Hello all developers out there, I have released version 0.2 of ColourCode. ColourCode is a small ruby application to generate syntax highlighted HTML files from a source file. It is released under the GNU GPLv2 Currently it supports Javascript, Java, C++, C#, Python, Ruby and Shellscript(bash). I would appreciate it if some of you could take a look at it. Errors while Installing the Glibc-2.4.6

I'm building and installing the Glibc-2.4.6 library and getting the following errors when I install: Entering state 2 Reading a token: Now at end of input. Reducing stack by rule 2 (line 345), extdefs -> program Stack now 0 Entering state 1 Now at end of input. /tools/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.0.3/../../../../i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: : No such file: No such file or directory collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Execution of gcc failed! The script has found some problems with your installation! Please read the FAQ and the README file and check the following: - Did you change the gcc specs file (necessary after upgrading from Linux libc5)? - Are there any symbolic links of the form libXXX.so to old libraries? Links like libm.so -> libm.so.5 (where libm.so.5 is an old library) are wrong, libm.so should point to the newly installed glibc file - and there should be only one such link (check e.g. /lib and /usr/lib) You should restart this script from your build directory after you've fixed all problems! Btw. the script doesn't work if you're installing GNU libc not as your primary library! make[1]: *** [install] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/tools/glibc-2.3.6' make: *** [install] Error 2 root:/tools/glibc-2.3.6-build# I check everything listed above maybe I missed something. Edubuntu 6.06 LTS on Acer 2428 Report.

Hello All, The knowledge.org DVD that was released today has an Edubuntu 6.06 LTS iso in it. Just to try it out I burned it into a CD. It loaded smoothly in the pc for a live session. Then it was tried on the Acer 2428 laptop too and not only was the live session good but it installed smoothly into the HDD too. What I remember is that during a demo camp for linux, Ubuntu 6.06 as well as 6.10 threw up problems with Acer 2428 laptops. On mine too Ubuntu 6.10 would hang. Those lappys had to be loaded with Kubuntu 6.06. However Edubuntu 6.06 does not seem to have any issues with Acer 2428 and it uses the gnome desktop just like Ubuntu (which does not work on it). Another advantage of edubuntu over ubuntu is that its gnome comes loaded with graphics softwares like Scribus, Paint, Video Editor, Draw etc. So its more than just a distro for kids. Its for the aunties and uncles. However I could not play VCDs. Anyway I am used to it now. Wireless support for gnome is in-built so unlike kde, there is no separate wireless manager. Its handled by the 'Networking' utility in the 'Administration' menu under 'System'. Once your WAP is up, simply use the networking utility and under the blank list of available networks, a click on the drop down list will reveal your WAP's name below. That's what I heard in the background when my sister called me this evening. I got her to pick up the pamplet and found that a company named Vinsoft Technologies was doing this. It's providing packages of computers+AMC+training. Also, apparently there's some big poster on Churchgate station on Linux as well. I didn't get a chance to see that though. Debian trends and future distros.

Hello Everyone, Here are some news tips and updates for Debian and its alied distros. During April 07, Ubuntu will come out with a multi-media centric distro called UbuntuStudio http://ubuntustudio.org/ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuStudio There is also another media centric Ubuntu called Ubuntu Multimedia Center http://ubuntummc.com/ During that time the new Ubuntu versions 7.04 will be released too. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter/Issue28 Debian 4 which is still under 'Testing' and will be finally called Etch http://www.us.debian.org/releases/testing/ can be downloaded for trial using a small netinstall iso http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ from http://www.us.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ The netinstall iso is the base system only. But saves download of heavy dvds for testing. There are CD isos too but I don't know which iso contains what packages. I downloaded the netinstall iso which was 130 MB and used 'installgui' at boot prompt to use and study its GUI installer. Its really great and very good for non-experts to try out Debian. It works smoothly just like Fedora's Anaconda. Its kernel is 2.6.17. During installation, the Desktop option was selected during package selection and it download 540 MB of Gnome desktop. My 400 MB triband account is screaming and hysterical at the heavy downloads this month. :P Gnome in Etch RC1 is 2.15. In Ubuntu 6.10 it is 2.16. After install, the updates prompter in Etch states that kernel 2.6.18 image is available. So thats a plus point for Debian Etch. Gnome in Etch is a bit buggy. Its printer tool allows you to select and choose printers but at the final 'Apply' button, the entire process vanishes into thin air. You are back to square 1. The best way to setup printers in _any_ linux distro is to ensure that CUPS is running and use a web browser and type localhost:631 in the address bar. 631 is the CUPS port for printing. If you have enabled network administration ( see docs on the CUPS website) you can access your printer from across different machines by typing Your_Printer_PC_IP_Address:631 If you are a command line fan or X is not loaded then use the lynx text browser to do the same in command line. 'lynx localhost:631' You can change printer settings too, like page size, resolution etc. Another bug with gnome is that its automatic NetworkManager applet initially detects the connection established but after a reboot or two, it does not even detect the network device. All this while network is actually working and giving internet access. But Gnome in etch packs in some more packages and utilities compared to Ubuntu 6.10. It has a separate CD burning utility ( cannot recall its name) just like K3B in KDE. The default in-built burning utility still exists. The best option then would be to use both Gnome and KDE in Debian Etch and for that request someone who has its DVD to make a copy for you. ;) Regards, Rony. ___________________________________________________________ The all-new Yahoo! Gnome under KDM possible?

