supplied by the original company, whereas, the casing etc, are assembled by the other. Boxed product include all necessary manuals, software and the drive is manufactured entirely by the company. Can someone confirm this? 2. I have received Ubuntu CD's of 6.06 (Dapper Drake) and 1 CD of Kubuntu, and 1 CD of Edubuntu, I had ordered for. Has anybody tried Edubuntu? Has anyone created a LIVE CD for Edubuntu? 3. From one of the emails in the previous lists, I came across, http://www.gnu.org.in. I didn't know, this portal was up, because, I visited only the internal pages of http://www.gnu.org (Philosophy, why GNU/Linux, etc). Dear linuxers, The Mumbai Press Club is the latest to join the Linux bandwagon. The Club is providing a platform to demonstrate the benefits of Ubuntu Dapper to journalists in the city. Need volunteers to help break media persons into linux and other open source software like Scribus and GIMP the equivalents to Quark Express and Photoshop that are the main tools of the profession. linux firewall : query

Friends, I have one firewall with 4 NIC's , two are connected to ISP's (suppose ISP1 and ISP2) link and other two to 192.168.0.0 and 10.0.1.0 network and have in house mail server 192.168.1.8 running qmail. Current setup is like this: 192.168.0.0-->ISP1 10.0.0.0 --->ISP2 Now my problem is: When ISP1's link goes down i should be able to access mails using ISP2's link. For this to work i have configured two mx entries in my DNS server one IP from ISP1 and other from ISP2.and assigned these two IP's to firewall. i'm able to ping to these IP's from outside. Now when ISP1's link is down, i'm able to ping firewall with IP of other ISP2. but not able to access mails. 1. In this situation How should i configure the firewall to accesss mails in case of link failures. 2. SuSe 10.1 issues.

Hello All, I tried out suse 10.1 on my system. Installation was smooth and the variety of softwares was great. The video and sound was properly detected and network is working properly too. There are some issues though that have taken a full day of mine but no result still. This time I did not use the shortcut method of installing VLC for playing vcds. The win32 dll rpm was installed and xine 1.1.1 is already in my system. Still I am getting errors while opening vcds in kaffeine. The xine website shows no extra lib file to be installed and the Yast auto updater was one big PIA that only drained out my limitted triband Mbs. The packman site link taken from google does not open. There is also a minor issue about mounting CDs. There is no entry for cd drives in the fstab but the system shows up the cd in 'My Computer' of suse and creates a virtual mount point in the /media folder of the same name as the cd title. Even then the mount command does not show any optical drives. I am able to see files and folders in the cds. Are these 2 issues connected? Though I must add that a avseq01.dat file in my hdd still did not play in kaffeine. In the case of the cd drive if I select 'Open VCD' in the kaff. options, it throws an error 'could not locate drive' and asks for the path. When I give the path /dev/hdb, it closes and gives a bug report type error. The same directly happens if I select the .dat file directly on the hdd. Normally what do you guys do with xine just after a fresh OS installation? Can you give the steps? I even successfully installed xine-lib-1.1.1 from source using make install, only to realise that it was already installed as an rpm. So using make uninstall, it was removed. However before it was removed, I could play a vcd once but could not repeat the process. Any help on this will be appreciated. In a way, I agree with Kenneth about the disadvantages of convincing fellow journos abt the benefits of open source. Most still confuse high price with quality. But then the open source community is quite insular and has never really tried to reach out to the larger public. I hope I am able to make a small difference. Hopefully colleagues in the desk who work daily on Quark Express and Photoshop see the benefits of open source and convince cost-conscious managements to make a switch. Actually, since it is raining quite hard in any case, let me add my own dampening comments: the journos who show up are not going to be decision-makers on technology in their own outfits. If you can prepare some screenshots in advance, hand them out on CD so the journos will hopefully use them in their stories (ie, I hope this exercise results in stories). I work in Pune and come home to Mumbai on weekends..I wanted to check my account daytime balance and I entered my telephone no. as the user id as usual and correct password and it says Invalid User ID .. My connection is ON all bills cleared then what the heck is wrong. Also the same username/password is used on the ADSL router (PPPOE) to authenticate to the server and only then you can surf.so I guess there is a problem on their webserver. any1else with the same problem?? I know they have changed the timings for checking your account information @ register.mtnl.net.in.but I was checking when the service was available. Regards.