If you install kde over gnome does it overwrite gdm? i mean does gnome work under kdm? I went through a few links under google but none could give me an answer! Or do the display managers work exclusively as in Gnome by default uses gdm whenever you log into gnome and kde uses kdm whenever i log into KDE? Sachin G. Nambiar

problems with installing ubuntu on an intel ggc based machine Please help.

hello. I had the shock of my life today. I had previously mentioned about a server installation I have to do. I don't find it will be any problem after the feedback I got about fedora. however there is another case which is really very interesting. I am trying to install gnu/linux on a machine with a seluron 2.8 processor and an intel ggc 2 motherboard with ati radeon display (the board is the latest intel mobo) if the case was a very streight forward case I would never have a problem in changing the distro. but I got the following interesting results. 1. ubuntu 6.06.1 (dapper) booted nicely with every device driver but display resolution was very bad probably 640 by 480. 2. ubuntu 6.10 was even more interesting. it did not boot at all on a machine with the same ggc 2 mother board with a seluron processor but booted very well on the same mobo with intel p4 3ghz processor. 3. fedora core 5 did not show up the graphical installer but I managed to install it without any desktop like gnome or kde. so the best part was on all computers ubuntu 6.06 aka 6.06.1 booted without proper display. and ubuntu 6.10 did not boot on the same ggc motherboard with seluron 2.8 processor and booted perfectly well with the same mobo with a p4 3 ghz processor. another small thing although it might not mean any thing. on the seluron and ggc mobo combination 256 mb ddr2 ram is available and on the p4 with ggc mobo 512 ddr2 ram. what shockes me time and again is that how 6.06 boots on every machine being older and 6.10 is so inconsistent. secondly 6.10 not just booted but gave perfect display (umm well at least 800 by 600) on a ggc with p4 and did not boot at all on other seluron machine with same mobo? Please sort out this problem and suggest the perfect distro. Krishnakant.

gnu/linux compatible interactive applications for children

Hi, I am running ubuntu dapper drake and works well for my needs. However now the time has come to introduce some interactive applications for toddlers. Its a long shot but are there any such media companies or specific applications that will run on my system? Examples of such CD/DVDs can be: 1) Learning alphabets and numbers 2) Nursery Rhymes 3) Click n paint and so on. I do have wine installed where i run IE6 and other exe applications. In parallel i will try and install some of those apps and see if it works, but in the meantime if anyone can supply me with some known-to-work names or feedback, I'll appreciate it. "Since we have a new core in this review, I decided it was prudent to pull out both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Linux. We wanted to find out where Core 2 shows the most performance and how it did versus AMD in each mode. The table below shows the compile options for each OS and processor type. I didn't go all out and be over-aggressive here. It was important to compile the applications for each specific processor type but not be too aggressive and cause instability." What compilation has he done? Is he actually compiling the kernel or packages or does he give the specific commands at boot prompt? Could someone briefly explain the process? File Deletion

hi, I want to delete files older than a particular date or older than a particular no of days. the command i used for this is on a usual linux machine was- find /dir -type f -mtime +7 | xargs rm -f ( also i used a combination of "touch" and "find" which too worked fine) now my problem is i have to perform the same task only in C (without using shell script ) as the device for which i m writing this module has its own small linux kernel and hence doesnt support many commnads like "find" , "more" ,"mv" etc .......... i am aware of the remove() function in C but how do i get the date a file was last modified and then delete it ??? Lack of IDE suooprt on 965 mobo.

Hello All, Yesterday when I was searching for core2 info on the net, I came across complaints that the Intel 965 board PATa (parallel IDE port) is not detected by the Linux distros and the alternative is to use a SATA CD ROM or usb install. Even Dinesh J. had mentioned it. My query is that why does a distro need to understand or talk to the IDE or PATA port controller chips when the port itself is a universal port with pins dedicated to power, read, write, address and data? Shouldn't the BIOS be the interface that takes communication _internally_ between the port and its controller chip? Another point is that why is the old XP SP2 2002 edition able to talk to the _new_ PATA controllers on 965 while the new linux distros cannot? Is there a windows specific command structure secretly available between M$ and the BIOS manufacturers? Hi, You want to install GNU/Linux, but don't have a cdrom/floppy/bootable usb drive? (I faced this challenge some time back and this document helped me http://marc.herbert.free.fr/linux/win2linstall.html ). It is easier now. You can install Debian GNU/Linux if you have a working internet connection and you are running a Microsoft Windows Operating system. hello all. one of my clients is confused about the differences or rather the non-differences (as usual with most of the semi experienced gnu/linux users ) wants me to setup a server but is only confident about a distro named fedora. they have been using fedora for quite some time on a dual boot machine. but if at all I were to setup a server, will fedora suit the server requirements? there will be only gnome installed and that too wont run by default because I am going to set the machine to init level 3. we are supposed to run a ftp server which will mostly be proftpd and also apache server with php support. mysql5 will also be installed on the server. so since the customer wants fedora I wont be ready to start a distro flame war as long as fedora can handle the needs of a secured stable server. the setup is in narel which is away from mumbai so I can't go there very often hence I need a stable server. regards. The Linux Brochure

Hello All, The beginner's Linux brochure is finally complete and exported from Scribus to pdf format. I would like to know where I can post these files for anyone and everyone to use at their own free will, as well as give feedback on any mistakes. The page format finally selected was 2 A4 pages in landscape format and folded into half to give a total of 8 half size pages, like a booklet. The pages will be bound together at the folds. The A4 size will make it convenient for printing on home colour printers too. The pages are meant to be transparent so I am planning to use coloured paper for final printing as it saves a lot on background printing. The penguin picture in it is hand drawn by looking at a ready picture. The original tux was naked so I gave it a suit and bow tie. Hi, Digressing from the topic,I would like to ask as to the difference between Core2Duo processor with corresponding motherboard and PentiumD 2.80 Ghz Dual Core processor with Intel D101GGC motherboard in terms of computing power and speed?Like, I asked the reseller for a core2 duo but he got confused and gave me the above processor.I am in a dilemma whether I should ask him to exchange because one of my friends told me there's hardly any difference.Isthat true?What's your opinion? Fedora Core 6, Core 2 Duo with DG965RYCK motherboard

Hi, Today I installed Fedora Core 6 ( Respin ) on my Core 2 Duo system. The system's specs are: - Core 2 Duo E6400 Processor - DG965RYCK mobo - 512MB DDR2 @ 533MHz ( It should've been 1024MB but the other sticks not working ) - 80GB Seagate HDD No add on cards at all. Initial impressions: The system boots up really fast. The board is quite new so requires a bit of tweaking and playing around. The default FC6 kernel doesnt support the onboard PATA controller ( JMicron ). The problem: Since the kernel doesn't have the driver built in for the JMicron chip, the kernel boots from the CD but it doesn't find the installation media and asks for a driver disk or alternative installation methods. Solution: There are two solutions to this problem: - You can use a SATA or USB CD/DVD drive instead of a PATA - You can pass the following kernel parameters to get it going: pci=nommconfig irqpoll all-generic-ide For the first option to work correctly you should be installing on a SATA HDD. You also need to change some BIOS settings: Advanced -> Drive Settings -> SATA -> AHCI ( by default its IDE ) This should get the installer started normally. Install process: FC6 has a very intuitive installer. I selected several packages according to my needs: - GNOME - KDE - Development tools / libraries etc.. etc.. The complete install size was around 3.1GB. The system took about 15 mins flat to install everything and it was up. But one word of caution, Fedora Core's installer, Anaconda, will add only pci=nommconfig kernel option in grub.conf. You need to manually edit it and add all three options ( see above ) to get your system booting properly. After thoughts: You can try playing around with the options to suit your need. My installation was done on a PATA drive. If you have a SATA drive then it will be much easier since the kernel already has the driver for the SATA controller hence it wont complain plus it will boot up without the all-generic-ide option. If your install is on a SATA drive and you dont see your PATA CD/DVD/RW/ROM them you need to pass the all-generic-ide option. The drives will show up properly. One more problem that was evident after the install was random lockups with the default kernel. FC6 ( respin ) shipped with the 2.6.18 kernel. I simply upgraded it to the latest, 2.6.19 i believe, and the random lock ups went away. Even in this kernel I had to pass all three options for the system to work normally. For some, removing the irqpoll option may work. For me it didnt work. Xorg would come up but for some reason it kept on restarting. I had to reboot the system and manually add the irqpoll option after which the system was stable. I used the respin with the hopes that the updated installer kernel would not need any tweaking to get it started the steps remain the same for the official Fedora Core 6 release. The user experience on this is amazing. I used GNOME ( yes, I was a BIG KDE fan a while ago but now I am not ) with Compiz enabled ( System -> Preferences -> Desktop Effects -> Enable ). It rocks! I then installed beryl ( yum install beryl-gnome ) and its even slicker than compiz. For intel users its no problem but those with NVidia or ATI will need to get their proprietary drivers installed and configured first. It worked out of the box for me. Some stats: - GNOME with Beryl enabled with the system working as a http, ftp, mysql, etc.. etc.. server it consumed about 250MBs of RAM. - Install takes around 15 minutes to complete ( All 5 CDs required ) - Boot up hardly takes 15 seconds - System shows a bogomips of approximately 8400 ( both processors combined ) Hope this helps someone out there who is struggling to get Fedora Core installed on his/her Core 2 Duo system :P -- Regards, Dinesh A. Data recovery on a crashed drive with Linux FS