Free and open source software, open standards, best promote the scientific endeavor by mirroring its method, but also they assure that the work is accessible to the public. Freedom and openness are crucial to understanding, and foundational to the scientific endeavor, and they should not be compromised. There are a few examples of exceptions, but clearly, this matter will find further debate in the appropriate forums. We should not quell debate because a few people are offended or complaining. - From a scientific perspective that would be incorrect. On that last point, I would suggest that Apple get on the right side of the debate, and they will make tremendous headway. Now is the time. Some people will find this message annoying and divisive, and the delete button is ready at hand for them, but other people will find it interesting and engaging. All as you like. Let us not quell discussion because a few people are annoyed. Some will call this a troll, but I hope that folks will see through such name-calling. Trolls are mythological creatures, so don't believe in them. Everyone has a right to have their opinion heard, even if those opinions are divisive or unpopular. It is clear that the idea of trolls is being used to attack freedom of expression. In fact, freedom of expression demands that we listen to the so-called-trolls sometimes, and if you are civil, it helps, so don't resort to name-calling. Darwin (3) Here is the essence of the current problem with Darwin OS. Apple replaced working boot code with the following proprietary drivers, which are required for the system to boot. Darwin-7: AppleAPIC.kext/ Applei386genericplatform.kext/ Darwin-8: AppleACPIplatform In addition the kernel (xnu) has been taken proprietary in the recent revisions. We are not asking for Apple to give away such things, but rather to continue maintaining Darwin OS as FOSS, which it already was. After repeated attempts by many FOSS developers to get this situation remedied, nothing has happened. It is now time for us to better use the measures at our disposal in order to assure that Darwin OS remains free and open. If you are unhappy that xnu and the boot drivers have not been released, I would encourage you to spread your dissatisfaction to other forums, so that Apple will take notice and commit to a workable free and open Darwin OS from now on. Moving on to coalition strategy now, some of you may not know that GNU/Linux system administration is one of my day jobs. I manage a wide range of systems. Here is a screen-shot of my work desktop, so that you can see I use the same tools at work that I use at home at night on GNU-Darwin. There are only two exceptions to this statement, where I was helping Windows users to access our servers at Hopkins. Clearly, you can get a few things done without it ;-}. One of the primary reasons for founding GNU-Darwin was to help people to put Microsoft behind them, and it is definitely possible to do it now. You have many resources at your disposal to help you leave Microsoft behind. Look at the link below to see what you can do with free software. Apple, GNU-Darwin, GNU.org, and GNU/Linux will all help, and we are largely all helping together, because we have a shared foundation of free software. http://www.gnu-darwin.org/gdc/ Microsoft is only one example. That is why we are so insistent that Apple keep true to free and open source software principles. We should ultimately try to leave all proprietary software behind us, so that we can participate fully in the freedom and openness of the internet culture and public domain. What more do we need, when we have such a rich store of information and so many capable people at our sides? Finally, as a scientist, it is obvious to me that this situation is relevant current and ongoing discussion in the scientific community, and as such, it is also clear that many members of the various lists would be interested in the current state of Darwin with respect to FOSS and with respect to science.

Darwin (2) It is clear that scientific tools must be demonstrably and penetratingly understood, or else our claims will likely be skewed and called into question. Free and open source software is a great example of how to make your science verifiable to the public. Establishing prior art against future patents is another good one, which is precisely analogous in method, making the result explicit to the public, free and open to all. Thank goodness for the free and open software movement, which gave us such a great example of how to serve the public in this manner. I am willing to grant that there are particular exceptions to these rules of freedom and openness, and such exceptions may be relatively harmless; however, let us posit the opposite, that freedom and openness are _not_ crucial to understanding. Think of the implications. When people are compelled to learn, they do not receive the intended message. It is not understood correctly or completely. When crucial facts are withheld from the people you are trying to teach they become paranoid, possibly unteachable. Freedom and openness are obviously the best approach to understanding. This is not a metaphor for the pursuit of science, but a fact. We are learning from nature, and it is ultimately required that our tools be demonstrably and penetratingly understood, or else we will receive incorrect lessons from nature. Clearly this requires public access to the source code and more. This is why many of us are pressing for public access to scientific publications. Moreover FOSS tools are becoming ever more important to the pursuit of the scientific endeavor itself. In our biophysics department we are obsolescing proprietary hardware and software in favor of open standards and free software, which is a widespread phenomenon in the science sector, and sure to continue. We build most of the workstations ourselves with commodity hardware, but we also have some clusters running Debian and FedoraCore. Some of you will know that I am the lead developer for the GNU-Darwin distribution. GNU-Darwin has a FOSS operating system, which is getting alot of press these days. Here is an example How Apple and Microsoft are advancing desktop Linux http://www.desktopLinux.com/news/ns7294331817.html I see the article as counter-productive against building a FOSS coalition that includes democracy, freedom, and public access activists, Apple, GNU-Darwin, GNU, and GNU/Linux all linked together in spectrum. It is important to alert the whole FOSS community that Darwin cannot be classified as a free or open source operation system as of the Darwin-8 revision, because AppleACPIplatform-39 which is required to boot the system is proprietary. It is notable that only the current version of Darwin from Apple is a non-free OS. GNU-Darwin has a free version, an earlier revision that includes the source code. It is FOSS, and we call upon Apple to maintain Darwin as such, as it has been in the past. We hope that the current situation with the kernel and ACPI driver will soon be remedied so that Darwin will continue as a FOSS OS. We are asking for free software developers to please write to the *nix core of Darwin, which is the core OS for both Mac OS X and GNU-Darwin OS. Darwin OS, which underlies both systems, comprises parts from GNU, the BSD's, mach, plus Apple's substantial contributions to the free software community. Be consistent with your philosophy and avoid linkage to proprietary binaries, such as OpenGL and CoreAudio, except when it is imperatively required in order to lead users to the values of software freedom. Under that principle, another reason to maintain compatibility with the *nix core, is so that your code will be readily portable to new platforms and usable by free-software-only aficionados too. GNU-Darwin OS is not an obsolete implementation of Darwin OS, or to be superseded by Mac OS X. We are trying to lead users to freedom, not away from it. By maintaining Darwin core compatibility your code will remain valuable as the marketplace and industry continues to evolve (trust me here), particularly as DRM-related problems continue to come forward. Of course, that means releasing your source code under a FOSS license, such as APSL. Darwin OS is a free and open source operating system that is not going away, so try to focus your coding towards supporting that standard instead of proprietary software.