Hi peeps, My Samsung SP1213C ( 120GB ) SATA disk has crashed. Its making horrible clicking sounds. The disk is not reading much. Though GRUB does come up and the kernel does start booting up but it finally panics after not being able to find initrd ( Yes, I use Fedora Core 2 :P ). I had some important family pictures and stuff in there. I tried booting to Windows and using the EXT2FS reader but its of no use. It cant read anything. It gives a bunch of read errors. I spoke to my vendor and he said that none of the recovery guys he knows can recover a disk with a Linux FS. Also, if I give it to some third party who opens up the drive, my drives warranty will be void. Samsung is of no help. They're pathetic :( I mean they'll just replace the drive. They wont take any responsibility for the data! But I guess thats normal, right? I'm not sure what I should do at this point. Can anybody help out?? Any suggestions??? -- Regards, Dinesh A. Joshi

The full text of the 287 page report, entitled "Economic impact of open source software on innovation and the competitiveness of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector in the EU," is available online (PDF). The report provides the most thorough and comprehensive look at the contributions of the FLOSS community that I've ever seen. While most of the statics and numbers are geared toward the EU and European nations in general (the lead contractor of the study was UNU-MERIT from the Netherlands), the study nevertheless provides a fascinating look at free software and its impact on the world at large. Particularly stunning is the estimated time to reproduce this software in proprietary format (131,000 person years) and the estimated amount of donated programming effort in monetary terms (800 million Euros per year). Here's some more highlights pulled straight from the text (emphasis mine): * Almost two-thirds of FLOSS software is still written by individuals; firms contribute about 15% and other institutions another 20%. * Europe is the leading region in terms of globally collaborating FLOSS software developers, and leads in terms of global project leaders, followed closely by North America (interestingly, more in the East Coast than the West). Asia and Latin America. * The existing base of quality FLOSS applications with reasonable quality control and distribution would cost firms almost Euro 12 billion to reproduce internally. This code base has been doubling every 18-24 months over the past eight years, and this growth is projected to continue for several more years. * This existing base of FLOSS software represents a lower bound of about 131 000 real person-years of effort that has been devoted exclusively by programmers. As this is mostly by individuals not directly paid for development, it represents a significant gap in national accounts of productivity. Annualised and adjusted for growth this represents at least Euro 800 million in voluntary contribution from programmers alone each year, of which nearly half are based in Europe. * Firms have invested an estimated Euro 1.2 billion in developing FLOSS software that is made freely available. Such firms represent in total at least 565 000 jobs and Euro 263 billion in annual revenue. India moves to launch Creative Commons at Mumbai function in coming week FN Premier technological institute IIT Bombay is to launch the Indian chapter of Creative Commons during its annual Technology Festival of India, shortly. The Creative Commons (CC) is a global non-profit working to expand the range of creative work available for others "legally to build upon and share." It allows people to issue creative works under a license that allows more flexibility than the default "all rights reserved" of copyright law. >From its modest cyberhome at cc-india.org, the Indian branch of the global movement is spreading the ideas that there are options to copyright, when it comes to building creativity and sharing knowledge widely. Creative Commons enables copyright holders to grant some or all of their rights to the public, while retaining others, through a variety of licensing and contract schemes. The intention is to avoid the problems current copyright laws create for the sharing of information. In a world where digital-content rules, sharing of knowledge and creative products has become far easier. Some globally successful volunteer projects -- like the Wikipedia, among the top 20 most visited sites -- have scaled up phenomenally by basing themselves on parallel easier-to-share licenses. Creative Commons-India project lead Shishir K. Jha, assistant professor at the IIT's Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, said that the project planned to focus on three specific areas in India. These are, centres of higher education like the seven IITs, regional IITs, managements and other institutions. He said: "These are increasingly taking recourse to creating video and web-based courses such as the NPTEL (National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning) and distance education courses such as C-DEEP (www.cdeep.iitb.ac.in) and eGURU (ekalavya.it.iitb.ac.in/eguruHome.do) (and all would benefit from keeping content sharable)." is there any customer of pacenet from goregaon on this list there are heavy problems faced in this area from pacenet for the last 15 days & mr saiyad from pacenet says that 7 days have been credited to every user as compensation while TRAI regulations say that "Faults Pending for > 7 working days and < 15 working days: rebate equivalent to 15 days of minimum monthly charge or equivalent usage allowance" well the customers dont get perfect speeds the network is congested while DNS pings are normally above 130 ms on 64 bytes. I have a 72kbps line the speeds are mostly below 56.2 kbps on an average not more than 64 kbps

[OT] Root partition mouting read-only frequently

My partitioning is as follows: /dev/hda1 / /dev/hda5 /home /dev/hda6 swap /dev/hda7 /data All are ext3. The / partition is mounting read-only very frequently, in spite of clean shutdowns. As a result, the only apps I can use are Firefox and Thunderbird. Anything else (even those two if have to download something) requiring access to / (specially /tmp) doesn't work. For e.g., running "man" on any command gives "man: can't create a temporary filename: Read-only file system". Seek advice to quit Windows

Hi, Let me first introduce myself. I have been a silent observer of this list for the past 1-2 years. Though I havent contributed anything to this list, I very much like the concept of Linux and Free Software. Unfortunately, for me I learnt about this long after I went for the microsoft certification which helped me to get a job. I work as a windows system admin (3 years) for living. After observing and readin a lot in this community and a little bit of personal experience with linux I wish to move into linux administration and personally I hate microsoft's way of working. To work in windows I need to keep myself trained in windows and for that i have to use windows. That goes into a vicious circle. I find myself locked I am sure I would be considered as a newbie (I am one) in the linux world and I see jobs are mostly for the experienced in the linux administration. What should I do to make the switch? I need your suggestions. I wish to quit windows..now -- True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing. Opensource for a Small Manufacturing unit

Hi, Am going to work in a small manufacturing unit with a T.O. of around 9cr. Currently they do have a few desktops(un-networked) with pirated copies(based on discussions i doubt they know the difference and i want to change that) of Windows XP installed. By their roadmap and current projects in hand they see a very easy jump into a sub 20cr and perhaps more, category. I propose to install opensource software in this company, mostly to avoid licensing issues as soon as they are spotted on MS's radar as they grow larger. It's business not ideology. Requirements: Tally software Autocad/Studioworks or any other as good opensource/linux variant. Spreadsheet Email etc These are the basic requirements and currently they dont even have a website mostly because their business is not web centric or even remotely close to it. I know there are other engineering based software variants to autocad out there, but are they as good? and what about Tally. As far as i know they can definitely afford a licensed version of engineering/accounting software. But they really need to avoid software costs in the future. People i assume are not very software oriented apart from basic usage. Please note that software has to be scalable as the business is going to grow! So i would also need some miniature BI tool(even if it's just a spread sheet in it's simplest form) if possible in the future. Recommend a Linux distro

Hi list, A friend of mine is a network admin. Recently, I had a talk with him and convinced him to use GNU/Linux to control the internet access to all the client PCs in his organization. His requirements are pretty simple and can be satisfied by using Squid. But the problem is that his knowledge of GNU/Linux is nill, zero! Now I would really like to know if there is some distro that can meet his requirements ( Proxy, NAT, DNS Cache, Firewall easy to setup and web based administration of the server ). You know something that would need him to only pop in the CD on a fresh machine - install automatically without creating too much fuss about partitioning scheme, the packages that he wants etc.. etc.. and would give him a simple web based interface ( something like we have on cheap routers or similar to webmin ). Sqlite3 linking problem

Hi all, I have used sqlite3 database engine for my C appln . my C program (first.c )simply opens database , creates tables and closes database. I have confirmed the presence of sqlite3 librarries on my system at /usr/lib/ my compliation option is : gcc first.c -lsqlite3 and then i get a compln error as path to sqlite3 lib - could not read symbols :Invalid operation ld returned with exit status 1 Can any one help me to sort out this ? it will b of great help to me ......... I have opened the iptables for ssh port 22, on the linux box but still cannot get to thru from outside. I have connected the router in bridge mode. If he feels it good in doing his job, a. he suggests the same to his friends. But, his friends also wish to test is themselves so he needs to *distribute*. b. he thinks he can help you in improving the software still better, so he contributes 3. He find some bugs in the software and if he is skilled, gets you some patches so your software becomes less buggy. Hence, when he shares/distributes the software with his friends, more eyes are looking into the software and hence more bugs get *solved* and your software improves. 4. So, its not the only user you gave your software to, but its 10 and 100s of others who voluntarily involve themselves in improving *your* software, just because they like it and think it is useful than others. You need not spend *millions* in this manner to make your software reach high quality, feature richness or get a huge user base. And, a developer who has the skill to create software, and if he is indeed really interested in helping the community with good quality software, will indeed follow the FOSS philosophy we all stand for and not the one which you have misunderstood. Hello All, Many a times my clients as well as I face problems with sending small software files as attachments by email because the spam filters of various email providers block even genuine messages. Emailing has become very unreliable to send important messages. Many a times even genuine text mails are rejected by servers. There have been attempts by some email providers to use a paid stamp like system for emails so that those emails are not rejected by other providers. however this is a private effort and prices may vary from different email providers. Rivalry between providers could also result in problems of access. The postal department of any country is the Govt. flagship and is never private. Postal agreements are between governments of nations. So can we have a similar agreement on email stamps (digital signatures) by postal depts. of every nation where a national online account is created for users within that country and this account is refilled locally just like the mobile pre-paid refills. As a statutory requirement, all email providers must recognize and accept mails that carry these Postal Estamps and deliver the messages directly to the inbox of the recipient. Offline email clients like Thunderbird can carry an option to 'add estamp'. The estamp account holder simply clicks a button which uses a user_name and password to fetch a stamp and attach it to the mail. The mail will be sent only after the stamp is fetched so its headers will not contain any information of the estamp login/passwd. The cost of estamps will be definitely lower than normal postage and that may also encourage more senders to get net savvy. All stamps will be of the same value, say 5paise to 25paise per stamp. The high volume of genuine mail traffic will provide a huge revenue for the Postal Dept. The spam guards can continue to filter mails like they did before except for *any* mails from *any* server that carries an estamp. This will also help recognize many small local mail servers that directly send mail and are otherwise rejected by other servers. We can setup our own mail servers that will be recognized by all. I require to install Sun Java on Edubuntu Server offline The problem is that I don't have Internet on the Linux Machine and so need to download the Sun Java for the Linux version and get the things and also need Postgresql and MySQL as the database for the same. I had gone to the java.sun.com and they have Java for Linux in form of Self Extracting format. I had also seen http://packages.ubuntu.com/edgy/libs/sun-java5-jre In that page I find that I should download http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/s/sun-java5/sun-java5_1.5.… which is about 88 MB which is too large for download as the Sun's site has only about 16 MB. I require the database also Postgresql and MySQL Can anyone give me appropriate pointers to me to install me in a ubuntu machine Can anyone help me Thanks in advance CSJakharia P.S. Hello, Everyone was over the moon when Sun accounced Java would be going GPL. We heard a lot of stuff from corporates, FSF, etc... but i didn't see much of a visible reaction from Sun's core development team, namely James Gosling. i just came across this, it seems a lot of developers wanted all of Java to be free as in freedom from day 1 and were pretty annoyed that it would not be so. Thus i did some searching and i found this quote from Gosling himself : ``I'm really happy we're finally getting it done (the only thing I'm unhappy about is how many complexities there are to take care of - don't worry, we'll get it done). No, I'm not job hunting: Sun is fun again! Why not a social networking site?..