Thought some of you might enjoy reading this well presented argument from Darwin (it's a bit long, so I have divided it in four parts, each numbered at the top of the post). Darwin (1) The values of freedom and openness are crucial to understanding itself, so that civilization and public welfare now depend on them, as I argue below. These values may find their best expression in the free and open source software (FOSS) movement, and the foresightful example of FOSS developers should now be beneficially applied to many other disciplines in the context of a global and public Internet. It is crucial that we occasionally take time to discuss the reasons _why_ we release our source code, and this is one of those occasions. There are good reasons for the freedom and openness which are characteristics of FOSS development, reasons which should receive wider attention now that they can be readily communicated to other arenas. The consequences of doing otherwise are often catastrophic. For example, it incomprehensible that Genentech could consider withdrawing a cheap cure for blindness (ARMD) from the market. http://lists.essential.org/pipermail/random-bits/2006-june/001374.html The mechanism of this drug is public knowledge. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=14183567&forum_id=60… This abhorrent situation is a great example of the kind of thing that will happen if people don't get behind the values of freedom and openness that we are espousing. Please let Genentech know that you find what they are doing offensive. Publicize the mechanism so that new compounds can be obtained as replacements. For the future, continued vociferous public activism is required to prevent such outrages from occurring in the future. It becomes clear that the compounds which come from common roots, fruits, and vegetables are a shared human heritage and the free and open source of the future. Tannins are another interesting case in point, because as molecules, and as anti-oxidents, they are similar to resveratrol (resV), and that molecular mechanism has been anchored to the public domain via a prior art declaration. It is a so-called CR-memetic, which may increase healthy human longevity by many decades. Here are some links about it. I personally am trying to get off the cholesterol drug Pravachol, a statin compound, starting a few of weeks ago. Write me, and I'll let you know how it turns out. From the article... "Fontana says ... evidence of "younger" hearts in people on calorie restriction, suggest that humans on CR have the same adaptive responses as did animals whose rates of aging were slowed by CR." I think that it is time to look at the tannins in tobacco leaves. There may be other treasures lurking there too. As you may be aware there is ample public research into any possible beneficial compounds that may be obtained from tobacco leaves. The mechanisms are there waiting to be discovered. If you want to post them, just reply to me and I'd be delighted to host them. The public establishment of prior art is a time-honed method of entering inventions into the public domain. We now have other methods at our disposal as well. If you are planning to establish prior art against future CR-memetic related patents, you might want to have a look at www.creativecommons.org. Perhaps it goes without saying at this point that you should please choose a license that provides for free and broad public access to your memetic. In that way you will assure that the public health is served by anchoring them to the public common, where they cannot be exploited by those who would withhold them for their own profit. The DRM situation is precisely analogous to this. Can you imagine doing science in a world where your ability to read and write your data is filtered through secret protocols that are hidden from you? I recommend the Defective By Design campaign to fight the outrage of DRM, which is incompatible with the scientific pursuit. http://www.defectivebydesign.org/

Lessig needs no introduction: a very well-reasoned and productive argument. The following was posted by Lawrence Lessig on June 21, 2006. http://www.lessig.org/blog/ Just got off the plane to Rio where we're holding the second iCommons iSummit, so this is a bit delayed. But today, Microsoft has released a free Office plug-in that enables you to mark Office documents (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) with Creative Commons licenses. This has been in the works for a while, and is an extremely cool development. The plug-in will modify the FILE menu, adding an item "Creative Commons" and then when selected, link the user out to the CC site to select a license to be inserted into the license. The first document licensed with the tool is a speech by Brazil's Culture Minister and supercool musician, Gilberto Gil, about tropicalism. (en) (pt). Before I got on the plane yesterday, I was on some press calls about the announcement. Many were surprised CC and Microsoft would work together. Ever the naive law professor, that surprise surprises me. Office is a tool for creating. Giving the creator more control over that creativity is a way to make the Office platform more valuable to creators. And by incorporating CC licenses, more valuable to the public. "But isn't it strange for MSFT and Lessig to team-up?" I was asked. Well, I have yet gotten the team jersey, but no, it isn't. Microsoft has been on the right side of a number of important issues spectrum, net neutrality, identity and I'm very glad they're on the right side of this issue too. Giving creators the tools to mark their creativity with the freedoms they intend it to carry is a fantastically good thing to do. "But it's just for the Windows platform, isn't it?" True enough. Now we need some enterprising sort to make a plug-in for Office on the Mac, as well as Garageband, OpenOffice, and many others. Let the competition begin.