Hi friends, When i first learnt about how open source development took place, i found that development model more amazing and wonderful. Opensource projects collaborated using Mailing lists, Forums, Wiki, IRCs, Version control and more.. All thru the web without any physical contact. And the important concept i consider behind an open source development is not the code that comes out.. Its the integraty and social equity between the people. (but not the intention of open source however). In todays world, many open source projects go dead because of many reasons. The main reason may be because of less collaboration or developers fail to hand over to the upcoming interested peoples. Why open source projects fail at collaboration and syncronization in the evolving Internet 2.0 web?.. I consider the main problem is in the collaboration mechanism used. Current way of collaboration within open source projects is good. But it should be made better. The hottest buzz word in the internet world is Web 2.0. In that the most talked is the community based sites. Nowadays, in news i can see many social networking sites created for specific purpose. For music sharing, news sharing, photos sharing, technology sharing, etc. Why not a social networking site specific to open source code sharing and for open source people connections?.. I searched thru internet to get one good social networking site to integrate with the open source developers world wide. But i failed. Is there a social networking site exist particularly for open source developers ??? .. It would be fun if such a social networking site is there.. ;) The first problem a programmer gets while entering into open source world is the collaboration. They get help through the LUGs however. But, what about the collaboration in a global perspective ? If there is no such social networking site (for sharing interests, code, features needed etc) for the open source world at present, why not a social networking site be created?.. (is there any plans of such like?) Dont make this a flame war please :).. If you find some ignorant quotes somewhere, please correct me.. Waiting for ur hot suggestions.. Hi, I have a Linux server working very well. It consists of a lot of software like qmail and stuff which I downloaded and compiled. And also a lot of configurations, users etc. during reinstall if I just use the distro ( CentOS in this case) I would spend a lot of time again to get the server in the same working order. I would like to sort of image it so I can reinstall it painlessly if it crashes. Or I can install it on some other server so as to replicate the setup. What are the best ways to do this? C programming - Processes, Threads, Plugins

Hi List, New Year greetings to all! I am working on a small project and want to learn about implementing simple plugins in C. I have already done some research on plugins. They are generally implemented using dynamic libraries ( dlfcn.h? ). My project involves taking a simple user command and process it using different algorithms ( based on user's choice ). Each algorithm is implemented as a plugin. The program should launch the plugin in a separate process/thread and wait until it completes the processing. The advantage of this model is that, if required, the program can use several algorithms simultaneously to process the same command. So I need to learn how to program: 1. Processes 2. Threads 3. Plugins I know one comprehensive resource is not available to learn all of the above. Any inputs are appreciated. I like to learn by example. If anyone has links / e-books / tutorials which teaches the above using examples then please post them here. Also, I am a bit confused about how exactly plugins are implemented. In my case, all algorithms perform the same task but internally the processing differs. So do i implement a common API which my main program ( can I call it a server? ) will use to communicate with that plugin? Once the API standardized, can people simply add new algorithms by implementing the same API? One more dilemma I face is whether to use processes or threads? With the newer multicore ( and the older HT ) architecture processors, what would be better to use? Processes or Threads? Ofcourse it goes without saying I'm using Linux, gcc :P P.S.: Anybody know a good resource for debugging using gcc, gdb? -- Regards, Dinesh A. Joshi

when i bought my acer laptop from Kolkata the price of my laptop was reduced as I refused to get windows preloaded and it came only with a hardly working version of linpus linux on it... It seems Acer recommends Windows but then they dont have issues if we refuse it.... They gave me a driver cd for Windows though and had none for Linux which was part of their recommendation agenda :-D Though I had probs initially with drivers but ultimately I found all the drivers on Dapper and perusing the Acer developers a bit and thts been awesome............. D-Link GLB-502T slowing down Ubuntu Edgy?

I had plugged in the GLB-502T to check out its web interface (haven't got my ADSL connection activated yet :-( )and I found my system becoming *lazy*. In the sense that applications were taking a longer time than usual to start up. The system indicator applets show no activity - CPU, memory, disk or swap - no blinking HDD LED - but there is a noticeably large lag between clicking an application and it being ready to use. So much so that it took almost 5 minutes for my desktop to load after login. Removing the router and plugging in the cablenet LAN brought things to normal. Another thing there seems to be a lot of bad karma associated with GLB-502T. <http://www.webservertalk.com/archive236-2006-9-1667246.html> Plus there's a bunch of posts on <www.broadbandforum.in> (it isn't working as of 11:20 AM today) that I came upon stating some problems to do with its WAN MAC address. For those into enterprise backups, here is some news.. Bacula 2.0.0 was recently released with tonnes of major features, improved maturity and performance. For those who are not aware, bacula (www.bacula.org) is a network based backup and recovery program (under the GPL license). From my experience it is comparable to Legato Networker (which i use) and Veritas Netbackup and is probably better since the storage and indexing formats are non-proprietary.. The brochure at http://db.glug-bom.org/wiki/index.php/Linux_Brochure says: "Fedora Core is an RPM based Linux distribution, developed by the community-supported Fedora Project and sponsored by Red Hat. Its goal is to be a complete, general-purpose operating system that contains only free and open source software. It also considered to be the testing ground for future versions of Redhat Enterprise Linux." According to a Fedora Project member in December's issue of LFY, Fedora Core is the upstream of RHEL and many of the other Fedora 'based' distributions like Scientific Linux, etc.. Hi, Can someone with compiz/beryl make a cool looking screenshot in the cube mode? I'm trying to make a front page design for the brochure. The requirements are as follows: * XMMS/Beep Media or some other media player * A movie in progress, preferably a bollywood movie * Firefox open with a Linux or GNU site; anything that has the right words and the Tux logo * A nautilus/konqueror window with some pictures (in preview mode) * There should be no terminal program running * The shot should be high res, preferably in dark colors but clear looking at the same time. I have been searching for a screenshot on the net but sadly most either have a terminal running, or 'microsoft ipod' searches. A Linux Brochure Re-visited

First of all, great job Rony :-) Its not easy trying to say so much in so few, you certainly have done it. Kudo's to you. However, there are a couple of things i did some checking on that we could deliberate upon: 0)In the paragraph ``Why Free and Open Source Software" the word Freedom and the ethical reasons for why they should be used are very much absent. Not to mention the dangers of using proprietary software besides viruses, security problems, and data loss problems. It is later mentioned that ``Linux is not just software, it is a movement that was started to empower the people, to empower YOU with full freedom to create, distribute and use software without getting locked out until you paid for an 'upgrade' of your commercial software.". The Linux kernel was NEVER started as a movement, it was started as a student project. The only movement which started this is the Free Software movement, from which the Open Source movement offshooted. It was only later that Linus joined up with the Open Source movement. Linus has also admitted that he would never have bothered to make the Linux kernel mainstream if GNU had finished their kernel.This is very much a historical fact. i have have to really thank you Rony for this, as now it makes perfect sense why we just cannot refer to the operating system as Linux even for simplicity. 1)The word Freedom is mentioned in the ``Is Linux widely used?" paragraph right at the end, that too with an entire paragraph of tech praises preceding it. If we are mentioning technical excellence, great usability, and fantastic features everywhere - its only fair to mention the values and ethics of Freedom, the spirit of Revolution and the undying struggle against a tyranical order. Such language has caused change and shaped history in the past through printed books, let your wiki page stir the same passion for those online. 2)The link you quote http://www.linux.org/ mentions ``Linux<http://www.linux.org/#>is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world." which seems to contradict(in the newbie readers perspective) what is written on the Wiki. Moreover the only mention about GNU is with a link on the GPL: http://www.linux.org/info/gnu.html in that page to there are two links ``Foundations Software" and ``free software" both of which point to web ads via some bizweb2000.com site. Why are we putting such pages as links on our Wiki? It gives a very bad impression that we are encouraging adware. 3)The term ``Linux" is trademarked to Linus Torvalds and it should be mentioned. Re the earlier suggestion by someone to print 4 or 6 or 8 pages and paste them, there is a technique of magazine/book assembly where the pages are stuck on the edge (perfect binding). There are two ways of doing this: one being that some service centers have small perfect binding systems (can't really call them machines) for very small run corporate brochures and reports, the other is to do it manually using Fevicol or a cheaper substitute (but they don't come in nice clean tubes). He (she?) has deleted all traces of matter pertaining to decryption of Pacenet's password and inserted standard sales talk in its place. I have not undone this as I want to know whether doing so is "illegal" as the user 'Pacenetrules' claims. Perhaps we need to get a LUG meet arranged with these fanboys and ISP heads. http://www.exaile.org/trac I just happened to come across Exaile. It is a GTK+ based media player very similar in functionality to Amarok. I could not find any RPMs for it though there is a package for Edgy Eft. Installation from the tarball is nothing but 'make install', but one can easily run into dependency hell since there is no configure script to tell you what you need. Make sure you have: a. python-gstreamer b. notification-daemon c. notify-python d. python-sqlite2 e. python-mutagen You might need some more, but these are what I noticed. Hello All, I have been struggling to get my sample text on the wiki but still learning. The page is more than 8 Kb so rejected by the mailing list admin. Hi, Creating a new thread because the original has gone way too awry (I am to be blamed for it too, I guess :/ Sorry, anger got the better of me). Just one (or is it two?) condition. The term ``GNU/Linux'' must not replace the term ``Linux based Distribution''. Any matter from that post must also not appear in any document that uses the term ``GNU/Linux'', unless it is used in the following context (quoting myself from a previous email to the list): > Do something. Create an OS which does NOT have Xorg, KDE, Apache, MySQL, > Postfix, Mozilla, OpenSSH etc etc etc. In essence, only the software > developed directly by the GNU project. FC6 and Display Problem

Hi, I installed FC6 on Intel Core2 Duo Processor with Intel 946 chipset.When I installed at first time it get installed with normal FC6 kernel but when I installed after few days it will get installed with "fc6xen" kernel. What it stands for? Also when I am trying to change graphical mode(X Server) to text mode(80x25) and vice versa by using ctrl-alt-F1 and alt-F7 the display gets stretched or flickering. Some time shifting of graphics to text mode and vice versa is perfect by mostly it is abnormal. Even shifting during shutdown/reboot has the same problem. How can I solve this issue.Please Help. Problem with running a long process on apache

I can run a script as the linux user apache. But when I try to invoke the same through a web-page running on the server (I am using the php system command) it does not execute, and I get a return value of 127. This script takes really long to run, can run for several minutes sometimes. I am clueless about why this is happening... Provide a lot of links too. There may be brochures available on the net but lets do it our way. Take this into account when you buy a new wireless network card and support the companies which provides specifications and documentation to the Free and Open Source Operating Systems developers. how to uninstall kubuntu

i have a dual boot wth kubuntu/win 98 on my system. both are on separate hard disks.in kubuntu it shows all the hard disks(i.e, drives used by windows as well) but in windows it does not show me the kubuntu installed drives. now i want to uninstall kubuntu, how do i do that? had the drives been visible in windows which is definitely a drawback, i wldve formatted the kubuntu harddisk, but since it does not show me the drives, how do i uninstall kubuntu ? ____________________________________________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? uninstalling kubuntu

my dear brothers, the issue was not of not being able to view linux partitions on windows, i just wanted to know how does one uninstall kubuntu. and for the record, to the person who said he does not see me using any of the gnu/linux versions, i am using ubuntu right now instead of kubuntu. i could have very well installed ubuntu over kubuntu, but i thought knowing how to uninstall it would add to little knowledge. anyways, thank u all for the help. i got it done. thanks again ____________________________________________________________________________________ Any questions? Need inputs for FOSS Hospital Management Tools

Hi All! I will meeting a charitable hospital management tomorrow. They want to migrate to FOSS technologies for their hospital. This hospital caters to about 1000 OPD cases on daily bases. They already have some accounting, attendance and payroll software running on MS Windows. They would also like to know if the same can me run on the Linux (GNU/Linux) system. I would like to get inputs from people who are associated with health care industry what are the components and tools required for Hospital Management. Are these tools available in FOSS. [OT] FUD against CAS

Hello Everyone, This mail is not meant to create any controversy or flaming. It is to simply highlight the FUD article that was printed in today's Mumbai Mirror under the title "Shock in the box". A PWD certified electrical engineer has stirred up a FUD against the Conditional Access System and DTH set top boxes by claiming that they consume high amount of power. The vested interests are trying their level best to scare people from migrating to CAS which will empower them with the freedom of choice. This engineer goes about with a tong tester and has measured a current of 500 mA in his set top box while another reader claims to have measured 1 A. This translates to 110 Watts and 220 Watts. The paper has even produced photographs of the engineer using the tong tester. They claim that this will increase electricity bills by 150/- per month. The first stupidity of this engineer is that he is using a tong tester to measure currents in mA. Tong testers are meant to measure high currents in thick power cables that cannot be disturbed, not domestic appliances. For normal current measurements, an ammeter is connected in series with the power cable and the unit is powered on to measure the current flow. I measured my DTH box's current and it was only 35 mA which means a power of 7.7 watts at 220 volts. I have been using DTH since 2 years and never had any increase in power bills. So those who want to switch over to CAS or DTH in Mumbai need not worry about the power consumption. Signal processing does not consume too much power.
